We did not go to the more built up and commercialized; “Nanda Blue Hole,” but to a smaller hidden piece of 🌺 paradise our driver picked out for us.

Inside the hotel, the walls were decorated with some lovely paintings from local artists.

It was a nice break for lunch, but we were anxious to get on with the tour, as our driver and others were having a siesta! 😴

If you are considering taking one of the Royal Caribbean South Pacific Cruises , this post will help provide an overview and review of our 11 Night South Pacific & Fiji Cruise we took on the Explorer of the Seas ship from Sydney, Australia.

On our 1 year trip around the world with the kids , we wanted to explore the South Pacific islands but wanted to find an economical way to see many islands in a short period of time .

So, after investigating more into the Royal Carribean Cruises , this one was the best option for us to see many islands within a reasonable price.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Itinerary – South Pacific

Sydney, australia.

Many Royal Caribbean cruises to the South Pacific islands depart from Sydney, Australia. This is a great opportunity to see the city and explore Sydney for a few days before your cruise.

We spent a week in Syndey prior to as part of our 4 weeks in Australia . We wrapped up Australia by taking this Royal Carribean cruise to go see some of the South Pacific Islands – Vanuatu, New Caledonia & Lifou.

Best Things to do in Sydney with Kids (either before or after your cruise):

Best Areas to Stay in Sydney before Cruise

I would recommend staying at a hotel close to the ship port in Sydney Harbour. We stayed here at the Sydney Harbour Marriott Hotel . It is a great area to stay so you can also check out the Opera House and be within walking distance with luggage to the ship. They were also really accommodating about holding our luggage for the day until our time to check-in time for the cruise.

Sydney was the port that we started and ended our trip with for this specific cruise. So be sure to either schedule sometime before your cruise or after your cruise to enjoy some time in Sydney.

When approaching Vanuatu you will be treated with a breathtaking view of the island that will mesmerize you. The bright turquoise water, with lush tropical trees that line the beaches. Small boats and sailboats scattered along the coastline. We couldn’t wait to go explore this island!

The cruise ship will dock at the port which makes entry and exit really easy and quick. As you disembark at Port Vila you will be funnelled through a market that the locals put on.

We ended up walking a little bit further away from the dock and hiring a driving with another family that was looking to do a few of the same things as us. We arranged a price with the driver and he took us around the island.

We ended up visiting Blue Lagoon where we could swim and try a tree rope jump. A little oasis on the island that we loved just relaxing at. Be sure to bring some water shoes to make it easier for walking around!

We also check out waterfalls on our island adventure for the day. There was also an area for jumping into this one too. A lot of chances to cool off in the heat on the island. There are lots of other things to do in Vanuatu that you can preplan and consider before your arrival.

Along any of the roadside, there are fruit stand and local areas to stop and check out some of the local foods and items for sale. We always like to support the families that need our tourism dollars to help support their local businesses.

Lifou, Loyalty Islands

Lifou, Loyalty Island is part of New Caledonia and there is not a large port that the cruise ship docks at. The kids had a blast because you disembark by boat tenders and arrive at this island with very few people and a great beach to enjoy.

Lifou has a great area with extremely clear water to snorkel at. Just a little walk away from where you are dropped off to reach this amazing view and snorkelling area.

Noumea, New Caledonia

Noumea is the capital city of New Caledonia, so when you arrive it will be at the main import/export dock and feel a bit like you have entered a bigger city (for island life-size).

There are tours and options to take from the cruise ship. We simply took the local bus transportation and checked out the area on our own. We loved seeing the lemon trees line the streets, watch the kite surfers and chill vibe of this city on the island.

You can check out more things to do in Noumea and options from the Royal Caribbean cruise and see if anything suits your needs. Catching a water taxi over to Duck Island would be something we would look into next time.

We found the city of Noumea really easy to get around and could quickly get to any of the places we wanted to go to. We enjoyed some nice walks along the beaches.

On the Royal Carribean South Pacific cruises, there are a few days of straight cruising since the distance is further away than some other types of cruises like a Mediterranean or Caribbean cruise. Especially if your cruise includes Fiji, these cruises generally have a few days of cruising to reach those islands.

There are lots of things to do on the Explorer of the Seas ship to keep you and your family busy, entertained and fill up your days. Our kids actually wanted to stay on the ship on days ported at the islands because they were having so much fun on the Explorer of the Seas ship.

Explorer of the Seas – Things to Do on the Ship while Cruising

• Pools – Relax by the various pools and enjoy the sunshine. There are a few different pool options on the ship – some of which are adult-only and some for kids. The pools all have lots of chairs around the pool to be able to relax and enjoy.
• Kids Club – They have a great kids club that is open all day and into the evening. Our kids loved the kids club and wanted to go every day that we were cruising. This was a great opportunity for us to be able to relax without kids and enjoy the ship.

• Rock Climbing wall and basketball courts
• Mini golf for the entire family to enjoy
• Flow Rider – learn to surf on the ship
• Gym & Spa facilities – they have great facilities that are top shelf and a great way to start your day off.
• Walking track around the ship
• Scheduled and various Morning, Afternoon and Evening activities – ex. craft, show, games, big screen poolside movies, etc
• Casino – which is only open while cruising and not when at the port.
• Library & Shopping
• Various restaurants, cafes, bars, buffets or places to eat and enjoy the delicious food on the ship!

This Royal Caribbean south pacific and Fiji cruise was the ideal itinerary that we hoped for. But, things don’t always go as planned and safety is the number one concern on cruise ships. unfortunately, we had some terrible weather during our time on Explorer of the Seas cruise ship. A cyclone that impacted Fiji and some of the other small islands in the area impacted our ports-of-call and where we could visit on the cruise.

Cruising the south pacific can be unpredictable so understand this can happen and the captain makes those calls. Both islands in Fiji (Lautoka and Suva) were flooded from the cyclone and unable to dock at the port.

An unfortunate situation, but out of all the South Pacific cruises available this itinerary was the best South Pacific cruises because we had the option to go to Fiji. We would choose the same option again if we were to make any recommendations or go another time!

Explorer of the Seas Cruise Tips & Information

• Royal Carribean Cruises to South Pacific change every year and the best way to see the itineraries is to check out the Royal Carribean website and review their itineraries.
• Each day you will be given a Cruise Compass that goes through the day, time in port, types of activities going on and anything else you may need to know. It is basically like a daily newspaper with all the information you need to know about the next day . This Royal Caribbean cruise planner is great to review the night before when they leave it in your stateroom.

• You will have the option to book excursions on the islands with the cruise ship. We did not book any of these excursions, and we did look into booking some on our own, but many of the time we were unsure of the exact time of arrival in the port and we were are the mercy of the timing of the ship. Therefore, if you were to book or schedule an excursion I would book with the cruise. This also helps if you don’t arrive in time you get a refund from the ship.
• Royal Caribbean has drink and alcoholic drink packages , which depending on how much you enjoy alcoholic beverages this may be a cheaper way to enjoy yourself on the cruise. Otherwise, you can purchase alcoholic drinks throughout the ship.

• Royal Caribbean uses US dollars for their currency on the ship . So even though you are leaving Australia, the currency on the ship is US dollars. They have ABM on the ship to get cash or you can use your credit card for purchases and charge to your stateroom.
• We found out that the common thing for cruises that leave Australia is that they don’t automatically give the gratuity that you can pay upfront when you book the cruise. Australian tip for those who provide service to them, so you can make your choice but this is what is going on with gratuity on South Pacific cruises. If you are used to cruising from any other port gratuity is usually paid at the begging.

• Book your restaurants right away if you know what time you want to go at. With the kids, we always went with the 5:30 pm dinner, except when we were at the port we would schedule them later.
• For the Kids Club, they only allow so many kids in and on busy weeks this can be a challenge, we went up about 30 minutes before the kids club opened so the kids could be guaranteed in for the day (their choice, not ours).

• Royal Caribbean ships are large and can take a bit to figure your way around, but they are like a huge glamorous floating hotel.
• Dress Code – Bring a few nicer sets of clothing for dinners and evening entertainment. As we were travelling with a small suitcase on our world trip we didn’t have the extravagant outfits but it would have been nice to enjoy getting dressed up more. Simple dress shirts, pants, dresses or business casual was expected at the dining halls. Kids wore shorts and summer dresses. Anything goes at the buffets, but no beachwear.

• Wifi can be really unreliable at the best of time and cell phone coverage can be spotty as well. Be sure to have planned for this limited wifi in advance with your family and work.
• We always have a guidebook along with us, and sometimes the wifi being unpredictable on cruises it also helps with some poolside reading on the ship. Here are some of our suggestions for the South Pacific islands.
• Remember you are at sea and sometimes weather and safety take precedence over going to a destination. Although they have plans to see a certain island if weather conditions do not cooperate alternative plans need to happen.
• You will be able to book future Royal Carribean cruises on board for a discounted price.
• Don’t forget to have travel insurance for your cruise, we used and recommend World Nomads for travel insurance. We used this insurance for our entire 1 year trip around the world, including for this cruise. Check out our World Nomad travel insurance review here .
• We always took our passports, cash and credit cards with us when we got off the ship. We figured it was better to have them for identification and if for any reason we missed the ship we would be able to sort something out to get to the next port.
• There are toiletries and miscellaneous items for sale on the ship, which is great if you have forgotten anything but expect higher prices for the convenience. So don’t forget to pack the right things for your cruise . Here are some of the things we had in our day packs every time we ported on an island:

What did we like about Cruising?

• After travelling fulltime and constantly moving from one hotel to the next, it was a treat to be able to see new places but keep all your luggage in one spot in the cabin.
• It was more cost and time-efficient to take the cruise for our family of 4 to see all these places, versus paying for flights, ferries, accommodations and food.
• It was really easy, relaxed, no stress vacation.
• The FOOD was amazing ! Some of the best food we have ever had.
• We met some great people that we still keep in touch with.
• The kids loved the murphy beds that folded down in the cabin.
• We celebrated Easter on the ship, and they had great festivities like easter egg decorating, egg hunt and other fun activities for the kids on this day. The food was also extra extravagant on Easter Day, I can’t even imagine what Christmas on the Explorer of the Seas would be like!
• The Royal Caribbean Pacific cruises took us to islands that most likely we wouldn’t have been able to see within the timeframe that we had and for the cost. Although it was a treat for us with a 1 year travel budget, the overall cost was very reasonable for what we got.

What we didn’t like about Cruising?

• There wasn’t a lot of cultures to be experienced . We tried to get our fix when on the islands, but it was very much a tourist trap as soon as you got off the ship. There was no ability to really get any ethnic type of experience on the island. There are still some amazing places to see but just set your expectations before going on a cruise.
• It would have been more fun if there were friends and other families along with us. There is a lot of downtime while cruising, and it would have been a great time to hang out with other friends during these times. Cruising would be great for a multi-generational family trip , a reunion or group of families going on vacation together.
• Since we had the misfortune of a cyclone, we cruised for more days than we expected and so we went a little stir crazy after day 3 of cruising. Even with all the things to do, we needed our feet on land and weren’t used to cruising for so long. The pools were also closed and it was extremely windy and rough as well. But, this is just nature and nothing that could have been done to avoid this. But, at least the kids were happy in the kids club, so this helped pass the time for them!

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.

Nearly 200 people sick in norovirus outbreaks on Princess, Royal Caribbean ships

Nearly 200 people got sick in norovirus outbreaks on Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean International ships.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 94 of the 2,532 guests on Sapphire Princess reported being ill during its April 5 cruise, along with 20 crew members. The round-trip cruise, which left from Los Angeles with stops in Hawaii and the South Pacific, will end on May 7, according to CruiseMapper .

On Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas, 67 of its 1,993 guests reported being ill in addition to two crew members during a cruise that ended April 22, according to the CDC . The two-week voyage sailed from Tampa, Florida to Los Angeles with stops in countries like Colombia and Panama, according to CruiseMapper .

In both outbreaks, the guests and crew members’ main symptoms were diarrhea and vomiting.

Princess, Royal Caribbean and the ships’ crews implemented heightened cleaning and disinfection measures and isolated those who were sick, among other steps, the health agency said.

"At the first sign of an increase in the numbers of passengers reporting to the medical center with gastrointestinal illness, we immediately initiated additional enhanced sanitation procedures to interrupt the person-to-person spread of this virus," a Princess spokesperson told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. "Our sanitation program, developed in coordination with the CDC, includes disinfection measures, isolation of ill passengers and communication to passengers about steps they can take to stay well while onboard."

Royal Caribbean did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The CDC has logged six outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruise ships that met its threshold for public notification since the beginning of the year. Norovirus was listed as the causative agent in five, while one was unknown.

The illness is often associated with cruise ships but outbreaks occur in communities on land as well, according to Dr. Sarah E. Hochman, a hospital epidemiologist and the section chief of infectious diseases at NYU Langone Health’s Tisch Hospital.

“There's not something special or unique about cruise ships,” she said. “It's really any type of congregate setting, but it's also happening out in the community on a much smaller scale among households and household contacts. It just doesn't come to the attention of public health as much as it does for larger congregate settings.”

Hochman said the virus is “incredibly infectious” and congregate settings tend to have many shared surfaces, such as handrails in cruise ship stairwells or elevators. “And so, if you just have one person who's shedding the virus and touches the surface and then someone else touches it and then touches their mouth, that's how it can spread in those types of settings.”

Alcohol-based hand sanitizer isn't as effective against norovirus, and Hochman emphasized that washing hands with soap and water “will do a lot to prevent the spread.”

The news comes after more than two dozen Silversea Cruises guests got sick in a gastrointestinal illness outbreak on the luxury line’s Silver Nova ship during a sailing that began in late March.
