Troubleshooting, safari 7.0.6 & safari 6.1.6 with security updates released for mac.
Apple has released a small update to Safari for Mac OS X, versioned as Safari 6.1.6 and Safari 7.0.6. Both updates contain important security fixes and improved memory handling, and Apple recommends that all Mac users install the updates.
The simplest way to download the latest version of Safari is through the Mac App Store. Go to the Apple menu and choose “Software Update”, where the update should be available, if it’s not shown you may need to refresh the App Store. The download is fairly small, weighing in around 56MB for OS X Mavericks users. Which version is visible to you will depend on your version of OS X, and the version of Safari that is currently installed on the Mac.
Release notes accompanying the Safari 7.0.6 security update are the following, courtesy of Apple Support :
“ About the security content of Safari 6.1.6 and Safari 7.0.6

▪ WebKit Available for: OS X Lion v10.7.5, OS X Lion Server v10.7.5, OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.5, OS X Mavericks v10.9.4
Impact: Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
Description: Multiple memory corruption issues existed in WebKit. These issues were addressed through improved memory handling.”
Even if you don’t use Safari as the primary web browser on a Mac, it’s a good idea to install the security updates made available through OS X. Other than being good security policy, some third party apps may use the Safari WebKt engine to display content or data through certain application features.

I’m not sure if I know what to update to do first. I have an old MacBook. It runs Safari 6.1.6. I want to update if possible. What’s first.
I’m not able to exit my safari it won’t let me shut down my laptop or even restart it.
No home page change for me.
The update to Safari changed my homepage to http://www.apple.com without asking. (Of course I changed it back again, but I don’t recall previous Safari updates doing that.)
I did not experience the same thing, nothing changed (that I have noticed) after the update.
Maybe due to some other cause, then.

Apple releases Safari 6.1.6 and Safari 7.0.6 with security improvements
According to the security release notes accompanying Apple's latest Safari versions, the new software address a WebKit vulnerability that could allow for termination of arbitrary code after a user visits a malicious website.
Apple said it patched issues with memory corruption in WebKit by employing "improved memory handling," but offered no further detail on the matter. Looking at the list of Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures IDs (CVE-IDs), Apple discovered five issues fixed with today's release, while credit for the other two was given to Google's Chrome Security Team and an anonymous researcher.
A Safari update in May addressed a nearly identical WebKit problem that could cause Macs to unexpectedly crash.
Safari 6.1.6 and Safari 7.0.6 are free downloads that can be accessed via Software Update. The new software is available for OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks, OS X 10.7.5 Mountain Lion and OS X 10.8.5 Lion.

Apple updates Safari 15.6.1 with security fixes for macOS Big Sur and Catalina users
Apple this week released iOS 15.6.1 and macOS Monterey 12.5.1 , both with security enhancements. And to bring these security enhancements to even more users, the company today released Safari 15.6.1 for Macs running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.
The update doesn’t come with any new features or major changes. Instead, it fixes an exploit in WebKit (Safari’s web engine) that could lead to arbitrary code execution. This fix was already available for users who updated their Macs to macOS Monterey 12.5.1.
However, users with older Macs that are unable to run the latest version of macOS now have access to the same security fixes in Safari.
Here’s what Apple says about the update on its website :
Available for: macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina Impact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.
Apple has attributed the WebKit exploit fix to an anonymous researcher.
Safari 16 coming soon to older macOS versions
With macOS Ventura, which is now available for developers and beta users, Apple has announced Safari 16 with multiple new features. The new version of Safari addresses one of the main complaints web developers have about Apple’s web browser, which is the lack of web push notifications . This means that websites and web apps can now send notifications to users even when Safari is closed.
Other new features in Safari 16 include Shared Tab Group, strong password editing, improved CSS, and Passkeys – a new way to authenticate to websites with Touch ID without having to create a traditional password.
Safari 16 will also be available to users of macOS Monterey and macOS Big Sur later this year, once Apple releases macOS Ventura to the public. Developers and invited users can now try out the beta version of Safari 16 for older macOS versions.
As for the Safari 15.6.1 update, it is now available via the Software Update menu within the System Preferences app.

I did some research. I apologize for the link issue. There is a Safari 6.0.1 for Lion. It could be installed with 10.7.5, but if you don't have it then try using Software Update. If it isn't available that way, then it was an experimental version. In other words there is no 6.0.x public release for Lion; only for Mountain Lion.

Safari wasn't working in my macbook (crashes every time) and I cannot update using Software Updates. You can update to Safari 6:
1. Open command window
2. Copy and paste:
curl -s $(strings /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SoftwareUpdate.framework/SoftwareUpdate | grep http | grep sucatalog) | grep Safari | grep pkg | sed -e s/"<string>"//g -e s/"<\/string>"//g -e s/\ //g
3. Must show valid download URLs. Copy Lion link and paste in your browser.
4. Wait download finish.
5. Execute pkg.
This solution works for me! Lion 10.7.5

I did a clean install of OSX Lion, after years of things accumulating in my mac, and was surprised by Safari not working.
I ran into the trouble described at the beginning of this thread regarding Safari not working after an upgrade to OSX Lion. I thought should be an easy fix, right.
I tried several of the methods here including the deleting of the PrivateFrameworks, et. al.
Even after the lengthy software updates, still didn't work. And those of you that tried to find a usable link to simply download Safari 6.0 probably were led to dead links or to the Apple site, that sent you to the Apps Store, and no direct link.
I almost gave up until I found this usable link, via WebCrawler search engine, and voila', free and easy working download. Simple as it should be. Yes, it worked. Hope it is a simple solution for you as well.
Just scroll down to EXTERNAL MIRROR 4 6.1.6 Lion
