Enduring, eclectic, endlessly appealing – Europe is easy to explore and impossible to forget.

Trying to decide between hiking through rugged wilderness, touring 13th-century churches, and sipping wine in the sun? In Europe you can do it all and do it well. While it might be compact in size, this continent is packed full of remarkably diverse cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and delicious cuisines – and they’re all only a short flight or train ride away from each other. The walkable ruins of Italy will transport you back to a time when the Romans ruled an empire. Sweden’s indulgent national dishes will have your tastebuds begging for more. The natural beauty found in Scotland is guaranteed to ignite the mythical side of your imagination. And that’s only the beginning. From the breezy Mediterranean to the chilly Baltics, our European tours have something for every traveller.

Browse by holiday destination, europe travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to European countries largely depends on the nationality on your passport and whether the country you're travelling to is part of the Schengen Agreement.

This agreement sees 26 European countries offer visa-free travel to nationals from 60 other countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

To determine whether the country you're travelling to requires a visa, head to the   Schengen Visa's information website.

What is the internet access like in Europe?

You can easily access the internet in most countries in Europe, generally in capital cities and other major towns. Internet access may be limited in regional locations such as national parks or remote villages in some countries.

Can I use my mobile phone in Europe?

You shouldn't have a problem using your mobile phone while travelling throughout Europe, however, your international data roaming will need to be activated in order to connect to the internet or send messages (unless you connect to the local wi-fi).

What are the toilets like in Europe?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in the majority of European countries.

Can I drink the water in Europe?

Tap water in most European countries is considered safe to drink unless it is otherwise marked.

When should I book a tour in Europe?

There is no 'best time' to travel around Europe as most countries offer plenty to do in every season of the year.

T he most popular time to travel to countries like Greece, Italy, and Croatia is during the summer months (June, July, and August) so you can make the most of each country's respective beaches and warm weather.

C ountries such as Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are known for their snowy landscapes and northern lights sightings during Winter (December, January, and February).

How much does a Europe tour cost?

A tour in Europe can vary depending on the countries you want to visit, the style of tour, and how long you want to go for but you can expect to pay anywhere between USD$1,000 to USD$5,000, with most tours around USD$2,500.

Is tipping common in Europe?

Tipping isn't as prevalent in Europe as it is in some other countries and definitely isn't expected, but if you like the quality of service you've been given at hotels, restaurants etc then a tip is always appreciated.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Europe?

While credit cards are accepted in all European countries (especially in capital cities and other larger cities), smaller cafes or local run businesses may not have EFTPOS machines so it's always best to carry around a little cash to cover these expenses.

What is ATM access like in Europe?

You should have no problem finding ATMs in most European cities.

What currency will I need on a Europe tour?

The official currency of Europe is the Euro (€), however, only 19 of the 28 countries in the European Union use this. Countries that still use their own currency include Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Croatia, Denmark, and Sweden.

Is Europe safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Europe is considered a reasonably safe continent for LGBTQIA+ travellers with plenty of countries openly accepting, welcoming, and embracing the community.

This is evident in large capital cities such as Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Vienna.

Some countries still hold traditional religious beliefs such as Belarus and Poland so a degree of caution should be taken when travelling around cities and remote regions in those countries.

Will I need a socket adapter for Europe?

If you plan on travelling to multiple countries throughout Europe then purchasing an all-in-one, worldwide adapter is the safest way to go.

I f you don't want to do that, your safest bet is to buy an adapter that uses C or E/F-type plugs as most European countries recognise this.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Majestic Europe

To be very honest, We had a wonderful tour. We have enjoyed a lot, all the tour guides were very humble and very supportive. They gave a lot of information to us at every part of the enlisted cities and during the journey. The hotels were very nice, comfortable to stay. The breakfast was good at few places but we expected it at every hotel because, for us as pure vegetarian, we could not get enough other than fruits and cakes. The breakfast at Hotel pyramida was excellent. Everything went very nice throughout the tour, special thanks to Tour guide Eva, Isabell and Emanuel who took good care of us. It was a complete and worthy tour. Only thing to advise is to add up food options for Indian vegetarian people, this would add more value to us. Thank you very much for such a great tour.

Best of Central Europe Tour

Best of Central Europe

It was my very first Intrepid trip and I enjoyed every moment of it. It was more than I expected! I loved the chemistry of the group (I miss them dearly), the accommodation location as well as the included activities. Being in a small group also has a lot of advantages like getting to know each of them personally and build friendships even after the trip. I was just so glad I took the trip through Intrepid!

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals Tour

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals

This trip was overall in one word... amazing. The destinations covered were amazing & beautiful. It was handy to have everything sorted out : the accommodation (mix of hostels & hotels), the transportation and many of the activities. Most of the places stayed did not have breakfast, but it was stated clearly that they wouldn't. Some of the places that had breakfast included a selection of breads, cereals and coffee - everything that you need. Croatia blew my mind.. The Croatia part of the tour was very in depth and I have a great idea of what the country is all about now & I also want to go back to see more in the future - The tour goes to cities, lakes, medieval villages, islands, beaches and has stops along the way to each usually. Note that on occasion there are stops along the way & the activity isn't always included in the tour.. I found that out the hard way in Albania. The transportation was a mix of using local transportation, personal buses and ferries. Note that in Albania MOST places do not accept credit card & we had troubles using the bank machines to take out cash.. Albania accepts the Euro as currency so make sure you have lots before you go (I also found out the hard way and didn't have any Euros as i Spent them in Montenegro) The groups for the tour are really what made the trip amazing.. Both groups were super friendly & alot of fun.. being a smaller tour and with the age restrictions it did make for a better trip because we were all around the same age, so had more in common! It was great having a smaller group too because we all became closer & spent even the "free time/Free days" together doing the activities. Our guide Marco was with us for both parts of the tour and overall he did a great job covering the information needed and I felt like we could always go to him if we had questions about anything. That was a part of the tour that I liked: knowing that I had someone to ask questions to who knows the area..Overall, HIGHLY recommend doing BOTH parts of this tour, as Many who didn't do the 2nd leg of the trip were super jealous and wishing they did! You won't regret doing this tour!!

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days Tour

Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days

It was excellent! Our guide Daniel was the best. Daniel made the whole trip fun, stress free and he was very knowledgeable. The accomodation was lovely and very central. The countries we visited were beautiful but having a guide made it 100% better. We ate incredible local foods and had a great experience with a guide local to the Balkans. Couldn’t recommend the tour enough!

What people love about Europe Tours

Overall, a well organized trip. Eva is an awesome tour guide. Perhaps more cautions and security should be emphasized especially in Italy as some of our luggage and laptop were stolen when checking in at the hotel.
Great experience. Very fun.
The tour was awesome. Too bad it was short. Our Tour leader Noddy perform extremely well job organizing and controlling our big group so we was on time everywhere. Our driver Dennis professionalism is off the charts. Especially when we was driving through narrow streets of Italy. I would recommend this tour to others

Once the tour concludes, we'll head back to the hotel.

For those interested, this evening optional tours to either the Moulin Rouge or the famous L´Oiseau Paradis Latin show with dinner are available to purchase on tour. See below for more details.

Optional Tours:

MOULIN ROUGE SHOW  (€145pp) And how could you miss the Parisian night by attending the oldest and most famous cabaret in the world? We talk about the "Moulin Rouge", with more than one hundred years of history. It evokes the moments of the Belle Epoque, in the Parisian district of Pigalle where the concept of the French "varieté" began through great choreographers like the famous French painter Toulouse-Lautrec. More than 100 artists on stage, including 60 dancers from around the world, gigantic aquarium, international attractions and the famous French Cancan. All with one of the fastest scene changes in the world. A show that will not be forgotten. Entry of children under 6 years is not allowed.

DURATION: 2hrs

INCLUDED: Round-trip transport service from and to the hotel. Table reservation. Tips included. Show with 1/2 bottle of French champaign per person.

SHOW PARADIS LATIN WITH DINNER  (€165pp) With the show L´Oiseau Paradis, the Paradis Latin immerses the spectators in a magical world. Performed in a historic room from the Napoleon era and restored by the engineer Gustave Eiffel, the show begins at the entrance hall of the cabaret, where the artists immerse the guests in a surreal and striking atmosphere. This is followed by an hour and a half show during which creatures, dancers, actors, singers, comedians and acrobats in a succession of exceptional scenes enhanced by special effects. A cast signed by Alain Lagrande, renowned creator of sets for operas, musicals and plays. More than 500 costumes created by the Parisian haute couture house "On Aura tout vu". What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

"Normally, I don't feel like writing reviews, but I felt compelled to do it for Athens Insiders. I made the decision to travel to Athens in the summer of 2012 in order to avoid the commotion that was predicted to result from the Queen's jubilee. As usual, my work kept me busy right up to the last minute, so I ran out of time to do anything fun for my week-long trip. I learned about this young group of tour guides for Athens and its vicinity from a friend. I had a wonderful experience. I got in touch with Daphne, who gave me email recommendations for Athens attractions to see, inquired about my preferences for local cuisine, and then devised an itinerary for my trip. In addition to visiting the typical suspects in Athens (Acropolis, etc.), I also chose to travel to Delhi and spend a night at a campground there. And I had a great time, honestly. We visited the attractions when there were few visitors and spent the busiest times outside of Athens rather than being herded around like cattle. I was taken to incredible tiny eateries (the well-known tavernas), marketplaces, and other regional shops."

"Fabulous tour I would highly recommend. Our tour director Lorena Schiavon was great. Very informative & knowledgeable about all the towns & sights. Loved all the surprises she had mostly at the beginning of trip. Tasted different Italian cookies. Stopped to view gorgeous San Giminamo with wine & cheese. We wish Collesium tour in Rome included inside tour, and Fountain tour was included. We had a smaller group which I loved but optional fountain tour didn’t make. Wish in Venice tour included Dogge’s palace. So many beautiful cities & views. Enough free time. Loved going to family homes. Roman dinner at Machiavelli’s was outstanding! Loved the music. * Our last dinner was full of surprises with a band playing outside a church. I believe a holiday. Super fun. All the local tour guides were great with exception of one. Fabulous time. We will tour again with this company. Loved our driver Mauricio! Always felt safe & comfortable. Lots of walking…"

"I have the distinct pleasure of working with Steven at Iberian Escapes as our property manager and host. We moved away from a larger property manager because they couldn't get organized and they never provided accurate accounting - we were frustrated and quickly losing trust. Thankfully, we found Iberian Escapes. Steven met us at our apartment - on time - and he's done everything he said he would. We live in a different country and we needed someone trustworthy and competent. We very much appreciate the honesty, integrity, accurate accounting, and timely communication to us AND our guests no matter the situation. We even heard from some recent guests "you've got a great property manager! He's very responsive and easy to work with" Another guest liked the apartment so much he wanted to stay an extra day. Easy for us, easy for the guest, and all seamlessly coordinated by Iberian Escapes! Highly recommend for property owners looking for a great manager. Also highly recommend finding one of his listings if you're planning on staying in one of the areas he covers! You won't be disappointed."

Europe Tour Selection Trips

  • River cruises  are an appealing way to tour Europe in a relaxed mode that offers sightseeing in both atmospheric villages and big cities.
  • Europe is about more than high culture; active Europe tours include cycling in Greece, hiking in the French or Swiss Alps, even walking across England.
  • Point-to-point walking or cycling tours through the countryside are a great way to meet locals along trails, in pubs, or in small town settings.
  • For the truly adventurous, consider tours that include running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain; “mud walking” in Holland; or glacier walking in  Switzerland .
  • The “If It’s Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium” rush-rush-through-seven countries-in-a- week bus tours are mostly passé; consider focusing on one or just a few countries at a time.
  • Spain-Portugal; Denmark-Sweden-Norway; Czech Republic-Austria-Hungary; and Belgium-Netherlands are among those countries that make for nice regional tours.
  • While you can see something of Europe in a week, allowing at least ten days to two weeks for one to three countries is more satisfying.
  • Don’t be too concerned with language barriers when booking your tour, since many Europeans now speak English, and your guides can translate when necessary.
  • Many Europeans go on vacation for the entire month of August, so visiting in September or October can be ideal; the weather is cooler, too.

Additional details

Traveling to  Europe  - ETIAS

Europe is implimenting a new travel authorization system that American travelers will need to enter into Europe’s EU and Schengen Zone.  ETIAS, which stands for EU Travel Information and Authorisation System,  will charge a fee and check security credentials for travelers visiting for business, tourism, medical or transit purposes.

ETIAS won’t be required until 2022 but there will be a six month grace period  which means travelers won’t be required to have approval until 2023.

Read more about traveling to Europe and what the ETIAS means for American travelers.

New Update -  Europe  Ban

As of July 1, 2020 the European Union has opened their borders to tourists from 15 different countries.

The reopening plan was based on health criteria, and ultimately officials decided to leave the U.S. off the list. The list of countries allowed to enter Europe will be reviewed every two weeks to keep up with the changing reality of coronavirus outbreaks.

Here is the full list of countries that the European Union has opened up to:

  • New Zealand
  • South Korea

Where does the language barrier matter?

One of the most fascinating qualities of Europe is the way that countries so close together, with so much interaction, have maintained strong individuality. This manifests in culture, customs, and of course - language. There are 24 official languages in the EU, but countries both in the Union and outside it often have their own official languages.

Because of this, if you are planning a trip around Europe - you will likely run into a situation where you cannot speak the local language. Don’t worry! Most Europeans can speak more than two languages, and in Western Europe, as well as capital cities, this means many Europeans speak English.

Eastern Europe & Russia

One common concern when traveling to Europe is that there is very little English spoken in Eastern Europe -- this is, however, rapidly changing. As the popularity of destinations like Budapest , Prague , Riga , and Krakow continues to boom, many more young people there are becoming fluent in English.

There are, however, several places where English speakers are a little harder to come by. Four countries where English speakers are uncommon include:

Russia (with the exception of St. Petersburg)

Rural Spain

As can be expected, there are also countries with specific regional dialects. This is unlikely to be a problem -- but it is something good to be prepared for! For example, even if you are fluent in French, you might not be able to understand Alsatian (spoken in the Alsace region of region, including the city Strasbourg ) or Catalan (spoken in the southwestern corner of  France).

Best Winter Family European Vacations

A winter vacation to Europe is a timeless and magical experience, especially when the trip is shared with loved ones. Here are three of the best locations to keep in mind for when you’re planning your next trip for you and your family.

1.   Zermatt, Switzerland Take an alpine tour of Europe to this picturesque town is nestled between the sharp and dramatic mountains. Not only this, but it is at the base of one the Alps’ most famous peaks: the Matterhorn.

Enthusiastic climbers, skiers, and snowboarders will thrill in some of the best skiing Europe has to offer. Afterwards, head back to your chalet and tuck into a steaming mug of Swiss hot chocolate before heading out for a traditional fondue dinner.

2.   St. Petersburg, Russia One of the most popular cities to visit throughout the year, visitors come to St. Petersburg in the winter to beat the crowds and experience a genuine Russian snow. You will be stunned by the sight of the frozen Neva river, and snow piling on the arches of the St. Nicholas cathedral.

When things get too chilly outdoors, take a well earned break by visiting the infamous Russian ballet and opera, or take an educational tour of the Hermitage museum inside of the Winter Palace.

3.   Canary Islands, Spain For families looking to escape the cold, Europe is still a great destination. Consider the Canary Islands, which are located off the coast of West Africa, and are favored with sunbathing weather all year round.

With opportunities to go hiking, jetski, waterski, surf, even sandboard off Gran Canaria’s massive, Sahara-like sand dunes, there are countless ways to have active fun. At night, indulge in the island’s unique cuisine.

Flying to Europe

What with the introduction of so many new budget airlines, many travelers are curious about new flight options to, and around, the continent. With fuel costs low, and the value of the dollar on the rise, trips to Europe are cheaper for Americans than ever before. This interest is increased by the fact that many vacation packages do not include flights, and it is still necessary to book your own.

Airlines like Ryanair travel within the continent very cheaply, but be prepared to forgo checking in, and airplane tray tables, much less built in TV’s. These budget airlines also have stringent and unique restrictions. For example, Ryanair requires that you check in before arriving at the airport, or you will lose your ticket. Another downside to "flying budget" is that customer service can be very difficult to obtain with these no-frills airlines, and cancellations without any recourse are also relatively common.

If you aren't willing to risk a budget airline, there are still ways to find cheap flights. One good tip is to look airlines fly out of cities that serve as a hub (an example in the U.S. would be the Atlanta airport). Whether you are flying for a Europe tour from the USA, or India, flights from these airports are usually lower in price.

Frequently Asked Questions About Australia Guided Tours

  • What are the advantages of taking a guided tour in Australia? Guided tours offer convenience, local expertise, safety, and well-organized itineraries. Travelers can enjoy a more in-depth experience with knowledgeable Travel Directors and local specialists, and logistical details like transportation and accommodations taken care of.
  • What is the best time of year to tour Australia? The best time to visit depends on the regions and activities you want to explore. Generally, Australia's spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are pleasant for touring, but climate and weather can vary significantly across the country.
  • What are some of the top sites to see on a trip of Australia? The following highlights encapsulate Australia's diverse beauty, from natural wonders to cultural gems, ensuring an unforgettable journey, including iconic landmarks Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge; Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef; Uluru (Ayers Rock), the sacred red monolith; Great Ocean Road, a stunning coastal drive with Twelve Apostles; the wildlife paradise of Kangaroo Island; Melbourne, a metropolitan cultural hub; Blue Mountains with eucalyptus-clad valleys and rock formations for hiking; Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island with pristine beaches.
  • How long should I spend on an Australia travel tour? The ideal duration for an Australia travel tour depends on your preferences and the depth of exploration you desire. However, for a well-rounded experience that covers key highlights, a trip of about 2 to 3 weeks is recommended. You can dedicate 3-4 days exploring Sydney’s iconic landmarks and nearby attractions. Venturing to the Great Barrier Reef warrants 3-5 days for a comprehensive reef experience. The Red Centre, including Uluru, merits around 3-4 days for its unique desert landscapes and Indigenous culture. The Great Ocean Road requires 2-3 days for the scenic drive and exploration. Additionally, allocate 2-3 days for each additional city or region you wish to visit, such as Melbourne, Tasmania, or the Outback. Keep in mind that Australia's vast size means travel distances can be considerable, so it's crucial to balance your itinerary to match your interests and preferred pace.
  • What is typically included in the cost of a guided tour of Australia? Tour inclusions can vary, but they cover accommodations, transportation, guided activities, some meals, and entrance fees to specific attractions listed in the itinerary. Be sure to review what is included in your chosen tour package. How many months in advance should I plan a trip to Australia? We recommend you plan your Australia trip between 3 -10 months before you want to travel. Airlines don’t publish fares much further out than 10-11 months. You should look to book your vacation once you can lock in your flights. Luckily, we take care of all of that for you. If travelers want to go for a special anniversary or event, they’ll book years in advance so they know they are all set and can let us handle it from there.
  • Do I need a visa to join a guided tour in Australia? Yes, most international travelers need a tourist visa to enter Australia, whether they're on a guided tour or traveling independently. It’s also essential to ensure your passport is valid for at least six months after you plan to return to the States. Planning earlier allows you plenty of time to renew your passport or apply for a visa if required. Travel rules are changing daily. If unsure, ask your Travel Specialist or learn more from our simple travel restrictions and regulations tool .
  • Is travel insurance necessary for guided tours in Australia? Travel insurance is strongly recommended for guided tours. It can provide coverage for unexpected events like trip cancellations, medical emergencies, lost luggage, and more, offering peace of mind during your journey.
  • What should I pack for a guided tour of Australia? Packing essentials vary depending on the tour type and season, but essentials often include comfortable clothing, sturdy footwear, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), and your travel documents (passport, visa). Packing for a guided tour of Australia will depend on the specific itinerary, season, and region you'll be visiting. Australia is a vast and diverse country with a wide range of climates, so your packing list may vary. Here are some general guidelines to consider: Clothing : Lightweight, breathable clothing for hot and humid regions, like the tropical north. Layered clothing for cooler regions, such as Melbourne or Sydney. Comfortable walking shoes for exploring cities and natural attractions. Swimwear, especially if you plan to visit the beach or the Great Barrier Reef. Rain gear, such as a lightweight waterproof jacket, as rain can occur in many parts of Australia. Sun Protection: Wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the strong Australian sun. High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm with sunblock. Insect repellent for areas with bugs. Electronics and Travel Essentials: Power adapter/converter to fit Australian outlets (Type I, 230V). Portable power bank for your devices. A good camera to capture the stunning landscapes. Travel documents, including your passport, visa, travel insurance, and tour itinerary. A photocopy or digital backup of important documents. Medications and Toiletries: Any prescription medications you need. Over-the-counter medications for common travel issues (e.g., pain relievers, antacids). Toiletries, including a small first-aid kit. Personal hygiene items. Backpack and Daypack: A comfortable daypack for day trips and hiking. A larger backpack or suitcase for your main luggage. Money and Cards: Australian currency (AUD) or a travel card. Credit/debit cards and some cash for smaller expenses.

Why You Should Visit Australia

Visit Australia for its stunning natural beauty, from the Great Barrier Reef to the Outback's red deserts. Mass tourism influences huge change to way Aussies do European summer

The way Australians travel Europe for the northern summer is changing with tourists starting to “wise up” to a big problem.

The way Australians travel to Europe for the northern summer is changing in a big way.

More and more Aussies are choosing to travel in the “shoulder seasons” with both overtourism and climate change influencing the trend, industry experts say.

Over the last six months, there have been 58 per cent more flights to Europe booked through Webjet for May and June – what is considered the shoulder season – compared to the peak season in July and August, exclusive data obtained by news.com.au from the online travel giant shows.

London, Athens, Paris, Rome and Amsterdam are the top European destinations booked for May and June. The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris kick off July 26.

Brett Mitchell, the Australian managing director for Melbourne-based travel company Intrepid Travel, said they were seeing more Aussies “wising up to mass tourism” and choosing to travel out of peak season to avoid crowds and get a better experience.

“When tourism is not done well it does lead to overtourism, and overtourism can have insidious effects on local communities,” he told news.com.au.

“I think the biggest one is inflation. It really pushes up the price of rent, housing [and] basics like food. What that does is push people out of their local communities. People who have lived there for generations find themselves having to move and when you do that you lose your local heritage, your culture is destroyed a lot, big business moves in, and all of a sudden the beautiful part about travel, learning new cultures and the authenticity of meeting locals, all of that goes away.

“[There is also] pressure on local infrastructure and the environment. It becomes a pretty sh** experience for the traveller as well. It’s just not sustainable at the end of the day.”

He said travellers were also consciously getting up earlier to see iconic tourist attractions without huge crowds.

Cities and smaller towns across the world are taking action against overtourism. Most recently, Venice introduced a new entry fee for day trippers and Amsterdam announced a ban on new hotels , which follows a public campaign last year dubbed “Stay Away” to deter “nuisance” tourists.

Last week, tens of thousands of people across Spain’s Canary Islands protested against the state of tourism there.

Mr Mitchell said on top of mass tourism, climate change was also influencing the way people are now travelling.

“Southern Europe is a real issue with the heat and it’s only going to get worse,” he said.

Speaking with news.com.au last season about the record-breaking heat , Intrepid Travel CEO James Thornton predicted within the next five to 10 years Aussies will be choosing to jet off to Europe for Easter and September school holidays instead of the wildly popular July and August months.

He said the extreme heat last year was uncomfortable but also disruptive with itineraries needing to be altered, and was likely an indication of what’s to come.

“I think one thing is for certain; both climate risk and tourist numbers are both rapidly rising,” he said.

Last year Italy had the most Australian visitors since records began with 311,760 Aussies visiting the country – 19 per cent more than pre-pandemic in 2019, the Italian National Tourist Board reported.

The influx of Aussie tourists took off in July but the INTB said Australian Bureau of Statistics figures supports there is a trend emerging in shoulder season travel.

Visitor numbers in September 2023 were 18 per cent higher than September 2019, while October numbers rose to 21 per cent on the same time period.

Emanuele Attanasio, the country manager for the INTB in Australia, said the true numbers “are likely much higher given that ABS data only considers travellers who spent most of their time in Italy when travelling overseas”.

“Australians definitely do their research before heading to Italy and many choose to travel at the end of summer in September and October or just before summer in May when the weather is still warm but kids are still at school and locals are still working,” Mr Attanasio told news.com.au.

“Most working Australians have four weeks annual leave that can be taken at any given time. This is not usually the case for Europeans who usually have to take time off during June, July and August. The flexibility that Australians have allows them to choose other months of the year and avoid peak tourism.”

Mass tourism is not only influencing when we travel, but where we travel

In Italy, Mr Attanasio said Aussies were expanding their travels outside traditional hot spots and heading to regions like Umbria, Puglia, Sardinia, Sicily and Emilia Romagna.

“I think Australians that have previously visited Italy have realised that there is so much more to experience other than the popular destinations such as Venice, Rome and Florence,” he said.

He added that “undiscovered gems” were also becoming more popular due to the film industry.

“Australians are discovering destinations such as Matera – which is the second oldest city in the world – thanks to the latest James Bond movie or other destinations on the Amalfi Coast such as Atrani thanks to the Netflix series Ripley,” he said.

Mr Mitchell said Intrepid was seeing its customers wanting to share their experiences more across a destination by heading to lesser known spots and this was encouraged to help combat the negative effects of mass tourism.

He said they were also slowing down their travel and spending more time in a destination rather than jumping around every few days.

“People are just taking their time in their travels and that means they can afford to go to more regional areas in some cases,” he explained.

He added: “The customers we’re seeing are more curious than ever before and travellers are more active than ever before.”

Mr Mitchell encouraged people to be conscious of how they were spending their money while travelling and to try and stay in locally owned accommodation.

Intrepid takes about 300,000 people on about 1000 trips a year, mostly in small groups, to more than 120 countries.

The focus of the tours is local experiences with groups travelling with a local leader, using local transport, staying in local accommodation, and eating local food.

To help protect the Exchange, the tour has requested all tickets be mobile only and restricted from transfer. Please note, a valid bank account or debit card within the country of your event is required to sell on the Face Value Exchange. Why Europe's most famous tourist attractions are turning people away

A large number of people outside the ruins of a large temple

They say money can't buy you happiness, but at Europe's busiest tourist hot spots, it can get you peace and quiet.

For example: Greece's culture ministry has revealed plans to offer crowd-free and private tours of Athens's Acropolis for €5,000 ($8,200).

A ticket to the ancient site usually costs about $33, and it's not the continent's only attraction offering a separate experience for those with deep pockets.

Queues at the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel in Rome can stretch around the block, but if you want a private moment with Michelangelo's ceiling masterpiece, prepare to cough up $730.

Even the British Museum, which is free, offers out-of-hours visits for $54.

These types of tours are popular "because of the privacy, the exclusivity and cachet", according to Laura Jeffrey, director of luxury travel agent Passepartout Travel.

"It's being able to tell your friends, 'We saw it with no-one else around'," she says.

"I'm surprised that it's taken this long to announce and to come forward with this idea [at the Acropolis]. I think it's a great idea if that money is being used wisely."

The luxury travel market is booming and is estimated to be worth $2.1 trillion, according to a 2023 market analysis report by Grand View Research.

The industry is expected to grow by 7.9 per cent each year from 2024 to 2030 as rich travellers spend big across the globe.

Professor of Marketing and Tourism at the University of Nottingham, Marina Novelli, says it's not clear what "the primary purpose" is behind the Greek government's decision to introduce private tours.

"There is a very big difference between implementing luxury for just commercial gain and more cash flow in the government's kitty versus introducing something that is going to be utilised to support the community and identify ways to conserve the various attractions that get visited," she says.

A Greek government spokesperson has previously told media the injection of cash would be "reinvested".

Overcrowding is also an issue at the historical site, which saw Greece last year implement a cap of 20,000 visitors a day.

It has timed entry too, meaning a certain number of people are allowed in every hour.

"The main problem in a lot of these destinations is that the carrying capacity has been identified probably 20 or 30 years ago but commercial interests have meant that they have been ignored," Professor Novelli said.

"Visitors to the Acropolis need to be reduced in order for the Acropolis to be in the long term maintained."

'Elitist' move 'creates a divide'

Overtourism is an issue hurting many residents in Europe's most popular destinations, and elsewhere around the world, who are keen to balance a much-needed industry with preserving the attractions, environment, and fabric of the local community.

Tens of thousands of protesters marched across the Canary Islands, off the coast of Morocco, last month calling for a temporary limit on the number of tourists.

Residents on the Greek island of Paros have staged multiple rallies concerned their coastline is being swamped by unsustainable beach clubs .

Meanwhile in Venice, Italian locals protested last week over a new fee visitors have to pay to access the city.

While authorities say the $8 payment is aimed at thinning out crowds along the canals during peak holiday season, residents argued their city was being turned into a theme park.

Greek news outlets are reporting the private tours of Acropolis will operate from 7am-9am and 8pm-10pm which would mean opening hours for the general public could be pushed back by an hour to 9am.

Critics have labelled the move "elitist" and say it could worsen the crowd crush at the site.

"I think it creates a divide between regular travellers and people that can afford such things," Jeremy Sampson, The Travel Foundation CEO said.

"Especially when you are talking about important historical sites and natural spaces, these are meant to be shared across society so it doesn't make sense to me that you would turn that into an elite experience."

A line of police in uniform, seen from behind, blocking a large number of people shouting and waving flags.

Europe is the most visited region in the world and the United Nations expects international tourism to return to pre-pandemic levels this year.

While it has undoubtedly boosted economies and jobs across the world, tourism experts say there needs to be a rethink on how we measure success around international travel.

"Overtourism is not necessarily the root issue; it is a symptom rather than a cause and beneath the surface is what I would call bad planning or an imbalance in tourism," Mr Sampson said.

"Business-as-usual, actually is not really viable much longer if at all."

Professor Novelli says the problem isn't new.

"People suffer short-term memory loss, pre-COVID we were talking about the fact that those numbers were unsustainable."

A man in a suit smiles at the camera

Charging wealthy visitors for a premium experience isn't new either, but it is growing. And whether the extra cash ends up preserving the experiences for future generations remains to be seen.

"The knee-jerk reaction is to say that it's a bad thing, and actually I think it really can be a force for good if the money that is spent is being spent properly and if there is some sort of attempt to balance that out for those who can't afford it," Ms Jeffrey said.

"In some ways, I wonder whether €5,000 is enough, but I also think that you have to be very careful about establishing a precedent, which is that it's only by having €5,000, €10,000 or €20,000 to spare, you can actually get into these places."

Professor Novelli also said there was a risk of expensive tours becoming more popular, and squeezing out other visitors.

"The problem is often if those tools become popular ... they might increase the number [of tours] and the issue of elitism might come into the picture even farther because the need to prioritise those costly tours will obviously inadvertently impact on those which are free or less expensive."

Greece's culture ministry was contacted for comment.

Australia’s Qantas to pay $79m over ‘ghost flights’ furore

Competition watchdog says national carrier’s advertising of cancelled flights was ‘egregious and unacceptable’.

Qantas

Australia’s flagship airline Qantas has agreed to pay $120 million Australian dollars ($79m) to settle a lawsuit over the sale of tickets for already cancelled flights.

The airline will pay a fine of 100 million Australian dollars ($66m) and provide compensation of 20 million Australian dollars ($13m) to more than 86,000 customers after advertising seats for thousands of “ghost flights” in 2021 and 2022.

“Qantas’ conduct was egregious and unacceptable. Many consumers will have made holiday, business and travel plans after booking on a phantom flight that had been cancelled,” said Australian Competition and Consumer Commission Chairperson Gina Cass-Gottlieb in a statement on Monday.

“Importantly, it demonstrates that we take action to ensure that companies operating in Australia communicate clearly, accurately and honestly with their customers at all times,” Cass-Gottlieb added.

Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson said the settlement, which is subject to court approval, was an “important step forward as we work towards restoring confidence in the national carrier.”

“When flying resumed after the COVID shutdown, we recognise Qantas let down customers and fell short of our own standards. We know many of our customers were affected by our failure to provide cancellation notifications in a timely manner and we are sincerely sorry,” Hudson said.

“The return to travelling was already stressful for many and we did not deliver enough support for customers and did not have the technology and systems in place to support our people.”

Qantas, which reported an annual profit of $1.1bn last year, has faced a barrage of controversies in recent years over rising ticket prices, claims of poor service standards, and the firing of 1,700 ground staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In September, then-CEO Alan Joyce brought forward his retirement by two months after 15 years in the top job amid widespread criticism of the airline.
