Top 9 Ways to Fix Facebook Not Loading in Safari on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Facebook native app is available on iPhone, iPad, and Android, but it can be resource-hungry. Some users prefer the Facebook web version to browse the home feed. iPhone and Mac users usually use the Safari browser to check the latest posts and reels on Facebook. But what if Facebook fails to load in Safari on iPhone, iPad, or Mac?

Well, that doesn’t mean you’ll need to install official app. But, you can always switch to one of the Safari alternatives to check Facebook. But other browsers may not offer the same efficiency, security, and tight integration with other Apple services.

1. Reload Webpage

You should first reload the Facebook webpage on Safari. Look for the refresh icon in the Safari address bar and select it. If Facebook isn’t loading, start with the tricks below.

2. Check the Network Connection

Facebook won’t load on a sketchy internet connection on iPhone and Mac. You can reset network connectivity by using the Airplane mode trick.

Step 1: Swipe down from the top right corner to access the Control Center.

Step 2: Enable and disable Airplane mode.

Step 1: Click the Control Center at the top-right corner on the menu bar.

Step 2: Click the Wi-Fi icon to connect to a high-speed wireless network.

You can try loading Facebook in Safari again.

3. Use Private Mode

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone and scroll to Safari.

When Safari’s cached data is corrupt outdated, it may fail to load some sites quickly. You can clear the corrupt Safari data and try loading Facebook again.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

Step 2: Scroll down and choose Safari. Select ‘Clear History and Website Data’ and confirm your decision.

Step 2: Choose the Privacy tab and click on ‘Manage Website Data’ button.

Step 4: Click the Remove All button and it’ll remove all the cache and data collected by Safari.

After that, restart Safari. You may notice slow performance initially as Safari is loading every website from scratch.

6. Check Facebook Status

When Facebook servers face an outage, the website won’t load in Safari, Chrome, and mobile apps. You can visit Downdetector to check the status of Facebook service. If you see a high outage graph and recent comments from others facing the same, it confirms that Facebook is experiencing some server-side problems. You’ll need to wait for Facebook to fix issues from their end and try again.

7. Disable Private Relay and VPN Connection

Private Relay is a privacy add-on for iCloud+ and Apple One subscribers. It shields your location and browsing history from the websites and local ISP. Private Relay reroutes your web traffic from another server to keep your data secure. If the service faces an outage, you may see a ‘ Private Relay is Unavailable ’ alert.

In that case, Safari may fail to load Facebook and other websites on iPhone and Mac. You should disable Private Relay using the steps below.

Step 1: Open the Settings app to select your account name at the top and choose iCloud.

Step 3: Tap on Private relay and then turn off the toggle next to Private Relay.

Step 1: Click the Apple icon in the menu bar and select System Settings from the context menu.

Step 2: When System Settings window opens, select your Apple ID name from the left sidebar. Then, select iCloud from the right pane.

Step 3: Click on Private Relay and disable it from the following menu.

You may also turn off any active VPN connection on your iPhone and Mac.

8. Close Other Safari Tabs

Safari may misbehave when you have dozens of tabs open on your iPhone and Mac. You should close unnecessary Safari tabs and try loading Facebook again.

9. Update System OS

Apple updates Safari browser via OS versions. An outdated Safari browser may fail to load Facebook properly.

Step 1: Open the Settings app to tap General. Select Software Update and install the latest OS.

Step 2: Select General from the left sidebar and then click on Software Update to check for any pending updates.

Download and install any pending updates for your Mac and restart it.

Some reasons Messenger doesn’t work on your smartphone include an inactive internet connection, Messenger facing an outage, the lack of storage space on your phone, and more.

1. Check if Your Internet Connection Is Working

If an internet-enabled app like Messenger stops working, you should first check and ensure your internet connection is working. An inactive connection can cause the app not to send or receive messages.

You can verify your connection’s status by launching a web browser on your phone and accessing any site of your choice. If you can load the site, your internet connection is working fine.

However, if the site fails to load, you need to fix the issue with your connection. You can try troubleshooting your internet problems yourself or seek your provider’s help.

2. Check if Messenger Is Down

It’s possible Messenger is facing an outage, causing interruptions in its services. In this case, you can’t send or receive messages from your contacts on the app.

One way to check if the app is experiencing issues is by heading to Facebook Messenger’s page on Downdetector. This site tells you if an online service is facing outages.

If Messenger is indeed down, you can’t do anything but wait for the company to fix the issues and bring the service back up.

Note that you can only clear an app’s cache files on an Android device. You’ll have to uninstall and reinstall the app on your iPhone to delete the app’s cached data.

• Launch Settings on your Android phone and select Apps .
• Choose App management and tap Messenger on the list.
• Select Storage usage on the app screen.
• Choose Clear cache to remove the app’s cached data.

• Launch the Messenger app on your phone.

7. Free Up Your Phone’s Storage Space

Like all other apps, Messenger requires a certain amount of free storage space on your phone to store temporary files. If your phone is running out of memory, that may be why you can’t use the Messenger app.

Facebook Messenger not loading in Safari 13/Catalina

I have a 2017 MBP running 10.15.7 with Safari 13.1.3. A couple days ago I noticed that messenger.com (the Facebook messenger web site client) won't load the message feed correctly. It places the text input box at the top of the page instead of the bottom and you can't see any of the messages in a conversation that you select. You can still send/receive them by typing in the input box, but they don't show up. Has anyone else seen this? It works ok in Firefox. It worked fine on Safari until recently.

I'd recommend that you update to Safari 15.1 - 13.1.3 is a very old version.  

They changed something starting in Safari 14 that causes eye strain for me. This occurs with Safari 14 on Catalina (even though the Catalina UI in general is fine). It effects the whole UI on Big Sur and Monterey.

• Confirm the action by clicking Remove Now button. Keep in mind that deleting website data may change the way that specific website functions.
• Use the Details button to remove data gathered by Facebook.
• Look for Facebook from the list of websites and use the Remove button to delete stored data.
• Click the Done button to finish.

Step 4: Remove Safari Cache.

The next step is to delete old cache files that might be causing the Safari error. To do this:

• Quit the Safari browser.
• Open Finder > Go.
• Select Go to Folder.
• Type the following path: ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
• Press the Return key to open this folder.
• Find the . db file inside the folder and delete it by dragging it to the Trash .
• Relaunch Safari.

Step 5: Delete Incompatible Browser Extensions.

Some browser extensions can cause Safari not to work properly. In some instances, these might show up on your browser seemingly out of nowhere. Here’s how to delete them:

• Click Safari > Preferences.
• Click Extensions from the menu.
• Choose the unwanted extension and then click Uninstall on the right.

Step 6: Set Facebook’s Certificate to “Always Trusted”.

• In the Spotlight Search, type in Keychain and press Enter .
• On the left panel, click System Roots and look for the appropriate certificate.
• Select it and expand the Trust section.
• In the When using this certificate section, tick off Always trust.

Is Facebook Messenger not working for you? We understand how important this messaging is to many of you. It is the third most popular messaging app , after all. Many of you rely on it, so it can be a pain when it suddenly stops working. We’ll give you some tips to get it back up and running in no time.

Restart the device

Force close the app, check for updates, is messenger down, clear the cache, check your internet connection, make sure you have free storage space, uninstall and reinstall the app.

This is almost always the first troubleshooting tip we recommend. A simple reboot can kick all the gears in place and iron out most software kinks. If you’re having any issues with Facebook Messenger, try restarting the device. It’s a simple solution and definitely worth a try.

While a restart should essentially close all your apps, it doesn’t hurt to manually close the Facebook Messenger app to see if that helps with any issues. If you don’t know how to do this, we have guides for closing apps on Android , iOS, and Windows .

It’s always good to make sure you’re always running the latest version of the Facebook Messenger app. Most of these come with bug fixes and performance improvements. If you’re encountering bugs and crashes, there is a chance the latest update comes with a fix for it!

Cache is usually a good thing. Cache memory stores data from websites and applications locally. It can then access these files from the storage whenever needed, instead of downloading them all over again. The thing is, these files can get corrupted and bring problems, especially if they stick around for a long time. This is why it’s good to clear the cache every now and then.

Now, if you have an iPhone, there is no way to clear the cache on apps within iOS. The only effective way to do this is to uninstall the app, and then reinstall it. We’ll go over the steps in the last section of this guide.

Is the problem your internet? There is a chance it is! First, you should ensure this is the case. The easiest way to do this is by accessing any other apps that require an internet connection, or simply opening a website using the browser. Any website will work. If nothing is connected, try other devices connected to your network. If other devices can connect to the internet, then the problem is your phone.

How to enable mobile data on Android:

• Launch the Settings app.
• Go into Network & internet .
• Select your main SIM.
• Turn on Mobile data . You can also turn on Roaming. Just ensure you know the details of your plan, as this can incur extra charges.

How to enable cellular data on iPhone:

• Go into Cellular .
• Toggle on Cellular Data .
• You can also tap on your SIM under SIMs , and turn on D ata Roaming . Make sure you know your plan’s details, as this can incur extra charges.

Facebook Messenger requires quite a bit of storage space. Especially once you start throwing in all those videos, photos, and other temporal data the app may need to store locally. Even Facebook mentions this is a common reason why the Messenger app fails.

Is nothing working? Here’s one last recommendation we have for you. Sometimes, uninstalling the app entirely and reinstalling it may fix problems. This also accomplishes another common tip, which is to log out and back into your account.

How to uninstall iPhone apps:

• Tap and hold onto the Facebook Messenger app.
• Select Remove App .
• Hit Delete App .
• Now, you can go ahead and redownload Facebook Messenger from the Apple App Store .
