Seinabo Sey

Sweden's Seinabo Sey is a soulful R&B- and electro-pop-influenced vocalist and songwriter. Born in Stockholm in 1990, Sey was first exposed to music via her father Maudo Sey, an acclaimed West African musician. After moving with her family to Halmstad, Sey enrolled at the prestigious Östergårdsskolans school, where she studied music. Academically inclined, Sey initially thought to pursue a less creative career, but by age 16 had moved back to Stockholm and enrolled in music classes at the Fryshusets Center. Influenced by such artists as Lauryn Hill, Beyonce, and Alicia Keys, Sey developed a confident performance aesthetic while at Fryshusets. After graduating, Sey began collaborating with other artists, appearing with Oskar Linnros, Linda Pira, Stor, and others. In 2013, she released the Magnus Lidehäll-produced single "Younger." The song caught the public's attention and gained even wider popularity with a 2014 remix by Kygo. Also in 2014, Sey released her debut EP, For Madeleine, and made several high-profile appearances including performances at the Swedish Grammy Awards and the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. In 2015, Sey returned with her sophomore EP, For Maudo, featuring the single "Poetic."

Seinabo Sey’s The One After Me is out now via Capitol Records, her first album in five years. As she returns with new music, it is as an artist who has found her way back to herself and what drew her to music in the first place: R&B from her teens, the reggae music played in Gambia in the mornings, and the freedom to create on her own terms.

“I have been working on this album for almost five years, and I am very pleased with the result. Musically, it has been one of the biggest challenges of my life to put it together, while at the same time, I have learned so much. I have worked with people who have changed my life even more than before,” Sey explains.

“I have love and therapy to thank for feeling freer to experience and explore things, both as a human being and as an artist. I have gone through a lot and rediscovered what music means to me.”

This change is reflected in the new songs, which Sey describes as the biggest musical turning point in her career. Unlike previous albums, she has chosen to collaborate with many producers and songwriters this time. She wrote “Yes,” the first single, in collaboration with Simon On The Moon (who also produced), Namasenda, Roger Tallroth, and Joakim Hultqvist. The song features the acclaimed Swedish artist Namasenda.

“I have always liked Swedish folk music, and it has been present in almost every song I have made for this album,” Sey notes. “Simon On The Moon had this beat he was working on, and when he played it for me, I thought it was exciting to let folk music meet a hip-hop beat in an overt way. Simon is one of the few producers who would dare to do this. I also invited Namasenda to the song because I love her digital vocal production, which is a great complement to the song.”

Seinabo Sey (born October 7, 1990) is a Swedish soul, pop and electro singer-songwriter, hailing from Södermalm, Stockholm, in Sweden.

Raised in a musically conducive household with her father, Mawdo Sey, a notable and respected musician in West Africa, Seinabo Sey moved to Halmstad, Sweden age eight and attended the Östergårdsskolans music program for gifted teenagers. The singer’s earliest musical inspiration came from the soul-inspired R&B of the ‘90s and included the likes of Alicia Keys, Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child. The influence of American media also influenced Sey’s journey through academia, and watching the Gilmore Girls inspired the singer to want to study at Yale University. Sey therefore signed up to the international baccalaureate program in Halmstead until the age of 16.

At 16 the talented singer changed course and moved to Stockholm due to the vibrant music scene. Studying an aesthetics program with a focus in soul music, Sey subsequently graduated from Fryshusets University in Stockholm, and made her mark on the music industry with her debut single “Younger”. Released in 2013 the single introduced Sey to a huge audience in Sweden and elsewhere, and followed the single up with “Hard Time” and “Pistols at Dawn”. Her single “Younger” subsequently earned a remix by revered producer and DJ Kygo, which topped the dance charts in Norway and the U.S.

In 2014 after performing at the Swedish Grammy Awards, Sey released her debut EP “For Madeleine”, named after her mother, in October of that year. Produced by Magnus Lidehäll, with songwriting assistance from Salem Al Fakir, Oscar Linnros and Vincent Pontare, the singer supported the release with a worldwide tour including dates in the UK and the U.S.

‘There’s a conclusion to my illusion, I assure you this, There’s no end to this confusion if you let it wish you well, Soul to Sell’…these were the lyrics that rang out a cappella over the auditorium as Sebinabo Sey began singing off stage before the house lights went down and she came on stage to rapturous applause. She didn’t play the whole song Younger right away, but used the introduction as a teaser of what was to come.

The Swedish singer’s powerful voice held the room in anticipation for the pop music that was to come, and her performance of her new single, Hard Time, had everyone singing along. She even held out her microphone to us in the crowd, and shouted ‘everybody with me now’ for us to sing the chorus of the hit single. She played the chorus over and over until everyone had the hang of it, and then played a harmony over the top. It was awesome to be part of such an incredible sound that we were all creating together.

She played a few tracks that weren’t from her album, and said they were a teaser for new and upcoming material. It was awesome to be the first audience to hear the new tracks, and they sound like they’re going to make an incredible foundation for a new album.

Sweden's biggest musical export to the Western world is usually electro and dance with Robyn, Swedish House Mafia and Avicii all making huge names for themselves on British and American shores. Going against this trend is Seinabo Sey who specialises in soul-pop and R & B.

Taking inspiration from grand figures including Beyonce and Alicia Keys, you can see that soul runs through Seinabo's very person as she steps onto stage. Often becoming completely entranced in her own musical space during a particularly impressive long note, you could hear a pin drop as the whole audience collectively leans in to listen. She thanks them for the support continuously and explains how surreal the opportunity to travel globally is for a young musician from Sweden. The following is definitely strong though already as the room go absolutely crazy at the introduction to 'Younger' which has become a fast favourite. There is no doubt that Seinabo Sey is going very far in her career so snap up tickets whilst you are able.

Absolutely awesome! Such a great concert and she entertained so well, the band supplemented the singer so well! Went to actually see her again the next night in Berlin! Connected so well with the audience, we were smiling, laughing, dancing and shed a few tears at one point! I love it!

Really intimare and personal with a magical feeling! Spotify doesnt do her justice thats for sure. And brukbar as always is the perfect place to be at solsiden! :) thank you seinabo!
