Slightly over three years since Midnight, the three-member band Set It Off is prepared to release their next work of art, Elsewhere , with their bright-colored era on March 11. This album is much different in sound than previously — it has a more “cool,” upbeat feel to it, but its lyrics are just as powerful as their past music. Listeners may misinterpret the songs with that feel-good music if they don’t listen to the lyrics and dig just a little for the songs’ meaning. But that’s also what can make music so great, when artists are able to provide more than one feeling through their work.

Listeners will ease their way into Elsewhere ’s dimension with the opening track “Skeleton.” The intro music is welcoming yet it sounds a bit contorted, but in a good way. Vocalist Cody Carson then introduces the vulnerability that he’ll present through the next several tunes as this song begins with the chorus. This invites others to feel vulnerable alongside him while listening, creating a deeper connection to the band, something so special between a fan and musicians. Between the different tempos of the verses, choruses, and bridge, “Skeleton” is an honest previous to the rest of the album.

As the record goes on, listeners will find familiar elements from the band’s previous work such as the members’ musical styles while also the experimenting of different ones, their energy, and the ability to entertain with strong messages throughout their songs. “Cut Off” is a fantastic example of this. A catchier song but with a sassy attitude including from the instruments, this balance is something new for them. The ending lyrics of “ Yeah, I’m good ” comes across as being done with someone, something many have felt before toward a person.

Some songs are more relatable than others of course but Set It Off seems to do a wonderful job with speaking their truth pretty clear for fans to understand their message. Such as “Who’s In Control,” there’s an unknown about who is controlling the singer’s life. Not knowing this is scary, and often people have wondered if they are in control of their lives. The song goes into more of this, though, and it’s up to the listener to interpret its meaning for themselves.

From calling someone out on their habits in “Cordial” to exposing a person in “Peekaboo” to everything in between, there’s a want to scream along to the tunes, maybe thinking of someone. The album is great when it comes to giving others the opportunity to let feelings out through these songs whether in the listener’s bedroom or in car with the windows rolled down — it’s almost if not therapeutic.

Ending with “Better Than This,” the band gets soft with their sound. An apology or some sort of love letter to someone, this one is more sentimental. There’s no better way to end this album than revealing the want to work things out with a special person. The line “ I got to get my shit together and love you better ” shows the desire of bettering oneself and doing so is such a strong trait in someone. So, if you ever want something to scream along to or are interested in a piece of work that sounds lively but with a twist of a little bit of darker lyrics here and there, then this 16-track album needs to be streamed or played on a record or CD player. These new Set It Off songs also make for an incredible nighttime drive as their blasted through car speakers. With Elsewhere , listeners will absolutely feel like they’re in a different place whether physically, mentally or emotionally while experiencing something new with the band.

Set It Off Announce Welcome to Elsewhere Tour Part 2

Set It Off will return to the road this August and September on a headlining North American tour, Welcome to Elsewhere Tour Part 2 . This leg will feature support from Oxymorrons, Rain City Drive, Concrete Castles, and Weathers. The tour kicks off on August 30 in Montreal and runs through September 27 in Seattle. ALBUM REVIEW: Set It Off – Elsewhere

Set It Off are back with their new album Elsewhere , an album that promises to take listeners on a ride through an unseen side of the band. Previously known for their own cinematic style of pop-punk, Set It Off did start to sway towards dropping the punk part and aiming for pop perfection. Though this album blurs the lines of genre and perhaps makes them even harder to pigeonhole, which in the industry is often no bad thing.

The record opens with Skeleton, a track that starts off gently but builds momentum as we reach the chorus. This is when the real flesh is added to Skeleton ‘s bones with a catchy melody and riff. That’s not all though, we even have a rap element to solidify the direction Elsewhere is going in. 

Up next is Projector, a song that vocalist Cody Carson tell us is about people that project their issues onto other people and do not accept responsibility for their own actions. Lyrically it’s an angry song accentuated by the half singing, half rapping Carson. As is so often the case with bands that use overly emotive lyrics, its musically upbeat chorus creates contrast.

Both the aforementioned songs were singles from the album, so fans may have already been familiar with them. The next couple of songs are a pleasant surprise, the likes of Loose Cannon really show off the pop possibilities that the band have previously nodded towards. This is evident in the production as much as the nature of the songs.

Tracks like Why Do I are more of a mix of genres – this particular one involves wind instruments and more angry lyrics. The only let-down that becomes apparent on this album is the lyrics sometimes seem predictable, repetitive or just a little forced. Why Do I may very well confuse listeners who could find themselves conflicted between slightly awkward instrumental work and an absolutely awesome hook. 

But hey, not all tracks can be flawless and they don’t always fit with each other. Maybe the problem is that music fans require every song to be perfectly balanced and compliment each other on an album. When actually, just being able to enjoy each track as a stand-alone song could be enough.

Other standout tracks from this album include Who’s in Control and Dangerous . The first is very poppy and the rhythm will have your hips wiggling if nothing else. Dangerous uses those rap elements again, but much more successfully than on previous songs. In general, they do a great job of creating a well-rounded album of 16 songs. A few more than on your average release, which gives them a little leeway to have an odd weaker song or two. The album ends with the song Better Than This, which makes use of strings and keys to finish things off memorably.

On this album nothing is out of bounds, that is to say anything goes. Any genre, any instrument, any lyric. Set It Off are pushing boundaries with this release and are coming into their own style once again, reinventing themselves. Yes, that can lead to a hit or miss situation, but it’s thankfully the case that there are more hits than misses on Elsewhere .

Album review: Set It Off – Elsewhere

Florida pop-rock trio Set It Off throw everything at the wall on fifth album Elsewhere, and find a good amount of it sticks…

When Set It Off first started, they were known for expertly combining pop-punk with dramatic orchestral bits, especially on their aptly-titled debut album Cinematics. Over the years, they’ve dialled down those leanings in favour of more pop elements, but Elsewhere sees them dipping back into those classical influences, blending them with the brighter sound they’ve since developed. Take songs like Cordial and Taste of the Good Life, or the sinister Peekaboo, tapping farther into the album's theatrics.

But that’s not to say it’s just a rehash of older material. This fifth album sees the band experimenting even more and wearing their varied influences on their sleeves, whether it’s R&B, hip-hop or 2000s pop. Nothing’s off the table: strings, horns, whistles – it’s all there. There are plenty of hits, including As Good As It Gets, Why Do I and the guitar solos across the album, but there are a few misses as well across these 16 songs, like Playing With Bad Luck and piano ballad Better Than This. Set It Off do a really great job of building things up through compelling hooks, but some, like Dangerous, ultimately lead to underwhelming choruses.

Set It Off have never been afraid of being over-the-top, down to frontman Cody Carson playing up the emotions in his vocal delivery. In fact, it was probably their willingness to commit to the extreme that made them stand out in the first place. Unfortunately, that approach doesn’t serve them well when it comes to the lyrics, which at times border on the ridiculous (take, for example, Projector: ' eat me up like Hannibal Lecter' ). When it all hits, however, it does make Elsewhere a blast to listen to. From the big, catchy choruses begging for sing-alongs to the chilling, swelling strings, Elsewhere is proof that pushing the limits can produce exciting results.

Verdict: 3/5

Set It Off Announce 2022 Headline Tour Dates

Tickets go on sale on Friday, July 8 at 10am local time.

SET IT OFF - singer/lyricist Cody Carson, guitarist Zach DeWall, and drummer Maxx Danziger - will return to the road this August and September on a headlining North American tour.

The band has announced the Welcome to Elsewhere Tour Part 2. This leg will feature support from Oxymorrons, Rain City Drive, Concrete Castles, and Weathers. The tour kicks off on August 30 in Montreal and runs through September 27 in Seattle. All dates are below. Tickets go on sale on Friday, July 8 at 10am local time. Get tickets here .

Set It Off will also appear with Sum 41 and Simple Plan at four dates in late August. These are makeup shows from earlier this year.

Set It Off's latest album Elsewhere is out now via Fearless Records.

Since forming in Florida in 2008, the genre-blending Set It Off have released four albums, amassed a loyal following, and relocated to L.A., while their Top 10 Spotify tracks alone have racked up 528 million plays.

The band's full-length debut album Cinematics in 2012 embraced their moodier rock side, while later efforts took on an upbeat pop twist that culminated in a darker synergy of those styles on 2019's Midnight. 2022's Elsewhere is a transitional, moody, and forward-thinking release - one in which they have faced their demons and come out happier and more full of life than ever before.
