There’s no getting around the sheer size and scale of the USA – it’s an absolute, supersized whopper – and the best way to see it all is via train.

The US has close to 3.8 million sq miles (10 million sq km) of sublime mountain ranges, parched desert, entire states engulfed in deep snow, you-gotta-go-see-it-to-believe-it cities, endless prairie land, six whole time zones and lakes so large you could lose whole countries down there. So while traveling around by plane might make sense from a convenience point of view – it’s not quite six hours to dart directly from New York to LA – there really is no better way to experience the sheer grandeur of the country than by taking one of these train vacations.

Considerably more relaxing than driving or flying, the best train rides in the US offer a leisurely, nostalgic sightseeing experience, often passing through pristine landscapes inaccessible by other means. The US is rich with amazing train journeys, but the routes listed below are the cream of the crop. From California to New England ,  here are eight epic US train trips our editors have selected, taken from Lonely Planet's  Amazing Train Journeys .

A white male passenger takes in the New Mexico desert landscape at sunset from the Amtrak train.

1. The Sunset Limited

Route: New Orleans – San Antonio – Tucson – Phoenix – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1995 miles (3211 km); 2 days

Amtrak's Sunset Limited is the ultimate American railroad ride and one of its most famous train journeys: east to west, coast to coast, clean through from the bars of New Orleans to the breakers of the Pacific Ocean. If you’ve always dreamed of taking a journey across the USA, but don’t much relish the prospect of two weeks spent cooped up in an automobile, then a ride on the Sunset Limited is the answer.

Sit back and let America’s landscapes buzz by: from Louisiana ’s bayous, past the high-rises of Houston , across the deserts of Texas and Arizona , over the Californian hills all the way to LA’s golden beaches. Saddle up, pardner: it’s gonna be quite a ride.

The Amtrak Coast Starlight Train passes along a track through hilly terrain en route to Los Angeles

2. The Coast Starlight

Route: Seattle – Portland – Sacramento – Los Angeles Distance and duration: 1377 miles (2216 km); 35 hours

Trace America’s “left coast” in all its varied splendor. The 35-hour (OK, it’s Amtrak, so maybe more) trip between Seattle and Los Angeles curves alongside crashing Pacific waves, cuts through America’s lushest agricultural land and passes below snowcapped mountains and towering redwoods. Of all the Amtrak routes, the Coast Starlight offers the most scenic variety in the fewest hours.

It’s also the only Amtrak service with a dedicated parlor car, open only to passengers who book sleepers. The parlor conjures old-time rail romance, with wood paneling and soft lighting, plus a special menu and wine-and-cheese tastings. Highlights of this train ride include dramatic sunrise perspectives on 14,179ft (4322m)  Mt Shasta , and a gorgeous midday traverse of Oregon's Cascade Range.

3. Metro-North Hudson Line

Route: New York City – Poughkeepsie Distance and duration: 69 miles (111 km); 1½ hours

Depart from New York City ’s iconic beaux arts Grand Central Terminal , stopping to admire the ornate astronomical ceiling painting in the vaulted main concourse and to slurp up oysters and a martini at the famous Oyster Bar.

Then roll through Manhattan and the Bronx and into the glorious green Hudson River Valley. Hugging the eastern banks of the river, New York’s Metro-North's Hudson line travels deep into American history. The names of the stops along the way speak to the area’s origins: Native American (Ossining, Poughkeepsie); Dutch (Spuyten Duyvil, Yonkers, Cortlandt, Peekskill); English (Hastings-on-Hudson, Scarborough). It’s a land so famously beautiful an entire art movement – the Hudson River School – was once dedicated to capturing its glory. For the cost of a burger and a beer, this view can be yours for almost two hours.

4. The California Zephyr

Route: Chicago – Omaha – Denver – Salt Lake City – San Francisco Distance and duration: 2438 miles (3924km), 51 hours 20 minutes

For soaking up the scenic grandeur of the North American continent, nothing compares with Amtrak’s California Zephyr train. This classic three-day journey travels nearly 2500 miles (4000km) across prairies, deserts, the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada on its way from Chicago to San Francisco. The scenery is magnificent throughout – especially when seen through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the lounge car – but if you can only do one section, opt for the riveting 185-mile (298km) stretch between Denver and Glenwood Springs, where the train travels through an often roadless wilderness of deep, narrow gorges near the Colorado River’s headwaters.

Near sunset, the train emerges into the majestic red rock desert of eastern Utah , then crosses overnight into the forbidding vastness of Nevada's sagebrush country, with salt flats and stark, arid mountains as far as the eye can see. Sunrise on day three reveals an entirely different desert: the blinding-white alkali flats and ghostly grey mountains near Winnemucca, Nevada. Just beyond the gambling-happy little city of Reno, the Zephyr climbs into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, then enters California’s imposing granite high country beyond the photogenic frontier town of Truckee.

5. Amtrak Downeaster

Route: Boston – Portland – Brunswick Distance and duration: 145 miles (233 km); 3 hours 25 minutes

As car-free city breaks go, this train escape is hard to beat, chugging from the downtown main streets of urban Boston to Maine ’s rural greens in under four hours. That’s from the seventh most densely populated city in the US to the state with the highest percentage of forest coverage, all in less time than it takes to cook an old-style Yankee plum pudding.

Even better, every stop on the Amtrak Downeaster features historic New England cities and towns, parks and seascapes, cottage arts and crafts, world-class shopping and stellar foods fashioned from farm-and-sea-fresh ingredients.

6. The New Mexico Rail Runner

Route: Albuquerque – Santa Fe Distance and duration: 97 miles (156 km); 90 minutes

One of America’s great unsung commuter railways, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express is a regional train that runs down the Rio Grande Valley , connecting the state’s largest city, Albuquerque, with its cultural and political capital, Santa Fe.

On the way it crosses the wide, high desert, giving views of arid mountains in all directions, and even passes through several of the state’s Native American tribal lands. A no-nonsense, clean and quick journey, its highlights are the sweeping views from the upper seats of the double-decker carriages. Taken as a day trip or a scenic but practical form of intra-state transport, the Rail Runner is a wonderful introduction to New Mexico ’s epic landscapes.

Empire Builder AMTRAK passenger train rolls into Whitefish, Montana, USA

7. The Empire Builder

Route: Chicago – St Paul or Minneapolis – Spokane – Portland or Seattle Distance and duration: 2764 miles (4448 km); 46 hours

The Amtrak Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle glides through Wisconsin 's woodlands, Minnesota's lake country and the North Dakota prairies en route to a western horizon swarming with snow-capped Rocky Mountain peaks.

From Browning , Montana, an unforgettable 60-mile run along the southern edge of Glacier National Park leads to the park entrance at West Glacier, where nature lovers will want to break their journey before continuing to Seattle.

8. The Vermonter

Route: Washington, DC – New York City– Springfield – Essex Junction ( Burlington ) – St Albans Distance and duration: 611 miles (983 km); 13 hours 45 minutes

The Amtrak Vermonter runs once daily from Washington, DC to St Albans, VT. This is the most scenic route east of the Mississippi, especially in its northern reaches, where it snakes for four hours through the bucolic green hills and photogenic villages of rural Vermont.

Starting from the nation's capital, Washington, DC, the train runs north through one of the USA's greatest metropolises, New York City, before bowling out through Connecticut , Massachusetts and New Hampshire en route to the bucolic Vermont countryside and St Albans.

Fall in Love with the Romance of Solo Train Travel

Janice Waugh

June 19, 2023 by Janice Waugh

train travel solo

Traveling solo by train has many advantages over flying. When one considers all cost and time factors, including things like parking and wait times in airports, it can be a more efficient mode of travel. If you compare it to road trips, you have the opportunity to focus on the landscape rather than the road.

From an environmental impact perspective, again, train travel wins out. “Train travel remains overall the most environmentally friendly mode of motorised passenger transport in Europe — in terms of greenhouse gas emissions — as compared to travelling by car or plane, according to two transport and environment studies published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) today.” Source

In fact, France banned short-haul domestic flights as of May 23, 2023 so that any journeys that are possible in less than two-and-a-half hours by train cannot be taken as a flight.

In addition to all the practical benefits, there is something romantic about solo train travel.

  • The rhythm of the train on the tracks.
  • The opportunity to socialize in the dining, bar, or observation cars.
  • A sense of time and space that flying cannot deliver.
  • Time for reflection as you watch the landscape go by.
  • An opportunity to slow things down in our very busy world.
  • A sense of true leisure as you spend time actually enjoying the trip.

Solo Train Travel: 10 Tips

Train travel varies around the world. The class system exists and is different everywhere. Comfort changes from one country or continent to another. However, there are some tips I can offer to get the most out of train travel just about anywhere.

1. Plan Ahead for Deals

Fare discounts may be available by booking early or buying passes. Amtrak always promotes deals for seniors, veterans, students and on certain journeys. Via Rail in Canada offers seniors 10% off. They often have Discount Tuesdays for 10% off as well. In Europe, deals come in the form of rail passes that cover all the trains run by the national operator in the country or countries they cover. If you want a deal, sign up for the newsletter of the train line you're interested in.

2. Consider a Classic Rail Journey

Amtrak has a number of amazing train journeys. I've traveled the City of New Orleans from Chicago going south and the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Los Angeles. Their most famous is The Zephyr which I haven't yet taken. You can see all their routes here . In Canada you might want to take the luxurious Rocky Mountaineer or take the less expensive Via Rail . For international train journeys, here's Lonely Planet's top train journeys .

3. Take What You Can Carry When You Travel Solo by Train

A carry-on bag is best for train travel though you do have the option of checking baggage that you might need at your destination. By having everything in a carry-on you have everything you need in one place. When a trip takes a full day and more, this is important.

4. Don't Keep Your Valuables in Your Carry-on

There's a social contract about your things on trains. With everyone vulnerable, no one is supposed to touch anything. But, you can't count on this. Plan to have all valuables on you in a purse or daypack. Keep it with you at all times so that you can comfortably enjoy the full train experience.

5. Roam and Explore

Get out of your seat and into the social areas like the dome, dining, and bar cars. This is where you will meet people and have a great time.

6. Plan for Meals and Snacks

Some trains have dining cars which is great for solo train travel. Make a reservation and you'll be seated with other passengers as they don't have the space to give you a table to yourself. It's a great opportunity to chat and learn. If there is no dining car, you may only have access to snacks and terrible food heated in a microwave. Know what your route offers before you go. Also check on whether there are options for any dietary restrictions. If necessary, bring food with you.

7. Count Your Stops When Traveling in Another Language

If you don't speak the language that is used for the announcements, take note of your arrival time and the stations that come before yours so that you are ready to get off when you get to your station.

8. Don't Rule Out an Overnight in Coach

Book a sleeper if possible. If you're riding coach, use your carry-on to extend your seat–it is almost the exact height of a seat on a train. On one trip, I was lucky not to have anyone beside me so for two nights I was able to use the carry-on to extend the two seats into a fairly uncomfortable bed (though far more comfortable than sitting up all night).

9. Arrive Early as Trains Typically Leave on Time

Arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before departure. If you are unfamiliar with the station, the system, and the language, leave more time.

10. Pack Disinfectant Wipes

Carry disinfecting wipes and a small amount of toilet paper in your day pack to make that bathroom (that far too many people have used while the train bumps along) a bit more pleasant.

image: solo travel by train

Explore Beyond the Train Station

When you arrive at your destination or if you arrive at your departure station early and want to explore, take a walk a few blocks away from the station, noting your route. In some cities, train stations are magnets for pickpockets and other undesirable situations. Restaurants also tend to be more expensive at the station. However, trains typically go to the center of cities. They are central and there will likely be interesting things to see nearby.

Solo Travel by Train: Inspiration from Our Community

It seems I'm not the only one who loves train travel. Here's what members of the Solo Travel Society on Facebook have to say when I asked about their best and worst train trips.

  • I love it! I traveled from Delhi to Kochi by train via Jaipur, Bangalore, Mysore, and Goa. Best three weeks of my life. I also crossed the Taklamakan Desert from Jiuagyan to Kashgar, another fantastic experience. There's nothing quite like it. Rosemary
  • Best train experience: Seward/Anchorage/Denali. Worst train experience: none so far . Rui
  • Five days from Shanghai to Urumqi. It was my birthday, so I got a first class compartment. I shared it with a Chinese couple til Lanzhou, then they were gone and for over three days it was just me and Western China. Well, there was the birthday bash back in coach, with a crazy Uiyghur man and his boombox, but that's another story! Scott
  • Taking the train in India is one of my all-time fave travel adventures–though it can be frustrating due to delays, disorganization, noisy kids, A/C turned up way too high, and slightly scary food choices. My worst trip ever was 21 hours from Delhi to Jaisalmer on a crowded, old, dirty train. I saw rats on the floor and cockroaches crawling the wall beside my head as I was falling asleep. Mariellen
  • I love solo train travel in Europe. In Burma, the seat was so uncomfortable on an over-nighter I was tempted to lie on the floor. Velo
  • On a trip from Rabat to Casablanca, passengers brought their goats on board! Christie
  • I adore it! On the Florence to Munich night train on Christmas Eve we brought Champagne on board, had our own private car, woke up as the sun was coming up and the snowy scenery was stunning. As for the worst, I can't beat Christie's goat story. My creepy dudes on a blacked out train from Taormina to Palermo just sounds like me whining. That's hilarious!
  • Love it! I'm surprised no-one's mentioned the Trans-Siberian yet. I did the Trans-Mongolian in 2009 over Christmas: 3 weeks from London to Beijing by train all the way! The longest bit was Moscow-Irkutsk, sharing a cabin with a Russian who played solitaire on his laptop for five days straight. The constant clicking drove me insane. But I will never forget the incredibly white landscapes, the ladies selling fish at the stations, the soldiers showing me their photos, the emptiness of the Gobi desert, nor the bone-shattering cold. -35C on Christmas morning searching for a hotel in Ulanbataar was a highlight only because of the warm welcome I received when I finally found one. It was one of the best trips of my life (so far!)
  • My best train trip was from St. Petersburg, Russia to Kiev, Ukraine. We partied all night with cheap vodka and crackers. My worst trip was a train ride in Peru (Cuzco to Machu Picchu) which was boring and long. Kristine
  • On the overnight train in Myanmar, there were no beds, so I just slept on the floor in the aisle, between Burmese businessmen and officials. Not a disaster, by any means, but not comfy like the Thai and Malaysian sleeper trains, that's for sure! LashWorldTour

This Woman Traveled Solo Across the U.S. by Train During the Pandemic — Here's What She Learned

“What this whole journey has taught me is that I am a lot braver than I think I am.”

solo rail journeys

Brenda Nguyen didn’t initially intend to take a train across the country . When she accepted a job in California earlier this year, her plan was to take a road trip from Boston to her new home in San Francisco. However, due to the many complications brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, her cross-country move didn’t exactly go as she anticipated. Nguyen will be the first to admit that it certainly wasn’t the quickest or most cost-effective way to get to her final destination, but she told Travel + Leisure that the trip changed the way she views herself as a traveler for the better. And for the skeptics, she documented her entire journey on TikTok .

“I’ve always wanted to do a road trip across the country, but considering how there would be so many stop points and … more opportunities to be exposed to people, that was concerning to me,” Nguyen said. She ultimately decided on the train because it would limit her touch points with people along the way.

Nguyen’s trip was split in two parts; first, Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited train from Boston to Chicago, which took around 21 hours. Then, the California Zephyr , which travels through the Rocky Mountains and the American West, ending in Emeryville, CA, though she disembarked in Sacramento. On the first train, Nguyen booked a Viewliner Roomette , which she described as a “cozy and cramped space.” The private cabin has space for two passengers, with a chair that converts into a bed, as well as a top bunk, toilet, and sink, with a shared shower in the hall. Nguyen said she was able to remain socially distant from staff and other passengers for the majority of the trip, and noted that the only time she spent in common areas was the dining cart for dinner. For guests’ safety, Amtrak takes reservations ahead of time and staggers tables, which Nguyen said reassured her sense of safety.

By the time she boarded the California Zephyr, Nguyen had hit her stride. The name of the train itself meant she was that much closer to her new home. But first, a two-and-a-half day journey that took her across the rest of the western U.S. She stayed in a Superliner Bedroom on the Zephyr, which is a bit more spacious, since it includes a bed, chair, and in-room bathroom, with both a toilet and private shower. Perhaps most importantly, this train provides stunning views of the Rockies and Sierra Nevadas.

While on the train, Nguyen kept herself entertained with her Nintendo Switch, journal, and, of course, the breathtaking views outside her window. Some areas had limited cell phone service and Wi-Fi, which Nguyen said she was ultimately grateful for. “It was really a time to unplug, reminisce, stare out the window, and soak in all the views. At one point, I had my camera out to take some photos, but I just didn’t want to take any photos anymore because I wanted to take it all in.”

Nguyen’s itinerary happened to coincide with the start of the Grizzly Creek Fire, just outside of Glenwood Springs, CO, on Aug. 10. The resulting views were some of the most striking of the trip, she said. “That was the moment I remember saying to myself, ‘I’m definitely not on the East Coast anymore.’"

Nguyen also pointed out that this trip taught her to slow down, especially when it comes to travel. Since so much of travel is often about powering through various modes of transportation to arrive at one’s destination as quickly as possible, it’s easy to see flights, train rides, and car trips as merely a means to an end. But Nguyen pointed out that transportation can very well be part of a meaningful travel experience, especially within the context of the pandemic. “I’ve always been very ‘go-go-go,’ especially when it comes to traveling; working a 9-to-5 schedule, there’s only so much time off that we have," she said. "[Now] it’s really about how to maximize the time that I have. For this chapter in my life, time is so different than what it once was ... it really gave me the opportunity to take a breath, and appreciate the journey to the destination, as opposed to to just looking forward to the destination.”

While her train journey was clearly an experience full of personal growth, so was the process of sharing the trip online. Sharing content is nothing new to Nguyen; she’s managed a food and travel blog and Instagram account for nearly five years, though TikTok is a more recent venture. She told T+L she hopes her experiences help people understand that travel is more accessible than they might think.

“At the end of the day, this is my subjective experience, but here are some the objective ways you can go about this process, and some of these personal experiences that may occur may vary, but we can go along the same path and maybe get to the same destination,” she said. And while it will likely be some time before we travel again in the same ways we used to, Nguyen’s experience is proof that safe travel during the pandemic can still be both meaningful and enjoyable. And in the meantime, there’s nothing wrong with a little TikTok-inspired wanderlust.

Me, myself and Interrail – a solo train trip around Europe

What to do when you’ve bought two passes but your husband won’t go? Go anyway and have a fantastic time doing exactly what you want

Does there come a point in every marriage when you realise you don’t know your spouse very well after all? For me, that moment came not when watching yet another ill-judged birthday present shoved to the back of my husband’s wardrobe, but when I noticed a half-price sale on Interrail passes and decided to book a pair for what I felt sure would be an excellent and perhaps even romantic late-summer adventure.

I was deep in planning reverie, weighing up the merits of chasing the sun in southern Europe versus getting hygge in Scandinavia, when my beloved announced that sitting on trains for a fortnight was the opposite of what he considers a holiday.

Solo Interail trip Helen Pidd

It was only then that I read the small print and learned there would be no refunds and no name changes. There was only one option: I would go alone. It was a slightly daunting prospect, though I recall once being a very independent person, travelling the world for the Guardian on assignments that included a memorably disastrous undercover trip to Myanmar.

I remembered my first foray into Interrailing as an idiotic 18-year-old in 1999. I ended the month no longer on speaking terms with my travel companion, a boy from my A-level German class. I could see the benefits of going solo, with no one to argue with about whether to pay the supplement for the fast train to Milan, or the wisdom of sleeping on the platform for an early departure.

Helen Pidd on first Interrail experience.

We were on such a tight budget then – £15 a day for food, accommodation and those sneaky supplements – that we wild camped some nights in urban parks. It was character-building stuff, especially when we were robbed as we slept in Cologne by a selective thief who ransacked Daniel’s rucksack but took nothing of mine.

Twenty-three years later, I set off from my home in Stockport with a more generous allowance of £100 a day and absolutely no intention of kipping in any parks or stations.

It is probably worth pointing out at this point that Interrailing is no longer a particularly cheap holiday unless, perhaps, you get half-price tickets and your husband comes with you to split the hotel bills. A second-class global Interrail ticket for travel in 33 countries now costs €704 (£605) for a month (€528 or £455 for 12- to 27-year-olds). The further away from London you live, the better the value, because the ticket includes an outward and inward journey in your home country. With a peak time open return from Manchester to London now costing a scandalous £369.40, I recouped more than half a full-price ticket simply by travelling in the rush hour.

Brasserie Les Philosophes, Paris, Helen Pidd’s first stop.

It’s also not quite the spontaneous holiday you might imagine, at least not when it comes to crossing the Channel. Eurostar only offers a limited number of seats for Interrail pass holders (charging a supplement of £26.50 each way) and the most popular crossings sell out quickly. That scuppers my plan to begin my continental odyssey in Amsterdam; I have to start in Paris instead. I arrive in time for dinner at Les Philosophes in the Marais, where I sip vin rouge and eat an obscenely large portion of duck rillettes. I congratulate myself on being a strong, independent woman who doesn’t need a man, while wishing my husband was there to chat to.

Balking at the single person tax on hotel rooms, I pay too much (€65 or £56) for a curtained bunk in a four-woman dorm at The People , a bougie hostel chain. The next morning I worry that the red wine might have caused me to snore after one of my roommates gives me a filthy look. I decide I am too old for hostels as I pack my rucksack, then scoot around Paris for the day and catch the night train (supplement €21.60) to the south of France, which leaves Paris Austerlitz at 20.48, arriving in Antibes just after 9am.

Not realising there are women-only carriages (tick Espace Dame Seule when making your reservation), I fret about being trapped in a couchette with a bunch of pervy men, but end up sharing with four respectful blokes and one woman, waking up to a view of the French Riviera.

On the beach in Antibes.

Antibes is just as beautiful as Picasso and Monet made out and on the beach I have no problem getting helpful strangers to mind my bag every time I go in the sea. On day two though, I treat myself to a sunlounger (€35) at Royal Beach, a private pier belonging to the Royal Antibes hotel.

after newsletter promotion

After a few days in Antibes, I take the glorious coastal train into Italy and disembark at Sanremo, which hosts the finale of one of my favourite bike races (Milan-Sanremo). I stay in an old hotel high up in the old town, accessed by a labyrinth of arched alleyways and quad-busting steps, and spend the next morning gawping at the art deco villas perched above the sea.

Sanremo’s old town.

Without anyone to express their disapproval, I catch the fast train to Milan (supplement €3). There’s just time for a slice of seriously good pizza at the Mercato Centrale food hall inside the central station before I take my next train, to Tirano on the Swiss border. Another excellent journey, this route hugs Lake Como as it winds towards the Alps. The only reason I’m going to Tirano is to catch yet another train (did my husband have a point?): the Bernina Express .

Also known as the Red Train, the Bernina Express takes passengers on the highest railway tracks in Europe and the steepest in the world, through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges into Switzerland. An Interrail pass allows a seat in one of the ordinary carriages, but I paid a supplement of CHF26 (£23) for a berth in one of the panoramic carriages, with almost floor-to-ceiling windows. It was worth every centime, with the Brusio spiral viaduct – an engineering marvel, which the train travels first under and then over – a particular highlight, along with the free Edelweiss tea and Swiss chocolates.

Brussels, Helen Pidd’s final stop.

After a night in the car-free centre of Chur, I take umbrage at being charged £5 for a cup of tea and cross the border into cheaper Austria. I enjoy swimming in Lake Constance in Bregenz, before heading back west to Cologne to exorcise the trauma of 1999. I do a park run by the Rhine then catch the train to Brussels, the final stop on my solo whiz around western Europe: six countries in 10 days.

Would I recommend solo Interrailing? Emphatically yes. I enjoyed the freedom of heading wherever I liked, staying longer or leaving early on a whim, though I often felt self-consciously alone after dark. I’d do it again – I just wouldn’t bother buying my husband a ticket next time.

8 USA Train Trips for Solo Women Over 50

Do you like traveling by train? Do you enjoy multi-day train trips? I recently started obsessing about train trips and went into a rabbit hole of research, and I am now more excited than ever to plan my next train trip in the USA.

In this article you will learn about:

  • The California Zephyr – Cross the country on this multi-day trip from Chicago to Los Angeles.
  • The Coast Starlight – Ride on this scenic train trip that runs along the west coast from Seattle to Los Angeles.
  • The Rocky Mountaineer – This train route takes you on a stunning journey through the American Southwest
  • The Empire Builder – Another Amtrak train journey that takes you from Chicago to Seattle, passing through the stunning Glacier National Park and the Columbia River Gorge.
  • The Grand Canyon Railway – The historical train takes you on a memorable journey to one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders, the Grand Canyon.
  • The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad – This historic steam train journey takes you through the rugged and beautiful San Juan Mountains of Colorado and New Mexico.
  • Alaska Railroad, The Borealis – A luxury train journey that takes you through the stunning wilderness of Alaska.
  • The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad – This is an iconic train journey that takes you through the breathtaking canyons of the San Juan National Forest in Colorado.

There’s just something about traveling by train. It evokes a time gone by when rail travel was luxurious, and the carriages were elegant and festive. There is part nostalgia and part slow living that I enjoy about train voyages.

How to Prepare for a Multi-Day Train Trip

Train travel is generally slower than air travel, but it allows you to relax and enjoy the scenery, which is a big part of the experience. Many train trips offer sleeper cars where you can rest and sleep during the night and wake up at a new destination in the morning.

Some train trips also have stops along the way where you can get off and explore the local area before getting back on the train. Depending on the train trip, the duration can range from a few hours to several days. It’s always best to check the specific itinerary and schedule of the train trip you’re interested in to plan your journey accordingly.

Preparing for a multi-day train trip involves some planning and preparation to ensure that you have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable journey.

Check the Train Schedule

Before departing, check the train schedule to plan your journey and know when you’ll be arriving at your destination. Familiarize yourself with the stops (if any) along the way.

Know What Is Included

Find out what is included and what is not included in your package or ticket purchase. Things like snacks and meals may or may not be part of the deal.

Pack Light and Accordingly

Since space is limited on trains, it’s best to pack light and bring only the essentials. Bring comfortable clothes, a few changes of clothing, and toiletries. Most train trips have a baggage limit, so be sure to check the specific requirements before packing.

Bring Entertainment

For the longer multi-day trips, it’s a good idea to bring some entertainment. This can include books , magazines, music, podcasts , or movies on a tablet or laptop. Don’t forget to pack your chargers for your electronic devices.

Check the Weather

Depending on the season and location of your train trip, the weather can vary widely. Be sure to check the weather forecast and pack accordingly, especially if you will be doing some excursions off the train.

Bring Snacks and Drinks

While most train trips offer dining cars or food service, it’s always a good idea to bring some snacks and drinks, especially if you have any dietary restrictions.

How to Choose a Train Trip

Several personal factors would make you pick one train trip over another. Here are a few things to consider.

Scenic Beauty

Do you enjoy nature and panoramic landscapes? If so, choose train trips that offer stunning views of mountains, forests, and coastlines.

Comfort and Convenience

Choose train trips that offer comfortable seating and modern sleeper cars for multi-day trips. Check the photos of the accommodations on the website.

Safety and Security

Look into train trips that are known for being safe and secure, that are reliable and that have a good reputation for customer service.

Accessibility

If you have mobility issues or other disabilities, research train trips that have accessibility and accommodations that suit your needs.

Cultural and Historical Significance

Do you love history and culture? Look for train trips that pass through areas with significant cultural or historical significance, such as national parks, historic landmarks, or iconic cities.

Read Reviews from Fellow Travelers

Read comments and ratings on websites like Tripadvisor and Lonely Planet to learn about others’ first-hand experiences.

The Ghan (north-south) or the India-Pacific (east-west) rail trips in Australia are wonderful journeys across a spectacular country. 🇦🇺

Doug DeNunzio

It will be a fun adventure regardless of what the point of it is.

Tina

I’ve been on several of these train trips multiple times. I think it’s important to distinguish between Amtrak and other private RRs such as Rocky Mountaineer and Silverton Durango. That affects price and available amenities. I love train travel but this article is incomplete in that way.

Nancy

These will be fun adventures for me. Thank you.

Karen

Thank you for this information on my favorite way to travel. When I moved to the West Coast many years ago, I had a sleeper on the Empire Builder and loved all of it. The only thing I wish I could’ve changed was the timing – it was autumn and by the time we reached Glacier National Park in Montana, it was dusk and too dark to see much. I’m looking forward to some of the other trips you mentioned.

America by Train – Solo Travel Adventures

Enjoy this post share the love.

solo rail journeys

America by Train – Solo Travel Adventures:  Summer is fast approaching. With no way to be sure which countries will be open for summer vacations, Americans are largely planning domestic travel for 2021. National and state parks are at the top of everyone’s list with families partial to getting there via road trips.  However, for solo travelers, safety concerns and practical challenges, like changing a tire, can make long drives alone less attractive.

In my college days, I was ready to “See America” overland. Not having a car and with only a student’s budget, I headed out for five weeks alone on an open-ended bus trip with only an overnight bag.  With no plan, I slept on the bus at night and went sightseeing by day wherever the bus ended up at sunrise. I covered 3,000+ miles from Washington, DC to Los Angeles without battling rush hour traffic, searching for legal parking and hearing my GPS shout “recalculating” every time I was lost.

While I am really glad that I had an early start on seeing all fifty states, I would not choose a bus trip now except for short day excursions. The biggest challenges were:

  • Trying to sleep as the bus swayed from side to side
  • Tiring of fast food meals at bus stops
  • Being concerned about safety as a female solo traveler
  • Not having the option to stretch my legs
  • Adjusting to limited bathroom facilities

In addition, in 2021, with the pandemic still an issue, buses do not offer an opportunity for social distancing. As a result, train travel this summer offers the best timely solution to restart US travel. (For information on official recommendations as to COVID-19 healthcare practices, see the CDC.gov .)

America by Train – Solo Travel Adventures:

Why give up the independence of a road trip for a solo train journey?

Europeans have long favored train travel, especially when confronted with their historically high gas prices. However, distances there are shorter, and extensive railroad networks exist in, and between, almost every country of the European Union.

Here are the top advantages of train travel over road trips now:

  • Letting someone else take care of everything. 2020-2021 has been a year of lockdowns and “DYI’s”. We have all run our course from “Be your own barber” to “Do your own home repairs”. Train travel journeys mean someone else has to take care of transportation, meals and daily logistics.
  • For those driving alone, personal security is still an issue. Losing your way at night or having a car breakdown in a remote area can be dangerous.
  • The US national passenger rail service, Amtrak, has both daily service between cities and major coast-to-coast routes .
  • Amtrak is offering “ roomettes ” on select long-haul service providing both privacy and built-in social distancing during the pandemic. Having once luxuriated overnight in a sleeper car from Chicago to Washington, DC, I highly recommend it. The sleeper cars also have access to a private shower and bathroom.  Added amenities include: turndown service, priority boarding, assistance with bags, complimentary meals onboard and in major stations, lounge access.
  • Pricing can be competitive when compared with the costs of driving: high gas prices, parking rates, tolls, overnight lodging, meals and wear and tear on your car or paying car rental costs.

Here are five different ways to explore the US this summer whether you go independently or join a  group via Amtrak Vacations or other providers, such as Vacations by Rail .

Option One: “Gal or Guy Getaways” – Living the High Life for Short-Tern Trips:

solo rail journeys

If you have cabin fever and are ready for a short, nearby mini-vacation, consider:

  • Taking a New York City Theatre Weekend.
  • Walking Boston’s Freedom Trail.
  • Visiting the Art Institute of Chicago, doing some shopping (or window shopping) along the Magnificent Mile.
  • Enjoying lower summer rates at an Arizona spa.
  • Riding horses at a dude ranch.
  • Strolling along Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco.
  • Joining a vineyards tour and wine tasting in Napa Valley.

America by Train – Solo Travel Adventures: Alternate Routes:

Option Two:  Explore America’s Northernmost Route:

solo rail journeys

  • Start in New York City or Washington, DC.
  • Head out to Chicago.
  • Have a country stopover at a dairy farm in Wisconsin. On my cross-country trip, I arrived in Racine, just in time to see a new calf born that day.
  • Journey onward through the Badlands with a stop at Rapid City, South Dakota, for a tour of nearby MT Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial . Motorcycle enthusiasts should check out the annual summer Sturgis rally.
  • Continue on to Montana and Glacier National Park.
  • Arrive in Seattle and board an Alaska cruise to take advantage of summer 2021 specials with no single supplement. Top Solo Travel Destination-Alaska | Solo Trekker 4 U

Option Three:  Discover the US via the Middle Route Coast-to-Coast:

Solo travel package Tuscany no single supplement with early booking

This was the route I took in my own US overland tour. I quickly learned that Chicago was only one-third of the way cross-country.  It was easy to see how vast the western states were in contrast to the Eastern seaboard.

These are stops along the way I recommend:

  • As noted above, Chicago can’t be missed.
  • Saint Louis with 3 million residents has much to see starting with the Arch. If you are claustrophobic, you may opt instead for the Mississippi River Boat Tour.
  • Denver was one of the highlights of my journey westward albeit having arrived at dawn. I took a self-guided tour of the state capitol as the cleaning crew started a new day.  In ski season, Denver is also a connection point for trains to Winter Park .
  • Rivaling my visit to Denver was my stop in Salt Lake. Surrounded by vast mountains, it has a unique history in the American West and is well worth an overnight stop. To swim in the Salt Lake, there are easy day tours from downtown.
  • Ending in San Francisco, I was thrilled at my first glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge  followed by a  a stroll down the “the crookedest street in the world” and jumping off and on trolley cars.

Option 4:  Discover America on the Southern Route:

Solo Travel Destinations-American South

A few of the highlights en route to Los Angeles include:

  • New Orleans which is much more than the site for Mardi Gras. Filled with America’s early history from the Louisiana Purchase to the War of 1812, both the French Quarter and the Garden District have architecture not seen elsewhere in the US. While the city is known for jazz and world-class cuisine, it also offers outdoor adventures from ghost tours to bayou expeditions gliding along among the alligators.
  • San Antonio is rich with history from the Alamo and still intact early Spanish missions. The 15 mile San Antonio River Walk is a big tourist draw as the country’s largest urban ecosystem.  (See the city’s official tourist site for “Local Adventures”/” Girls Getawa y”?!)
  • Santa Fe is known for its colonial architecture, i.e ., the Basilica Church of St. Francis Assisi, and  lively local art, led by the Georgia O’Keefe Museum.  In addition, Santa Fe has five national parks  making it possible to combine a cultural and historic tour with a more active hiking vacation.

America by Train – Solo Travel Adventures: An Active Vacation:

Option Five:  National Parks:

solo rail journeys

For hiking, wildlife sightings and in some cases, white water rafting, the national and state parks are hard to beat. In addition, prices are low, and camping is often available/ Most are accessible through a combination of rail and private tours.

Here is our list of those not to miss:

Utah:  Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, Zion

Wyoming/Montana: Yellowstone

California: Yosemite

Arizona/Nevada: Grand Canyon

Montana: Glacier National Park

Solo Female Travel Guide: Solo Train Travel Tips for Amtrak Rides

Sharing is caring!

Solo train travel is not something most people gravitate toward for travel planning. Train rides are longer than plane rides and can have multiple connections. Yet, traveling by train is one of my favorite forms of travel.

But why trains? Well, they are more relaxing than planes and buses. If you want solitude, you will have a higher chance of sitting alone. Also, routes are more remote and unique since you can only enjoy train rides. And with scenic train rides, you can sleep in a roomette.

So if you are considering solo train travel on Amtrak , here are more tips and details to make sure you are ready!

What you need to know about solo train travel

solo rail journeys

Is it safe to travel solo on a train?

In short, yes! I have ridden trains worldwide solo from Milwaukee to Chicago, Orlando to Charleston, Chicago to California, and even around Portugal and Spain. Overall, I think solo train travel is a safer form of travel. Although I stay alert to my surroundings as a Black woman traveler, I feel like I do not have to be “on” as much on trains.

But just because it is safer, doesn’t mean you don’t use common sense. Solo train travel is still isolated as you only can walk around the train. I recommend upgrading from the coach class to the next tier for maximum comfort and privacy. Upgrading could mean you have more freedom as a solo train traveler. You could  leave your belongings in your room unattended and not have to worry if they are stolen.

Is it boring to travel on a train?

Yes, solo train travel can get boring if you are not prepared. For most of my childhood, traveling on road trips prepared me to sit for long distances. If you are new to long train rides, I recommend bringing things to do. Card games, a book, a journal, and downloading movies, podcasts, or music are ideal. Any activities that you enjoy and are portable will help you prevent boredom.

Solo train travel tips you need to know

solo rail journeys

Be prepared to mingle

Solo train travel means people will have questions! Why are you alone?” “What’s your story?” Everyone is curious about the mysterious traveler. It can be exhausting, but also make for insightful conversations.

If you are not an extroverted person, have talking points. Chances are most of your conversations will be one-off interactions. Prepare a few key things to discuss with people such as hobbies, why you love to travel, your opinion of the food on the train, etc. Think of these points as your “small talk toolbox” for solo traveling.

Split your time in the roomette and observation car

It is easy to get caught up in roomette life. But remember to go and sit in the observation car for another train view! Most roomette travelers sit on the opposite side of the train than their roomette. This way you can observe both sides of the scenery.

Splurge on the roomette

After years of riding the train solo in coach, I splurged on the roomette on the California Zephyr. I appreciated not worrying about food and having a bed to sleep more comfortably. As a solo train traveler, I also loved the alone time. Using your small talk toolbox with strangers can get tiring. The roomette was a much-needed place to retreat.

Bring things to do

Solo traveling via overnight train for a long time does go quickly. But it can be easy to get bored as you are traveling by yourself. So for anyone, especially solo train travelers, bring activities to keep you busy. Some ideas are books, your journal, games, and downloading movies or tv shows on your computer.

Get to know the Amtrak staff

People are more likely to speak to you when traveling solo via train. In my experience as a solo train traveler, the Amtrak staff is friendly (overall) if you want to have some basic interaction while on the train, talk to them! They are full of stories and tips – just make sure they aren’t actively working when you decide to bug them.

solo rail journeys

  Plan for delays

Amtrak train travel tips are not complete without noting the delays. Since Amtrak shares the tracks, train delays are bound to happen. Do not plan anything immediately after your train is scheduled to arrive. Leave that time open just in case you come later than expected.

Pack earbuds, plugs, motion sickness medication, and a sleeping mask

Train travel essentials are not complete without these four items! Earbuds or headphones are necessary to listen to music, podcasts, lo-fi music to sleep, etc. Earplugs are ideal for light sleepers and a sleeping mask to shut out all light. And of course, you cannot forget motion sickness medication such as Dramamine, Sea Nausea Relief bands, or ginger chews.

Use the time to unplug from social media

Solo train travel on Amtrak often means no wifi. While you can use cellular data, I encourage you to unplug. Leave your phone in the roomette and hang out in the observation car to relax and enjoy the views. Social media can wait!

solo rail journeys

Get up and use your breaks and stops

While on the California Zephyr, I made the mistake of not utilizing my breaks. If you are traveling solo via train for two days or more, I recommend using those fresh air stops. Your body needs to stretch and get some sunlight. Also, it is fantastic to see different stops along the routes.

Don’t let the long hours dissuade you

Since the U.S is a large country, the most scenic Amtrak train rides can be 35 to 52 hours long. However, do not let the travel time stop you from taking the trip. With your activities and taking the time to relax it flies by quickly.

What you need to know when traveling solo via train booking with Amtrak

solo rail journeys

Roomette price is technically for two people

Roomettes can be shared! My sister and I rode the Amtrak Coast Starlight together from LA to Seattle and booked a roomette. Though I can admit, it isn’t the most comfortable setup when traveling with another person. It felt a bit snug for us! But it is not impossible.

Be sure to register for the Amtrak rewards

I’m a big supporter of occurring points to get travel rewards. Amtrak has its rewards program like Delta, American Airlines, and other aircraft carriers. It is in your best interest to register before you go. A scenic train ride can amass hundreds of points.

You can’t choose your room

With a few scenic train rides under my belt, I never picked my room. I am unsure how Amtrak decides which car you stay in during the trip. It may be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Yet, I do not think this is a big deal for solo train travelers or anyone else unless you have access needs. A simple fix to observe sights on the opposite side of the train is to sit in the observation car.

Amtrak solo train travel isn’t as bad as you think

solo rail journeys

For me, solo train travel has completely reignited my love for traveling. There is something relaxing about being on a train and going along for the ride. Amtrak’s roomette option is costly, but it is my go-to from now on when I can afford it.

I also like that you do not have to plan much on a solo scenic train ride.  I could sightsee from my roomette bed if I wanted to. The only thing I needed to coordinate was my transportation, including my room and board on the train.

Thus, if you have the opportunity to ride the train solo, I say go for it! Yes, the delays and small talk with strangers can be annoying. However, I think it is a unique travel experience you can only get on a train ride. So make your ride an overnight one if you dare!

Solo Train Travel in The UK

solo rail journeys

From Platform To Destination: Solo Train Travel Made Simple

If you're planning on taking a staycation or are visiting the UK from abroad, one way to get around the country is by train. Traveling alone by train allows you to enjoy beautiful views passing by your window, meet interesting people, and have time to reflect on things as you watch the world go by.

solo rail journeys

Pick a Destination That Inspires You

There are so many places to visit in the UK so firstly, decide what kind of experience you are looking for on this trip. Do you want to explore historical sites or see famous landmarks. Maybe you prefer hiking in stunning natural landscapes or discovering a new city? With so many options, it's important to pick a place that interests you the most.

You can check out websites like Split My Fare for a list of top train destinations in the UK. If you're unsure where to go, here are a few examples of popular train journeys:

London to Edinburgh : This journey takes you from the bustling capital of England to the picturesque capital of Scotland. Along the way, you'll pass through beautiful countryside and historic cities like York.

Glasgow to Mallaig : Known as the West Highland Line, this scenic route takes you from Glasgow through the stunning Scottish Highlands to the coastal town of Mallaig. You'll pass by lochs, mountains, and the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct.

London to Bath : Travel from London to the historic city of Bath, famous for its Roman baths and Georgian architecture. The journey offers glimpses of the English countryside and charming towns along the way.

Manchester to Windermere : This journey takes you from the vibrant city of Manchester to the Lake District National Park, where you can disembark at Windermere. Enjoy scenic views of rolling hills, forests, and lakes during the trip.

London to Oxford : Journey from London to the famous university city of Oxford. Along the way, you'll see the English countryside and charming villages before arriving in Oxford with its iconic spires and historic buildings.

Plan Your Route

One great thing about traveling by train in the UK is that England and Wales have extensive train networks that make it easy to get around while enjoying beautiful scenery. With a bit of planning, you can figure out exactly how to get to your destination and make the most of any stops along the way.

Use websites such as Trainline or National Rail to find train times and routes, and compare ticket prices. Think about getting an open return ticket so you can be flexible with your return date.

And don't forget about railcards—they offer discounts for students, seniors, and young travelers. Make sure to download offline maps on your phone and bring a physical map too. This way, you'll always know where you're going, even if you don't have internet service.

Traveling by train means you'll need to carry all your stuff yourself. Start by packing only the essentials; some versatile clothes, comfortable shoes for walking, a rain jacket, etc. Look for items that are compact and lightweight, like packing cubes, a small backpack, and clothes that can be worn in different ways. Don't forget important items like sunscreen (and an umbrella), chargers, toiletries, and snacks. Bringing your own water bottle and snacks can save you money on drinks and food during your journey.

It's also a good idea to have a basic first aid kit in case of emergencies. With smart packing, you can fit everything you need into a small backpack (around 30-40 liters) that's comfortable to carry. Bonus points if it has lockable zippers to keep your belongings safe during overnight trips.

Find Affordable Places to Stay

Accommodation costs can take up a big part of your travel budget. But with some smart planning and booking strategies , you can save money on where you stay and spend more on train tickets and activities.

Hostels are a great option. They often have private rooms as well as dorms, so you can choose what works best for you. Look for highly-rated hostels that are close to train stations for convenience.

You can also find budget-friendly Airbnbs all over the UK. Use the search filters to find entire apartments within your budget. And don't be afraid to ask hosts if they offer discounts for longer stays. You might be able to save even more money.

Embrace Spontaneity

Sure, you could plan out your train tickets and activities in advance. But where's the fun in that? One of the best things about traveling alone is being able to go with the flow and follow your instincts. Let yourself explore and see where each day takes you, using your planned route as a rough guide.

Talk to locals and other travellers to discover hidden gems and new experiences that you hadn't considered before. Instead of just visiting the popular tourist spots, explore up-and-coming neighbourhoods for a more authentic experience. By embracing spontaneity, your solo train journey becomes a more unique adventure.

solo rail journeys

Capture Memories

When you're not enjoying the scenery from the train window, you'll probably be taking photos with your smartphone. But blurry pictures and awkward angles won't do the scenery any justice.

Luckily, there are some simple tricks you can use to take better photos on the train. Bring a small tripod to steady your camera, even when the train is moving. Use lens filters to improve the colors and reduce glare in your photos. And most importantly, focus on capturing moments that reflect how you feel, not just what you're seeing.

Final Thoughts

To sum up, traveling alone by train in the UK is a great idea. The train network is big and easy to use, so you can go almost anywhere. Trains are safe and comfortable, which makes the journey more enjoyable. Plus, you can meet new people and see beautiful scenery along the way. Train tickets are usually affordable, and you don't have to worry about driving or getting lost. So, if you're planning a solo trip in the UK, traveling by train is a fantastic option to consider!

For most, there is nothing more civilised or indeed romantic than great railway journeys. After all, what is more fun than when the journey is just as much an adventure, as thrilling and as important as the destination.

Trailblazing into inventive touring is certainly nothing new for Jules Verne. Founded in 1978 on the basis of one simple idea – to operate a train from London to Peking (Beijing) and then to Hong Kong – at a time when the 'bamboo curtain' was still officially in place.

For over 40 years, Jules Verne has been the leader in cultural escorted tours. Even our name was chosen to evoke a different era of travel, one that created events with ‘a sense of occasion’. Further innovative railway tours were to follow and in February 2019, we celebrated our 40 th  anniversary by repeating this original journey. Travelling by rail from London through Europe and the heart of Russia, across the expanse of Siberia into Mongolia before arriving into Beijing and travelling to Hong Kong, with a group of 48 intrepid Jules Verne travellers. For most, there is nothing more civilised or indeed romantic than great railway journeys. After all, what is more fun than when the journey is just as much an adventure, as thrilling and as important as the destination. What better way to admire beautiful landscapes, enjoy moments of calm reflection and experience the sophistication and nostalgia of a bygone era. Great railway journeys also provide a utilitarian function with modern high-speed trains connecting cities, countries and continents and offer a more glamorous and adventurous alternative to flying.

WHERE DO OUR GREAT RAILWAY JOURNEYS VISIT?

Wherever you wish to travel, there will be a railway holiday to suit your needs at Jules Verne. We journey far and wide to some of the world’s most famous and desirable locations, from culture-rich Asia to scenic Europe. Hop on board with a small group of travellers and a knowledgeable tour guide to start your adventure. We also offer a variety of popular railway tours through South Africa, including  A Rail Journey to Victoria Falls . While it would be easy to focus on all the luxuries found inside, the real highlight of this journey is the incredible landscapes to be found outside – which include Ruby Canyon, Mount Logan and Mount Garfield. To maximize the views, the train only runs during the day and features oversized windows and glass-domed coaches. There are also options to start or end in Salt Lake City or Las Vegas if you’d like a little time to explore these destinations.

City of New Orleans, Chicago, Illinois to New Orleans, Louisiana

Amtrak’s City of New Orleans  is a popular choice for those wishing to explore the rich history and culture of Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans. Trains typically leave the Windy City at 8pm, trundling through Illinois and Kentucky by night and gliding into Tennessee as the sun rises. Be sure to stop off in Memphis to wander through the homeland of blues, rock n’ roll and soul music, as well as paying a visit to Elvis’ former home.

After leaving Memphis, the journey continues through Mississippi and Louisiana, where you can gaze out at cypress swamps teeming with alligators and birds. Finally, it arrives in NOLA at 3.47pm. Carriage options are the same as those offered on other Amtrak sleeper services, with coach class tickets starting from around $110 and roomettes starting from $421 for solo passengers or $596 for two.

The Canadian, Vancouver to Jasper, Canada

VIA Rail’s overnight service between Vancouver and Jasper certainly doesn't scrimp on impressive scenery. What’s more, it’s a fraction of the price of the famous Rocky Mountaineer service. The 19-hour trip starts at reasonable C$156 (US$122) per passenger for a reclining seat in Economy, or C$527 (US$413) for a two-person cabin in Sleeper Class.

<p>Trains depart Vancouver at 3pm each day, gliding away from the city’s gleaming skyscrapers and towards British Columbia’s breathtaking mountains and lakes. Stopping at Kamloops just after midnight, the journey continues along through eastern BC and into Alberta (be sure to wake up early to see the Rockies at sunrise). Finally, you’ll arrive in Jasper at 11am the following day. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and crystal-clear lakes, this laid-back town is the ideal base for exploring the Rockies and Jasper National Park.</p> <p><a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/123746/canadas-most-jawdropping-views?page=1"><strong>Now discover Canada's most jaw-dropping views</strong></a></p>

<p>Many visitors flock to western Canada for its big-name national parks and hulking mountains, but the east coast is stunning in an entirely different way. Beginning at 7pm in Montréal, the journey whisks you alongside the Lac Saint-Pierre, before passing through New Brunswick by night and then onto the picturesque lakes of Nova Scotia. Finally, you’ll arrive in Halifax at 5.51pm the following day.

Seating and carriage options are the same as those offered on VIA Rail’s The Canadian, although there’s no Prestige Class option. Economy tickets start at around $107, while Sleeper Plus tickets start from $371 for a cabin for two. As for food, those in Sleeper class can enjoy a complimentary three-course meal accompanied by Canadian wines, or there’s a good selection of snacks and light meals available for Economy passengers.

Napa Valley Wine Train, Napa to St Helena, California

What could be better than drifting past emerald-green vineyards with a glass of wine in hand? Perhaps doing so on one of Napa Valley Wine Train's  unique vintage carriages, which travel on a 36-mile (58km) there-and-back trip from Downtown Napa to St Helena on an original 1864 rail line. The carriages, with their opulent velvet-upholstered seats, mahogany paneling and brass, have been sensitively restored to evoke the glamor of vintage train travel.

<p>Offering the perfect combination of history, stunning landscapes and (of course) great wine, there's a range of packages on offer, from half-a-day winery tours with tastings to on-board dining experiences and special events, like the Murder Mystery dinner theater option. As you might expect, food and wine options aboard are ultra-opulent, with most packages offering multi-course gourmet meals and complimentary private-label wines. Needless to say, all of this doesn’t come cheap – prices are only available on application. </p>

<p>Skirting through some of New Mexico’s finest scenery, the tantalizingly named <a href="https://skyrailway.com/">Sky Railway</a> is just as fantasy-filled as you’d imagine. The journey is made all the more enticing by the fact this 141-year old heritage route was recently saved by a group of rail enthusiasts (<em>Game of Thrones</em> author George RR Martin among them). Since its revival in late 2021, it’s been given a new lease of life as a family-friendly adventure trip.</p>

Sky Railway, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Skirting through some of New Mexico’s finest scenery, the tantalizingly named Sky Railway is just as fantasy-filled as you’d imagine. The journey is made all the more enticing by the fact this 141-year old heritage route was recently saved by a group of rail enthusiasts ( Game of Thrones author George RR Martin among them). Since its revival in late 2021, it’s been given a new lease of life as a family-friendly adventure trip.

There are several packages to choose from – all of which depart from and return to Santa Fe – offering a wide range of themes, from culinary experiences to an opportunity to a journey back in time to the days of the Wild West. Guests can even join a murder mystery game or board the StarGazer Express at night to take in the glorious celestial show the Galisteo Basin offers. Ticket prices start from around $59 for the 2.5-hour Santa Fe Scenic route.

Denali Star, Anchorage to Fairbanks, Alaska

Ditch the car and opt for a more climate-friendly journey through one of America’s most beautiful (and least-visited) national parks. The Alaska Railroad's flagship train  Denali Star embarks on a 12-hour ride between Anchorage and Fairbanks via Wasilla, Talkeetna and Denali. Along the 365-mile (587km) route, the train rushes past rivers and mountains and offers expansive panoramas of Hurricane Gulch from the top of a 296-foot (90.2m) bridge.

Check out Alaska's most incredible sights

Of course, you’ll want to leave longer than a day to take it all in. Passengers can usually combine their train journeys with day trips in Talkeetna, an excursion in Denali National Park or even plan a multi-day itinerary with overnight stays along the way. In addition to the standard stops, the train will provide a service between Talkeetna and Hurricane. Trains run between May and September each year and tickets start at $259 for the full distance.

Copper Canyon train, Los Mochis to Chihuahua City, Mexico

This nine-hour trip between Los Mochis, Sinaloa and Chihuahua City, Chihuahua, has rightly gained a reputation as one of the most epic rail journeys in the world. The famous Copper Canyon through which it travels is nothing short of magical: think dramatic gorges, towering peaks and historic colonial towns. It’s possible to travel in both directions, but we’d advise setting off from Los Mochis so you get to see the most stunning scenery (much of which is at the beginning of the route) before the sun sets.

There are two providers which offer trains through the Copper Canyon – the Chepe Regional and the Chepe Express – but the latter is significantly quicker and more luxurious. There are departures from Los Mochis on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with one-way tickets starting at $123.

Mount Washington Cog Railway, Mount Washington, New Hampshire

Dubbed “the first mountain-climbing cog railway in the world”, this one-of-a-kind route traverses the steep summit of Mount Washington, reaching a 37% gradient at certain points. Located in the gorgeous Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, in the heart of the White Mountains, the National Historic Engineering Landmark is certainly a fun way to discover rural New England.

Although it’s only a 3.5-mile (5.6km) journey, the train chugs by at a leisurely pace and plenty of time is allowed for soaking in the 360-degree views at the top, so the round trip takes around three hours. If the weather’s clear, travelers can see five states from this vantage point, as well as Canada and the Atlantic Ocean. Tickets start at around $99 per person, with two daily departures at 8.30am and 3pm from May to October.

Georgetown Loop Railroad, Georgetown to Silver Plume, Colorado

Want to travel across this terrifying-looking railroad? While we admit the aptly named Devil's Gate High Bridge, which features a 100-foot (30m) drop over Clear Creek, isn’t for the faint-hearted, this thrilling experience is at the top of many rail buffs’ wish lists. It’s no surprise that when it was completed back in 1884, this circular railroad connecting Georgetown and Silver Plume was seen as an engineering marvel and attracted visitors from all over.

Today, Georgetown Loop Railroad’s legendary status endures. Between May and October, there are at least three daily departures from Devil’s Gate Depot, as well as select weekend departures from Silver Plume, costing $30.95 for adults and $24.95 for kids. You can also book a walking tour of the nearby Lebanon Silver Mine, learning about Georgetown’s long standing connection with the precious metal (it was formerly known as 'The Silver Queen of the Rockies').

Grand Canyon Railway, Williams to Grand Canyon Village, Arizona

It’s been a favorite road trip destination for decades, but you might not have thought to visit the Grand Canyon by rail. Yet this underrated (and surprisingly affordable) excursion has to be one of the most beautiful train journeys on the planet. Beginning in Williams, a small town 30 miles (48km) west of Flagstaff, Grand Canyon Railway meanders through ponderosa pine forests and open prairie, stopping at Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim before heading back to Williams.

As scenic trips go, it’s a steal. One-way fares in Pullman Class start from just $33.50, Coach Class (pictured) is $41 each way, or to take in the scenery in style you can travel in a glass-ceiling observation dome car from $94.50 each way. During the journey, passengers are encouraged to get into the spirit of the Old West and enjoy the musical entertainment, cowboy characters and other surprises onboard.

Jose Cuervo Express, Guadalajara to Tequila, Mexico

Tequila fans need look no further: we’ve found the perfect train for you. Traveling the 11-hour journey between Guadalajara and the town of Tequila, the Jose Cuervo Express allows you to taste a wide variety of tequilas while whizzing past endless agave fields, all in a highly luxurious setting. Along the way, guests will also tour a distillery to discover how the spirit is made, wander the historic streets of Tequila and see an agave harvesting demonstration.

<p>Trains depart from Guadalajara every Saturday and passengers can choose between four carriages: Express, Premium Plus, Diamond or Elite (pictured). On this luxury option, enjoy a large adults-only lounge and open bar providing a range of tequila cocktails, with decor inspired by the old-school glamor of the Orient Express. Tickets start at around $128. </p> <p><a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/121327/the-worlds-most-luxurious-train-journeys?page=1"><strong>These are the world's most luxurious train journeys</strong></a></p>
