South Africa Tours & Vacations

Silhouette of African safari scene with giraffe, elephant, rhino, and vehicle at sunset

The whole ‘country of contrasts’ thing has become a bit of a cliche

But what else do you call a place where (in a three-week period) you could happily slalom between penguins waddling on the Cape and lions stalking the bushveld, cinematic coastal switchbacks and burnt Kalahari sand, the oldest wine industry outside   Europe   and cutting-edge fusion cuisine? ‘Contrast’, doesn’t really do South Africa justice. The beauty of a South Africa tour (besides the peace of mind that comes with an expert local guide) is being able to fit so much   Africa   into so little time. From the Stellenbosch winelands to Kruger , Blyde River and beyond, this is a place where you can take your   safari   with a side of espresso.

Best time to visit south africa.

South Africa is an excellent year-round destination. Winters are mild, dry and good for wildlife viewing. Summers can get very hot and humid but are a great time for visiting beaches and festivals. Spring is a great time for viewing wildflowers in the Northern and Western Cape provinces, and very little rain falls anywhere in autumn, but the days are warm and the nights cool. Overall, there’s always a good time to head to South Africa.

Culture and customs

South Africa’s culture is one of the most diverse in the world. From indigenous tribes like the Zulu, San Bushmen and Xhosa to the Afrikaners of Dutch heritage, and immigrants of British descent, visitors will be able to experience a magnificent melting pot of customs and traditions. The significant Indian and Jewish populations also add to the ethnic mix. From the proud, beaded Zulu warriors that have inhabited the land for centuries to newly arrived immigrants from   Europe   and   Asia , South Africa’s culture has been shaped by millions of people.

The cuisine is generally a combination of Indian, Dutch, English and tribal flavors and techniques, while dress can range from modern fashion in the big cities to simple traditional, tribal dress in the bush. Although South Africa has made significant inroads towards peace and reconciliation since the end of apartheid, racial tensions are sometimes evident, and it is generally best not to contribute to this in any way. Overall, most travelers will find South Africans to be welcoming, appreciative of your visit and ready to share their homeland and stories.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Foods to try in South Africa

South Africa is fast becoming one of the most interesting wine producing regions in the world. Quality has risen steeply in the past decade so if you’re visiting the Stellenbosch Wine Region, be sure to sample some fine reds, which are world-class.

With such easy access to the Indian Ocean and Southern Atlantic, South Africa boasts some of the best seafood dining experiences you’ll ever have. From an indulgent oyster platter at a Cape Town restaurant to a spicy seafood curry in Durban, the seafood here is fresh, cheap and flavorsome.

Biltong tends to divide people. Some find this preserved, spiced meat snack impossible to refuse and others simply can’t stomach it. Either way, it’s extremely popular and readily available in markets, supermarkets and shops throughout South Africa.

4. Boerewors

Another one for the meat-lovers, this coiled, spicy sausage is a South African delicacy best done on the barbecue. Flavored with coriander, cloves and nutmeg, this is a meat born from South African and Dutch traditions.

Geography and environment

South Africa showcases one of the most diverse and stunning natural environments in the world. Visitors are able to soak up golden rays on sun-drenched beaches, journey through acre upon acre of dry savannah, admire lush, green meadows, walk through tropical forest and stop to take in views of wide, ancient canyons. It’s also possible to stroll the streets of an urban city one day and meander along a dirt track passing small farms and villages the next. South Africa truly is a land of contrasts, and this begins with the landscapes and environment.

Located on the tip of Southern Africa, South Africa shares land borders with Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland. It also shares a long stretch of coastline with the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans. The topography of the land changes remarkably around the country, from the lofty plateaus of the inland region to the low-lying coast and mountainous ranges of the Cape. This variance in topography makes South Africa rich in many species of flora and fauna, something that attracts many tourists and travelers from all over the world.

History and government

Early history.

The land of South Africa has been inhabited for centuries by tribes hailing from different areas of the African continent, including the San and Bantu people. Most tribes relied on hunting and gathering, but gradually were introduced to agriculture and animal husbandry over the years. From around 1200 AD, the tribal people of South Africa started to become influenced by outsiders, including Muslim traders, the Portuguese and the Dutch, who established a settlement in the mid 1600s.

The Dutch continued to dominate the country until the 1800s, when the British became interested in the Cape Colony. During this time, the native population had become increasingly dissatisfied with being marginalized and treated poorly by their European colonizers. Many native people were used as slaves on plantations and were treated brutally by their ‘employers’ and many resented losing their land, culture and traditional way of life. Further to this, the Dutch descendants (known as Boers) didn’t appreciate the arrival of the British in a territory they had inhabited for years before their arrival. This frustration and anger regularly resulted in confrontation and armed conflict between the British, Boers and Zulus, culminating in a series of wars – most notably the Boer Wars.

Recent history

More recently, South Africa has managed to overcome the Apartheid era, a time where discrimination of black people was legalized. Until 1994, black people were unable to legally own land or vote in elections. Further to this, education, healthcare, beaches and public places like cinemas were segregated. During this time, South Africa was ruled and controlled by the white minority, much to the dissatisfaction of the black population and ultimately, the world. After much international pressure and many attempts at reform, the Apartheid era was finally ended in 1994, with Nelson Mandela stepping up to lead the nation as President. Due to this challenging history, modern day South Africa has many social issues to work on and resolve, but many of its people are filled with hope and optimism. In 2010, South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup, much to the delight of its citizens and the world.

2. Township art

Festivals and events

Cape Town Jazz Festival

Cape Town shines with two days of hot jazz performances from African entertainers at this very popular festival. Although many of the shows sell out well in advance, the free outdoor concert ensures no one misses out.

Knysna Oyster Festival

This annual festival held over 10 days in winter offers so much more than oysters. Sure, indulge in some oysters but don’t forget about the fun runs, marathons, wine tastings, eating competitions, live music and cooking demos.

South Africa ms1

Cape Town is the second most populated city in South Africa. It’s known for its landscapes, gardens, museums, cuisine and wine, but most importantly, it’s known for its wildlife. South Africa is a great place to see the Big Five: elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions and buffalo, as well as many species of snakes, birds and even eight different species of whales.

South Africa ms2

Referred to as “The Place of the Mountain” this Big 5 reserve also has five eco-systems. It has a moderate climate year round with rainfall in summer. The area is malaria-free and has an upper area with rock formations and grass plains, and a lower area of vegetation and wetlands.

Hanglip Mountain Lodge:

There’s never a dull moment at Hanglip Mountain Lodge! The luxury suites here are a great blend of romantic African and African baroque. There are ten luxury bedrooms, spa facilities, dining room and lounge, bar facilities, wine cellar, swimming pool, and the Hanglip fig tree outdoor venue. Every room has a private deck with views of the mountain and lounge areas with welcoming fireplaces. There are also game drives, bush walks, horseback safaris, helicopter flights, paintball; abseiling, and quad bikes.

Kruger National Park:

Imagine yourself exploring almost five million acres of protected game reserve spread out on the plains of South Africa. Here you can see the Big 5: elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards and rhinos running free out in their natural habitat. But wait! There are more than three hundred types of trees and five hundred species of birds to admire, too!

Located on the Knysna lagoon, there is much to see in the Featherbed Nature Reserve. You can explore the reserve riding on a 4x4 vehicle and trailer that takes visitors to key viewpoints on the reserve, or you can explore an ancient sea cave. Milk trees are extremely common here and they can grow up to six feet tall and have a spiny shrub-like look with small yellow flowers along the side.

Boulders Beach:

Feel the sea breeze in your hair and the sand between your toes at Boulder’s Beach in False Bay. Aside from being a beautiful spot to lounge, swim, and picnic, it’s also the only place in the world where you can observe African Penguins in their natural habitat. A colony of these adorably furry endangered birds settled at the beach in 1982 and never left. You’ll probably want to stay a while too.

What We Are

south africa travel company

A Tour Operator

The mainstay of our services is private guided tours in South Africa and Namibia. We will conduct your tour experiences on the ground in Southern Africa. Our tours are all private and operated solely for the party reserving the service.

Small and Knowledgeable

The modest size of our company and the experience of the individuals employed means attention to detail and very personal service. You are not just another 'number' to African Sky.

Provider of quality services

Whether personal or exclusive top-end, our services are exceptional; glance through our client testimonials to affirm our quality safaris, tours, and honeymoons.

Committed to our clients

The entire African Sky team is committed to ensuring that your travels to our part of the world are unforgettable. You're in our attentive care from the moment you step off the plane.

What We Are Not

south africa travel company

A Travel Agent

We are not an agent who has never set foot in Africa and rely on second-hand accounts of hotels, lodges, and local conditions. Conditions on the ground when advising clients.

Large and impersonal

We love getting to know our clients and ensuring that their travels complement their particular needs. Our service is very personal. You will be dealing with individuals, not a faceless corporation.

Reseller of others' tours

We do not sell tours for other companies - we only sell our private tours. If you are an agent, however, you are welcome to reach out to us to assist you in creating an itinerary for your prospective clients.

A travel directory

While we list various accommodations and offer useful information on travel in Southern Africa, this is all in lieu of our primary function - offering the best safaris, honeymoons, and tours to discerning travelers.

Why Book With Us?

When booking a safari or tour with African Sky, you secure the operator's services handling all your on-the-ground operations - not a third-party operator. We are based in South Africa and share the inherent knowledge and years of experience that only locals can offer.

Knowledge & Experience

As a company, we have more than twenty-four years of experience. As individuals, however, we have spent many more years exploring the length and breadth of southern Africa to provide only the best advice regarding a southern African travel experience.

Commitment to Clients

At African Sky, you are more than just a client. We are passionate about our slice of paradise and sharing it with all who travel to Southern Africa. We will go out of our way to ensure that the experience exceeds your expectations and makes you want to return for more adventures with us.

Flexibility

Our flexibility is one of our proudest characteristics. This trademark extends from our tailor-made itineraries to our on-the-ground operations. When traveling with African Sky, you can have a flexible schedule with no limited time window at any particular attraction. Sit back, take your time and enjoy the scenery.

Sales, Admin and Systems Team

The African Sky Sales, Admin, and Systems Team creates and maintains our online offerings and systems required to manage the services we conduct effectively. They design itineraries that meet each traveling party's specific needs and manage the logistical arrangements of all safaris & and tours to the highest standard. Each team member has many years of experience and is passionate about ensuring your holiday in our part of the world is the most unique and memorable experience it can be.

Garden Route & Addo Group Adventure - 6 Days Tour

  • Christmas & New Year

Garden Route & Addo Group Adventure - 6 Days

Super Tour Guide, he was very nice and gave us lots of info about all sorts of things and place we saw. The tour itself was great with fun activities. The hostels were much better than expected (even the cheapest backpacker option was really nice) There are only 2 things that could in my opinion be improved. 1. It's very nice that our guide offered to drive us truly everywhere. But when you are being driven less than 100m from the lobby/restaurant of a hostel to your little hut ... Well at some point it just becomes too much and myself and a few others had to ask to be allowed to walk. 2. More "physically demanding" activities. As one naturally spends a lot of time sitting in the car driving from place to place it would be much better to have more action. (Yes we had Kanus and a hike on one day but the first was a short drive along an extremely calm river and the later more like a 30 min stroll on even terrain). Granted not everyone would like to do/want to participate in more exhausting activities but there are simple ways to get around that problem. (E.g. splitting up the group with some perusing a more leisurely activity while the others get a chance to spend some energy. This trip even had a good example of this when at Cape Aguhlas there was the option to ride a bike to the Cape or to follow 30min later by car)

This was a trip of a lifetime that exceeded our expectations! The animal Interactions were even more exciting than anticipated. The accommodations and food were excellent and our CEO, Gavin was tremendous. The itinerary was seemless, we had fun together as a group. Gavin was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and kind. He had good connections with people at each stop and everything was very well planned and scheduled. As for going above and beyond, I bought a painting from a local artist and at another stop where there was a gift store, Gavin got me some bubble wrap so I could get my painting home safely. It was a wonderful adventure!

An experience I will never forget! I was lucky enough to see the Big 5 which was incredible. The itinerary is very well put together so I felt like I experienced Kruger to the fullest. I stayed in one of the chalets which was basic but very comfortable. Every meal was delicious with variety for vegetarians.

Beyond expectations. Tour was flawless from the airport connections to the backpackers lodges. Our guide Wendy with earthstompers was superb. Mariska was extremely helpful with tourradar and Nicolene was equally as well with travel encounters. They arranged our side trips for shark cage diving and skydiving as well without having any issues whatsoever. I would highly recommend this your to anyone. Reviews of Small Group tours to South Africa

With Gareth we had a great, well organized short week, too short but ful of information, entertainment, fun.
This tour was one of the greatest travel experiences I've ever had. Our CEO Alfred Dovey led the way throughout South Africa with such care and knowledge about everything we did while providing clear direction of what each plan of the day was and where we needed to be. I feel was was able to see, learn and experience South Africa in a way I could have never done on my own. I highly recommend this G Adventure tour.

Travel to Namibia to discover a desert wonderland, its wild heart beating in time with nature. One of Africa’s most enigmatic countries, both desolate and beautiful, its plains beckon those keen to capture its soul. Whether you’re visiting for a bucket list experience, a romantic escape or just wishing to conquer its magic, there’s something for everyone on a Namibia holiday.

Sun City v2

South Africa's flagship holiday resort, Sun City is an entertainment mecca just 2 hours’ drive from Johannesburg. With attractions that include a casino, man-made beach, championship golf courses, a safari park and more, it’s no surprise that a Sun City package is a favourite destination for families, couples and groups of friends. Just because the North West is a landlocked province, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a beach day! One of the biggest attractions in Sun City is the Valley of Waves with its own artificial beach. Here you can enjoy numerous thrills and even surf the waves in the Roaring Lagoon.

LUXURY HOLIDAYS & TOURS

South africa, the rainbow nation.

The Rainbow Nation offers a kaleidoscope of experiences. From award-winning vineyards to world-class safaris, from a desert to the Garden Route, from sandy beaches to towering mountains. Start planning your luxury holiday to South Africa today. So, where do you start arranging your South African holiday?

Exciting wildlife encounters are to be had in the Kruger – the best-stocked game reserve in Africa – and self-drives to enjoy along the iconic Garden Route. There’s KwaZulu-Natal, where you can hear local guides recount the dramatic battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift and the extraordinary, water-carved potholes of Bourke’s Luck.

You could tour any number of world class wineries; climb Table Mountain; travel through a rolling, flowering desert; or stand on the edge of one of the world’s largest man-made holes. But maybe you’d prefer to go surfing and shark diving from fabulous beaches, or spend some time bargaining in the bustling Indian markets of Durban.

Speak to one of our South Africa specialists about a tailor-made holiday and you could even find yourself standing on the southernmost tip of the continent at Cape Agulhas, watching the mighty Atlantic and Indian oceans collide. With 21 national parks, eight World Heritage Sites and 1,600 miles of pristine coastline to explore, we will use our experience and expertise to ensure your holiday is just right.

World Travel Market Africa 2024 opens in South Africa's Cape Town

CAPE TOWN, April 10 (Xinhua) -- World Travel Market (WTM) Africa 2024 kicked off Wednesday in Cape Town, the legislative capital of South Africa, bringing together prominent global figures in the travel and tourism industry for pioneering discussions and business opportunities in the tourism sector.

The 10th edition of the leading travel and tourism exposition in Africa, which is being held from Wednesday to Friday at the Cape Town International Conference Center, highlights the region's tourism offerings through a series of shows, conferences, and awards ceremonies.

With more than 9,500 pre-scheduled meetings and exceedingly 7,000 delegates from over 100 countries, WTM Africa gathers tourism industry professionals, including exhibitors, buyers, and media, for three days of trade, networking, and deal-making.

As part of the Africa Travel Week 2024, running from April 7 to 12 in Cape Town, the event has a content program designed to promote industry knowledge, foster connections, and promote business growth, according to the organizers. It also provides airlines, cruise companies, hotels, and travel agents with an opportunity to showcase their high-end offerings to a global audience.

Megan De Jager, portfolio director for travel, tourism and marketing at RX Africa, which is one of the event's organizers, said WTM Africa also stands as a platform where attendees can generate sales leads, launch new products, and raise brand awareness.

"WTM Africa is the place where the B2B tourism companies' journey takes them into markets to conduct industry research and size up their competition while forging new relationships and maintaining current ones," De Jager said.

Since 2014, WTM Africa has hosted more than 18,000 exhibitors and created over 17,000 jobs, according to the official website of the City of Cape Town.

Alderman JP Smith, the City of Cape Town's mayoral committee member for safety and security, said WTM Africa is a highlight on the event calendar for Cape Town. He noted that WTM Africa has shown year-on-year growth in the number of visitors to the city for these events and their impact on the economy.

"We have demonstrated our commitment to this expansion by approving a three-year agreement to support Africa Travel Week until 2025. We are looking forward to welcoming all the visiting delegates to our city and sharing with them what Cape Town has to offer," he said.

Cape Town International hits 10 million passengers per year mark

Cape Airport.jpg

Airports Company South Africa has announced that Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) processed over 10 million passengers in the 2023/2024 financial year, a new record. This milestone was reached by handling the highest number of international and regional passengers since the COVID-19 pandemic, exceeding 320,000 passengers in March 2024 alone.

ACSA's regional general manager Mark Maclean expressed enthusiasm over the airport's remarkable performance, citing a steady increase in passenger volumes and a resurgence in activity during the peak season. To accommodate this growth, CTIA is enhancing its infrastructure and facilities, including plans for a new runway, terminal upgrades and refurbishments.

While the expansion process will take time, Maclean thanked passengers for their continued support as the airport invests to further elevate the passenger experience and enable CTIA's continued growth.
