Spiti Valley Itinerary (& Circuit Road Trip) from Shimla

Azure waters of Chandratal Lake

Spiti Valley is a cold mountain desert located in the rain shadow region of the Greater Himalayan ranges . It is snuggled in the north-eastern part of Himachal Pradesh.

Proceeding in counterclockwise fashion from Chandigarh, roadway (NH5) of Spiti valley circuit route passes through Solan, Shimla, Narkanda, Rampur Bushahr, Sarahan, Chitkul , Nako, Tabo and Kaza.

The closing line of Spiti circuit traverses along the Spiti river and meets Manali town after it passes through the Atal tunnel or Rohtang pass.

The valley is bounded by the districts of Kinnaur in the south-east, Kullu in the south, and the valleys of Zanskar and Union Territory of Ladakh in the north. In the east, Spiti shares its boundary with Tibet (China).

The name Spiti or Piti — as it is known among the locals— means ‘The Middle Land’ that is the land between India and Tibet.

Why take Shimla-Kaza-Manali route for Spiti Valley Road Trip?

There are two road routes to reach Spiti valley, but we recommend the Shimla-Kaza route because:

  • Manali to Solang valley and Atal tunnel (north portal) road stretch gets busy during peak summer season (i.e. June-August). You may get stuck in a traffic jam.
  • Gramphu to Batal Road is riddled with waterfalls, glacial water melts streams, and water crossings. It is easier and more convenient to drive through this part of the road from Kaza side.
  • There is a gradual increase in altitude (barring Narkanda-Rampur Road segment) when driving on the Shimla-Kaza route. This gradual rise in altitude is good for acclimatization. Especially for people coming from the plains.

What Does It Cost?

All-inclusive price of Spiti valley tour starts from 25,500 INR. The final price will be determined by variables like:

  • Vehicle (4WD SUV or standard)
  • The level of comfort (during stays) you expect.
  • Group size.
  • Pick-up location (Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla or Manali)
  • Departure date (pre-monsoon in June or post-monsoon in September or October)
  • Add-ons availed such as driver, camping gear and guide, and drop location (Shimla, Manali, Chandigarh, or Delhi) etc.

To get the Spiti valley circuit tour cost details, please let us know the following details:

  • The group size
  • Arrival city (Chandigarh/ Shimla/Manali), and tour type (standard/premium) etc.
  • Planned month and day of visit
  • Number of days in itinerary
  • Mode of transportation i.e. 4WD SUV / Sedan / Hatchback car.

Spiti valley and upper Kinnaur is a remote region with high-altitude rugged and difficult terrain. Expect stunning and spectacularly beautiful vales with dreamy vistas instead of fancy hotels or road tracks similar to F1 grand prix circuits.

View of Garhwal Himalayas from Narkanda

Narkanda is a small town in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. It is located at an altitude of 2750 meters on the Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH 05). Surrounded by the forest Kinnaur – Garhwal Himalayan Range. The experience of a panormic view from the Hatu top is not to be missed.

Padam Palace, Rampur Bushahr

Garden abutting Padam Palace, Rampur Bushahr

The palace of erstwhile Bushahr princely state is built in neo-gothic architecture. Built between 1919 and 1925 for the Raja of Bushehr, the main building is still private, but one section is now the Nau Nabh Hotel, and the garden is open to visitors. From here you can admire the facade’s stone arches, carved-wood upper storey, peaked gables, and turreted towers. In front is a remarkable multi-gabled bandstand carved with peacock figures.

Sarahan temple landscape view

Sarahan is a small village near Jeori town. It is the site of the Bhimakali Temple, dedicated to the goddess Bhimakali, the presiding deity of the rulers of the former Bushahr State. The temple is situated about 170 kilometers from Shimla and 12 kilometers from Jeori town.

Sarahan Pheasantry

Also known as Jajurana Bird Sanctuary, this park is worth a visit. It hosts Jajurana, the state bird of Himachal Pradesh and a few other rare birds. Please note that the sanctuary remains closed from July to September for bird mating season. If you are traveling in any month apart from these three, a visit is highly recommended.

Baspa valley of Kinnaur

Chitkul landscape! The baspa valley, Kinnaur

Bordering along western Himalaya with Tibet and Garhwal, the Baspa valley of Kinnaur has been open to visitors since the early nineties. The valley got its name from the Baspa river which originates from Chung Sakhago pass and meanders for around 30 km before meeting Satluj on its left bank near Karcham. Unlike the Spiti valley and Hangrang region of Kinnaur, the Baspa valley is a green paradise in largely barren mountains.

Kamru fort, Baspa valley - Kinnaur

Baspa valley or Sangla valley is known for fruit-laden orchards, cedar-covered slopes and flower crusted meadows. Bhojpatra tree is abundantly found in the Chitkul region. A land of blue skies, buzzing Baspa river, soaring peaks, deep valleys, apple orchards, and syncretic culture — Baspa valley a place for people who are seeking genuine peace and soul-calming solitude far, far from the madding crowd. The fort of Kamru is another landmark in Baspa valley.

Strolling by the Baspa river

Chitkul, Rackcham, Sangla, Kamru and Chansu villages should be on your bucket list if you are visiting Kinnaur for the first time.

Kalpa Village

Kalpa village Kinnaur

A small village about 10 kilometers from district headquarters Reckong Peo, known for the magnificent view of Kinner Kailash peaks . The focal point is Chini village and surrounding places like Kalpa Narayanas temple and Buddhist monastery.

Kalpa from above | Kinnaur

Kalpa will probably be the last town where your phone will work flawlessly, no matter which network you are on. As you cross Kalpa and continue towards Pooh, your phone services will be a come and go before it completely dies. Only the BSNL network works in the Spiti & Lahaul valley.

Reo Purgyil peak view

spiti valley tour packages from shimla

At an altitude of 6816m, it is the highest peak of the state of Himachal Pradesh . You can get a good view of the peak from Khab Bridge if the weather is clear. If not from Khab Bridge, you will have to go up to Namgia or Tashigang village to get a clear view. Nako Village is located on the slopes of this mountain.

Nako Lake And Monastery

Nako Lake, Kinnaur

A small man-made lake in the village of Nako. It is not much to look at during the daytime but try some photography around the lake at either dusk or dawn and you will be able to get some good shots. Nako Monastery is an 11th-century ancient monastery located in the village of Nako . It was built by Buddhist Mahaguru Rinchen Zangpo who translated many Sanskrit Buddhist texts into Tibetan. He founded around 100 monasteries in western Tibet including Tabo monastery.

Tabo Monastery

Tabo monastery gate

Tabo Monastery: An ancient monastery believed to be over a thousand years old and one of the holiest. Founded in 996 AD it is also known as Ajanta of the Himalayas . Many priceless collections of scroll paintings, manuscripts, well-preserved statues, frescoes, and extensive murals can be found here.

Dhankar Monastery

Dhankar Monastery

Also known as Dhangkar Gompa, it is an ancient monastery built on a 1000 foot high cliff overlooking the confluence of Spiti and Pin Rivers. Apart from its heritage, this monastery is also famous for its spectacular setting. “Dhang” means cliff and “Kar” means fort, hence the literal name of the place is “Fort on a cliff”.

Key Monastery

Spiti river meandering through the Spiti valley. The Key monastery.

Also known as Kye or Ki Gompa, it is one of the largest monasteries in Spiti valley that also serves as a training center for Lamas. It is believed to be over a thousand years old and has a vast collection of ancient murals and books.

Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary

It was established in 1992, Kibber is India’s only wildlife sanctuary in cold desert and is home to several rare animals like Ibex, Blue Sheep, Red Fox, Tibetan woolly hare, Himalayan wolf, lynx, pika, Tibetan wild ass.

Kunzum Pass

Your first high altitude pass of the journey, unless you have somehow managed to climb up to Shipki La in which case Kunzum will be your second. Connecting the valleys of Lahaul and Spiti, this pass is at an elevation of 4,590 meters, higher than Rohtang La. It remains closed from late October until early June.

Chandratal Lake

A beautiful lake is also the source of the river Chandrabhaga . If you can manage to be around here after sunset, it is a perfect place for capturing some magnificent sky and milky way pictures.

Azure waters of Chandratal Lake

This small lake is one of the key highlights of the journey to Spiti valley and a perfect camping spot. There is also a legend associated with this lake. The confluence of the “moon-born” Chandra and the “sun-born” Bhaga takes place at Tandi, where the fabled Chandrabhaga or Chenab River comes into being.

Interestingly enough, Wikipedia article refer this lake as Tso Chigma . Tso is a Tibetan / Bhoti word which translates to lake, but there is no reference of Chigma either in Tibetan or Bhoti language. A lake is referred to as Dhar in Spiti vernacular language.

The mighty Rohtang pass, the spot where you will cross over to Manali and finish your Spiti journey. The name of this pass literally means “a pile of corpses” which I believe attributes to the fact that a lot of people died while crossing it in ancient times. Expect to find snow at the top no matter which month you are traveling in. The vistas around from the top of the pass and even on the ascent/descent are quite breathtaking.

Palari (or Balari top) is one and hour hour hike away from Demul village. From this vantage point, one can see about 15 (including Demul) villages of Spiti valley.

Hit the road on our epic overland journey spanning over ~1200 km, as you traverse seven picturesque districts and explore some of the most sought-after hill stations in Himachal Pradesh. Before venturing into the hidden gems of Spiti valley and Kinnaur, this adventure will take you through breathtaking hill towns like Narkanda, Sarahan, Kalpa. Discover the untamed wilderness of vales like Pin, Hangrang, and Tidong, and marvel at the incredible engineering feat that is the Atal Tunnel. This is an experience of a lifetime, offering a perfect mix of Himalayan beauty, tribal cultural experiences, and adrenaline-pumping road adventure on the old Hindustan-Tibet highway.

BSNL works in all regions of Spiti valley and Kinnaur. Reliance Jio has started expanding its network in Spiti valley. It is expected to get functional by the summer of 2021.

In summers, the maximum temperature crosses the 20 degrees Celsius mark in Spiti valley. During sunny daytime, you’ll feel comfortable just by wearing a t-shirt and trousers. It is always good to get wrapped in layers of clothes, as the weather can change anytime in the Himalayas. Even if the sun starts shining again, you can always get rid of the outer layers of clothing.  Here is the packing list (summers) for Spiti valley:  T-shirts.  A windcheater/ rain jacket. Jeans/trousers.  Light woolen.  A cap/hat.  Sunglasses.  A pair of hiking shoes.  3/4 pairs of regular socks.  A water purifier and filtration bottle (avoid plastic bottle).  Personal hygiene essentials.  Sunscreen sunblock cream. Spiti valley packing list (for winters):  A pair of good quality waterproof trekking boots. Three pairs of cotton socks. Two pairs of waterproof hiking pants. One pair of shorts Two pairs of fleece jumpers.  Two pairs of thermal tops and bottoms One down jacket. Headgear (1 beanie/skull cap, 1 buff, and 1 trekking cap).  A pair of thick gloves Personal hygiene essentials(alcohol-based gel hand sanitizer, soap, towels, toilet papers, baby wipes, etc.).  UV-block sunglasses. First aid kit. A water purifier and filtration bottle.

Spiti valley is acclaimed for its distinctive Moon-esque landscapes and interesting landforms. 5 entities that define the Spiti valley are:  Chandratal — .the lake of moon.   Buddhist monasteries of Ki, Kaza, Kungri, and Tabo.  Snow leopards of Kibber — the grey ghost of the Himalayas. Fascinating Tibetan culture and customs.  Fossils — dating back to the Triassic period (252-201 million years ago) — of  Langza village.

Shimla to Narkanda-Rampur Bushahr-Powari-Pooh-Dubling village drive is on National Highway 5 (NH5). The Dubling village to Nako-Tabo-Kaza drive is on NH505. Kaza is the headquarters of Spiti valley. During winters, Shimla-Narkanda-Rampur road gets closed for a day or two whenever there is a long spell of snowfall. During such events, take the Shimla-Suni-Rampur Bushahr route along the Satluj river. This route stays open for all 365 days of the year. It takes longer — when compared from Manali to Spiti valley (Via Atal tunnel) route — to reach Kaza from Shimla. Shimla is one of the two places (second is Manali town) to start the Spiti valley circuit tour .

The road from Manali follows the Solang Valley-Atal tunnel-Gramphu-Batal-Kunzum Pass-Losar-Kaza route. The distance from Manali to Kaza is 183 km, and it takes about 6-7 hours (at one go) to reach Kaza. Manali-Kaza is a shorter route than the Shimla-Kaza route.  Though the Atal Tunnel has hardly reduced the road distance between Manali and Spiti valley by nearly 20 km, the drive time between the two places has now been reduced by over 2 hours. Manali town is one of the two — the second is Shimla — places to start the Spiti valley circuit tour .

You need to follow Ambala-Zirakpur Expressway on National Highway(NH) 44 and Zirakpur to Shimla (111 km) on NH5 in Himachal Pradesh. Shimla to Narkanda-Rampur Bushahr-Powari-Pooh-Dubling village drive is on NH5. Dubling village to Nako-Tabo-Kaza drive is on NH505. Kaza is the headquarter of Spiti valley.

Yes. The circuit is doable in October, though, the weather gets highly erratic — after September — in high altitude regions of Kinnaur, Spiti valley and Lahaul valley.

No. The Manali-Spiti route gets closed when thick layers of snow blankets the Kunzum pass in November/December. The traffic movement resumes only after March month.

Though the Manali to Spiti valley route gets closed — most often after November/early December till March — during winters, the Shimla-Narkanda-Rampur-Nako-Kaza road stays open even during wintertime. During long spells of snowfall, Shimla-Kaza road may get closed for a day or two. BRO team from Project Deepak and local administration employs dozers, snow cutters, and excavators to clear the snow and reopen the route after a spell of snow in the route. spiti valley tour packages from shimla

Spiti Valley in the northeastern part of Himachal Pradesh is a cold desert mountain valley and is the land between Tibet and India. One of India’s coldest places, Spiti derives its popularity from its snow-covered mountains, heavy snowfall, trekking trails and monasteries. Holidify’s wide range of Spiti Valley tour packages are perfect for when you’re looking to plan a trip with friends or family. Spiti is well known for its Buddhist culture and is home to several monasteries like the Key Monastery, Dhankar Monastery, Kungri Monastery and Tabo Monastery. You would also find the Trilokinath Temple here. The crescent-shaped Chandratal Lake is a breathtaking sight and is a must-visit attraction in Spiti Valley, along with Suraj Tal.

Places to Visit in Spiti

Chandratal Lake: Chandratal Lake is often referred to as one of the most beautiful lakes located at an altitude of about 4300 m in the mighty Himalayas. This lake is also one of two high-altitude wetlands of India that have been designated as Ramsar sites. It is believed that the Chandratal Lake lies in the vicinity of a place from where God Indra's chariot picked up Yudhishthira, the eldest of Pandava brothers in Mahabharata. The colour of the water of this holy lake keeps changing from reddish to orange to blue to emerald green as the day ends.  Key Monastery: The Key Monastery is a famous Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Lahaul and Spiti District. Also known as the Kye Monastery and Ki Monastery, it is over a thousand years old and is also the largest monastery to be found in the entire Spiti Valley. The monastery enshrines Buddha idols in the Dhyana position and has a collection of ancient books and murals. Suraj Tal: Suraj Tal Lake is considered as the 3rd largest lake in India. Due to the belief that a dip in the Suraj Tal lake cleanses a person of his sins, it attracts a lot of people and is therefore considered spiritual. However, the major reason that the lake has gained popularity is that it comes en-route to the famous Manali-Leh path that is popular for trekking and biking trips, that also encompasses the Baralacha-La Pass on the way.  Baralacha La: The Baralacha La, also known as the Baralacha Pass, is a high mountain pass that is located at the height of 16,040 feet above the sea level. This 8 kilometres long pass connects the Lahaul district in Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir and is located along the Leh-Manali highway. People who visit this pass also love to enjoy the trek from the Baralacha up to the Chandratal. The scenery and views here are breathtaking, and the barren land without any hotels and shops looks stunning.  Dhankar Monastery: Dhankar Monastery, also referred to as Dankhar, Drangkhar or Dhangkar Gompa, is perched unbelievably on the edge of a cliff and offers a panoramic view of Spiti valley. Built one thousand years ago on a 1000 feet high mountain and overlooking the heart-stirring sight of the confluence of Spiti and Pin rivers, Dhankar Monastery is listed as one of the world's 100 most endangered monuments.  Kibber: Kibber, also known as Kyibar, is a small village located in the Spiti Valley. Surrounded by picturesque mountains and barren landscapes, Kibber boasts of being the highest village with a motorable road. The village is particularly famous for the local monastery and Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary. One can spend a day at the rest houses here, with the mountains watching over.  Tabo Monastery: The Tabo Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries located in the Tabo Village of Spiti Valley. In fact, it is the oldest monastery in India and the Himalayas that has been functioning continuously since its inception. This alluring monastery is renowned as the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas'. This is because the walls of the monastery are decorated with fascinating murals and ancient paintings, much like the Ajanta Caves in Maharashtra. Pin Valley National Park: The Pin Valley National Park is home to the rare species of famous Himalayan snow leopards and their prey, the Ibex. The National  Park is most famous for its incredible trek. It snows for the most part of the year rendering the trek a thrilling and adventurous expedition. There are also Siberian Ibex, Bharal, red fox, weasel and marten that call this place their home. While foreign nationals are not permitted here, Indian nationals need a permit to visit.

Is Lahaul-Spiti dangerous?

Which is better, leh or spiti.

Making a choice between two places that have unparalleled beauty is quite difficult. Ladakh, unlike anything that you might have read about it, throws an expected surprise with its stunning landscape of high altitude lakes, stark barren valleys, the Khardung Pass that’s considered to be the highest motorable pass in the world, and several challenging summits. All of this and the fact that its tourism infrastructure has developed well over the years has made Ladakh’s into a crowded place, except during the winters. Spiti, on the other hand, despite its rustic & secluded villages, gorgeous 1000-year-old monasteries, picturesque lakes, the highest post office & motorable village in the world is still less crowded. The tourism infrastructure is still developing and quite a bit of the valley remains inaccessible. You need to hike to reach places like Dhankar and Chandratal Lake since there are no motorable roads.

How many days are enough for Spiti Valley?

You need a minimum of 7-8 days to do justice to a place like Spiti. This time is enough to visit the secluded off-point villages, see the monasteries, spend time with the local people, and try the amazing Tibetan food here.

Where else can you visit the highest post office in the world (Hikkim), visit centuries-old cliffside monasteries, see the highest village in the world (Kibber) and savour the gorgeous beauty of pristine mountain lakes and high passes like Baralacha La and Kunzum.

Spiti Valley and Ladakh are both fine destinations and it depends on your preferences as to which one you should choose. The type of vacation you have in mind should guide your decision between Spiti Valley and Ladakh. With options for thrill-seekers such as river rafting, bicycling, and jeep safaris, Ladakh is more suited to those with an adventurous mindset. Contrarily, Spiti Valley, with its abundance of monasteries, is attractive to visitors looking for a calm and spiritual experience. Both of these Himalayan valleys are influenced by Tibetan culture and have breathtaking natural beauty. Ultimately, what you want from a vacation experience will determine whether Spiti Valley or Ladakh is more desirable. Ladakh's diversity and accessibility may appeal to some, while Spiti Valley's seclusion and raw beauty may appeal to others.

Why is Spiti famous?

Its popular landmarks include the Tabo Monastery, a major Buddhist monastery renowned for its old temples, ornate murals, and admired stupas. When you book Spiti Valley holiday packages, you can see the beautiful scenery, which includes clear rivers, green fields, and snow-capped peaks. Spiti is a popular vacation spot for both nature and culture lovers because of its stunning scenery, spiritual atmosphere, and centuries-old monastic customs.

Can we go to Spiti Valley by flight?

Kalka to Shimla Toy train.

Enjoy climbing the first Himalayan hills in a narrow track gauge train.

In the morning, your guide will take you to the New Delhi railway station. You will travel by train to Kalka. You will change the train at the Kalka station to board the toy train, which dates back to Colonial rule. You will reach Shimla in the afternoon.

Shimla is the former summer capital of India before Independence. You can take a stroll on the Mall, a pedestrian area on top of the hill. Many buildings date back to the Colonial era and retain that style of architecture. You can choose to have dinner at one of the many trendy restaurants on the Mall. You will spend the night at a hotel.

Queen of the hills, Shimla.

The Mall is just front of the church on the top of the Queen of the hills.

Travel time: 7hr (train and car)

Altitude max: 2200m, altitude night: 2200m, reckong peo – kalpa.

Kinnaur kailash, Himachal pradesh.

Kinner Kailash

Kalka is located front of the majestic Kinner Kailash.

You will meet your Spiti guide at the hotel. He will accompany you for the rest of the trip up to Manali. Together, you will leave Shimla after breakfast.

After going through thick forests of Himalayan cedars, you will drive down to the Satluj river, fed by the Spiti river. We will follow this river for the next two days. It is a long drive today and you will cross a steep gorge.

After reaching Reckong Peo it takes about half an hour to reach the hotel in Kalpa, a comfortable place for the night after the long drive. You can enjoy the view of the looming Himalayan range with some peaks reaching around 6500m.

Kalpa, Himachal pradesh.

Altitude max: 2760m, altitude night: 2760m.

Nako village, Spiti valley.

On the way to Nako

You won’t resist using your camera going through these scenic landscapes.

Since Spiti lies on the border with China, foreigners need a permit to access this restricted area. So, after leaving Kalpa, we will take you to the concerned office in Reckong Peo. It will take around an hour to make your permit.

Shortly after leaving Reckong Peo, you will notice that the weather gets clearer and the vegetation scarcer. Leaving the monsoon-affected regions behind, you will begin to gradually enter the dry area of the Tibetan plateau. The landscape dramatically changes and the mountains reveal their geological history. Nako is located quite high on a mountain and the views and the sunset are a stunning sight.

Reaching Spiti

This relatively short drive to Tabo will amaze you !

From Nako, you will drive down again to the river and then continue the gradual climb to the Spiti Valley. After a couple of hours, you will reach the first village in Spiti: Tabo.

Tabo is located on the left bank of the Spiti river at an altitude of 3290m and between two steep mountain sides. Although a few tens of families engaged in agriculture work are settled in Tabo, everything seems to revolve around the monastery, which resembles a medieval castle surrounded by houses of peasants.

You will stay at a hotel at the center of the village near the monastery. You can meet some of the monks, or perhaps even the Lama, the head of the monastery.

Participating in the morning prayer at the monastery would be a nice start to your day, provided you wake up early as the prayers start at 6am. In the morning, we can ask the Lama to arrange a monk to guide you through the monastery. A donation to the monastery is appreciated.

You will have free time in the afternoon to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of Tabo. You can taste some delicious Tibetan food, visit the library of the monastery, roam around the village, and walk through the fields. You could also go to the meditation caves a bit above the village.

As soon as you are ready, we take the road again towards the village Dhankar.

There is a diversion from the main road that climbs to the village. This location above the river offers a stunning view. Moreover, the village is built on a rocky peak, adding to the scenic aspect of the place.

After lunch at Dhankar, we will take a secondary road that crosses the Spiti river and enters the Pin Valley known for its high peaks, glaciers, and mountain streams. You will stay overnight at Mud. The stay at Mud is less comfortable but this is where you will begin to engage with the local culture and hospitality.

After breakfast, we will leave Mud. After a quiet drive through Pin Valley, you will reach Kaza, where you will have time to explore the town after lunch and a short rest at the hotel. In the afternoon, your guide will show you the way to the market of Kaza. Take this opportunity to purchase souvenirs, meet other travellers in a cafe, or send an email to your loved ones.

Demul village, Spiti valley.

Demul village

You are among the people of Spiti. All good !

You will drive from Kaza to the left bank of the Spiti river where there is an impressive plateau at 1000m above the valley. Most parts of the plateau are too high to be inhabited. But a few villages lie on it. One of these villages is called Demul.

In rural India, the more remote a village, the more likely a traditional lifestyle is preserved. That is so with Demul where you will stay with a local family. You can explore the village, visit the fields, understand how these villagers sustain themselves in such a beautiful but inhospitable environment.

Hiking to Komic village, Spiti valley.

Hiking to Komic

Find yourself in the great wilderness of the Himalayas.

After your peaceful night at Demul, you will hike through these arid mountains to reach another village on the same plateau: Komic.

Although the elevation of the trek is quite high (you will approach around 5000m), the trail is not difficult. You can walk at an easy and regular pace. If you walk too fast, you will get breathless due to the lack of oxygen at this altitude.

After a couple of hours, you will reach Komic where there is a Buddhist monastery. You will stay in a homestay for the night. If you have time, you can spend time at the monastery for the exquisite sunset.

Key monastery, Spiti valley.

One of the most beautiful monastery in the Western Himalayas.

After your breakfast at the homestay, you can discuss the day’s programme with your guide. You will be staying at your hotel in Kaza and you can plan the rest of your day. You could send a postcard from the Hikkim post office, which is the highest in the world. After that you have two options: Visit Kibber village or the Kye monastery, the largest centre for teaching of Tibetan Buddhism in India.

You can easily do both. But if you prefer to spend more time in the monastery, you can skip Kibber. You could also be back on time in Kaza if you need to go to the market again.

Losar Khas, Lahaul Spiti

The way to Losar

Unbelievable road towards the sources of the Spiti river.

Take your time this morning. There is not much driving today. We have to reach Losar, which is the last village of Spiti before we reach Kunzum pass and Lahaul.

The road to Losar is beautiful and you will see how the Spiti river has carved stunning rock formations in the valley. You can ask your guide to stop any time to enjoy the places on the way and to take photographs.

After lunch at Losar, you can relax at the guesthouse or ask your guide to take you for a walk around the village.

Stop at the Kunzum pass and meditate for some time.

After a night in Losar, you have enough time to reach Kunzum pass. From here, you will continue on foot up to the Chandratal, a lake. You can take the vehicle, but we recommend a hike. It is a short 3-hour scenic hike. The views after the pass change abruptly to high mountains, large glaciers, steep valleys, and a multitude of mountain streams. We can camp a kilometer from the lake. The sunset here is gorgeous.

Chandratal lake Trek - Spiti valley tour with Himalayan Ecotourism

Leaving Chandratal

After an early morning hike to the lake again ?

If you wish, you can visit the lake again to experience it in morning light. Afterward, you have to leave for a unique and challenging drive.

Although the distance to cover today is not much, the road conditions are bad and time consuming. Each winter, the melting snow turns into powerful streams that destroy the road. At many places on the drive, the driver needs to go carefully across rivers cutting through the road.

You will spot large glaciers and waterfalls. After crossing Rohtang pass, you will be back in the monsoon-affected areas. After an hour’s descent, you will reach Manali.

Spiti tour – best time to go.

There are two important parameters that defines the best time to travel to Spiti.

The opening of the high motorable passes : Kunzum and Rohtang . These two passes are closed most of the time due to snow. The highest (Kunzum – 4550 m) is the most restrictive. It usually opens during the month of June and closes in October . You can visit Spiti when the passes are closed, but then you need to reach and returm from the Shimla road .

When the passes are open, it is the monsoon season in the Indian sub-continent. So you reach and leave the country in a cloudy weather with regular rains. Nevertheless, Spiti being in the continuity of the Tibetan plateau, it is not affected by the monsoon. It is also the time of the year when Spiti has the most pleasant temperature.

Offset your travel carbon emission.

Travelling is important in life ! A real travel is an experience of another place and another culture. Culture in its broad sense that includes everything : lifestyle, food, traditions, beliefs, languages, and so on. Travelling is to meet, in a respectul way, to exchange and to learn. That is how Himalayan Ecotourism considers ecotourism.

Unfortunatelly we live at a time of global climate crisis. We must reduce our greenhouse gases emission in the atmosphere to the minimum, whereas most of travel modes involve carbon emissions.

At Himalayan Ecotourism, we allow you to offset your carbon emission by supporting our tree plantation project in the Tirthan valley. You have to travel by air to reach India ? You plan to travel the Himalayas by motorcycle ? Be a responsible traveler, we strongly encourage you to offset your carbon emissions.

I just got back from my recent trip to Spiti, and it was one of the best trips I've ever taken! The group size was small, and they had a great support staff. The stays were comfortable in the bone-chilling cold, and the itinerary was exciting. 4X4 vehicles made it easy to get around. I had many memorable moments during the entire trip— definitely coming with Spiti Holiday Adventure again!
