The Unbroken Bond Between a Starship and Its Crew

A ship is more than just a vessel in Star Trek, it's a part of the family.

The crews, led by Captains Jonathan Archer, Philippa Georgiou, Gabriel Lorca, James T. Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard, Benjamin Sisko, and Kathyrn Janeway, included a variety of iconic characters, yet certain crew members could not be portrayed by actors — the starships themselves.

Each of the sentient crew members displayed attachment toward their vessels, took pride in the names emblazoned upon their hulls, and perceived the ships as valued friends rather than mere machines. Many Starfleet vessels were either mentioned in passing, specified by designation, or even seen on-screen. The names, classes, and histories of those starships carry the same weight as the cultures and personalities of any individual who appeared in Star Trek . Let's examine the unique relationships between these crews and their transportation to the stars.

Scotty and Picard sit on the original Enterprise NCC-1701 on the holodeck in 'Relics'

"Relics"

A crucial entry in the saga of a starship's importance is the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode " Relics ." After requesting to see the Bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise on a holodeck, Captain Montgomery "Scotty" Scott specified which vessel he meant by stating, "N-C-C 1-7-0-1. No bloody A, B, C, or D." Although Scotty also served on the U.S.S. Enterprise- A and a plethora of other ships, he admitted to Captain Picard that he only missed the original NCC-1701. Picard countered this claim with the notion that, while the Enterprise -D performed superbly, he often longed for his days of commanding the U.S.S. Stargazer . The statements from these officers exhibited their fondness for their vessels, as well as the idea that certain commands seemed more personal than others.

After arriving on Deep Space 9 for the first time, Lt. Commander Worf experienced distress over the loss of the Enterprise -D and the feeling of home it had provided. Worf soon showed the same level of concern for the U.S.S. Defiant during the Battle of Sector 001 in Star Trek: First Contact . Upon entering the Bridge of the Enterprise -E, Worf queried about the Defiant 's status and then took umbrage at Commander Riker's remark that, while tough, the Defiant appeared to be a "little ship." Lieutenant Barclay also felt he lost his family after the destruction of the Enterprise -D. In typical Barclay fashion, this resulted in an addiction to a holographic version of the U.S.S. Voyager .

Korax taunts Scotty and Chekov with taunts in the mess in 'The Trouble with Tribbles'

"The Trouble with Tribbles"

Barclay's need to find a new ship to call home seemed reminiscent of a person who had lost a significant other and attempted to ease their suffering with a new romance. This personification of vessels occurred often, with one of the most memorable scenes taking place during the Star Trek : The Original Series episode " The Trouble With Tribbles ." When the Klingon Korax insulted humans and took verbal jabs at Captain Kirk, Scotty held back his anger. Once Korax turned his vitriol toward Scotty's beloved U.S.S. Enterprise , the engineer no longer ignored the commentary and initiated a brawl.

Another instance where a starship's worth rivaled that of a person occurred at the end of Star Trek III: The Search For Spock . When Sarek spoke to Kirk about resurrecting Spock, he stated that the mission had cost Kirk his ship and his son. The notion that the loss of a ship would be mentioned in the same breath as the loss of a child demonstrated how much Sarek believed Kirk had cared for the Enterprise .

The tragic moments leading up to Spock's death in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan also provided a point of reference for a vessel's personification. After Kirk arrived in Engineering, Spock infamously asked, "Ship... out of danger?" In that situation, Spock utilized the word ship to refer to the Enterprise itself and its crew. The fact that a single word encompassed the Vulcan's concern for both machine and man demonstrated the ironclad ties connecting the two facets of the Federation's fleet.

Close-up of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D in 'The Measure of A Man'

"The Measure of a Man"

A starship's name and lineage are as important as the vessel itself. Upon visiting the Enterprise -D in The Next Generation episode " The Measure of A Man ," Admiral Nakamura remarked on the proud tradition established by previous vessels called Enterprise . Homages to history, in the form of starship models, adorned the Observation Lounges of the Enterprise -D and the Enterprise -E, and drawings performed similar duties in Captain Archer's Ready Room aboard the NX-01.

A name can also reflect the cultures and values that a starship's crew represents. Starfleet vessels tended to follow Earth’s traditional naming conventions, yet vessels such as the U.S.S. T'Kumbra , U.S.S. Shran , and U.S.S. Sarek reflected Vulcan and Andorian inclusion. Furthermore, names such as Odyssey , Venture , and Discovery provide general terms that allude to Starfleet's mission of exploration.

Captain Sisko and Jake look at Deep Space Nine as they approach the station. Their backs are to the camera, and Sisko's arm is around Jake in 'Emissary'

"Emissary"

The more information known about a starship, the more intricate the character of the vessel becomes. A designation gives the ship an identity, while the class speaks to its role. Quite a few unnamed vessels have been seen, particularly during the Dominion War. The transport which brought Benjamin and Jake Sisko to Deep Space 9 in " Emissary " serves as an interesting example. The ship never received a name, and only glimpses of its interior provided hints to its class.

We can theorize that with its expansive holodeck and large hallways, the transport could be a sizable Nebula -class explorer. As for a moniker, we can dig into the archives of history and call her the U.S.S. McKnight after Captain James McKnight, a hero of the American Civil War. In this hypothetical situation, the designation McKnight provides an attachment to previous vessels with the name and the exploits of its namesake. The Nebula -class confinement gives insight into the ship's mission profile. All of these details combine to enrich the character of the ship that performed the crucial task of introducing Ben Sisko to Deep Space 9 .

Star Trek Generations

Star Trek Generations

Two touching scenes perfectly summarize the relationships between starships and their crews. Following the destruction of the Enterprise -D in Star Trek Generations , Commander Riker lamented that he lost the opportunity to eventually captain the Enterprise . Despite suffering this tremendous loss, Picard quickly quipped, "Somehow I doubt that this will be the last ship to carry the name Enterprise ." The interaction served up an odd mix of sadness for their lost vessel and hope that its legacy might live on.

Ironically, after receiving a new Enterprise prior to Star Trek: First Contact , Picard hesitated to defeat the Borg by initiating the ship's self-destruct sequence, partly due to his desire not to lose another vessel. When Picard succumbed to the inevitable, Dr. Crusher asked him if another Enterprise would be built, to which Picard replied, "Plenty of letters left in the alphabet."

While these sentimental emotions centered around the legendary line of the Enterprise , every crew in the fleet surely feels the same bond with their vessels, whether their names are Defiant , Voyager , Odyssey , Venture , Shenzhou , or Discovery .

Star Trek: The Main Roles on a Starfleet Ship, Explained

With so many Star Trek characters fulfilling main roles on a Starfleet ship, how can anyone keep up with who's who without a handy reference list?

Captains might make up a majority of most Star Trek fans’ list of favorite characters, but these aren’t the only main roles keeping a Starfleet ship up and running. First Officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy) once reassured Captain Kirk (William Shatner) that a ship runs on loyalty to the captain. It was a rare emotional moment for the Vulcan (at least for The Original Series ) who’d taken the time to reassure his human friend of how impossible he was to replace with a super computer – no matter how smart it was.

However, the ever-logical officer was only half right. While a ship runs more smoothly when the crew can trust their leader, it takes a village to keep everything operating efficiently. From the command chair to the belly of the ship, everyone has an important role to play. Sometimes it’s as simple as exploring new planets, and other times it’s as complex as battling space sickness or dodging space gods.

Superior Officers of the Command Division

Starfleet may not be the Star Trek equivalent of a military organization, but it sure loves its sense of hierarchy. At the top of the food chain sits the captain. They’re in charge of all systems of operation whether they’re wearing the classic gold, some variation of red and black (like Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) in Star Trek: Voyager ), or even blue sometimes. The captain deals directly with the first officer, chief medical officer, and chief engineer. They also work directly with other members like the communications, navigation, and helm officers of the main bridge crew, whose roles are more supportive but no less vital.

Some of the most tense scenes in Star Trek occur in meetings between the senior staff and the senior bridge crew members, in which they figure out how to handle a potentially life-threatening situation . They have to navigate their own fears and each other’s opinions, all under the weight of the crew members' lives in their hands. To say that leading a Starfleet ship is stressful would be an understatement. On the flip side, the benefits of having bigger sleeping quarters make it all seem worth it...almost, at least.

Science Division and Galactic Research

Starfleet has continued valiantly fighting various military allegations by dedicating itself to the relentless pursuit of scientific knowledge throughout Star Trek . In some ways, that makes the entire ship a science department. Technically speaking, though, only some of the crew members have the official capacity to speak as experts in its many fields.

In The Original Series , Spock and his team focused on understanding new planets, with officers like Helmsman Hikaru Sulu (George Takei) specializing in plant life. Meanwhile, Dr. McCoy and his team of medical officers focused on maintaining the crew’s health, with Dr. M’Benga (Booker Bradshaw) specializing in Vulcan anatomy.

Later, The Next Generation introduced Dr. Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) as the first full-time psychologist on a Starfleet ship. Her first mission involved using her empathetic abilities as a Betazoid to rescue the crew from the meddlesome mind games of Q (John de Lancie). Troi had her hands full between the dangers of being a Starfleet officer and dealing with the trauma of her peers. Yet, no one can deny the impact her role had within Star Trek, and how the franchise has continued making room for mental health conversations even years later.

Engineering Division and Space Technology

The engineering department has had a tumultuous history in Star Trek . There are some legends in the field, like Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott (James Doohan). It's too bad that the subordinates in this department haven’t fared as well. In fact, the ill-fated term ‘redshirts’ has forever become synonymous with "extra who dies painfully on alien planet and/or in hostile situations." Star Trek: Discovery is one of the few TV shows that hasn’t killed off half of their redshirts.

The engineering team on Discovery eventually consisted of Ensign Tilly (Mary Wiseman), Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio), and Commander Reno (Tig Notaro), with Commander Stamets (Anthony Rapp) at the metaphorical helm. Still, in every show, one thing remains the same. When the crew is faced with impossible odds, the engineering officers step into their main roles of making a way out of nothing. From being yo-yo’d around a sun to using mushrooms to travel through space , they always find a way to save the day. Even the bright-eyed, bushy-tailed Ensign Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) of Strange New Worlds has a way of coming in clutch whenever the situation calls for it, and she only recently joined the team.

The Underdogs of the Lower Decks

That being said, there’s one true backbone of Star Trek . They’re the underdogs. The unspoken, often-unnamed hero of any movie, TV show, comic, or novelization. When things are going well, it’s because they’re working unseen in the background. When things go sideways, they’re either working to get things back in order, or they’re dying quietly as the main heroes rush to save the day. Who are they? The crew of the lower decks .

These crew members work tirelessly in command, engineering, and science just for other officers to take the credit. Luckily, though, Star Trek: Lower Decks is finally getting them the recognition they deserve. Characters like Ensigns Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Tendi (Noël Wells), and Rutherfod (Eugene Cordero) get into a lot of trouble on their own – but at least they’re not nameless or faceless in the process. These officers handle the details no one else wants, like maintaining the replicator or cleaning up the holosuites. It’s thankless and it’s gross, but there’s no one more qualified to do it.

The Harmony Of A Crew

Working for Starfleet on an active mission and doing so at its San Francisco headquarters are two different experiences. One entails bravely leaving behind all that is familiar for the wild unknown of greater space. The other entails handling the bureaucracy of politics and administration. While this sometimes allows admirals to buck the system like Admiral Cartwright (Brock Peters) in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , more often than not it’s just pushing paper. Likewise, officers on a Starfleet ship might have some boring days when they get stuck in a routine.

When things get exciting, however, there’s never any surefire way to guess what will happen next. It’s an unpredictable type of exhilaration. So, the most important aspect of any ship is the ones working within it. Command leads the people, scientists gain knowledge, and engineers manage the very ship itself. Star Trek reminds fans that everyone has a part to play, no matter how big or small. The main roles may shift at times, but the goal remains the same: “To explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no one has gone before!”

Screen Rant

Star trek: discovery’s 4 number ones explained.

Star Trek: Discovery has had four different Number Ones over the course of its five seasons, including Captain Michael Burnham.

  • Star Trek: Discovery features a rotating cast of Captains and Number Ones, showcasing dynamic leadership changes throughout the series.
  • Characters like Saru, Burnham, Tilly, and new addition Rayner bring diverse personalities and skills to the USS Discovery crew.
  • The evolution of these key roles, from First Officer to Captain, demonstrates the growth and adaptability of each character over the seasons.

Just as Star Trek: Discovery has featured several different Captains of the USS Discovery throughout its five-season run, the show has also introduced four different Number Ones. Since its beginning, Discovery has been less of an ensemble show than previous Star Trek series, and the crew of the USS Discovery has been constantly shifting. Discovery tells the story of Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who has gone from being an accomplished First Officer to a notorious criminal to the Captain of Discovery. Burnham has filled the position of Number One more than once, and two of her best friends have also taken on that role.

Ambassador Saru (Doug Jones) and Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) have both served as First Officers of the USS Discovery, although their careers have since taken them in different directions. In Star Trek: Discovery season 4, the show found a dynamic that worked well, with Burnham as Captain and Saru as her First Officer. But Discovery can never go too long without shaking things up, and Callum Keith Rennie's Commander Rayner did just that when he joined the cast of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 . As Captain Burnham's newest Number One, Rayner has proven to be a great addition to Discovery's crew, despite (and also because of) his gruff, no-nonsense command style.

Every Star Trek Discovery Captain In All 5 Seasons

4 commander/captain saru, under the command of captain gabriel lorca & captain michael burnham.

During the two-part premiere of Star Trek: Discovery, Saru was serving as the Chief Science Officer on the USS Shenzhou, under the command of Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). After Commander Burnham committed mutiny and Captain Georgiou was killed, Saru was promoted Commander and became First Officer on the USS Discovery, under the command of Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) . Although Saru had not yet gained the confidence he would in later seasons of Star Trek: Discovery , he proved to be a capable and compassionate First Officer.

Saru took over command of the USS Discovery after Lorca was revealed to be from the Mirror Universe, and he shared "joint custody" of the ship with Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) for most of Star Trek: Discovery season 2.

Saru commanded the USS Discovery for its journey to the 32nd century, and he was promoted to Captain. Saru later took time away from Starfleet to become a member of the village council on his homeworld of Kaminar. After the Dark Matter Anomaly destroyed Kwejian, Saru returned to Discovery as Captain Burnham's First Officer, retaining the rank of Captain but choosing to go by the designation Mr. Saru. As the first Kelpien in Starfleet, Saru had already made history , but in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Saru accepted a position as a Federation Ambassador, adding another achievement to his impressive resume.

3 Commander Michael Burnham

Under the command of captain philippa georgiou & captain saru.

When Star Trek: Discovery began, Commander Burnham was serving as the First Officer on the USS Shenzhou, under the command of Captain Georgiou. After her subsequent mutiny, Burnham served six months in prison before transferring to the USS Discovery, where Captain Lorca assigned her as a Specialist in the science division. After Michael helped end the Federation/Klingon War, she was fully reinstated as a Commander and became Chief Science Officer on Discovery. At the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 2, Burnham wore the Red Angel suit to lead the USS Discovery into the 32nd century.

Michael Burnham was a fine First Officer (aside from the whole mutiny thing), but she truly excels at being a Starfleet Captain.

Captain Burnham arrived in the future a year before Discovery, but she later reconnected with her former crew and reluctantly accepted the role of Captain Saru's Number One. Michael served as First Officer throughout Star Trek: Discovery season 3, until she helped take the ship back from Osyraa (Janet Kidder), the leader of the Emerald Chain. Saru then suggested that Burnham take over as Captain , and Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) assigned Michael as Captain of the USS Discovery. Michael Burnham was a fine First Officer (aside from the whole mutiny thing), but she truly excels at being a Starfleet Captain.

With its time travel plot that saw Captain Burnham run into her past self, Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange," illustrates just how far Michael has come since Discovery season 1.

2 Lt. Sylvia Tilly

Under the command of captain saru & captain michael burnham.

Sylvia Tilly began her Star Trek: Discovery career as a cadet aboard the USS Discovery under the command of Captain Lorca. After the end of the Klingons' War with the Federation , Tilly was promoted to Ensign and was placed on the command track. She continued on this trajectory until Discovery traveled into the future. When Captain Saru demoted Burnham for insubordination, he asked Tilly to be his First Officer. Although she was initially reluctant to take the job, fearing others on the ship were better qualified, Tilly's fellow crew members assured her she was the right choice as Number One.

After Commander Burnham helped take the USS Discovery back from Osyraa and became Captain, Tilly remained First Officer and was promoted to Lt. junior grade. Tilly then began to question whether she wanted to remain on the command track, and spoke with Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) about ways she could step out of her comfort zone. Culber recommended Tilly for a mission that involved leading a group of young Starfleet cadets. Although the mission quickly turned dangerous, Tilly successfully coached the cadets through it, and she later accepted a teaching position at the recently reopened Starfleet Academy.

Star Trek: Discovery Proves Starfleet Academy Show Doesn’t Make Sense Without Tilly

1 commander rayner, under the command of captain michael burnham.

Callum Keith Rennie's Commander Rayner joined the cast of Star Trek: Discovery for its fifth and final season, and the gruff former Captain has proven to be a breath of fresh air. In Discovery's season 5 premiere, Rayner held the rank of Captain and commanded the USS Antares, but was asked to accept early retirement after making a questionable call during a Red Directive mission. Captain Burnham, however, asked Rayner to be her new First Officer after Saru accepted a position as a Federation Ambassador.

Commander Rayner has proven invaluable to Discovery's mission and remains a highlight of Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

As a Kellerun, Commander Rayner's personality contrasts sharply with the more optimistic crew of the USS Discovery, and his command style is very different from Burnham's. Rayner has struggled to relate to Discovery's crew members and adapt to Michael's command style , but his advice and knowledge have helped save the day on multiple occasions. As Discovery races against couriers Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) to find the Progenitors' treasure, Commander Rayner has proven invaluable to the mission and remains a highlight of Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

The Star Trek franchise consists primarily of several multi-season television shows and a dozen movies, as well as various video games and inspired merchandise. Many aspects of the fictional universe impact modern popular culture, especially the lingo and the idea of a spacecraft launching space torpedoes and firing lasers, and have had a wide influence in the late 20th to early 21st century. Star Trek is popular enough that its science fiction concepts have even been studied by real scientists, and NASA described its science in relation to the real world as "entertaining combination of real science, imaginary science gathered from lots of earlier stories, and stuff the writers make up week-by-week to give each new episode novelty." For example, NASA noted that the Star Trek "phasers" were a fictional extrapolation of real-life lasers, and compared them to real-life microwave based weapons that have a stunning effect.

Earth Spacedock is a fictional space station orbiting Earth in the Star Trek universe, designed originally by David Carson and Nilo Rodis of Industrial Light and Magic in the 1980s. It is large enough to contain several starships of that fictional universe, and in real life the Spacedock consisted of a series of sets, miniatures, and designs that were used for various films and television shows in the 1980s and 1990s. Written spacedock , it is first seen in the 1984 theater film Star Trek III: The Search for Spock , and subsequently in the fourth, fifth, and sixth Star Trek movies.

The Star Trek franchise has produced a large number of novels, comic books, video games, and other materials, which are generally considered non-canon.

Shuttlecraft are fictional vehicles in the Star Trek science fiction franchise built for short trips in space, such as between a planetary surface and orbit. Also referred to as shuttles , their introduction preceded the development of the Space Shuttle.

Star Trek is an American media franchise based on the science-fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry. The first television series, called Star Trek and now known as " The Original Series " , debuted on September 8, 1966 and aired for three seasons on NBC. It followed the voyages of the starship USS Enterprise on its five-year mission, the purpose of which was "to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before!". The USS Enterprise was a space exploration vessel built by the United Federation of Planets in the 23rd century. The Star Trek canon includes the Original Series , an animated series, five spin-off television series, the film franchise, and further adaptations in several media.

The Star Trek franchise features many spacecraft. Various space vessels make up the primary settings of the Star Trek television series, films, and expanded universe; others help advance the franchise's stories. Throughout the franchise's production, spacecraft have been depicted by numerous physical and computer-generated models. Producers worked to balance often tight budgets with the need to depict convincing, futuristic vessels.

Star Trek has had strong starships designs since the very beginning. Let’s dig a bit deeper to know more.

The history of Star Trek dates back to 1966-1967 with The Original Series Season 1. All this began when a writer and former Air Force pilot, Gene Roddenberry , wanted to make a science fiction TV show that featured characters that show humanity at its best.

Since then, there has been no looking back as Star Trek has become one of the most popular sci-fi television shows of all time. While it has been entertaining its audience for decades and is globally known for its genre of science fiction, it’s also known for it’s the great space battles with different alien species.

Over the years, the show came up with dozens of iconic starship designs, many of which are even known to people who don’t follow Star Trek. The idea behind the creation of these ships was to represent the diversity of various races, cultures, and factions. So, whether it’s the TOS ( The Original Series ), Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) , Deep Space Nine (DS9), Voyager, or Picard , the show has always lived up to the expectation of producing some vast fleets that demonstrated the abilities at their best.

If you have to rank these astonishing ships, what do you think? Which are the most powerful ships of all? Not sure about the answer? No problem, here we are, revealing a list of 30 most powerful Star Trek ship names today.

List of Powerful Star Trek Ship Names Revealed

30. ss botany bay.

SS Botany Bay

Built in the late 20 th century by the United States of America, this DY-100-class sleeper ship played a great role in helping Khan Noonien Singh and his group to escape Earth after being defeated at Eugenics Wars . You can explore the nuclear power of this ship and know more about it by watching the prime timeline of Star Trek – TOS.

29. Phoenix

Phoenix, an Earth spaceship, was constructed during the mid-21 st century. The interesting fact about this ship is that it used to be a nuclear missile. Yes, Lily Sloane and Zefram Cochrane later converted this missile into a prototype spaceship. Isn’t it amazing? That’s not it; it is also known to be the first human-made spacecraft launched from Earth to travel faster than the speed of light by using warp-drive technology.

28. Friendship 1

You will come across this Star Trek ship name in a Star Trek: Voyager episode. Launched in 2067 by the United Earth Space Probe Agency, four years after the Phoenix’s game-changing flight, this deep space probe came to find other species. The Friendship 1 ship’s exquisite feature is that it contained a lot of scientific, technological, and cultural information that helped to seek out new worlds and new civilizations.

27. USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-J)

You can get a glimpse of this starship in the “Azati Prime” – The Star Trek: Enterprise episode. It bags one of the top spots in the list as it boasts some of the advanced technologies. However, it is not that popular due to two reasons – one, it just has a brief glimpse, and second, a time-traveling Captain said that the Enterprise-J exists in a possible future timeline.

26. Galileo (NCC-1701-7)

Assigned to the USS Enterprise in the 2260s, Galileo was a Class F shuttlecraft and bore the name of the great astronomer and mathematician of all time. They first used a telescope – Galileo Galilei. However, this craft was lost near Taurus II in 2267, at the time of the Murasaki Effect investigation. It was then replaced with the same numbered craft that was dubbed as the ‘Galileo II.’

25. USS Raven (NAR-32450)

This Federation exploration vessel was the home and the workplace of Magnus and Erin Hansen, the Borg-studying scientists. Check out its remains in the Star Trek: Voyager episode, “The Raven.”

24. Deep Space Nine

Deep Space 9 - space station

While this isn’t technically a ship, its a space station, we though it was important to include. There are two sides to this. On one side, it is simply an old Cardassian mining station for the same-titled TV series. While on the other hand, the same mining station is modified and reconstructed into a battle station with 5,000 photon torpedoes in Deep Space Nine – Season 4 of Star Trek.

23. USS Defiant (NX-74205)

Built for Borg battles, this amazing Federation craft was armed with a cloaking device that was lent from the Romulan Star Empire. It is known to be one of the successful warships that you can see for yourself in Star Trek: Deep Space Nin e as well as Star Trek: First Contact . Also know for it’s “mining” capabilities in games.

22. La Sirena

Memory Alpha states that this newcomer Star Trek ship is a Kaplan F17 Speed Freighter, a class of civilian ships equipped with phasers and shields but a whole lot of hologram capacities. Not to forget, it is the only entry from Star Trek: Picard.

21. USS Franklin (NX-326)

This ship is small, but at the same time, tough, just like other Freedom-class starships. You can see this 22 nd -century ship in the Kelvin timeline of Star Trek: Beyond, seat belts. It is equipped with stealth technology, cannons, and torpedoes, and its warp four power was used to get to the Starbase Yorktown from the planet, Altamid .

20. Enterprise (NX-01)

In the 22nd century of Star Trek: Enterprise , you can see how this starship has the potential to carry a huge crew of almost 100 people. It is remembered as a victory of Zefram Cochrane’s theories of space travel.

19. Sh’Raan

Even though the Vulcans are known better than combat ships for logic, the pre-Federation years have seen Spock’s forerunners ready to throw down in Sh’Raan – the Star Trek: Enterprise -era starship that was capable of Warp 7 power.

18. USS Shenzhou (NCC-1227)

This Walker-class Federation USS starship was introduced in the 23 rd century, and you can see it in Star Trek: Discovery. It had everything, including phasers, cannons, and torpedoes, but unfortunately, it got smashed in the Battle of the Binary Stars that occurred in 2256.

17. Sarcophagus

Bigger than the Shenzhou, Klingon starship of the 23rd-century can be witnessed in the Star Trek: Discovery pilot. One interesting feature of the Sarcophagus is that its armor contains the remains of Klingon warriors in the form of a patchwork of caskets.

16. Jem’Hadar Warship

Simply put, it’s all interconnected when we talk about this warship. The story of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is incomplete without the Dominion, and the story of Dominion is incomplete without the Jem’Hadar warship, i.e., its military division.

15. USS Prometheus (NCC-71201)

This Nebula-class Federation USS starship is in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . It was introduced as a floating science trial. It not only gets the job done but is also famous for its magnificent goal of reigniting a dead sun.

14. USS Excelsior (NX-2000)

It is featured in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country as the first Federation starship having trans-warp drive. This 23rd-century ship was operated by Starfleet and served Captain Hikaru Sulu , who commanded the Excelsior from 2290 to at least 2320.

13. D7-class Battle Cruiser

This Klingon starship is considered the largest of its era as it was 748 feet long and had 430 crew members. Although many other cooler introductions came along in the 24 th century, this starship still holds a higher rank. It is also termed as ‘ the pinnacle of combat warships in the 23rd century ’ as per StarTrek.com.

12. Scimitar

This Reman-made ship boasts about a lot of things. Featuring in Star Trek: Nemesis , it is loaded with photon-torpedo bays and disruptor banks. Additionally, Scimitar can convert itself into a Thalaron weapon. It is similar to a nuclear weapon but has far more destructive attributes than the latter.

11. Vor’Cha-class Attack Cruiser

This was yet another heavily armed Klingon starship used during the middle and later part of the 24 th century. It was almost as long as a Galaxy-class Federation craft and was similarly used as the backbone of the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance fleet in the mirror universe.

10. USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A)

Have you seen the original iconic Enterprise? USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A) is a Constitution-class starship that is essentially a replica of it. It was first featured in the prime timeline of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home . Additionally, it also appears in the Kelvin timeline of the J.J. Abrams-era Star Trek films.

9. USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B)

USS Enterprise-B is a polished version of the prime timeline’s Constitution-class Enterprise. This Excelsior-class Federation starship was introduced in the 23rd century and can be seen in Star Trek Generations .

8. USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), Prime Timeline

The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) was a 23rd century Federation Constitution-class starship launched in 2258. Officially Federation was a flagship, this starship was operated by Starfleet. Unfortunately, it was destroyed during the planet Altamid battle in 2263.

7. USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), Kelvin Timeline

This starship was introduced in the 23rd century, so it has the potential of more than warp 8. In fact, it became the first Federation starship to start a five-year mission under the command of Captain James T. Kirk . It is said to be more than double the size of the Prime Timeline’s Enterprise.

6. Romulan Warbird

Romulan Warbird

Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew were awestruck by this Romulan Warbird for obvious reasons in Star Trek: The Next Generation . According to StarTrek.com, it is considered to be the largest and the most powerful Romulan spacecraft.

5. Negh’Var Warship

Negh’Var Warship was the largest class of starship, running more than 2,250 massive feet long. This powerful starship was operated as the emperor’s flagship in the Klingon Empire during the late 24 th century.

4. USS Vengeance

Designed and developed by Khan Noonien Singh and Section 31, Star Trek: Into Darkness reveals how scary this 23rd-century starship is. From Star Trek’s Kelvin timeline, this ship was specifically created for combat and was commissioned in 2259. It has very assassin type feel.

3. The Whale Probe

You cannot stop boasting about the exquisite features of this starship – the Whale Probe. Featured in the Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , defeating it is out of the question as it is a massive, power-sucking, starship-disabling, and ocean-vaporizing craft that visited Earth in 2286 to contact members of the humpback whale species.

2. Xindi Probe

Xindi Probe

We can define this starship as a pure beam of destructive force. Seen in Star Trek: Enterprise, this Xindi Probe not only attacked Earth in the 22nd century but also successfully killed more than 7 million people from Florida to Venezuela leaving complete destruction in it’s wake.

Nomad starship was designed by Dr. Jackson Roykirk and served in the first part of the 21st century. It was created with two goals: to create a ship that could function as an accurate thinking machine while using logic and find new lifeforms in interstellar space. This powerful starship had the potential to clear out at least 4 billion people from four different planets. You can see how Captain Kirk and his team face it in the Star Trek TOS episode, The Changeling.

Wrapping It Up

See awesome great details in this book Ships of the Line on amazon . There are more powerful Star Trek ships in addition to this list. The Doomsday Machine, the Krenim Temporal Weapon Ship , the Species 8472 bioship , the Narada , the Borg Cube , and V’Ger are undoubtedly powerful Star Trek ships featured in different timelines. The high-tech development and their powerful specifications have made them the most powerful ships of the Star Trek era.

'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 5's Captain Rayner Ran His Ship Like a Pirate

Callum Keith Rennie also discusses coming into 'Discovery's final season, getting into prosthetics, and how much he has in common with Rayner.

The Big Picture

  • Callum Keith Rennie's Captain Rayner brings conflict and depth to Star Trek: Discovery 's final season.
  • Rennie discusses his experience on Star Trek: Discovery , praising the supportive cast and crew, despite the initial challenges of joining an established series for its last season.
  • In Season 5, Episode 4 "Face the Strange," Burnham and Rayner must work together within a time bubble to save the universe.

As Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) embarks on one last adventure with her crew, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 is bringing a few new characters along for the ride. Chief among those newcomers is the blunt, war-worn Captain Rayner. Played by Battlestar Galactica alum Callum Keith Rennie , Rayner is Burnham's new second in command on the Discovery , taking over after Saru ( Doug Jones ) took a different position at Starfleet.

Having lived through The Burn, Rayner doesn't have time for niceties and butts heads with Burnham almost immediately — so naturally, she takes it upon herself to give him a second chance when Starfleet is ready to cut him loose. Last week's episode saw him, rightfully, put in his place a bit as Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ) attempted to help him connect with the crew, much to his chagrin. In Season 5 Episode 4, "Face the Strange," Rayner and Burnham are thrown into a time bubble, forcing them to work together if they ever want to get back to the correct timeline and prevent the universe from being destroyed.

Ahead of the episode, I sat down with Rennie to dig into Rayner's backstory, what we can expect from him in the rest of the season, and what it will take for Rayner to truly connect with the crew of Discovery . During our conversation, we also discussed Rennie's history with sci-fi, what it was like joining Discovery for the show's final season, and what he's taking away from the whole experience.

Star Trek: Discovery

Taking place almost a decade before Captain Kirk's Enterprise, the USS Discovery charts a course to uncover new worlds and life forms.

Rennie is no stranger to science fiction, having had roles in such series as The Umbrella Academy , Jessica Jones, and Battlestar Galactica. As Battlestar Galactica was the series that turned me into a sci-fi fan, and perhaps Rennie's most recognizable role, I had to ask him about being a part of such massive and beloved franchises within the genre. "It's amazing," he said. For Rennie, even though Battlestar was also a reboot of a classic series , the show's success was a lot less predictable than the mainstay that is Star Trek . He explained, "Like, say Battlestar , when I started on that I had no idea where that one was gonna go. Discovery was already very established , but I actually didn't let any of that into my [head], because I went, “That's not gonna help.” So, I didn’t. Now, I'm feeling the world of it. Now, I'm sensing what the world of Discovery is and how many people love it, and how it fits. "

Discovery also isn't his first experience with Star Trek , "I watched the original. That was my thing, and that was it," Rennie told me. While he may have missed some of the series' in between, saying, "There's big chunks of time where I just didn't watch a lot of TV, so I missed all of the other stuff," he'll always make time for The Original Series when he comes across it, "even if the old Star Trek comes on, I'll still watch it because that was my Star Trek . Jim Kirk, and all of that. "

While we've gotten a pretty good sense of who Rayner is in these first four episodes, most of his backstory remains a mystery. Rennie revealed that "some backstory comes up in a few episodes." Part of his gruff exterior will be explained as we'll "get a sense of why he's maybe got a chip on his shoulder and has some unprocessed resentments about a bunch of things that maybe have played out in his work in a negative way."

Rennie Calls 'Star Trek: Discovery's Latest Episode "Amazing"

"Face the Strange," is such a classic Star Trek episode, employing the ever-entertaining sci-fi trope of sticking our main characters in a time loop, both to put an obstacle in their path as well as to bring them face to face with some of their own demons. For Rennie, the episode really put the science in science fiction. "It was like, 'Whoa! What's happening? I don't get it.' There's just so much science stuff and talk, so much jumping about to places and history and stuff." But he had high praise for his fellow castmates as well as the crew behind the camera." Lee [Rose] being the director, you're in great hands. Being in scenes with Sonequa, you know that you're gonna be in it , and it was great. I watched it again last night, and there’s just an amazing amount of stuff in there. It was just an amazing episode. "

In this episode, Burnham and Rayner are tossed back in time to the first season of Discovery , bringing them both face to face with the version of Burnham who's fresh off her own demotion in Starfleet . Throughout the episode, it becomes quite clear that Burnham and Rayner have a lot more in common than either of them might have realized. When asked if this experience might put them more on equal footing, Rennie confirmed that "he's learned an understanding of the crew." He went on to point out that we haven't seen the relationship that Rayner had with his own crew.

He explained: "We're not on the Antares talking about his crew, which I think is an important part that we missed, where you go, 'How did I see my people on my particular ship? And how well did I know them?' No one's asking me how well I knew everybody because I did, but if I've only been there a brief time, you're only gonna have facts." He admits that it is important for Rayner to connect past the surface level. "Through that particular episode, you learn and go, 'Yes, it is good to know what people are up to and where they're from,' because in that particular instance, it saved us. So, I learned a thing, and I give a, 'Yes. Got it. Thank you.'"

Rayner Will Have to Shorten the Distance Between Himself and the Discovery Crew

While it doesn't sound like we'll be getting any flashbacks to Rayner's time on the Antares Rennie believes that he'd spent a similar amount of time with that crew as Michael has with hers. "We didn't get to inhabit that, I get to make it up in my own mind," he said. "But for me, it was more like a pirate ship that I had. " While Rayner comes off as the more stubborn, stick-to-the-mission Captain between him and Burnham, Rennie doesn't think he was quite so strict on his own ship. He said:

"That's the way I perceived it. It wasn't some rigid, completely stoic, boss fest, but a little bit of a wild card ship. We're gonna go into things that nobody else wants to go into, or knows how to deal with, but we would. "

While the walls around Rayner are still pretty high, Rennie explained that we will see him "shorten the distance" he's put between himself and the crew of the Discovery. "There's a great bit, there's an episode where Burnham leaves me again to take control of the ship. There's an interaction with everybody in a certain way because they don't like me yet. [Laughs] And I need some help a little bit, but I've created a distance, and I have to shorten that distance between everybody." He went on to say there are plenty of "fun dynamics" to look forward to and Rayner's insistence on keeping everyone at arm's length will likely come back to bite him.

Star Trek has quite a long list of original alien species created for the franchise, and Rayner just happens to be a Kellerun, a race that hasn't been seen since Deep Space Nine . In classic Trek fashion, Kelleruns appear mostly human with the most visible difference being the shape of the ears. As he follows in the footsteps of the likes of Leonard Nimoy and any actor who has ever played a Vulcan or a Romulan, I asked Rennie about getting into prosthetics for the role. "Those guys are great. Rocky [Faulkner] was great, Nicola [Bendrey] was great." While it was certainly an extra step the process was brief enough that it didn't bother him to come to set a bit earlier than usual. "That was probably an hour, and I really didn't think about that enough to go, 'Oh, that's right. I have to get up earlier.' But I think we got it down to an hour and a bit for just the ears because there’s a lot of stuff on them."

Despite the agonizing wait of sitting in front of a mirror for an hour, Rennie noted that Faulkner and Bendrey made the make-up experience as fun as it could possibly have been. He said: "I don't love just sitting there looking at myself for an hour, but there's music and great company and coffee, and it became a really sweet part of the day, and then another sweet part of the day where I download. " It wasn't his first time getting into prosthetics, but his previous experience had been brief. After playing Rayner across an entire season, Rennie admitted by the end, removing the glue actually started to feel like you'd expect pulling costume glue off your ears to feel. "There was a point near the end where the glue-on, glue-off became quite painful for a while."

The Support of the Cast and the Fans Are Highlights of Rennie's 'Star Trek' Experience

While this is Rennie's first season on the show, it's the final bow for Star Trek: Discovery . When asked what he'd be taking away from this experience, he had nothing but high praise for the cast and crew. As a newcomer on a well-established show, jumping into the fifth season had a bit of a learning curve. "I found that coming into the show was difficult for me because it was unlike a show that I'd been on before. It was already very well established." He went on to say:

"I pat myself on the back because I made it through, and there was this wonderful group energy that helped me do that. The good naturedness of the show was something that I maybe haven't worked on. There was a wholehearted goodness about it, which was quite nice, which overlapped into how people treated each other and mutual respect. Also, I kind of blocked out all Star Treks in my mind, so I'm there not thinking of Star Trek history. I'm just doing scene-to-scene and working on this stuff, and then it finishes, and then I forget that there's an incredible vast following of the show that somehow you are now part of it like that. All of that, this is all relatively new to me."

As a new addition to an already established group, I pointed out that it seemed as though Rennie's experience mirrored that of his characters, and he agreed. "I'm excited for people to see the season. And then, coming into it playing, “I don't want to be liked. It doesn't matter if I'm liked. I'm there to do my job, like Rayner, and I'm doing it. And then there's the after-effect of an incredible fan base that seems to be very supportive ."

Crew Abilities

Ship Combat is a core gameplay mechanic in Star Trek Timelines , and a key part of Ship Combat are the abilities your crew bring to the battle. As captains of a starship, players may build and upgrade two dozen different ships, from common ships like the Constellation Class to Legendary ships like the Borg Cube . Those ships may be used in Missions , or in the Arena . Alongside those ships are hundreds of crew , who provide all sorts of abilities for your ships.

Crew Ability Overview

Crew Abilities are broken down into two types: Standard abilities and special abilities . All abilities only apply when a crew member is tapped in combat, and only for a period of time.

Standard abilities are the primary stat modifiers that you see on the crew’s portrait. It’s what you should think of when you see a red “+5” next to a crew. This ability increases the stats of your ship while it’s active. All crew have an inherent ability.

Special abilities are specific actions that occur when that crew is activated. Some crew provide a one-time damage bonus; others may modify your crit rating or crit bonus. Some crew may not have any special abilities at all.

Many special abilities are triggered only when your ship has the capability of Cloaking , Positional , or Boarding , and that ship feature has been activated. For an overview which ships can provide which triggers, see ships .

Your crew also have Initialize , Cooldown , and Duration . The crew’s Initialize is how long from the beginning of the battle you need to wait until you can use their ability. This means that an initial warm-up of 15s prevents me from using that crew for the first 15s. Cooldown is how long you need to wait after using the crew for them to recharge. And Duration is how long their ability stays active.

NOTE: Some crew abilities come with a penalty as well. For example, a crew ability may increase Attack by 3, but at a cost of reducing your Evasion by 1. Look for the details by tapping and holding on your crew’s ability, or when slotting them into your Battle Stations.

Equipment Bonuses

Your ship’s crew slots have a bonus. If you slot a crew member that meets that bonus, they will apply an equipment bonus to your ship. This equipment bonus is a passive bonus that applies to your ship while it is in combat. It is only active if you match a crew member of the correct type with the ships slot type. You may still slot different crew in that spot, but they will not give their equipment bonus.

Activating Crew Abilities of the Same Type

When adding crew to your Battle Stations, you’re able to slot in crew with the same type of standard ability. That means, if you wanted to, you could slot in four crew that all changed your Attack stats. What happens when you attempt to use those crew at the same time?

First, the crew with the highest value gets applied to your ship. When activating two crew at the same time that have the same type of bonus, the highest value is applied to your ship.

Second, this is recalculated if an ability ends, so if you had two crew who applied a bonus of 9 and 7, and the 9 bonus ended but the 7 bonus continued, you would see your ship attack increase by 9, then decrease to 7 when the higher value crew ended their ability.

Third, changes to your ship’s stats from your crew don’t stack. If you had three crew activated, and all three modified your attack, only the change from the highest value crew would be applied. NOTE: Specific crew abilities, like one-time damage increases or modifiers, would still affect your ship even if the crew’s primary stat isn’t applied.

Crew Complement of Starships

Discussion in ' General Trek Discussion ' started by Shamrock Holmes , Mar 20, 2018 .

There have been several discussions in the past about viable crew complements of various ships and whether they are realistic. I've got a slightly different question regarding crew complements. Why do starships have such a wide range of standard crew versus maximum (sometimes referred to as the evacuation capacity)? Examples: Galaxy -class: 1013 (standard), 15,000 (evacuation). 6.75% Intrepid -class: 150 (approximate), 350-400 (evacuation*). 37.5 to 42.9% Consitution -class: 203-433 (standard), 547+ (diplomatic). 37.5 to 79% Defiant -class: 40-50 (standard), 150 (evacuation). 26.7 to 33.3% Saber -class: 40 (standard), 200 (evacuation). 20% * based on accommodating over 200 Klingons in "Prophecy". The Galaxy class appears to be the exception to the rule, however the est 7,000 crew of the Battleship Enterprise from "Yesterday's Enterprise" bumps it up to 47% which seems more reasonable (though the regular counterpart would carry diplomats, medical and supply personnel and maybe dual-use "cultural liaison teams" (think US Green Berets) rather than marines or army infantry). Any thoughts?

Well, crew is not a "capacity" - it's a liability. A ship tries to make do with as few personnel as possible, but sometimes the automation just isn't up to the job and Starfleet is forced to assign a crewman or two aboard, and provide them with those expensive and cumbersome means of survival and sustenance. Evacuation in turn is very much a "capacity", and should have very little to do with crew size. Sure, it may consume the same life support resources, but then again, perhaps not. Evacuees are just self-loading cargo, and for all we know there's a life support container added per every thousand evacuees. The ships with the smallest crews might be the ones with the greatest potential for evacuees or other passengers, what with the crew not getting in their way. We've seen starships fly under the control of a single person, or three starships fly under the control of four people in one of them. Now, keeping them flying probably takes more people. But most of Kirk's 430 people may still well be passengers, that is, mission specialists. And most of Pike's 207 may be that, too. The design of the ship is unlikely to set much in the way of limits... Kirk could just as well have hosted 800 people, by shipping a couple of those booster containers and skimping on comforts. etc. Timo Saloniemi

Hmm, good question. It depends chiefly on whether I want to believe in a "standard complement" as a concept or not. If the ship has "design specs" for a given number of crew, then this number is what Pike would be quoting largely regardless of who many people happen to be aboard at the time - and this would then basically have to be 203+skipper, from which we need to deduce the casualties. But if the ship is built more on the lines of needing, say, 70-90 people to operate efficiently, and then has capacity for varying numbers of two-legged payload, then there would be no "fallback" number for Pike to quote, and he would basically have to go for the current complement, this being the 203+skipper after the casualties and thus 207 before the casualties. I'm more in the latter camp, as we a) already learn from the Enterprise example that the crew count can vary by several hundred percent within a decade or so and b) recently have had extra incentive from DSC to think that the actual operating crew of a large starship is actually very small, perhaps significantly less than a hundred. Hence, and quite incidentally and insignificantly, 206 rather than 199 in addition to Pike - that specific day, and probably subject to changes within the week. Timo Saloniemi

Evacuation limit would be for short-term transport during emergencies, which would put the ships environmental and life support systems to their maximum output (same with replicator matter and emergency supplies).
I'm not sure if there is any basis for this, but I've always assumed the around 200 quoted by Pike was basically the 'core crew' (flight ops, engineering, admin, and minimal medical and scientific staff (Spock in The Cage could have been the Science Officer because he was the only one aside from crewman to chief ranked leab techs), while the 430-odd of the Kirk-era including additional medical and scientific teams (including several non-essential mission specialists) for the 'Five Year Mission'. It's suggestive at best, but the episode "The 37s" suggests that 75 personnel is insufficient to operate Voyager long-term (although the Maquis remaining circa "Repression" seemed to believe that they were up to the job - despite having a lot less than that), and that a minimum of 100 would be required.

JirinPanthosa

JirinPanthosa Admiral Admiral

Galaxy class starships are designed to be mobile communities capable of long term, distant deployment, so they're designed for capacity. Other classes of starships are optimized for either research, transport, combat, or some other purpose. For questions of minimum crew required to operate a ship, I suspect most of the estimations we get are the long term estimation. The amount of crew you need in order to just keep the lights on and perform basic operations is probably very small. But when you factor in long term maintenance, the need for sleep and stress relief, and so on, the number becomes much larger.

I've always looked at most Federation starships being built around the philosophy that it's better to have the extra space and not regularly need it, than to one day need the extra space and not have it. I also think the standard complement for a starship can vary from ship, even within the same class.

The Excelsior class ship from that Vulcan sniper (DS9) had 1400 casualties*, didn’t it? * Not all of them may have been standard crew.
EZRI: Science Officer Chu'lak. Age ninety seven. Assigned to Deep Space Nine three months ago. Before that, he served aboard the USS Grissom. JORAN: Why was he transferred? EZRI: The Grissom was destroyed by the Jem'Hadar in the battle of Ricktor Prime. He was one of only six crewmen to survive. JORAN: Six survivors out of a crew of twelve hundred and fifty . The Star Trek Encyclopaedia mostly identifies the second Grissom as being an Oberth -class, same as it's predecessor, however I think the crew complement in "Field of Fire" makes this unlikely. I also think it's unlikely that an Excelsior would have a regular crew larger than a Galaxy . However, Chu'lak's familiarity with the specialist and experimental TR-116 rifle suggests to me that it might have been Special Operations Vessel tasked with supporting defense/combat engineer units like the one on AR-554 and had a few on board?

There are many jobs and duties in Starfleet and on a Starship that could be automated, but simply are not. People need jobs and things to do. While the technology exists to allow the computer to fully pilot a Starship, what would happen to all the people with the desire to pilot ships? Or if Scientific Surveys were left to computers, what would all the Scientists with a passion for exploring and discovery do instead? A ships compliment (Especially in the Star Trek setting) is full of people who want to work and are passionate about what they are doing. With a species as large as the Human population, people need things to do instead of sitting around being lazy. Perhaps it would be different if we were not as plentiful. But look at the numbers in Starfleet, and still how many Billions of people are NOT in Starfleet. This explains why there are such large number of crew on starships in the first place. As for the extra room onboard that is not filled with active crew. Crew onboard ships fluctuate commonly depending on missions and such. While a ship may have a fixed number to operate normally, it may take on several more crew and officers with specialty training to complete specific missions, such as a Planetary Survey or Diplomatic Negotiations. Or perhaps they are transporting an Engineering group somewhere. Most Starships are equipped to allow for Emergency Operations such as Evacuations, or Rescues. And of course, sometimes Crew or Officers simply need to hitch a ride somewhere to their new Assignment. Also, a lot of a Starships 'Emergency' or 'Evacuation' capacity is simply empty storage room such as Cargo Bays that can be used to store extra Materials or Cargo, OR can be converted to house evacuees. The max compliment number does not mean that there are that many full rooms with beds onboard. This is simply how many people or transport a ship may take on at a time, and is not the same as the full crew compliment.

I'm sort of thinking that Kirk's ship was an exceptionally lean and mean type. And that this is the very thing that made her special, in the very limited sense we witness in TOS. A hundred operating crew could probably make any starship sail from A to B and carry a payload of whatever can fit aboard - scientists, troops, cargo, ordnance. On the ships of Lorca or Robau or Sulu, there would be room for lots of payload, in addition to the usual "fixed" things such as a certain basic level of firepower, the ability to construct probes or flintlocks at will in certain decisive numbers, a suite of sensors. But on Kirk's ship, there would be virtually no room, and putting more than four shuttlecraft aboard would be a squeeze, say. Giving Kirk a team of 430 for a rare deep space sortie would then indeed mean "packing them tight", as Dax comments when visiting the past. Giving the same team to Robau would not raise any eyebrows or bruise any elbows, though. Which again makes Kirk special, for enduring hardship compared to the past explorers of wastelands even though their contemporaries lived and traveled in relative luxury. Shamrock Holmes said: ↑ If the evacuation limit is 'do nothing other than get them where the evacuees where they are going' level, what do we think the maximum operating complement would be (example the crew complement of CVN-65 was 3,000, but adding the 1,800 strong Air Wing added to operational capabilities rather than comprimising them, so it's operating complement could be regarded as 5,800), for an Excelsior or a Galaxy ? My guess would be 2,400 to 4,000 for the Excelsior and 3,750 to 6,000 for the Galaxy ? Depending on whether diplomatic, colony, evac, or troops of course. Click to expand...

Timo said: ↑ Would the mass deploying of such probes, or fightercraft or somesuch, require the embarking of extra crew? Or would such missions invariably take precedence so that the crew would actually shrink, with nonessentials left ashore in greater numbers than the incoming pilots? Dedicating a starship to serving as a carrier would seem to limit her freedom of operations quite a lot. Click to expand...
...Apropos, why should civilians be offloaded for a military operation? Supposedly Starfleet is at war 100% of the time (or 923% or whatever, as they are fighting on multiple fronts). Every season of every series, the heroes encounter adventures in which these wars threaten their lives, directly or indirectly. Engaging in a dedicated military operation should only increase the survival odds of the onboard civilians, as for a rare once their ship would be prepared for the inevitable! I mean, these folks are onboard for a reason, in a Starfleet always at war. Supposedly Starfleet benefits from having them. Being "civilians" would mean Starfleet might lack to means to directly force them to stay aboard during military ops, but surely Starfleet would still try its best to bribe them into staying? After all, it's the meek researchers (even if they often are in uniform) who ultimately save the day in Starfleet's many military campaigns. And conversely, if it's the duty of Starfleet to protect the civilians, then keeping them maximally safe aboard the mighty warships sounds like a must. Timo Saloniemi

Investigate activity throughout the Trench, flying to your choice of star systems and encountering random events and challenges along the way. Can be played with any of the three playable ships.

New Ongoing Voyages Mode: Resistance

A Borg Cube is tracking your ship, and you must locate a series of prototype defenses in order to survive your final encounter with it. At every step, the Borg are tracking you and trying to disrupt your efforts. Resistance is a tough challenge mode for dedicated players! Can be played with any of the three playable ships.

New Ship Capabilities

To counter Romulan stealth tactics, the Enterprise D can deploy Proximity Torpedoes; a well-coordinated Bridge Crew can use them like depth charges to neutralize a cloaked enemy. And to hold out against deadly singular threats like the Borg, the Enterprise D also features Shield Modulation and Precision-Fire Phasers.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 5

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.

As both a prequel and sequel to various versions of the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Discovery often includes unexpected easter eggs and references to the entire saga. The latest episode, “Mirrors,” is no exception, as it brings back a famous Star Trek ship, as well as answers questions about a mysterious alien species, which has been around since the 1990s.

From references to the goatee version of Spock, to some deep-cuts from Deep Space Nine , and even a tribble joke, Discovery ’s easter eggs in season 5, episode 5 aren’t messing around. Here are the best references and how these shout-outs solve a few mysteries, while suggesting a possible future development for the next Star Trek show.

“Classic Work on Kellerun”

Early in the episode, Rayner and Burnham talk about which stories are considered classics on the planet Kellerun. Rayner is a member of the Kellerun species, which were established in the DS9 episode “Armageddon Game.” We actually know very little about the Kellerun species, so Discovery is inventing new canon here, rather than referencing anything from previous Trek shows.

Wormhole and the Burn

The wormhole that Book and Burnham have to enter is unstable, which describes most wormholes featured in Star Trek . But, in this case, it’s suggested that the matter/anti-matter reactions in this wormhole were caused by the Burn.

The Burn was that galaxy-changing event in the backstory of Discovery season 3, when, in 3069, every warp core in the galaxy detonated. Warp cores use matter/antimatter reactions to do their thing.

ISS Enterprise

Inside the wormhole, Book and Burnham encounter the ISS Enterprise , and Book says right away “ISS, that’s Mirror Universe.” When he says this we hear the Mirror Universe music from Discovery season 1.

The existence of the ISS Enterprise in this episode is a massive easter egg, which contains various other smaller easter eggs. These include the following:

  • The ISS Enterprise was last seen, in-canon, in the TOS episode “Mirror, Mirror.” So, chronologically, in both our world, and the Trek timeline, this is its second appearance.
  • The bridge and sickbay of the ISS Enterprise are just the sets from the Strange New Worlds version of the Enterprise . Discovery season 5 filmed in between SNW seasons.
  • Several versions of the Terran Empire logo are seen throughout the ship. These match with the Terran Empire logo from Discovery season 1 and season 3, and differ from the logo from The Original Series .
  • Does the redesign make sense in terms of the timeline? Well, Akiva Goldsman has suggested that on some level, the visual canon of Strange New Worlds relative to The Original Series isn’t the true canon. In 2023, he said that the aesthetic choices of the more modern Strange New Worlds don’t change the story as seen on TOS , but it doesn’t mean modern Star Trek will ever reveal a rubber-suited Gorn. “You will never see the Gorn like that…This is the Gorn as we perceive them,” Goldsman said. So, analogously, Discovery didn’t need to make the TOS Mirror Enterprise like the retro 1960s version. Plus, who knows what the Terran Empire did in between “Mirror, Mirror” and the moment this crew escaped?

Mirror Spock

Burnham mentions that the science station on the Enterprise was “my brother’s station.” This, of course, refers to Spock, who, in this universe, did, briefly, work at this exact station. Burnham says, “I’m sure he was just as ruthless as the rest though,” which, as we know, is not true. Mirror Spock spared Prime Kirk in “Mirror, Mirror,” and then became the leader of the entire empire.

In fact, when Book reads the story of this version of the Enterprise , he says, “The Terran High Chancellor was killed for trying to make reforms.” In the Deep Space Nine episode “Crossover,” we learned that the leader of the Terran Empire was Spock. And that Spock trying to reform the Terran Empire led to Earth being taken over in the 24th Century by the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance.

So, the episode references Spock, twice, without actually naming him, and the second time, neither Book nor Burnham even knows that Mirror Spock was a low-key hero.

Saru and the Mirror Universe From Discovery Season 3

Book mentions that the crew of the ISS Enterprise escaped with the help of a “Kelpien slave turned rebel leader.” This seems to reference the events of “Terra Firma Part 2,” from Discovery season 3. In that episode, Georgiou went back into the Mirror Universe and created a kind of pocket timeline in which she died at a different time, and Saru was freed to become a rebel leader. At the time, it wasn’t clear if this changed the timeline of the Mirror Universe — or the timeline of Discovery season 1 — but the mention of a Mirror Saru who is a rebel suggests that some version of that timeline might have occurred after all.

The Breen Revealed!

First mentioned in The Next Generation , the Breen eventually appeared in person in the 1995 Deep Space Nine episode “Indiscretion.” But, from that point, until now, they’ve only appeared inside their suits, and under those helmets. There’s been a ton of speculation for decades about what the Breen look like under their helmets, and now, we’ve finally seen the answer.

In “Mirrors” — during the flashbacks that explains Moll and L’ak’s relationship — we finally see that the Breen have not one face, but two . Apparently, one face exists under their helmet, while another, more stable face can emerge when they have their helmets off. This seems to suggest that the Breen hiding their faces has more to do with a cultural tradition than any environmental requirement. Moll has been running around without a helmet this entire season, and apparently, that’s what a Breen can look like, too.

Smuggling Tribbles

In one of the flashbacks, Moll jokes about making sure she “didn’t smuggle any tribbles on board.” This seems to suggest that yes, even in the 32nd Century , tribbles are still possibly hazardous, because they breed so quickly, and overrun spaceships and space stations. Famously, the tribbles first appeared in the TOS classic, “The Trouble With Tribbles.” Though, in Picard season 3, we did see a genetically engineered “attack tribble” with vicious teeth, stored away in a Section 31 black ops lab. It’s possible this “attack tribble” was created during the Dominion War, which means, it might have been designed to fight the Breen, who were Dominion allies back then.

As Book is navigating the ISS Enterprise out of the wormhole, he says, “Should we hit it?” Book has no idea that “hit it” was Pike’s catchphrase to send a ship into warp. Burnham smiles sheepishly and responds, “Feels weird. Let’s just fly.” She feels weird because she doesn’t want to steal Pike’s catchphrase, and so she uses her own catchphrase, “let’s fly,” instead.

The ISS Enterprise in the Prime Universe

The episode ends with the ISS Enterprise being fully intact in the Prime Universe. We’re told that Detmer and Owo are flying the ship back to Federation HQ on their own. Scotty was able to fly the classic Enterprise with just himself and Sulu in The Search for Spock , so we have to assume that Detmer and Owo have done something similar. We don’t know if a new, 32nd Century Enterprise exists in this era of Star Trek , but as of now, Discovery just brought a classic version of the ship into the future.

Because the upcoming Starfleet Academy series is set in the 32nd Century, it feels possible that Discovery just created a way for the students of future Starfleet to hang out on the bridge of the classic Enterprise — again!

Deploying crew members of the same group , will provide a synergy bonus to the Captain's Maneuver ability, increasing its effectiveness.

Diverse experience provides the most benefit to the Captain. Putting an officer of each class (but of the same group) on the bridge, will grant the maximum synergy bonus.

Best Crews in Star Trek Flee Command

For example, a crew that increases the mining rate of gas is great for mining gas, obviously, but it's not beneficial when it comes to battle.

Additionally, each faction complements the strengths of a certain ship type as follows:

  • Federation : Explorer
  • Klingon : Interceptor
  • Romulan : Battleship

Synergy bonus, as powerful as it is, it's not everything in some cases. There are Officers abilities that work extremely well against a certain type of enemy, or compliment another officer, regardless of their group.

So in that sense, we can't say that there's one crew that's the best at everything. For better or worst, that's not how Star Trek Fleet Command works.

Fighting Hostiles

Pike Moreau crew combination

If you have these two, even at lower levels, you are set, at least when it comes to farming hostiles. Pike and Moreau are the core, but the 3rd member of your crew can be either Chen or T'Laan depending on the enemies you are facing.

But of course, especially as a new player, it's more likely not to have Epic or even Rare officers. In that case, you can go with high level Cadet or Next Gen combinations.

A Next Gen crew would look something like this:

  • Joachim
  • Marla McGivers

Best mining crew combination

  • Barot

These are just some examples of great crew combinations against certain game content. Hopefully, with the information we've provided here, you can figure out on your own which of your available officers are the best for the ships that you have.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 episode 5 ending explained - Mirror Universe starship unveiled?

T he Discovery crew found the missing ISS Enterprise from the Mirror Universe in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 episode 5, which aired on April 27, 2024.

For the unversed, Mirror Universe is an alternate reality where the good United Federation of Planets is swapped out for the brutal Terran Empire. It has been a big deal in Star Trek since it first appeared in the original series.

The appearance of the old ISS Enterprise in this particular episode is noteworthy because it binds the present-day Discovery story to the long-running fan-favorite Mirror Universe.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 episode 5 reveals a derelict Mirror Universe Enterprise

The Discovery gang stumbled upon the Mirror Universe starship stuck in another dimension on Star Trek: Discovery season 5. It was the first time the ship showed up in the universe. Captain Burnham and Booker found an important clue about the Progenitors' treasure, which was hidden in the old Enterprise by a former Terran scientist named Admiral Cho.

The finding of the ISS Enterprise gave fans a peek into what was happening in the Mirror Universe post-original Star Trek series . It also made the audience wonder how the ship wound up in that alternate dimension, considering travel between the Prime and Mirror Universes has been off-limits for ages.

Fans were excited when they saw the famous Mirror Universe starship pop up on the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds sets. It gave the Discovery crew a chance to check out these old-school Star Trek stories in a whole new way. Plus, the clue they found on the abandoned Enterprise opened up a whole can of worms about the Progenitors' tech and what it all means.

Moll and L'ak's desperate mission on Star Trek: Discovery season 5 episode 5

Moll and L'ak are a couple of space criminals who have been causing some trouble for the Discovery crew while searching for the Progenitors' treasure. In the latest episode titled Mirrors , fans learned more about their friendship and motivation. Turns out L'ak is on a mission to find treasure to help out his injured buddy Moll.

Moll is smart and good at planning, and L'ak is secretive and always looking out for her partner. They're like the Bonnie and Clyde of partners, ready to do whatever it takes to get what they want, including in season 5 .

In this episode, Moll and L'ak managed to snag a key clue to finding the Progenitors' treasure before the Discovery crew, which was a game-changer in the hunt for this advanced tech. But things got messy when L'ak got hurt, causing some drama with the Breen that will come back to bite them later.

Culber's spiritual crisis and the Breen's deadly pursuit Star Trek: Discovery season 5 episode 5

In season 5, episode 5 of Star Trek: Discovery , Dr. Hugh Culber goes through a major spiritual crisis when he gets possessed by the Trill scientist Jinaal Bix. This leaves him questioning his existence, and he's counting on the Progenitors' technology to give him some answers.

Culber is feeling conflicted because he thinks he can't talk to his husband, Commander Paul Stamets, about his feelings since they have different viewpoints - Paul is all about science, while Culber is dealing with some deep, unanswerable questions.

Culber goes to Lt. Sylvia Tilly for comfort and talks about the tough choices he might have to make later in the season. At the same time, the episode sets up a future fight between the Discovery crew and the Breen. The Erigah device on L'ak's head warns that trouble is coming and that the two groups might clash.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is available exclusively on Paramount+ .

Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) isn’t thrilled by this prospect, pointing out before she leaves that it’s too dangerous a mission for a captain to undertake. But Burnham disagrees that this is enough of a reason to stop her; it’s a nice reminder that this is a show and a character that originated in the time of James T. Kirk, a time when captains didn’t stay behind in the face of danger.

But it’s not only that, there’s something else going on. Burnham gives Rayner permission to be blunt, quoting a classic work on Rayner’s native Kellerun , The Ballad of Krull , asking him to “serve it without a crumb of ossekat .” (As far as made-up Star Trek idioms go, that’s a pretty good one.)

It’s also the beginning of a sudden and relentless onslaught of references to Rayner’s culture, but more on that later. What’s Rayner’s problem? He’s uncomfortable with the prospect of being left in command of a ship and crew that aren’t “his.” Welcome to being second in command, buddy.

Book and Burnham take off, heading into the wormhole and finding it to be an inhospitable place. They quickly drop out of communication range with Discovery , there’s ship debris everywhere, including the wreckage of Moll and L’ak’s ship…. and what’s that, the  ISS Enterprise ?!

(A side note before we get too excited about that: what is the deal with all the empty space in the new shuttlecraft set, introduced in last season’s “All Is Possible”? The two pilot seats looked like they were crammed into the corner of a huge unfurnished room.)

star trek ship crew

Okay, Enterprise time. Burnham and Book rightly surmise that this is where Moll and L’ak must have escaped to and beam to the ship, which of course turns out to be a redress of the Strange New Worlds  standing sets. A quick scan identifies that no one else is aboard — though the clue, which Moll and L’ak have found, does also have a lifesign, hmm — and that Moll and L’ak are holed up in sickbay. Burnham takes a few moments to ponder her visit to the Mirror Universe back in Season 1 and wonder what the alternate version of her half-brother Spock might have been like (bearded, for one).

And aside from some brief storytelling about Mirror Saru’s role as a rebel leader, that’s about it for the Terran Empire of it all. Star Trek: Discovery has spent plenty of time in and around the Mirror Universe already, and I personally don’t think they need to revisit it again. But introducing the  ISS Enterprise — the ship that started it all with The Original Series ’ “Mirror, Mirror” — and then not doing anything momentous with it? Strange decision, and one that makes it ultimately feel more like this was a way for the show to get to reuse a set on the cheap than it does a materially significant addition to the episode.

In fact, in some ways it’s actually a detriment to the episode. If the action had been set on any other ship it would have been fine, but being on the ISS Enterprise I kept expecting something — like seeing Paul Wesley as Mirror Kirk slinking around, or finding Anson Mount camping it up as Mirror Pike in a personal log. If they’d set the action on a generic derelict ship, what we got wouldn’t have seemed like a let down. As it is though, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop… and it simply never did.

Maybe in a subsequent episode, it’ll turn out that there’s an advantage in having an entire functional starship composed of atoms from another universe at Starfleet’s disposal — or to have a convenient collection of Constitution -class sets available for that Starfleet Academy show to borrow once in a while — but until that happens (if it even does) the use of the ISS Enterprise just seems like a name drop and a “We have to set the action somewhere , why not here?” instead of a significant use of the setting and the huge amount of lore and history that comes with it.

It’s like setting something aboard the Titanic without ever mentioning any icebergs.

star trek ship crew

As Burnham and Book make their way down to sickbay they do find evidence that the ship was being used in a way that seemed unusually gentle for a Terran Empire vessel: signs that children and families were aboard at one time, and that they were the kind of people sentimental enough to have keepsakes and favorite stuffed animals. But again, nothing about this seems like it needs the Mirror Universe connection. Ships of people trying to escape adversity are already a Star Trek staple.

Burnham and Book find Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis) in sickbay, and after a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful attempt at getting them to surrender, everyone starts shooting. Moll and L’ak have a Breen blood bounty — an erigah — on their heads and surrender is simply not an option. During the firefight a lockdown is triggered, forcefields coming down that split the group into pairs: Burnham and L’ak stuck in sickbay, while Book and Moll able to go back to the bridge to try and reset sickbay.

Pairing off also gives Book the opportunity to continue his efforts to connect with Moll, and I have to say, I don’t think I’m a fan. Setting aside the portion of this that’s purely a strategic attempt to forge a connection with someone who is very to keen to kill him, my first reaction to the way Book talks to Moll about her father (and his mentor) was distaste.

I don’t think Book meant it this way, but the way he’s written in these scenes feels unpleasantly close to the “Well, he was a great guy to me , I never saw him do anything bad” response that’s sometimes made to accusations of misconduct. A person can be wonderful to some people in their life and terrible to others; both experiences are true for the people who received them, but they’re not mutually exclusive.

star trek ship crew

Book is preternaturally empathetic, and yet he doesn’t seem to see how continually assuring Moll that her father loved her is an act that’s both unwanted and actively painful for Moll to hear. I understand that Book is just trying to bring a sliver of comfort to Moll – but in the process he’s dismissing her own experiences of her father and his place in her life. Unless Moll asks him for this, it’s really none of Book’s business.

I suspect they’re setting up Moll’s character for a nice, cathartic arc where she comes to terms with her life, forgives her father, releases her past, whatever. And when that happens in real life that’s great — but it doesn’t always, and that’s okay too. If Moll never sees in her father the man Book saw in his mentor, it’s not a character failing. Discovery is really hammering home the theme of confronting one’s past in order to take control of one’s present and future, and I think it would be valuable if they included an example of a character learning to do the latter… without having to be okay with the former.

And to return to a question I posed in my review of “Under the Twin Moons,” I know Book is isolated and excruciatingly lonely after the destruction of Kweijan and his split with Michael, but the weight he’s placed on his relationship with Moll as “the closest thing he has to family” seems like he’s setting himself up for disappointment. Maybe I’m just a cynic, but this does not feel like a hopeful storyline to me. Not everyone wants to be family, and right now it doesn’t seem like Moll’s been given much of a choice in the matter — despite her frequent and very powerful explanations of why she’s not interested.

Clearly frustrated with Book’s topic of conversation and desperate to return to L’ak, Moll makes a reckless decision to brute-force a solution and overload some circuits. It works, and the forcefields in sickbay come down, but it also sends the Enterprise onto an unstoppable collision course with the too-small-to-pass-through and also going-to-be-closing-forever-soon wormhole. They’ve got eight minutes to figure this out.

star trek ship crew

Meanwhile aboard Discovery , we see Rayner’s struggles to interact with the crew. This thread could have gone so many different ways, Rayner seeming “too good” for a temporary command, him seeing this as his chance to do things “better” than Burnham or show how it’s “really done,” but instead the show takes the much more subtle and satisfying route: Rayner is deeply respectful of the captaincy, as a rank and a role, and really doesn’t want to step on Burnham’s authority.

He’s more than willing to disagree with her on command decisions , but he doesn’t question her command . And more personally, he doesn’t want his gruffness and lack of experience with this crew to cause problems. He’s trying, in his own Rayner way, and more importantly he’s succeeding — and, as we see as he shepherds the crew through figuring out how to communicate with and then rescue Book and Burnham, the crew does their part and meets him halfway.

Rayner is learning that he needs to tone down his temperament just enough that he doesn’t come across as an actual asshole to this crew, and the crew is learning that his gruffness isn’t a sign of disrespect but simply a desire to cut to the chase and get to direct, actionable information with a minimum of fluff. There are shades of Nimoy’s Spock or Voyager -era Seven of Nine here, but couched within a distinctly different temperament, and it’s fascinating to watch. I’d love to have seen him interacting with the crew of the Antares , where he presumably felt more comfortable.

The interpersonal stuff with Rayner and the crew is great; where Rayner’s thread feels distractingly like a box being checked is the explosion of “Rayner is a Kellerun!” being shouted from the bulkheads. I could practically hear the writers yelping out a panicked “Oh crap, we forgot to say what kind of alien Rayner is!”

Again, Discovery is back to its old self with the clunky, heavy-handed, and oddly paced character work. Rayner goes from having zero cultural touchstones to having about five in the span of the 15-20 minutes of screentime that his story gets this week. They’re good touchstones, don’t get me wrong — I’m skeptical of Kellerun citrus mash, I have to be honest, but I’d give it a try; not so sure about boiling a cake though — they’re just very present .

star trek ship crew

As with Rayner’s alienness, the frequent flashbacks throughout the episode to Moll and L’ak’s meeting and courtship feel like a “We forgot to explain this and now we’re trying to reference it!” correction. The content of the flashbacks is fine, there’s a lot of interesting Breen worldbuilding for a species that’s been mysterious from the start — and watching Moll and L’ak’s relationship grow from one of mutual convenience to one of true love is genuinely moving. But the way it’s woven into an episode that, again, feels like it’s composed of bits and pieces of storyline, makes it hard to shake the sense that I was watching a To Do list get checked off.

By the time the season is over it might be clear that there was simply no extra room to give a full episode over to Moll and L’ak’s meeting, or maybe an episode without any of the main cast wasn’t something they were willing or contractually able to do, but I would have loved if these flashbacks were pulled out and expanded into a full-length episode of their own. Some of the worldbuilding felt hasty to the point of hindering the emotional beats — at times I wondered if I’d forgotten a whole bunch of Breen lore and at others I was just trying to keep up with what was going on.

For example, my confusion about L’ak’s comment about having two faces, which Moll seemed to completely understand — “Duh, everyone knows the Breen have two faces” — was a distraction in the middle of an otherwise nice and significant moment. This is later clarified as the translucent face and the solid face, but again I was distracted from fully appreciating an interesting bit of Breen culture because I was busy applying what I’d just learned back to the previous scene.

The quickly (and maybe not totally clearly articulated notion) that Breen deliberately restrict themselves to their translucent form for reasons that are entirely to do with avoiding any perception of weakness is a potent if hasty bit of social commentary, and as I said I nearly didn’t catch it.

Whether holding the translucent form requires the armor for protection or the armor necessitates the translucent form — it seems like it would be more comfortable wearing that helmet all the time if you were the texture and consistency of lime jello — this is surely a metaphor for the increasingly rigid, isolating, and emotionally and sometimes physically unhealthy things men in certain circles feel they must do to be appropriately masculine. Seeing L’ak free himself from that rigidity is powerful.

star trek ship crew

With the forcefields in sickbay down, Burnham and L’ak immediately spring into action:  Burnham trying to get the artifact from L’ak and L’ak simply trying to get away. They fight, and Burnham impressively proves she can hold her own against a Breen. When L’ak accidentally falls on his own blade, Burnham grabs the clue and speeds to the bridge where she manages to get a message to Rayner through some tractor beam trickery. The message? Another reference to that classic of Kellerun literature that gives Rayner the info he needs. Hey, did you know Rayner was a Kellerun?

The ISS Enterprise makes it through the wormhole, Moll and L’ak zip away in an escape pod, and it’s time to wrap things up. We head to Red’s for a quick but significant moment between Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Culber (Wilson Cruz), as Tilly offers advice and an ear to a Culber who’s going through a quiet existential – maybe also spiritual? – crisis.

OBSERVATION LOUNGE

  • In addition to the dedication plaques on the bridge, the ISS Enterprise has an additional plaque in its transporter room — one which, despite recounting the heroism of rebel action hero Mirror Saru, still states “Long Live the Empire.”
  • The transporter room plaque is marked with “Stardate 32336.6,” which is about 9 years before the events of “Encounter at Farpoint.”
  • The plaque describes the fate of Mirror Spock, who was killed after instituting the reforms which later led to the fall of the Terran Empire (as described in DS9’s “Crossover”).

star trek ship crew

The full text of the ISS Enterprise transporter room plaque:

The new High Chancellor presented hope and justice as if they were natural to our world. His words, “The light of hope shines through even the darkest of nights” became our rallying cry. He spoke of reform, and changed many of us. But some saw this as weakness. They killed him, and we sought help from an unlikely ally: A Kelpien slave turned rebel leader.   He spoke of visitors from another world… a near perfect mirror cast our darkness into light. With his aid we secured the Enterprise and stayed behind to continue his work. We bear scars from our escape, but our hope remains. May it carry us into a pristine, peaceful, and just future.
  • Not counting L’ak’s previous appearances this season, this episode marks the first time we have seen the Breen in live action since their involvement in the Dominion War in Deep Space Nine.  (The species has appeared in  Star Trek: Lower Decks three times.)
  • The 32nd century Breen wear updated encounter suits clearly based on the designs introduced in  Deep Space Nine ; their digital speech is extremely faithful to the incomprehensible noises Breen soldiers have spoken in past appearances.
  • Given the fact that Moll appears to be just fine in the environment of the Breen ship, I guess Weyoun was right when he said the Breen homeworld was “quite comfortable” in “The Changing Face of Evil.”
  • When L’ak is stabbed he gently oozes some green goo — but as we learned in “In Purgatory’s Shadow,” Breen do not have traditional humanoid blood.

  • During his time in command of Discovery , Rayner never sits in the captain’s chair.
  • This episode closes with a dedication plaque that reads “In loving memory of our friend, Allan ‘Red’ Marceta”. Marceta was, I presume, the namesake for Discovery’s bar.
  • Someone aboard Discovery keeps a Cardassian vole as a pet. Going by Tilly’s reaction, and what we know from  Deep Space Nine , this is not a good thing.
  • Linus (David Benjamin Tomlinson) plays a mean piano.
  • Owosekun and Detmer get the off-screen cherry assignment of flying the ISS Enterprise back to Federation Headquarters, alone. I’m thinking that’s going to inspire some fanfic…

star trek ship crew

We don’t learn what this week’s clue is, though we know there’s a blue vial tucked away inside it, but we do learn that the crew of the ISS Enterprise did indeed make it to our universe. The scientist responsible for hiding this particular clue there was one of them, a Dr. Cho, who eventually made it all the way to branch admiral.

They strove for something positive and succeeded against all odds. Hopefully Discovery will be able to do the same as they continue their pursuit of Moll, L’ak, and the Progenitors.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5 Review: The Crew Solves Two of the Series’ Biggest Mysteries

While on the hunt for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5's powerful alien technology, Captain Michael Burnham solves two decades-old franchise mysteries.

The following contains spoilers from Star Trek: Discovery, Season 5, Episode 5, "Mirrors."

One thing about Star Trek: Discovery fans is they are very observant. The big surprise in Season 5, Episode 5, "Mirrors," was slightly spoiled by the trailers, particularly when these eagle-eyed fans captured and examined screenshots. While the return of the ISS Enterprise after 58 years is a big deal, there is more that happens in the episode than solving an old mystery from Star Trek: The Original Series . However, the answer that Captain Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker uncover is a great one, and fans finally get a long-awaited first look at a mysterious alien species.

After dealing with the Time-Bug in the previous episode , the crew of the USS Discovery tries to figure out where Moll and L'ak disappeared to. While the space criminals have been very capable villains (almost too capable), they're not doing very well in the race. "Mirrors" marks the first time that Moll and L'ak put their hands onto one of the pieces of the Progenitors' puzzle before the Discovery crew. Of course, they aren't able to hold onto it for long after L'ak suffered a serious injury. Still, for the first time, both Burnham and Booker talk to their rivals, approaching them with the kind of compassion that Starfleet is known for. However, they still have to accomplish their mission, and L'ak's determination to be there for Moll gets in the way of any common ground they could've found. Thanks to flashbacks, viewers finally learn why the two are so eager to find this treasure, and where L'ak is coming from.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Continues To Put the USS Discovery in Classic Star Trek Situations

“mirrors” shows the crew rising to meet the challenge in classic star trek fashion, star trek: discovery's callum keith rennie shows a new side of starfleet.

From the lack of galaxy-ending stakes and major interpersonal drama among the crew, Season 5 is Stark Trek: Discovery at its most fun. This episode, in particular, is full of classic Star Trek moments, from forcing enemies to work together to sci-fi technobabble that provides a dramatic resolution to a major problem. The impetus for this race for the Progenitors' technology stems from Star Trek: The Next Generation's "The Chase (Season 6, Episode 20)," but there are major connections to all eras of Gene Roddenberry's universe throughout the season.

While they don't get a lot of screentime, the USS Discovery's crew under Commander Rayner's authority is an equally interesting part of the episode. The recently-demoted captain is hesitant to take full command of the ship in a crisis. In "Jinaal (Season 5, Episode 3)," he took command while Burnham and the away team were down on the surface of Trill. Yet, as far as he knew, their lives and that of the crew weren't in serious danger. His focus was on finding Moll and L'ak, and personally connecting with the crew in 20 words or less. That's not to say that the stoic commander was above some of the series' most emotional beats.

An early scene in the episode, where Captain Burnham tells her new Number One that she believes in him, was subtle but touching . After Rayner showed that he studied Earth customs and sayings, such as "breaking the ice," Burnham returns the favor and cites a historical epic from the Kellerun people. This comes into play when she's able to reference that story later on as a distress call for herself and Book. Instead of badgering the crew, Rayner uses his newfound personal connections (and a friendly offer of Kellerun Citrus Mash) to inspire the crew to solve the problem. This was as classic a Star Trek moment as any, and one longtime franchise fans will surely love.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Reveals the Face of the Breen Imperium Through Moll and L'ak

Star trek fans have wondered what the breen looked like under their armor for decades, star trek: discovery's mary wiseman, wilson cruz and blu del barrio hype finale.

First introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , the Breen Imperium was a galactic seat of power outside of Federation space who allied with the Dominion. The armored aliens look like something out of Star Wars , particularly their helmets, which were reminiscent of Princess Leia's Boussh disguise in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi . The Breen's appearance and who they really were was one of the most enduring mysteries in Star Trek canon. Even the Dominion didn't know what their Breen allies looked like under the armor. Star Trek: Discovery finally reveals the armor keeps their bodies in a translucent, almost liquid-like state. L'ak, as viewers have seen them, are what the Breen call their "other face."

Moll originally teamed up with L'ak to cheat the Imperium out of some faulty dilithium, a commodity that became scarce because of the Burn . They soon fell in love and when L'ak's uncle, the Primarch of the Sixth Fleet, found out, he ordered L'ak to kill Moll. He instead killed his uncle's guards, but spared the Primarch because, as L'ak said, "he raised me." This defiance earned him an "Erigah," a Breen bounty that is impossible to lift. He now hopes that bringing the Progenitors' technology to the Primarch will lift this death sentence.

Moll also bonded with her quasi-brother Cleveland Booker, though he's the fourth to use that name. Her father was the third Booker, which made him desperate to "save" Moll. Knowing that all she really wants is to live a quiet life, "Mirrors" could be the start of Moll and L'ak eventually joining forces with the USS Discovery crew. Captain Burnham is, after all, a big fan of second chances and redemption . If Season 5 is to have a big villainous threat, it will clearly be the Breen trying to collect on L'ak's Erigah, not two petty criminals.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Reveals What Happened to the Mirror Universe Enterprise

The iss enterprise was introduced in star trek: the original series “mirror, mirror (season 2, episode 4)”, star trek: discovery actors doug jones & david ajala prepare for their last adventure.

"Mirrors" also reveals another, older Star Trek secret, specifically the ultimate fate of the ISS Enterprise, formerly under the command of Tiberius Kirk . Previously, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Crossover (Season 2, Episode 23)" revealed what happened to the Mirror Spock and the Terran Empire. He started the revolution that Kirk suggested and was successful in conquering the Terran Empire to usher in galactic peace. Unfortunately, an alliance of Klingons and Cardassians attacked their weakened forces and took over the galaxy -- or at least the sector containing the Cardassian and Bajoran territory. The fate of Spock himself and his flagship was left open for other storytellers to explore.

Star Trek: Discovery still leaves Spock's ultimate fate an open question, though it seems unlikely that he would have fled his universe. His ship, however, became a refugee vessel for Terran reformers who fled, either in the face of Klingon-Cardassian attacks or a resurgence of the Terran Empire's xenophobic and warlike ways . Their goal was to cross over to the Prime Universe, where they knew the universe they hoped to build already existed. Along with Doctor Cho, the Federation scientist who hid the clue, the Mirror version of Saru (who also became a revolutionary) came with them. This placed the crossover sometime in the Kelpien lifespan, but close enough for Doctor Cho to still be alive. The use of the ship at all is mostly fan service, but it doesn't take away from the story's importance.

In Star Trek: Disocovery Season 3, a holographic interrogator told Philippa Georgiou, the former Terran Empress, that there was a subatomic "chimeric strain on the Terran stem cell" which explained their "evil" natures. Georgiou doubted this, and the ISS Enterprise's refugees are more evidence that the Empress was right. The ideal of Star Trek is that anyone welcomed into this utopian society would discover the logic and practicality of Federation morality, and thus abandon their more outdated worldviews. It obviously worked on Dr. Cho, who hid the clue to the Progenitors' technology instead of using it like a Terran out to reshape an ordered universe in their vainglorious image .

Moll & L'ak Are Bigger Wildcards Than Starfleet's 'New' Enterprise

Star trek: discovery season 5 suggests the uss discovery is headed for a confrontation with the breen imperium, star trek: discovery's sonequa martin-green embarks on one final voyage.

Thanks to the crew of the USS Discovery, the Federation is now in possession of a 23rd Century Constitution-class Terran warship. That said, its value is likely little more than that of an ancient relic from the Terran dimension. If anything, the dilithium left in the ship's stores is worth more than the rest of the ship's parts put together. However, one piece of it -- a warp-capable Terran life-support and escape vessel called a warpod -- disappeared with Moll and L'ak inside of it. The Breen's fate is an open question, but Moll will certainly return for the final piece of the puzzle. She doesn't have to solve the clues; she just has to follow Booker.

This episode is the middle point of Star Trek: Discovery 's final season , and the crew are just two pieces away from the full clue device. The race against Moll and L'ak will probably end in three episodes at most, leaving two for a different, more difficult mission. Whether or not L'ak survives, the Erigah placed on his head means that the Breen and the USS Discovery are headed for conflict. It's looking more likely that Star Trek: Discovery is going to go out with a big space battle. Star Trek is a sci-fi action-adventure story, too, which makes episodes like these even more special.

Star Trek: Discovery examines the kinds of big questions that Star Trek is supposed to. A happy ending for some of the "good" Terrans is reminiscent of how Picard brought the Borg into the Federation . In this universe, the heroes don't defeat their enemies; they convince them to become their allies. As Commander Hugh Culber and

Sylvia Tilly discussed in the lounge at the end of "Mirrors," the characters of this universe are essentially going to meet God, and not that phony one on Sha'Ka Ree. The fights ahead will be fun, but the biggest challenge facing Star Trek: Discovery from this episode onwards is making the discovery of the Progenitors' "prize" as meaningful as it needs to be.

Star Trek: Discovery debuts new episodes Thursdays on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Discovery

  • Moll and L'ak get overdue screentime to tell their side of the story.
  • Commander Rayner begins to find his place as a true member of the USS Discovery crew.
  • The fate of Mirror Saru and the other Terrans is good Star Trek storytelling.
  • Moll and L'ak's escape feels convenient, continuing the 'cards-down' approach to their telling story.
  • The use of the ISS Enterprise could reasonably be called 'fan service' because the ship itself means nothing to the characters.
  • The choice to keep the sequences on the ISS Enterprise so dark might be visually unappealing to some viewers.

The USS Discovery (NCC-1031) was a Crossfield -class starship operated by the Federation Starfleet in the 23rd century , initially under the command of Captain Gabriel Lorca and, later, Christopher Pike . ( DIS : " Context Is for Kings ", " What's Past Is Prologue ", " Brother ")

After time traveling to the 32nd century , Discovery underwent a three week retrofit and was recommissioned with the registry NCC-1031-A under the command of Captain Saru , and later Captain Michael Burnham . ( DIS : " Far From Home ", " People of Earth ", " Scavengers ", " That Hope Is You, Part 2 "). Over time, owing to her fusion with the Sphere data , she became a fully fledged artificial intelligence. She experienced emotions, worked with the crew, and chose her own name, Zora . ( DIS : " The Examples ", " Stormy Weather ")

At some point, the ship was abandoned by her crew and remained empty for almost a thousand years. ( ST : " Calypso ")

Service history [ ]

Construction [ ].

The Discovery was built on Earth at the San Francisco Fleet Yards , near the Golden Gate Bridge . Its motto was a quote from Galileo Galilei : " All things can be understood once they are discovered; the point is to discover them. " ( DIS : " Context Is for Kings ", " Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad ", " Face the Strange ")

By November of 2256 , it was still considered impressive and new, fresh out of the shipyards and equipped with some of Starfleet's most advanced technologies, in contrast to the older USS Shenzhou . ( DIS : " Context Is for Kings ")

Discovery Crew 2257

Crew assembled in the shuttlebay, 2257

As a Crossfield -class starship, the Discovery was officially designated a science vessel . In 2256 , the ship had a crew manifest of approximately 136. ( DIS : " Choose Your Pain ") However, by 2257 , following the Federation-Klingon War the complement increased to over two hundred during the investigation of the Red Angel . ( DIS : " The Red Angel ") The ship's facilities were able to accommodate three hundred discrete scientific missions, a Starfleet record at the time. ( DIS : " Context Is for Kings ")

Both the Discovery and its sister ship , the USS Glenn , were equipped with an experimental spore drive for field testing. Much research and refinement remained to be done as of late 2256, but if perfected, it had the potential to instantly traverse vast galactic distances in the blink of an eye. The Discovery only used it in short bursts while attempting to perfect it into a reliable drive system. In contrast, the crew of the Glenn took bolder risks to develop it more quickly, resulting in an accident which killed the entire crew and crippled the ship. ( DIS : " Context Is for Kings ")

The Discovery was built from the ground up to be a test bed for the experimental spore drive, based on the research of Paul Stamets and his colleagues. Stamets had intended his research to pursue purely theoretical knowledge and peaceful applications but, with the outbreak of war, the Discovery was rapidly constructed to perfect the military applications of his research. ( DIS : " The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry ")

USS Discovery in nebula

Due to the top secret , and, in some cases, dangerous research projects being conducted on the Discovery , its internal security was much more rigid and compartmentalized than was regular protocol on Starfleet vessels; breath print identification locks were used to restrict access to different sub-sectors. It also possessed a disproportionately prominent and well-armed security detail, standing guard at various restricted access points throughout the ship. These guards were outfitted with tactical gear bearing a Section 31 "black star" uniform insignia , unlike the normal silver Starfleet delta insignia. ( DIS : " Context Is for Kings ")

Several experiments conducted aboard Discovery had the potential to physically endanger the ship itself and its crew; hazardous situations caused by the black ops experiments being activated were addressed by declaring a " black alert " (which was not a standard protocol on Starfleet vessels). ( DIS : " Context Is for Kings ")

Gabriel Lorca's command [ ]

Federation-klingon war [ ].

Following the outbreak of the Federation-Klingon War , Discovery was placed under the command of Captain Gabriel Lorca and given a clandestine mission to conduct black ops scientific research, developing top secret weapons and technologies that would help the Federation win the war. Discovery rescues SPT 21

Six months into the war, Discovery rescued the prison shuttle SPT 21 from an infestation of Species GS54 during an interstellar storm . Among the prisoners being transported, former Commander Michael Burnham came aboard and was enlisted by Captain Lorca to serve as a specialist aboard Discovery . ( DIS : " Context Is for Kings ")

USS Discovery over Corvan II

Discovery in a defensive position over Corvan II

In November 2256, Discovery received a distress call from Corvan II , under attack by Klingons . The only ship in range, Discovery attempted a spore jump to the Federation mining colony, ending up dangerously close to a star . Utilizing the tardigrade as a conduit through which to navigate the ship, the crew ultimately jumped Discovery to Corvan II in time to destroy the attacking Birds-of-Prey and save the colony from destruction. ( DIS : " The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry ")

The following month, Discovery , under the command of first officer Saru , was tasked by Admiral Katrina Cornwell with the rescue of Lorca following his abduction by the Klingons. Once again using the tardigrade as a living navigational computer , Discovery jumped into Klingon territory, but the creature was disabled in the process. Unwilling to subject the tardigrade to further injury, Lieutenant Stamets injected himself with the creature's DNA, allowing Discovery to recover Lorca and his fellow POW , Ash Tyler , and jump back to Federation space. ( DIS : " Choose Your Pain ")

One week later, Cornwell's cruiser rendezvoused with Discovery before departing for peace talks on Cancri IV . ( DIS : " Lethe ")

Discovery orbits planet

Discovery in orbit of a planet in 2256

On stardate 2136.8, Discovery encountered an injured space-dwelling lifeform known as a gormagander and conducted aid per the Endangered Species Act . This resulted in Harcourt Fenton Mudd boarding Discovery and activating a time crystal , creating a time loop in which Mudd repeatedly destroyed the ship in an effort to learn the secret of the spore drive and sell the ship to the Klingons. The loop was eventually discovered by Stamets, avoiding the permanent destruction of Discovery . ( DIS : " Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad ")

On stardate 1308.9, Discovery engaged a Klingon destroyer in defense of the USS Gagarin . With the advantage of their invisibility screens , the Klingons succeeded in destroying the Gagarin forcing Discovery to withdraw. Discovery then proceeded to the planet Pahvo where it retrieved a landing party as the native Pahvans broadcasted a signal directed at both the Federation and Klingons. ( DIS : " Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum ")

Discovery faces the Klingon Ship of the Dead at Pahvo

Encountering the Ship of the Dead in orbit of Pahvo, Discovery engaged in ship-to-ship combat with the Klingons. Discovery then conducted 133 micro-jumps around the cloaked Klingon vessel, allowing the crew to target and destroy the enemy's capital ship. ( DIS : " Into the Forest I Go ")

The mirror universe [ ]

After an apparent accident with the spore drive propelled Discovery into the mirror universe , it emerged that Lorca was in fact an inhabitant of that universe who had replaced his counterpart and deliberately brought Discovery to his home universe. Following Lorca's revelation, Saru assumed full command of Discovery . ( DIS : " Despite Yourself ", " Vaulting Ambition ", " What's Past Is Prologue ")

USS Discovery flies through Charon

Battling the ISS Charon

In order to return to their universe, Discovery then launched an attack on the Terran flagship, ISS Charon , on stardate 1834.2. Flying through the Terran ship's superstructure, Discovery destroyed the super-mycelial reactor powering the Charon , and used the resulting mycelial shockwave to power the spore drive and cross back into normal space. ( DIS : " Despite Yourself ", " Vaulting Ambition ", " What's Past Is Prologue ")

Return to the war [ ]

Discovery returned nine months after its departure, having overshot its intended destination. In that time, the Klingons had captured a significant proportion of Federation territory. Boarded by a number of Starfleet officials including Vulcan Ambassador Sarek , Discovery was placed under the temporary command of Admiral Cornwell and brought to Starbase 1 , 100 au from Earth. Finding the station overrun by Klingons, Discovery warped away. ( DIS : " What's Past Is Prologue ", " The War Without, The War Within ")

With Klingon forces encroaching on Earth, Starfleet elected to use Discovery to prepare a strike against the Klingon homeworld, Qo'noS , and solicited the abilities of the Terran emperor , Philippa Georgiou . In order to make the jump to the Qo'noS, Discovery traveled to the Veda system where the crew terraformed the moon Delta 2 and replenished their supply of mycelium spores . ( DIS : " The War Without, The War Within ")

USS Discovery in cave

Discovery jumps into a cave on Qo'noS

Under the command of Emperor Georgiou (standing in as the deceased Captain Philippa Georgiou ), Discovery became the first Starfleet vessel to visit the Klingon homeworld since Captain Jonathan Archer and the Enterprise NX-01 visited the planet in 2151 . In order to avoid detection and conflict with Klingon planetary defenses, Discovery jumped into an inactive volcanic cavern large enough to accommodate a Crossfield -class starship beneath the surface of Qo'noS. A landing party to the surface ultimately concluded the mission and brought a peaceful resolution to the conflict. ( DIS : " Will You Take My Hand? ")

With the war over, Discovery returned to Earth, where its senior staff was honored. The starship was then ordered to Vulcan to retrieve its new commanding officer to take Ambassador Sarek home. ( DIS : " Will You Take My Hand? ")

Christopher Pike's command [ ]

Investigating the red bursts [ ].

En route to Vulcan, a priority 1 distress call led Discovery to drop out of warp and respond to the call from Captain Christopher Pike on the USS Enterprise . ( DIS : " Will You Take My Hand? ")

USS Discovery navigates interstellar asteroid

Discovery navigates an interstellar asteroid field

With Enterprise unable to continue its mission – the investigation of one of seven red bursts that were detected across the galaxy; Pike was ordered to assume command of the Discovery from Acting Captain Saru under Starfleet Regulation 19, Section C . Discovery then warped to an interstellar asteroid at the coordinates of the burst, where it located the wreckage of the USS Hiawatha . Unable to maintain shields while transporting survivors from the Hiawatha , the starship suffered severe hull damage from the fragmenting asteroid, before capturing a fragment of the asteroid in its shuttle bay using a gravity simulator . ( DIS : " Brother ")

Donut

Discovery executes a donut in orbit of Terralysium

Detecting a new signal in the Beta Quadrant , Discovery used the previously defunct spore drive to jump to the coordinates, but found no sign of a red burst. Instead, Discovery entered into orbit over Terralysium , a previously unknown Earth colony of World War III -era Humans. With the planet and its population threatened by radioactive asteroids, Helmsman Keyla Detmer piloted Discovery in a donut maneuver, using a dark matter asteroid to magnetically drag the radioactive debris away from the planet. ( DIS : " New Eden ")

Later, a Vulcan cruiser rendezvoused with Discovery , offloading Amanda Grayson . ( DIS : " Point of Light ")

While searching for Spock , Discovery was pulled out of warp by an massive sphere-shaped lifeform . Discovery 's computer system was overloaded by what the crew believed to be a computer virus . Eventually, the Sphere's intentions were discovered and Discovery subsequently became the recipient of a hundred thousand years of the Sphere's knowledge and memories. ( DIS : " An Obol for Charon ")

USS Discovery in the Mycelial network

Discovery jumps partially into the Mycelial network

In order to rescue Sylvia Tilly from the JahSepp , Discovery executed a partial jump into the mycelial plane . The ship was almost instantly attacked by the JahSepp, who began to dissolve the hull. In order to keep from being destroyed, Discovery was assisted by Section 31 chief Leland aboard the NCIA-93 . ( DIS : " Saints of Imperfection ")

Ba'ul sentry ships

Discovery stands off against the Ba'ul

After a red burst appeared over Kaminar , Discovery arrived in the system where it came into conflict with the Ba'ul . Using the Sphere's signal that had triggered vahar'ai in Saru, they helped the Kelpien race evolve beyond the limitations forced on them by the Ba'ul, and opened the way for the two races to somehow coexist. ( DIS : " The Sound of Thunder ")

Control [ ]

The red bursts, as well as an entity associated with it (known by the crew as the " Red Angel "), appeared to be tied to Michael Burnham's foster brother, Lieutenant Spock of the Enterprise , and Section 31 took an interest in capturing him. They caught up to Spock and Burnham on Talos IV , but they were revealed to be illusions projected by the Talosians ; the real Spock and Burnham had escaped to Discovery , which was declared a renegade ship and forced to go on the run. ( DIS : " If Memory Serves ")

The data from the Sphere also included information on artificial intelligence . An AI from the future infected Control , the threat assessment system developed by Section 31, and made it sentient. Control became obsessed with obtaining all of the Sphere's data on artificial intelligence in order to evolve into a true lifeform and wipe out all other sentient life. Discovery 's spore drive operations officer, Lieutenant Commander Airiam , was possessed by Control through her cybernetics, and forced to deliver the Sphere data to Control at Section 31 Headquarters . Airiam was killed and the base destroyed before it could take the entire archive. Before her death, Airiam told her colleagues to find " Project Daedalus ". ( DIS : " Project Daedalus ")

Daedalus proved to be a Section 31 project involving time travel , building a suit capable of taking its wearer through time. The suit matched the description of the Red Angel. The Angel appeared to be connected to Commander Burnham, and she was used as bait to attract it to Essof IV , where the Angel was revealed to be her mother, Dr. Gabrielle Burnham , who was believed killed by the Klingons on Doctari Alpha some two decades before. ( DIS : " The Red Angel ")

Finding that the Sphere data would not allow itself to be deleted from the databanks, the Discovery crew attempted to send the data back to the future with Gabrielle. However, the plan was sabotaged by Leland, who was possessed by Control through nanotechnology ; he destroyed the time crystal in Gabrielle's suit, which was pulled back along with Gabrielle to her anchor point in the future. ( DIS : " Perpetual Infinity ")

Discovery deploys evacuation corridors

The USS Enterprise taking on Discovery 's crew

Discovery continued to investigate the red bursts while keeping ahead of Leland/Control, and detected a fourth signal orbiting the Klingon world of Boreth . There, they obtained a time crystal and began work to create a Daedalus suit of their own in order to take the Sphere data to the future, beyond Control's reach. However, they were surrounded by Section 31's fleet, which was fully under Control's domination. Pike summoned the Enterprise to take on Discovery 's crew before setting the ship to auto-destruct , in an effort to prevent Control from obtaining the Sphere data. ( DIS : " Through the Valley of Shadows ")

USS Enterprise and Discovery battle Section 31

The Enterprise and Discovery engage Section 31 vessels

However, they discovered that the Sphere data would also not allow the ship to be destroyed, leading to a change of plans: To bring Discovery itself into the future, and the data with it. Pike and other essential personnel returned to the ship to investigate a fifth red burst on the planet Xahea , where they welcomed aboard its queen , Me Hani Ika Hali Ka Po , who had developed a dilithium incubator that could be used to charge the time crystal. Discovery began retrofitting its fleet of shuttles and landing pods with enhanced weaponry, joined together with similarly-modified craft from the Enterprise , to combat the Section 31 fleet. At the same time, work continued on preparing the Daedalus suit, to be worn by Burnham, as her mother's DNA was encoded into the suit schematics and she was the closest match. However, it was revealed that it would be a one-way trip, as the energy needed to charge the crystal with Po's incubator would make it unstable. The senior staff all chose to remain with Discovery and make the trip with Burnham. Pike relinquished command of Discovery back to Saru for the journey, and returned to the Enterprise to prepare for the battle to come. ( DIS : " Such Sweet Sorrow ")

USS Discovery leaving the 23rd century

Discovery leaving the 23rd century

After a pitched battle with Control's forces, Burnham successfully opened the wormhole, taking Discovery through with her. Pike, his first officer Una , Spock, and acting Section 31 chief Tyler all reported to Starfleet Command that Discovery was destroyed with all hands. Spock furthermore recommended that in order to prevent such incidents with Section 31 from happening again, that all participants in the event were to be barred from talking about Discovery , her crew, or her spore drive under penalty of treason . ( DIS : " Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 ")

In 2259 , Captain Christopher Pike wore a USS Discovery pin for Starfleet Remembrance Day . ( SNW : " Memento Mori ")

In 2383 , Hologram Janeway showed the young crew of the USS Protostar an image of the Discovery while explaining the history of the Federation and Starfleet to them. ( PRO : " Starstruck ")

Saru's command [ ]

Arriving in the 32nd century [ ].

Upon exiting from the wormhole in 3189 , Discovery crash-landed on an ice planet known simply as " The Colony ". It was eventually rescued by Michael Burnham who had arrived in the future a year earlier. ( DIS : " Far From Home ")

After Discovery arrived in the 32nd century , shipboard computer developments caused some crewmembers such as Captain Saru to develop a theory that the integration of the vast quantities of Sphere data, central to their journey into the future, had prompted the development of a self aware protective instinct among the ship's computer systems. ( DIS : " Forget Me Not ")

NCC-1031-A

At Federation Headquarters , Discovery underwent a three-week retrofit, with all of her systems being upgraded on par with 32nd century technology. Part of this refit included the installation of programmable matter into all stations for better control and converting her warp engines to be detached for improved maneuverability and performance. During the refit, the ship was recommissioned with the registry NCC-1031-A. The change of registry was to also hide the fact that Discovery travelled through time, as time travel was outlawed after the Temporal Wars.

Adira Tal also included an upgrade to the spore drive reaction cube as well as converting the physical injector shunts into nanogel control interfaces.

At the same time, her mission orders were that of a rapid response craft based out of Federation Headquarters due to the unique nature of her spore drive. ( DIS : " Die Trying ", " Scavengers ")

As part of its refit, Discovery was equipped with a cloaking device , the turbolifts didn't run on tracks anymore, they hovered, and the systems hub section was upgraded. ( DIS : " Su'Kal ")

A holodeck was also among the renovations included in the refit. ( DIS : " All In ")

USS Discovery hijacked by the emerald chain

Discovery hijacked by the Emerald Chain

The Discovery was eventually hijacked by Osyraa and her Emerald Chain forces who used the ship to reach Federation Headquarters. ( DIS : " Su'Kal ", " There Is A Tide... ") During the battle that followed, Burnham killed Osyraa, reset the computer to its previous operating system and retook the ship. Discovery 's warp core was then ejected and detonated in order to destroy the Emerald Chain flagship Viridian while Discovery herself spore jumped away using Cleveland Booker 's empathic abilities in the absence of Paul Stamets .

Michael Burnham's command [ ]

Following the resolution of the crisis, Michael Burnham was promoted to captain of Discovery while Saru took Su'Kal home. The ship was then assigned to transport dilithium to various Federation worlds. ( DIS : " That Hope Is You, Part 2 ")

USS Discovery in the domain of Species 10-C

Discovery enters the domain of Species 10-C

With the threat of the Dark Matter Anomaly , Discovery was assigned to travel beyond the galactic barrier and make first contact with Species 10-C , bringing along a number of diplomatic representatives including the Federation President and the President of Ni'Var . The mission left the spore drive burned out, stranding the ship decades away from Earth at warp speed. However, the crew succeeded in convincing the 10-C to shut down the DMA just in time to save Ni'Var and United Earth and Titan from destruction. Before the 10-C shut down the DMA completely, they used the wormhole to return the Discovery to Earth. ( DIS : " The Galactic Barrier ", " Rosetta ", " Species Ten-C ", " Coming Home ")

Discovery one thousand years after its abandonment

At some point, the ship reverted to her pre-refit appearance and was abandoned by her crew . Discovery remained empty for almost a thousand years, when Craft came aboard. The ship's computer was under orders to maintain her position. ( ST : " Calypso ")

Merge with Sphere data and sentience [ ]

After Discovery 's encounter with the sphere-shaped lifeform and its subsequent downloading of its millennia worth of information, the data seemed to have a mind of its own. ( DIS : " An Obol for Charon ") It was repeatedly said to be "protecting itself", preventing its own deletion, not allowing the ship to self-destruct, and even raising the ship's shields when the USS Enterprise tried to destroy it with a photon torpedo in one possible timeline. ( DIS : " Perpetual Infinity ", " Such Sweet Sorrow ") It combined with Discovery 's systems in 3189 , and the computer's voice changed to signify this. Her first act that stretched the bonds of a normal computer was holding a movie night for the crew. ( DIS : " Forget Me Not "). When Osyraa hijacked Discovery , the Sphere data transferred itself to the DOT-23s , which then helped the crew of Discovery take back the ship. Most notably of her actions during that time, she rescued Owosekun from death by oxygen deprivation. ( DIS : " Su'Kal ", " There Is A Tide... ", " That Hope Is You, Part 2 ")

Zora's avatar

Zora's holographic avatar

By the 32nd century, the computer AI had assumed the name Zora . ( DIS : " Anomaly (DIS) ") A relatively short period of time after that, she had developed emotions. ( DIS : " The Examples ") She worked with the crew of the Discovery on a personal level to escape a subspace rift, struggling with the task due to having to manage her new emotions. ( DIS : " Stormy Weather ")

Alternate timelines [ ]

In an alternate timeline shown to Burnham by the time crystal , Control , in the body of Leland , successfully eliminated the Discovery bridge crew during the Battle near Xahea and took control of the ship and the Sphere data. However, after Burnham warned the crew of what she saw, they were able to alter the future with Control simply heading off to find the Sphere data after a brief engagement on the bridge. ( DIS : " Such Sweet Sorrow ", " Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 ")

In another alternate timeline, Discovery was abandoned and nearly wrecked near the debris field of the USS Federation . When Burnham and Commander Rayner arrived on this Discovery in 3218 from a time jump, they found the ship covered in dust and only Zora left who had lost most of her memory. Zora revealed that Discovery had been rescued from its time cycling by Starfleet too late to stop Moll and L'ak from finding the Progenitors technology and selling it to the Breen who had destroyed the Federation and killed everyone, including Discovery 's crew. Zora helped the two figure out the pattern of the time cycling and begged them to make things right before Burnham and Rayner were sent to another time period. This future was averted when Burnham, Rayner and Paul Stamets , with the help of the Discovery crew of an alternate 2256 , stopped the time cycling six hours after it began. ( DIS : " Face the Strange ")

In an alternate timeline, Burnham, Rayner and Stamets enlisted the help of the Discovery crew of 2256 to break the ship's time cycling, revealing to them details of the future in the process. The bridge crew aided in the process by breaking the warp bubble at maximum warp after Burnham revealed her personal knowledge of each of them, particularly of Airiam 's death. In engineering, Rayner used his personal knowledge of Gen Rhys and Burnham -- who had already encountered her future self -- to convince them both to stand down. This timeline was erased when the time bug was removed before it could reset the cycle again as the changes made in each time period wouldn't become permanent until the bug reset. ( DIS : " Face the Strange ")

Embarked craft [ ]

Discovery carried a complement of Class C shuttlecraft and worker bees in its shuttlebay . In 2257, the shuttlecraft were upgraded with enhanced phasers in preparation for battle with a Control -led Section 31 fleet. ( DIS : " Context Is for Kings ", " Such Sweet Sorrow ")

Discovery also carried four landing pods , first developed for a mission to Kim-Tara , though two were destroyed in 2257. ( DIS : " Brother ")

List of First contacts [ ]

Over its four years of service, the Discovery made first contact with the following species:

  • Pahvans , 2256 ( DIS : " Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum ")
  • Species 10-C , 3190 ( DIS : " Species Ten-C ")

Background information [ ]

Bryan Fuller chose the Discovery 's registry number, 1031, because he loves Halloween . [1]

Before the show premiered, Aaron Harberts described the ship as "the latest and greatest ship to roll off the assembly line" ( SFX , issue 292, p. 80)

The set used for the Discovery 's interior was a reused set which, with just a few changes, had previously served as the interiors of the USS Shenzhou and the USS Glenn . ( AT : " Context Is for Kings ")

In " Choose Your Pain ", Saru , while commanding the ship, says he has 134 souls to protect, strongly hinting at the size of the ship's crew. The statement is made while captain Lorca and the shuttle pilot are off-ship, one episode after Ellen Landry is killed, and before Ash Tyler joins the crew, suggesting the complement is 136 at that time.

Apocrypha [ ]

USS Discovery appears in Star Trek Online in an ending cutscene for the players taking the "Discovery" route, where it mentions the crew and the special mission Discovery was to undertake. Later, in the mission "The Measure of Morality", Discovery is again mentioned when the player comes in contact with Michael Burnham. In that scene, it is mentioned that the Discovery was lost with all hands at some point in the past.

(SOUNDBITE OF ALEXANDER COURAGE'S "THEME FROM STAR TREK")

LEILA FADEL, HOST:

Good morning. I'm Leila Fadel.

The long-lost original model of the USS Enterprise, the one that could be seen in the opening credits of the TV show "Star Trek," has been returned. Missing since the 1970s, the model popped up on eBay last fall. The seller eventually took down the item and helped facilitate its return to Rod Roddenberry, the son of the late "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry. Roddenberry, the son, says he now hopes to get the model into a museum for the public to enjoy.

It's MORNING EDITION.
