Mikumi Park (NP) is a 1,247 sq. mile park in south central Tanzania. Located within the north of the Selous Game Reserve in the Morogoro region, it is bordered by Uluguru Mountains in the North and Rubeho Mountains to the south-east

It is also common to see lions and sometimes giraffes and leopards along the Tanzania-Zambia highway, especially in the evening or night. 

In the two pools north of Mikumi’s main park gate, hippos are frequently joined by flocks of open-billed storks and other waterbirds. 

The surrounding mountains and hills bring compelling natural beauty with addition to superb light, making it a wonderful venue for wildlife photographers. Zebra, wildebeest, impala and buffalo can be found on the grassy plains.

Mikumi National Park is located in the Morogoro region of Tanzania, covering an area of 3,230 square kilometers. The park is intersected by the Tanzanian A-7 highway. This highway divides the park into two distinct environments and landscapes, making Mikumi National Park quite unique. One of the most interesting aspects of Mikumi National Park is the presence of a subspecies of giraffes, which biologists and scientists suggest may be a link between the reticulated giraffe and Masai giraffe.

The vast plains and abundant wildlife in Mikumi National Park have often led to comparisons with the famous Serengeti National Park. The southeast area of the park is often inaccessible to tourists. Mikumi National Park has become a perfect weekend getaway from Dar es Salaam, as it’s the nearest park to the city. It’s an ideal destination for travelers with busy schedules who still want to explore wildlife, even with limited time. The word “Mikumi” is derived from a popular palm tree dominant in the park.

The Uluguru mountain ranges rise to an elevation of 2,630 meters above sea level. These mountains derive their name from the Luguru tribe living around the mountain slopes. The Uluguru mountains are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains in East Africa. They are home to six amphibian species found nowhere else in the world, four species of reptiles, 100 species of plants, several bird species, and mammals. Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park is one of Africa’s largest national parks, covering an area of 30,893 square kilometers. It is located in the southeastern part of Tanzania. The area was first gazetted as a professional hunting area by a German Governor of Tanganyika in 1896. The reserve was later renamed after a big game hunter named Frederick Selous, who later became a conservationist. In 2019, Selous Game Reserve was upgraded to a national park, and the name was changed to Nyerere National Park in honor of the first Tanzanian president, Julius Nyerere.

Nyerere National Park is unspoiled and pristine compared to other national parks in the country. The park is renowned for its population of wild dogs. During game drives, tourists can see wildlife such as lions, zebras, hippos, rhinos, giraffes, wildebeests, African wolves, hyenas, buffalos, crocodiles, impalas, greater kudus, cheetahs, and elephants, to mention a few.

The best time for birding is November to April.

Nyerere National Park can be reached by road from Dar es Salaam or Arusha town. The distance and time it takes to reach the park will depend on the route and gate you choose to use. The park can also be accessed by air from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar to Nyerere National Park, but there are several airstrips in the park, so you should choose one near your accommodation.

our safari in Mikumi began with a drive from Dar es Salaam, the bustling coastal metropolis of Tanzania. As you travel inland, the urban landscape gradually gave way to the open countryside. The journey to Mikumi is around a 5-6 hour drive, but the time passes quickly as you’re swept away by the anticipation of what lies ahead.

As you arrive to the park, check into Vuma Tented Camp, a comfortable accommodation strategically situated with a view of the vast savannah. After a quick, refreshing lunch, you will set for a first game drive in various areas in the park including the Mkata Flood plains. This plains is nicknamed as the little Serengeti due to its rich wildlife and stunning landscapes.  Herds of elephants, buffallos, zebras and varied species of antelopes are just some of the animals that can be spotted on Mikumi safari

The Mikumi National Park is the nineth largest national park in Tanzania bordering the Selous Game Reserve to form a vital component of a much larger ecosystem in Africa. This park is accessible throughout the year which makes it a favored choice for short safaris.

As the sun began to set, the sky turned into a canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples. Our guide found a safe spot to stop, and we watched in silence as the sun dipped below the horizon – a perfect ending to the first day of our Safari in Mikumi.

Back at the lodge, dinner was served under a canopy of stars. The night sky in Mikumi is free from light pollution, offering a celestial spectacle that is truly humbling. We retired early, excited for the full day of safari that awaited us.

Day 2: Full-Day Safari in Mikumi National Park

A safari in Mikumi is best at dawn when the park awakens. With the first light, you will set out to catch the nocturnal predators before they retreated from the daylight. The early morning is also an excellent time for bird watching, and Mikumi hosts over 400 bird species, including the bateleur eagle, lilac-breasted roller, and the yellow-throated longclaw.

If lucky during game drive you will see large cats such as lions and leopard. Mikumi is famous for tree climbing lions.

As the day warmed up, you will stop at a designated picnic site. It’s a surreal experience to have lunch in the company of giraffes and elephants that might wander close to the area. However, it’s important to remember that these are wild animals, and maintaining a respectful distance is essential for safety.

After lunch, continue with Mikumi safari afternoon game drive to see the hippos. Watch these colossal creatures interact in their aquatic environment is fascinating. Your  guide will share insights into their behavior and the ecosystem of the river, making the experience both educational and entertaining.

As the day came to a close, you will return to the lodge. Spend the evening of your Mikumi Safari sharing stories of your favorite moments and encounters. The peacefulness of the park at night, with the occasional call of a hyena or roar of a lion, was an evocative soundtrack to our reflections.

Day 3: Walking Safari in Mikumi and Departure

On the final day of your safari in Mikumi national park you will embark on a morning guided walking safari which will give you a chance to experience the bush from a different perspective. Accompanied by an armed ranger, you will learn about the smaller flora and fauna that are often overlooked during game drives. The ranger’s knowledge about medicinal plants, insects, and the interconnectivity of the ecosystem added depth to your safari in Mikumi and the understanding of the savannah.

After some few hours in the bush you will return to the camp for breakfast or branch and after that you will depart the park for the journey back to Dar es Salaam.

Often skipped over by tourists who visit Tanzania, Mikumi National Park sees only a small fraction of the Tanzanian stars of the Serengeti, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater, and the island of Zanzibar.

Conveniently located about 5 hours drive from the capital of Dar es Salaam, Mikumi National Parks makes for a great weekend escape from the city. For road trippers, Mikumi is the perfect stop to break up the journey between Dar and Iringa.

Why Visit Mikumi?

Mikumi is known amongst safari-lovers for its bountiful wildlife, home to 4 of the African Big 5 (sorry, no rhinos here). More so, Mikumi National Park is known for its staggering array of small game and bird species. Over 400 different types of birds can be spotted here.

It should be no surprise that Mikumi offers the array of wildlife it does, the national park is contiguous with the Selous Game Reserve, the largest by land size in all of Africa.

A unique feature of Mikumi is their elephants, which tend to be noticeably smaller than other African elephants with much shorter tusks, making them less attractive to poachers.

Another great reason to head to Mikumi is that it is very much off the beaten path Tanzania. The park only gets a small fraction of the visitors who travel to Tanzania each year, compared to the 200,000 tourists that visit Serengeti National Park annually.

While the Serengeti is most definitely worth a visit, you won’t be dealing with the crowds (which we all know some can be quite obnoxious) here at Mikumi National Park. 

Finally, as mentioned before, Mikumi is conveniently located and quite easy to get to. A 5 hour drive along the A7 Highway that connects Tanzania and neighboring Zambia will bring you to Mikumi from the big city of Dar es Salaam. The A7 also connects Iringa and Mikumi in about 4 hours. 

How To Get To Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park is pretty easy to reach independently. Even for those short on time, you’ll pass through a part of the park along the A7 (if this is the case, keep your eyes peeled as you will almost certainly see some wildlife from the highway. The A7 will also give you epic views of the Udzungwa Mountains en route.

The drive will take around 5 hours to reach the town of Mikumi that is located about 15 kilometers outside the West Mikumi Gate. You can either opt to stay in Mikumi town and make trips into the park or plan to go camp in the park as part of your safari.

Busses make the haul from Dar es Salaam to the town of Mikumi daily. Good companies to book with include Sumry, Scandanavia, and Mbeya Express. 

It is recommended to make your bus booking at least a day in advance. Your accommodation in Mikumi (and likely in Dar as well) can make your bus reservations for you, all they need is a copy of your passport so there is no need to visit the bus station twice.

Mikumi-bound busses depart from Ubungo Station which is located about 11 kilometers northwest of the Dar es Salaam city center. Know that traffic in Dar can be hellacious and it can take 2 hours to make it across the city, so factor that in to make it in time for your departure. You can expect the journey from Ubungo Station to Mikumi by bus to take around 6 hours.

This is by far the easiest as your safari operator will arrange everything for you. Most Mikumi National Park safari companies will either pick you up on arrival at Dar es Salaam Airport or from your accommodation in Dar.

Entrance fees to Mikumi National Park are $30 USD for foreigners per day and $15 per day for children 5-15 years. Residents pay $15 for park entry and resident children are $5 per day. Mikumi National Park fees are payable upon entry.

The Best Time To Visit Mikumi National Park

June to October is the best time to visit Mikumi as well as the remainder of southern Tanzania as it corresponds with the dry season. This is when skies are the clearest and wildlife is the easiest to spot.

The wet season falls from November to May, making wildlife viewing a bit more difficult, though birding is prime at this time. April and May are typically the worst and wettest months to visit Mikumi, but the park is still accessible even then.

Things To Do In Mikumi National Park

The main appeal to visiting Mikumi is for wildlife viewing. You can book packaged safaris that include transfers easily in advance or from Dar es Salaam.

For the DIY-style travelers out there, you can easily arrange a Mikumi safari from the town of Mikumi on arrival. Ask your accommodation in Mikumi to help you arrange a safari to get the best price. If you book a safari in advance of your arrival, you can expect prices to be a bit higher, around is $200-400 per day. 

There are walking safaris on offer in Mikumi National Park, which are quite a unique experience (I’ve gotten to do one in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia and highly recommend going on one at least once). Walking safaris in Mikumi start at about $20 USD for four hours.

Where To Stay In Mikumi National Park

There are two public campgrounds within the boundaries of Mikumi National Park. You’ll need to of course have your own tent and gear if you aren’t on a package safari. Campsites run $30 per night.

Vuma Hills  offers 16 beautiful fully furnished tents inside Mikumi National Park. The tent camp remains open year-round. Tents start around $150 per night including full-board, game safari packages that include your tent, full-board and 2 game drives start at $250 per person per night. 

Stanley’s Kopje Camp

Stanley’s Kopje Camp  safari camp can only be booked as part of a safari package given the difficulties of reaching the camp. The camp consists of 12 fully furnished tents located atop a kopje (small hill). Rates run $350-500 per night.

Flora and fauna

The landscape of Mikumi is often compared to that of the Serengeti. The road that crosses the park divides it into two areas with partially distinct environments. The area north-west is characterized by the alluvial plain of the river basin Mkata . The vegetation of this area consists of savannahdotted with acacia, baobab, tamarinds, and some rare palm. In this area, at the furthest from the road, there are spectacular rock formations of the mountains Rubeho and Uluguru. The southeast part of the park is less rich in wildlife, and not very accessible.

The fauna includes many species characteristic of the African savannah. According to local guides at Mikumi, chances of seeing a lion who climbs a tree trunk is larger than in Manyara. Other animals in the park are elephants, zebras, impala, eland, kudu, black antelope, baboons, wildebeests and buffaloes. At about 5 km from the north of the park, there are two artificial pools inhabited by hippos. More than 400 different species of birds also inhabit the park.

The Mikumi belongs to the circuit of the wildlife parks of Tanzania, less visited by international tourists and better protected from the environmental point of view. Most of the routes that cross the Mikumi proceed in the direction of the  Ruaha National Park  and the Selous Game Reserve . The recommended season for visiting the park is the dry season between May and November, warm weather and beautiful sites that are a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The 3,230-square-kilometre Mikumi National Park, effectively a northern extension of the vast Selous Game Reserve, protects a combination of grassy floodplains and wooded hills flanked by the Uluguru and Udzungwa Mountains to the north and south. The park’s main game-viewing circuit crosses the expansive Mkata Floodplain, an area of open grassland interspersed with stands of acacia, Borassus and baobab trees. Referred to locally as the mini-Serengeti, the plains support large numbers of elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and antelope, including wildebeest, impala, reedbuck and eland. Lions and spotted hyenas are present in reasonable numbers – if you don’t see them by day you’ll certainly hear them at night.

Mikumi national park is one of the protected areas that are found in the Southern part of the country. Its located not far from the shores of Indian ocean, it the park was established in 1964. It began as a small game reserve till 1975 when more land from both South and Northern sides were added in to the park. The most famous mountains are the  Uluguru Mountains  that are found on the Eastern part of the Park. In the West and the north you find the Mazunyungu hills, Madzini hills and Mbesera hills. Its unique surrounding by the mountains and the hills has given more reflection of light to the park that gives good scenic and fabulous color and light around the park. The views of the sunset and sunrise are good especially if you hike to the top of any hill or mountain and observe the sun rise or sun set.

Mikumi national park has diversified ecosystem that is further more divided by the rod that runs across the park. The road separates the park in to two sections one is North West and the other is South East. Both sides have different ecosystem with little in common for example the north West its dominated by the open alluvial plains that are characterized by more Acacia trees and the large Boababs tree. The North West is more like the Tarangire National park and here in this region you get more African Elephants. Mikumi National Park

Swirls of opaque mist hide the advancing dawn. The first shafts of sun colour the fluffy grass heads rippling across the plain in a russet halo. A herd of zebras, confident in their camouflage at this predatory hour, pose like ballerinas, heads aligned and stripes mergingin flowing motion.

Mikumi National Park abuts the northern border of Africa’s biggest game reserve – the Selous – and is transected by the surfaced road between Dar es Salaam and Iringa. It is thus the most accessible part of a 75,000 square kilometre (47,000 square mile) tract of wilderness that stretches east almost as far as the Indian Ocean.

The open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain, the popular centrepiece of Mikumi, draw frequent comparisons to the more famous Serengeti Plains. Lions survey their grassy kingdom – and the zebra, wildebeest, impala and buffalo herds that migrate across it – from the     flattened tops of termite mounds, or sometimes, during the rains, from perches high in the trees. Giraffes forage in the isolated acacia stands that fringe the Mkata River, islets of shade favoured also by Mikumi’s elephants.

Criss-crossed by a good circuit of game-viewing roads, the Mkata Floodplain is perhaps the most reliable place in Tanzania for sightings of the powerful eland, the world’s largest antelope. The equally impressive greater kudu and sable antelope haunt the miombo-covered foothills of the mountains that rise from the park’s borders. More than 400 bird species have been recorded, with such colourful common residents as the lilac-breasted roller, yellow-throated long claw and bateleur eagle joined by a host of European migrants during the rainy season. Hippos are the star attraction of the pair of pools situated 5km north of the main entrance gate, supported by an ever-changing cast of waterbirds.

The History

Established in 1964, the original area of Mikumi National Park was 1,070 km2 but was later expanded in 1975 to encompass 3,230 km2, making it the ninth largest national park in Tanzania. It is a crucial part of a vast ecosystem in the region, along with Nyerere National Park (Selous), and serves as a refuge for a variety of wildlife, such as elephants, buffalos, wild dogs, and zebras.

“Mikumi National Park is a wonderful place to go looking for animals. There’s a very good chance that while you’re here you might see elephant, buffalo, impala, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe and hippo. Of the big cats, lion is the easiest to see, with some large prides in the park, while leopard is also a possibility. The park also has some other species that might be difficult to find elsewhere. These could include eland, greater kudu (with its extravagantly horned males), sable antelope and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest. Mikumi is also an outstanding birding destination, with over 400 different species having been recorded in the park. If you’re here between November and April, you’ll see lots of migratory species that spend these months in the park.”

How many days do I need for a Mikumi safari from Dar es Salaam?

“The ideal minimum for a Mikumi safari from Dar es Salaam is 3 days. A 3-day safari will mean that you travel on day 1 from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi and return (or continue your onward journey elsewhere) on day 3. This leaves you with 1 full day and 2 nights (and around 2 half days) in the park. This is enough time for at least four game drives at the best time of day: early morning and late afternoon, when the animals are at their most active and easiest to see. You could make a 2-day Mikumi trip from Dar es Salaam work, but this would mean you have only 1 night to enjoy the park (and probably only time for two game drives). You could, of course, add extra days. Any extra time you can spare will repay you many times over with more wildlife encounters and a richer, less hurried safari experience.”

Is it recommended to drive or fly from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi?

“You can fly or drive from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi, and each has its own pros and cons. The advantage of flying is that you get there quickly, leaving you more time to enjoy exploring Mikumi, rather than traveling to get there. This is especially an issue when your safari is short and you’re eager to maximize time spent looking for animals. Another benefit of flying is that an air transfer becomes a scenic flight, and you get some fabulous views on the way in and out. The major downside of flying is the cost: an air transfer is rarely conducive to a cheap or more affordable safari. If you drive, you’ll get to see more of the country up close, with the possibility of meeting more locals on your trip across the country.”

How long does it take to get from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi?

“If you’re flying between Mikumi and Dar es Salaam, your flight should take no more than an hour. The only exception to this is that some flights travel a loop that takes in other parks (e.g. Nyerere National Park, formerly Selous Game Reserve, and Ruaha National Park), and the flight could end up taking longer if Mikumi turns out to be a later stop on the plane’s daily itinerary. You also need to factor in all the time you’ll spend at Dar es Salaam’s airport checking in and waiting for your flight to depart. Even with all of these things to consider, flying will almost always be quicker than driving. To drive from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi takes around four hours. Remember, however, that Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s largest and busiest city, and traffic can be a problem. On days of peak traffic, it could take an hour just to get out of the city, before you even begin the 300km/186mi trip from Dar to the park.”

“It might be possible to find budget camping tours for your Mikumi safari from Dar es Salaam for around US$100 to US$150 per person per day. For this price, you’ll be traveling by road (as opposed to flying) and you may need to help around camp with tasks such as putting up and taking down tents, cooking and washing up. Fly-in safari packages could start at around US$350 to US$400 per person per day. It could also cost significantly more than this if you pay for luxury accommodation, travel in high season (June to October) and choose a private safari (where you pay to have the guide, driver and vehicle just for you) instead of a group safari. Mikumi national park is the fourth largest national park in Tanzania located in between the Uluguru mountains, Lumango range, western part of dare s salaam, north of the famous Selous game reserve and.
