Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova Review

Dave Ozzy

I’d call myself a mid-level trekkie (loved Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, can’t get into Discovery or Picard), but I’m now questioning that label thanks to Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova. Honestly, I had no idea that Star Trek Prodigy, the TV series that this game is based on, even existed. But it’s there, squirreled away on Paramount+ and aimed at younger viewers. I hang my head in shame and hand in my Starfleet lapel pin.

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is the latest game to come from the collaboration between Paramount+ and Outright Games, a deal that has already produced Dreamworks Dragons: Legends of the Nine Realms . It’s also the twenty-millionth game that Outright seem to have unleashed in the past few months, having furnished the holiday period with L.O.L Surprise! B.B.s BORN TO TRAVEL , PAW Patrol: Grand Prix and the previously mentioned Dragons game, among DLC to their other games. But rather than spreading themselves thin, Outright Games are onto something of a quality run. And Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova, rather than bringing the run to a screeching halt, keeps it going.

star trek prodigy supernova review 1

It’s the age-old tale of a starship crash-landing on a planet about to be subsumed by a supernova. Even more thrillingly, the crew of said starship has been teleported out, willy-nilly, across various planets before the crash. It leaves you, Dal R’El and Gwyndala, racing against time to save the crew, fix the Starship Protostar, and yeet out of the system before everyone becomes stardust. But that’s not all! This system has been enslaved by an old nemesis of yours, and they’re harvesting the planets for as much energy as they can before it’s not there anymore.

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova attempts to straddle the grown-up themes of conventional Star Trek, and the attention levels of your average teen, and it gets there, just about. We’re personally not fans of the Marvel-like tone, with everyone quipping like there’s no tomorrow, defusing any potential drama by joking about it (the simmering romance also makes us wince), but there’s a surprising epicness to proceedings, and the themes of slavery and isolationism are a little heavier than you might have expected. It’s actually too talky, in our view, pausing the action too often when we wanted a greater flow. But it’s far from poor quality.

What this is welded onto is an adventure-puzzle game that reminds us a little of Lara Croft: Temple of Osiris , the zoomed out, co-op take on the Tomb Raider universe. Like that game, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is unashamedly co-op, to the point that playing it solo feels like you are losing something of the experience. When playing alone, you are constantly tapping B to switch to the other player, when there’s a much greater energy and flow that comes from playing together. If you can find another trekkie, it’s the optimum way to play.

It also shares Temple of Osiris’s viewpoint and mix of combat and puzzling. Roughly one-third of Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is fighting, which feels about right: Star Trek has always liked a wrestling match with a Gorn, but it’s predominantly cerebral, and so it goes. We expected the combat to be slight and repetitive, and – you know what – it really does knock it out of the park. We’re not talking Devil May Cry here, but there’s substance that we really didn’t expect.

star trek prodigy supernova review 2

Much of the strategy comes from whether you fight close-quarters or at range. The Watchers, the game’s one and only enemy, swarm you, and the latter parts of the game become a firework display of grenades, lasers, charging attacks and explosive death rattles. You’re always on the move, switching between the two attack types, and even switching characters in single-player, as both Dal R’El and Gwyndala have their specialisms. Negotiating this chaos is great fun, and – while there are safety nets in the form of revives and extra life points – it can get pretty challenging. We found ourselves hitting the deck more times than we expected.

But the real reason we like the combat is the choice of weapons. There are three per character, and they are decently inventive and pack quite the punch. Our favourite was a phaser rifle that would absolutely leather the enemies, and we’d swing it round at speed like we were playing a twin-stick shooter. But, equally, there are power-fists that Gwyndala uses that can be charged by holding X, leaping over enemies, or a lance that cuts through Watchers like metallic butter. A lot of work has gone into making these punchy, and it’s time well spent. There’s more heft to the combat than it has any right to have.

Which makes it all the more bewildering that upgrading your combat abilities is so slimline. It’s a bit arse, really, and could have added another dimension with very little work at all. At various points in the campaign, you are arbitrarily told that a weapon can be upgraded. There are three levels of upgrade, and they just dink up the speed or strength. Slightly better are some holodeck challenges that improve your crewmate powers (an automatically triggered effect that deals AOE damage), but those crewmate powers were poor to start off with, and we often forgot they were there.

star trek prodigy supernova review 3

Away from combat, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova expects you to think. As you move through chunky, lovingly realised environments, you are often confronted with laser walls and blocked corridors. You are stuck, and your aim is to become unstuck. Often, this means utilising the two characters’ skillsets. Dal R’El can lift up fallen pillars, allowing Gwyndala to duck underneath, or he can don a camouflage suit and escape the view of cameras. Gwyndala, meanwhile, has a disturbing arm-tentacle ability that can create a bridge for Dal R’El. Helping each other through the levels is one flavour of the cooperation.

The other is blocks. Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova absolutely loves a cube: enough that we expected it to feature in the title somewhere. There are heavy blocks, light-emitting blocks, teleporting blocks and switch blocks. There are small blocks and big blocks. You push them, drop them off cliffs, drop them onto switches or teleport them across an arena. This is all in the name of environmental puzzles, and, by golly, there is an endless number of them in Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova.

Now, your reaction to this may differ. The puzzles are supremely well designed: they escalate in difficulty, and no layout is the same as another. They wring every last drop out of cube-based puzzling. But there is an opportunity for fatigue here, and we can imagine teenage trekkies with their Vulcan ears on, slamming down the pad and huffing off to their bedroom, cursing the ‘sodding blocks’. We love a good Sokoban-puzzler , and even we were starting to get sick of all the similar puzzles. Heaven knows what Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova will feel like for players who like combat, but couldn’t give a flying tribble for puzzles.

More so than perhaps any Outright Games title that we’ve played, there is a deal of substance to Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova. Levels can run to thirty minutes in length, and there are plentiful secrets to find in nooks and crannies (although we’d have opted for an upgrade system that better used them). You’re looking at close to ten hours of gameplay here, particularly if you are chasing medals for strong performance in the level. And Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova needed to be substantial: it’s an expensive little title, coming to £44.99 – a world of prices that no Outright Game has ever gone before.

star trek prodigy supernova review 4

Is Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova worth that outlay? Yes, but with some directives. One, bring a second-in-command. This has been designed from the ground up for two players. Two, prepare yourselves for long bouts of puzzling. This isn’t the action-packed romp that you might expect. And three, fans of the series are going to get so much more from the experience. For our part, the goofy dialogue had us wrinkling our nose so much that we looked like a Klingon.

We expected Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova to arrive in a red shirt, virtually dead on arrival. Instead, we’ve got a game with substance and style, and there’s nothing more Star Trek than that.

RECAP | Star Trek: Prodigy - Supernova, Part 1

Surrounded by the Federation armada, the crew attempts to stop their ship from destroying all of Starfleet.

Profile view of Dal and Gwyn looking ahead of them at the viewfinder on Star Trek: Prodigy

StarTrek.com

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains story details and plot points for Episode 19 of Star Trek: Prodigy "Supernova, Part 1."

The penultimate episode of Star Trek: Prodigy ’s first season, “Supernova, Part 1” begins with Vice Admiral Janeway arguing with her guard, informing them of the devastating weapon aboard the Protostar . If she isn’t able to warn Starfleet, then the entire fleet could be destroyed.

Dal informs the Protostar crew that, unfortunately, he may have tarnished Janeway’s reputation, and it’s unclear if she’ll be able to help. Aboard the Dauntless , Commander Tysess and Ensign Asencia are explaining the situation to an irritated Admiral Jellico. He approves Asencia’s plan to send a boarding party onto the Protostar .

Ronny Cox as Admiral Jellico in Star Trek: Prodigy

As the Dauntless opens fire on the Protostar to take down its shields, Zero figures out how to essentially hotwire the ship. They have controls back, but they can’t go anywhere until the protodrive comes back online. They redirect power to boost the shields and make evasive maneuvers.

Rok almost spills the beans to Dal about his augment status, which prohibits him from joining Starfleet Academy. Gwyn realizes that’s not what he needs right now and redirects the conversation. Dal needs to be in command, full of confidence, and Gwyn gives him that. The crew works together beautifully, a testament to how far they’ve come since they first boarded the Protostar .

At the conn, Gwyn looks over her shoulder on Star Trek: Prodigy

Aboard the Dauntless , Janeway’s guard reveals that she has a history with the admiral. Years ago, she was one of the telepathic Brenari refugees the then-captain protected and transported across space on the starship Voyager in the Delta Quadrant (seen in Star Trek: Voyager episode “Counterpoint”). Because of that experience, she trusts the admiral and lets her out of the Brig.

The fight is tense, and Gwyn decides it’s time to take a different tactic; she goes to arm herself. Dal follows, trying to convince her that diplomacy might still work. She is unconvinced, but as she’s trying to tell him about his augment status keeping him out of Starfleet, he interrupts her and kisses her.

Dal backtracks with his hands up on Star Trek: Prodigy

She’s taken aback, and Dal backpedals. She then proceeds to tell Dal the truth — Starfleet won’t accept him because he’s an augment. Just then the shields go down on the Protostar . Warp and engines are offline.

Dal has a decision to make about what to do next. He does what’s best for his crew; they all deserve to belong somewhere. He may never be able to join Starfleet, but he’ll make sure his people still have a fighting chance.

Asencia (The Vindicator) in her true form walks ahead of The Diviner and Drednok on Star Trek: Prodigy

Meanwhile, the boarding party on the Dauntless is getting ready to head over to the Protostar . Asencia reveals her true Vau N’Akat form as The Vindicator, incapacitates the boarding party, and beams over to the Protostar with The Diviner and Drednok. She orders the enforcer to eliminate anyone who gets in their way, but The Diviner asks Drednok to spare Gwyn.

Dal orders everyone to take up arms and seals the bridge, leaving it in Gwyn’s hands. The Diviner and Asencia are able to get past them, and Asencia uses her Starfleet access to disable Holo-Janeway while Gwyn watches and hides. Drednok is keeping the rest of the crew very busy.

Dal stands firm holding his phaser beside Zero with Murf, Rok-Tahk, and Jankom Pog behind the pair on Star Trek: Prodigy

Gwyn locks her father below the Bridge deck with the Living Construct and challenges Asencia. Asencia does not have the qualms The Diviner has about killing his progeny and fights her. She defeats Gwyn and is about to kill her when The Diviner escapes. He tries to kill Asencia, but she turns the tables on him and stabs him with the heirloom weapon.

Just as Asencia opens a channel to the fleet, Vice Admiral Janeway arrives on the Bridge of the Dauntless . She orders Tysess not to answer the hail, but she’s too late. The Vindicator appears on their viewscreen as the Living Construct spreads across all the ships in the area. Shields are down and the ships fire upon one another.

Rok-Tahk lies on top of Jankom Pog as they look at an orb on Star Trek: Prodigy

Thanks to Drednok, the entire crew is restrained, but Rok-Tahk refuses to let this be the end. Thanks to her ingenuity, they manage to escape and confront Asencia. She uses Drednok as a lifepod and busts right through the ship’s hull. Luckily, automatic systems kick in; the breach is sealed with a forcefield.

The Diviner is dying, and he asks Gwyn to save their people — to find a way to unify them. She tells him she doesn’t know how, but he reassures her he believes in her before passing. The Protostar crew tries to take stock of the situation, but the Living Construct deactivates the universal translator. Just like on Tars Lamora, they aren't able to communicate with or understand one another.

A concerned Protostar crew and Holo-Janeway look out the viewfinder on Star Trek: Prodigy

On the Dauntless , things aren’t looking any better. Janeway orders the crew to abandon ship, but the crew can’t understand her. The situation has somehow gotten worse, but there’s a bright spot. Gwyn learned multiple languages in order to create conflict on Tars Lamora; now she can use that same ability to bridge the divide between everyone.

Now that the Living Construct has been unleashed, the Dauntless and Protostar can communicate. Vice Admiral Janeway reaches out and Dal responds. Together, they come up with a new plan — non-Starfleet ships won’t be affected by the Living Construct, which means they needs to call in some allies. Without the universal translator, she can’t do it; but Gwyn and the Protostar can. Gwyn takes command of the Protostar, and, as the fleet tears itself apart, asks the Klingons for help.

On the Protostar, Dal and Gwyn communicate with a Klingon Bird of Prey on the viewscreen on Star Trek: Prodigy

The admiral begins evacuating the Dauntless , but the Bridge is targeted. Without shields, there’s no hope. Janeway braces for an impact that never comes as a Klingon Bird-of-Prey takes the hit.

As more non-Federation ships warp in to help, the universal translators come back online. But there’s bad news — when under attack, the fleet automatically sends out an SOS, which means more Starfleet ships are coming in to help, resulting in more infections and destruction. The Protostar crew realizes that they can’t stop this, and they’re watching Starfleet be destroyed before their eyes.

Summary [ ]

On the bridge of the USS Dauntless , Commander Tysess speaks to Admiral Edward Jellico who questions why Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway was declared medically unfit when she seemed perfectly fine when he spoke with her earlier. Jellico (after an advisement from Asencia ) orders Tysess to take down the USS Protostar 's shields and board that ship.

Meanwhile, the Protostar crew finds itself face to face with an armada of Starfleet ships but unable to open a hail because that would trigger the living construct weapon. Soon, Zero regains control of the ship by "hotwiring" it. Weaving in between the ships of the armada, the Protostar is able to evade "enemy" fire. Dal R'El tries to encourage the crew by saying they'll all laugh about this when they're at Starfleet Academy . Gwyn , discreetly, stops Rok-Tahk from telling Dal that he won't be able to join.

Unfortunately, their shields drop and Gwyn goes to the armory to get weapons to use against the boarding party . However, Dal stops her, arguing that firing against Starfleet officers will look bad on her Academy application. Gwyn begins to break the news to Dal but he misreads the situation and impulsively kisses her. Surprised, Gwyn asks what he's doing and then breaks the news that he won't be able to join Starfleet because of the Augment ban. Stunned for a moment, he takes her weapon, and says that, while he might not be able to join, he's going to make sure the others have the opportunity.

On the Dauntless , Admiral Janeway tries to convince the ensign standing guard outside the brig that Starfleet is in imminent danger. When Janeway tells the guard that she can be trusted, the officer turns around and says that she knows she can. The ensign tells Janeway that, nine years earlier , when she was a child , she was one of the twelve Brenari refugees that USS Voyager hid from the Devore and had sent through a wormhole in the Delta Quadrant . The ensign is only alive now because of Janeway's actions. The officer releases Janeway who rushes to the bridge.

Meanwhile, Asencia enters the transporter room , immobilize the boarding party and, with the assistance of The Diviner and Drednok , transport to the Protostar themselves. On the Protostar , Drednok overpowers the kids, except for Gwyn who is on the bridge, with a gravity mine which makes them unable to move. When Murf tries to stop Drednok by attacking him, Drednock literally freezes him.

At the same time, Asencia and the Diviner make it to the bridge where they find Gwyn. Asencia immediately disables Hologram Janeway , and concerned about his loyalty to his daughter, locks the Diviner in the subdeck with the Living Construct. Armed with her own Vau N'Akat heirloom , she engages Gwyn in a vicious sword fight. Though Gwyn is able to land a blow that leaves a scar on Asencia's face, Asencia gets the upper hand, while calling Gwyn a "mistake that shouldn't exist".

Suddenly, the Diviner escapes from the subdeck and Asencia uses Gwyn as a hostage to control him. However, he uses his mind to send Gwyn’s heirloom towards Asencia's face. Unfortunately, she catches it and throws it straight into his abdomen, landing a fatal blow. Gwyn cradles her father as he dies and evaporates around her.

Still pinned down, Rok, who had fallen on top of Jankom Pog , engages in some quick thinking and uses his multi-mitt torch to melt a frozen Murf, who frees Zero from the energy disrupter, leaving Zero able to free Dal who knocks the gravity mine away. They all rush to the bridge just in time to watch the Vindicator escape using Drednok as an escape pod . Unfortunately, before her escape, she sends out a hail – thus activating the living construct.

On the Dauntless , Janeway makes it to the bridge but it's too late – the entire armada has begun firing at one another. At the same time, it seems the universal translator has also been knocked out, not only on the Protostar , but for the entire armada. Luckily, Gwyn knows several languages and, after comforting a frightened Rok and Jankom, contacts the admiral to volunteer as a translator for the fleet.

On the Protostar , Dal suggests that, since the living construct only affects Starfleet vessels, they ask others for help. Hologram Janeway echoes that, stating that thre may be some non-Starfleet allies who might be willing to lend a hand. Gwyn sends out a distress call and successfully contacts a Klingon captain named Trij , who agrees to render aid. Soon, other ships arrive, including a Petarian bulk freighter , a Ferengi D'Kora -class Marauder, a Vulcan Suurok -class vessel, and a Gorn trading vessel , that attempt to deflect phaser and torpedo blasts so that Starfleet personnel can be beamed off the ships.

Unfortunately, since Starfleet vessels automatically send out distress calls when they are under attack, more and more Starfleet vessels begin arriving at the scene.

Memorable quotes [ ]

" Jankom calls that maneuver the Slippery Dipsy-Doodle! " " Great work! Except for that name! "

" Starfleet left my people to tear ourselves apart. And now, I will watch your Federation do the same. "

" …They've lost control of their ships, and it won't stop until Starfleet destroys themselves. I am requesting your aid in our immediate assistance, and help relaying this message to all our non-Federation allies. We beg you. Your transports, your freights, your shields. Anything that will slow the attack Starfleet is inflicting upon itself. " " And why should I help? " " Because in the infinite of space, everyone needs to know there is a place out there willing to accept us all, no matter how different we think we are. Without Starfleet, the Federation crumbles, and that dream dies with it. If they've ever helped you as they helped us, then hear my words. Allies, civilians, outsiders, anyone. Starfleet needs you now, or it will not survive. "

" There's nothing we can do. We can't warp away; we can't stop the signal. It's annihilation. "

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova Walkthrough

Screen Rant

Star trek: discovery's mirror universe enterprise was cool, but also missed 3 opportunities.

The appearance of the ISS Enterprise was a nice surprise, but Star Trek: Discovery could have done more with the Mirror Universe ship.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5 - "Mirrors"

  • It was a missed opportunity for Mirror Universe legacy characters like Spock or Kirk to make an appearance in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5.
  • Burnham's reflection on the ISS Enterprise could have tied back to her time in the Mirror Universe with Georgiou.
  • The story of ISS Enterprise's escape from the Mirror Universe teases a powerful rebellion and hope narrative.

Star Trek: Discovery brought back the ISS Enterprise that was introduced in the classic Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "Mirror, Mirror," but the show could've done so much more with the Mirror Universe version of Star Trek's most iconic ship. In its fifth and final season, Star Trek: Discovery has sent its characters on an intergalactic treasure hunt centuries in the making. In their search for the powerful technology of the Progenitors, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew have already faced numerous trials, and their most recent clue took them to a relic from the 23rd century.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 , "Mirrors," written by Johanna Lee and Carlos Cisco and directed by Jen McGowan, Captain Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) must enter interdimensional space in search of the next clue on their quest to find the Progenitors' technology. After Burnham and Booker make it into the wormhole, they find the heavily damaged, but still intact ISS Enterprise. As they search the ship, they discover that refugees used the Enterprise to escape from the brutal Mirror Universe in search of a better life. While it was certainly fascinating to learn more about the ISS Enterprise and its journey, the appearance of the centuries-old ship could have had more of an impact.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

The iss enterprise provided the perfect excuse for a strange new worlds cameo, michael could've found a recording from mirror universe spock or kirk..

As Captain Burnham and Cleveland Booker explore the bridge of the ISS Enterprise, Michael gets emotional looking at what would have been her brother, Spock's (Ethan Peck), terminal. While this is a nice moment, it would have been a great opportunity to include a recorded message from Mirror Universe Spock or someone else who was on board the ship. Not only would it have been fun to see Ethan Peck with Mirror Spock's goatee, but it could have been a nice moment for Michael to see an alternate version of her brother.

It's a missed opportunity that no Star Trek legacy characters made an appearance in "Mirrors."

Whether due to budget constraints or scheduling conflicts, it's a shame that Star Trek: Discovery did not get Ethan Peck or Paul Wesley, who plays Lt. James T. Kirk on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , to make a quick cameo. Seeing the Mirror Universe Captain Kirk would have been a nice way to shout out Star Trek: The Original Series , while also connecting Discovery to Strange New Worlds . Star Trek: Discovery has shown recordings of legacy characters before, such using old footage of Leonard Nimoy's Spock in the Discovery season 3 episode "Unification III", and it's a missed opportunity that no Star Trek legacy characters made an appearance in "Mirrors."

The ISS Enterprise Should've Reminded Burnham Of Her Time In The Mirror Universe With Georgiou

Didn't all of the mirror universe iconography remind burnham of her experiences there.

While Captain Burnham did have a moment of reflection regarding Spock, she never mentioned the time she spent in the Mirror Universe or her connection with Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) . The Mirror Universe played a major role in Star Trek: Discovery season 1, and Burnham spent a fair amount of time there. Michael also grew close to Georgiou after she traveled back with the USS Discovery to Star Trek 's Prime Universe. It stands to reason that Michael would likely have been reminded of her time in the Mirror Universe as she was exploring the ISS Enterprise.

Two of Star Trek's best modern villains, Emperor Georgiou and Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs), came from the Mirror Universe. Michelle Yeoh will reprise the role of Georgiou in the upcoming Star Trek: Section 31.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4 , "Face the Strange" revisited several moments from Captain Burnham's past, but didn't touch on the Mirror Universe. Allowing Michael to have a moment of remembrance on the ISS Enterprise would have been a nice connection to season 1 and another way to show how far Burnham has come. Whether or not Burnham has spoken with Book about her experiences in the Mirror Universe, she could have shared a memory of her time with Georgiou. Discovery season 5 already has a lot going on, but they missed out on what could have been a nice moment of reflection for Captain Burnham.

Star Trek 10’s Best Mirror Universe Variants

Star trek should tell the story of the iss enterprise's escape from the mirror universe, discovery teases what could be a powerful story of rebellion and hope..

One of the most interesting aspects of the ISS Enterprise is the story of how the ship ended up in interdimensional space in the first place. After Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) visited the Mirror Universe in Star Trek: The Original Series, he inspired Spock to initiate a series of reforms to prevent the Terran Empire from falling. Unfortunately, the Empire fell anyway, but some people took Spock's ideas to heart and rebelled against the new regime. After "a Kelpian slave turned rebel leader" — aka Mirror Universe Saru (Doug Jones) — told others about the Prime Universe, they began searching for a way to get there.

Star Trek: Discovery could have done more with the ISS Enterprise, but at least they turned the former warship into a symbol of hope.

The ISS Enterprise became a lifeboat, as Saru helped refugees steal the ship and take it to the Prime Universe. Book reads their story from a plaque on the wall, but it sounds like a tale that deserves more than a few sentences of dialogue. The story of a group of rebels who steal the Enterprise, ride it into another universe, and then have to adapt to an entirely different way of life would make a great movie or mini-series. Star Trek: Discovery could have done more with the ISS Enterprise, but at least they turned the former warship into a symbol of hope.

Guide to Watching the Babylon 5 Series in Order

The renowned “Babylon 5” universe, crafted by J. Michael Straczynski, started with a two-hour TV pilot titled “Babylon 5: The Gathering”, which debuted on February 22, 1993. The show’s history is checkered with controversy, notably involving allegations of story elements being similarly explored by Paramount’s “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”. These two series ultimately came to be appreciated on their own merits, each garnering a distinctive following despite their concurrent presence on television.

The “Babylon 5” series officially launched in January 1994, a year after the pilot, and has since amassed a rich collection of spin-offs, movies, and additional media. Below, we at /Film have compiled a comprehensive guide to experiencing all the film media within this franchise in the right sequence.

Order by Release Date

When exploring the Babylon 5 landscape, it’s recommended to view the content in its release order. The main TV series is interspersed with TV movies, and we’ve marked the series in bold.

  • “Babylon 5: The Gathering” (1993) – TV Movie
  • “Babylon 5,” seasons 1-4 (January 26, 1994 to October 27, 1997) – TV series
  • “Babylon 5: In the Beginning” (January 4, 1998) – TV movie
  • “Babylon 5,” season 5, episodes 1-17 (January 21, 1998 to June 17, 1998) – TV series
  • “Babylon 5: Thirdspace” (July 19, 1998) – TV movie
  • “Babylon 5,” season 5, episodes 18 and 19 (October 28, 1998 and November 4, 1998) – TV series
  • “Babylon 5: The River of Souls” (November 8, 1998) – TV movie
  • “Babylon 5,” season 5, episodes 20-22 (November 11, 1998 – November 25, 1998) – TV series
  • “Babylon 5: A Call to Arms” (1999) – TV movie
  • “Crusade” (June 9 – September 1, 1999) – TV series
  • “Babylon 5: The Legend of the Rangers: To Live and Die in Starlight” (January 19, 2002) – TV movie
  • “Babylon 5: The Lost Tales” (2006) – Straight-to-video anthology special
  • “Babylon 5: The Road Home” (2023) – Straight-to-video movie

The franchise’s abundant universe also includes novels, comics, and games. Plans for a series reboot have also been discussed by Straczynski, who is currently searching for a production partner.

Mythology-Based Viewing Order

Engaging with the Babylon series in the intended sequence is pivotal for reaping the intricate narrative benefits. The storyline, set aboard the Babylon 5 space station—a hub for galactic diplomacy—features complex inter-species politics, and genuine mythic prophecy. Unlike the utopian vibe of “Star Trek”, “Babylon 5” never shies away from depicting a tumultuous human and alien society.

Viewers must acclimate themselves to various in-world conflicts such as the Shadow War and the Telepath War, while also recognizing the significant differences between “Babylon 5” and “Star Trek”. Notably, some “Star Trek” actors, including Walter Koenig, have notably made their appearances in the “Babylon 5” universe.

What is the first piece of media I should watch in the Babylon 5 franchise?

Begin with “Babylon 5: The Gathering”, which is the original TV movie pilot that aired in 1993.

Do I need to follow the release order to understand the Babylon 5 series?

While it’s not mandatory, following the release order will provide a coherent understanding of the evolving storytelling and mythos.

Can I watch “Babylon 5” without having knowledge of “Star Trek”?

Absolutely. Despite similarities and historical controversy, “Babylon 5” stands as a separate entity with its own distinct narrative and universe.

Are there other materials in the “Babylon 5” universe besides the series and movies?

Yes, the universe also includes novels, comic books, and board games, contributing to the richness of the Babylon 5 storyline.

Exploring the “Babylon 5” universe involves delving into an expanse of intricate narratives that flourished independently of the “Star Trek” juggernaut. This guide to the ordered experience of the Babylon franchise is designed to optimize your journey through the complex and politically rich space opera. Whether you are new to this universe or revisiting it, the correct viewing order will amplify the epic storytelling that makes “Babylon 5” a unique and compelling saga in the realm of science fiction.

This new supernova, the brightest in years, could help astronomers forecast future star explosions

Astronomers spot over 20,000 supernovas every year, but this one stands out.

A stellar explosion in the Pinwheel Galaxy is the closest observed in five years.

A new supernova has turned into the most watched phenomenon in the May night sky. The close proximity of the stellar explosion and the vast amount of observations gathered since the discovery promise to advance astronomers' understanding of stellar evolution and could even lead to major advances in supernova forecasting.

Supernovas are powerful explosions in which very massive stars, at least eight times more massive than our sun , die when they use up all the hydrogen fuel in their cores. The discovery of this latest exploding star, known officially as 2023ifx, was a serendipitous one.

When amateur astronomer Koichi Itagaki settled in his amateur observatory in the mountains near Yamagata City in northern Japan on the night of May 19, little did he know that his nightly scan of the nearby galaxies would produce an astronomical sensation. Itagaki , a CEO of a food company, is no novice in the supernova business. In fact, he is one of the world's most prolific amateur supernova hunters and has over 170 supernova discoveries under his belt, according to Scientific American .

That's why when Itagaki turned his telescope to the Pinwheel Galaxy, a popular target among amateur astronomers located some 21 million light-years from Earth , it didn't take long for him to realize that he was witnessing something significant.

Related: This new supernova is the closest to Earth in a decade. It's visible in the night sky right now.

Since Itagaki reported the observation to the International Astronomical Union that night, the brightening star in the Pinwheel Galaxy has become the most studied object in the night sky. Both the world's largest scientific telescopes and amateur skywatchers around the globe have turned their lenses toward the freshly exploded star , which has since been declared the nearest supernova explosion in the last five years. The event's close proximity to Earth is only one part of its scientific appeal.

Daniel Perley, an astrophysicist at Liverpool John Moores University, told Space.com that thanks to the large quantity of available observations of the galaxy taken by both amateurs and professionals, astronomers might be able to pin down the exact moment of the explosion to within minutes.

Get the Space.com Newsletter

Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!

"Usually, when a supernova is found, it's already a day, two days, three days, even a week after the explosion when we first see it," Perley said. "This one was found within hours of the actual initial explosion of the star, and we may even be able to get that down to a few minutes after we collect some of the amateur data that people have been incidentally taking of the galaxy. So it's going to be possible to get very, very nice constraints on exactly the moment of explosion. And that's unusual."

With today's technology, supernova detections are not rare. According to Cardiff University astrophysicist Cosimo Inserra, powerful survey telescopes find several supernovas every night. Within a single year, more than 22,000 so-called transient events, sudden powerful brightenings in galaxies, can be discovered. This number includes supernovas, but also stars shredded by black holes .

"On average, the distance of the majority of these transients is up to redshift 0.1," Inserra said. "That's between 0.7 to 1.5 Giga light-years [a Giga light year equals to a billion light years]."

When such an explosion goes off in the neighborhood of our galaxy, the Milky Way ,  astronomers can detect it before it reaches its maximum brightness, monitor it for a longer period of time, but also make measurements that are not possible for the more distant explosions.

a spiral galaxy in deep space with a bright flash of light on one of its arms

"When it's nearby, we can get the entire electromagnetic spectrum of information, which our telescopes usually cannot detect in the far away objects because the signal is so faint," Inserra said. "The full electromagnetic spectrum has only been detected for a few [supernovas]. And with this one, because it's so bright, we already have X-ray information, optical and near infrared."

Different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum — the different wavelengths of radiation emitted by objects in the universe — reveal different types of information about their sources. Inserra hopes that the measurements of supernova 2023ifx will reveal the chemical composition of the material blasted out by the collapsed star. This, in turn, could help advance our understanding of the chemical evolution of the universe, revealing how the dust dispersed from blown-up stars forms future generations of stars throughout the cosmos.

The observations will also improve the understanding of the evolution of stars themselves, particularly the changes they undergo in the final stages of their lives, added Perley.

"The important thing is to understand the nature of the star that exploded," said Perley. "If we can see if the star had some variable activity before the explosion, that would be a major development."

According to Inserra, astronomers can tell which stars are in the final stages of their lives but have no way to tell whether the star is going to go supernova in a million years from now or tomorrow.

Astronomers are already scouring data from the Hubble Space Telescope to learn more about the so-called progenitor star that gave rise to 2023ifx.

In the meantime, the stellar explosion that captivated the astronomical community may be reaching its peak brightness. But it will remain visible with backyard telescopes for months to come. Inserra expects that professional astronomers will be studying the event's aftermath for years.
