Stockholm offers a rich history, nordic culture, extensive parks, lakes and water sports, and international cuisine. Most locals speak fluent English, and getting around is easy by walking or using public transport.

It is one of the most friendly and global cities in the world, proud of its rich Swedish heritage, history, and traditions. 

Swedes like to work hard and play hard. Five weeks of vacation per year is standard, with July being the most popular month to make the most of the long, light summer days and nights. It may be expensive, but not more so than other major cities such as London or New York.

In this article, we look at how to explore the city before starting your cruise from Stockholm with a 3-day guide including travel info, tips, and itineraries.

Visiting Stockholm, you will discover an exciting mix of old and new. Starting in the ancient city (Gamla Stan), it is easy to find your way around (pick up a street map from your hotel concierge).

Transport options from stockholm arlanda airport to the city center.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport is a modern, well-planned airport with many shops and amenities. It’s well-signposted in Swedish and English and generally very easy to get around.

Here are the transport options from Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) to your city center hotel, which is about 40 km from the airport.

Private transfer

The fastest and most efficient way of getting to your accommodation is to book a private transfer . Your driver will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with your name written on a sign. This is, however, the most expensive form of transportation. Expect to pay around 1500 sek, but the price may vary depending on how many you travel together.

Airport coaches leave every 10-15 minutes and take you to Stockholms Central Station (City Terminal). These airport coaches are called Flygbussarna . A one-way ticket costs about 120 sek per person, and the journey is around 45 minutes.

Airport Express Train

The Arlanda express train , accessible from all terminals, is located under the airport and is very convenient, with a journey time of just 18 minutes.

Follow the yellow “Arlanda Express” signs at the airport. These are posted both on the walls and the floors. You can purchase tickets at the yellow ticket machines with a credit card.

One of their counters is in the baggage hall at terminal 5, and you can also ask for help at the Swedavia Arlanda Visitors Center.

The cost of a one-way adult fare is around 300 sek per person. 

Taxi stands are outside of all terminals. Check the price with your driver before you depart. A one-way journey from the airport to the center of Stockholm will be roughly 400 sek.

Always get a receipt at the end of the journey. On the receipt, you will have the taxi company’s name and number, so if you forget something in the taxi, you can call them.

If you are more than four passengers sharing, speak to the taxi official who can help you get a larger vehicle.

Where to stay in Stockholm

Stockholm has many great hotels for all budgets and types of travelers. For cruise travelers, we have chosen our favorites. These include popular hotels we have previously booked for cruise customers and personal favorites we use in the city.

We recommend that you book a hotel that is at least 4-star. This way, you will get a good standard of room, convenient amenities, and good concierge service, such as help with booking taxis, advice on local transport, city maps, and even making reservations for you. Here are our choices:

Clarion Hotel Amaranten

You will love this hotel and its location in Kungsholmen. Kungsholmen is an island, a green neighborhood with parks, fantastic residences, and waterside promenades.

You are within walking distance of almost everything in the city. It’s about a 10-minute walk to City Hall and the Central Station. The old town (Gamla Stan) is a 20-minute walk.

There are rooms suitable for families traveling with kids or teenagers with plenty of space. Rooms are typical of the Scandinavian style – hardwood floors, neutral colors, and modern bathrooms. It’s a great choice and good value for money.

Breakfast is outstanding. Everything you would want from a Scandinavian breakfast buffet, including plenty of healthy options and those with food allergies. You may wish to allow extra time in the morning to enjoy it!

You can check in from 3 pm. The hotel can store your luggage if you cannot access your room immediately upon early arrival. Wifi is accessible in all parts of the hotel, and you may want to note that this hotel is entirely cash-free, so credit cards are a must. This applies to many hotels all over Sweden.

First Hotel Kungsbron

This super convenient hotel is located very close to Stockholms Central Station. 

First Hotels is a brand unique to Scandinavia. The group has 33 hotels throughout Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. This particular First hotel in Kungsbron, Stockholm, is one of 6 in Sweden.

This hotel is typically Scandinavian, clear, bright, and modern, with a great breakfast buffet and comfy beds. 

To get there is an easy walk from Stockholms central station, ideal when arriving by the airport’s direct train, the Arlanda Express.

Grand Hôtel Stockholm

For a first-class stay at a prestigious hotel with an award-winning restaurant, look no further than the Grand Hôtel Stockholm.

If your budget allows and you want to start your cruising vacation in extra style with a fantastic living experience, book The Flag Suite. You will be at the very top of the hotel. There is a glass tower lookout and a private terrace. You are overlooking the water and have a view of the Royal Palace. It’s a magical view in the evenings.

As I said, this is first-class accommodation in a classic style by a Swedish interior designer. You will not find a better hotel in Stockholm.

If you do not want to pay the price tag which inevitably goes with this type of accommodation, try one of the hotel’s restaurants or bars during your stay instead. They are iconic in Stockholm.

Or if it’s just coffee and a sandwich you want, you can enjoy at the hotel’s Grand Café on the quayside, right in front of the hotel. Take a walk through the lobby while visiting, and you’ll enjoy Scandinavian design inspired by a bygone era.

Best Western Signature Collection

This Best Western hotel is located in the heart of Stockholm’s old medieval town, Gamla Stan . 

This quaint, historic, and utterly fantastic district is home to Swedish Royalty and the Swedish Parliament, quirky shopping, and cosy inns and restaurants.

Many streets are cobblestones, so wear good walking shoes! The Best Western Signature Collection offers value-for-money family accommodation in a top-notch location; breakfast is often included in the price.

Scandic Gamla Stan

What we love about the Scandic hotel is its roof-top terrace with fantastic views over the city. The Royal Palace is just a 5-minute walk away. With views all around, it’s the perfect place for a sunset drink. 

Expect all the modern Scandinavian facilities you want from a 4-star hotel. Scandic is the largest hotel operator in the Nordic region. Breakfast is excellent and always includes vegan alternatives and allergy-friendly dishes.

3 days in the city before your cruise from Stockholm

Our suggestions offer the best ways to spend three days in this stunning city.

Day 1: City Hall and Gamla Stan, the heart of Stockholm 

City Hall is a great place to start your first day in Stockholm. Especially if you have chosen to stay in Kungsholmen as City Hall is located here. 

City Hall is easily identified by the three golden crowns adorning the roof. Famous worldwide for hosting the Nobel Prize Banquet, there are two main ceremonial halls to see. 

Step first into the Blue Hall, where the Nobel Banquet is annually held, then into the stunning Golden Hall. 

We highly recommend you join a short guided tour. The guides are excellent and can explain the meaning of the Queen of Lake Mälaren image on the wall and its fascinating history.

From City Hall, walk across the bridge, Stadshusbron, into Gamla Stan, the Old Town.

Gamla Stan – The Old Town

Stockholm’s magical, compact part is home to buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Cozy cobbled streets meander into bustling squares of coffee houses and unique and quirky boutiques. 

You’ll find everything from stylish restaurants to small pubs and trendy cocktail bars.

Head over to the Royal Palace . First of all, if you are lucky, you may see the regimental ceremony of the Changing of the Guard. Inside the Baroque-style Palace, you can join a tour of some of the 600 rooms that are open to the public. Check the opening hours on their website.

A short walk from the palace, you are at Storkyrkan, where you can see the famous carved medieval statue of St George and the Dragon, dating from 1489. And right next door, you are in Stortorget, the largest square in Gamla Stan. 

Stop for a coffee break here. The Swedes take their “Fika” quite seriously – the art of drinking coffee and eating a sweet bake or open sandwich mid-morning. It’s a charming tradition, a chance to sit and chat with friends or take some time to yourself mid-morning.

In Stortorget, you will be spoilt for choice with the surrounding cosy coffee houses. We like Kaffekoppen . Try their traditional cinnamon buns!

The stunning, columned pale pink building in Stortorget is home to the Nobel Prize Museum. This is one of two must-do museums if you visit the city for only a few days.

Learn about the fairytale Nobel Gala, the history of Alfred Nobel, and the Nobel Prize recipients. An excellent activity for kids is called “Bubble Chamber,” which they’ll love.

Head across Strömbron towards Kungsträdgården (The King’s Garden) for a good lunch. This is a great place to relax or grab lunch at one of the many nearby eateries.

Gamla Stan’s most famous shopping streets are Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan, where you can easily spend the afternoon exploring. Discover even Prästgatan-  a more charming medieval street is hard to find.

Stay on Prästgatan for dinner. Try the restaurant Kryp In. Or, if you feel like eating Italian, opt for Portofino restaurant on Stora Nygatan instead.

Day 2: Djurgården and Stockholm Harbour

By your second day, you may have discovered the hop-on, hop-off buses that get you around most sights and parts of Stockholm. If you have bought a ticket, this bus is a great way to get to Djurgården. 

Otherwise, from Gamla Stan, it’s just a 9-minute ferry ride on the Djurgården ferry. And it is worth taking the boat. You will get your first glimpse of what must be one of the most beautiful archipelagos in the world.

The green island of Djurgården, just to the southeast of Gamla Stan, is a great day out for the whole family. 

Just over Djurgårds Bridge, there is a visitor’s office where you can pick up a map of the island. And right next door is Sjöcafeet, a small eatery where you can rent bicycles to explore the island. 

But just a 5-minute walk from the entrance is your first stop. Famous for what is possibly one of the best museums in Sweden, you will love The Vasa Museum.

Vasa, Sweden’s greatest historical warship

The Vasa warship, which sank in Stockholms Harbor in 1628, was triumphantly raised from the harbor bed in 1961 and carefully preserved. It’s a fantastic example of a warship and a must-see in Stockholm. The story of the ship, its extraordinary relics, and the people’s history is expertly told and depicted in the surrounding displays.

For the ABBA fans

If you love ABBA music and Mamma Mia, visiting the ABBA Museum is just a 10-minute walk away.

Packed full of original costumes and instruments, the museum tells the story of the rise to fame of ABBA and the resulting musical Mamma Mia. 

Swedish history comes to life

If you visit with children, they will love the open-air museum Skansen. History comes to life as you see the 150 historical buildings of houses, stores, and shops.

All the staff is dressed in historical costumes, and you can see handicrafts being made and animals unique to the Swedish landscape.

At the end of the afternoon, leave Djurgården and go to Östermalms Saluhall. This outstanding food court, located in a beautiful historical building from 1888, has won countless accolades and is worth a visit, most of all for the fantastic seafood.

Remember to check opening times; they vary depending on the day of the week you visit.

On your way back to your hotel, stroll through the leafy promenade of Strandvägen, where you’ll find luxury villas and apartments in perfectly preserved historical buildings.

Day 3: Drottningholms Slott (Drottningholms Palace)

Visit Stockholm in the summer, and you will experience perfect summer days and long, light evenings. You may be surprised that Stockholm can be very hot in the high season and crowded with long queues.

If you visit in high season, we strongly advise starting early in the morning to beat the heat and crowds but also consider traveling as much as possible by ferry. 

The Drottningholm Palace, Drottningholms Slott,  is the primary residence of the Swedish Royal Family. Built in 1600 and on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, it is located on the island of Lovön, west of the city.

The best way to visit this fabulous castle is by ferry. You can cruise through Lake Mälaren and see Stockholm from the water. The journey is about 1 hour. 

There is no guarantee that you will get a seat on the ferry if you turn up at the departure pier, so we recommend you book tickets in advance. Viator offers reasonable prices.

Alternatively, regular boat services during the summer depart from Stadshuskajen (the City Hall Quay) and are offered by Strömma Kanalbolaget.

Once at the castle, don’t forget to explore the grounds, the gardens, and the Chinese Pavilion.

How to get to Stockholm Port for your Cruise from Stockholm

The most common passenger terminal used by the major cruise lines in Stockholm is the Stockholm Frihamnen Cruise Terminal, located about 6km northeast of the city center. 

Check your cruise ticket for the exact location of your cruise line’s port, as several different ones are used.

To reach your cruise terminal from your central hotel, you have the following options:

• Taxi: The average cost of a taxi is about 200 sek. The journey takes about 30 minutes depending upon traffic and roadworks. Your hotel can help you book a cab to the port. Book this in advance when you first check-in. Show your driver the number of the port terminal you need to reach (this information is on your cruise ticket). And the name of your cruise line so they get you as close as possible to your departure point.
• Private Transfer: If you are four people or more, you may pre-book a private transfer before leaving home. You can share the cost as this is the most expensive way to get from Stockholm city center to the port. Inform your driver which port terminal your ship leaves from (this information is on your cruise ticket). And give them the name of your cruise line so they get you as close as possible to your departure point.
• Bus: Some buses go from the center of Stockholm to the port. The journey time is about 40 minutes. This is our least favored option as the buses can get crowded and stop frequently. Plus, you have your cruise luggage to handle too.

Stockholm Cruise Port

The port of Stockholm consists of three main cruise terminals: Skeppsbron, Stadsgården, and Frihamnen terminal. Smaller ships dock on Skeppsbron Quay in the old town, while bigger cruise ships dock at Stadsgarden and Frihamnen terminals.

1. Skeppsbron 

This cruise terminal is located right in Gamla Stan (the old town) and can only accommodate smaller vessels. You can reach the old town in a 5-minute walk (400 meters).

2. Stadsgarden

Stadsgården pier is the most convenient for larger ships as it is located not too far from the city center (Old Town is situated 1.6 miles or a 30-minute walk from the cruise terminal). This pier has a small terminal building with some basic facilities and overlooks Fotografiska, the Museum of Photography.

Getting from Stadsgården pier to Stockholm city center:

• Shuttle bus – Cruise lines normally offer a convenient round-trip shuttle service for a nominal fee and tickets must be purchased on board the ship before arriving at the port. Shuttles normally drop you off at the Royal Palace, located in the heart of Gamla Stan Old Town.
• Guests wishing to reach the city center on foot can follow the blue line from the port entrance. A walk takes 30 minutes.
• Ferry boats and Hop on Hop off boats – The boats are available at the end of the pier and they depart every 45 minutes.
• Hop on Hop off buses are available at the Stadsgården terminal. There are several different companies (red and green buses) offering rides, and prices vary on the tour package. The itinerary includes over 20 stops at Stockholm’s most popular attractions, including The Royal Palace, Vasa Museum, Strandvägen, ABBA The Museum, Skansen, Stadshuset, and others. • Public bus – Once you exit the ship, walk 10 minutes and you’ll reach Folkungagatan station where you need to take bus #53 to the city center. Bus tickets need to be purchased in advance, and you can do it at the tourist information booth by the pier (credit cards accepted), at a ticket machine by the bus stop, or by using the smartphone app “SL Journeyplanner and tickets”. Check the timetables and prices at https://sl.se/
• Taxi – Taxis are also available at the different piers, however, remember that like in any other Scandinavian country, taxi fares are not cheap.  Yellow plate taxis are approved and normally metered. If you choose any other taxi, make sure to check the cost with the driver beforehand to avoid surprises. Uber app is also available in Stockholm.

3. Frihamnen

Frihamnen Quay is the largest Stockholm cruise terminal that can accommodate up to 5 ships and is normally used for ships’ turnaround days (for cruises starting and ending in Stockholm). It has a modern terminal building offering facilities including a tourist information center, eateries, cafes, Wi-Fi, and parking for taxis and buses. Frihamnen terminal is located 4.2 km/2.6 miles from Stockholm’s old town and can be reached within a 10-minute drive.

Getting from Frihamnen Quay to Stockholm city center:

• Shuttle buses are normally offered by the cruise line for a nominal fee (around 12€ per person) and tickets must be purchased on board the ship before arrival at port. Shuttles drop you off at the Gamla Stan, the historic core of Stockholm.
• Public bus – You can take bus #76 and get off at the Slottsbacken bus stop which is located on the backside of the Royal Palace. Buses are wheelchair accessible and they run every 10 minutes.

4. Värtahamnen

This terminal is located even further from the old town (around 2.8 miles) and is normally used by ferry lines (here you can catch a ferry to Tallinn ), but can also be used for cruise ships. The distance between Frihamnen cruise terminal and Värtahamnen is a 20-minute walk (5 minutes drive).

Some ships may anchor at Nynahamn , located 67 km (around 40 miles) south of Stockholm. In your ship anchors here, you can take a train to Stockholm (a 1-hour ride) which runs twice per hour.

• The currency in Stockholm is the Swedish Krona (SEK). 1 USD equals approx. 10.50 SEK. Local currency and credit cards are widely accepted.

10 Best Things to Do in Stockholm Cruise Port

Always take into consideration the scheduled time in the port of your ship when planning your day ashore. If it is your first time here, consider taking a guided tour  to maximize your day in Stockholm.

1. The Royal Palace

Nestled in the heart of Gamla Stan, the historic core of Stockholm, the imposing Stockholm Royal Palace (Kungliga slottet) is one of the largest and most active palaces in Europe and the official residence of the Swedish monarchy. Designed in an elegant Baroque style, the 18th-century Royal Palace is open to the public and you can visit numerous halls and rooms on a guided visit, including the three museums and a vast library.

You can visit the reception rooms, Rikssalen (the Hall of State) with Queen Kristina’s silver throne, and Ordenssalarna (Halls of the Orders of Chivalry). You can also see the three museums: Gustav III’s Museum of Antiquities, the Tre Kronor Museum, and the Treasury with the regalia. Make sure not to miss the changing of the guards at 12:15 pm on weekdays and 1:15 pm on Sundays. This ceremony lasts approximately 40 minutes.

Admission tickets are required and can be purchased online or directly at the entrance. The entrance fee for adults is 160 SEK and for kids and teenagers aged 7-17 80 SEK. Once the palace reopens, the prices will be updated. Guided tours are also available but cannot be booked in advance. The guided tours are free of charge for children under 18.

Royal Apartments can be closed if there’s an official reception taking place. Guests with mobility challenges can access the Reception Room, the Treasury, and the Tre Kronor Museum as there is a lift available. Please note that large bags and backpacks are not allowed inside the palace and must be stored in lockers during your visit.

2. Stockholm City Hall

One of the most iconic landscapes in the city is located on the shore of Lake Malaren. Known for its impressive ceremonial halls, the City Hall is the location of the Nobel Prize Banquet that took place on December 10 th 1901 in the famous Blue Hall (which is actually red).

Stockholm City Hall is located a 20-minute walk from Gamla Stan and Skeppsbron cruise terminal, a 10-minute drive (or a 45-minute walk) from Stadsgården terminal, and a 15-minute drive (around 5 km/3 miles) from Frihamnen cruise terminal. Between May and September, you can also climb up inside the 106-meter-high tower and enjoy fantastic views of the city.

You can visit the City Hall on a guided tour only. Tickets cannot be purchased in advance and must be purchased on-site at the City Hall ticket counter. Guest with mobility challenges can enjoy the visit to the City Hall, however, the tower is not accessible by wheelchair.

3. Gamla Stan (Stockholm Old Town)

Stockholm’s old town is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe full of colorful houses, charming squares, little shops, bakeries, and cafes. The best way to learn about the fascinating history of this 13th-century Gothic gem is on a guided walking tour . You can also get a bicycle at one of the many rental places in the city. Do not miss the opportunity to stop at Mårten Trotzigs Alley, the narrowest street in Old Town that has 36 steps and is about 35 inches wide at its slimmest point.

4. Drottningholm Palace

A magnificent 17th-century UNESCO World Heritage site is Sweden’s best-preserved royal castle boasting stunning gardens filled with fountains and statues. There is no access to the southern wing of the Palace as it is home to the Swedish Royal Family but the rest of the palace and grounds are open to the public.

Drottningholm Palace is located on Lovön Island, approximately 14 km/8.7 miles outside Stockholm. You can take the train to Brommaplan Station and then take a bus to the Palace. You can also take a ferry from Stadshusbron (Klara Mälarstrand ferry terminal) to Drottningholm and embark on a 1-hour boat ride to the Palace. A bus ride from Stockholm takes around 30 minutes.

5. Vasa Museum

Vasa Museum is one of the most famous landmarks in Sweden. Discover the rich history of this 17th-century warship that disappeared on its maiden voyage to Poland. This beautiful ship spent almost 350 years at the bottom of the sea until it was recovered. With more than 95% of the original ship restored, Vasa is the world’s best-preserved ship and one of the most visited museums in Scandinavia.

The Vasa Museum is located on Djurgården island and to get there from Frihamnen or Stadsgården you can take Bus 76 and get off at Djurgårdsbron. An alternative option is to take a ferry at Slussen near Stadsgården terminal, or a Red metro line from the city center to Karlaplan, and from there a 10-minute walk or bus 67 to bus stop Nordiska Museet/Vasamuseet.

6. ABBA The Museum

If you are an ABBA fan, this is a MUST-stop during your visit to Stockholm! In this interactive museum, you will virtually be able to try their costumes, sing and perform on stage as the fifth member of this famous group. You will be able to admire ABBA’s memorabilia, records, awards, and much more!

The ABBA Museum is located in Djurgården next to the Vasa Museum. From Stadsgarden you can walk to the Slussen terminal and take the ferry over to Djurgården. Once you get off, the museum is within walking distance from the pier. From Frihamnen you can take bus 76 and get off at Djurgårdsbron.

If you are already familiar with Stockholm city, I strongly suggest you visit Sigtuna, the first capital of Sweden and its oldest town (established in AD 980). Explore the medieval old town and walk down Stora Gatan, the first pedestrian street that has maintained its original layout.

Sigtuna is located approximately 1 hour away from Stockholm and can be reached by train from Stockholm Central Station to Märsta Station and then take bus 570. Due to limited time in port, it’s advisable to book a guided shore excursion with your cruise line or a reliable tour operator.

With country palaces, windswept islets, dynamic towns and Viking culture, the greater Stockholm  area has a wealth of day trips and weekend getaways that are easy to drive to and even easier to reach on public transport . Roads are generally in good repair, and buses and trains are comfortable. Conveniently, SL travel passes allow unlimited travel on all buses and local trains in the area. From Drottningholm Slott to Vaxholm in the Stockholm Archipelago, here are the best day trips from Sweden's capital city. 

Uppsala and Gamla Uppsala

Why go?: Visit the historical and spiritual heart of Sweden

A lively college town that's rich in history, Uppsala is one of Sweden’s oldest cities, dating back to the 3rd century. It's also next-door to one of the most important pre-Viking sites in the country.

The city’s 40,000 students create a youthful buzz that’s easily seen in the sheer number of stylish but unpretentious cafes and bars.  The city’s charm coheres around the meandering river Fyris, which flows through the center, lined by cobblestone pathways and hundreds of bicycles. A squat, pink castle tops the hill above town, with a royal garden stretching out below it. Budding scientists will enjoy the Linnémuseet and adjoining botanical garden, a replica of botanist Carl von Linne’s workspace. History buffs have plenty to absorb, starting with the treasure-filled Museum Gustavianum or the skyline-defining Domkyrka (Cathedral). But the big draw is Gamla (Old) Uppsala, just up the road. 

Gamla Uppsala

A gorgeous cycle ride away, 2.5 miles (4km) north of Uppsala town center, is the fascinating archaeological site of Gamla Uppsala , once a flourishing 6th-century religious center where, allegedly, human sacrifices were made. It’s one of Sweden’s largest and most important ancient burial sites, containing 300 mounds from the 6th to 12th centuries. You can learn more in the adjoining Gamla Uppsala Museum , or wander on your own; there are informative plaques throughout the site.

If you feel like a stroll or a bicycle ride, Eriksleden is a 6km "‘pilgrims path" between the cathedral in Uppsala and the church in Gamla Uppsala. Its namesake, Erik the Holy, was king of Sweden from around 1150 until the Danes beheaded him 10 years later. The story is that his head rolled down the hill, and where it stopped a spring came up. The main trail also provides access to a ridged wilderness hiking area called Tunåsen, with a panoramic viewpoint (follow signs along Eriksleden just south of Gamla Uppsala to "utsiktsleden").

How to get to Uppsala:  SL commuter trains run frequently (every 30 minutes or more) from Stockholm’s Central Station and City Station to Uppsala’s central station in about 40 minutes to an hour. Bus 801 goes frequently from Stockholm Cityterminalen to Uppsala central station via Arlanda Airport in about 45 minutes. Buses for Gamla Uppsala leave from Stora Torget in central Uppsala.

Drottningholm Slott

Why go?: Explore the splendors of a royal palace

If Drottningholm reminds you a little of the Palace of Versaille, you’re not far off: it was designed around the same time, by architectural great Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. Begun in 1662, the Renaissance-inspired main palace is home to the royal family for part of the year. You can roam the grounds on your own, but it's worth taking a one-hour guided tour (30kr; in English three times daily June to August, weekends rest of year). Guides tell entertaining stories about what it was like politically and culturally at the time the palace was being designed and decorated.

Some highlights of the tour include the highly ornamented State Bedchamber of Hedvig Eleonora, the envy of everyone on Pinterest; it’s Sweden’s most expensive baroque interior. The library of Lovisa Ulrika is also a bright and impressive room, complete with most of its original 18th-century fittings (though most of her collection of 2000 books has been moved to the Royal Library in Stockholm for safekeeping).

Both of the Tessins, Nicodemus the Elder as well as the Younger, share credit for the palace's elaborate staircase, with statues and trompe l'oeil embellishments at every turn. And the dedication to design continues outside in the geometric gardens, which are set at an angle for maximum impact and are worth the trip all by themselves.

The royal theater, Slottsteater , was completed in 1766 on the instructions of Queen Lovisa Ulrika. Remarkably untouched from the time of Gustav III’s death (1792) until 1922, it’s now the oldest theater in the world still mostly in its original state. 

A backstage tour of the theater reveals even more about how much people were into the art of illusion in this era. Performances held here in summer still use the original 18th-century machinery to create dramatic effects; the wind machine is impressive. Scenes can be changed in less than seven seconds. Keep a lookout for fake marble, fake curtains and papier-mâché viewing boxes. Even the stage was designed to create illusions regarding size.

At the far end of the royal gardens is Kina Slott , a lavishly decorated Chinese pavilion built by King Adolf Fredrik as a birthday surprise for Queen Lovisa Ulrika in 1753.  The interior was the absolute pinnacle of fashion at the time; it has been restored but remains one of the finest rococo chinoiserie interiors in Europe. On the slope below Kina Slott, the carnivalesque Guards’ Tent was erected in 1781 as quarters for the dragoons of Gustav III, but it’s not really a tent at all (another illusion).

How to get to Drottningholm Slott:  Take the tunnelbana to Brommaplan, then change to the bus to Drottningholm. There's also a well-marked bicycle path from the center of Stockholm to Drottningholm. In summer, regular boat services leave from Stadshuskajen to Drottningholm. 

Why go?: Wander a large Viking settlement

The historic Viking trading center of Birka , on Björkö in Lake Mälaren, makes for an educational and evocative day trip, especially for those interested in Viking lore. A Unesco World Heritage site, the settlement was founded around 760 CE to expand and control trade in the region. There’s not much here today, other than a beautiful Swedish island, but it’s easy to imagine the place bustling with around 700 traders and craftspeople at its peak.

The village site is surrounded by the largest Viking-age cemetery in Scandinavia, with around 3000 graves. Most people were cremated, then mounds of earth were piled over the remains, but some Christian coffins and chambered tombs have been found. There are also excavated remains of a defensive fort and the harbor. 

For those whose imaginations need a little jumpstart, it’s easier to bring the scene to life if you first visit the superb Birka Museum , where exhibits include artifacts from the excavations,  copies of the most impressive objects found, and a scale model of the village as it would have looked in Viking times.

How to get to Birka: Strömma Kanalbolaget runs round-trip cruises to Birka from Stadshusbron in central Stockholm. The trip takes two hours each way; plan on a full day’s outing. Cruise prices include museum admission and a guided tour in English of the settlement’s burial mounds and fortifications. No ferries run during the Midsummer holidays.

Vaxholm and the Stockholm Archipelago

Why go?: Hop between beautiful islands on the Baltic

Stockholmers tend to get misty-eyed when they talk about the archipelago , understandably. This is where the most iconic images of the area come from: little red wooden huts and cabins, deep forests, rocky beaches and low slabs of rock dotted with sunbathing Swedes. The islands are scattered between the city and the Baltic Sea and are a must-visit if you’re in the capital.

There are many thousands of islands in the archipelago, with the count ranging from 14,000 to 100,000 (the general consensus is 24,000), but not all are inhabited or visitable. Some are quite far-flung, but many of the islands with regular ferry service are much closer to the city than many visitors imagine. Several can be seen on a day trip, or you can hop on a round-trip boat to get a look at them from the water. The nominal "capital" of the region is Vaxholm, a good place to start.

There are plenty of reasons to visit Vaxholm , the most obvious being that this is the closest archipelago island to Stockholm, making it a handy introduction to the region. But Vaxholm is more than just a gateway, its cobbled sloping streets, candy-colored wooden houses, excellent restaurants (like the waterfront seafood mainstay Melanders Fisk ) and idiosyncratic shops making it a charming destination on its own.

The oldest part of Vaxholm is Norrhamn, just north of the town hall; here you’ll find a typical 19th-century fisher’s house among other historic buildings. Along the waterfront, take a gander at the eye-catching art nouveau Waxholms Hotell . The island's most prominent sight is the imposing Vaxholm Fortress , originally built in 1544, when King Gustav Vasa ordered its construction to protect the Swedish capital and mainland. It repelled an attack by the Danes in 1612 and the Russians in 1719, among others. There are frequent ferries through the day to the island fort.

How to get to Stockholm Archipelago:  Waxholmsbolaget boats reach most of the visitable islands in the archipelago as part of Stockholm’s public transport network. Ferries leave from Stockholm’s Strömkajen, in front of the Grand Hotel, several times a day depending on the season; it takes around 50 minutes to get to Vaxholm. Buy tickets on board; five- and 30-day travel cards are also available. Most islands in the archipelago have good boat connections, provided you check schedules in advance – although there are worse places in the world to get stranded!

Which Stockholm Archipelago Tour is Best?

With thousands of islands in the Stockholm archipelago, narrowing them down for a day trip is challenging!  Most websites mention how incredible a Stockholm archipelago cruise is, but few bother pointing you in the right directionin a single guide.

I figured if I had to spend hours looking into all my options, I might as well share what I learned.  I hope this guide helps you choose the perfect tour or ferry.

Why go on a Stockholm archipelago tour?

First and foremost, most travel guides recommend going on a Stockholm archipelago cruise for the scenery.  That means as long as you go out far enough from town, you’ll likely experience the natural beauty of the estimated 24,000 islands.

But this is also a great place for outdoor-based sightDOING like hiking, kayaking, fishing, and more.  Not your speed?  There are also cute villages, great restaurants, and beaches for swimming and sunbathing.

If you love smaller towns and summers outside, don’t miss  Skelleftea in northern Sweden .  It’s a great contrast to Stockholm!

How long should you spend in the Stockholm archipelago?

Consensus is clear: don’t go on the shortest trip (to Fjäderholmarna).  If you’re only on the water for half an hour, you’ll get lovely views of Stockholm, but little of the charm of the archipelago itself.

Several islands make good day trips; in some cases, you might even be able to stop on two in one day.  Other islands have hotels and amenities for overnight stays, something to consider if you have the time.

Where should you start?

Most tourists choose an island in the central archipelago because it’s closest to Stockholm and thus a little easier/quicker to reach.  There are lots of great options here and reviews of the scenic boat trips are also great overall.

The  southern Stockholm archipelago  gets fewer visitors, but has some stand-out destinations, like Landshort, so you might want to consider it.  The scenic cruises here are also recommended.

Lastly, the  northern archipelago  looks different from a visual standpoint.  The islands aren’t packed in as densely, so there’s more open sea.  You’ll get grander vistas instead of narrow sounds.  One isn’t better than the other, but if you’re prone to seasickness, you’ll want to go during good weather to avoid potential sea swells.

The Top Stockholm Archipelago Tours

The two main ways to reach the Stockholm archipelago are with Stromma “Cinderella boats” or Waxholmsholmsbolaget’s boats.  Both offer different options from guided tour to passenger ferry

Archipelago Tour (no stops)

Time Commitment:  3 hours Price:  270 SEK This tour is included if you purchased an all-inclusive Stockholm Pass !

If you’re looking for a quick way to see the scenery in the Stockholm, this option will show off a beautiful route through the islands with guided commentary (including English-speaking tours).  The route roughly mirrors the trip to Vaxholm, with a little lingering and detours.  Although you won’t step foot on any islands, you’ll have extra time to spend back in Stockholm.

Time Commitment:  50 minutes (each way) Price:  75 SEK (each way) on the ferry or 270 SEK for a round-trip with commentary onboard This tour is included if you purchased an all-inclusive Stockholm Pass !

Vaxholm is a popular choice since it’s an easy ferry ride and you can even take the bus back if you’re tight on money.  Once you’re in town, you’ll love the narrow lanes and wooden buildings, but the best known attraction is the  Vaxholm Fortress ( Fästning ).  This is also a great place to find a fishing charter or to join a sailing expedition .

Time Commitment:  1 hour 20 minutes (each way) Price:  150 SEK (each way) on the ferry

Continuing past Vaxholm to Grinda leads to more striking scenery, making it worth the extra time if you can spare it.  Once you’re on the island, you can try cliff jumping, swimming, kayaking, or just try a round of volleyball or bocce.  It’s also less crowded because of the time it takes to reach it.

Time Commitment:  2 hours 10 minutes (each way) Price: 170 SEK (each way) on the ferry or 360 SEK for a round-trip with commentary onboard and routing via Stromma Canal

Sandhamn is considered one of the prettiest journeys, partly because it’s so far out in the Stockholm archipelago and passes right by Vaxholm and Grinda.  The trip through Stromma Canal takes you through a particularly narrow, shallow passage.  Once in Sandhamn, follow walking trails to the coastline and white sandy beaches.

Thousand Island Cruise

Time Commitment:  11 hour full-day tour Price:  1235 SEK, including transportation, short tours on 3 islands, and 2 meals

If you’re looking for an actual tour with a few chances to disembark, the 1000 Islands Cruise  is the most popular option.  The cruise takes you out past “1000” islands in the Stockholm archipelago and stops on Kymmendö, Bullero, and Sandhamn for about 45 minutes each.

Landsort (on the island of Öja)

Time Commitment:  2.5 hours (each way), with only about 30 minutes of that on ferry Price:  75 SEK (each way) for ferry

Landsort is in the southernmost section of the Stockholm archipelago and is known in particular for Sweden’s oldest lighthouse.  Travelers also love bird watching opportunities and the chance to snorkel in Bredmarsviken.  The bad news is you need to take a ~2 hour bus trip to the port in Ankarudden to catch the short boat trip.

If you’ll be hiking muddy trails, kayaking, or climbing rocks on the way to the beach, the right footwear is important.  Look for sturdy soles and the ability to drain water so your toes don’t freeze or end up blistered.  I personally wear Merrell Water Sandals  all over the world.

Active Tours of the Stockholm Archipelago

If you’re looking for sightDOING instead of simply seeing the sights, look for ways to get on the water for more active exploration. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying these tours specifically, but they look like a fun alternative!

Where to Stay in Stockholm

If you need a hotel in Stockholm, I highly recommend the Comfort Hotel Stockholm .  It has a great location, super low rates, fantastic service, comfortable rooms, and an impressive breakfast buffet. I can also recommend the Clarion Hotel Arlanda Airport .  It’s directly connected to the airport terminal so you can walk there instead of waiting for a shuttle and is quite comfortable with a nice outdoor pool.

Lots of travelers mix up the Stockholm archipelago with Lake Mälaren.  While both will provide boat trips, you’re heading in a totally different direction through the inner archipelago and it should be considered an additional thing to do rather than a substitution.  Here’s a quick summary, just in case you’re interested.

Drottningholm Palace

Time Commitment:  1 hour (each way) Price:  205 SEK for round-trip boat transport This tour is included if you purchased an all-inclusive Stockholm Pass !

See the Royal family residence at Drottningholm Palace, which is a world heritage site.  The grounds are beautifully landscaped and you could spend all day if you plan on a picnic and a stop at the Chinese Pavilion after your palace tour.

Time Commitment:  2 hours (each way) Price:  390 SEK for round-trip boat transport, guided tour, and entry to Viking Museum This tour is included if you purchased an all-inclusive Stockholm Pass !

Birka is a re-created Viking village and living history attraction meant to show off Sweden’s history.  After a beautiful boat ride, you’ll have a guided tour and time to explore on your own.  Events in the Viking village change from day-to-day, so make sure your visit coincides with what you’re interested in.

Time Commitment:  2 hours (each way) Price:  365 SEK for round-trip boat transport, guided tour, and entry to Sigtuna Museum

It’s faster to visit Sigtuna by train/bus, so this particular tour is best suited to boat lovers.  Most people come to shop and meander Stora Gatan, the main street, or for Viking history.  The churches are mostly in ruins, but there are some medieval paintings and summer concerts if you time your visit right.

Short on Time?

Most of these are full-day trips, so if your time is short in Stockholm, you’ll have to choose one and hope for the best.  Even if you only have a single day in the city, remember that Stockholm itself is on islands, so you’ll get a little taste of the archipelago even if you never hop on a boat!

@Niki, It’s always hard to answer because I don’t know anything about your interests. In my opinion, if you have something specific that caught your eye so you don’t have time for a boat trip, by all means — go with what excites you! But it is absolutely beautiful on the water so if you do have extra time to spare, I highly recommend it.

This was really helpful, thank you! It takes ages to check up all the information on the internet so this saved me time. Iwas looking for a smaller, less crowded island and after reading your post decided for Grinda. Best choice ever! Lovely trip (1h 40 min), great views, you can walk over whole island in approx. 2 hours (but do take more and enjoy it!). It has natural trail which takes you through the forest and offers some amazing views on the sea side. Plent of peaceful palces to sit down and have lunc/read book etc. Do bring food, offer on island is limited (caffe shop with some basic stuff) and the only restaurant is expensive one. Waxholm boats are a bit cheaper (no restaurant, but they have small bar so for such a short trip should be enough) than CIndarella (95 kr vs 130 kr from Stockholm). The ship pasess by Vauxhall so you can see it on the way+most of people go off the boat there so there is plenty of space on deck. Highly recommend! I stayed 3 days and managed to fit in this trip, worth the time.

The length of time on the boat, there and back, seems doable for a good day out, but how long do you have to be on the island before the return to Stockholm? @Rob, I think you will find it more enjoyable to go to Sandhamn (about 2 hours each way, with lots of beautiful scenery along the way to photograph). That would give you enough time on the island itself to explore and take pictures compared to the Thousand Islands cruise which only gives you brief visits.

@Elizabeth, Pack a jacket for wind and rain (just in case) and you’ll probably have better luck with the local ferries than a packaged tour which don’t have many spring options.

Hi, My partner and I are going to be in Stockholm from the 27th June and planning on spending 4days island hopping around archipelago. We still can’t decide which order to follow as the timetables are limited to late night travel and we would like to stay overnight on two islands. So far we’re thinking Vaxholm, Grinda, Sandham, Uto (either order), is this do-able as we need to be in Uppsala by the 1st July?

@Mandy, I think a lot of the beauty/culture of Swedish islands is the slow, relaxed pace of life — so by hopping around to 4 islands in 4 days, you might be missing out on that. I would recommend narrowing it down for simplicity’s sake. Since the schedules change every year, I’m not sure if it’s possible to do all 4 or not.

Hello, Becky! Your site is indeed a good starting point for us. We’re interested in a summer 2019 week-long, or so, stay in the Stockholm Archipelago. We would be interested in only a day or 2 in Stockholm; we’re not much of Big City life. We would really enjoy staying a night or 2 in various locations in the ARCHIPELAGO! We much more enjoy the RURAL life! Is this possible? It seems like many of the Islands are pretty deserted, and don’t offer a good number of options for lodging & dining. Can you please set us straight on this, and ideally recommend the “BEST” ISLANDS to visit… hopefully in order of visitation, to take travel time into consideration. In other words… a basic “Itinerary” of 3-4 islands to visit, departing & returning to Stockholm. We thank you in advance, Becky!

@Roger & Wendy, The archipelago doesn’t cater much to overnight tourists, as you’ve noted. Most of the lodging is privately-owned summer cabins, where local Swedes bring their families every weekend (with groceries to cook on their own). So even though the archipelago is lovely, it will take quite a bit of work to find a place for you to stay.

May I suggest an alternate? After your time in Stockholm (and perhaps a day trip to the archipelago), head north into Swedish lapland. The town of Skelleftea is a good base, not too large and not too small. I’d recommend looking into Lantliv Lodge , outside of town. You’ll be pampered with great meals, and it makes a nice base for hiking, fishing, photography, etc. With a rental car (easy), you can see more of the region or head back to town if you wish. Another option – take the ferry to Mariehman in the Aland Islands. This is about a 6-hour trip, so too far for day-trippers, but the ferry is very well-equipped for the voyage and goes through some stunning scenery. This is not 100% rural, but as you get farther away from the port in Mariehamn, I think you’ll find the quiet you’re looking for. When you’re done, instead of returning to Stockholm, you could continue on to Turku, Finland. I haven’t been, but I hear it’s very nice and the ferry is supposed to be even more beautiful than the one to Stockholm!

• Hobo Hotel Stockholm  – a mid-price hotel in a terrific location to be within walking distance of attractions. Modern style, attentive staff, rooms on higher floors, and the rooftop bar have great views.
• Bank Hotel  – A high-end hotel set in the upscale neighborhood of Östermalm in a former bank building, this chic hotel is within walking distance to most everything on this Stockholm itinerary. If you want a luxury stay, this is a great choice.
• Ett Hem  – Also in Östermalm, this exceptional Swedish design hotel with a Scandinavian aesthetic creates more of a personal, homey experience.

Getting Around During 1 Day in Stockholm

How to get to stockholm.

The main airport is Stockholm Arlanda Airport. The best way to get from Arlanda Airport to the city center of Stockholm is via public transport. From the center, the metro connects to the rest of the city.

• FASTEST : The  Arlanda Express , conveniently connected to the airport, runs every 15 minutes and takes 20 minutes (32 USD one-way / 58 USD round-trip). With a companion, the price drops to 41 USD per person for a round-trip ticket.
• CHEAPEST : The Flixbus runs 8 times/day (11 USD one-way / 19 USD round-trip). The Flygbussarna  bus runs every 20 minutes and takes 45 minutes to T-Centralen (13 USD one-way / 21 USD round-trip). The price is discounted for groups of 3 or more.
• TAXI/UBER : A taxi (60-80 USD) or an Uber (50-70 USD) from the airport to the city takes approximately 35 minutes.

With only one day in Stockholm, every minute counts. The Arlanda Express is the easiest and most efficient option. You can buy tickets at the airport.

How to Get Around Stockholm in a Day

The quickest way to get around Stockholm is with the metro called the Tunnelbana . The easy public transportation is perfect for seeing as much as possible in a limited time.

You can buy single-use tickets that are good for 75 minutes, 24-hour tickets, or 72-hour tickets. Use your credit card to purchase the ticket and scan your card when you enter the metro, bus, or ferry.

If you plan on using the metro often during your one day in Stockholm, a 24-hour ticket is cheaper than continuously buying single-use tickets.

Taxis are also an option in Stockholm but they are quite pricey and not necessary. The top-notch, convenient public transport system is so easy and inexpensive. Only use a taxi if you need it.

Tips for Enjoying Stockholm in a Day

• The currency used is the Swedish Krona.
• Sweden, and Stockholm, in particular, is widely known for its cashless society. Most places in Stockholm take cards only, so you don’t need to carry much cash.
• There are plenty of healthy and vegan eatery options in Stockholm. Try the vegan buffet at Hermans.
• Happy hour begins at 4:30 PM in Sweden. You can find some deals on drinks and food.
• Avoid taxis by using public transport. Stockholm has one of the best public transportation systems. It offers an efficient and cheaper way to get around.

A city of contrasts, Stockholm manages to merge the old with the new with relative ease.

Unlike many cities in the world Stockholm sprawls; sprawls across 14 islands in fact.

Stockholm is one of the most environmentally conscious cities on earth and is famed for its innovative use of technology in a bid to become the most sustainable city on earth.

Stockholm is ahead of the game in other ways too, on the forefront of music trends, fashion, innovation and design of pretty much all varieties.

Once you have taken time to cycle around the incredibly clean streets, sipped coffee at the Uber-trendy coffee shops it is time to starting looking a Sweden as a whole.

1. Broby Bro

Sweden is a country steeped in Viking and Iron Age history and one of the best ways to witness relics from these eras is to head to Broby bro.

This graveyard is over 1000 years old and the stories of those who are buried here live on today.

Broby bro is best experienced with a tour guide for they can bring to life the tales of the Viking heroes that once ruled the land.

There are dozens of these stories to learn about but none so interesting as ‘Estrid’ whose skeleton was found in the Christian section of the Broby bro graveyard in 1995.

2. Jarlabanke Runestones

A visit to the Jarlabanke Runestones and Jarlabanke Causeway is a great way to get to grips with Viking history and how their rule shaped the lay of the land forever.

Earl Jarlabanke is one of the most infamous Viking rulers who many believed abused his power for his own gain.

He did however create the Jarlabanke Causeway that runs its 116m course in Täby, which Jarlabanke once owned all of.

The Vikings were incredible civil engineers and in a visit to the Jarlabanke Runestones you can learn about how their bridge building and road construction changed the world in which they lived.

The tiny town of Sigtuna is home to just 8000 people and can be found sitting to the north of Stockholm.

This quaint and charming Swedish town is steeped in history and is home to some beautiful olde-world townhouses.

Sigtuna town looks out over Sigtuna Bay which is tranquil and incredibly picturesque, if a little icy in winter.

Highlights of a visit to Sigtuna include a walk around the ruins of St Olof Church.

When the winter snows settle on the tumble down medieval church is starts to look almost fairytale like.

Aside from taking time to stroll through Sigtuna winding streets you can visit Steninge Palace and Rosberg Palace too if you are particularly interested in architecture.

4. Stockholm Archipelago

The Stockholm Archipelago is one of the most impressive landscapes in all of Europe, home to some 24,000 islands that sit in the Baltic Sea.

Typically travellers associate island hopping with South East Asia, or the Caribbean, but in a short one tour trip from Stockholm city centre you can be in an island paradise, just a comparatively chilly one.

What makes the Stockholm Archipelago so incredible is that many of the islands are uninhabited and are true wildernesses.

Naturally, the Stockholm Archipelago is best experienced by boat.

You can kick back and relax or there are some tour providers who let you take the helm.

5. Natural Ice Fields

There are dozens of natural ice fields that surround Stockholm city centre and you can take your pick as to where you want to explore.

No need to have ever skated before as the guys and girls who run tours of the ice fields are fantastic teachers and by the end of the day you will feel as if you are ready to trail for the Winter Olympics…maybe.

The best season for ice skating in the Stockholm area of Sweden is between December and March.

This is a great day out for everyone; solo travellers, couples, families and big groups.

You will skate through some mesmerising landscapes, you’ll never want to skate in a rink again.

6. Sörmlandsleden

One of the most loved hiking routes in all of Sweden is Sörmlandsleden.

The trail starts about a 40-minute drive from Stockholm city centre and runs for 1000km through some of Sweden’s most pristine pine forest.

Obviously, on a day trip you cannot cover the full 1000Km but nevertheless you can get a taste for this phenomenal landscape.

You will pass through dense pine forest, walk alongside perfectly still lakes and out on to rocky plateaus.

Many people choose to hike up to Sweden’s highest peak, Kebnekaise, stop for a picnic lunch and admire the views before returning to the car to drive back to Stockholm.

7. Drottningholm Palace

Drottningholm Palace is the private residence of the Swedish royal family and is built on the island of Lovön.

Built in the 16th-Century Drottningholm Palace is a piece of history perfectly preserved in time.

Although each generation of the Swedish royal family has left their mark on the palace the 16-century facade remains the same.

In the centuries to come Swedish royals added a palace theatre and even a Chinese Pavilion.

A walk around the palace’s baroque garden is a real treat, especially when in full bloom in the spring months.

You can take a tour of the public rooms and the gardens too.

The complex is open throughout the year.

It is said that Birka was Sweden’s first city and it can be found on the island of Björkö or ‘Birch Island’. As one of the most significant trading spots of Vikings this is a city rich in history and cultural heritage.

In fact, Birka is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The highlight of a visit to Birka is taking a tour of the Viking Village.

Step inside traditional Viking homes, learn about daily life in Viking times and learn about how the black soil of Birka helped the city to thrive.

Once you have finished in the village head to Restaurant Särimner for a hearty lunch overlooking the sea.

Gävle is something of a hidden gem.

This charming town sits 100 miles to the north of Stockholm and is famed for being the home of Sweden’s best chocolate.

Many people enjoy taking a visit to the Swedish Railway Museums to see the locomotives of yesteryear, others prefer to take a gentle stroll around Boulogne Skogen City Park which is especially beautiful in autumn.

If you fancy something a little bit different book a session at the Dome Adrenaline Zone.

This 6000 sq.m playground has a climbing wall, ninja warrior course and super springy trampolines.

Church Street Saloon is a much loved restaurant in Gävle, and Matildas serves up a wonderful array of traditional Swedish dishes with a modern twist.

10. Helsinki

One thing that is particularly great about Europe is that all major cities are incredibly well connected, either by road, railway or by air.

Flights from Stockholm to Helsinki fly multiple times daily meaning you can have a flying visit to the Finnish capital should you so wish.

Take a wander down Mannerheimintie and pop into the National Museum.

Once you have toured the impressive museums head down to Parliament House or perhaps Kiasma, the city’s best loved art gallery.

The most iconic landmark in Helsinki is the rusty-red Uspenski Cathedral.

Standing proudly overlooking Helsinki Harbour do not miss this amazing architectural gem before you fly back to Stockholm in the late evening.

Malmö is a majestic city that can be found in the south of Sweden.

With cobbled streets and vast city squares there is so much to explore in the course of a day trip to Malmö.

The first port of call should be Malmö Castles that was built by the Danes in the 16th Century.

Speaking of Denmark, be sure to take moment to gaze in awe at the magnificent Øresund Bridge which connects Sweden to Denmark.

Kungsparken is an exquisite inner city park that can found just west of Malmö Town Hall.

Taking a little rowing boat out on the river in Kungsparken is one of the most romantic things you can do in all of Sweden.

12. Gripsholm Castle

Picture a castle from a fairytale, chances are what you are imagining looks a little like Gripsholm Castle.

This magical castle can be found in the small but perfectly formed town of Mariefred near Lake Mälaren.

This is one of the most popular tourist hotspots in Sweden and it is not hard to understand why.

Gripsholm Castle is not only incredibly photogenic but is home to a truly unique collection of Swedish artworks and furniture that date back over 400 years.

Once you have toured the castle’s interiors be sure to take an hour or so to roam the castle grounds.

Stopping by the deer paddock to take a moment to observe these chilled out creatures is a treat.

13. Lake Mälaren

Lake Mälaren, or Lake Malar, is one of Sweden’s natural jewels.

Covering 1,140 km² Lake Mälaren is the third-largest freshwater lake in the country.

During a day visit to Lake Mälaren you can drop by Gripsholm Castle or even Drottningholm Palace for a flying visit but many people prefer to head straight to Långholmen.

This is a sandy beach area that sits on the shores of Lake Mälaren and is the perfect place to relax and unwind, especially in summer.

If you prefer to be more active on your holidays you are more than welcome to be.

There are dozens of cycling and hiking trails that run through the woodlands that border Lake Mälaren.

14. Gotland

Hiding out in the Baltic Sea is the island of Gotland.

The coastline of this island is other-worldly and has to be seen to be believed.

Arches, stacks, and stumps are scattered across the beaches and form stunning silhouettes at sunrise and sunset.

The Gotland Museum is a must-visit and provides fascinating insights into local history and the region’s rich culture.

A visit to the Lummelunda Cave is a great way to spend an afternoon and can be accessed by a short boat ride.

The city of Visby that sits on Gotland is one of the best preserved medieval cities in the world.

Visby is another of Sweden’s gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

15. Uppsala

Uppsala is a charming Swedish university city that has a lot going on.

Being a university city means that there is no short supply of hipster coffee shops and bustling bars.

Marrying the old with the new, much like Stockholm in that sense, Uppsala is a versatile city that is a joy to explore.

There is a lot of history to explore in Uppsala, from the Carolina Rediviva library to Skokloster Castle and Uppsala Cathedral.

If you have a hankering for seafood head to Hambergs Fisk, should you want to hang with the cool kids get yourself to Cafe Årumment and settle down with a latte or two.

Most concertgoers already knew and sang along to every word of all the songs she sang from the album even though it was released just a few weeks earlier on April 19. Such is the power of Swift.

In her long career of riveting live shows, her stunning performance of “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” may very well be her masterpiece so far. Swift is enjoying unprecedented success with her latest albums and tour, which showcase how she can tell a story like no other artist. Both her singing voice and her literary voice are stronger than ever, and it’s joyful to watch Swift embody and embrace her mightiness as a performer.

It's no wonder many fans are willing to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles for the chance to see Taylor Swift perform live. Since tickets sold out so quickly for the few remaining U.S. tour dates and resellers are aware of the intense demand, some fans discovered it was more doable to attend one of her international shows.

So, many fans in the U.S. and other countries have decided to make a vacation out of going to The Eras Tour in Europe this summer. If you are among them, here’s some advice on how to make the most of your international adventure.

Consider Your Lodging and Transportation Choices First

Before buying a ticket, be sure that you will have accommodations available. If you can book a hotel that’s within walking distance of a stadium and know the area is safe, that is ideal. Otherwise, check bus and train schedules for the night of your venue, then look at hotels that might be close to bus or train stops.

With tens of thousands of fellow concertgoers leaving at the same time, transportation can get tricky. If you book a room that’s farther from the venue, try to get a rental car instead of vying for a taxi or rideshare after the show. If you do that, just be sure parking will be available. You may need to buy a parking pass from the venue.

Also be aware that hotel room prices skyrocket when Swift is in town because there is such a high demand. If you are renting a car and don’t mind a longer drive, you can save a lot of money by booking a hotel room that’s a longer drive from the venue.

Enjoy The Moment

Amy Wilkinson, a 49-year-old Swiftie from Tucson, AZ, went viral in December 2023 for her reenactments of The Eras Tour performances using Elf on the Shelf dolls. She posted them to her Instagram, @Tswizzle_Momma , and found thousands of people watching each time she posted her videos. Like many other Swifties in the US, she is flying to Europe for The Eras Tour.

Wilkinson told me she had this advice for fellow fans going to the show abroad, “Enjoy the entire experience, from the moment you get on the plane until the morning after. You may be going for the concert, but the memories are made in the details. See the sights. Enjoy the food. Meet other Swifties. This is at the heart of what international travel is about.”

Make The Friendship Bracelets

Rebecca Bartley, a Swiftie from Nova Scotia, Canada, is going to Sweden to see The Eras Tour. She advises bringing friendship bracelets to share with fellow concertgoers on the night of your show. Wilkinson suggested making friendship bracelets in the language of the country where you’ll be seeing the show.

It’s easy to learn how to make friendship bracelets. I had never dabbled in making jewelry before, but now I find great joy in creating friendship bracelets. I created dozens and handed them to fans at The Eras Tour movie.

To make friendship bracelets, I start by choosing the colors I want and which word or phrase I want the bracelet to express. Then I choose colorful beads and pick out all the necessary letter beads.

Next, I cut off elastic string. I find it’s best to use Stretch Magic elastic string because of its strength and durability. To make the bracelets, I cut off a piece of string that’s twice as long as I need so that there is ample room for cutting and tying multiple knots.

Then I tape one end of the string to my workspace, string the beads I have set aside until I feel like the bracelet is complete. Being careful to not let any of the beads slide off the string, I then wrap it around my wrist to see how it fits and then consider whether I am making the bracelet for a wrist that’s likely larger or smaller than mine. (Also, with elastic string, there’s room for a flexible fit.) I adjust accordingly.

As a last step, I make four to five knots in the string to tie off the bracelet. Many fans choose to add a dab of fabric glue to the end of the knot, but I found that got really messy and wasn’t necessary if you make multiple knots. Then I tuck the knots into one of the beads so that it doesn’t show on the bracelet. Then the bracelet is concert-ready!

Keep in mind that there are a lot of other ways to make friendship bracelets that are for more involved and creative that mine. And, if the idea of making friendship bracelets doesn’t sound fun to you, don’t worry. You can buy premade friendship bracelets on Etsy. Some Etsy shops like RainFoxx13 and BonniesBracelet have elaborate, beautiful friendship bracelets that you may want to keep for yourself. Others sell packs of friendship bracelets in bulk.

If you don’t want to trade friendship bracelets, that’s okay, too. The Swiftie community is accepting and supportive, and you still may get several bracelets as gifts.

What To Wear To The Eras Tour

There are no rules for what you should wear to Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour beyond the guidelines from the venue. Some fans go casual, and others choose to dress to the nines for the show. Some fans choose to wear merch from Taylor Swift’s official store . Many fans choose to dress up in costumes inspired by Swift’s songs and lyrics.

With the release of The Tortured Poets Department and its video “Fortnight,” some fans are choosing to imitate some of her looks from the video. Others are wearing their interpretation of the incredible costumes she wears during The Eras Tour concert. Others look at past eras for inspiration. You are likely to see every era represented in fan costumes at a show.

What You Should Bring To The Eras Tour In Europe

Wilkinson advised me that the number one thing to bring is a portable phone charger. If you plan on recording video and taking photos, your phone’s battery may die down quickly, and a phone charger can ensure you can keep capturing the memories all night.

Earplugs are a good idea if you’re sensitive to loud noise. If you’re bringing kids along, they are a must. They ensure you can enjoy the music while protecting your ears.

Bring along a cardigan or jacket. Layering is a good idea for a concert during the summer. Although it may be hot in the stadium, you might be chilly on the way home from the show.

You can’t go wrong bringing along hand sanitizer and a travel pack of tissues. Even if you can get through “All Too Well” without tearing up, you may cry at the sheer excitement of the experience. It can be intense in the best way.

If you have tickets that are far back, bring along binoculars to see close-up details.

What To Avoid At The Eras Tour

Don’t come to the stadium with a big bag. If you haven’t attended stadium concerts before, you may not know that you need to carry a clear bag if you want to bring a purse. It also has to fit within the measurements allowed in the stadium, so you can’t just buy a clear backpack and expect to get in the show. Check with your show’s venue to make sure you follow their rules for what you can bring.

Scandinavia and other chillier parts of Europe are experiencing a dramatic increase in June to August travel — and it’s all driven by a desire to escape sizzling temperatures that have become the norm in popular destinations like Paris and Rome, experts say.

During the warm weather months, bookings for trips to Norway — particularly in places like cool, coastal Bergen — have risen 37% over last year, according to luxury operator Kensington Tours.

The luxury tour company also named Innsbruck, Austria — nearly 2,000 feet above sea level in the Austrian Alps — as another not-so-hot summer commodity, the Wall Street Journal reported .

Travel booking company Hopper reported that trips to Sweden have gone up 70% , while Finland went off the charts with a 126% boost. There has also been increased interest in the Faroe Islands — a scenic archipelago off the coast of Denmark that has raised its profile in recent years.

“As Europe braces for the impact of increasingly common extreme weather events , we anticipate travel patterns and destination choice shifts over the long term,” said Eduardo Santander, executive director of the European Travel Commission said.

World traveler Mary Miles, a 33-year-old in public relations from Baltimore, will enjoy a trip to Scandinavia with her husband later this year, touring Sweden, Denmark, and Norway for two weeks.

Cooler weather was an easy signing bonus for Miles’ other half.

“He’s very, very sensitive to heat,” she told the outlet. “He gets nervous that he’s going to pass out.”

Experts add that the rationale for spending time at these comparatively obscure locations instead of literal tourist hotspots further to the south is not only because they offer a milder climate — travelers will also enjoy fewer fellow foreign vacationers.

The trend toward northern destinations extends beyond Europe.

Domestically, interest in travel to Alaska has risen 25%, according to Kayak.

The northernmost state has become a hub for cruises, according to Jillian Simpson of the Alaska Travel Industry Association.

“Statewide, the state did see a record number of cruise passengers arriving, which was very good,” she told Alaska Public Media earlier this year.

Seward, a major cruise port, is expecting at least 200,000 visitors via cruises in 2024.

Among a flurry of surreal images capturing the dazzling auroras is one taken by Benjamin Williamson of a lighthouse in Portland, Maine.

"It's one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, the awe and wonder," Williamson told CNN.

He said he used a long-exposure technique to snap the shot, but did not edit it.

Things could be about to ramp up

If you still haven't seen the aurora, hold on for another 30 minutes to an hour, according to CNN meteorologist Chad Myers.

The next wave of coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, which cause the aurora, is about to arrive, he said.

"Just wait a minute because things are going to start to ramp up here," he said, adding that the increase could arrive "anytime now." "When it comes, get outside, get ready, put your coat on."

For those who are too busy to witness the phenomenon tonight, Myers said the aurora is expected to last three nights.

Why does the aurora last for a weekend?

Generally, it takes just eight minutes for light to travel 93 million miles to the Earth from the sun, but astrophysicist Janna Levin said the energized particles causing the current wave of aurora travel a lot slower, causing the phenomenon to last for the weekend.

"Some of these mass ejections are trillions of kilograms," she said. "They're slower. So they're taking longer, but still hours, maybe tens of hours."

Here's how the solar storm looks in the South and on the East Coast

The aurora was visible across the East Coast and in the South Friday.

Here's how it looked in Chester, South Carolina.

Down in Florida, waves of color swam through the sky.

Up north in New Jersey, a purple-ish haze could be seen in the sky.

Will solar storms get more intense and risky in the future?

The answer is probably not in the short term, according to astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi.

He said scientists study what is constantly happening on the surface of the sun and have found a pattern.

“Geological data shows us that in the past the sun was way more active than it is today. It has cycles where it goes very quiet ... and you have events that show that the solar activity was much, much greater,” he told CNN. “So there's no evidence that we're going to see those big maxima this cycle." 

But the astrophysicist also spoke of a caveat - the limitations of modern science.

“Even though it's predictable in the short term, we still don't quite understand what creates the magnetic fields in the sun,” he said, adding: “That's why NASA has so many satellites looking at the sun.”

The rare solar storm may also disrupt communications. The last time a solar storm of this magnitude reached Earth was in October 2003, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center.

Behind dazzling aurora could lie “real danger,” Bill Nye the Science Guy says

The massive solar storm could present “a real danger,” especially with the modern world relying so much on electricity, according to Bill Nye the Science Guy , a science educator and engineer.

Scientists are warning an increase in solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun have the potential to disrupt communication on Earth into the weekend. Solar flares can affect communications and GPS almost immediately because they disrupt Earth’s ionosphere, or part of the upper atmosphere. Energetic particles released by the sun can also disrupt electronics on spacecraft and affect astronauts without proper protection within 20 minutes to several hours.

In comparison to tonight's event, Nye drew comparisons with another incident in 1859, known as the Carrington Event, when telegraph communications were severely affected.

“The other thing, everybody, that is a real danger to our technological society, different from 1859, is how much we depend on electricity and our electronics and so on,” Nye said. "None of us really in the developed world could go very long without electricity."

He noted that there are systems in place to minimize the impact, but “stuff might go wrong,” stressing that not all transformers are equipped to withstand such a solar event.

“It depends on the strength of the event and it depends on how much of our infrastructures are prepared for this the sort of thing,” he said.

Here's where clouds will block the view of the northern lights in the US

After an incredibly stormy week, most of the Lower 48 has clear skies to see the northern lights. But there are some areas where clouds and rainy weather are spoiling the view.

A deck of clouds is blocking the sky in the Northeast, from parts of Virginia into Maine, as an area of low pressure spins off the East Coast.

In the Midwest, the aurora will be hard to see through thick clouds in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan — including the Upper Peninsula — and Illinois.

A stripe of clouds is tracking across Texas, including Dallas-Forth Worth, and into Louisiana.

And in the Southwest, patchy clouds across the the Four Corners region could make the northern lights difficult to spot.

Aurora seen at least as far south as Georgia

Barely visible to the naked eye, the aurora can be seen in Atlanta in the 10 p.m. ET hour. 

It is easier to see through photographs using a long exposure. The photos below, taken by CNN's Eric Zerkel and Emily Smith, used 3- and 10-second exposures.
