18 Student Favourites by Bus

1. Social distanced street food at Digbeth Dining Club

Having reopened on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at Digbeth Arena,  DDC  brings together some of the best street food in the West Midlands (we recommend going on the last Friday of the month for their biggest line-ups). From artisan burgers to tempting tacos, you’re bound to find something to tickle your tastebuds - if you don't believe us, just check out their mouthwatering Instagram. It's just a fifteen minute walk from the Bullring, or you can catch one of our  services to Digbeth .

2. Shop safely at Birmingham Bullring & Grand Central

Everyone treats themselves to a little retail therapy on Student Loan day, right? This year will be no different, and as home to some of the most popular brand names, the  Bullring  is one of the best shopping experiences in the region. Fancy lunch while you're at it? Wander through the Bullring Link and you'll find Grand Central - one of Birmingham's newest food hubs, with restaurants serving up everything from Mexican favourites to Vietnamese comfort food. Make sure to check their crowd checker updates so you can shop safely and with peace of mind.

3. Break out of an Escape Room with your friends

Escape rooms like  Escape Live  near Livery Street (underneath the Arches in the Jewellery Quarter) have become a great option for an alternative day out. They offer a fun and unique experience as you attempt to escape by solving a series of puzzles within a time limit. Also with contactless check-in and strict cleaning regimes, Escape Live have made sure your experience isn’t hindered in any way and that you can enjoy it to the max.Catch our  16  or  74  buses which will drop you off just a few minutes away.

4. Party the night away on Broad Street

Broad Street has some of the most established student nights in the city. From Walkabout to Pryzm, Broad Street is the place to be. If you’re thinking of heading down town, our  9 ,  23  &  24  services serve Broad Street regularly. Make sure you check which bars require booking ahead first to avoid disappointment.

5. Relax in one of Birmingham’s beautiful parks

While Birmingham is the UK’s second city, it’s not without its green areas.  Cannon Hill Park ,  Handsworth Park  and  Sutton Park  are some of the most picturesque areas of the city. Why not escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a few hours and hit the reset button with an easy  bus journey  right to the park entrances.

6. Find a vintage bargain at Urban Village

Just head to Digbeth to find this quirky little gem.  Urban Village  is a retro-styled shop is packed with everything vintage, from 1930s to 1980s clothing, accessories and classic vinyl records. Plus, as an added bonus, save 10% when you show your bus pass at the checkout. You’ll never go away empty handed! Also don’t forget to bring a mask whilst shopping.

7. Get creative at the Custard Factory

The  Custard Factory  in Digbeth is still one of Birmingham’s best creative hubs where you’ll find all manner of small businesses and independent shops. Have a nose around and pick up a bargain, then head to  Ghetto Golf  for some wickedly twisted mini-golf or the  Mockingbird Cinema  to catch a classic film and a delicious burger or two.

8. Explore the literary history of Sarehole Mill

The Mecca for Lord of the Rings fans, where Tolkien gathered inspiration for his legendary characters and settings,  Sarehole Mill  is located in the heart of Moseley. They also serve tasty fresh baked pizzas in the museum courtyard so you can enjoy a bite to eat in some beautiful surroundings. Just hop on the  5  or  11C  services, and you can explore the mill and attend Hobbit themed events with ease.

9. Enjoy a Moseley night out

Casual haunts and student favourites like the  Prince of Wales ,  The Fighting Cocks  and  The Cuban Embassy  make for a fun and unique night out away from the usual strip. 11. Embrace the rich history of The Coffin Works

For a truly unique museum experience, you have to visit  The Coffin Works , dedicated to the world of coffin making with tours and stories of the funerals of famous people in history. The Coffin Works can be reached via a  number of our services  and you can even save £1.50 on admission  here .

12. Taste a real curry at the Balti Triangle

Did you know the Balti curry was actually created in Birmingham? And for the best in the city, we recommend visiting the  Balti Triangle . There you’ll find a collection of Balti houses that are second to none, and often said to be where the Balti originated from. Services like our  1 ,  1A ,  6  and  50  regularly serve the Triangle.

13. Cruise the canals by boat

A favourite bit of Brummie trivia is that we have more miles of canals than Venice, so if you want a truly unique way to explore the city, book yourself on a canal tour. Journeys last between 30-60 mins and offer views and insights into the canal system you won’t get any other way. The  Dudley  tour is particularly special, offering 420 million years of history in just 45 minutes!

14. Watch a movie in style at the Everyman Cinema

A hidden gem at  The Mailbox ,  Everyman  is the perfect way to treat someone who loves film. Enjoy a great movie on plush sofa seating with the ability to order food and drinks and have them brought to you! We would definitely recommend the ice cream sundaes! Remember to book in advance though as there will now be restricted seating compared to before.

Black Country

15. Release your wild side at Dudley Zoo

We have a real soft spot for  Dudley Zoo . With more than 1300 species to see, as well as an opportunity to see the ruins of Dudley Castle, this local gem makes for a very unique experience. See all your favourites from the animal kingdom, from tigers to chimpanzees, all while in the shadow of an ancient castle. It’s an easy journey too, just 4 minutes walk from  Dudley bus station . Make sure to pre book your tickets online now it has reopened, as you won’t be able to pay on the day or over the phone.

16. Discover local history at the Black Country Museum

Go back in time with the  Black Country Living Museum  and explore 26 acres, covering over 200 years of history, and see the evolution of the Black Country before your eyes. The best part is, as a bus traveller you can get 25% off admission with our  voucher . The  11  /  11A  buses from Dudley/Walsall drop off right outside! Make sure you pre book an entry time as you are no longer allowed to pay on entry.

17. Take in the peace and quiet of The New Art Gallery, Walsall

Based in Walsall’s town centre and just a few minutes from the bus station, you can enjoy a number of internationally recognised pieces, regular workshops and interesting talks to inform your studies or just spend a nice, quiet day. Plus the best part -  museum  admission is free! However, the gallery is now operating a revised opening schedule from Wednesday to Saturday 11am-4pm and on Sundays 12pm-4pm.

18. Enjoy a tiki cocktail or 2 at Samoan Joes

Head on a cocktail journey around the Oceania islands at Samoan Joes Tiki Bar in Coventry. Specialising in zombie cocktails you can share a rum punch with a friend in their secret tiki garden. Just remember to pre book your table beforehand for a maximum of 6 people to avoid disappointment.

FAQ's - Student bus pass

Direct debit payments.

What is the next step once I have applied?

You will be given the opportunity to pay for your first ticket by credit / debit card so you benefit from our services within 5 days of receiving your application.

Your direct debit application will take approximately 10-15 days to process. You will receive a welcome letter confirming your details and payments timescales. Your next ticket will arrive 5 working days before the expiry of the first ticket and payment will be collected from the bank account details supplied.

Is my application accepted automatically?

A Credit Reference Agency will be asked to confirm the name, address and credit status of the person paying the Direct Debit.

When will the money be taken from my account?

The first direct debit payment from your account will be taken on the initial start day of your ticket, for instance if you selected a start date of 1st August 2013 (you will pay for this ticket by credit / debit card) your direct debit will be collected on 1st September 2013 for the subsequent ticket. This calendar date will then be the date your debit payment is made for every month that you are a member of the scheme. If this falls on a bank holiday, your payment will be taken the next working day.

Can West Midlands Travel Ltd change the amount they take out of my account?

We will only collect the authorised amount. If the amount changes, we will notify you in writing at least 10 working days in advance.

What if my ticket does not arrive in time?

If your ticket has not arrived 5 days before your current ticket expires, please contact the Direct Debit Team on 0121 254 6322 or email us at [email protected]. WMT Ltd will not refund travel tickets that have been purchased as a result of tickets not arriving due to a delay in the postal service.

I already have a photocard do I still need to send in a photograph with my application?

Yes. All photographs are scanned into our system, so that if you ever lose your ID card we can send out a replacement, subject to an administration fee. You will need to either upload or send a passport sized photograph with every new application.

Can I change my ticket subscription?

Yes. One month's notice is required to make any changes to your ticket

What if I lose my ticket or it is stolen?

You can contact the Direct Debit team on 0121 254 6322 and order a replacement ticket and / or photocard. A replacement fee of £6 for each section will be required for payment by credit / debit card.

Refunds will not be given for any additional tickets purchased.

What if I forget my ticket?

It is your responsibility to have a valid ticket with you for any journey you make. Unfortunately refunds will not be given for any tickets purchased under these circumstances.

Can I cancel my Direct Debit?

Yes. You must give at least one month's notice. You will be able to email us at [email protected]

Buying your bus pass online

How do I pay?

Payment can be made using most major credit and debit cards, including Visa, Electron, Visa Debit, Mastercard, and Maestro. Unfortunately we do not accept American Express.

Payment will be processed by our payment service provider Sage who operate a secure online payment service. You may be asked for your 3D secure details if your card issuer has already asked you to assign them.

How long will it take to buy the ticket?

Buying a ticket online is simple, once you have registered your account details, all subsequent purchases are straight forward taking no more than a few minutes to complete. If you are a student we require course details. Have your credit / debit card ready and a passport style photograph to upload. You can elect to send it to us by post. Please note that this may delay the fulfilment of your order.

How do I search for my ticket?

If you are unsure which product is the right one for you, use our filters to refine the list. 'REGIONAL' cards are for all our Midlands services, or if you don't need to travel throughout the region you can choose more localised products by selecting the filter required.

Once you have selected your age group and region, you will be presented with a list of the tickets available in your chosen location. Check the INFO box to view details of the tickets area of validity and any restrictions that may apply.

How much will the ticket cost?

Please see 'All Tickets & Prices' section on the website to find a full list of products and prices we offer and the best way to buy them.

  • Colour Passport sized photograph that can be uploaded or posted to us for production of your photocard.

University of Birmingham staff benefit from an interest free loan for their Swift season ticket.

Metro Ticket Zones is LIVE!

The Metro network has been split into four zones (1-4). The new ticket range will see the majority of journeys either reduced in price or with no additional cost for customers.

Ticket questions

Metro ticket zones is the name of our ticketing range. To travel on our network, we have a zone-based ticketing system. By using this zone-based ticketing system this gives our customers the opportunity to purchase a ticket within their chosen zone, without the need to specify which stops they are travelling between which allows for greater flexibility in their travel plans.

No, it was recognised that the kinds of journeys that people make by tram are different from those made by train. This means that by adopting the same zonal boundaries as rail, we are not be able to offer the flexibility and value that has been built into our zonal ticket range.

The Metro Ticket Zones Map provides the full details of how the network has been split into four zones and can be used to check which zone your stop is in, and which ticket type you will need to complete your journey.

Where a stop has two zones, this is called a border stop. There are three border stops and these are shown on the Metro Ticket Zones Map with the stop name in a white box. If you are starting or ending your journey at a border stop, you will not be charged for both zones. The zone that you pay for will depend on your direction of travel.

There are three stops (Jewellery Quarter, Black Lake and Priestfield) that are on the border of two zones, which means these stops are in two fare zones. This can be seen on the Metro Ticket Zones Map with the stop name in a white box.

If you are starting or ending your journey at a border stop then your zone will depend on the direction of travel. For example, Jewellery Quarter is on the border of Zone 1 and 2. Birmingham man dead after domestic shooting, suspect in custody

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - A Birmingham man is dead following what police are calling a domestic altercation turned deadly Tuesday night.

Andrew Derrel Perry, 38, was pronounced dead on the scene after Birmingham Police say they were initially responding to a domestic disturbance call just after 10 p.m.

While officers were on the way to the 1500 block of Cedargate Circle, the call was updated to a person shot. Once at the residence, police found Perry laying unresponsive on the floor with a gunshot wound.

Investigators say there appears to have been a domestic altercation between the victim and his wife, leading to shots being fired.

Birmingham Police are investigating the shooting as a homicide and a suspect is in custody.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information comes available.

‘I’m feeling paralysed’: they arrested my friends for protesting on campus

We chose Yale and it chose us, but one party was betrayed

“Oliver was arrested this morning. 13 students arrested,” Ella texted me at 8.27am, “No, 45.”

“Are you awake? Should we go? I’m feeling paralyzed right now.”

“Alex, Lily, and I are going.”

“I just woke up. I can’t believe it. Yale admin should be ashamed,” I texted back.

“Are you at Beinecke now?”

“Yes. A lot of press is here. Bring us masks. Instagram is making this a catastrophe but it’s peaceful. Liam and Oliver were both arrested.”

“Do you guys need anything? What can I bring?”

“Do you have your backpack?”

“We have everything, we’re good. No clue how long I’ll stay, it feels wrong to leave. I don’t have class until 1.”

“Okay I’m going to skip my class. Are you inside or outside?”

“Outside. We are in the front of the circle.”

The New York Times headline reads 40+ Yale Students Arrested at Pro-Palestine Protest . The victims are familiar faces: an editor at our campus magazine, two soccer players on our club team, a friend who lives one residence hall over.

Protests Turn Violent at Yale, my classmate titles his opinion piece. The Yale Daily News publishes “Yale sided with democracy – you should too” and “This is freedom of expression. Yale, don’t suppress it.”

In an email, subject line “Update on campus activity,” Yale’s president, Peter Salovey, writes: “Early this morning, Yale Police Department (YPD) officers spoke with students on Beinecke Plaza and gave them several opportunities to leave and avoid arrest. YPD officers only arrested those who were prepared to be arrested. During that action, Yale Police arrested 60 people who refused a final request to leave voluntarily. Forty-seven were Yale students … I am grateful that we were able to take these actions peacefully and that none of the protesters resisted arrest.”

So, today we sat, and held hands, and sang, and chanted together at Yale. We screamed with each other and at each other.

The police chief was interviewed by Fox News while keeping an eye on the crowd. Alex spelled out “Jews for a Free Palestine” in blue chalk, and I outlined the words in white. Today is Passover.

Restaurants served mutual aid. Claire’s Corner Copia, a local diner serving kosher food, provided French toast two ways: bananas and chocolate chips. Our late-night spot delivered 20 pizzas or more. Donated water bottles piled up between white columns.

We ripped cardboard to make signs. “Books not Bombs”, I wrote in large black letters, with “books” lined in green and “bombs” in red. The remaining cardboard transformed into “Jews for Ceasefire”, “Education is for Liberation”, and “Free Palestine”.

Friends who attended last weekend’s formal changed out of long dresses and into masks, sunglasses, hoodies and other dox-preventive-wear. Friends from first-year orientation groups led counterprotests with “Fact Check” signs and matching T-shirts. The Yale gospel choir performed, dance troupes offered workshops, and professors hosted teach-ins.

These professors are in full supply: I go to a school that offers classes called Contesting Injustice, Political Protests, and The Liberation Movement. Yale is a member of the greater systems, machines and institutions which perpetuate oppression, yet teaches us to knock them down.

I am lying on the floor of my dorm room. I’ve retreated to my corner of campus. It is 80 sq ft of popcorn walls and pine wood furniture. I turn the fan on, a muffle of white noise.

Echoes of “Free Gaza, free Palestine, within our lifetime,” “I ain’t gonna study war no more,” and “We are the children” run together. I am lying on the floor staring up at the ceiling when the first tears well.

I am crying because during protests at the November Harvard-Yale football game, every university in Palestine had been bombed. By today’s protest in April, no universities in Palestine remain. I am crying because with every hour that passes, 42 bombs are dropped on Gaza. Yale will not disclose how many of those bombs I funded with my tuition dollars.

Though I am notably supportive of Occupy Beinecke on Yale’s campus, I am not writing a piece about the genocide in Palestine. While that piece is more important and more pressing, it has already been written and will continue to be. I am writing about the energy, the division, the tension and the heaviness of Yale at this moment. I am writing about the ethical failure of a powerful, western center of education.

It is a curious situation. We shout: “Shame on Yale,” at an institution we have fought tooth and nail to attend. We shout, “Shame on you,” at administrators who had a hand in selecting each of us. We chose Yale and it chose us, but one party was betrayed.

When the first student was zip-tied by a police officer this morning, the safety net evaporated. A net that protected discourse, peaceful education and civil disagreement. The arrests reveal something about the place we call home: the promise of Yale may be lost. Or maybe, we walked on our own the whole time.

I text Ella around 11.42pm to ask: “How are you doing?”

She’s back from Seder.

“I can’t stop staring at the wall,” she replies.

“I’m having a hard time returning to life.”

“It is hard to figure out how we should handle the world.”

“It is sick. And it is sick how we divide each other.

It is hard to figure out what to do.”

“This is the first time I have really cried in a while.

I forgot how your eyes turn sore and puffy.”

“Want to come stare at a wall with me?”

“What do you mean?”

“If you want to just sit. Together.”
