Nelly Korda ties LPGA record with fifth straight victory, wins The Chevron Championship

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) — Nelly Korda couldn't have imagined the incredible run she's put together this season while at home recovering from a blood clot that required surgery in 2022.

“Because obviously then I was just more scared for my health,” she said. “Competing was kind of on the back seat. I was not thinking about competing at all. But I think all of the sad times and the health scares that I have gone through have made me who I am today.”

Fully healthy now, Korda is seemingly unstoppable. The world's No. 1 player hasn't lost a tournament since January, and now she's a two-time major champion.

Korda etched her name in the LPGA record books Sunday, winning her record-tying fifth straight tournament with a two-stroke victory in The Chevron Championship.

Korda joins Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA events. Her previous major victory was in 2021 at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship.

“It’s been an amazing feeling these past couple weeks knowing that I can go on this stretch and that if I stay in my bubble and I keep golf in a sense simple and let it flow, then I can have so, so much fun out here,” she said.

Korda shot a 3-under 69 in the final to outlast Maja Stark of Sweden, who birdied her final two holes to shoot 69 and pull within one. Korda stayed aggressive on the par-5 18th, easily clearing the lake in front of the green and setting up an easy up-and-down birdie for a two-shot victory.

She had a four-day total of 13-under 275 at Carlton Woods.

Korda nearly aced the par-3 17th, with her tee shot hitting the hole and hopping in the air before settling within 10 feet. She settled for par to maintain her two-shot lead.

Korda wowed the large crowd, which followed her throughout the day, by chipping into the wind for birdie on the par-4 10th hole to take a four-stroke lead. The 25-year-old raised her club above her head with one hand and pumped her fist after the ball rolled into the hole.

Her parents — former Australian Open tennis champion Petr Korda and Regina Rajchrtova — beamed as she was presented with the trophy.

“She had a difficult ’22 and ’23 in certain ways,” Petr Korda said. “She did not win a tournament in ’23 and some things probably made her humble and (she) put a lot of work into where she is right now. Without the work and commitment, she would not be here. So seeing that, I’m very happy.”

Korda’s older sister, Jessica, is a six-time LPGA winner who’s taking a break from golf after giving birth to her first child.

Korda took home $1.2 million from a purse of $7.9 million, a significant increase from last year’s purse of $5.2 million. That brings her season earnings to $2,424,216 and her career earnings to $11,361,489.

Winners had been jumping into Poppie’s Pond off the 18th green at Mission Hills since 1988, and Korda became the second to do it in Texas by doing a cannonball off a small dock into brown-tinged water. World No. 2 Lilia Vu was first to jump into the pond here after her win last season. Vu withdrew from this year’s tournament before the first round after experiencing “severe discomfort” in her back during warmups.

While still shivering from her post-win plunge Sunday, Korda confirmed she'll be competing in the JM Eagle LA Championship next week in Los Angeles. She was then asked about the possibility of becoming the first to ever win six straight LPGA tournaments.

“I’m going to enjoy this right now and then I’ll think about that,” she said. “But yeah, it’s been an amazing time. Hopefully, keep the streak alive. But I’ve been so grateful to compete week in and week out and get the five in a row, too.”

“I actually was checking the scores this afternoon when we were in the rain delay,” he said. “I’m extremely happy for her and proud of her. That’s some pretty special stuff. It’s been a treat to watch.”

Korda entered the last round one shot off the lead after completing the last seven holes of the weather-delayed third round early Sunday morning on a windy and unseasonably cool day. She was wiped out after her big win because she’d been up since 4 a.m. to prepare for the end of the third round.

She birdied two of her first four holes to take the lead. Lauren Coughlin birdied Nos. 13 and 14 to get within two strokes, but bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes put her four behind. She shot a final-round 68 to finish tied for third with Brooke Henderson.

Coughlin got emotional when discussing her best finish in a major.

“It’s really cool to see all of the work that I’ve put in, especially with my putting and my short game, and putting specifically showed off this week, as well,” she said.

Henderson was tied with Korda for second to start the last round after she shot a 64 in the third round to set a scoring record for the tournament since its move from Mission Hills, California, to Texas last year. But the Canadian, who has 13 LPGA wins with two majors, also faltered early in the final round, with a bogey and a double bogey in the first four holes.

Haeran Ryu of South Korea shot a bogey-free 67 to enter the final round leading Korda by one. But the 2023 Rookie of the Year bogeyed the first two holes of the fourth round. She closed with a 74 and finished fifth.

Eighteen-year-old amateur Jasmine Koo provided an unlikely highlight on the 18th hole. Her second shot bounced off the advertising board in the water and back into play. She ended up with a birdie to shoot 71.

Madrid Open 2024 Draw: Elena Rybakina's projected path to the final ft. potential SF showdown with Danielle Collins and final with Iga Swiatek

World No. 4 Elena Rybakina will gear up to capture her fourth title of the season at the Madrid Open.

Rybakina claimed her third title of the season at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart on Sunday (April 21). She defeated Marta Kostyuk in straight sets to become the first woman to lift three trophies this year.

All three of Rybakina's titles have come at the WTA 500 level. She did reach a couple of WTA 1000 finals too but came up short. The Kazakh will now aim to change that statistic.

As one of the seeded players at the Madrid Open, Rybakina has received a first-round bye. Here's a look at the list of players she's likely to go through if she wants to win the title at the venue:

Possible R2 opponent - Lucia Bronzetti

Elena Rybakina could be up against Lucia Bronzetti or a yet to be placed qualifier in the second round. The latter has a 5-9 record at main draw level this season. The Italian has also never beaten a top-10 player in her career and has lost all five of her matches against them in straight sets.

If Bronzetti loses to the qualifier, it shouldn't affect the outcome after that. Rybakina should be able to handle whoever she faces at this stage to advance further.

Possible R3 opponent - Marta Kostyuk

Elena Rybakina easily defeated Marta Kostyuk 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix over the past weekend. Now, a rematch is on the cards as they're drawn to possibly face each other in the third round.

Kostyuk has been one of the most in-form players this season. However, unless she changes something substantially in a few days, it's tough to see her getting the better of Rybakina so soon.

Possible R4 opponent - Anna Kalinskaya

Anna Kalinskaya staged a comeback to defeat Elena Rybakina in three sets at last year's Madrid Open. The two are slated to cross paths once again at the venue this time.

Kalinskaya is in pretty good form this year. She made it to the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships in February. She has a couple of wins over Rybakina, though the latter has the same number of victories in this rivalry too.

Should Kalinskaya falter early on, Rybakina could face last year's Madrid Open semifinalist Ekaterina Alexandrova instead. She scored a big win as she toppled World No. 1 Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open a few weeks ago. However, the Russian is also known for her inconsistency, so it's tough to predict her performance.

Possible QF opponent - Anhelina Kalinina

Zheng Qinwen is the highest-ranked player Elena Rybakina could meet in the quarterfinals. However, the Chinese youngster has struggled to perform at a high level after her runner-up finish at the Australian Open. She has won just five matches since then.

Daria Kasatkina is another big name Rybakina could face at this stage. However, the Russian is just 3-4 at the WTA 1000 level this season, despite performing quite well elsewhere.

Anhelina Kalinina, who's quite good on clay, could make it this far as well. The two duked it out in the final of the 2023 Italian Open, which ended on a sad note as the Ukrainian was forced to retire due to an injury. Now that she's in good shape, she could give the Kazakh a run for her money.

Possible SF opponent - Danielle Collins

Danielle Collins is riding a 13-match winning streak at present. She defeated Elena Rybakina in the final of the Miami Open to capture the biggest title of her career. The American will be keen to continue her unbeaten run.

Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka is also in this part of the draw. However, her form has taken a nosedive since her successful title defence at the Australian Open. She's due to face Collins in the fourth round, so if she's able to get past her, she could set up a semifinal date against Rybakina.

Sabalenka leads Rybakina 5-3 in the head-to-head, though the latter has won three of their last four matches. Given their recent form, the Kazakh will be favored to come out on top once again.

Possible final opponent - Iga Swiatek

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek is most likely to be Elena Rybakina's opponent in the championship round. The two have one of the most fiercest rivalries on the tour right now, and the Kazakh has a 4-2 advantage in it.

Rybakina won their most recent encounter in the semifinals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in three sets. Swiatek had the last laugh in the Qatar Open final a couple of months ago before that.

If Swiatek loses early, then Coco Gauff , Maria Sakkari, Victoria Azarenka, Emma Raducanu, Naomi Osaka, and Sloane Stephens are some of the other players Rybakina could face in the final.

Garbiñe Muguruza, Two-Time Grand Slam Champion, Retires from Professional Tennis

  • Author: Tim Capurso

Two-time Grand Slam champion and former WTA world No. 1 Garbine Muguruza announced her retirement from professional tennis at a press conference in Madrid on Saturday.

"I wanted to tell you that the time has come to say goodbye. It has been a long, beautiful career, full of moments and anecdotes, I could tell a thousand. I feel that the time has come to retire, to open a new chapter of my life, a new era," Muguruza said.

Muguruza, 30, last played in the WTA in January 2023 before announcing that she was taking a leave of absence from the sport to spend more time with friends and family last April.

The Venezuelan native played 10 seasons in professional tennis, winning the 2016 French Open and 2017 Wimbledon titles while spending four weeks as the world No. 1 back in '17. She is the only player in the history of women's tennis to defeat both Serena and Venus Williams in Grand Slam finals.

Muguruza retires with 10 WTA singles titles and $24,813,379 in career prize money.

Garbine Muguruza: Former Wimbledon champion announces retirement from tennis

Former world number one and two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza has confirmed her retirement from tennis with immediate effect.

The 30-year-old, born in Venezuela, announced her decision at a press conference in Madrid on Saturday.

“I feel I am ready to retire, to open this new chapter in my life. A new era, a new life,” she said.

“I was nervous, wanting to say it. I feel good, even if the word retired is a bit strong,” she said.

She retires as the second-most successful female Spanish singles player of all time, behind Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, who won four singles Grand Slam titles.

Muguruza defeated one of the Williams sisters for both of her titles, at the time becoming only the second tennis player born in the 1990s to win a Major.

She defeated Serena in the 2016 French Open as part of a run of 14 consecutive sets won, having lost to her in the previous year’s Wimbledon final. She then defeated Venus at the 2017 Wimbledon — including a final set bagel — before spending four weeks at world number one later that year.

tennis world tour trophies

Muguruza has frequently described the Williams sisters as “role models” for her career since she was growing up, not just in terms of the standards they set for women’s tennis, but for developing a style of play built on power and front-foot aggression that the Spaniard would make her own throughout her career. Writing in El País in 2022, upon Serena’s retirement, she said that Williams “created a “before and after” that forced us to be better”.

Muguruza reached at least the final in three of the four Grand Slam tournaments, losing out to American Sofia Kenin at the 2020 Australian Open. Her best results at the US Open came in 2017 and 2021, but she only made the fourth round on both occasions. In 2021, she recorded a surprise victory at the WTA Tour Finals, entering as the fifth seed and coming out on top of a showcase of that witheringly powerful game .

Muguruza’s last match took place at a WTA 250 event in Lyon, where the then world No 82 lost in straight sets to qualifier Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic; her last Grand Slam appearance came in a straight-sets defeat to Belgium’s Elise Mertens in the first round of the 2023 Australian Open.

The two-time Grand Slam champion took an extended break from competition in April last year, to spend more time with her friends and family, and has not played since. In October 2023, she said that “tennis has no place in my routine.”

“I still pay attention to my teammates, from time to time I can play but not intensely but more for fun. It doesn’t occupy my mind, my day or my routines.”
