MELODIC CLASH

Reviving The Jangle Pop Sound Of The '90s For A New Generation

The Frank and Walters

The Frank and Walters was founded in Cork at the beginning of the 90s. Their mission: to spread joy and optimism around the globe through music. Named after some eccentric old men from down the street, their energetic shows, infectious tunes, and seeming irrepressible happiness gained a following. Before long major and independent labels were interested. In 1991 the Franks were signed to Setanta Records They very quickly got down and dirty. First, they moved to London and released an EP full of well-crafted and memorable songs. ‘Fashion Crisis Hits New York’ was one of them. The band chose to earn fame by playing hundreds gigs. They were infamous for wearing their oversized purple-and-orange uniforms when provoked.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Letters: Israel’s war strategy must take into account the full nature of the enemy

Plus: Tory election hopes; chicken registration rules; Brexit in Brixham; reasons to be a cultural Christian; and a steadfast freezer

Letters to the Editor

SIR – The killing of aid workers in Gaza is, according to John Kirby, the spokesman for the US National Security Council, “emblematic of a larger problem” ( report, April 3 ).  This “problem” surely revolves around Israel’s determination to completely eradicate Hamas – and its inability to do so. The Israel Defense Forces are able to kill numerous terrorists, but how can they kill an idea, a belief, a way of life – however flawed these may be?  Israel’s war against Hamas has been ongoing for six months, but the rump of Hamas survives and, presumably, with the moral and day-to-day support of thousands of Gaza’s inhabitants, is entrenched in small pockets of the region. Israel’s war aims need to be redefined so that they are realistic and achievable. At the moment, they are neither.  If this does not happen, support for their cause – both in Israel and internationally – will diminish, supplies of military hardware from overseas may not be forthcoming, and the tide of battle could easily turn. David S Ainsworth Manchester

SIR – Certainly the death of innocent aid workers in Gaza is shocking. However, Israel has apologised sincerely and has promised to investigate this gross error.  It is easy to condemn Israel, but I do not recall Hamas apologising for its terrorist attack on innocent victims six months ago, and I am sure that they have no intention of carrying out any investigation. Theirs was a deliberate attack, whereas Israel has accepted it made a mistake. Ann Horscroft Lingfield, Surrey

SIR – I write as a retired solicitor to express my anger that so many judges in this country have had the audacity to write to the Government demanding that arms sales to Israel be stopped ( report, telegraph.co.uk, April 4 ).  Do they not realise that Israel is fighting for its survival? Do they not know that innocent hostages are still in the hands of Hamas and subject to sexual abuse and torture?  Paul G Walters Derby

SIR – As terrorists hide themselves among frightened civilian populations, the task of eliminating those responsible for starting the bloodshed involves appalling collateral loss of life.  It is difficult to see how this is to be avoided – awful though it is.  Rather than denying the only democracy in the Middle East the means to defend itself, might it not be more useful to concentrate on sanctioning the suppliers of weapons to terrorist groups across the world? If effective, at least such sanctions would act against the brutal instigators of the violence. Bob Burgess Chester

Tory election hopes

SIR – Your report ( April 4 ) “Conservatives face election result worse than 1997 in YouGov poll”, is very depressing. The Government needs to try to bring traditional Tory voters back into the fold. Otherwise we’ll have the likely catastrophe of a Labour regime. My suggestion is to do something drastic to improve the NHS. There are daily stories about its shortfalls, which affect us all. I don’t mean just provide more money, but something radical, started quickly and completed soon. If people thought that a Conservative government could improve the service, many would vote to keep it. George Jackson Hemingford Grey, Cambridgeshire

SIR – Surely it would make sense for us to wait until November and hold the general election after the result of the US presidential race. The relationship between the PM and US president is critical in so many aspects of our lives. Tim Watson St Albans, Hertfordshire

SIR – As far as I am aware, a woman has never committed a mass shooting simply because she couldn’t get a boyfriend or was a misandrist – the reverse of which cannot be said of men. This seems to me to be far more “radical” behaviour than choosing not to date a particular man ( “The Left-wing radicalisation of young women should alarm us all”, Michael Deacon, Features, April 4 ).  In my opinion, it is more likely that women are simply exercising their right to choose not to date men whom they do not find interesting, funny or intelligent – hardly a radical thought. Amelia Clegg Basildon, Essex

Steadfast freezer

SIR – Unlike Sue Elsey ( Letters, April 2 ), I can’t claim with certainty that our chest deep freezer is more than 50 years old. However, my husband bought it second-hand from neighbours in Sharjah, in the United Arab Emirates, in June 1975. Four years later, we moved to Dubai and it followed in the back of a pick-up. It was shipped to the UK when we returned in 1985, completing its journey by road to Cornwall and, two years later, made its final move to Grantham, where it, and we, have remained for 37 years.  It still works perfectly, which is more than can be said for its owners. Delia Hearmon Grantham, Lincolnshire

SIR – I have an electric fan heater that was purchased for the nursery of my eldest daughter. It is still going strong, and my daughter is 65 this year. Frank Mitchell Tadley, Hampshire

SIR – My Prestige Crock-ette slow cooker is still in regular use. As a newly married couple we bought it in a Timothy Whites houseware branch in Llandudno. The guarantee was valid for one year from December 16 1978. Sue Waring East Bridgford, Nottinghamshire

SIR – My frequent requests for a new vacuum cleaner to replace our ancient Electrolux always got the reply, “That’ll do”, until one day when it was pictured in The Telegraph among exhibits in an industrial museum.  There was then no denying that our machine, clad in imitation crocodile skin in its designer’s attempt to make it glamorous, was indeed a museum piece. Thank you, Telegraph. Shirley Puckett Tenterden, Kent

Chicken registration

SIR – I understand from your report ( “Chicken owners must fill out register to beat bird flu”, April 4 ) that, as a keeper of one Blue Maran chicken called Brexit (formerly two birds before her chum Vera died), I will have to register my flock.  I assume my National Stockman’s Certificate in Poultry Practice gained at Plumpton Agricultural College in 1973 will still be valid as proof of my competence. Iain Maitland Sherborne, Dorset

SIR – I hope to hatch out six more hens next week, and one of my old friends will probably die. This happens on an almost monthly basis at this time of year. Between bantams and hens it is a constantly changing number. Seldom less than six and never more than 18.  The cost to taxpayers of monitoring poultry owners would be ridiculous. We can all read the paper or listen to the news and do what is necessary. Is the Government just looking for another way to waste our money? Philippa Cannon Great Dunmow, Essex

Brexit in Brixham

SIR – As the MP for South Devon, I was disappointed to read Sherelle Jacobs’s article ( Comment, April 2 ) regarding Brexit, Brixham and the fishing industry, in which she did not point out that, since 2016, Brixham Fish Market has had record-breaking sales every year. Along with an increase of quota by 25 per cent and a £20 million levelling-up fund, she seems to have missed the fact that Brixham is booming. Of course, she is right that French customs officials have been fantastically petulant towards British exporters, but surely the answer is to use the terms of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, notably the specialised trade committees, to sort out infuriating but infrequent delays.  Ministers are more powerful than any of their predecessors of the past 40 years; they need to use their power to help win back confidence that leaving the EU was the right course of action. Anthony Mangnall MP (Con) Totnes, Devon

Blinding bike lights

SIR – Regarding car headlights being blinding to oncoming drivers ( Letters, April 4 ), I would add that, for anyone who suffers migraines, some high-powered lights now used by cyclists are quite likely to bring on an attack. Tony Hill Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire

Gardeners led astray by global warming fears

Rising in the damp: trumpet pitchers (Sarracenia) growing in north Leicestershire

SIR – Years ago, the Met Office advised that, owing to global warming ( Letters, April 4 ), gardeners in the UK should go ahead and plant Mediterranean gardens with cacti.  Those of us who foolishly heeded this advice are now left repenting at leisure.  The cacti we planted are suffering wet rot and the bog plants that we were slow to remove are flourishing. Idris White Sevenoaks, Kent

SIR – I’m bored of complaints about the rain. We have three large water troughs that are filling up nicely. Alexandra Elletson Marlborough, Wiltshire

Why it makes sense to be a cultural Christian

SIR – Madeline Grant ( Comment, April 3 ) says Professor Richard Dawkins has made an “admission that he’s now a ‘cultural Christian’ ”. Anyone that has followed his thinking will know this is not a change in position. He’s been on record as a cultural Christian for years. Far from being the contradiction Ms Grant suggests, being a cultural Christian and an atheist in a country that has been Christian-dominated for so long makes good sense. Christianity has permeated British art, literature, architecture and laws for many centuries, and it is perfectly possible to enjoy cultural aspects without a belief in God’s existence or participating in Christian rituals. As an atheist, while I don’t believe in the stories behind Christmas and Easter, I’m happy to celebrate the occasions and enjoy the cultural elements with family. If people stopped believing in Christianity, the cultural parts would not cease, as they are part of the country’s DNA. Paul Kelly Chesham, Buckinghamshire

SIR – In my dictionary, a Christian is a caring, compassionate person.  I am a Christian atheist. I try to follow the example of the good man, Jesus, but I don’t believe in anything supernatural. Richard Dawkins is right to describe himself as a cultural Christian, and it should be obvious what he means by that. Kathleen Robson Horwich, Lancashire

SIR – I think a closer look would show that it is “observed” Christianity – that of beautiful churches and a formal service on Sunday morning – which is declining.  There are many Christian churches whose memberships (rather than “attendances”) are increasing weekly, with a very wide demographic, from newborns to octogenarians, and who understand faith as a way of life, not a set of religious rules. Christianity is alive and flourishing in the UK. Mik Shaw Goring-by-Sea, West Sussex

Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters backs Tristan Sailor to fill Reece Walsh void ahead of NRL clash with Melbourne Storm

Sport Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters backs Tristan Sailor to fill Reece Walsh void ahead of NRL clash with Melbourne Storm

Reece Walsh

Brisbane coach Kevin Walters say he won't push for an early Reece Walsh return as the fullback's replacement prepares for a reunion of sorts in Melbourne.

Walsh sustained a facial fracture in the Broncos' 34-12 round-three NRL loss to Penrith.

The club subsequently said the representative fullback would miss between four and six weeks.

But Walsh did not require surgery and is a noted quick healer and he has been training at Red Hill in custom headgear.

Ahead of Thursday's clash with the Storm in Melbourne, Walters wouldn't commit to a round-six return against cross-town rivals the Dolphins, at least a week earlier than predicted.

"When Reece is ready he'll play again; that's not up to me, that's up to our medical staff," he said.

In his place Tristan Sailor has made a case for retention, the fullback bringing a different package to the table in the number one.

Tristan Sailor

"He's a very good, very smart footballer," Walters said.

"Different to Reece, he brings a different mentality and was great defensively for us (against the Cowboys last week).

"The good teams need those players in their side."

Sailor, the son of Broncos legend Wendell, will renew an old rivalry with counterpart Ryan Papenhuyzen after the duo faced off against each other as juniors in Sydney.

"I am the same age as Paps. We have come through together and versing each other in touch and footy all the way through," Sailor said.

"Back in school touch from under 15s he played for CIS (Combined Independent Schools) and I played for CCC (Combined Catholic Colleges). Even then you could see how good he was.

"It is really good to see him bounce back from all the adversity he has had. I am really excited to verse him again. He is a livewire."

Brisbane snapped a 14-game losing streak against the Storm in a 26-0 semifinal romp last year, but haven't beaten the team in Melbourne for eight years.

Melbourne have won 40 of their 55 clashes, with one draw, since their 1998 inception.

"You have to say we are traditional rivals because when the club was formed in 1998 it was started by John Ribot, Glenn Lazarus and Chris Johns, so it had that Broncos element from day one," Storm general manager of football Frank Ponissi said.

"Of course our coach Craig Bellamy came from the Broncos and for years and years we had a lot of players from Queensland with the big three of Cameron (Smith), Cooper Cronk and Billy (Slater).

"Some of them grew up supporting the Broncos. Cameron Munster is another one now."

Ben Te Kura, at 205cm, will become the tallest NRL player when he debuts for Brisbane while Melbourne are poised to welcome back key trio Christian Welch (concussion), Jahrome Hughes (suspension) and Munster (groin).
