In early 2020, The Script were flying high. The band’s sixth album Sunsets and Full Moons, released the previous November, had been their fifth album to hit Number One in the UK. Frontman Danny O’Donoghue called it straight, describing it as "the most poignant album we’ve ever made”, written and recorded in the aftermath of the singer losing his mother. That loss rocket-powered songs like Run Through Walls, and also gave other tracks like The Last Time (“we said that it would last, but how come it’s the last time?”) added emotional heft. And the fans responded in kind, sending the album to the top of the charts. It added to the remarkable tally of the Irish trio’s achievements of the preceding 11 years: five previous platinum-selling albums, 6 billion streams, 30 million single sales, 11 million album sales, 13 million monthly Spotify listeners and 2 million tickets sold across headline shows globally. So, come the beginning of last year, there was more where that came from in the shape of a sold-out UK arena tour. But then, of course, history came knocking. “We were just coming towards the end of a tour,” begins Glen Power (drums, vocals). First, he remembers things being scaled back. “Part of our thing is to get up close and personal with our fans – in fact, part of our show then was to go into the audience for a b-stage moment. We’re a really tactile band – we like to meet people, and suddenly our meet & greets starting getting cancelled. Then, we were in Aberdeen and we were due to go to Newcastle – and we had some big shows in Dublin, arena shows at Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. And then everything got cancelled. It was terrible all round, of course. But for us as a band it was devastating.” Remembering the dark days of last March, O’Donoghue still sounds shocked, “I walked offstage at what turned out to be the last show – we decided to end about a week before the government made it mandatory – with 16,000 people’s voices ringing in my ears, singing For The First Time. And I jumped in my car, went to my house in London – and there I was for 18 months. It was such a shock to the system! Then there were just the four of us in the house – me, my missus, and then our reflections staring at us in the mirror!” he laughs. Like all of us, the singer/songwriter turned inwards. “And then I got to meet a lot of versions of myself: Confused Me, Optimistic Me, Working Out Me and Fat Me! Like there was four of us, there were all these different scenarios, hanging out together.” As guitarist Mark Sheehan notes, “it’s been a redefining time for us, like it has for everyone. If we can’t play live, who are we?" It was time for the group to regroup – but if they couldn’t physically do that, how best to do that, for their own sake as musicians but also for the fans’ sake? Cue a greatest hits. Cue Tales From The Script, the first ever best of from a band with enough hits and fan-favourites to make that a blockbuster 18-track double album. “We realised, if we were ever going to do something like this, now is the time,” says Power. “We’ve been together so long, and after all these years of writing and releasing and playing, let’s celebrate that fact.” And if ever people needed a celebratory set of songs, it’s now. “Exactly!” exclaims O’Donoghue. “That’s the way I’m really perceiving it. We sat around and talked about what we did next, what our next chapter is. And if we do a seventh album, do people, when they get to come out and see us, do they want to see six, seven new songs? And will we have the opportunity to road-test these songs? "Then, as we thought we were approaching our anniversary, that felt like another opportunity. And for music fans, what do we want to do in all this? We want to go into a field, or a big hall or arena, with our friends, sing the songs we know and love, sing them with the friends I’ve not been able to see, and have a big party. I think that’s live music in a microcosm right now – the joy of being under a roof together, arm in arm, enjoying things we love. "So, a greatest hits felt the best way to go, a festival of great moments.” Then came the hard bit: whittling down their back catalogue. After much discussion, they hit on a solid 17 bangers, with space for one new track. As Sheehan puts it succinctly, I Want It All (And Then Some), “it’s traditional Script. It just delivers all the ingredients everyone knows and loves”. Breaking it down, O’Donoghue cites his favourite lyrics: “I don’t want someone I can live with / I want someone I can’t live without / I don’t want someone I can just be with / I want someone I can’t be without / ’Cause I won’t stop looking till I find the one / I want it all – and then some.” “Lyrically I feel like it’s almost the best of The Script in one song,” he says. “It’s got heart, emotion, melancholy, heartbreak, triumph, a twist in the lyric.” It’s also a timely lyric. After everything we’ve been through, why not want it all (and then some)? Why settle for anything less than everything? Why settle for anything less than The Script? As for the other tracks, the band members each have their favourites. Firstly, Sheehan shouts out 2008’s debut single We Cry. “That stands out for me because it was our first actual music video we did as a band. And going to New York to shoot that – just to go there anyway as an Irish person is always a buzz, but to shoot a video there with your band was just incredible. That was a real moment for me as a musician. There were so many things that were unknown to us – and so many fears. And that was the song that really helped us develop our sound, and the first moment that we realised, hang on, we might have something here.” Power nominates another early track, Before The Worst. “That was also in the first three songs we wrote, and on this one I got to write the guitar part, which I’m really proud of. Mark invited me over to his apartment in Los Angeles to do some work. And at the time I had no money – I slept on Mark’s couch – so I had to get a Credit Union loan to pay for the flight. But I remember being about to leave for the trip thinking to myself, jeepers, I’m going all the way to America, I can’t afford it, and I don’t know what’s gonna happen… “Me and Danny would still be in our bedrooms if it wasn’t for our Mark,” he continues. “He has a great head for organisation and gathering the flock and steering the ship. Me and Danny are very good on the oars, but you need somebody at the front of the ship who can avoid the icebergs! That’s Mark, and that’s why I have really fond memories of writing that song in LA with Mark, making up that acoustic guitar part on his couch while he was producing. It was another foundation song for the band.” Breakeven, another track from the band’s self-titled debut, also gets Power’s vote, “because of the drumbeat – it’s a hard groove to play live. For me, that’s the most important one from the first album because it’s the genesis of what we became. I knew we were headed for good things.” For his first pick, O’Donoghue digs in the crates, too, noting the personal resonance of second single The Man Who Can’t Be Moved. “It was the last song my dad heard before he passed away. One of my greater moments as a songwriter was to write a song that stood the test of time. I love singing it every night. I love the message. And if there’s a song that encapsulates the emotion of who I am, that’s it. So, I’m so pleased that my dad got hear that.” Then he pivots to Hall of Fame, the 2012 tune that was the lead track from the album #3 and which featured will.i.am. “Just when you were frightened you might be a one-hit wonder, or that you were lucky with the second album, that song came along,” he says of the track that’s their most streamed track on Spotify, only a million or shy of one billion plays. “It was written quite fast, and the reach that’s had around the world is incredible. It’s a universal message, one that resonated with the public. It got played at the London 2012 Paralympics, and it was used again in Tokyo this summer. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime song, and coming from our third album, it really solidified us as a career band.” Finally, O’Donoghue has to foreground Run Through Walls, the song written after his mum passed away. “I look at that song and I feel like, here we are, 12, 13 years later, and we’re still doing what we always wanted to do with music: putting an immense amount of pain, feeling and emotion into our songs. And we’re using music as therapy, and as a vehicle to express those sentiments. As someone said, art is the only justification for pain. I live by that. Here we are, all these years later, still passionately believing in that. “And also here we are, three friends, still standing on stage together, still singing that we’d run through walls for each other. That encapsulates the spirit of The Script.” That spirit will once again be flowing strong in 2022, when the band take the Tales from The Script show on the road. As Power says, “taking all the best songs and playing them all together in one place – that’ll turn it into a celebration that we’ve survived and we’ve all got through to this moment together”. For sure. This isn’t a full-stop on the band’s career – more, it’s a celebratory exclamation mark after everything we’ve all been through. vThat's a feeling and sensation Danny O’Donoghue can’t wait for. As a frontman, he loves getting in amongst it. Or, as he puts it, “a Script show is me going through the audience, touching hands, shaking hands, being with the audience. That’s the kind of band we are, and that’s what our fans expect. And we need that as much as the fans – maybe more so! So I can’t wait for us to provide that Script energy. It’s a springboard to our next chapter, but it’s also our story so far. That’s why it’s called Tales from the Script.” He’s right. He does need it more than the fans. “I’m super-charged!” the frontman grins. “I know I’m gonna lose it on stage, night after night. I don’t think you’ve ever met a band more excited about doing a best of and then taking it on the road.”

The Script's Official Top 10 biggest songs

the-script-2021.jpg

The Script have enjoyed huge success on the Official Chart pretty much from the get-go. Just a year after forming in 2007 the Irish rock-pop band scored their first Number 1 album - and they've remained in the upper echelons of the chart ever since.

13 years and several chart-topping records later, Danny O'Donoghue, Mark Sheehah and Glen Power are taking a moment to look back at their achievements with a new career-spanning greatest hits album titled Tales From The Script, led by new track I Want It All.

MORE: The Script's Official UK Chart history in full

Four of The Script's singles have racked up over 1 million chart sales in the UK - the biggest Script song of them all is Hall Of Fame , with a mighty 1.78 million chart sales, including 111 million streams. Their first and currently only Number 1 single, the collaboration with will.i.am was released in 2012, when both were coaches on The Voice UK. The rousing pop-rock-rap hybrid is underpinned by a stadium sized chorus - a cornerstone of the band's success when it comes to their singles.

The Script with their Official Number 1 Album Award for Sunsents & Full Moons (2019)

The Script's second biggest single is The Man Who Can't Be Moved (1.57m), a Number 2 hit in 2008 ( losing out on the top spot to Katy Perry's I Kissed A Girl ) and their proper breakthrough hit following their Top 20 debut single We Cry. In third place is Breakeven which, despite peaking at Number 21, has 1.17 million chart sales and is arguably their most enduring hit. The track also earned them considerable Stateside success, where it peaked at Number 12.

2014's Top 3 hit Superheroes ranks as their fourth biggest single with 907,000 chart sales, while 2010's For The First Time - the lead single from their second album Science & Faith, rounds out the Top 5 on 770,000. Further down, 2017's Rain places sixth, and their most recent Top 40 entry, 2019's The Last Time, is eighth.

The greatest hits soundtrack guide: every song & when they play.

Music is at the center of the action in Hulu's new romantic comedy The Greatest Hits, with a strong 24-song soundtrack to move the story along.

  • The Greatest Hits features an eclectic mix of 24 songs spanning decades and genres, enhancing the emotional journey of the characters.
  • Lucy Boynton leads the cast in a story of love and loss, with music playing a central role in Harriet's struggle to move on from her past.
  • The soundtrack, with songs like "This Is the Day" and "Loud Places," adds depth and emotion to the film's narrative, creating a captivating experience for viewers.

Music plays a major role in Hulu’s new original romantic comedy film The Greatest Hits with 24 songs on its soundtrack that span many decades, genres, and sounds. The Hulu film is about a young woman named Harriet, whose boyfriend, Max, died in a car accident two years before the start of the movie’s events. Harriet’s efforts to move on from her tragic loss are thwarted by the fact that she keeps getting pulled back in time whenever she hears one of the songs she shared with her deceased boyfriend.

British-American actress Lucy Boynton, known for her roles in Ballet Shoes , Sense and Sensibility , Sing Street , and more, leads The Greatest Hits cast as Harriet, with David Corenswet (Max) and Justin H. Min (David) playing her love interests. The Greatest Hits received mixed reviews from critics, but its soundtrack is one of the film’s greatest strengths . With music playing such an important part of the story, The Greatest Hits assembled an entertaining and interesting mix of songs for Harriet and the viewers to listen to.

When Every Song On The Greatest Hits Soundtrack Plays In The Movie

The greatest hits soundtrack features an eclectic mix of 24 songs.

“This Is the Day” by The The - The first song featured in The Greatest Hits is “This Is the Day” by The The. The 1983 song transports Harriet and Max to the moment just before the car accident that killed him. As the song played on the radio, Harriet tried and failed to convince Max to take the next right to avoid getting into the accident that only she would survive. The band sings “ This is the day your life will surely change ” as they collide with another car.

“Me and My Shadow” by Peggy Lee - “Me and My Shadow” by Peggy Lee is one of the many montage songs in The Greatest Hits . The classic jazz piano song plays as Harriet drives to work for her shift at the library. While in the car, viewers can see that Harriet had the radio in her car removed to prevent herself from accidentally hearing one of her and Max’s songs.

“Pump Up the Jam” by Technotronic - When Harriet rear-ends another car, she hears the worldwide 1989 house hit “Pump Up the Jam” by Technotronic playing from the other car's radio. At one of the worst possible moments, Harriet is sent back to a 2018 Halloween party she attended with Max, though she quickly pulls the plug on the party’s stereo to bring herself back to the present.

“Don’t Push It Don’t Force It” by Leon Haywood - Following the accident in The Greatest Hits , Harriet visits her best friend Morris (Austin Crute). Morris tells her to listen to the lyrics of the song playing in his apartment, “Don’t Push It Don’t Force It” by Leon Haywood, because it’s great advice.

“Loud Places” by Jamie xx feat. Romy - The indie-pop song “Loud Places” by Jamie xx feat. Romy transports Harriet back to the first time she met Max in The Greatest Hits . She and Morris were attending a musical festival when she spotted Max in a love-at-first-sight moment. It plays again towards the film’s end when Harriet travels back to the start to let Max go and free herself from being haunted by music and their relationship.

“Play It On My Radio” by Niki & The Dove - In The Greatest Hits , the soft indietronica song plays over a montage of Harriet trying to find the song she needs to hear to save Max. On Harriet’s wall are post-it notes full of song titles, letting her know what she’s tried already. The opening lyrics to “Play It On My Radio” are “ there’s a song that I’m looking for ,” making it the perfect fit for this moment.

“Next To You (Marcy Rising Edit)” by Locussolus feat. Heidi Lawden - “Next To You (Marcy Rising Edit)” plays very briefly in The Greatest Hits . As Harriet leaves grief counseling, she meets David for the first time .

“To Turn You On (Disco Punisher Remix)” by Roxy Music - “To Turn You On (Disco Punisher Remix)” plays twice in The Greatest Hits , becoming David and Harriet’s song . Harriet invited David to the record store where Morris was DJing. When there was only one copy of the Roxy Music record on vinyl, they decided to share joint custody of it. At the end of the film, in the future she created by never having dated Max, Harriet attends a Roxy Music concert with her friends and meets David again for the “first” time.

“Gap in the Clouds” by Yellow Days - In The Greatest Hits , Harriet travels back in time to one of her and Max’s happiest memories , a simple day at the beach with their dog. “Gap in the Clouds” by Yellow Days plays over the scene as the couple soaks up the sun and each other.

“Sémaphore” by Requin Chagrin - David used sharing joint custody over their Roxy Music record as an excuse to get Harriet’s number and spend time with her in The Greatest Hits . When she arrives at the café to meet David, “Sémaphore” by French artist Requin Chagrin is playing, but she doesn’t hear it as she keeps her headphones on to prevent any accidental episodes.

“Running” by Helado Negro - Harriet told David she always wrote headphones because of a medical condition. While David was curious to know more, she didn’t offer much of an explanation. Eventually, Harriet took off her headphones and gave them to David, so he could hear "Running" by Helado Negro, which showed a sense of trust in him , even very early on in their relationship.

“Music Sounds Better with You” by NEIL FRANCIS - Unfortunately for Harriet, the sweet moment between her and David in The Greatest Hits quickly turned sour when the song in the café changed to “Music Sounds Better with You” by NEIL FRANCIS. When Harriet heard the song, she ran to the bathroom, where she was taken back to another memory with Max. This time, she turned the song off as soon as possible to return to the present.

“Make Me Believe in You” by Patti Jo - After the incident at the café in The Greatest Hits , Harriet visited Morris and told him all about it, as he was the only one who knew about her strange condition. Morris wants Harriet to take a chance on David and stop living in the past , leading to an argument between the friends. In the background, the 1973 soul record “Make Me Believe in You” written by Curtis Mayfield and sung by Patti Jo plays in his apartment.

“Ooh I Love It (Love Break)” by The Salsoul Orchestra - Harriet eventually takes some of Morris’ advice by inviting David to a party where Morris is DJing. When they arrive, Morris is playing The Salsoul Orchestra’s disco hip-hop song “Ooh I Love It (Love Break).”

“Feel the Music” by Hifi Sean feat. Celeda - At the party in The Greatest Hits , Morris mixes “Ooh I Love It” into “Feel the Music” by Hifi Sean and Celeda. David and Harriet dance the night away to the fun disco track.

“Say Yes to Heaven” by Lana Del Rey - After kissing for the first time in The Greatest Hits , David and Harriet are confronted with their respective grief when they get home, with David having lost both of his parents in quick succession. The Lana Del Rey song that plays over the scene is about saying yes to someone and something new , representing the start of a new chapter for them both.

“I’m Like a Bird” by Nelly Furtado - While driving around with Harriet in The Greatest Hits , David turns on the radio to Nelly Furtado’s “I’m Like A Bird.” Initially, Harriet keeps her headphones on, but when she hears what David’s singing along to, she takes them off and they sing the catchy chorus together .

“Heybb!” by binki - The radio is always a risk for Harriet in The Greatest Hits . Once again, Harriet was sent back at one of the worst possible moments as she was making out with David in his car and they accidentally turned the radio on to “Heybb!” by binki, one of her and Max’s songs. Though she quickly turned the song off, it obviously ruined the mood.

“Friday I’m In Love” by Phoebe Bridgers - With all the mishaps in The Greatest Hits , Harriet finally tells David about her musical time traveling. He initially doesn’t believe her and also has a hard time with how hung up she is on her deceased boyfriend . After leaving, David has a drink on his roof and tries to process everything while Phoebe Bridgers’ slowed-down, stripped cover of “Friday I’m In Love” by The Cure plays.

“Powa” by Tune-Yards - After David left, Harriet put on “Powa” by Tune-Yards to be with Max again. As the song plays in The Greatest Hits , she asks him what he thinks will happen to them , and he tells her to just take everything one day at a time, not knowing their days are numbered.

“Fantasia in D Minor” by Mozart - When Harriet goes to David’s parents’ furniture store in The Greatest Hits , she realizes she’s been there before with Max. To prove to David that she’s actually time traveling and to try and save Max, she puts on “Fantasia in D Minor” by Mozart. Though she couldn’t save Max, she crossed paths with David briefly, and Harriet was able to leave a note in an old desk for him, proving to David that she traveled back in time .

“New Romance” by Beach House - Another song that plays while Harriet and David are driving is “New Romance” by Beach House. The dream pop song’s title is fitting , Harriet and David embark on a new romance in The Greatest Hits .

“Never Lost” by Nelly Furtado & Ryan Lott - The only original song written for The Greatest Hits is “Never Lost” by Nelly Furtado and Ryan Lott. The song plays after Harriet decides to see what her life would be like if she never loved and lost Max. Rather than working for the library in this alternate timeline, Harriet is helping Nelly Furtado mix her new album , with the singer even making an appearance in the film.

“Alternate World (Alternate Life)” by Kishi Bashi & Son Lux - The final song in The Greatest Hits end credits is “Alternate World (Alternate Life) by Kishi Bashi and Son Lux. The title and the lyrics represent the film’s ending, with Harriet choosing to see what would happen if she changed the future rather than trying to change the past.

John Mellencamp reminds Savannah audiences why he is one of America's greatest songwriters

I f you lived in Indiana during the 1980s, nothing is more definitive of that decade than Larry Byrd, David Letterman, the movie “Hoosiers,” and John Mellencamp. Touchstones of the time, they made it tangibly cooler to tell people you were from "The Crossroads of America."

But growing up in a small farming community, the songs and success of John Mellencamp were what hit differently. Though too young to catch a concert in the glory days of his biggest hits, my hog-raising and tractor-driving older cousins, uncles and grandfather had an affinity for Mellencamp. He made us all feel seen.

His advocacy work with Farm Aid beginning in the mid-1980s came at a time when nearly all my family struggled to keep their livelihoods. Mellencamp understood. Afterall, he was from Seymour, Indiana, just down the road. He was one of us.

On Tuesday, April 23, John Mellencamp concluded his two-month, 27-city “Live And In Person Tour” at the Johnny Mercer Theater in Savannah. And I knew this time, I had to hear him.

Streams of fans, mostly Baby Boomers and GenX-ers, poured through security. The mood was lively, happy, lots of hugs and smiling while waiting to pass into the building. One of the venue’s house photographers revealed that all but maybe a dozen of the theater’s 2,500 seats sold. Tonight’s show was a near sellout.

In lieu of an opening act, a 25-minute montage kicked things off promptly at 8 p.m. Moments from black-and-white classics ― “The Misfits,” “Giant,” “Grapes of Wrath,” “Hud,” and “Streetcar Named Desire” ― cast a mood of reflective nostalgia in stark contrast to the night’s first rocker, where Mellencamp snarled a chorus in characteristic rasp, “I ain’t got no friends.” Then the ensemble went immediately into edgy hit “Paper and Fire.” The audience was ablaze, standing and singing along.

And Mellencamp, clad in navy coveralls, his outfit of choice these days, sang full throttle, gesticulated with his guitar, and moved with palpable presence. At age 72, this man just keeps rocking. And I wished dearly my grandfather could stand with me watching our own Indiana boy “who’d done good.”

Toward the middle of the show, he broke away from the band and perched on the edge of the stage with acoustic guitar and harmonica. Always true to his convictions, he spoke about the past decade’s alarming increase in homelessness across the nation then shared a story about a barefoot girl on the street in Portland with whom he’d had a brief conversation.

When Mellencamp offered a $100 bill, she quickly grabbed it and ran, calling out “I’ve always depended on the kindness of strangers,” harkening immediately back to the night’s earlier film montage which included the same line from “Streetcar Named Desire.”

All of that to set up his song “The Eyes of Portland” with focused chorus, “all of these homeless/where do they come from/in this land of plenty/where nothing gets done/to help those who are empty and unable to run/your tears and prayers won’t help the homeless.”

Another evening standout, revealing Mellencamp’s depth and reverence, included a piece more like performance art. Long-time bandmember and violinist, Lisa Germano, introduced a spoken-word version of the song “The Real Life” from Mellencamp’s 1987 release “Lonesome Jubilee.” She explained how John had been close with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward for many years, and he’d asked Joanne to read his lyrics over a musical arrangement. And so, Germano and keyboardist and accordion player, John Cascella, wove a stirring duet beneath a recording of Woodward’s haunting voice.

Soon after, the band was back onstage with the audience dancing and singing to Mellencamp’s rally cry “Rain on the Scarecrow.” To be sure, this was a banger among my family in the ‘80s and beyond, and I remember my cousins cranking the boombox in the pole barn when it was on the radio. The night’s live, extended performance did not disappoint.

A little later when he introduced his band, he brought out his 29-year-old son, Hud, with whom he briefly hammed it up as the audience applauded.

The nuances of the evening were beginning to come together. The opening film montage with paralleling iconic script lines, then Paul Newman as the star of 1963 classic “Hud,” and Mellencamp’s own working class coveralls—all a way to honor many of the things and people whom John Mellencamp not only loves but who also have helped shape who he is. Don’t be fooled by all the F-bombs he may drop during a performance. At the heart of it, Mellencamp is a thoughtful, deeply artistic, and caring person.

The night concluded with songs “Cherry Bomb” and “Hurt So Good,” which had the audience once more on their feet and singing along.

Mellencamp’s politics might not resonate with everyone, but the man writes catchy, heartfelt songs and to this day, delivers them with fierce conviction alongside luminaries Woody Guthrie, John Prine and Johnny Cash. When you have an opportunity to see John Mellencamp, you must. He simply is one of America’s greatest songwriters.
