  • j + 19 Jex Ter 2015-04-12 21:06:24 Although it seemed to be an innocent mistake, the Skipper was a scurvy rogue who knew there was going to be a bad squall. His diabolical plan was to "shipwreck" the Minnow (nudge nudge, wink wink), ransom Thurston Howle III for all his loot, and being a completely unscrupulous cad, have his way with Lovely and Ginger as well! (A.K.A.: bonus booty). The Skipper's evil plot was foiled because he had underestimated his 1st mate. Gilligan was actually a brilliant detective who had been investigating nefarious goings-on at The Tropic Port, and had traced them to the Skipper and his gang of scoundrels. His bumbling goofy demeanor (a la Colombo) and seemingly silly high-jinks enabled him to thwart the Skipper at every turn, while at the same time keeping the other castaways from becoming alarmed. The Professor got hip to what was going down pretty quick, and assisted Gilligan in any way he could. Although most of the engineering ideas came from the Professor (coconut telephones, etc.), he actually had to consult Gilligan for a lot of his more hard-core science diversions, since Gilligan had PhDs in both nuclear physics and organic chemistry. Most of the sexual tension in the show arose from the 3-way love triangle between Gilligan, the Professor, and May Ann, who was a vacationing pole dancer from Iowa. Add your reply

Well, they got all that and more. They were all enjoying the cruise and when winds driffed in creating high swells of water, the party was over. At once they sheltered themselves with what little they could find, said their prayers and kissed their butts goodbye. On the other hand, the skipper being the salty dog that he was, somehow kept his vessle afloat till it crashed on a rather large bogg. You know the rest of the story. Or, you could simply sum it all up and say "never head out without asking the captain what the weather radar said" Rob s. Add your reply

  • g + 7 glenndgreenwood 2018-01-21 17:00:59 Have a seat and listen to this story. It's a story about an unfortunate sailing excursion that was supposed to last just a few hours. It all started on a small sailing vessel (S. S. Minnow) at a port in Hawaii. The first mate (whose name was Gilligan [it's unknown if it was his first or last name]) was an experienced, but somewhat klutzy man. The Captain (Jonas Grumby A. K. A "Skipper') was a large, courageous man. The marine experience between the two sailors would turn out to be invaluable to the survival of the story to come. On this particular day, the Captain and his First Mate were taking five passengers on a sight-seeing tour. Among the passengers were a wealthy couple (Thurston Howell iii) and his wife (Eunice "Lovee" Wentworth Howell), a beautiful movie star (Ginger Grant), a professor (Roy Hinckley), and a beautiful, yet modest, farm girl from Winfield, Kansas (Mary Ann Summers). A couple hours into the cruise, a storm set in, setting the sailing vessel off course. The small vessel was tossed about in the tumultuous storm. The winds were blowing hard. Lighting pierced the sky and the thunder boomed loudly. The rain was relentless. Their little sight-seeing tour suddenly took a turn for the worst. The Captain and his First Mate fought hard to keep the vessel afloat. They had to assure the safety of their passengers at any cost. The storm lasted though out the night, leaving the crew and her passengers exhausted. By storms end, the vessel was beached on an uncharted, desolate island. It was fortunate that the vessel had been beached because there was a gaping hole in the starboard hull). Had the Captain and his First Mate been any less experienced, everybody would certainly have perished. The castaways befriended one another and soon became their own little community. They utilized most everything they could get their hands on. They had no electricity, no method of transportation, not a single luxury. Like the life of Robinson Crusoe, survival was a constant uphill battle. They endured many hardships, but remained optimistic through out their many experiences. Join us here each week for another chapter in the life and times of the marooned castaways on "Gilligan's Island". Add your reply

15 Fateful Facts About Gilligan’s Island

By kara kovalchik | oct 20, 2015.

A scene from Gilligan's Island.

The final episode of Gilligan’s Island was broadcast on April 17, 1967. Though never a critical favorite, the show was still a solid ratings hit and the cast and crew had every expectation of returning in the fall for a fourth season. But at the last minute CBS needed to find some room on the schedule for Gunsmoke , the favorite show of Babe Paley, wife of network president William Paley. So Gilligan got the axe and, at least as far as viewers know, the cast is still stranded somewhere in the Pacific.

Forty-eight years after that final wrap party, however, Gilligan’s Island is still on the air. It was sold into syndication and has been broadcasting reruns continuously in 30 different languages around the world. Just sit right back and you’ll hear some tales of everyone’s favorite castaways.

1. IT WAS INTENDED TO BE A “METAPHORICAL SHAMING OF WORLD POLITICS.”

One day in a public speaking class at New York University, the professor had students compose an impromptu one-minute speech on this topic: If you were stranded on a desert island, what one item would you like to have? Sherwood Schwartz was a student in that class, and the question so intrigued him that it remained lodged in the back of his mind for many years.

After working for some time as a comedy writer for other shows, Schwartz decided to pitch his own idea for a sitcom. Thinking back to that desert island question, he thought it would make for an interesting dynamic to have a group of very dissimilar individuals stranded together and have to learn to live and work together. The island would be “a social microcosm and a metaphorical shaming of world politics in the sense that when necessary for survival, yes we can all get along,” Schwartz explained in Inside Gilligan's Island: From Creation to Syndication . Schwartz quickly discovered after his first few pitch meetings that words like “microcosm” and “metaphor” were not very helpful when trying to sell a comedy.

2. GILLIGAN’S FIRST NAME IS WILLY.

After getting a green light from CBS for the pilot, Schwartz went about assembling his cast. He chose the name of the bumbling first mate—Gilligan—from the Los Angeles telephone directory. Gilligan’s first name was never mentioned during the series, but according to Schwartz’s original notes, it was intended to be “Willy.” Yet Bob Denver always insisted that “Gilligan” was the character’s first name. “Almost every time I see Bob Denver we still argue,” Schwartz once admitted . “He thinks Gilligan is his first name, and I think it's his last name. Because in the original presentation, it's Willy Gilligan. But he doesn't believe it, and he doesn't want to discuss it. He insists the name is Gilligan.”

3. SCHWARTZ WANTED JERRY VAN DYKE TO PLAY GILLIGAN.

Jerry Van Dyke was Schwartz’s first choice to play the lead, but Van Dyke said that the pilot script was “the worst thing I’d ever read.” On the advice of his agent, Van Dyke accepted the lead in the short-lived (and critically panned) My Mother The Car instead. “I had a lot of problems with the agency, because they were trying to push me into taking [ Gilligan’s Island ],” Van Dyke recalled in an interview. “But that’s the joke: I turned it down and took My Mother the Car . But, again, it was really good, because I’d [have] been forever known as Gilligan. So that worked out, too!”

4. ALAN HALE GOT TO HIS AUDITION VIA HORSEBACK.

The Skipper was the toughest, and last, character to be cast. Schwartz auditioned dozens of actors (including Carroll O’Connor), but no one was quite right; he wanted someone strong and commanding, sometimes blustery and short-tempered, but able to show a genuine affection for Gilligan even when smacking him over the head with his hat. Alan Hale was filming Bullet for a Bad Man in St. George, Utah when he got the casting call for Gilligan and was unable to get time off for a screen test. So he had to sneak off set after a day of filming, which was no easy task. In Surviving Gilligan's Island: The Incredibly True Story of the Longest Three-Hour Tour in History , it was revealed that Hale made his way to Los Angeles to read a scene with Bob Denver via horseback, hitchhiking, airplane, and taxi cab. He reversed the process after the audition and made it back to Utah just in time to resume filming his western the next day.

5. THE ASSASSINATION OF JFK DELAYED PRODUCTION ON THE SERIES.

The pilot for the series was filmed over several days in November of 1963 on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. The last day of shooting was scheduled for November 23, 1963 in Honolulu Harbor for the scenes showing the S.S. Minnow embarking on its fateful three-hour tour. Late in the morning on November 22, a crew member ran to the set and announced that he’d just heard on the radio that President John F. Kennedy had been shot. As Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as President, it was announced that all military installations (including Honolulu Harbor) would be closed for the next two days as a period of mourning. Filming was delayed by several days as a result, and in the opening credits—as the Minnow cruises the harbor—the American flag can be seen flying at half-mast in the background.

6. THE MILLIONAIRE’S WIFE REALLY WAS A MILLIONAIRE.

Natalie Schafer, who played Mrs. Lovey Howell—and allegedly only accepted the invitation to play Mrs. Howell because it meant a free trip to Hawaii to film the pilot—was a real-life millionaire. During her marriage to actor Louis Calhern, the couple had invested heavily in Beverly Hills real estate at a time when a house on Rodeo Drive could be purchased for $50,000.

When she died in 1991, Schafer bequeathed a large chunk of her fortune to her favorite teacup poodle (she had no children), with instructions for that money to be donated to the Motion Picture and Television Hospital after the pooch’s passing. Said hospital now has a "Natalie Schafer Wing." Rumor has it that Schafer also left a tidy sum to Gilligan’s Island co-star Dawn Wells (Mary Ann), who lived with and helped care for Natalie as she battled breast cancer.

7. DAWN WELLS STILL GETS PAID FOR GILLIGAN’S ISLAND .

All of the actors signed contracts that guaranteed them a certain amount of money per original episode plus a residual payment for the first five repeats of each episode. This was a pretty standard contract in 1965, when as a rule most TV shows were only rerun during the summer months as a placeholder between seasons.

Even though the word “syndication” wasn’t yet a standard term in the TV production glossary, Dawn Wells’ then-husband, talent agent Larry Rosen, advised her to ask for an amendment to that residual clause in her contract, and the producers granted it, never thinking the series would be on the air nearly 50 years later. As a result, the estate of the late Sherwood Schwartz (who reportedly pocketed around $90 million during his lifetime from his little microcosm-on-an-island show) and Dawn Wells are the only two folks connected to the show who still receive money from it.

8. RAQUEL WELCH AUDITIONED FOR MARY ANN.

The programming executives at CBS were underwhelmed by the pilot , but it managed to impress three different test audiences enough that they put the series on the fall schedule. But before filming for the first episode began, they had a few caveats—the first of which was replacing three cast members who had tested the “lowest” with audiences: John Gabriel , who played The Professor, a high school science teacher; Kit Smythe, who played Ginger as a secretary, not a movie star; and Nancy McCarthy, who played Bunny, yet another secretary. It was decided to make Ginger an actress, and Bunny was replaced by wholesome farm girl Mary Ann. One actress who auditioned for Mary Ann’s part was a young Raquel Welch, though something about her just didn’t scream “girl next door.”

9. THE SHOW’S STARS FOUND FANS IN THE STRANGEST PLACES.

Years after the show stopped filming (it’s never really been “off the air”), the cast members found fans in the most unusual places. For example, in 2001 Russell Johnson was asked to speak at a biochemical conference in San Francisco. “There were four or five hundred PhDs there, and every one of them was a Gilligan’s Island fan,” he recalled . Bob Denver took his wife to dinner at Chicago’s elegant Pump Room once and the trio of musicians immediately switched from playing their semi-classical chamber music to “The Ballad of Gilligan’s Island.” Dawn Wells was vacationing in the Solomon Islands in 1990 when she and some friends canoed to a remote island in the area that had no running water or electricity. The visitors were ushered to a hut to meet the village chief, and Wells was stunned when “The chief's wife said, ‘I know you. In 1979, I was going to nursing school in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, and I used to come home and watch you in black-and-white!’”

10. THE SKIPPER BROKE HIS ARM FALLING OUT OF A COCONUT TREE.

Alan Hale was an old-school “the show must go on” kind of actor. In Inside Gilligan’s Island , Schwartz recalled chatting with Hale at the season one wrap party when the actor, as jolly and convivial as always, happened to comment that now that shooting was completed, he could take care of his arm. When Schwartz asked what was wrong with his arm, Hale nonchalantly replied: “Oh, I broke it a few weeks ago.” He went on to explain that three weeks prior he had missed the crash pads slightly when he fell out of a coconut tree for a scene and had smashed his right arm on the stage. He hadn’t sought medical treatment because he didn’t want to disrupt the filming schedule. Schwartz was dumbfounded; “How did you manage to haul coconuts and lift Bob Denver with a broken arm?” “It wasn’t easy,” Hale admitted.

11. NATALIE SCHAFER DID HER OWN STUNTS.

Even though Natalie Schafer was in her mid-60s when Gilligan’s Island was filmed, she insisted on doing the majority of her own stunts—and never complained about jumping into the lagoon or sinking in fake quicksand. In 1965, she told “Let’s Be Beautiful” columnist Arlene Dahl that she kept in shape by swimming in her backyard pool—in the nude—and by periodically following her special “ice cream diet,” which consisted of eating nothing but one quart of ice cream (spread out over three meals) daily. She would lose three pounds in five days following that regime.

12. THE MILLIONAIRE WAS A CHEAPSKATE.

Jim Backus, who played Mr. Howell, was beloved by his castmates. In addition to being the source of endless ribald jokes and a willing coach to the less experienced actors on how to ad-lib or deliver a punch line, he was also notoriously cheap. In What Would Mary Ann Do? A Guide to Life , Dawn Wells recalled how during the show’s first season he would often invite her and Natalie Schafer out to lunch … only to realize that he had left his wallet back at the studio when the check came. Before the cast departed for summer hiatus after the wrap party, Schafer presented Backus with a bill for a little over $300—the total he owed for all those meals.

13. THE PROFESSOR AND MARY ANN WEREN’T IN THE ORIGINAL OPENING CREDITS.

In the first season of Gilligan’s Island , the opening credits ended with a picture of Ginger as the singers crooned “the moo-vie star” followed by a hastily added “and the rest.” The text accompanying the photo proclaimed: “and also starring Tina Louise as ‘Ginger.’” (The only other cast member whose character name was listed in the credits was Jim Backus, a show business veteran and very recognizable character actor whose resume was longer than Ginger’s evening gown.) Louise had had it written into her contract that, along with the “also starring” billing, no one would follow her name in the credits.

Once the show was renewed for a second season, champion-for-the-underdog Bob Denver approached the producers and asked that Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells be added to the opening credits , stating that their characters were just as vital to the dynamic as any of the others. When the producers mentioned the clause in Louise’s contract, Denver countered by referring to a clause in his own contract which stated that he could have his name placed anywhere in the credits he liked. He threatened to have his name moved to last place, so an agreement was hammered out with Louise, a revised theme song was recorded, and Johnson and Wells took their rightful place in the opening montage.

14. THE LAGOON WAS LOCATED IN STUDIO CITY, CALIFORNIA.

The lagoon set was specially built for the show by CBS on their Studio City lot in 1964. They’d originally tried filming two episodes in Malibu, but they had a lot of downtime due to fog. Of course, filming at the studio had its own set of problems; sometimes filming had to be halted when traffic noise could be heard from the nearby Ventura Freeway. And the water temperature would hover around 40 degrees during the winter months, forcing Bob Denver to wear a wetsuit under his Gilligan costume. In 1995, the lagoon was turned into an employee parking lot .

15. THE MOVIE STAR WANTED TO BE THE TELEVISION STAR.

In the January 23, 1965 edition of TV Guide , an article about Bob Denver mentioned the on-set tension between Tina Louise and the rest of the castaways: “Denver will not say why he and the glamorous Tina [Louise] do not get along, nor will any of the castaways–they just ignore her, and she ignores them. Between scenes, while the other six principals chat and tell jokes together, she sits off by herself. And recently when Denver was asked to pose for pictures with her, he adamantly refused. Part of Louise’s dissatisfaction with the series was that she had expected to be the star of the show. (Her agent had allegedly pitched it to her as the story of an actress stranded on an island with six other people.)

Bob Denver eventually capitulated to network pressure and agreed to do a photo shoot with Louise for a TV Guide cover in May of 1965—but only if Dawn Wells was included. To his chagrin, Wells was cropped out of the final image.

How pop culture influences us, how much luggage do you need for a three-hour trip the story of gilligan’s island.

Today we begin a month-long look at Gilligan’s Island .  I admit I was never a big Gilligan fan, but there are so many dedicated viewers that I decided it was time to take a closer look.  Today we look at the series, and in the following weeks, we’ll look at the actors who appeared in the cast.

Gilligan's Island (US TV Series)

Gilligan’s Island was created by one of my favorite producers, Sherwood Schwartz. It aired from September 1964 till April of 1967, producing 98 episodes and a ton of other versions of the show which aired as new series or television movies, including the hard-to-believe Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan’s Island .

THE HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS ON GILLIGAN'S ISLAND, Alan Hale, Jr., Bob Denver, Curly Neal, 1981. (c) Uni

The premise of the show was that on a three-hour tour, the SS Minnow became shipwrecked on a deserted island after a typhoon. Seven castaways now must make the island their home as they wait to be rescued. We have the captain of the ship, the Skipper (Alan Hale), his first-mate Gilligan (Bob Denver), millionaire Thurston Howell III (Jim Backus) and his wife Lovie (Natalie Schafer), movie star Ginger Grant (Tina Louise), the girl next door Mary Ann (Dawn Wells), and the Professor (Russell Johnson). All they have is a transistor radio and whatever they had on the ship.

gilligan8

CBS gave the okay for Schwarz to film the pilot. Schwartz wanted Jerry Van Dyke for Gilligan, but Van Dyke said it was “the worst thing” he ever read. He turned down the script and accepted the role of Dave Crabtree on My Mother the Car .

gilligan1

The pilot was titled “Marooned.” Seven characters were in the pilot, but only the Skipper, Gilligan and the Howells were going to be in the ongoing series. These were the only castaways mentioned in the pilot theme song. The final day of filming for the pilot was November 22, 1963, the day of Kennedy’s assassination. The staff was crowded around a radio between scenes trying to get the updated news. In the opening of the episodes in the first season, as the Minnow leaves the harbor, you can see an American flag flying at half staff as a tribute to Kennedy.

After seeing the pilot, several changes were requested. The first change was to the theme song. Originally it was written by the talented John Williams and sung by Schwartz and was a Calypso-sounding song. The lyrics were quite different from the song we recognize today. The background music and laugh track were the same for both the pilot and the ensuing shows. The three characters who were not part of the series at first were the same characters that later appeared . . . sort of. The Professor was a high school teacher played by John Gabriel, Ginger was an actress but also a secretary played by Kit Smythe, and Mary Ann was Bunny, a dumb blonde stereotype played by Nancy McCarthy.

gilligan4

Because so many changes happened between the pilot and the first episode, the pilot was not aired until 1992 when it was broadcast on TBS.

The first season was filmed in black and white but later colorized for syndication The second and third seasons were filmed in color.

While the pilot had been filmed in Hawaii,  the show was taped at a lagoon built at the CBS Radford Studios in Studio City, Los Angeles. The film was supposed to be shot in Malibu, but it was too foggy. The Ventura Freeway was nearby and when traffic was too loud, production had to halt. The lagoon would become a parking lot in 1995.

There were four boats that “played” the part of the SS Minnow. One was used in the opening credits which had been rented in Honolulu for the filming of the pilot. One was used in the opening credits for the final two years. One was shown in beach scenes and the fourth was built at the studio.

giligan5

The eventual theme song was called “The Ballad of Gilligan’s Isle,” and was written by Schwartz and George Wyle. There were two versions, one for the first season which referred to Mary Ann and the Professor as “the rest,” and another version for the last two seasons which specified “The Professor and Mary Ann.” Dawn Wells credits Bob Denver for going to bat for her and Johnson threatening to take his name out of the song if they were not added.

For the opening credits, the song was:

Just sit right back

And you’ll hear a tale

A tale of a fateful trip

That started from this tropic port

Aboard this tiny ship

The mate was a mighty sailing man

The skipper brave and sure

Five passengers set sail that day

For a 3-hour tour, a 3-hour tour

The weather started getting rough

The tiny ship was tossed

If not for the courage of the fearless crew

The Minnow would be lost, the Minnow would be lost

The ship set ground on the shore of this

Uncharted desert isle

With Gilligaaan

The Skipper too

A millionaire, and his wife

A movie star

The Proffessor and Mary Ann

Here on Gilligan’s Isle

For closing credits, the lyrics were:

So, this is the tale of our castaways

They’re here for a long long time

They’ll have to make the best of things

It’s an uphill climb

The first mate and his skipper too

Will do their very best

To make the others comfortable

In the tropic island nest

No phone, no lights, no motor cars

Not a single luxury

Like Robinson Crusoe

It’s primitive as can be

So, join us here each week my friends

You’ll sure to get a smile

From 7 stranded castaways

Here on Gilligan’s Isle!

gilligan9

Most of the episodes can be categorized into five themes. (1) One of the castaways make some useful object from local material. These could be anything from their bamboo huts to hot water pipes to a stethoscope to a pedal-powered car. They just could not produce anything that could get them off the island! (2) Visitors would often appear on the island. We’ll learn about some of the guest stars on the show in our last monthly blog. None of these visitors ever help the characters get rescued. Unbelievably, Ginger, Gilligan, and Mr. Howell all had look-alikes end up on the island, causing trouble for them. (3) Dreams occur a lot. When we see them, all the characters are part of the dream.  Apparently, the hot weather made them sleepy. (4) News from the outside world, usually heard on the radio, caused trouble on the island. (5) Strange objects showed up on the island from time to time like a WWII mine or radioactive vegetable seeds.

gilligan11

Despite many corny scripts and imagination-stretching storylines, the show received solid ratings all three years. When it went into syndication, it grew in popularity. Many of the stars from Gilligan play their characters from the show in other series’ television episodes in the 1970s and 1980s.

gilligan6

The last episode was called “Gilligan the Goddess.” Unfortunately, the castaways were not rescued. A fourth season was expected or perhaps Schwartz would have saved them. In season three, the show was on Monday nights competing with The Monkees .  Schwartz was assured it would be back because it had higher ratings than The Monkees . Gunsmoke , which aired Saturday nights, was given the potential ax. However, CBS president William Paley pressured the executives who then moved Gunsmoke to Monday night and cancelled Gilligan’s Island .

One funny fact I read about was how often the US Coast Guard received telegrams from citizens who were pleading for them to make an effort to rescue the cast from Gilligan’s Island. The Coast Guard sent these telegrams to Schwartz.

gilligan13

I can’t say that after learning more about the show, it made my favorites list, but there are definitely worse shows on television than Gilligan’s Island . If it was one of your favorites, you’ll enjoy hearing about the stars who played the castaways. I certainly learned they were just as interesting a group of people in real life as they were on the isle they called home for three years.

I didn’t see Gilligan’s Island when it originally aired. I was probably in bed. I watched the reruns after school in the 70s. I don’t recall ever hearing the closing song but I can easily sing the opening song. Ha. I like the Coast Guard story… people are crazy.

Take a tour through the entire history of human culture.

This three-hour trail takes you through our major galleries, showcasing the most popular objects on display.

Lower and Ground floors

1. the sloane astrolabe ( room 1 ).

Crafted around 1300, this astrolabe is named for Hans Sloane, whose collection formed the basis of the British Museum. It's the earliest and largest English astrolabe to have survived from the Middle Ages and shows a knowledge of Arabic astronomy and instrumentation.

2. The Holy Thorn Reliquary

2. the holy thorn reliquary ( room 2a ).

Lavishly decorated with jewels and originating in France around 1400, this reliquary contains a single thorn purported to be taken from the biblical crown of thorns. It's one of a small number of goldsmiths' works surviving from the courts of the Valois royal family of medieval France.

3. Assyrian lion hunt reliefs (Room 10)

3. assyrian lion hunt reliefs ( room 10 ).

Originating from the ancient Mesopotamian city of Nineveh, near modern-day Mosul in Iraq, these reliefs were carved during the reign of Ashurbanipal – the last great Assyrian king – and rank among the finest known achievements of Assyrian art.

4. Parthenon sculptures (Room 18)

4. parthenon sculptures ( room 18 ).

Carved about 2,500 years ago, these ancient Greek sculptures adorned the Parthenon, a temple on the Athenian Acropolis that once contained a colossal gold and ivory statue of the goddess Athena.

5. The Rosetta Stone (replica within Room 1)

5. the rosetta stone ( room 4 ).

The key that unlocked the hieroglyphic language of ancient Egypt, the Rosetta Stone is the Museum's most popular exhibit and one of the cornerstones of modern Egyptology. Don't leave without seeing it for yourself.

6. Bust of Ramesses the Great (Room 4)

6. bust of ramesses the great ( room 4 ).

This section of a larger statue, which weighs 7.5 tonnes, once sat in the Ramesseum, in Egypt, venerating Ramesses II, one of the greatest Egyptian pharaohs. Coverage of the bust's transportation to the UK is believed to have inspired Shelley's famous sonnet,  Ozymandias .

7. The Ife Head

7. the ife head ( room 25 ).

A brass casting, maybe 600 years old, probably depicting Ooni, the leader of the West African Kingdom of Ife. Lifelike depictions of people such as those from Ife are unique in African art of the period and reflect important aspects of this landmark culture that existed by the lower Niger River.

8. Hoa Hakananai'a (Room 24)

8. hoa hakananai'a ( room 24 ).

This statue, known as Hoa Hakananai'a, comes from the ritual centre of Orongo on Rapa Nui (Easter Island). Carved from basalt, it has carvings on the back associated with the islanders' birdman cult. It is of great significance to the people of Rapa Nui today.

9. Aztec serpent (Room 27)

9. aztec serpent ( room 27 ).

Created in what is now Mexico in the 15th or 16th century, this extraordinary double-headed serpent sculpture is mostly made of turquoise pieces over a wooden base and probably had ritual significance.

Upper floor

10. oxus treasure ( room 52 ).

Stunning examples of gold and silver metalwork found in the Oxus river, on the border of Afghanistan and Tajikistan, which date back to the Achaemenid Empire of the 5th to 3rd century BC. Together, the pieces form one of the British Museum's great collections.

11. Mold ceremonial gold cape

11. mold ceremonial gold cape ( room 51 ).

At the centre of a stone-lined grave, found in Mold in North Wales in 1833, was a crushed gold cape around the fragmentary remains of a skeleton. Strips of bronze and numbers of amber beads were recovered, but only one of the beads reached the British Museum.

This cape is one of the finest examples of prehistoric sheet-gold working and is quite unique in form and design. The cape was restored at the British Museum during the 1960s. Before that, no one really knew its exact original shape. It dates back to the European Bronze Age.

12. Basse Yutz flagons

12. basse yutz flagons ( room 50 ).

These ceremonial drinking vessels were discovered in France and produced in the 5th century BC. Once considered too sophisticated to be genuine, their manufacture points to trading links between distant areas of Europe and cultural links with Egypt.

13. The Hinton St Mary Mosaic

13. the hinton st mary mosaic ( room 49 ).

Discovered in Dorset in 1963 and originally part of a Roman-period mosaic floor, the Hinton St. Mary Mosaic is believed to show an image of Jesus Christ. If so, it would be one of the earliest surviving depictions, dating back to the 4th century.

14. Jade terrapin

14. jade terrapin ( room 43 ).

Carved from a single piece of jade, this Terrapin was made in Mughal India, during the early 17th century, for the court of the Emperor Jahangir. It was discovered at the bottom of a well during excavations in 1803 and was subsequently bequeathed to the Museum in 1830.

15. The Sutton Hoo ship burial

15. the sutton hoo ship burial ( room 41 ).

Found undisturbed in 1939, the many artefacts of the Sutton Hoo burial date back to 7th century Britain and are popularly believed to have belonged to an Anglo-Saxon king. See one of the most magnificent archaeological discoveries ever made in the UK for yourself.

16. Lewis Chessmen (Room 40)

16. lewis chessmen ( room 40 ).

Fashioned from walrus ivory and brimming with personality, the Lewis Chessmen were made in the 12th century and discovered buried in a sand bank off the Scottish island of Lewis in 1831. They have been described as the most famous chess pieces in the world.

17. Mechanical galleon

17. mechanical galleon ( room 39 ).

Constructed in around 1585 in southern Germany, this elaborately but precisely designed nef (a type of table ornament) is made of gilded brass. When it worked, it would have displayed a range of automated movements – rolling forward on its wheels, emitting smoke from the cannons, and playing music – as well as functioning as a clock.

18. Royal Game of Ur (Room 56)

18. royal game of ur ( room 56 ).

Originally played in the early third millennium BC and once popular across the Middle East, the rules of this two-player strategy boardgame were lost to history until British Museum curator Irving Finkel decoded a cuneiform tablet containing the instructions in the early 1980s.

19. The Flood Tablet

19. the flood tablet ( room 55 ).

The Assyrian King Ashurbanipal (reigned 669–631BC) collected a library of thousands of cuneiform tablets in his palace at Nineveh. The best known of these was the story of Gilgamesh, a legendary ruler of Uruk, and his search for immortality. The Epic of Gilgamesh is a huge work, the longest piece of literature in Akkadian (the language of Babylonia and Assyria). This, the 11th tablet of the Epic, describes the meeting of Gilgamesh with Utnapishtim. Like Noah in the Hebrew Bible, Utnapishtim had been forewarned of a plan by the gods to send a great flood. He built a boat and loaded it with all his precious possessions, his kith and kin, domesticated and wild animals and skilled craftsmen of every kind.

20. Sphinx of Taharqo

20. sphinx of taharqo ( room 65 ).

This statue was found in Temple T at Kawa, in Upper Nubia (Sudan). Sphinxes are associated with the sun god and are a symbol of the immense power of the Egyptian king. The human head of this sphinx is adorned with two uraei, the symbols of kingship. The face is that of Taharqo, whose name appears in the cartouche on the chest. Taharqo was one of the kings of Kush who conquered and then ruled Egypt as the 25th Dynasty (about 747–656 BC).

21. Mummy of Katebet (Room 63)

21. mummy of katebet ( room 63 ).

One of the most-studied mummies in the Museum, Katebet was a Chantress of Amun, and would have sung and performed music during rituals. Both the mummy and her accoutrements are incredibly well preserved, despite dating back to 1300 BC.

22. Samurai armour (Room 92–94)

22. samurai armour ( room 93 ).

Armour and weaponry defined the samurai's authority on the battlefield. This complete, matching set of armour was produced for a member of the powerful Mori family, who were samurai lords based in western Japan.

Will Tortured Poets Be Added to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour?

Portrait of Alejandra Gularte

We are less than a fortnight away from Taylor Swift’ s Eras Tour arriving across the pond in Paris, France. We are also in the middle of Swift’s latest era The Tortured Poets Department , that’s filled with 31 brand spanking new songs. How is she going to fit them into the upcoming concerts? That’s way too many only to be played during Swift’s surprise song set, where she sings two songs acoustically on piano and guitar. She only has fifty shows in Europe, so it would take up 31% of the acoustic set if she decided to savor them all for the latter half of the show. But Swift’s too much of a mastermind for that. This leg of the tour only had one opener, Paramore, meaning more possible stage time for Swift. Could she add her newest era to an already 3-hour and 15-minute concert? Here’s all the evidence we’ve collected as to why Tortured Poets could be added to the Eras Tour.

Ah, YouTube shorts. Probably one of the most annoying features added to the platform as it floods the subscription feed with short-form videos on a site that thrives in long form content. But it is now our first piece of evidence. Looking closer at the 15 second video of Swift rehearsing the concert, you can see her leaning against a railing that looks like… The Torture Poets Department logo?

the three hour tour

She’s wearing what we can assume to be a lilac skirt, which is also seen in another YouTube Shorts video and mentioned in “imgonnagetyouback.” Below is a closer look at her heels, which are very similar to the same shoes she wears in the “Fortnight” music video. Now, why would she need to practice in different shoes if not for a new set?

Our last piece of Shorts evidence shows dancers wearing black hats and holding canes. Now, after what feels like countless viewings of the Eras Tour movie, I do not remember seeing Swift’s dancers with either of those items, nor doing any of those moves with Swift at the center.

the three hour tour

In March 2023, Swift, similarly to the “Fortnight” challenge, shared bits and pieces of her life in a TikTok , where she showed different colored mics from the Eras Tour, including a white one, which we haven’t seen on tour yet.

Over a year later, the white microphone has made its way back into Swift’s hand, possibly for a Tortured Poets appearance.

the three hour tour

The Anthology announcement echos a similar message that Swift shares on the Eras tour. Right before she plays “Lover,” she tells the crowd some variation: “These songs maybe started out being about my life, but my goal, my dream is that by the end of the night, they’ll be about your life.” And now for her latest album release, Swift writes, “And now the story isn’t mine anymore… it’s all yours.” Swift loves to create parallels between her new music and her previous work. Can this be an Easter Egg for what’s to come?

Central Park was rocked by two shocking attacks in a 24-hour period – including a man held up at gunpoint and a woman assaulted by a creep who demanded “give me sex.”

A 42-year-old man was taking photos inside the iconic greenspace at East 59th Street and East Drive around 6:10 a.m. Friday when a callous trio approached him, police and law enforcement sources said.

A man was assaulted and robbed by three males by The Pond in Central Park in Manhattan, NY on April 26, 2024

One of them pointed a gun at his head, while the other two punched him in the face, cops said.

The crew made off with two cell phones and a wallet, authorities said.

The suspects then ran off, heading north on the bike path toward Swan Lake.

The victim was left with minor facial injuries, and was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

No arrests have been made.

About 12 hours earlier, a fiend accosted a 28-year-old woman at West 97th Street and West Drive, cops said.

The perv stopped the woman in her tracks around 7:20 p.m. Thursday, grabbed her by the arm and demanded, “Give me your phone, give me your wallet, give me sex,” authorities said.

He then slugged her in the face, knocking her to the ground — before grabbing her iPhone 11, police said.

At some point, he repeatedly rubbed his arm on the woman’s breast and said, “I want to have sex with you,” law enforcement sources said.

The man — who cops say is about 5-foot-9 with curly short black hair, wearing all black — ran off and had not been caught by Friday morning.

The woman refused medical attention, cops said.

The NYPD’s Special Victims Unit is investigating the case.

Here Are the First Week Numbers for Future and Metro Boomin's 'We Still Don't Trust You'

The Atlanta rap music duo already have a No. 1 album with 'We Don't Trust You,' which was released three weeks before its sequel.

Future  and  Metro Boomin  have another chart-topping album with  We Still Don't Trust You .

According to  Billboard , the duo's latest album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, with 127,500 equivalent album units earned in its first week. The album is Future's tenth and Metro's fifth No. 1 on the chart.

We Still Don't Trust You  was released on April 12 and features appearances by The Weeknd, Brownstone, Ty Dolla Sign, J. Cole, Lil Baby, and ASAP Rocky. It serves as a sequel to Future and Metro's first collaborative effort,  We Don't Trust You , which arrived three weeks before part two and also debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 251,000 units in its first week.

The album spawned a lot of chatter online, as people believe that Drake was once again a target, amid the hip-hop civil war that kicked off thanks to Kendrick Lamar's feature on "Like That" off the first album. On "Show of Hands," A$AP Rocky  appeared to take aim at Drake in the context of his alleged relationship with Rihanna.

"N****s in they feelings over women, what, you hurt or somethin'? / I smash before you birthed, son, Flacko hit it first, son / Still don' trust you, it's always us, never them / Heard you dropped your latest shit / Funny how it just came and went," Rocky raps on the song.

The Weeknd also has a verse on "All to Myself"  that listeners think was meant for Drake and his OVO camp .

"They could never diss my brothers, baby," he sings on the song. "When they got leaks in they operation/I thank God that I never signed my life away," he sings, seemingly in reference to him never signing with Drake's OVO label.

Elsewhere on the chart, Beyoncé’s  Cowboy Carter  fell to No. 2 after a two week stint at the top.

This all comes ahead of next week's chart which will of course be dominated by you know who.

‘Two Idiot Girls’ Host Drew Afualo Launches 21-Date Summer Comedy Tour for ‘Loud’ Book Release | Exclusive

The multi-hyphenate comedian kicks things off at New York City’s Gramercy Theatre with her memoir-manifesto’s July 30 release

Drew Afualo attends CAPE's Radiance Gala celebrating API women and nonbinary achievement in entertainment in Los Angeles

Drew Afualo is coming back to the people. The TikTok sensation, hit podcast host, women’s rights advocate and freshly minted author (“Loud: Accept Nothing Less Than the Life You Deserve” hits bookshelves July 30) set her new comedy tour Monday with 21 dates across the U.S., TheWrap has exclusively learned.

Kicking off in New York City at Gramercy Theatre the day of the book’s release, Afualo described the engagement as a fusion of book tour-meets-comedy tour-meets-live podcast taping for her “Two Idiot Girls” comedy project with sister Deison.

“The things you can always count on for any live show I do are a silly goose time and laughter,” Afualo, who boasts 7.9 million followers on TikTok and 1 million on Instagram , told TheWrap. “My favorite aspect of my content that this show encompasses, besides empowering people, is getting a chance to make them laugh. Both aspects will be prioritized in every show!”

Patreon subscribers to “Two Idiot Girls” get exclusive presale access for the tour beginning Monday, while VIP tickets become available Tuesday and general sale tickets open Friday at 10 a.m. local time.

the three hour tour

Known for hilariously taking down misogynistic men and empowering women everywhere with heart-strong self-love, Afualo has been dubbed “The Internet’s Crusader for Women” — and “Loud” follows in-step with that mission. A “manual for fearlessly confident living,” the summer release is part memoir, part life roadmap and part laugh-out-loud manifesto. It helps, too, that “Loud” comes with an endorsement from Questlove, the Grammy-winning musician, Oscar-winning documentarian and New York Times bestselling author of “Creative Quest” and the upcoming “Hip-Hop Is History.”

Afualo told TheWrap that the “most gratifying” part of writing “Loud” was “getting to immortalize my words in print forever, something I never thought I would get to do.”

“What I hope resonates with my fans the most is all the ideology behind loving yourself unconditionally and unabashedly,” she said. “I hope they hold onto that so they can give themselves all the love and respect they deserve in this life!”

As far as having Questlove in her corner, the multi-hyphenate comedian added that his involvement “has been such an amazing and surreal experience.”

After wrapping her “Loud”/”Two Idiot Girls” summer tour on Aug. 25 in Phoenix, Afualo will then hit the road in November to open for another comedy heavyweight: Whitney Cummings. But first, it’s her name on the marquee.

Catch all the dates for Afualo’s summer tour below, and learn more about “Loud” and the upcoming engagements here .
