4 day Yellowstone and Tetons in depth tour from Salt Lake City Small Groups Tour

This trip was amazing starting from the Tour guides and for all the places we visited. They took care pretty well of all of us. I felt like I was with family all the time. Organizing the campground, the meals, the trips, were great, even the driving very pleasant. My only note will be to try to do the hiking first thing in the morning, so it's not too hot. Love Hayley and Hogan, thank you guys, I won't never forget this experience.

Tim was a great tour guide. He was knowledgeable, helpful, and always upbeat. Time with the wildlife expert was phenomenal. the tour itself was excellent. The good ranking has to do with communications from Intrepid Travel, which were poor and lead to changed air flights and other headaches.

Group Policies & Procedures

To ensure an enjoyable experience for all of our Yellowstone guests, we ask our groups to adhere to the following group policies and procedures.

Check-out time is 11:00 am.

Park entry fees are not included and must be paid upon arrival to the National Park Service.

Group rates are rack, non-commissionable, per room, per night, based on single, double, triple or quad occupancy as outlined. These rates are for rooms only and do not include any transportation, meals, maid gratuity, baggage handling, special surcharges or applicable taxes, unless expressly stated otherwise.

Tax rates are subject to change without notice.

Rates and terms for group transportation, meals, and other services and activities (subject to availability), if applicable, should be arranged through the Group Reservations Sales office.

We do require that all groups be accompanied by an escort who will accept complete responsibility for settlement of the master account, settlement of all incidentals and supervision of all group members.

Rooming Lists

A typed rooming list must be received by the Xanterra Travel Collection® at least 30 days prior to the scheduled arrival date. The rooming list must identify individual guest names and indicate whether such guest is staying in a single, twin, triple or quad occupancy room. The escort’s name, address and arrival time also must be specified. The driver’s name and payment instructions for the driver’s room must be included. All children’s ages must be noted. Individual guests identified on the rooming list must be assigned to a room.

All unassigned rooms will be released.

The group may hold up to 10% of the group block as “TBAs” up to the day of arrival. However, the group will be charged the full room rate for the entire length of the group’s stay whether or not these rooms are occupied.

Direct Billing

Direct billing privileges are extended only to approved volume users utilizing multiple properties. Authorized groups must have an approved credit application on file with Xanterra. Payment is due upon receipt of the invoice and is considered delinquent 37 days after the date of the invoice.

A deposit of 50% of the total must be received by Xanterra at least 3 months prior to the group’s scheduled arrival date.

Final payment (final 50%) must be received at least 30 days prior to the group’s scheduled arrival date unless direct billing is authorized and in effect.

If any of the payments described above is not received by Xanterra by the applicable date, the group’s reservation will automatically will be cancelled. The group has the burden of showing that Xanterra received the appropriate amount on or before the applicable date.

Delinquency or failure to pay either deposits or final payments could, in Xanterras sole discretion, impact the group’s future booking privileges.

Cancellations

All cancellations must be received by the company in writing. No phone cancellations will be accepted or valid.

The group may cancel its reservation up to and including 30 days prior to the group’s scheduled arrival date without charge and all deposits will be fully refunded.

In the event of any cancellation made less than 30 days prior to the scheduled arrival date, the group agrees that the hotel will suffer significant damages and that such damages are extremely difficult or impractical to determine. Therefore, the parties agree that if the group cancels its reservation or reduces by more than 10% the number of rooms reserved less than 30 days but more than 14 days prior to the group’s scheduled arrival date, the customer will pay one night’s room charge for each room cancelled.

If the customer cancels its reservation or reduces the number of rooms reserved 14 days or less before the group’s scheduled arrival, the group will pay damages equal to the room charge for each room cancelled for each night for the entire length of the group’s scheduled stay.

Xanterra reserves the right to cancel a group’s reservation without notice if any of the above payment or rooming list requirements are not met.

We’re pleased to offer a variety of restaurants and group meal options. We offer prepaid meal coupons for all meals in our full-service restaurants. We can also arrange pre-set menus at specific dining times.  With some limitations, we can offer banquet-style meals at a few lodging properties. Additionally, deli lunches can be pre-ordered for those “on-the-go” itineraries. For more information on our meal options, please call our group reservations sales department at 307.344.5282.

A group may cancel meal reservations up to and including 7 days prior to the group’s scheduled arrival without forfeiture of the deposit.

Cancellations occurring within 7 days of the group’s arrival will result in liquidated damages equal to the total charge for all cancelled meals for the entire length of the group’s scheduled stay.

She knows all the secret areas and very knowledgable of Wyoming. We were just there a week ago and saw a pack of wolves inside the Elk Refuge. We also saw many moose, elk, big horn sheep ,bison, and coyotes! Enjoy your stay with this company!! Read more Written March 4, 2024
  • Smithea22 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing Tour!!!! Michelle was INCREDIBLE!!!! We had an amazing tour and I will go back the next time I am in Jackson Hole. I saw Moose, Swans, Elk, so many Bison, Coyotes, 4 Bald Eagles and lots of other animals. I loved it and will come back in the summer to see grizzly and black bears and hopefully 399 (the famous mama grizzly bear)!!! Finally - Michelle was our tour guide and she was absolutely the best!!!!! She even took pictures and videos from her high end scope and then airdropped them to all of us so we have the most amazing collection of pictures! - Preston Read more Written January 3, 2024
  • suebB9991VL 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles WOW what a tour! Michelle was the best guide. Michelle’s knowledge of the local and surrounding areas are unbelievable. We ticked off some bucketlisters…. Saw bison, moose, 3 varieties of elk, eagle, sheep in their natural environments… great photos. Snacks were offered, car clean, roomy, super comfy seats binoculars provided. Well worth every penny. Michelle’s commentary was very enjoyable. The tour operator contacted us the night before to confirm pick up time. We travelled from Australia for our first white Christmas and this tour is a highlight of our holiday. • aguer6596 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful landscapes, wonderful tour guide Our law firm took a weekend trip to Jackson Hole and one of our group activities was this Sunrise tour. We all enjoyed it very much. The tour guide was so friendly and knowledgeable and made great conversation the whole time. Unfortunately, there was not much wildlife out and about to see, and there was a fog, but the views were still magical and we really enjoyed it regardless. The one thing I would say is that the "local breakfast" advertisement for this tour is misleading. The breakfast is just snacks, not a breakfast. It was store-bought muffins and granola bars, water, and orange juice. I would recommend eating beforehand and using the "local breakfast" as snacks, as it is a 4 hour tour. Overall, I would recommend this and would like to do it again! Read more Written December 18, 2023
  • Liz N 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Exciting evening "chasing" wild life in the Teetons We had such a great adventure chasing wild life in the Teetons. Our guide, Frank, was funny, interesting, very knowledgeable about the Teetons and knew where to find the animals. We told him we wanted to hear an elk bugle and to see a grizzly bear. He delivered both and then some! It was fascinating watching a moose family by the river, a bear and her cubs grazing in a meadow, pronghorns in a field. Frank knew where the animals like to hang out and took us to each spot. After driving around Yellowstone and the Teetons for 6 days, it was great having someone else drive so we could both enjoy the sites. We had our own binoculars but the scope Frank provided allowed us to see the animals at an even closer range. Booking the tour over the phone was easy and Jonathan very friendly with great customer service skills. Good email communication before the tour as well. Read more Written October 18, 2023

  • jennifermL2362TQ 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Worth it!!!!!!! Grizzly Country Wildlife Adventures certainly exceeded my expectations. We did a 12 hour private tour of the lower Loop of Yellowstone. While the trip was expensive, it was worth the money because there is no way we could have navigated and seen so many things in a 12 hour period without the help. The information alone from Steve, our wonderful tour guide, was well worth it. From the moment I booked over the phone, the owner Jonathan was beyond helpful, not only with booking the trip, but with answering questions I had about the area and things to do. This was a huge help because planning a trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton can be extremely overwhelming. Everything was taken care of from the moment Steve picked us up. He offered muffins, juice and water to start and a full delicious lunch was included. It was helpful to be able to keep our eyes out for wildlife and sights while the guide drove and kept us interested in the history and provided an abundance of information about where we going, what we were seeing and even suggestions for the rest of our time in the area. Steve’s suggestions turned out great! He pointed us towards a hike that was absolutely stunning (one in which we encountered a bear cub which was exciting and terrifying). He gave great restaurant suggestions and told us some great spots we had never heard of. We traveled with a group of five ranging in age from 3 to 70! Steve was truly phenomenal at navigating a diverse group and gave the older travelers the push that they needed, while being realistic with what they can and can’t do. At one point he even carried my son. Without him our trip to Wyoming wouldn’t have been the same! I will certainly suggest Grizzly Tour to everyone I know!! Read more Written August 24, 2023

Legendary Journeys and Adventures

The soul of the American West... Naturally inspiring, the landscapes of the American West challenge the imagination with jaw-dropping canyons, gurgling mud pots, geysers, and wide-open spaces... while towering mountains are a study in contrast, harboring wildlife and man-made wonders.

A day at ta guest ranch, a taste of the cowboy life at a working wyoming ranch.

Make your way through Wyoming's breathtaking Bighorn Mountains to an authentic (and fun) western ranch experience at TA Guest Ranch in Buffalo. Homesteaded in 1884, the ranch was once the site of a shootout during the infamous Johnson County War that pitched cowboy against cowboy in these parts in 1892 – you can still see some of the old bullet holes! But today's visit will be a peaceful one… where you can choose to meet a horse whisperer, learn roping techniques from real cowboys, ride in a horse-drawn wagon, or saddle up for a horseback ride... and enjoy a private lunch on the ranch.

A night at the rodeo

Attend the exciting cody nite rodeo (seasonal, june – august).

Way out here in Wyoming, nothing promises more real Western fun than an honest-to-goodness rodeo... especially in a town named for the legendary Wild West showman, "Buffalo Bill" Cody, and often called the "Rodeo Capital of the World." Established in 1938 and operating June through August, the Cody Nite Rodeo is the world's longest-running nightly rodeo. Get set for an evening filled with bull riding, saddle bronco riding, team roping, barrel racing, rodeo clowns, and a "calf scramble" for kids 12 and under.

Old Faithful Inn

Stay in a classic national historic landmark in yellowstone national park.

One of the largest log structures in the world, Old Faithful Inn was designated a National Historic Landmark. Built in 1904 of native lodgepole pine – and the epitome of the "National Park Rustic" architectural style – it is set within walking distance of Old Faithful Geyser, just one of Yellowstone's many natural wonders... including geysers, fumaroles and boiling hot springs.

This relatively untamed territory makes you proud of those who had the foresight to set aside the space for National Parks.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks begins and ends in the U.S.

Real ID Act - Effective May 7, 2025

Beginning in May 2025, some state IDs will no longer permit you to board a domestic flight. Currently, some states are compliant, some have received extensions, and some are not compliant.  Click here  to see the status of your state. If your state license is not compliant, you can use a passport in lieu of a valid state ID.

Please Note:  The federal government has extended the deadline to May 7, 2025 for domestic airline passengers to secure a Real ID driver's license for use as identification at the airport. Travelers without a verified license or ID card will also have the option of showing other identity documents, such as a passport or military ID to board a plane.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally,   you should contact an embassy or consulate of the U.S. to determine what travel documentation is necessary. You may also log on to the U.S. State Department's Internet site by clicking  here.

If you are traveling by air to join and/or depart from this tour within the U.S., please read the section entitled Airline Security Measures under Additional Information to determine what travel documentation is required.

If you are a citizen of the U.S. or Canada who travels frequently between the two countries, you may benefit from the NEXUS program, which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet website by clicking here . Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify Tauck as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of another country traveling to or within the U.S., we suggest that contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations and medications for vaccine-preventable diseases and other diseases for which you might be at risk when you reach your destination in the U.S. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.

To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

Some of the excursions on this tour are:

  • Whitewater rafting on the Snake River, the journey is roughly 2 hours and requires stepping in and out of an inflatable raft
  • Guided horseback riding on a working cattle ranch, guests are required to show ability to mount/unmount and for safety reasons, a weight restriction of 225 pounds is in place.

There are no elevators at The Ranch at Ucross or at the Holiday Inn® Cody at Buffalo Bill Village, and while none of the planned activities are especially strenuous or difficult, we urge caution when engaging in activities at high elevations. If you have a heart condition or lung ailment, please consult your physician before you book your trip.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

The Jackson Lake Lodge, Old Faithful Inn and Lake Yellowstone Hotel are all non-smoking hotels and a very large fine will be assessed if it is determined that anyone has smoked while on property.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey! You can view the reading list  here .

The high temperatures in the summer months average 70 to 90°F (21 to 32°C) and the lows average 40 to 60°F (4 to 16°C). The overnight temperatures can drop to the freezing point even during the summer at the highest elevations. Rainfall is light to moderate throughout the region. Salt Lake City receives the least amount of rain with an average of less than 1 in (25 mm) per month during summer; Jackson averages 1.5 in (38 mm) and Rapid City averages 2.5 in (63 mm.)

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required.

All of our hotels offer valet laundry service for a fee except for the Old Faithful Inn, Lake Yellowstone Hotel and The Ranch at Ucross.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

The national park lodges do not have televisions or Internet hook-ups, so bring along a good book to read!

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (VERY IMPORTANT)
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Long pants or jeans (long pants and closed-toed shoes are required for the horseback riding)
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • A book or e-reader to read in the evening, or downloaded podcasts or video programs to watch during your free time.
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Yellowstone National Park Tours & Holidays

A young female hiking along a boardwalk over geothermal hot springs in Yellowstone National Park.

With rainbow-coloured hot springs, gurgling geysers and bubbling mud pools, it's no wonder the early explorers' tales of Yellowstone National Park sounded more like fable than fact.

Brimming with half of the world’s hydrothermal features and landscapes that'll have you wondering if you’re still in the United States  (or on Earth!), Yellowstone National Park is just as extraordinary for modern explorers. Join your local guide to uncover the beauty and mystery of the world's oldest national park. Whether you want to marvel at the vivid colours of Grand Prismatic Spring, watch steaming geysers like Old Faithful erupt or follow a  wolf-tracking expert  in Lamar Valley to learn the secrets of these mysterious animals, you'll soon discover why Yellowstone is a  national park  like no other.

Yellowstone national park travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Where is Yellowstone National Park?

Most of Yellowstone is located in northwestern Wyoming, but some areas of the park also spread across southern Montana and eastern Idaho.

How do I get to Yellowstone National Park?

You can get to Yellowstone by flying into one of the nearby airports, driving or taking a bus. The closest airports are:

  • Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (north entrance).
  • Yellowstone Regional Airport (east entrance).
  • Jackson Hole Airport (south entrance).

It's also possible to fly to nearby airports like Chicago, Salt Lake City, Utah or Denver, where you can rent a car.

You can access Yellowstone via one of five entry points if you're driving. It takes 4.5 hours to drive from Salt Lake City, 1.5 hours from Idaho Falls, 1.5 hours from Jackson and 1.5 hours from Bozeman.

It's possible to catch a bus from Bozeman in Montana to West Yellowstone all year, and you can also go directly from Idaho to West Yellowstone via bus during the summer months.

There is no direct train into Yellowstone. However, you could catch a train to southeast Idaho, Salt Lake City, Utah and Northern Montana and go from there.

Getting around Yellowstone National Park

There is no public transport within Yellowstone, so you will need a car to get around.

Most roads are closed to vehicles during the winter months due to heavy snowfall, excluding the road to Mammoth Hot Springs, which is maintained for winter travel.

There are five entrance points that loop around the park’s main landmarks and it can take hours to drive between them.

Always check road and park conditions before you set off.

What's the weather like in Yellowstone National Park?

Yellowstone National Park sits within two climate zones: cool temperate and continental. There are four distinct seasons, but the weather can be unpredictable (think four seasons in a day!) and you can't always rely on the forecast.

What to pack for Yellowstone National Park

The weather in Yellowstone can change quickly (in all four seasons), so depending on the time of year you visit, you'll definitely want to pack waterproof layers, a sun hat or warm hat, and good, comfortable footwear.

What animals live in Yellowstone National Park?

Yellowstone is a wildlife lover’s paradise with an abundance of small animals and large predators. Some of the animals you might get to see include:

  • Deer (mule deer, pronghorn deer, white-tailed deer)
  • Bighorn sheep
  • Mountain goats
  • Black bears
  • Grizzly bears
  • Canada lynx
  • River otters

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Where to Find Yellowstone’s Captivating Wildlife, Indigenous Heritage, and Uncrowded Places

Here’s how to explore yellowstone, according to the experts..

  • Copy Link copied

Indigenous people referred to Yellowstone National Park’s 10,000 thermal features as the “land of the burning ground.”

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem offers plenty to see, including volcanic plateaus, alpine valleys, and mountain ranges—and thanks to the volcanic caldera hidden beneath the ground, geothermal features you won’t see anywhere else on Earth.

The 3,472-square-mile park in Northwestern Wyoming (and small sections of Montana and Idaho) is also home to the largest concentration of mammals in the lower 48, including the famous reintroduced wolves. In short, there are many reasons Yellowstone National Park pulls in more than 3 million visitors per year. Here are some insider tips on what you should know and where to go on your trip.

Be on the lookout for bighorn sheep and wildflowers on your way up Mount Washburn.

Explore Yellowstone’s geological features

The first volcanic eruption in what scientists call the “ sleeping giant ” miles below Yellowstone took place 2.1 million years ago, when up to a foot of ash covered the entire western section of the United States. (Don’t worry, the last eruption was 70,000 years ago.)

At the National Historic Landmark of Obsidian Cliff , the molten lava that oozed beneath the park cooled into spiky black obsidian and was even used for toolmaking more than 11,000 years ago. Take in all the translucent dark cliffs of obsidian here along the roughly 20-mile-section of Grand Loop Road between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Geyser Basin .

Next up? Hike for about four hours past wildflowers and bighorn sheep to the 10,219-foot summit of nearby Mount Washburn , named after former U.S. Representative Henry Washburn. For dramatic bright blues and greens, head a couple of hours southwest to the waters of the Grand Prismatic Spring at Midway Geyser Basin.

Your trip to the world’s greatest concentration of geysers, hot springs, mud pots, and steam vents wouldn’t be complete without a stroll on the boardwalks of the hottest and oldest, Norris Geyser Basin , located in the north of the park next to the remains of a 600,000-year-old volcanic explosion, known as Mammoth Hot Springs .

“It’s always worth seeing Old Faithful and the other geysers in that area, but I would also recommend also visiting Fountain Paint Pots and Artists Paint Pots mud pots [hot springs filled with boiling mud] to get a good sense of the variety of hydrothermal features at Yellowstone,” says U.S. Geological Survey and Volcano Science Center geologist Mark Stelten, who is researching the magma stored under Yellowstone and triggers for potential future eruption.

And while many visitors know about Old Faithful, one of the best places to see the geyser is from the porch of the Yellowstone Tribal Heritage Center , which opened in 2022 to honor the region’s tribal communities through stories and artwork. Here, you can listen to presenters with ancestral ties to the tribes associated with the park, according to Alyssa McGeeley, a member of the Muscogee Nation with Yuchi heritage who is developing a strategic plan for tribal engagement in the park. McGeeley also recommends other spots with Indigenous history: “Sheepeater Cliff [in the northern part of the park] was once home to traditional wickiup lodges made of wooden poles, and Nez Perce Creek [in the park’s northeast] is a tranquil spot that holds echoes of the 1877 Flight of the Nez Perce .”

Spot a diverse range of wildlife

Wildlife conservation is further along than it’s ever been in Yellowstone’s history, despite habitat disruption from rising temperatures and unpredictable precipitation from man-made climate change . In 2003, it was removed from UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites in danger, a sign of progress.

One prime spot for wildlife is Hayden Valley , named after Ferdinand Hayden, who completed the first federally funded geological survey in 1871, convincing the United States to sign a new law making Yellowstone the first national park. Pull over at one of the scenic road stops in this centrally located 50-square-mile section of the park to catch a glimpse of coyotes, grizzly bears, wolves, and bison.

In the Lamar Valley , near the park’s northern entrance, you’re likely to see elk, moose, grizzly bears, badgers, bald eagles, pronghorn, osprey, deer, coyotes, and the park’s largest herd of wild bison. (And if you’re lucky, maybe you’ll stumble on the burly beasts in the Tower-Roosevelt area in the northern part of the park too.) Considered to be the last wild herd of American plains bison, this species has continuously lived in Yellowstone since prehistoric times. The National Park Service saved the herd from extinction, raising 21 bison in Lamar Valley to recover the dwindling bison population in the 20th century.

Another success story in the Lamar Valley belongs to the gray wolves. They were completely killed off in 1926 by park rangers, but in 1995 these intelligent and loyal animals were reintroduced from western Canada, and they were eventually taken off the endangered list in 2017. (For a blissfully quiet experience, consider seeing this valley in the winter .)

The 1903-opened Old Faithful Inn is one of the country’s few remaining log hotels and the largest log structure in the world, an architectural marvel that influenced the exposed log-and-wood frame architecture we see throughout U.S. national parks today. For sprawling eco-friendly charm, check into Canyon Lodge and Cabins , and visit Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel & Cabins , one of Yellowstone’s year-round properties.

Feel like venturing outside the park? Glamp at Under Canvas West Yellowstone , a 10-minute drive from the West Entrance, or roam around a dude ranch 30 miles away at Mountain Sky Guest Ranch in Paradise Valley, Montana.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 'black to yellow trail' tour.

The ‘Black to Yellow Trail’ tour route is historic.  It was promoted a century ago to attract Americans from Chicago to travel across the country.  It started in the Black Hills of South Dakota and ended in Yellowstone National Park.

What is the activity level for this tour?

This is an easy to light moderate tour.  We will do many walks and be active, but they will all be over flat terrain on established trails.  Any walking is optional.  Just talk to your guide and they will figure out what works best for you.

We just want you to know that this is not a ‘sit in the van and stare out the windows’ tour, nor is it an intensive trek through mountains.  It is an adventure, meant to be enjoyed at a relaxed pace, where you can take your time to learn about the history, the wildlife, and the characters who lived in the region.

Yellowstone National Park, renowned for its stunning landscapes and incredible wildlife, is located primarily in the USA states of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. The park is home to a large variety of animals, including ferocious predators, graceful deer, and fascinating birds.

Here are the top 10 animals you may encounter while visiting Yellowstone National Park.

By Thomas Wolf

Pronghorns are characterized by their soft tan coats and white rump patches. Their fur allows them to blend in with the grasslands and sagebrush flats of the park, which makes spotting pronghorns in Yellowstone a harder but far more thrilling experience.

Pronghorns, nicknamed the “speed demons” of the prairie, are the fastest land animals in North America, capable of reaching speeds up to 55 mph (88 km/h). They are excellent endurance runners, able to maintain high speeds over long distances, and have exceptional eyesight and agility, which helps them evade predators.

By Ken Lund from Reno

It’s important to maintain a safe distance when observing them as they can be unpredictable and protective of their young.

Adult male moose (bulls) stand 6 ft (1.8 m) tall at the shoulder, weigh as heavy as 1,400 lb (635 kg), so it’s easy to understand why they are one of the most sought-after sightings in Yellowstone. Furthermore, Bulls grow massive antlers that are covered with a soft “skin” that is shed and regrown annually when seasons change. Their antlers are their display of dominance during the mating season.

By MatthiasKabel

They are nocturnal and roam around a large area of land, making their sightings a rare and special occurrence.

Wolverines are well-equipped for survival in harsh environments with their stocky build, powerful jaws, sharp claws, and incredible strength. Even though they seem ferocious, they mostly scavenge for food, and often feast on carrion.

By Membeth

During the rutting season, which occurs from late August until mid-October, male elks produce a bugling sound to attract potential mates. The bugling sounds echo through the park and can be heard when visiting Yellowstone in the fall.

Elks, also known as wapitis, are the largest species of deer in North America.

By lwolfartist

Ravens play an important ecological role by helping to clean up the park’s ecosystem. Spotting these intelligent birds soaring through the skies or perched on tree branches is common in Yellowstone.

Ravens are an intelligent bird species that inhabit Yellowstone National Park. These large, black-feathered birds with a distinctive croaking call are often seen in pairs or small groups. They are highly opportunistic and will scavenge for various food sources, including carrion and scraps left by other animals.

It’s a remarkable experience to see these wolves or hear their howls in Yellowstone.

Wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park in the 1990s in what has been hailed as a remarkable example of conservation success. These predators are crucial in maintaining the park’s ecological balance by controlling populations of smaller mammals, leading to a reduction in overgrazing by herbivores and an increase in biodiversity.

It is offering new understandings of their behavior, genetics, and ecology. As we learn more about these elusive predators, we uncover the keys to coexisting with them. Thus ensuring California’s wild heart remains strong. The secrets of the cougars challenge us to look beyond what is known. Consequently, inspiring a sense of wonder and respect for the natural world.</p>

Cougars are highly adaptable and thrive in various habitats, from mountains to forests. While sightings of cougars in Yellowstone are rare, evidence of their presence, such as tracks or scat, can sometimes be found.

The elusive cougar , also known as the mountain lion or puma, are solitary cats that roam the remote areas of Yellowstone National Park. They are also masters of camouflage, making them challenging to spot.

By Michael Gäbler

Witnessing a bison herd grazing on the grasslands or crossing a river is an unforgettable experience. These majestic creatures testify to the park’s commitment to wildlife conservation.

The American bison , often referred to as buffalo, holds a special place in the history and ecology of Yellowstone National Park. These massive herbivores are an iconic symbol of the American West. Yellowstone is one of the few places where bison still roam freely in large numbers.

By Harlan Kredit

Black Bears

Following bear safety guidelines and respecting their natural habitat is crucial for both visitor safety and the well-being of the bears.

This charismatic species is found in the forests and meadows of Yellowstone National Park. These bears exhibit various coat colors , including black, brown, cinnamon, and blonde. Yellowstone’s black bears are primarily herbivorous, feeding on grasses, berries, nuts, and other plant material. However, they are opportunistic omnivores and will scavenge for food when available.

By Yathin S Krishnappa

Yellowstone’s coyotes are known for their distinctive yipping and howling calls, often echoing through the park’s valleys. Observing these cunning and resourceful animals in their natural habitat provides a glimpse into Yellowstone’s intricate web of life.

Coyotes are adaptable and resilient predators found throughout Yellowstone National Park. These canines are widely distributed and thrive in various habitats, from grasslands to forests. With their keen senses and agile movements, coyotes are skilled hunters and scavengers. They primarily eat smaller-sized mammals, birds, and carrion.

<p>Before the reintroduction, Yellowstone National Park had been devoid of wolves, its top predator, for nearly 70 years. The elimination of wolves in the early 20th century led to unforeseen ecological imbalances, including overpopulated herds of elk and deer, which affected vegetation and the overall health of the park’s ecosystems.</p>

MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, Wyo. — Yellowstone National Park will start opening some roads for the summer season, depending on weather, at 8 a.m. April 19.

Officials say the following roads are expected to open:

  • West Entrance (West Yellowstone, Montana) to Old Faithful (via Madison Junction)
  • Mammoth Hot Springs to Old Faithful (via Norris Junction and Madison Junction)
  • Norris Junction to Canyon Village

More roads will open during May, when the weather permits.

On April 20, the public can go to the park with entrance fees waived for National Park Week.

Yellowstone National Park released the following information:

Beginning at 8 a.m. Friday, April 19, 2024, select roads in Yellowstone National Park will open to the public, weather permitting. Roads begin to open annually this time of year for the summer season.

On Saturday, April 20, entrance fees will be waived in celebration of National Park Week.

Additional park roads will open throughout May, weather permitting.

The only roads open year-round are between the North Entrance in Gardiner, Montana, and the Northeast Entrance in Cooke City/Silver Gate, Montana (via Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction and Lamar Valley).

Check the park’s Current Conditions before arrival.

Anticipate possible road closures due to inclement weather and dangerous driving conditions. Temporary travel restrictions or closures can occur at any time without notice. Have flexible travel plans.
