Biography [ ]

Background [ ].

Not much is known about Tour Guide Barbie prior to Toy Story 2 .

Barbie, at some point, was put into stock by Al in Al’s Toy Barn. She later developed friendships with the other displayed Barbies in the girl’s aisle.

Toy Story 2 [ ]

In Toy Story 2 while Hamm , Rex , Mr. Potato Head , and Slinky are looking for Woody , they come across a party of Barbies in the girls toy aisle.

After some time gawking at the female toys, Hamm asks if any of them know where they can find Al of Al’s Toy Barn. Tour Guide Barbie pops out and says that she can help and enters the car. She then takes control and, without asking, decides to tour the toys around the store. Eventually, Tour Guide Barbie and the rest of the toys run into the wrong Buzz, and eventually let him in the car. At some point, Barbie finally drops the toys off at Al’s office.

In the Outtakes, Barbie is the last speaking character, and waves to the viewers and tells them what to do, and states that she and the crew hope they enjoyed the movie. Shortly after, she gives up the smiling, and states to the cameramen that she needs a break from doing so.

Personality [ ]

Tour Guide Barbie is uplifting, free spirited, and willing to help anyone in need. She likes to help people out, and is always smiling at all times.

Tour Guide Barbie

Tour Guide Barbie  is a supporting character in  Toy Story 2 .

Toy Story 2 [ ]

When Hamm, Mr. Potato Head, Rex, and Slinky Dog are lost, they drive by the pink aisle where she and all the other Barbies are partying in. As Hamm asks the Barbies for advice, Tour Guide Barbie votes to volunteer as she jumps into the car that they are driving and gives a tour around Al's Toy Barn. She is implied to be a Polygot, or at least bilingual, as she tells Rex in both English and Spanish to remain in the car after Rex disembarked from the car (to catch the manual for the video game Buzz Lightyear: Attack on Zurg), and, in a similar fashion to a scene in Jurassic Park, chased it down to get back in. Then she drives the toys into the Buzz Lightyear aisle, where they pick up the Utility Belt Buzz, not knowing that the real Buzz was tied up and imprisoned in a cardboard box sitting on the shelf. She then continues the tour with the toys, leaving the real Buzz behind.

She later appears at the end of the outtakes, saying goodbye to the audience. After it's done, she complains about how smiling hurts her cheeks.

  • Tour Guide Barbie is the first instance of a toy briefly switching it's language from English to Spanish, which Buzz would eventually do when he became Spanish Buzz in  Toy Story 3 . However, in the Spanish version of the film, she repeats the statement in French.
  • Tour Guide Barbie's statement about retailers not ordering enough Buzz Lightyear dolls to meet demand is an in-joke and a fact. Because the toy sellers underestimated the box office performance of the original  Toy Story  when it was released in 1995, they did not order enough dolls to keep up with demand.

Christie, the SEC, and Amy Schumer: the long road to get Barbie on the big screen

A complete barbie timeline, from the first mattel doll to the first mattel feature film.

Kens and Barbies

Barbie, as a phenomenon, has always been larger than life. Since she first hit the scene, she transcended classic kids’ toys (and specifically, toys marketed to girls) and became a sensation in her own right. Now she’s about to transcend all over again—evolving from her typically diminutive stature to tower above us all on the big screen. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie premieres on July 21, marking a major milestone in the character’s storied history.

Related Content

Of course, it all started with an idea back in the 1950s from entrepreneur Ruth Handler “to create a doll that showed girls they had choices” (to hear Mattel tell it). From there, Barbie became an icon and eventually a movie star, though the path to her own theatrical vehicle was not always clear.

Per the official Barbie timeline , the brand-new doll debuted at the New York Toy Fair on March 9, 1959. It was an innovation in the American market, wherein the popular toys for girls were baby or toddler dolls. Barbie (full name: Barbara Millicent Roberts) was designed to reflect ’50s fashion and debuted in a glamorous black-and-white bathing suit with a curly ponytail. The look and Barbie’s inception are dramatized in a 2001: A Space Odyssey parody scene in Gerwig’s film. (Barbara Handler, daughter of Ruth and inspiration for the Barbie character, also has a cameo in the movie .)

As Barbie soared in popularity, Mattel was apparently “inundated” with requests to give the doll a boyfriend, per Forbes . In response, the company created Ken , a male doll that was named after Handler’s son Kenneth. Like Barbie, he debuted in his bathing suit, a pair of red swim trunks. This set the blueprint for Ken-ergy, as Barbie ’s Ryan Gosling has explained the character’s job is “ just beach .” Barbie’s Dreamhouse, another signature piece of Barbie lore, was rolled out just a year later in 1962.

Amid the Civil Rights movement, Mattel released its first Black doll, a friend of Barbie’s called Christie, who joined the growing Barbie universe (which included Barbie’s bestie Midge, played in the film by Emerald Fennell, and a younger sister named Skipper). While Barbie would eventually end up with a cast of supporting characters (and a range of special celeb dolls, the first of which was Twiggy in 1967), a diverse set of dolls actually named “Barbie” wouldn’t come around until 1980.

1985 - 1995

Valid criticisms of capitalism and glorifying a specific type of blonde, white womanhood aside, one of the core tenets of the Barbie line was that girls can do anything, as demonstrated by the We Girls Can Do Anything campaign in 1985. After all, Barbie became an astronaut way back in ’65, before man had ever set foot on the moon. As the wide-ranging cast of Barbie shows, Barbie has had a number of jobs. In 1985, she became a CEO; in 1992, she launched her first campaign for president. According to Mattel , she’s had “over 250 inspirational careers,” including pilot, firefighter, journalist, entrepreneur, surgeon, and many more.

(As an aside, by this point Handler had resigned from Mattel and was indicted for making false financial statements, alongside some other Mattel execs, by the SEC. She pleaded no contest, per Forbes . Girls can do anything!)

Barbie made her big screen debut in Pixar’s Toy Story franchise. A script for the first film included Barbie saving Woody and Buzz from Sid’s house, but Mattel apparently refused to license the rights. When Toy Story became a massive success, Mattel changed its tune; “Tour Guide Barbie” was featured in 1999’s Toy Story 2 , her theatrical debut. She would go on to have an even bigger role in 2010’s Toy Story 3 .

October 2001

In the early 2000s, Mattel took Barbie’s film career in its own hands with the formation of Barbie Entertainment. Under this new media wing, the company released a series of animated movies that aired on Nickelodeon and were also available on DVD. The first, Barbie In The Nutcracker , was released in October 2001, the first in a series of classic and fairy tale adaptations. There were also a handful of original plots, like the Barbie: Fairytopia sub-series. These TV movies aren’t exactly up to Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach Barbie standards (or even, necessarily, Noah Baumbach Madagascar standards ), but they are much beloved by a certain generation of Barbie enthusiasts, if the Barbie As Princess And The Pauper song meme is anything to go by. Mattel has continued to release animated features, under various banners, through 2023.

September 2009

Mattel officially dipped its toe in the water at putting Barbie on the big screen by partnering with Universal Pictures in 2009. At the time, Laurence Mark was set to produce, per Variety . According to Mattel’s Richard Dickson at the time, Barbie hadn’t gotten her own starring vehicle yet because “The brand wasn’t ready for a movie” up to that point, but Barbie had “evolved from a toy into an intellectual property” over the previous 10 years, so now, ostensibly, she was ready. That proved incorrect, of course, as several studios and production teams would take a crack at Barbie over the next 14 years to no avail.

By 2014, Mattel had jumped ship from Universal and set up shop with Sony. Jenny Bicks was originally set to pen the script for the live-action comedy, produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald (via Deadline ). By March 2015, Diablo Cody had been brought in to rewrite the script, and Amy Pascal had joined the production team.

In later years, Cody was frank that she was “literally incapable of turning in a Barbie draft.” Reflecting in 2023 , she said, “When I was first hired for this, I don’t think the culture had not embraced the femme or the bimbo as valid feminist archetypes yet.” Cody added that “they wanted a girl-boss feminist twist on Barbie, and I couldn’t figure it out because that’s not what Barbie is.”

In the meantime, Barbie entered the influencer age and became a vlogger. Her YouTube channel hosts content that ranges from Barbie explaining her day-to-day life to thoughtful conversations about mental health. Plenty to tide her adoring public over during the crawl to the big screen.

December 2016

Sony had commissioned three additional Barbie drafts (from Lindsey Beer, Bert Royal, and Hilary Winston, per Deadline ) before Amy Schumer came on board in December 2016. She signed up to star in the movie, and took a pass at the script with her sister Kim Caramele. This version was supposed to be about a “perfect land of Barbies” where one woman realizes she doesn’t belong. She would then be “expelled from the idealistic land and journeys to the real world, where she discovers that being unique is an asset.” Schumer eventually left the project due to what she called “creative differences.”

The studio “definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it,” Schumer later said , adding that she was rubbed the wrong way when she was gifted a pair of Manolo Blahnik heels when she was cast: “The idea that that’s just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, ‘You’ve got the wrong gal.’”

After Schumer departed, Sony took one last stab at Barbie by bringing Anne Hathaway on board. Hathaway reportedly handpicked up-and-coming director Alethea Jones to helm this new (ultimately unrealized) version of the movie. Oceans Eight scribe Olivia Milch was also reportedly brought on to do yet another rewrite, per Deadline . By early 2018, this version was already dead in the water , and the whole operation was put on hold until at least May 2020 (which turned out to be optimistic).

Things took a turn for the better for Ms. Barbie when Sony’s film rights lapsed and Warner Bros. Pictures took the wheel. Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment has a first-look deal with the studio, which paved the way for her to both produce and star in the film. From there, she invited Greta Gerwig on board , who invited her partner Noah Baumbach on board. LuckyChap managed to protect Gerwig and Baumbach’s creative process from the powers that be at WB and Mattel; prior to completion of the script, the filmmaker shared only one abstract poem (which “shares some similarities with the Apostles’ Creed”) with the higher-ups to demonstrate her vision for the film, according to a 2023 Vogue profile.

October 2021

Ryan Gosling made history when cast as the first live-action Ken, a groundbreaking moment that would alter his Ken-ergy forevermore.

Gosling later said that after Gerwig offered him the role, he told her he needed time to think about it. After hanging up on the director, he walked into his backyard to find a Ken doll “face-down in the mud next to a squished lemon.” He took a photo, sent it to Gerwig, and said “I shall be your Ken. For his story must be told.”

February - April 2022

We knew very little about Barbie in 2022, but we did know one thing: the cast was chock-full of famous people. America Ferrera joined in February; Marvel’s Simu Liu was announced in March. Kate McKinnon, Ariana Greenblatt, and Alexandra Shipp were also announced as part of the cast that month, and then a whole bunch more (Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, and Will Ferrell, to name just a few) in April. That month, we also got our first look at Robbie as Barbie , and it was very pink.

By July, we’d had our first look at Gosling’s Ken , and it also became clear that most of the people who were cast were all playing the same characters: Barbies and Kens. The Barbies were all having sleepovers after filming , and the Kens were praising Gerwig and Baumbach’s script as the best thing they’d ever read . This is pretty typical of the Barbie/Ken dynamic, as we now know.

December 2022

The first teaser trailer for Barbie arrived in December 2022, and the picture of one of the summer’s most hotly anticipated films was becoming more clear. We’d seen Barbie and Ken rollerskating and gotten wind of Will Ferrell’s villainous Mattel exec . Now, there was a Helen Mirren-narrated 2001 pastiche explaining the origins of Barbie.

April was a big month in Barbie world. We got a new teaser trailer and an array of gorgeous character posters , which introduced the world to a crucial new meme format: “She’s everything. He’s just Ken.” Footage also premiered at CinemaCon , in which it became clear that this Barbie is suffering from an existential crisis.

A full-length trailer for Barbie , first seen at CinemaCon, finally hit the Internet in May. After that, the Barbie press tour—which already seemed to have been going on forever—kicked off in earnest. Barbie gave a tour of the Dreamhouse . Airbnb offered a Dreamhouse . Robbie rocked a bunch of Barbie looks and Gosling kept going on about Ken-ergy. The soundtrack made a huge splash, particularly the Nicki Minaj/Ice Spice collab that provided a fresh take on Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” The movie launched over 100 brand partnerships , and we found out the movie used up the world’s entire supply of pink paint . The Internet, in general, had a ball.

Unfortunately, the fun had to come to an end. On the heels of the film causing an international incident (involving the controversial “nine-dash line” map ), SAG-AFTRA joined the WGA on strike , essentially cutting all promotion of Hollywood short. A brief extension of the contract allowed Barbie to get a couple of red-carpet premieres in, but unfortunately, Ryan Gosling is no longer allowed to talk about Ken-ergy . They’d done their jobs, though: Barbie is projected to make around $100 million in its first weekend, per Variety . (Bonus: according to AMC, 20,000 moviegoers are doing the “Barbenheimer” double feature .)

After a long and winding road, Barbie premieres July 21.

10 Movies to Watch Before You See Barbie

Fans are making their lists of films to watch before Barbie, and not just Oppenheimer.

Barbie has certainly left her mark over the years. One of the first fashion dolls, Barbie has gone on to have a variety of roles, from astronaut to computer programmer, as well as a few princesses. Greta Gerwig's Barbie allows the famous doll to enter the live-action world, as Barbie and Ken go on an adventure of self-discovery after leaving Barbie Land.

There are plenty of films that can get audiences ready for watching Barbie. Some have similar themes of toys coming to life or have characters that remind audiences of Barbie and her colorful world. Of course, Barbie herself has had quite a cinematic history of her own.

Life-Size (2000)

In Life-Size , Casey Stewart, in an attempt to bring her dead mother back to life, casts a spell that accidentally transforms her Eve doll into a real woman. Much like Barbie, Eve is a fashion doll with a long line of careers, including an astronaut. Eve's transition into the real world isn't without complications, but her cheery attitude and self-confidence eventually start to rub off on other people. In turn, Eve learns how to become well-rounded as a doll in a world where kids want everything with microchips. In the end, Eve decides to return to being a doll to save her line, bringing to mind Barbie 's message that people may come and go, but ideas live forever.

This would not be the end of Eve, however, as she would return in the sequel, Life-Size 2 . It's revealed that Eve lives in her own world, filled with other Eve dolls, who often venture out into the real world to help those in need. One such Eve helps a toy company CEO through a quarter-life crisis.

Funny Face (1957)

For many, Barbie is synonymous with the color pink, from her clothes to her accessories. Barbie's world in Barbie is filled with the color, to the point where it sparked rumors of causing a shortage of pink paint. Another time the color was prominent in popular culture was in the number, "Think Pink," in the film Funny Face .

Fashion magazine mogul Maggie Prescott opens up the film with an idea for the next big fashion trend: pink! The ensuing song, "Think Pink," shows just how versatile the color is. Pink is praised as a color for the whole family, with a group of sisters in matching pink dresses. However, the color is highlighted as romantic, promising girls in pink ballgowns that they'll get noticed at the dance.

Athletic women play with pink toys in pink summer clothes. Even a group of working-class painters praise the color. Soon, trains and planes come in pink. The whole sequence would almost feel like a Barbie homage if the film didn't predate the doll by a few years. Of course, the punchline is that Prescott herself wouldn't be caught dead in the color and has already moved on to her next project.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

The Wizard of Oz is a classic 1939 fantasy film in which a young farm girl, Dorothy Gale, is sent by a twister to the magical land of Oz. While there, she encounters a variety of colorful characters: a scarecrow who wants a brain, a man made of tin who wants a heart, and a cowardly lion who wants courage. Together, they venture down the Yellow Brick Road to meet the mysterious, titular wizard. Unfortunately, Dorothy has a powerful enemy, the Wicked Witch of the West, out to get her. However, Dorothy might just have the power she needs all along.

Barbie already makes numerous references to The Wizard of Oz in the trailers, like a Pink Brick Road. A cinema in Barbie Land is even playing the classic film. Barbie is also noticeably given a choice between staying in her fantasy world and venturing out into the real world, symbolized by a sparkly pink slipper and a sandal, which has drawn comparisons to Dorothy's magic slippers.

Toy Story 3 (2010)

Barbie, being one of the most famous toys on Earth, has had a notable history in the Toy Story franchise. At one point, it considered including a Barbie doll in the original Toy Story film, where she would have rescued Woody from Scud the Dog, though this had to be dropped for the final film . The Barbie line eventually made an appearance in Toy Story 2 , where a Tour Guide Barbie, voiced by Jodi Benson, took on a prominent role. While friendly and helpful throughout, an end-credits joke reveals she doesn't like constantly smiling.

Another Barbie doll, once again voiced by Benson, appears prominently in Toy Story 3 . After being donated to a daycare, she meets a Ken doll, who himself suffers feelings of inadequacy and is secretly in league with the villains. Barbie is able to make use of her skills from her various jobs, including her spy work and political careers, to uncover the villain Lotso's schemes and save the day. Her example is even able to influence Ken to her side. Barbie also prominently explores the idea of Ken feeling like an accessory, especially in the song, "Just Ken."

Christopher Robin (2018)

Another famous toy character is Winnie the Pooh , the little teddy bear who lives in the Hundred Acre Wood, with a variety of other living toys and animals. Sometimes, however, they are implied to be part of their human friend Christopher Robin's imagination. Any ambiguity, however, is dropped for the film Christopher Robin .

The story opens up with the Hundred Acre Wood characters throwing Christopher Robin a going-away party before he leaves for boarding school. Soon, however, the harsh realities of life, including his father's death, compel the boy to grow up fast, even serving in World War II. However, Pooh eventually comes to London to reunite with the adult Christopher Robin. Pooh helps his friend regain his idealism, patch things up with his family, and even outwit an unscrupulous boss.

A child's love for a toy was explored in the adult comedy Ted . Little John Bennett's wish for his Christmas present, a teddy bear named Teddy, later Ted, to come to life comes true. Ted becomes John's best friend and even a celebrity. Years later, John is a grown man and is still close as ever with Ted.

However, things take a turn when John's girlfriend Lori thinks he should move on from his life and Ted's hedonistic influence. This turns out to be the start of their problems, as a stalker makes multiple attempts to kidnap Ted. However, friendship and another wish on a shooting star might save the day. After all, as the sequel Ted 2 points out, sometimes friendships last longer than seemingly more serious relationships.

Legally Blonde (2001)

Legally Blonde stars Elle Woods, a character often compared to Barbie. In fact, both the film and its sequel have characters name-drop Barbie to dismissively compare her to Elle. However, Elle, much like Barbie and her ever-growing list of careers, soon shows how wrong it is to underestimate her. When her boyfriend dumps her before entering law school, believing she isn't fit to be a politician's wife. Elle decides to prove herself by getting into the same school, Harvard Law School.

Although initially insulted and bullied, Elle's charisma is able to help other people around her. Eventually, Elle is selected to participate in a murder case involving her idol, fitness guru Brooke Windham, who is accused of killing her husband. With her savvy and hair-care knowledge, and ultimately staying true to herself, Elle is able to solve the murder mystery and expose the real killer. The story ends with Elle graduating with honors, befriending a former rival, and finding a new love who's about to propose. By the end of the second film, Elle's even got presidential ambitions.

Barbie as Rapunzel (2002)

Barbie herself would end up starring in a variety of computer-generated animated films in the early 2000s, often being adaptations of fairy tales and ballet stories. One early film is Barbie as Rapunzel , adapting the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, a story which had Barbie previously adapted as dolls, books, and even a CD-Rom game.

Loosely adapting the original fairy tale, Barbie tells her sister Kelly the story of a girl named Rapunzel, who lives as a servant of the cruel witch Gothel , who claims to have adopted her after her parents abandoned her. One day, Rapunzel stumbles upon a nearby village, and even a prince, encouraging her to learn about her past. The jealous witch imprisons her in a tower as punishment, but Rapunzel manages to escape with the help of a magic paintbrush.

Barbie: Fairytopia (2005)

In her line of computer-generated animated films, Barbie: Fairytopia was one of the first forays into original stories and even sparked a trilogy and a few spin-offs. Somewhat reminiscent of Thumbelina , Barbie stars as a wingless fairy named Elina, who lives in a flower in the world of Fairytopia, ruled by the benevolent Enchantress. Unfortunately, she is bullied by the others for her lack of wings. Soon, Elina will be able to prove herself when a guardian of her realm, Topaz, has been kidnapped.

Laverna, the Enchantress' evil sister, is plotting to kidnap the guardians in order to take over the realm. However, Laverna's scheme involves a poison that harms winged creatures, giving Elina an advantage. In the end, Laverna saves the guardians and is rewarded with her own pair of wings.

Barbie as The Princess & the Pauper (2004)

Barbie as The Princess and the Pauper is a loose retelling of Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper . Barbie plays the Princess Anneliese and the pauper Erika, who were born on the same day and resemble each other except for their hair. Anneliese lives a life of luxury, while Erika grows up enslaved as a seamstress to the greedy Madam Carp. Meanwhile, the villain Preminger schemes to take over the kingdom by destroying the country's finances. When Anneliese is kidnapped, however, Erika is tasked with posing as the princess, and even court a foreign king, until the real princess is found.

Eventually, Anneliese finds a way to restore the country's fortune without a political marriage, and the king ends up falling in love with Erika. Over the years, the film has developed a cult following online, particularly over the character of Preminger.

  • Al's Toy Barn appears to be a parody of Toys "R" Us , which shut down in 2018 , but The American Dream Mall recently opened a new flagship store.
  • When Etch A Sketch draws a map to Al's Toy Barn, the address displays 1001 W. Cutting Boulevard, which is the address of Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, California .
  • Just before the toys reach Al's Toy Barn, Hamm makes a joke parodying the riddle: "Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side!"
  • The shot of Andy 's Buzz Lightyear climbing up the display only to encounter the new Buzz Lightyear standing tall resembles the one of Woody climbing up Andy's bed , only to encounter the original Buzz standing tall in the first Toy Story .
  • Characters from A Bug's Life are visible as toys inside the store.
  • After Al McWhiggin compliments the Cleaner for fixing Woody and claims, "He's just like new!", the movie cuts back to the Toy Barn and shows a sign saying the word "NEW!".
  • One ball from Luxo, Jr. is visible immediately after entering the store. When leaving the store, a container of those balls can be seen to the left of the door (a sign on the container reads "Fresh Farm Balls"). A ball is also shown in the commercial for the store earlier in the film.
  • Barbie 's dance steps are based on Ann-Margret 's moves in Viva Las Vegas .
  • One of the levels in Toy Story 2: The Video Game is a space-themed section of Al's Toy Barn called "Al's Space Land", where the majority of toys there are of Buzz Lightyear and Emperor Zurg . There's also an arcade with a claw machine and ball pit (similar to Pizza Planet ). Oddly enough, the Aliens from Pizza Planet are being sold there as well.
  • In Toy Story 3: The Video Game , tokens are used at Al's Toy Barn on the game board to buy new toys that can be used in Woody's Roundup .
  • Additionally, the phrase made famous in Jurassic Park , "Objects in mirrors are closer than they appear," is also visible on the mirror of the car that the toys drive in the store.
  • Buckets of toy soldiers (like the one in Andy's room ) are seen when Hamm, Slinky , Mr. Potato Head, and Rex bump into them while driving in the car.
  • The pink bear from the first film is shown being sold in the store.
  • Al's Toy Barn is seen sponsoring Racer 75 in the Cars teaser trailer.
  • In the Can You Find the Difference Seek & See book, on the difference page on the right side, the sign outside has "Big" in front of "Al's", making the sign now say "Big Al's Toy Barn".
  • In Monopoly: Disney/Pixar Edition , players can use Al's Toy Barn currency to rent due to it being Pixar-themed.
  • In Disney Crossy Road for the mobile app, Al's Toy Barn is a playable environment featured in Toy Story 2 .
  • In Disney Magic Kingdoms , the crescent moon icon on the game's version of Al's Toy Barn more closely resembles the Funmeister mascot of Walt Disney World 's former Pleasure Island area than the film's moon.
  • Al's Toy Barn also makes a cameo outside of Pixar. It is featured in the Megas XLR episode "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Coop".

What's Barbie About?

While the iconic doll has had her fair share of animated films for at-home viewing, this will be the first time a live-action adaptation will make its way into theaters. Starring Robbie and Gosling as the film’s main Barbie and Ken, respectively, the storyline follows Barbie after she’s been booted from Barbieland, given no choice but to make it in the real world. Boasting a star-studded cast, the film will also feature performances by Simu Liu , Kate McKinnon , John Cena , Dua Lipa , Issa Rae , Rhea Perlman , Will Ferrell , Kingsley Ben-Adir , Michael Cera , and so many more. The third feature from Gerwig, Barbie follows the director’s successful and Academy Award-nominated films, Lady Bird and Little Women .

Hear about the Barbie tour straight from Gosling and Robbie in the promo below and stay tuned for more information on when you can expect the Barbie Corvette to drive into a city near you.

All the best pictures from Barbie: The World Tour

A new book charts all the colourful looks worn by Margot Robbie on the Barbie press tour

In one of the most literal and dedicated forms of ' Method Dressing ' we've ever seen, Robbie's red-carpet looks throughout Barbie 's promotion – from pink Valentino polka-dots to playful gingham Prada ensembles – were inspired by outfits worn by the doll herself, expertly re-created by top designers with the help of Robbie's stylist, Andrew Mukamal. Now, a new book, Barbie: The World Tour , pays homage to this epic feat of life imitating art, with photographs by Craig McDean charting all of Robbie's Barbie-coded outfits.

Accompanying McDean's sumptuous photography are images of original Barbie dolls from the period, a treasure trove of rare materials from Mattel's Barbie fashion archives, and the designers' sketches and Polaroids from fittings. With text by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal, as well as handwritten contributions from the designers behind the looks, the book is a unique look behind the curtain at one of the most iconic tourdrobes in recent memory.

"The work that Andrew did in bringing all these elements together – the history of Barbie, the research he did through the Mattel archives, bringing in designers who had a childhood connection with Barbie or found inspiration in her for their later careers, or even just sensing what the world in general was getting excited about and trying to create moments for them – it was amazing, and it felt like that should all be celebrated," writes Robbie.

Here, we delve into our favourite photographs from the book. 'Barbie: The World Tour' by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal (Rizzoli New York, 2024) is out now.

"It wasn’t just looking into the history of Barbie and the history of Mattel but also going into the knowledge that I had already accumulated just through work and interest in these different fashion houses and understanding their signatures, their codes, the things they’re most famous for," writes Mukamal in the book, of finding the designers – and the outfits – for Robbie.

Margot Robbie as 'Day to Night' Barbie in Versace

barbie world tour

Robbie wore this look, designed by Donatella Versace, to the Barbie premiere in Seoul. Featuring a pink and white skirt suit with a matching boater hat, pointed pumps, a mini bag and a glittery pink phone, it's one of the most famous from the whole tour.

Sketches by Donatella Versace

barbie world tour

"My first memory of Barbie was seeing her iconic blonde hair and understanding she was a powerful woman who could be anything. A total inspiration!" wrote Donatella Versace on one of her inspiration sketches for Robbie's 'Day to Night' Barbie outfit. Also pictured is a sketch of the second look Robbie wore to the Seoul premiere, which featured a shimmering bodice and tulle skirt – also based on one of the doll's original designs.

A sketch by Andreas Kronthaler

text, letter

"Without Barbie, I would not be a fashion designer," reads a note by designer Andreas Kronthaler, affixed to a sketch for the Vivienne Westwood dress Robbie wore to the European Barbie premiere, held in London. On the night, Robbie wore a couture gown modelled on the 'Enchanted Evening' doll from 1990, which was made from blush satin and embroidered white tulle, which she accessorised with ivory opera gloves, a pearl choker and a rose brooch.

Margot Robbie in Chanel

a woman posing for a picture

The Barbie tour was actually cut short due to the SAG-AFTRA strike , meaning not every look made it onto the red carpet. All were photographed, however – meaning this is one of the first looks at Robbie in a Barbie-inspired Chanel jacket and skirt.

Margot Robbie as 'Cherry Pie Picnic' Barbie in Bottega Veneta

a person sitting in a chair

Mukamal's inspiration for this look was the 'Cherry Pie Picnic' Barbie from 2015, and featured turn-up jeans by Bottega Veneta, a red belt and a tie-up floral shirt, along with Manolo Blahnik mules. "For an early morning talk show, we loved the idea of wearing Matthieu Blazy’s version of 'Cherry Pie Picnic' for Bottega Veneta: something surprising, our only denim look of the tour and a step away from pink," writes Mukamal in the book.
