Toy story 2 [ ].
While Mr. Potato Head , Slinky Dog , Rex , and Hamm are driving around Al's Toy Barn in a toy car looking for Al 's office, where they plan to find Woody , they come down the Barbie aisle and Hamm asks them for help. Tour Guide Barbie dives in the car with them agrees to help them. She takes them down the Hot Wheels Aisle and then the Buzz Lightyear Aisle where they come across Utility Belt Buzz Lightyear , thinking it's Andy 's Buzz Lightyear , and give him a lift.
In the bloopers , she says goodbye to the viewers, before complaining about her cheeks killing her, having to smile so much.
- This is also based on a real event. Because of the success of the first Toy Story , Buzz Lightyear toys had a higher demand than retailers expected.

Toy Story 2 [ ]
When Hamm, Mr. Potato Head, Rex, and Slinky Dog are lost, they drive by the pink aisle where she and all the other Barbies are partying in. As Hamm asks the Barbies for advice, Tour Guide Barbie votes to volunteer as she jumps into the car that they are driving and gives a tour around Al's Toy Barn. She is implied to be a Polygot, or at least bilingual, as she tells Rex in both English and Spanish to remain in the car after Rex disembarked from the car (to catch the manual for the video game Buzz Lightyear: Attack on Zurg), and, in a similar fashion to a scene in Jurassic Park, chased it down to get back in. Then she drives the toys into the Buzz Lightyear aisle, where they pick up the Utility Belt Buzz, not knowing that the real Buzz was tied up and imprisoned in a cardboard box sitting on the shelf. She then continues the tour with the toys, leaving the real Buzz behind.
She later appears at the end of the outtakes, saying goodbye to the audience. After it's done, she complains about how smiling hurts her cheeks.
- Tour Guide Barbie is the first instance of a toy briefly switching it's language from English to Spanish, which Buzz would eventually do when he became Spanish Buzz in Toy Story 3 . However, in the Spanish version of the film, she repeats the statement in French.
- Tour Guide Barbie's statement about retailers not ordering enough Buzz Lightyear dolls to meet demand is an in-joke and a fact. Because the toy sellers underestimated the box office performance of the original Toy Story when it was released in 1995, they did not order enough dolls to keep up with demand.

Toy Story 2 [ ]
In Toy Story 2 while Hamm , Rex , Mr. Potato Head , and Slinky are looking for Woody , they come across a party of Barbies in the girls toy aisle.
After some time gawking at the female toys, Hamm asks if any of them know where they can find Al of Al’s Toy Barn. Tour Guide Barbie pops out and says that she can help and enters the car. She then takes control and, without asking, decides to tour the toys around the store. Eventually, Tour Guide Barbie and the rest of the toys run into the wrong Buzz, and eventually let him in the car. At some point, Barbie finally drops the toys off at Al’s office.
In the Outtakes, Barbie is the last speaking character, and waves to the viewers and tells them what to do, and states that she and the crew hope they enjoyed the movie. Shortly after, she gives up the smiling, and states to the cameramen that she needs a break from doing so.

The Real Toys of Toy Story 2 (1999)
Previously I’ve written about all of the toys that graced our screens in 1995 when Toy Story came out. Many of the toys featured in the film were based off of real life toys from various decades, including Mr. Potato Head, Slinky Dog, Etch A Sketch, the Troll Dolls , and more. Some of the toys can be traced back to the 1890s! When Toy Story 2 was released, it introduced to a bunch of new toys in Andy’s room, more of which have a history behind them as well. Let’s take a look at some of these new characters in Toy Story 2 and some of the other Toy Story characters we missed in part 1 that are based off of real life toys.
Barbie is unarguably one of the most popular toys that ever joined the Toy Story gang, and became an instrumental character in the later films. The Barbie doll is the creation of Ruth Handler and Elliott Handler, part founders of the toy company Mattel, after they witnessed their daughter Barbara Handler playing with a paper doll that had more mature features. The doll market in the 1950s mostly consisted of baby dolls or dolls that resembled little girls, such as the Tiny Tears dolls. The couple realized there was an opportunity to seize with children looking to play with dolls that looked more like adults, to be imaginative about what the future looked like for them. There was an adult-like doll that existed at the time in 1955 in Germany called Bild Lilli, but they were mostly sold in truck shops and not intended for children’s play initially. Handler took the inspiration of the look of Bild Lilli and the intention that children could dress Barbie up to learn about fashion, and created the very first version, to be unveiled on March 9th, 1959 at the New York City Toy Fair. Commercials began airing for the new toy, often between showing of The Mickey Mouse Club , and demand for it came in fast. Mattel was on a steady uphill outcome since Barbie’s release, as they kept her fresh too by giving her over 200 different jobs and looks. Barbie Sings and Working Barbie came out in the 1960s, College Barbie, Dentist Barbie and Astronaut Barbie in the 1990s, President Barbie in 2000, and more.
The very first Barbie. Image from: https://www.invaluable.com/blog/vintage-barbie-dolls/
Mattel was hesitant at first to release the rights of Barbie to Pixar to feature her in the first film, as the company wanted her personality to be formed by the children playing with her, and not create a pre-determined personality to be portrayed on screen. Pixar approached Mattel again after the success of the first Toy Story, and they agreed to allow them to do so. Oren Jacob , a producer at Pixar, mentioned how Mattel was still on the fence about this idea even after the sequel, and it took them another film to be able to agree to release Ken as well. So, now with permissions, Barbie was introduced in Toy Story 2 not as a singular character, but a few versions of Barbie appeared. The first one was Tour Guide Barbie, who the gang meets inside Al’s Toy Barn. Tour Guide Barbie was a made up version of the doll made specifically for the movie. Barbie dolls can also be seen right before Tour Guide Barbie is introduced, having a pool party, all donning different coloured swimsuits. The very first Barbie in March 1959 wore a black and white striped swimsuit. A Barbie in a purple dress is in the backpack near the end that Stinky Pete gets stuck in, and 3 Barbie’s wear sparkly dresses at the end of the film when Wheezy sings “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”.

Jessie is introduced alongside Bullseye and Prospector Stinky Pete in Toy Story 2 as a part of Woody’s Roundup Gang. Originally, she was not planned for this sequel, and the character in her place was going to be a much more prominent antagonist. At the advice of John Lasseter’s wife Nancy, she suggested that the film have a strong female lead introduced, to play opposite of Woody. It only made sense for Jessie to continue the cowgirl theme, but the type of toy she is differs from Woody. As made evident by her flimsy limbs and bright red braids, Jessie is a cowgirl ragdoll.

Ragdolls are the oldest toys on this list, as they can be traced back to the 1630s. The term ragdoll comes from the fact that they were made out of scrap fabrics and materials for children to play with and learn to nurture. During the colonial days, they were mostly made of cornhusks, wood, and wax. They became more widely known and made in the 1840s, all the way up to WWI, as a source of comfort for children. In the early 1900s, a ragdoll named Raggedy Ann was introduced in a book by Johnny Gruelle. She had red hair made of yarn and a triangle nose. Though it’s not confirmed, it can be theorized that Jessie gets her red hair from Raggedy Ann.

mrs. potato head
As mentioned in my previous post, Mr. Potato Head was invented by George Lerner, who wanted to make vegetables more appealing to children by giving them a way to play with them. By 1964, the plastic potato and it’s accessory body parts were being sold across America. It had the same affect on television as Barbie did, as it was the very first TV commercial to be targeted directly to children. Mrs. Potato Head was introduced in 1953, just a year after Mr. Potato Head was officially released. Her conception came after Lerner had sold the rights to the toy to Hasbro.
In Toy Story , though she is never seen, she is referenced twice. First, near the beginning of the movie when Andy is opening his new toys from his birthday party, Mr. Potato Head is heard chanting “Mrs. Potato Head, Mrs. Potato Head, Mrs. Potato Head!”. Though his manifestation doesn’t work out the first time, it does the second time when it’s Molly’s birthday, and it’s confirmed Mrs. Potato Head has arrived.

Bringing it back to the first Toy Story , we move on next to Lenny, our favourite pair of toy binoculars. Unlike the other toys mentioned above, Lenny doesn’t come from a specific brand or household name item, but rather was a kids version of a very real tool. Binoculars were invented by Hans Lippershey, an eyeglass maker who took interest in the telescope after it was invented in 1608. He shared the idea with others about creating a telescope with 2 lenses to use both eyes with. The very first iteration of the invention was made that same year in 1608, and has evolved over centuries with the type of materials it’s made with, the changes in glass, and how it’s used. The Royal Navy began using them instead of telescopes, they became standard practice for armies, and could also be used for casual hobbies like birdwatching or the opera.
Binoculars. Image from: https://www.boatsafe.com/how-to-choose-binoculars/
Lenny plays a significant role in the first 2 Toy Story films, despite being just a supporting character. He always hangs around the group of main characters, and is used during pivotal points of the films, like when he sees Buzz and Woody blasting up the road on their rocket in the moving van, and when Buzz uses him to watch Woody during the yard sale.

Cleverly, RC’s name stands for remote control car. Much like Lenny, RC plays a large part in both stories, despite not having a voice and only Potato Head being able to understand his revs and beeps. RC’s model isn’t based off of a specific model car, but he does resemble a 2WD electric buggy RC car.
RC in Toy Story. Image from: https://youareatoy.wordpress.com/goofs/
Remote controlled cars were invented in the 1960s by a company called Elettronica Giocattoli. The very first one they created was a nitro powered Ferrari 250LM. Just 2 years later, they also came out with the Ferrari P4. Other companies began to catch on to the phenomenon and helped to evolve the technology behind it. The engines in the cars went from being repurposed model airplane engines to ones specially made for the cars, the motors were upgraded, and other brands of cars were used as inspiration. In the 1970s, a Japanese company called Tamiya manufactured even more impressive RC cars, such as the Porsche 934, Ferrari 312T, Tyrrell P34, Toyota Celica, and Lamborghini Countach. Tamiya also introduced the off-road buggy cars, the ones that bear resemblance to RC.

Rock-a-stack
Rock-A-Stack didn’t have a large role in either movie, but was more of a background toy of Andy’s, likely from when he was very young. Nonetheless, it was a toy featured in the film for a reason, as it’s presence only brought more authenticity and credibility to the film. Rock-A-Stack was also featured in the Pixar short film Tin Toy . The idea of Rock-A-Stack came from a toy called the Rocky Color Cone by Jarvis Rockwell in the 1930s. Then in 1960, Rock-A-Stack was introduced by Fisher Price. It was advertised among other colourful plastic Fisher Price toys, like the toy nurse set, colourful spinning tops, and a musical driving wheel. The original toy had a wooden base and plastic rings, but eventually it shifted over to full plastic. They also introduced a giant Rock-A-Stack with a taller center piece and more rings, but gradually they settled on just 5 rings. As of 2011, Rock-A-Stack is number 42 on TIME’s list of 100 greatest toys of all time.

Rocky Gibraltar
Rocky Gibraltar is the typical strong-man toy throughout the films, lifting dumbbells with Buzz, attempting to attack Woody when the gang finds out Woody intentionally threw Buzz out the window, and flinging Woody over his head out of the moving van. Rocky resembles the WWE Wrestling Superstars action figures from the 1980s produced by LJN. They were 8 inch rubber figures based on real life wrestlers, such as Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, Hillbilly Jim, and over 60 others. These were the first wrestling toys that really hit the market in North America and were worthy to sit along the shelves with G.I Joe, Transformers, and Star Wars related toys. Rocky Gibraltar is not a real life wrestler, but by the looks of his muscles and apparent wrestling uniform, it looks like he could be!

The Barbie aisle at Al's Toy Barn
A bunch of Barbies were first seen in Toy Story 2 partying in an aisle at Al's Toy Barn. Rex, Hamm, Mr. Potato Head, and Slinky drive by this aisle, looking for Woody, when the Barbies catch their attention. After Hamm asks for directions to Al (the owner of the store), Tour Guide Barbie jumps into the car and navigates them around Al's Toy Barn. She drives the toys through the Hot Wheels aisle, eventually reaching the Buzz Lightyear aisle, where they pick up a newer Buzz instead of Andy's (who is left behind, having been trapped in the cardboard box by the new Buzz).
Amy's Barbie Doll [ ]
Amy's Barbie
After Andy's toys track down Al's suitcase at the airport to save Woody, they have a fight with the Prospector , who wants to take the Roundup Gang to Japan. Once they stop him by using the flash from Cameras from someone else's luggage in there, they put him in a Barbie backpack that belongs to a girl named Amy . She is surprised by the new "big ugly man doll" as she retrieves her backpack. She then places her Barbie doll in a backpack next to Stinky Pete, to whom she plans to give a makeover. The Barbie next to Stinky Pete tells him he'll like Amy because she's an artist, as she shows Amy's modifications to the other side of her face, much to Stinky Pete's discomfort.
Three Barbie Singers [ ]
The morning after Andy's toys return home from their journey to save Woody, three of Molly's Barbies are seen providing background vocals for a fixed Wheezy as he sings " You've Got a Friend in Me " in celebration.
Outtakes [ ]
During the outtakes, two identical Barbies are seen having a conversation with the Prospector inside his box when he is supposed to be filming a scene. He tells them he will get them a part in Toy Story 3 before the Barbies leave the box. Although this does not happen, a different Barbie does appear in Toy Story 3. After the outtakes, Tour Guide Barbie makes her final appearance, saying "bye-bye" to the audiences, then complaining how her face hurts from smiling so long.
Toy Story 3 [ ]
Molly tossing her Barbie doll into a box bound for Sunnyside.
One of Molly's Barbie dolls has lasted up until this point, but Molly tosses her into a box bound for Sunnyside Daycare . Soon, Andy's toys sneak into the box, joining Barbie to go to Sunnyside as well, now that Andy is going to college. Mrs. Potato Head tries to comfort Barbie, who is crying about being abandoned by Molly. When Woody describes daycare as a sad, lonely place for toys who have no owners, she begins to bawl and sob hysterically.
Barbie Meets Ken for the first time.
At Sunnyside, Barbie first shakes one of Stretch's tentacles. Shortly thereafter, Barbie and the toys meet Lotso, head toy at Sunnyside, who then calls for Ken to join the tour. As Barbie and Ken catch sight of each other, they walk toward one another, and Barbie asks if she and Ken have ever met. Little does Barbie know that Ken is a member of Lotso's gang . As Lotso assigns Andy's toys to the Caterpillar Room , Ken asks Barbie if she wants to live in his Dream House in the Butterfly Room , and when the toys approve, Barbie willingly goes with Ken as she leaves the Caterpillar Room.
That evening, Buzz Lightyear, who has left the Caterpillar Room to go see Lotso, witness Barbie and Ken spending some more time together as they share their love dialogue, until Chunk and Twitch, two of Lotso's evil accomplices, walk by and take Ken with them to head for the Sunnyside Daycare#Vending Machine located down the hallway to gamble. When Ken doesn't seem to come back, Barbie goes out of the Butterfly Room to investigate. Finding Ken in the Caterpillar Room, she asks him what is happening, only for Ken to tell her to wait in his Dream House, but upon discovering that Ken and the other Sunnyside toys has locked up her friends, Barbie becomes angry with Ken and subsequently breaks up with him as she snatches away the scarf she has previously given to him. She is then imprisoned with the rest of the toys.
The next day, after Woody arrives back at Sunnyside to rescue his imprisoned friends, Barbie takes part in Woody's plan to escape the daycare. After Ken and Buzz take roll call, she calls Ken over and begs him to let her stay with him at his Dream House. Hearing Barbie's sobs, Ken becomes stuck in a dilemma, but gives in to Barbie's plea, making her promise to follow his orders. At the Dream House, Barbie is awestruck at Ken's vast collection of clothes, but when Ken, thinking Barbie is still angry at him for what he has done to her friends, bitterly says how no one appreciates his clothes, Barbie sweet-talks him into showing off his many outfits to her, making Ken's spirit reinvigorate. Barbie becomes amused and applauds as Ken shows off his various outfits to her. As Ken shows off his martial arts in his Kung Fu Fighting outfit, Barbie tackles Ken from above and demands him to tell her what Lotso has done to Buzz and how to get Buzz back to normal. Realizing that it is a ploy by Barbie, Ken initially protests, but decides to see her try.
Barbie starts to rip Ken's Nehru jacket
Barbie then ties up Ken (who is now in nothing but his underwear) to a paddle and interrogates him by ripping several of his outfits. Ken tries to remain defiant as much as he can, but when Barbie brings out his Nehru jacket that she claims is from 1967, he begs her not to rip it. Despite Ken's pleas, she starts ripping the jacket until Ken, unable to bear it anymore, mentions about the instruction manual as he falls over in the paddle. As Ken confesses to Barbie that Lotso has switched Buzz to "Demo" mode, Barbie puts down the Nehru and demands Ken to tell her where to find the manual, then disguises herself using Ken's space suit and asks Bookworm to hand her the Buzz Lightyear instruction manual (Bookworm becomes disgusted when he sees "Ken" wearing high heels).
With the manual in hand, Barbie catches up with Woody and Slinky, then they return to the Caterpillar Room to catch up with Hamm and Rex, who have trapped Buzz in a storage bin, but Buzz kicks the bin off and tries to escape. After Hamm and Rex recapture Buzz and hold him down, Barbie unscrews Buzz's back compartment so Woody and Rex can have access to the "Play-Demo" switch and the reset hole, respectively. However, the toys end up resetting Buzz into a Spanish version of his deluded, Space Ranger self, leaving Barbie and the others in bewilderment. With time running short, they escape Sunnyside through the garbage chute, but Lotso and his gang corner them. Barbie, supporting Jessie's claims about Sunnyside not being a place for family but a prison and Lotso being a liar and a bully, stands up and tells Lotso with her surprising understanding of civics: "Authority should derive from the consent of the governed, not from the threat of force!" Lotso then signals Stretch to push the toys, including Barbie, into the dumpster.
Barbie hugs a newly-reformed Ken
Just then, Ken appears, having come for Barbie, and tries to stop Lotso, making Barbie surprised at his sudden appearance. Lotso mocks Ken for loving Barbie, stating that there are hundred million Barbie dolls everywhere, only for Ken to remark to Barbie not like the one he met, making her affectionate again. Angered, Lotso grabs Ken and throws him across the dumpster to force him to join Barbie. Woody catches Ken and pulls him up to the chute with help from the other toys. Barbie runs over and hugs Ken, making him astonished to have won her back. When the toys end up being loaded into a garbage truck, Barbie attempts to help, but is stopped by Ken from risking her life. Barbie is shocked to see her friends being loaded into the garbage and screams sadly as Ken holds her.
Barbie and Ken, new leaders of Sunnyside, as seen during the credits.
Barbie later makes amends and reconciles with Ken, and the two reestablish their relationship, becoming boyfriend and girlfriend once again. Together, they revolutionize Sunnyside, turning the daycare into a true toy paradise for all toys, and become its new leaders. Under the couple's leadership, the daycare toys now rotate their time between the Butterfly Room and the Caterpillar Room, hold beach parties at the sandbox, and have discos in the Butterfly Room.
The next day, the toys, now residing at Bonnie 's house as her new toys, receive a message from the daycare informing them that Sunnyside has become sunny once again. They read the message and assume that Barbie has written it (as remarked by Buzz about the fancy handwriting), only to find Ken's signature at the end, much to their dread.
Hawaiian Vacation [ ]
Barbie posing for a picture for Ken in Hawaiian Vacation
Barbie is first seen along with Ken as they unzip Bonnie's backpack and emerge into Bonnie's room. There, they meet Woody, Buzz, and other toys , but Ken becomes depressed when he finds out that he and Barbie have ended up in Bonnie's room and missed their "flight" to Hawaii. After Ken sinks back into Bonnie's backpack in great depression, Barbie reveals to Woody and the others the vacation plans she and Ken have formulated for each other.
Later, Barbie calls for Ken to come out, and when Ken opens the backpack, he is greeted by Jessie's enthusiastic "ALOHA!" then finds himself standing in "paradise" with Barbie. Woody and his friends recreate "Hawaii" for the couple, such as deep-sea diving, guided nature walk, and an entertaining dinner. After their various adventures in "Hawaii," Ken and Barbie share their first kiss in the snow at sunrise, as Woody and his friends watch through a window, but then the two fall into the snow, prompting the toys to come to their rescue by digging them out and releasing them from a block of ice.
Toy Story 4 [ ]
Barbie in Toy Story 4 .
Barbie makes a silent appearance during the flashback in Toy Story 4 . Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and Slinky come to Molly's room to enlist Bo Peep in helping them rescue R.C. who has been lost outside in a thunderstorm. Bo calls on her and two other barbies to help with "Operation Pull Toy." Molly's toys create a catapult and Jessie gets on, then on Bo's command, Barbie and her friends jump on the catapult and launch Jessie into the air so she can unlock the bedroom window. It can be assumed she was saddened by Bo's departure after being given away to a new family. Two years after the third film, she presumably still runs Sunnyside with Ken.
Toy Description [ ]
From Official Website:
The original "Great Shape Barbie" doll from 1983.
- All the Barbie dolls who appear in the series are voiced by Jodi Benson, famous for voicing Ariel in Disney's The Little Mermaid movie trilogy and TV series. She also voiced Barbie in many commercials for the doll, and on CD-ROM games with the character.
- In addition, her personality was intended to be modeled after Sarah Connor from the Terminator franchise, even saying, "Come with me if you want to live," when she rescued Woody and Buzz from Sid's mansion, with Woody remarking in reply that he "Wish[ed] [Woody] was anatomically correct."
- The phrase, "Love your leg warmers," which Ken says to Barbie in their first meeting, was used in the original Great Shape Barbie toy commercial.
- The two other Barbies that appear with Barbie in Toy Story 4 have a resemblance to the dolls Christie and Teresa who were Barbie's friends in the Mattel franchise.

Christie, the SEC, and Amy Schumer: the long road to get Barbie on the big screen
A complete barbie timeline, from the first mattel doll to the first mattel feature film.
Barbie, as a phenomenon, has always been larger than life. Since she first hit the scene, she transcended classic kids’ toys (and specifically, toys marketed to girls) and became a sensation in her own right. Now she’s about to transcend all over again—evolving from her typically diminutive stature to tower above us all on the big screen. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie premieres on July 21, marking a major milestone in the character’s storied history.
Related Content
Of course, it all started with an idea back in the 1950s from entrepreneur Ruth Handler “to create a doll that showed girls they had choices” (to hear Mattel tell it). From there, Barbie became an icon and eventually a movie star, though the path to her own theatrical vehicle was not always clear.
Per the official Barbie timeline , the brand-new doll debuted at the New York Toy Fair on March 9, 1959. It was an innovation in the American market, wherein the popular toys for girls were baby or toddler dolls. Barbie (full name: Barbara Millicent Roberts) was designed to reflect ’50s fashion and debuted in a glamorous black-and-white bathing suit with a curly ponytail. The look and Barbie’s inception are dramatized in a 2001: A Space Odyssey parody scene in Gerwig’s film. (Barbara Handler, daughter of Ruth and inspiration for the Barbie character, also has a cameo in the movie .)
As Barbie soared in popularity, Mattel was apparently “inundated” with requests to give the doll a boyfriend, per Forbes . In response, the company created Ken , a male doll that was named after Handler’s son Kenneth. Like Barbie, he debuted in his bathing suit, a pair of red swim trunks. This set the blueprint for Ken-ergy, as Barbie ’s Ryan Gosling has explained the character’s job is “ just beach .” Barbie’s Dreamhouse, another signature piece of Barbie lore, was rolled out just a year later in 1962.
Amid the Civil Rights movement, Mattel released its first Black doll, a friend of Barbie’s called Christie, who joined the growing Barbie universe (which included Barbie’s bestie Midge, played in the film by Emerald Fennell, and a younger sister named Skipper). While Barbie would eventually end up with a cast of supporting characters (and a range of special celeb dolls, the first of which was Twiggy in 1967), a diverse set of dolls actually named “Barbie” wouldn’t come around until 1980.
1985 - 1995
Valid criticisms of capitalism and glorifying a specific type of blonde, white womanhood aside, one of the core tenets of the Barbie line was that girls can do anything, as demonstrated by the We Girls Can Do Anything campaign in 1985. After all, Barbie became an astronaut way back in ’65, before man had ever set foot on the moon. As the wide-ranging cast of Barbie shows, Barbie has had a number of jobs. In 1985, she became a CEO; in 1992, she launched her first campaign for president. According to Mattel , she’s had “over 250 inspirational careers,” including pilot, firefighter, journalist, entrepreneur, surgeon, and many more.
(As an aside, by this point Handler had resigned from Mattel and was indicted for making false financial statements, alongside some other Mattel execs, by the SEC. She pleaded no contest, per Forbes . Girls can do anything!)
Barbie made her big screen debut in Pixar’s Toy Story franchise. A script for the first film included Barbie saving Woody and Buzz from Sid’s house, but Mattel apparently refused to license the rights. When Toy Story became a massive success, Mattel changed its tune; “Tour Guide Barbie” was featured in 1999’s Toy Story 2 , her theatrical debut. She would go on to have an even bigger role in 2010’s Toy Story 3 .
October 2001
In the early 2000s, Mattel took Barbie’s film career in its own hands with the formation of Barbie Entertainment. Under this new media wing, the company released a series of animated movies that aired on Nickelodeon and were also available on DVD. The first, Barbie In The Nutcracker , was released in October 2001, the first in a series of classic and fairy tale adaptations. There were also a handful of original plots, like the Barbie: Fairytopia sub-series. These TV movies aren’t exactly up to Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach Barbie standards (or even, necessarily, Noah Baumbach Madagascar standards ), but they are much beloved by a certain generation of Barbie enthusiasts, if the Barbie As Princess And The Pauper song meme is anything to go by. Mattel has continued to release animated features, under various banners, through 2023.
September 2009
Mattel officially dipped its toe in the water at putting Barbie on the big screen by partnering with Universal Pictures in 2009. At the time, Laurence Mark was set to produce, per Variety . According to Mattel’s Richard Dickson at the time, Barbie hadn’t gotten her own starring vehicle yet because “The brand wasn’t ready for a movie” up to that point, but Barbie had “evolved from a toy into an intellectual property” over the previous 10 years, so now, ostensibly, she was ready. That proved incorrect, of course, as several studios and production teams would take a crack at Barbie over the next 14 years to no avail.
By 2014, Mattel had jumped ship from Universal and set up shop with Sony. Jenny Bicks was originally set to pen the script for the live-action comedy, produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald (via Deadline ). By March 2015, Diablo Cody had been brought in to rewrite the script, and Amy Pascal had joined the production team.
In later years, Cody was frank that she was “literally incapable of turning in a Barbie draft.” Reflecting in 2023 , she said, “When I was first hired for this, I don’t think the culture had not embraced the femme or the bimbo as valid feminist archetypes yet.” Cody added that “they wanted a girl-boss feminist twist on Barbie, and I couldn’t figure it out because that’s not what Barbie is.”
In the meantime, Barbie entered the influencer age and became a vlogger. Her YouTube channel hosts content that ranges from Barbie explaining her day-to-day life to thoughtful conversations about mental health. Plenty to tide her adoring public over during the crawl to the big screen.
December 2016
Sony had commissioned three additional Barbie drafts (from Lindsey Beer, Bert Royal, and Hilary Winston, per Deadline ) before Amy Schumer came on board in December 2016. She signed up to star in the movie, and took a pass at the script with her sister Kim Caramele. This version was supposed to be about a “perfect land of Barbies” where one woman realizes she doesn’t belong. She would then be “expelled from the idealistic land and journeys to the real world, where she discovers that being unique is an asset.” Schumer eventually left the project due to what she called “creative differences.”
The studio “definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it,” Schumer later said , adding that she was rubbed the wrong way when she was gifted a pair of Manolo Blahnik heels when she was cast: “The idea that that’s just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, ‘You’ve got the wrong gal.’”
After Schumer departed, Sony took one last stab at Barbie by bringing Anne Hathaway on board. Hathaway reportedly handpicked up-and-coming director Alethea Jones to helm this new (ultimately unrealized) version of the movie. Oceans Eight scribe Olivia Milch was also reportedly brought on to do yet another rewrite, per Deadline . By early 2018, this version was already dead in the water , and the whole operation was put on hold until at least May 2020 (which turned out to be optimistic).
Things took a turn for the better for Ms. Barbie when Sony’s film rights lapsed and Warner Bros. Pictures took the wheel. Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment has a first-look deal with the studio, which paved the way for her to both produce and star in the film. From there, she invited Greta Gerwig on board , who invited her partner Noah Baumbach on board. LuckyChap managed to protect Gerwig and Baumbach’s creative process from the powers that be at WB and Mattel; prior to completion of the script, the filmmaker shared only one abstract poem (which “shares some similarities with the Apostles’ Creed”) with the higher-ups to demonstrate her vision for the film, according to a 2023 Vogue profile.
October 2021
Ryan Gosling made history when cast as the first live-action Ken, a groundbreaking moment that would alter his Ken-ergy forevermore.
Gosling later said that after Gerwig offered him the role, he told her he needed time to think about it. After hanging up on the director, he walked into his backyard to find a Ken doll “face-down in the mud next to a squished lemon.” He took a photo, sent it to Gerwig, and said “I shall be your Ken. For his story must be told.”
February - April 2022
We knew very little about Barbie in 2022, but we did know one thing: the cast was chock-full of famous people. America Ferrera joined in February; Marvel’s Simu Liu was announced in March. Kate McKinnon, Ariana Greenblatt, and Alexandra Shipp were also announced as part of the cast that month, and then a whole bunch more (Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, and Will Ferrell, to name just a few) in April. That month, we also got our first look at Robbie as Barbie , and it was very pink.
By July, we’d had our first look at Gosling’s Ken , and it also became clear that most of the people who were cast were all playing the same characters: Barbies and Kens. The Barbies were all having sleepovers after filming , and the Kens were praising Gerwig and Baumbach’s script as the best thing they’d ever read . This is pretty typical of the Barbie/Ken dynamic, as we now know.
December 2022
The first teaser trailer for Barbie arrived in December 2022, and the picture of one of the summer’s most hotly anticipated films was becoming more clear. We’d seen Barbie and Ken rollerskating and gotten wind of Will Ferrell’s villainous Mattel exec . Now, there was a Helen Mirren-narrated 2001 pastiche explaining the origins of Barbie.
April was a big month in Barbie world. We got a new teaser trailer and an array of gorgeous character posters , which introduced the world to a crucial new meme format: “She’s everything. He’s just Ken.” Footage also premiered at CinemaCon , in which it became clear that this Barbie is suffering from an existential crisis.
A full-length trailer for Barbie , first seen at CinemaCon, finally hit the Internet in May. After that, the Barbie press tour—which already seemed to have been going on forever—kicked off in earnest. Barbie gave a tour of the Dreamhouse . Airbnb offered a Dreamhouse . Robbie rocked a bunch of Barbie looks and Gosling kept going on about Ken-ergy. The soundtrack made a huge splash, particularly the Nicki Minaj/Ice Spice collab that provided a fresh take on Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” The movie launched over 100 brand partnerships , and we found out the movie used up the world’s entire supply of pink paint . The Internet, in general, had a ball.
Unfortunately, the fun had to come to an end. On the heels of the film causing an international incident (involving the controversial “nine-dash line” map ), SAG-AFTRA joined the WGA on strike , essentially cutting all promotion of Hollywood short. A brief extension of the contract allowed Barbie to get a couple of red-carpet premieres in, but unfortunately, Ryan Gosling is no longer allowed to talk about Ken-ergy . They’d done their jobs, though: Barbie is projected to make around $100 million in its first weekend, per Variety . (Bonus: according to AMC, 20,000 moviegoers are doing the “Barbenheimer” double feature .)
