trolltunga winter tour

Trolltunga Winter Hike

Trolltunga Winter hike is an expedition far from the ordinary. The sun slowly rises above the snow-covered mountains. Everything around you begin to sparkle and you in the company of your guide and travel companions set out to experience Trolltunga covered in ice and snow. If you want to avoid the summer crowds – put snowshoes on and start your winter adventure.

We call our tours to Trolltunga "winter" from December to May as you will encounter a lot of snow during the entire day. During this period, it is very likely to use snowshoes or spikes on the hike. Be aware that the snow conditions can be varied through out the season, which determines the difficulty of the hike.

Price from 1575-1750 NOK (below 25y and student price). Also check our 10% discount package if staying at Trolltunga Hotel.

About the activity

You meet the guide and the other participants at our store in Skjeggedal/P2 parking. After breefing about the tour, weather, checking that all are particpants are well prepare (we have rental of gear if needed), the tour starts.

On most tours we provide transport from the P2 parking to the Mågelitopp/P3 parking (if the weather conditions allow it)! At Mågelitopp, we will walk among several traditional Norwegian cabins and we might put on spikes or snowshoes if necessary. After that we must “conquer” the steepest uphill of the hike - Gryteskar.

After the uphill, wehve easy up and down terrain until we reach the "Troll's Tongue", with spectacular natur views along the way. You can admire the snowy mountains, the Ringedalen valley with its steep mountain walls and frozen waterfalls, and amazing formations that the wind has carved into snow. Can there be a better reward? Naturally, there are several breaks on the way to refresh yourself and simply enjoy the atmosphere within the group while your guides explain more about local history and nature. Listen to the guides' advices, they know all the best photo spots! Soon enough you will arrive to Trolltunga in its winter suit rising above the "Lake of the Rings" and with Folgefonna glacier in the distance. Here it is time for photoshoot and more stories.

The return back home is often a lot easier, we have a good snowtrail to walk on, more downhill, good memories, new hiking friends to talk with, in some cases we get a nice sunset walking down Gryteskar. And then the great finale, sliding down the road from P3 to P2/4 km on a snowracer. A fun and easy ending of the day!

Be aware that the weather during the Norwegian winter is unpredictable, it can change at any time! Trolltunga Active has arranged guided winter tours to Trolltunga since 2015 and our experienced and professional guides have the utmost respect for the mountains. They will share their knowledge with you, show you how to prepare and hike safely during winter and how to 'read' the weather. Your safety is our priority!

That is why on the iciest days, we cannot guarantee that it will be safe to go down on the rock itself. We will make sure to show you alternative and equally beautiful photo spots and that you will feel like a true explorer after this one-day adventure.

If you are younger than 25 years of age or a student, you can choose the price option of 'Young Travellers & Students'. At the meetup you must show documentation on your age or a student pass.

Good to know

Level of difficulty: Expert

The weather conditions greatly determine the level of difficulty.  Please inform your guide of any medical conditions that might impact you during your hike or in an emergency.

Requirements:

  • Good physical condition
  • Not suitable for people with troublesome knees
  • Minimum age: 15 years
  • A minimum number of 2 participants for the tour to run

Approximately 8-12 hrs • 20-28 km return • 800-1200 m ascent

We recommend joining the information meeting at Trolltunga Hotel at 9 pm the night before your hike.

7:30 am: Meet your guide and travel companions at the Trolltunga Active Base in Skjeggedal 20, 5770 Tyssedal. Beware the road to Skjeggedal is your first adventure for today, depending on the weather conditions good winter tires, spikes or snow chains are crucial.

During the winter, the conditions in the mountains are unpredictable. They can change from minute to minute. Temperature can be deceiving as the wind plays an important role in how cold it feels. Similarly, the snow conditions have a great impact on how easy or hard the hike gets.

A general thumb rule is: prepare for the worst conditions but do not overload your backpack, weight matters greatly when it is about saving energy. Use the onion look: layers that can easily be taken on and off. On a sunny day remember that the snow reflects the sun light which makes it stronger – suncream and sunglasses are essential!

We do not cancel tours due to bad weather. Even if the conditions look harsh, they can also turn out to be much better once we reach the mountains. The only times we cancel is when the bad weather becomes dangerous weather. We will inform you in case of cancellation. Please read our cancellation policies for more information.

  • A lot of food: at least double of what you would eat on a normal day (sandwiches, nuts, chocolate, banana)
  • 2 litres of water (nice to have: thermos with hot water) – you cannot fill up water in the winter mountain
  • Sturdy, waterproof and warm hiking boots
  • Warm woolen socks and spare socks
  • Woolen base layer (do not use cotton: it is freezing cold when it is wet)
  • Warm mid layer
  • Wind- and waterproof shell jacket and pants
  • Beanie or warm headband
  • Gloves/mittens and a spare pair
  • Sunglasses and/or goggles (helpful in snow and wind)
  • Head lamp
  • Backpack with approximately 40 litres capacity

Please make sure to leave a bit of space in your backpack for the micro spikes and be aware that you should be able to strap snowshoes onto the backpack you are bringing.

You can rent certain pieces of equipment on site: rain pants and jackets, hiking boots, backpacks.

To book a private guide, choose the option ‘Private guide’. A group with a private guide, can include up to 8 participants/the price is equal to the price of 8 persons booked. For the private guide, make a booking for 8 persons, when placing your booking info, write ‘Private guide xx persons’ in the cell for your first name. And your full name in the cell for the last name.

The long-term weather forecast can be unreliable. We rely on the forecast 2-3 days in advance. Besides, old Norwegian wisdom teaches us: there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. If you are booked on a hike with us and the weather conditions are so bad that they might threaten our safety, we will cancel the tour.

If you choose to not show up for your tour, there is no refund. If we cancel due to the weather, you get a full refund or change to another day. This might happen due to high avalanche risk or strong winds. Please read our General Terms and Conditions for more information.

No, however it is highly recommended. This is where you meet one of our guides and your travel companions in person. The guide will tell you about tomorrow’s weather conditions, what to wear, what to bring and safety precautions. You are welcome to ask any questions that you have.

Yes, you can. We rent out wind- and waterproof/-resistant jackets, pants, shoes and backpacks.

If you are the only person booked on a tour, we will ask you to move your booking to another day. If this is not possible, you will be refunded. You can wait until the evening before the hike to see if there are any last-minute bookings. Alternatively, if you really want to go and cannot reschedule, you can pay for a second ticket.

It is not mandatory, but it is recommended to use a guide in the period of 1 October – 31 May. This is due to uncertainty related to weather, snow, rivers, which previously have led to several rescue operations.

The transport is free only if you are staying at our partner hotel - Trolltunga Hotel. The hotel provides free transport to the meeting point as part of the accommodation.

If you are younger than 25 years of age or a student, you can choose the price option of 'Young Travellers & Students'.

At the meetup you must show documentation on your age or a student pass.

Winter Tour to Trolltunga

Trolltunga is one of Norway's most spectacular, and photographed places. The rock formation hanging 1,100 meters over the Ringdalsvatnet lake is, literarily, a breathtaking view. In winter this place is even more fascinating, and going on a winter hike to Trolltunga is an experience of a lifetime!

This year you are invited on a winter hiking tour to Trolltunga, to explore a new season, join in on a unique hiking adventure! Led by professional guides, you'll get to safely explore a natural wonder at its most tranquil and awe-inspiring.

Tour description

The tour starts from Skjeggedal. In the midst of darkness, the group hikes with headlamps up the Brakufsi path to Topp. Then the steep hillside up Gryteskar, the highest peak of the tour.

This late in the year, weather conditions are constantly changing. If needed, the guide will help adjust the equipment you use (ice spikes, snowshoes, etc.) in accordance with the changing conditions.

It’s a tough 7 km start, and we will have several stops where you get the opportunity to catch your breath. And to snap photos of the spectacular nature surrounding you. From Gryteskar you'll get a perfect view towards the Folgefonna glacier. The hike continues with 7 km in easier terrain. This is the scenic part of the tour, being overwhelmed by impressing viewpoints towards the Ringedalen lake and the Hardangervidda national park, makes this part of the hike like a “scenic walk in the park”.

You will arrive at Trolltunga around 13.00. At this time of year, you will have the Trolltunga almost for yourself. You can really enjoy the peace and tranquility of being in the mountain and standing at Trolltunga.

During the afternoon, the light changes, the daylight disappears, maybe into a colorful sunset, the blue hour, and then total darkness. And it's on with the headlamps again. The day ends with a magical walk in the dark, maybe a clear sky, stars, and a white full moon. Or, with rain, fog, and wind. The weather conditions at this time of year will guarantee you a special moment filled with splendid contrast.

Trolltunga hike – a hike to a magical destination

The hike to the Trolltunga cliff is demanding because of the great distance. Experienced hikers may hike on their own during the summer. The safest alternative is to join a guided hike, and you need to be in good shape. If you start your hike from parking lot at P2 Skjeggedal, you should allow 8–12 hours (including breaks) for the 27-km round-trip hike to Trolltunga: 13.5 km each way. Be sure to start early in the morning so you can make it safely back down before dark.

If you are driving, take the Tyssedal turnoff from route Rv13 and head for the paid parking at P2 Skjeggedal. Alternatively, you can take the convenient shuttle bus from the town of Odda. If you take the shuttle bus to the upper parking lot, P3 Mågelitopp, or have reserved one of the few parking spots here, then your hike is shorter. Please allow 7–10 hours for the now 20-km round-trip hike to Trolltunga.

The text about the hike continues under the map.

  • The hike to Trolltunga

Your first steep climbs From P2 Skjeggedal, walk the narrow paved road that climbs up to P3 Mågelitopp, which is 400 metres higher. This first leg is 4.3 km long and may take you a bit more than an hour. Naturally, if you are starting from P3 Mågelitopp, you save time and effort!

You are now ready to start on the mountain trail itself – another 10 km and you will reach Trolltunga!

At first the hiking trail proper is fairly level, following an gentle elevated valley, and the trail is excellent and well-marked. After 45 minutes or so, your route climbs steeply up a long rocky slope to Gryteskaret pass. This is considered one of the most strenuous stretches of your Trolltunga hike. Gradually the impressive view opens up.

A grassy valley Yet another steep incline brings you up to Trombeskar pass and a beautiful grassy valley that is popular with campers. The trail hugs the shore of one small lake, before you have a slight but rather welcome descent to Store Floren. You will soon see a stunning view of Ringedalsvatnet, the lake in the valley that is now far below. This viewpoint is the perfect place for another break and a snack, and perhaps it’s time to fill your water bottle from one of the nearby streams.

Memories of horses… The trail to Trolltunga is part of an ancient thoroughfare between western and eastern Norway, across the Hardangervidda plateau. The Store Floren name indicates that farmers used this area as a summer pasture for their livestock. You may also see remnants of the old stables. When the hydropower facilities were built in Tyssedal and the mountains above in the early 1900s, horses were used to transport materials and to assist with the heavy construction work.

At Store Floren there is an emergency shelter. In case of a sudden storm or other emergency, it contains sleeping bags and blankets and food rations.

Snow in June Having reached the mountain plateau, an altitude of 900 metres or so, the terrain ahead is relatively flat – but it’s still rough enough for the trail to have lots of ups and downs. However, the major climbs are now behind you.

Even late in June you may encounter patches of snow, and you may have to cross some meltwater streams – fortunately there are good bridges over every one of them. There is also a waterfall up here.

Your hike continues via Hestaflåene (a place where horses grazed). Be sure to use the bridges to cross Endåen and the other riverbeds, regardless of whether they are dry. It is important that you stay on the trail in order to prevent erosion; the alpine vegetation is exceptionally fragile!

There is a second emergency shelter at Endåen.

Memories of a waterfall… The trail again climbs steeply, up to Endanuten. A little further along the trail, at Tyssehøl, you cross a riverbed that once carried water to Tyssestrengene. This twin waterfall was Norway’s highest and one of the most magnificent falls in Europe, with a total height of 646 metres and a 312-metre free fall. In the 19th century it was one of the country’s premier tourist attractions. But in 1967, the waters were diverted to Tysso II, a hydropower plant built deep inside the mountain in Skjeggedal. You also pass a dam – and surprisingly there is also a fine beach up here. From this dam, water is now led into tunnels and speeds down to the turbines of the power plant.

Stay back from the edge! A little farther ahead, as the trail narrows, you should be very mindful of the high drop. Suddenly the Trolltunga comes into view!

Perched 700 metres above Ringedalsvatnet lake, it truly is one of the most impressive rock formations in the world. There is likely to be a queue to climb down onto Trolltunga itself – and to partake in the magnificent photo-op. Unless you have hiked with friends, just ask someone nearby to take your photo, and offer to take theirs.

There is often a queue at Trolltunga between 12 am and 3 pm. In 2021, tourists had to wait 5-10 minutes on weekdays and 20-25 minutes on Saturdays. It is usually most people on Saturdays or the first day with nice weather. Photo: Scott Sporleder/Matador Network/Visit Hardangerfjord

Four iron rebar steps make it easy to climb down onto Trolltunga. Enjoy the break from your long hike, rehydrate with water or whatever beverage you brought, and eat your snack or lunch. And get to know your fellow hikers. They may have good tips about other nearby attractions, and interesting stories to tell.

Always stay at least a couple of feet back from the edge of the cliff. Needless to say, a fall would be fatal.

You can also have someone take a photo of you with Trolltunga in the background. The perfect moment is when someone has just left the outcrop and Trolltunga is empty. Photo: Åse Marie Evjen

Be mindful on your return hike! Your return hike will take less time. But make sure you start early enough to make it down before darkness , and stay on the trail. In rain, the wet rock can be slippery. Stay focused even though you may be tired.

How long does it take to hike to Trolltunga?

From the main trailhead at P2 in Skjeggedal, the round-trip hike is 27 km with an ascent of almost 800 metres. The estimated hiking time is 8–12 hours.

There is an additional trailhead at P3 Mågelitopp. The round-trip hike from P3 Mågelitopp is 20 km with an ascent of about 320 metres. The estimated hiking time is 7–10 hours.

How is the trail to Trolltunga?

The trail is solid and good. Signs along the trail show the remaining distance to both Trolltunga and back to the trailhead. In the months of June – September, experienced hikers can go on their own.

How difficult is the Trolltunga hike?

In Norway and internationally, hikes are rated according to their degree of difficulty: Easy, Medium, Challenging or Expert . Trolltunga – one of Norway’s most popular attractions!

trolltunga winter tour

Trolltunga is the most impressive rock formation in Norway. Our numbers speak for themselves. In less than a decade, the annual number of visitors has increased from less than a thousand to more than 80,000 hikers per year. Due to Covid-19, the number of visitors was reduced to 36 500 in 2020 and 50 000 in 2021. 79 000 hiked to Trolltunga in 2023. If you dream of a Trolltunga hike, this is the perfect year to visit Trolltunga!

Many Trolltunga adventure options

Choose between these main options for visiting the magnificent Trolltunga:

Hike the Trolltunga Trail

Most people choose a one-day hike, starting from P2 Skjeggedal or P3 Mågelitopp. In the months June–September, experienced hikers can hike on their own.

A guided Trolltunga day hike

We strongly recommend hiking the Trolltunga Trail with a guide , especially for people with limited mountain hiking experience. Your guide will keep you safe and really enrich your Trolltunga experience!

The Trolltunga Via Ferrata

Are you yearning for a more challenging and exciting adventure? Then Trolltunga Via Ferrata is perfect for you! We climb the 250–metre Via Ferrata route, before walking the final 3 km to Trolltunga. Our return is a hike down the Trolltunga Trail.

If you wish, the Trolltunga Via Ferrata may be combined with a night on the mountain.

Guided hike – and a night on the mountain

Trolltunga Active and Trolltunga Adventures both offer a guided Trolltunga hike with an overnight stay at their comfortable camp. It’s a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the mountain experience, hear your guides share their knowledge and tell stories around the campfire, and enjoy tasty traditional food!

Trolltunga Sunset-Sunrise for Experienced Hikers

The popular Sunset-Sunrise Hike is available for experienced hikers without a guide . This is perfect if you wish to hike the Trolltunga Trail on your own, and stay overnight in a prepared camp close to Trolltunga, without having to carry any camping gear.

Camping on your own

You may wish to slow your pace and savour your mountain experience. Please read and follow our guidelines for camping on the mountain . Pitch your tent only in the areas allowed – and leave no trace of your stay.

Carrying all the equipment you need can be rather heavy. If you choose a guided hike with an overnight stay, everything including food is provided for you.
