Mattia Cattaneo (ITA) Josef Cerny (CZE) Remco Evenepoel (BEL) Mikkel Honoré (DEN) Fabio Jakobsen (NED) Yves Lampaert (BEL) Michael Mørkøv (DEN)

- Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl sports director Tom Steels: "Looking at the team for Valencia, we can definitely get some chances, especially with Fabio, as some of the stages should end in a bunch sprint. But also with Remco, Mikkel and Mattia we can do something nice. The route is a demanding one, with two hard uphill finishes; one of these has a few kilometers of gravel roads, which will make things even more difficult. We would like to get a stage victory and, if possible, do a good general classification. But the race is tough and we know it won’t be easy."

Preview Tour of Valencia 2024 | Cycling's giants face off on familiar roads!

F rom Oceania to Europe: the cycling season has already started with the Tour Down Under and a series of one-day races, but in the first week of February, things really kick off on multiple fronts. In Spain, the Tour of Valencia is held, a race that traditionally attracts quite a few top riders. Join IDLProCycling.com for an in-depth look!

In 2016, the Tour of Valencia was redesigned, and in its eight editions since, we've seen as many world-class cyclists emerge as winners. From Wout Poels to Tadej Pogacar, and from Alejandro Valverde to last year's winner Rui Costa, they all made their mark on the Spanish roads. The Portuguese rider edged out Giulio Ciccone and Tao Geoghegan Hart for the top podium spots.

For a large part of the peloton, Valencia is a comfortable place, being the province where many cycling teams also organize their winter training camps. Many of the roads that the riders will travel this week are already familiar to the peloton.

Tour of Valencia 2024: Route, favorites for stage wins, and times

Stage 1, wednesday, jan. 31, 2024: benicassim - castellón (167 km).

This year, the Tour of Valencia kicks off in Benicassim, a frequent training camp location for Alpecin-Deceuninck. It won't be an easy start, as the route includes several significant climbs. The toughest climb, Desert de les Palmes, which is 7.7 kilometers long with an average gradient of 5.1 percent, is located about fifteen kilometers from the finish line.

56.0 km: La Bandereta (12.3 km at 3.7%)

78.0 km: Col de la Bassa (3.7 km at 4.4%)

149.0 km: Desert de les Palmes (7.7 km at 5.1%)

Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious)

Aleksandr Vlasov ( BORA-hansgrohe)

Michael Matthews (Jayco AlUla)

Start: 12:11 p.m.

Finish: 4:15 p.m.

Stage 2, Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024: Canals - Mancom de la Valldigna (162.7 km)

The second stage is one for the adventurous. While not extremely challenging, it's tricky enough to make life difficult for pure sprinters. The top of the last climb, Alto Pla de Corrals, is situated within the final ten kilometers. This five-kilometer ascent with a 3.9 percent gradient could prove to be a giant-killer if the pace is pushed hard.

13.5 km: Alto de Genoves (2.9 km at 5.2%)

82.5 km: La Drova (3.4 km at 6.5%)

152.5 km: Alto Pla de Corrals (5 km at 3.9%)

Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious)

Alessandro Covi (UAE-Team Emirates)

Start: 12:23 pm

Finish: 4:15 pm

Stage 3, Friday, Feb. 2, 2024: San Vicente del Raspeig - Orihuela (161.3 km)

On day three, the sprinters are likely to take center stage. The 161-kilometer route includes one significant climb, the Puerto de Albatera, but it's something that the world's better cyclists typically handle without much trouble.

73.0 km: Puerta de Albatera (4.5 km at 7.2%)

Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek)

Arne Marit (Intermarché-Wanty)

Orluis Aular (Caja Rural)

Start: 12:30 p.m.

Stage 4, Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024: Teulada Moraira - Vall d'Ebo (175.2 km)

In the penultimate stage, things are set to be thoroughly shaken up. Starting from Teulada Moraira and finishing in Vall d'Ebo, the riders will have to conquer several challenging climbs, each steeper than the last. This begins in the final twenty kilometers with the brutally steep Alto de Miserat, followed by several more tough climbs before the decisive moment on Vall d'Ebo, where the last two kilometers also feature a significant uphill.

46.5 km: Benimantell (5.4 km at 7%)

61.5 km: Confrides (7.6 km at 4.5%)

82.5 km: Alto de la Cabana (5.0 km at 3.9%)

105.5 km: Tolos (4.5 km at 4.9%)

159.0 km: Alto del Miserat (5.7 km at 9.2%)

Pavel Sivakov (UAE-Team Emirates)

Aleksandr Vlasov (BORA-hansgrohe)

Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious)

Start: 12:46 p.m.

Finish: 5:15 p.m.

Stage 5, Sunday, February 4, 2024: Betera - Valencia (93 km)

The tour concludes with a 93-kilometer stage to the city of Valencia, but it's far from a simple criterium. Along the way, riders must tackle two serious climbs: the Oronet and, notably, La Frontera (5 km at 9.3%). This could keep the race suspenseful right up to the final kilometers.

25.0 km: Oronet (4.9 km at 4.2%)

48.0 km: La Frontera (5 km at 9.3%)

Favorites Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious)

Patrick Konrad (Lidl-Trek)

Lennard Kämna (BORA-hansgrohe)

Start: 3:05 p.m.

Favorites for the general classification of the Tour of Valencia 2024

Note: The participant list is not yet complete and/or officially confirmed. Therefore, adjustments may still be made.

The big WorldTour teams are heading to Valencia with strong line-ups, that much is clear. Teams like BORA-hansgrohe, UAE-Team Emirates, Bahrain Victorious, Lidl-Trek, and Jayco AlUla, each with multiple riders aiming for the general classification, are expected to play a significant role in shaping the race in the Valencia region.

Aleksandr Vlasov , who was in top form last week in Mallorca and won this race two years ago, is backed by a strong team including Jai Hindley and Lennard Kämna, making him a top favorite for this stage race. In the Balearic Islands, he finished on the podium three times, but a win eluded him. Will this change in Valencia?

Not if UAE-Team Emirates has anything to say about it. They have Brandon McNulty, who's in a similar position to Vlasov post-Mallorca, but they're also bringing Pavel Sivakov , Felix Grossschartner , and Jay Vine , adding three more strong riders to the mix. Sivakov, in particular, will be looking to make a mark in his first race for the Emirati team. And that’s not even mentioning young talents Igor Arrietta and Jan Christen...

At Bahrain Victorious, daredevils Pello Bilbao and Matej Mohoric , two daredevils, are strong contenders for the numerous downhill finishes in this race, while Santiago Buitrago, a dynamic climber, will likely have his eyes on the queen stage. A formidable team that the competition should definitely watch out for.

Jayco AlUla, with Eddie Dunbar , Filippo Zana , and stage hunter Michael Matthews , also presents a strong lineup on paper, as does Lidl-Trek with sprinter Jonathan Milan and GC riders Patrick Konrad and Sam Oomen. Movistar is banking on Pelayo Sanchez, Antonio Pedrero, Einer Rubio , and Spanish champion Oier Lazkano.

Who are the favorites for the general classification of the 2024 Tour of Valencia, according to IDLProCycling.com?

Top favorites: Aleksandr Vlasov (BORA-hansgrohe) and Pavel Sivakov (UAE-Team Emirates)

Outsiders: Brandon McNulty (UAE-Team Emirates), Eddie Dunbar (Jayco AlUla), Santiago Buitrago and Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious)

Long shots: Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), Jai Hindley, Lennard Kämna (BORA-hansgrohe), Patrick Konrad (Lidl-Trek), Jay Vine, Felix Grossschartner (UAE-Team Emirates), Filippo Zana (Jayco AlUla) and Einer Rubio (Movistar)

La Vuelta Femenina 2024: Route, How to Watch, and Favorites

Demi Vollering, Kasia Niewiadoma, and Gaia Realini will battle for the red jersey on the challenging eight-stage tour across Spain.

9th la vuelta femenina 2023 stage 5

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. How we test gear.

As of this Sunday, April 29, we’re officially in Grand Tour season, as the eight-stage Vuelta Femenina kicks off with a 16-kilometer team time trial in Valencia, Spain.

9th la vuelta femenina 2023 stage 7

Last year’s race covered just over 740 kilometers over the course of its seven stages. It was won by Movistar’s Annemiek van Vleuten , who, with the win, became the first woman to win all three of the major women’s stage races (the Vuelta, along with the Tour de France Femmes, and the Giro Donne). She beat SD Worx’s Demi Vollering but just nine seconds. Trek-Segafredo’s Gaia Realini rounded out the podium in third.

But van Vleuten retired after last season, meaning there’s no chance for a repeat winner. And given the variety of winners we’ve seen in the women’s peloton this spring, this race is truly up for grabs.

This year’s race adds a stage, making it eight in total. All of them stick exclusively to Spain’s northwest and northcentral regions.

It kicks off with what should be a blistering team time trial over 16 lake-flat kilometers. From there, the second stage will take riders from Buñol to Moncofa over 118 hilly kilometers, including just one Category 3 climb. As that climb comes 40 kilometers from the finish, expect a bunch sprint.

The third stage is a 131-kilometer medium mountain stage that will take riders from Lucena to Teruel and feature another Category 3 ascent. Stage four covers 142 kilometers from Molina de Aragón to Zaragoza and is mostly downhill from start to finish.

The 113 kilometers of stage 5 are where the peloton first gets into proper mountains, with a pair of category 2 climbs—one of which provides the day’s summit finish—on the menu. Stage 6 is the opposite of stage 4, taking riders on a daylong gradual uphill from Tarazona to Laguna Negra, ending with a category 1 summit finish that very well could determine the race’s overall winner.

Stage 7 could be the last chance for the sprinters to leave their mark. However, the final 500 meters of the day’s 126 kilometers ramp up to 10%, so look for a punchier rider to take the win there.

The Vuelta Feminina will end with an 89-kilometer ride from Distrito Telefónca to ValdesquíMadrid. The ride features a pair of category-1 climbs, the last of which leads to the race’s final finish line.

Complete information on each stage can be found here .

How to Watch

The Vuelta Feminina will be broadcast in the US via Peacock , which costs $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year. In Canada, the race will be broadcast via FloSports , which costs $12.50 per month or $150 per year.

Riders to Watch

While the final roster for the race is yet to be final, several confirmed names promise another competitive edition. Among the riders targeting the general classification are Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift champion Demi Vollering of SD Worx-Protime, Gaia Realini of Lidl-Trek, who graced the podium last year, and the consistently impressive Kasia Niewiadoma of SD Worx-Protime. With the absence of retired defending champion Anemiek Van Vleuten and Vollering showing signs of wavering form this season, the battle for the coveted red jersey appears wide open.

Other riders to watch are the 2024 Tour of Flanders champion Elisa Longo Borghini of Lidl-Trek, Canyon//SRAM’s Ricarda Bauernfeind , and Mavi García of Liv Alula Jayco.
