Today is Earth Day 2024 🌍🌿 Today, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting the environment and ensuring a healthier future for all life on Earth. At Wild Adventures Melbourne (WAM), we take direct action to support the places, wildlife, and communities where we operate with a long-term vision for future generations. It goes way beyond simple statements and promises. During a recent eco adventure hosting a private group from @shesups_ , dolphins joined us as we were Stand-Up Paddleboarding the beautiful Mornington Peninsula coastline. Just a few minutes before the dolphins joined us, we were picking up plastic bottles and cans from a nearby beach. WAM carries portable bins on our outdoor activities with an aim to leave every place we visit cleaner than we found it. Any bottles and cans we find from beaches, oceans and foreshores, we take to the local container deposit scheme and use the funds generated to donate to the @dolphinresearch . We are also supporting a shellfish reef restoration project near where we saw the dolphins with @nature_aus . This project is regenerating entire ecosystems and ultimately can help provide a healthier environment for the dolphins of Nerm (Port Phillip Bay). So when a dolphin pops up to say hello as we SUP, and we encounter these incredible creatures up close, we want to be able to look those dolphins in the eye, safe in the knowledge WAM is taking action in multiple ways to help protect them and their environment (and yet still strive to do more). At WAM, having a positive environmental and social impact is embedded in every decision and action we make, not just today, but every day. #EarthDay2024 #sustainability #regenerativetourism #environmentalimpact #wildlifeconservation #protectouroceans @earthdaynetwork #morningtonpeninsula ...

Looking to do something this Aussie winter that’s adventurous, relaxing and bloody incredible scenery throughout? Below is a Google review left by one of guests who joined WAM’s Great Alpine & Lakes Adventure last year, click link in bio to find out more about the trip and to book. “We just got back from the Great Alpine & Lakes Adventure and it was amazing! Nic has a real passion for hosting people and went above and beyond to make sure we had a good time. We spent 2 nights at a cosy cabin in Dinner Plain near Mt Hotham where we got to enjoy our first Australian skiing experience which greatly exceeded expectations. Plus an unforgettable fondue dinner at a hidden little lodge hosted by a lovely Frenchman. We then continued the drive south and spent 2 nights at a lakeside house overlooking the Gippsland Lakes where Nic took us kayaking on the lake before spending our final evening at the luxurious and picturesque Metung Hot Springs where we got to bathe in numerous naturally heated tubs and pools. The 4 night adventure was the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation, I highly recommend giving it a go when winter comes back around!” ...

Take it from us (and our guests), wildlife encounters are even more special and memorable when you are venturing out on an active adventure. On this SUP adventure a few weeks ago we met this snoozing Australian Fur Seal, had dolphins come and say hi, and saw loads of rays. WAM offers minimal impact human powered activities like stand up paddleboarding, bushwalking, snorkelling, wildlife watching. No engines, no motors, just our small groups of 9 people max having awesome and non-intrusive interactions with iconic native animals. 🦭 🦘 🐬 🐨 🦅 🐋 🦔 🦜 🐢 #morningtonpeninsula #wildlife #marinelife #seeaustralia #visitmelbourne #everybitdifferent #drivevictoria #ecotourism #australianfurseals #positiveimpacttourism #standuppaddleboarding ...

A few years ago I was watching a film/documentary called '2040' which explores what the future could look like by the year 2040 if we simply embraced the best solutions already available to us to improve our planet and shifted them rapidly into the mainstream. One of the points raised in the film that really struck a cord was that more girls completing education is crucial for fighting climate change. It made me wonder if there was a program here in Australia that WAM could donate to which supported Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls and young women through education. This led to connecting with the @starsfoundationaustralia who run programs to improve health, education and employment outcomes for First Nations girls and young women across Australia. Coincidentally it turned out that the executive director of the Stars Foundation had spoken at the premier of the 2040 film about the power of women completing education as part of the solution to climate change. To cut a long story short, fast forward a few years and WAM is committed to supporting the Stars Foundation, and i'm proud to say in 2022-23 we funded one school year of education for a Stars Foundation female student based here in Victoria. Bringing things full circle, last week I was fortunate enough to meet Damon Gameau the director of 2040, and was able to thank him for the inspiration through his film making. WAM is committed to supporting the Stars Foundation for years to come as part of our WAM 4 Project and 2030 goals which you can learn more about on our website. ...

We’re extremely proud to announce that Wild Adventures Melbourne (WAM) has been chosen as a finalist in the 35th National Banksia Sustainability Awards, regarded as the most prestigious sustainability Awards in Australia and longest-running Sustainability Awards in the world. WAM is a finalist in the Sustainable tourism award category which recognises outstanding businesses in the tourism industry that prioritise environmental conservation and have demonstrated a commitment to minimising their ecological footprint, promoting responsible travel and visitor education, supporting local communities, and preserving natural and cultural heritage. As a micro-tourism owner-operator business, WAM doesn't enter many awards due to limited resources. So being recognised as a finalist in these national awards makes it even more special and gives us confidence our unique progressive approach to positive impact tourism has the potential to help transform the industry into a force for good. @banksiafdn @australia @officialmorningtonpeninsula @visitmelbourne ...

89 Highly Awesome Outdoor Melbourne Adventures to Try

Melburnian adventurers, this one's for you. Over the last little while, we've been going on about pristine waterfalls right outside the city , we've given you the keys to secret gardens around town , and we've sent you valiantly exploring on Melbourne's very best walks .

Haven't done it all? Haven't  kind of sort of gone camping ? Haven't elegantly dog paddled with your dog at a nearby pooch-friendly beach ? Yet to take your ol' trusty two-wheeler on the city's best bike trails ? Fill up your canteen with water ( wink ), pack a little lunchbox and get going this weekend. Here's a little guide to help you.

The Ten Best Swimming Holes Near Melbourne for 2033

Work on your cannonballs

With the weather heating up, there’s nothing better than stripping down to your togs, baring your skin to the glaring summer rays and cannon-balling into a swimming hole. The trick is finding the ones without the gaggles of sunburnt tourists. Luckily, we’ve done the research. Grab your Kmart-inflatables and get ready to practice the art of floating. Here are our picks of the ten most unusual swimming spots around Melbourne – be they waterfall, beach haven or billabong.

Start creating a personalised itinerary — or add to an existing list. Save it, share it and take it with you on your next local adventure.

The Ten Best Secret Gardens Around Melbourne

Find a little hideaway

Beyond the freeway, hidden behind that thick shrub, off that back street — that’s where a secret garden is waiting. With no shortage of blissful spring days on the horizon, there’s no better time to be a little adventurous and explore one of these lesser known gardens. Why wouldn’t you want to swap the cement jungle for a green oasis and breathe in the heavenly scent of eucalyptus trees? Sit back, slip off your shoes, feel the grass between your toes and chase a frisbee around one of these top secret spots.

The Best Waterfalls You Can Swim Under Near Melbourne

The Best Waterfalls You Can Swim Under Near Melbourne

Go chasing waterfalls

There are all the standard ways to keep refreshed. A dip at the local pool is always a solid option , as is a tumble down a slip ‘n’ slide . Or you can stick your head in the fridge. (Just whatever you do, stay out of the Yarra.) For those of you feeling a little more adventurous, we recommend a swim beneath one of Victoria’s many beautiful waterfalls. Here are four such locations within a reasonable drive of the city. Watch out for the currents and the leeches, and you’ll have a picture-perfect time.

The Best Places to Go Glamping in Victoria

The Best Places to Go Glamping in Victoria

Go camping (kinda)

Camping is a wonderful idea — reconnecting with nature, breathing in the ambience of peace and quiet and the fresh non-city air. It’s the perfect escape from the urban jungle of life. But the logistics of camping are difficult. Packing all that stuff, unpacking that stuff, erecting the tent and praying that the thin synthetic material is enough to protect you from an impending storm or the swarming mosquitoes out to get your blood.  Thankfully glamping, the luxurious older sister of that other activity, provides a classy alternative to simply roughing it outdoors. Combining both the beauty of nature with the mod cons and comfort of a hotel means you can have your wilderness experience and goose-feather down quilt too.

Ten of the Best Walks in and Around Melbourne

Ten of the Best Walks in and Around Melbourne

Go for a stroll

Despite popular belief, walking is not just an activity reserved from getting from A to B (i.e. your house to the tram stop), but a delightful way to spend a leisurely Sunday afternoon. Whether you’re looking for a walking track to sculpt killer calves, or a more Zen-like English garden stroll, Melbourne has hundreds of trails dedicated to the ancient practice of putting one foot in front of the other. So lace up your runners and feel the dirt underneath your feet with the best walks in and around the city.

The Ten Best Lighthouses To Visit Near Melbourne

The Ten Best Lighthouses To Visit Near Melbourne

Go Round the Twist

Lighthouses have been the guiding beacon of lonely seas for centuries. Although nowadays we are blessed with GPS technology and automated glowing lights, these romantic towers guided fisherman, shabby sailors and new migrants safely to the rocky shores around Melbourne, a city which was then only just finding its feet.  Visiting and climbing the steep spiralling staircases of these historical lighthouses is a romantic and windy experience that is best combined with a picnic or some quality local fish and chips on the lookout or a nearby beach.

The Ten Best Bike Rides In and Around Melbourne

The Ten Best Bike Rides In and Around Melbourne

Get pedallin'

With the warm afternoons, long evenings and those sunsets, now is the best time to reunite with your two-wheeled friend and power through on the pedals. Whether you want to ride across town, whiz downhill, or simply take it slow and meander leisurely through suburban parks and gardens, there’s surely a bike track that can lure you back into the saddle. So gear up for a Sunday afternoon ride — or a sweaty Saturday morning calve-defining workout — because Melbourne has plenty of bike trails that will get you wheeling all around the city and the suburbs.

The Ten Best Picnic Spots in Melbourne - OLD

The Ten Best Picnic Spots in Melbourne - OLD

Pack a little lunch

Nothing beats getting together with a few mates for a leisurely afternoon in the sun. And while the weather doesn’t always want to cooperate here in Melbourne, we’ve got no shortage of comfortable picnic spots for when it does. Grab yourself a rug, a basket, a Frisbee if you’re feeling energetic, and without further ado, set up camp at one of our ten favourite spots around (and just outside of) the city.

Melbourne's Best Dog-Friendly Parks and Beaches for the Ultimate Pup Time

Melbourne's Best Dog-Friendly Parks and Beaches for the Ultimate Pup Time

Take Scruffy on an excursion

Just like you, your four-legged friend enjoys escaping the daily grind — that is, running laps of the backyard (or your apartment). They need to have adventures, feel the earth under their paws and happily frolic, roll and chase after balls, seagulls and unassuming strangers. They need to experience new surrounds and — if they’re lucky — socialise with other dogs. But where can one’s pooch experience this kind of freedom only an off-leash area can provide? Luckily, there are a plethora of dog parks (and beaches!) in Melbourne that will welcome you and your fur-baby with open arms. And if you’re merely an unashamed, dog-less puppy pervert, that’s okay too. These spots are prime for pup-watching — and you might even get to snuggle a couple if it’s okay with the poochies and their owners. Or, you could simply borrow a pup for the day .

The Best Outdoor Swimming Pools in Melbourne

The Best Outdoor Swimming Pools in Melbourne

Do laps in the sunshine

The words ‘public pool’ usually evoke a montage of manky images collected over time from forced school swimming lessons and carnivals. Bandaids bobbing gently to and fro along the pool floor, fears of foot fungi if you forgot your thongs, freaking out when a naked older woman asks you to help with the clasp of her bra in the change rooms — gross public pool experiences are basically a right of passage for primary school kids. But now you are an adult, it doesn’t have to be this way! There is actually a whole luxurious world of publicly accessible swimming pools just waiting for you to glide into their cool, blue waters.

Melbourne travel FAQs

Can i drink the water in australia.

Drinking water from taps in Australia is considered safe, unless otherwise marked. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water.

What is ATM access like in Australia?

ATMs are commonly found in large cities and regional towns in Australia. ATM access will be very limited in remote areas so be aware of this before heading into national parks or the Outback.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Australia?

Credit cards are widely accepted by shops, restaurants and cafes in Australia. Smaller establishments may only accept cash or require a minimum purchase for credit card use, so be sure to carry enough cash for smaller purchases.

What are the toilets like in Australia?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in Australia, and many of our campsites have proper facilities with flushing toilets. In remote areas such as the Kimberley, there is no established plumbing and therefore we have installed ‘drop toilets’. Some campsites we use are managed by the National Parks and have either eco-toilets or drop toilets, most of which are maintained regularly.

What is the internet access like in Australia?

Internet access is widely available in most parts of Australia, with internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots commonly found in urban areas. Please note that internet access won’t be available in Outback and remote areas.

Is tipping customary in Australia?

Tipping isn’t mandatory in Australia; however, rounding up the bill or leaving spare change is common practice. Restaurant staff, taxi drivers and other service workers welcome tips for good service.

Bear Grylls

Time Out says

Unleash your inner daredevil when the world-famous adventurer comes to Melbourne for one night only

If you've been wanting some more adventure in your life, here's the perfect inspiration. Bear Grylls – the globally-renowned adventurer, award-winning TV host and author – will return to Melbourne in January 2025, with a show named after his life motto: “courage, kindness . . . and never give up!”

The Never Give Up tour will pop up in Melbourne for one night only on Tuesday, January 28 – and it’s set to be a pretty darn inspiring evening.

After finding fame as one of the youngest people to climb Mount Everest at age 23, only  18 months after breaking his back in a parachuting accident , Grylls has gone on to become one of the most well-known adventurers in the world.

The real-life action man will be starting his Aussie tour in Perth on January 23, before heading to Melbourne, then Sydney on January 29 and Brisbane on February 1. Grylls will be appearing on stage at  the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre for his event in our city.

“I’m really proud to be bringing my live show to theatres across Australia in January. The clear goal is to encourage that spirit of adventure in us, all of us. This tour feels like the right moment to be doing this, where we need to foster the spirit of courage, kindness and never giving up in all of us,”   said Grylls.

Pre-sale for tickets has already begun, and general sale starts on Thursday, May 9 from 10am. Tickets start at $89 per person, and you can score yours over   here .
