Internships in Jamaica

One of the most beautiful and developed islands in the Caribbean, Jamaica offers a world of contrasts. While its cities are on the road to modernity and development, its rural areas are still extremely impoverished and some lack even basic resources. If you’re looking for an experience in the same timezone as the U.S. (no jet lag!), beautiful beaches, and a view into the world of poor vs. rich that is evident throughout the Caribbean, look no farther than internships in Jamaica. This country is known for its pristine coastlines, blue seas, and enticing sunsets. However, beyond this is a country of relaxed, welcoming people, smiling children, and lush mountains that are a must see.

Located on the southeastern coast of Jamaica, sitting in an amazing natural harbor, lies the largest city in the country, Kingston . Here in the capital city, interns can find a plethora of great internship placements. Those who intern in Kingston will most likely stay in a shared apartment or with a host family, where they will have access to a larger variety of restaurants and shops than those who intern in other locations throughout Jamaica. The key to a happy internship in Kingston is to go where the locals go, and of course have a great time!

The town of Mandeville is located about 100 kilometers west of Kingston and interns will be pleasantly surprised by its somewhat cooler climate, since it is situated at about 2000 feet. Those who intern in Mandeville can expect to work with organizations and on projects that focus on developing and assisting poor communities. One of the most common internships in Mandeville is working on literacy programs; by helping children and older students improve their level of literacy interns will help them to continue and advance their education.

Right next to the city of Manchester, or about a forty-five minute drive from Mandeville, is the parish of St. Elizabeth . Upon arrival, interns will be surprised, in a good way, by its pristine and rustic aura. Internships in St. Elizabeth are most often located in the areas of Black River, Accompong, and Santa Cruz.

Additionally, as honorable mentions, there are some amazing internships in Jamaica at Montego Bay , Negril , and Ocho Rios as well.

Most individuals who intern abroad in Jamaica will have the opportunity to travel around the country, both on the weekends or after their internship is over. One of the most popular trips is to the Milk River Bath, where a natural hot spring is renowned for its healing powers, and it is a great way to spend the day after a busy week at your internship in Jamaica.

There are many different types of available internships in Jamaica, but applicants should keep in mind that most revolve around development and the humanities , with placements ranging from community development to media work to medicine and agriculture.

Make sure to keep in mind that if you do choose to intern in Jamaica, your experience may be more along the lines of what a volunteer would experience as opposed to a stereotypical European internship. However, there are most definitely a couple of very exciting placements that will assuage any worries about not having the stereotypical intern abroad experience.

Community Development. One of the more exciting internships in Jamaica is projects revolving around community development. Development interns may help out at reading camps in the summer, lead workshops on girl's empowerment, or help build new classrooms for local schools. There are also additional features of community development internships in Jamaica that allows interns to learn more about the history, culture, and society of the island.

Agriculture . For those with more of a farming or agriculture interest, there are internships available that allow interns to work on family farms in northern Jamaica. Agriculture internships in Jamaica allow interns to truly experience a Rasta lifestyle that is caring, organic, vegetarian, and natural. These family farms are homes to incredibly healthy forms of living, through organic farming, homeschooling, herbal medicine, heirloom seed growing and distribution, and use of tropical essential oils. Interns may also get the chance to help with mushroom growing, soap making, and beekeeping. The overarching goal of agricultural internships in Jamaica is to promote sustainable living while also positively impacting the community and the environment.

Medicine . If you are a trained nurse, midwife, doctor, or veterinarian, or even still in school for it, you can intern in Jamaica in a variety of medical placements. Those in school will be able to gain invaluable experience as an intern in Jamaica, and professionals will be able to make incredible contributions to local communities by sharing their skills and expertise.

Journalism . Finally, individuals have the chance to intern in Jamaica in the field of journalism and media , contributing to print, radio, or television journalism. Interns will have an opportunity to create a portfolio of work while gaining broadcasting experience and skills along the way.

Generally speaking, internships in Jamaica can start on any day, because most organizations allow interns to specify their preferred start and end dates and have interns arriving throughout the year.

Most internships in Jamaica are unpaid and require a program fee that ranges from $2000 to $7000. Even though the program fee might seem a little pricey, once you get to Jamaica, as long as you’re smart about your budget, you can still spend only a minimal amount on a daily basis. An inexpensive meal costs about $5 and a coke is a usually $1. Just make sure to steer clear of the higher end restaurants and resorts and you can easily save your bank account from too many negative numbers during your internship in Jamaica.

Most individuals who intern in Jamaica live with a Jamaican host family. While this may seem a little out of the ordinary, Jamaican families can provide you with the very best hospitality and the perfect way to integrate into Jamaican society and culture. Host families normally speak both English and Patois, which is the local creole dialect. Some host families take more than one intern at a time, and interns are generally placed with host families based on location, so they can have easy access to their placement.

In terms of visas for interning in Jamaica, to put it simply, it depends. For many destinations, interns will have to buy a visa before traveling. Sometimes a visa can be bought at the port of entry into Jamaica. Visas can cost anywhere from $30 to $400. Just make sure to check with your internship placement provider about what is required and they will assist you with the process.

Sights to See. One of the main benefits of interning in Jamaica is the relaxed work schedule which allows for a plethora of travel opportunities. The Blue Mountains, YS Falls, Dunn’s River Falls, the Bob Marley Museum, Outameni Experience, and Treasure Beach are all destinations within an easy trip from your work placement, regardless of where you intern in Jamaica.

Beaches. There are an incredible amount of pristine beaches, like Ocho Rios, Negril, Montego Bay, and Port Antonio. If you’re an adventurous soul, water sports such as diving and scuba diving are popular all around Jamaica, but if you just want to relax you can set up a hammock and chill to your heart’s content.

Reggae. Finally, internships in Jamaica are not complete without some hardcore reggae chill sessions. Reminders of Bob Marley are everywhere and will never cease to permeate your internship in Jamaica.

Challenges. Jamaica’s capital in Kingston is rife with crime and extra precautions should be taken. Jamaica’s only other challenges that face interns are the hot climate, insects, and a general lack of comfort. But if you have an open mind there is nothing stopping you from having an experience of a lifetime interning in Jamaica!

Over 1,000 students employed under TEF Summer Internship Programme

tourism internships jamaica

More than 1,100 students gained employment under the 2023 Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) Summer Internship Programme.

Speaking during a media briefing on Thursday at Devon House in St Andrew, Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, said, “The Summer Internship Programme that TEF has been managing has reached a new high in 2023.”

Some 14,000 young persons registered using the online portal, of which more than 1,100 gained employment in 136 areas across Jamaica.

The programme took place over two cycles, with the first batch of interns working from June to mid-July.

The second batch started in late July and will end on August 25.

Headlines Delivered to Your Inbox

Bartlett informed that this year, the programme worked with the Hospitality and Tourism Management Programme, which involves more than 300 high-school students islandwide.

Among the list of employers that participated in the programme are all seven Sandals hotel properties, AC Hotel by Marriott Kingston, Golf View Hotel, Altamont Court Hotel, Marriott Courtyard, and the Grand Excelsior Hotel.

“The SIP is intended to help parents, guardians, and their young charges. Part of the whole programme is to assist young people who are in transition from high schools into tertiary institutions,” the Minister said.

He further informed that each student was paid a weekly stipend based on the category in which they fall.

Fifth-form students received up to $14,500, sixth-form students up to $16,500 while first and second-year college students received up to $18,000 and third-year students up to $20,500.

Participants were also offered the opportunity to complete the American Hotels and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) Customer Service Gold Professional Certification.

Meanwhile, TEF Executive Director, Dr Carey Wallace, thanked corporate Jamaica for their role in the programme, noting that without them providing the “actual internships” for the participants, the programme would not have been a success.

The TEF Summer Internship Programme, established in April 2007, is a significant initiative to provide young people with valuable work experience across various sectors.

Under the guidance of the Jamaica Centre for Tourism Innovation (JCTI), the programme partners with organisations in all 14 parishes.

Participants gain real-world experience over six weeks while receiving mentoring from professionals in the field.

Medical & Healthcare Internship Abroad

Healthcare internships abroad are a great way to learn about Jamaica and medical facilities.

A large number of the island’s population is living below the poverty line and struggle with low wages. Because of this, there is a high demand for ‘free’ health care, and doing a medical and healthcare internship abroad, you’ll have several opportunities to make an impact and build skills.

On any visit to a public hospital, clinic, or health center, you’ll see long lines of people waiting each day to access the health services. But with this challenge comes your opportunity to get exposure and valuable work experience.

By working with internships in healthcare, you’ll help relieve the burdens and stress faced daily by overworked healthcare providers. In addition to this, facilities are under-staffed with limited resources.

Above all, the skills you’ll build and the challenges you’ll encounter on your internships in healthcare will give you a strong foundation to launch your medical career.

Medicine and Healthcare placements are available in nursing homes, assisted living homes, and community care facilities.

However, doing healthcare internships abroad, your responsibilities will be entirely dependent on your previous level of training and experience. Because of this, interns/volunteers with higher qualifications will, therefore, receive more advanced work.

As a medical intern/volunteer, your responsibilities are entirely dependent on your previous level of training and experience. Because of this, interns/volunteers with higher qualifications will, therefore, receive more advanced work.

Pre-medical students will work in local clinics doing basic tasks such as:

  • Administration tasks
  • General health checks
  • Taking patients’ history
  • Raise awareness on important health topics like nutrition and personal hygiene

For doctors or nurses in training, depending on your level of experience and skills, you may be required to do various tasks such as:

  • Assisting the medical doctor on duty
  • Shadowing the doctors
  • Assist with procedures like giving injections and suturing wounds
  • Check-ups like checking blood pressure etc.
  • Help in maintaining medical records

Our internship programs are based on the outskirts of Kingston. Intern placements are within 15 to 30 minutes from Volunteer Home. The programs are also within close proximity to village shops, schools, and churches.

Interns will arrive at the Norman Manley International Airport and our representative will meet you on arrival.

A Jamaica Volunteer Programs coordinator will conduct orientation on the morning of the day the project starts. During this first meeting, you will be introduced to local staff who will take care of you and go over the details of your project placement. Your orientation will include popular Jamaican customs & culture, safety, weekend and free time travel options, and guidelines and expectations.

During your orientation, you will also be briefed on  information about all the Covid-19  protocols, options for local transportation, currency, and other support services you will require during your stay.

Our accommodations are dormitory-style volunteer houses. Rooms are equipped with fans, but there is an option to pay an additional charge for air conditioning. Dorms have bunk beds and volunteers will share rooms with others of the same sex.

All accommodations have electricity, running water, western-style bathrooms, and free Wi-Fi. You are required to bring your reusable water bottle to refill each day, which will help to reduce your cost for clean drinking water. You are also required to bring toiletries.

Solar panels heat up the water in our accommodation, so on days when it’s not sunny or raining, there may be a chill to your shower.

At JVP, breakfast and dinner from Monday – Friday is included in your package.

The breakfast menu includes toast, eggs, fruits, tea/coffee, and juice. Two days per week, you’ll have a full Jamaican breakfast. We have a communal kitchen at the volunteer house that consists of all the essentials, including an electric kettle, refrigerator, utensils, and microwave. There is also space in our cupboards to pack your snacks.

For breakfast and dinner on the weekends, you may use our communal kitchen at the volunteer accommodation with access to amenities like a gas stove, oven, kettles, microwave, and fridge. Alternatively, you can access nearby restaurants offering meals between $5-8.

We cater to all diets, including vegetarians and vegans. To request meals for your special diet, discuss with your project coordinator.

Your daily work schedule will depend on your location and the duties; however, all interns will work with a basic structure. Our projects run from Monday – Friday, and on the first day of your placement, you’ll be accompanied by a local staff who will introduce you and help you settle in. During this time, you will get to familiarize yourself with the facilities, the team, and the duties and activities you will be doing.

However, a typical weekday will look something like this:

6:30 – 7:30: Breakfast

8:00: Depart for internship work

  9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Start working at your project placement. You may be working as a tour guide at a popular destination or working closely with a hotel, villa, or guest house operator. Shadow your mentor and engage in your hospitality duties and responsibilities.

12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

At noon, there will be a break for lunch. This can be flexible and not necessarily taken at this time.

  1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Return to work at your placement.

For the best experience, our interns are required to be 18 and older, are encouraged to be flexible and open-minded. Creativity, initiative, and a sense of humor are also invaluable assets. Interns also need to submit important documentation such as travel health insurance,  trip cancellation , a resume/CV, a copy of your passport front page, and a criminal background check not older than six months.

The Jamaican Government has come up with a short term licensing process for interns and volunteers. It requires that you submit a short volunteer form, certified copies of basic degree certificates and current license (if applicable), two medical references, a work permit exemption application form, and two photographs. Your documentation requirements will vary depending on your qualifications, but for a full list of what you will need to submit, go here:  Requirements by Jamaican Government .

You can spend your afternoons and weekends however you’d like, whether it be hanging out with other volunteers, working online, or exploring Jamaica through adventure. At JVP, our representatives are always looking out for eye-opening cultural activities we know you’ll enjoy. Some afternoons you’ll even have the option to attend a local event. It’s your choice!
