Looking to get away for a weekend? Well, you’re in luck: there are so many incredible weekend getaways in the USA!

The more we travel in our home country, the more we appreciate how its enormous size and incredible diversity mean that city breaks in the United States can cover just about any interest.

Want to lay out on one of the best urban beaches in the world, drink craft beer, attend an unforgettable festival, go hiking, hit a casino, or simply experience some of the most iconic tourist sites in the world in quick succession?

No matter what you like to do, there’s an American city (or six) for that.

Here are 15 of the best cities for weekend getaways in the USA.

New Orleans

It’s often said that there’s nowhere like New Orleans–and that is completely true.

Spending a weekend in New Orleans ( or even a single day ) means lots of jazz, lots of delicious food (gumbo, beignets, po’ boys, muffulettas, and more–oh my!), and lots of good times.

Be sure to make time for a ghost tour to take a look at the more mystical part of the city (even if you’re not the superstitious type, I promise a ghost tour is worth it in NOLA!), and a bayou tour to check out southern Louisiana’s incredible landscape.

And, while it’s easy to have nothing but good times in New Orleans, you can (and arguably should) add more depth to your trip as well: consider a day trip out to somewhere like the Whitney Plantation to learn a bit about NOLA’s dark past, or even a Katrina-themed tour discussing the serious impacts of the 2005 hurricane.

Where to Stay in New Orleans

  • Best Western Plus French Quarter Landmark Hotel : The hotel itself is beautiful in that classic New Orleans way, and the (included) breakfast is varied and tasty. Best of all, this hotel is situated right on the edge of the French Quarter, meaning that all of the French Quarter and some areas beyond are within easy walking distance.
  • Omni Royal Orleans Hotel : Located in the heart of the French Quarter, this beautiful hotel is known for its gorgeous building, attentive service, and lovely ambiance–plus its ghosts. Yeah, that attentive service? It just may come in the form of the ghost maid who likes to tuck guests in at night!

Romantic Getaways in USA: Jackson Square New Orleans

If you’re hoping to soak up some fun in the sun during your USA weekend getaway, look no further than Miami.

South Beach is often considered one of the best urban beaches on the planet, and we’d have to agree!

Don’t limit yourself just to the beach, though: be sure to explore Miami Beach’s impressive Art Deco architecture, eat your way through Little Havana, admire street art in Wynwood, and check out the views from Biscayne Bay.

For those who want to experience some unique nature in south Florida during their trip, consider also planning a trip out to the Everglades–or if you have a few extra days, road-tripping your way all the way to Key West , the southernmost point in the USA!

Where to Stay in Miami

  • Hotel Impala : We love staying here! The room was clean, the shower divine, the customer service lovely, and–most importantly–the location on Collins Ave. was absolutely  perfect.  Located in the heart of the Art Deco district and a five-minute walk from South Beach while still offering a quiet place to sleep at night, Hotel Impala had a location you just can’t beat in Miami Beach.
  • The Marlin Hotel : This hotel offers the chance to stay in one of Miami Beach’s historic art deco buildings! Boasting a fantastic location on Collins Avenue, impeccable customer service, incredible reviews, and spacious suites, the Marlin Hotel is the perfect hotel for those looking for a luxury experience while also seeing a side of Miami Beach’s Art Deco history that not every visitor to the city gets to.

Dripping with Spanish moss and home to one of the most stunningly beautiful historic centers of any city in the United States, Savannah is the perfect place to head for a weekend trip : not too big, not too small, and positively packed with some of the best southern food you could ever hope to find.

Come here to wander through all 22 of Savannah’s remaining town squares, tour a house museum or two, pay a visit to Forsyth Park, and to wander along gorgeous Jones Street.

Shoppers will love all the boutiques on Broughton Street, River Street, and in City Market, and those looking to indulge their taste buds will find limitless incredible food in Savannah , from classic southern meals at the Olde Pink House to tasty ice cream at Leopold’s.

If you’re a former Girl Scout like me, or just interested in their history, be sure to also pay a visit to the home of the organization’s founder, Juliette Gordon Low.

Where to Stay in Savannah

  • The Marshall House : Featuring a popular included breakfast, a fantastic location in the heart of Savannah’s historic district, and phenomenal reviews, you can’t go wrong with a stay at The Marshall House!
  • Foley House Inn : Easily my favorite hotel that I’ve stayed in while in Savannah, the Foley House Inn is absolutely beautiful inside and out, and has a perfect location right on Chippewa Square.

The Best Things to Do in Savannah: Fountain in Square

Of all of the weekend getaways in the USA covered here, Asheville is one of the best options for a group divided on whether to visit a city or the great outdoors.

Home to an epic craft beer scene, the incredible Biltmore Estate, plenty of street art, and delicious food options, there’s no doubt that Asheville appeals to the city lovers among us.

Its location right next door to the Pisgah National Forest and Great Smoky Mountain National Park, however, make it a fabulous US weekend destination for outdoor enthusiasts, as well, and there are plenty of easy hikes near Asheville that allow travelers of all skill levels to enjoy the beautiful mountain setting.

No matter what your interests are, try to make time during your trip to Asheville to drive a small piece of the Blue Ridge Parkway–especially if you’re visiting in the fall and can enjoy the changing colors. Often considered one of the most beautiful road trips in the United States, it’s a sight not to be missed.

Where to Stay in Asheville

  • Cedar Crest Inn: This pink 1891 mansion house is a perfect place to base yourself in Asheville. Packed with historical details and stunning architecture you can imagine it as a mini Biltmore.
  • The Applewood Manor : Located within walking distance of downtown via a greenbelt trail, The Applewood Manor feels like it’s in a peaceful, quiet location–but it’s still in a perfect location to make the most of Asheville.

Home to country music, hot chicken, street art, and plenty of barbecue, there’s no doubt that Nashville, Tennessee is an excellent place to let the good times roll on your weekend away.

While Nashville is extremely popular as a bachelorette party destination and for other girls’ getaways, large groups are far from the only types of travelers who will enjoy a weekend in Music City, USA.

The best places to visit in Nashville include visiting the Grand Ole Opry (both for the show and for the backstage tour!), checking out the Johnny Cash Museum, seeing the Country Music Hall of Fame, and exploring Gulch, the street art neighborhood home to, among many other things, the #instagramfamous Nashville wings.

Be sure to save some time to enjoy the city’s famous nightlife when exploring the best things to do in Nashville . Its tasty food is also an important ingredient on any Nashville bucket list –be sure to try the hot chicken at least once, but be aware of your heat tolerance before ordering!

Where to Stay in Nashville

  • Hutton Hotel: Book into this stylish hotel for your romantic trip, relax on the hotel balcony, or stroll 10 minutes to Music Row.
  • Virgin Hotels: Part of the Virgin Group and with all the luxury details you might expect, with plenty of red and white details.

Located just a couple of hours north of Savannah, Charleston shares a lot of similarities with its neighbor to the south: fantastic southern food, Spanish moss dripping from the trees, beautiful architecture, lots of history to uncover–but it absolutely has its own distinct personality as well.

Be sure to visit the beautiful and photogenic Rainbow Row, check out the tea-making process at the Charleston Tea Plantation, visit the gorgeous and interesting Angel Oak Tree, stroll through Waterfront Park and Battery Park, and check out City Market.

Those interested in US military history will no doubt want to visit Patriots Point to tour the former US naval ships docked there and Fort Sumter for its history (and views).

Even for non-military-history buffs like us, these sights can still be an interesting way to spend some time!

Beach lovers, don’t miss the chance to check out nearby Folly Beach!

Where to Stay in Charleston

Set right on the water with the dramatic backdrop of Mount Rainier, it’s no wonder that busy and beautiful Seattle is one of the most popular west coast weekend getaways in the USA.

A weekend trip is the perfect amount of time to eat your way through Pike Place Market, head to the top of the Space Needle, visit the famous Chihuly Museum, and  check out the fun and interesting Museum of Pop Culture.

Looking for interesting neighborhoods? Head to Fremont, where the self-proclaimed unofficial motto is “des libertas quirkas”, aka “the freedom to be quirky”.

Hoping to spend some time outside? Nestled in the heart of the magnificent Pacific Northwest, endless waterfalls, trails, and mountains–even Mount Rainier itself–are located within day-tripping distance from Seattle.

Much like Austin, Portland proudly embraces its weirdness, celebrating the eclectic and bizarre in all possible ways–and that makes it endlessly fun to visit!

Bookworms like me will immediately head to Powell’s City of Books–I still think it’s the biggest bookstore I’ve ever visited–while foodies will want to head directly to the local ice cream obsession, Salt & Straw.

Voodoo Doughnuts, now with a few locations nationally, also originated here and remains popular with tourists (though depending on who you ask, not locals–for what it’s worth, we’d rate the doughnuts 7/10).

During your weekend trip to Portland, make time to visit the Japanese Garden and the International Rose Garden, especially if you visit when everything is in bloom.

Plenty of incredible parts of the Columbia River Gorge, including famous Multnomah Falls, are also within easy reach of Portland and deserve to feature on your list of things to do in Portland !

Where to Stay in Portland

  • Portland Regency Hotel & Spa : This historic hotel offers a hot tub, steam room, full-service spa, and other luxurious amenities that will truly make your vacation to Portland one to remember!
  • Portland Harbor Hotel: Located on Portland Waterfront is this luxury and stylish hotel. With beautifully designed rooms and a great restaurant, you are also well located to explore more of Portland.

Possibly the most iconic of all these weekend getaways in the USA, Las Vegas is a prime destination for short trips.

First-time visitors will certainly want to hit the Strip, even if only to check out the hotels, fountains, malls, and generally see what all the fuss is about–but there’s more to Vegas than the Strip (if you want there to be, that is).

Whether you want to hit the casinos to gamble and soak in some shows, check out Las Vega’s interesting (and far less touristed) downtown area, or get out and experience the fantastic natural highlights of the Southwest, Las Vegas has something to offer.

While the more-famous southern rim of the Grand Canyon is really too far away from Las Vegas to make a practical day trip, options like Valley of Fire State Park, Red Rock Canyon, and the Hoover Dam are all possibilities.

Where to Stay in Las Vegas

  • The Venetian: As one of the most iconic hotels on the Las Vegas strip this is a fabulous choice for your romantic trip. Everything about this resort is luxurious and huge, from the 1.2-acre pool deck to the in house shopping mall. Book a suite and feel like a real star.
  • Bellagio: Fans of the Ocean franchise will know this hotel and its fountains, although almost any Las Vegas fans know the fountain show of the Bellagio! Stay in this famous hotel for the ultimate treat.

San Francisco

The city of hills, ocean views, and the famous Golden Gate Bridge is at the top of many people’s lists of best USA weekend getaways–and with an endless list of things to do that cater to all interests, why not?

Be sure to pay a visit to the touristed highlights that most interest you–Fisherman’s Wharf (and its adorable sea lions!), Alcatraz, walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, visiting the Painted Ladies (of Full House fame), and checking out Lombard Street.

Once you cross those highlights off your list, though, make time for a few less-obvious attractions, like San Francisco’s Japanese Garden, the Land’s End Labyrinth, and Fort Point.

And, of course, you can’t forget to go for a walk in the woods while visiting San Francisco: the Muir Woods are an unforgettable experience worthy of your time on any weekend trip to the area!

Where to Stay in San Francisco

  • Petit Auberge: This adorable hotel in Nob Hill is the perfect place to base yourself for a romantic trip. Styled like a French Auberge with cozy furnishings and fireplaces in the rooms, opening onto pretty terraces, the hotel also has private parking. Essential in the city.
  • Beacon Grand: Opened in 1928 as a hotel for the creators of San Francisco society and recently reopened after restoration preserving architectural details and artisan crafts. Stay in a stunning piece of history and feel like a star.

New York City

How much of New York can you see on just a USA weekend getaway? Enough that you’ll want to come back immediately.

New York certainly can’t be “done” in a weekend–nor can it be done in a lifetime–but the great thing about New York City is that no matter who you are or what your interests are, whether you want to track down iconic spots, explore the best food in New York , see a show (or three), or discover offbeat NYC , you can find something to captivate you.

For tourists hoping for the classic NYC experience like we were on our first few visits, a weekend in New York is certainly long enough to see all those sights we’ve seen in movies and shows throughout our lives!

Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Grand Central, Times Square, the Public Library, a Broadway show or two, a visit to Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge–in a weekend, you can see all of that and more.

If you’re into museums, we also recommend hitting just one (no more–too much else to do!) during your weekend in New York: the Met, MOMA, and the Natural History Museum are all great, classic choices.

Where to Stay in New York

  • The Plaza Hotel : For a memorable place to stay, this is one of the most classic and luxurious hotels in New York. It is located right by Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, and some of NYC’s most popular museums.
  • The Renwick: Offering stylish residential style accommodation, this beautiful hotel is equipped with plenty of amenities and high class comfort. It is also a short walk to the Empire State Building and Bryant Park for exploring.

4 Day New York Itinerary: Manhattan Skyline with Brooklyn Bridge

Incredibly beautiful and steeped in both American history and its own distinct, modern culture, Boston is one of those cities you visit for a weekend and fall in love with for a lifetime (we would know–we’ve been crazy about it ever since our brief 3-month stint of living there!).

While you’re there, be sure to visit the picturesque North End, fashionable Back Bay, and grand Beacon Hill–three Boston neighborhoods you absolutely can’t miss.

Also consider strolling through the Boston Public Garden (one of our favorite spots in the city) and the Boston Common, visiting the penguins at New England Aquarium, meandering along the Freedom Trail, and hitting the water with a whale-watching cruise .

Bibliophiles like us shouldn’t miss the Boston Public Library (check out the Reading Room on the second floor!), nor Brattle Bookshop.

Sports fans, head directly to Fenway Park for a tour and/or a game.

Where to Stay in Boston

  • Found Hotel Boston Common: This boutique hotel in the Theatre District is perfect for exploring Boston. Rooms are bright and comfortable, and there is access to public transport a short walk from the hotel.
  • Revere Hotel Boston Common: Also in the Theatre District and close to Boston Common is this stylish hotel with a stunning rooftop terrace and bar, perfect for afternoon drinks. Rooms are spacious and have a coffee machine for those of you who need coffee the moment you wake up.

Washington DC

Our country’s capital city is not only the seat of our national government, it’s also a fabulous place for a weekend trip in the United States, and an incredibly popular stop for visitors from other countries who are planning a trip to the USA !

Museum-goers will be delighted with the enormous array of impressive options to choose from in Washington DC–everything from the many Smithsonian Museums, to quirky options like the International Spy Museum, to meaningful stops like the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, are available–far more than you can visit in a single weekend.

Those interested in US History and government will also have plenty to keep them busy along the National Mall, including iconic stops like the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, and those looking to enjoy the city’s magnificent food scene will love taking a DC food tour .

Touring the US Capitol is always an interesting experience, and if you plan ahead, you may even be able to tour the White House!

While DC has plenty to offer year-round, there’s no doubt that cherry blossom season in Washington DC is one of the best (and most popular) times to visit.

As a bonus, many of the things to do in Washington DC , including all of the Smithsonian museums, are free to enter.

Where to Stay in Washington DC

  • CitizenM Capitol : Another stunning example of CitizenM hotels is this location in Washington DC Capitol. Expect all the style and comfort these hotels are known for.
  • Riggs Washington DC : Located in the former home of Riggs National Bank this iconic building is now home to a classic and beautiful hotel. Rooms are huge and comfortable and offer views of Penn Quarter.

The self-proclaimed live music capital of the world, the home of the world-famous SXSW festival, and a city full of classic American charm with a country flair: when you’re looking for the best weekend getaways in the USA, it would be a shame to leave off the gem that is Austin, TX.

I have lived in Austin as both a child and an adult, and when I wasn’t living there, returned at least 1-2 times a year for most of my life due to family living in the area–and I never, ever get tired of visiting to tuck into a plate a delicious breakfast tacos, general TexMex, or barbecue.

During your weekend trip to Austin , head down to South Congress for fabulous food, eclectic boutiques, and incredible street art, and “Dirty Sixth” for some unforgettable nightlife (or alternatively, Rainey Street or Guadalupe Street for a different vibe).

Of course, this is the capital of Texas, so save some time during your weekend trip to Austin for some more typical cultural highlights, like visiting the Texas State Capitol and the historic (and possibly haunted) Driskill Hotel.

Plus, as Austin is surrounded by the stunning Texas Hill Country, no trip there is complete without going for at least one hike in Austin and taking a day trip to beloved nearby towns and wineries– Wimberley and Fredericksburg are both favorites.

Where to Stay in Austin

  • The Driskill: Originally built in 1886, The Driskill elegantly combines old-world charm with all of today’s modern luxuries. Dine at the award-winning on-site restaurant and enjoy the luxury of this iconic Austin landmark.
  • Hotel Saint Cecilia: This hotel set in pretty gardens is a great oasis in the city. There is an onsite pool with private bungalows, perfect for relaxing.

Visiting Chicago means it’s time for pizza, pizza, and more pizza… and okay, probably some sightseeing as well.

The sprawling city of Chicago, set right up against beautiful Lake Michigan, is certainly worthy of being included on any list of the best weekend getaways in the USA–and there are definitely plenty of fun things to do in Chicago to keep you busy while you’re there, including plenty of opportunities to explore the culture, enjoy delicious food, and even get outside in Chicago .

Come to Chicago for the weekend to snap selfies at The Bean, test your fear of heights on the famous Chicago Skydeck, pay a visit to Navy Pier, and of course, to eat a lot of deep dish.

Art lovers will find plenty of museums to devour in Chicago, including the incredible Art Institute of Chicago, and baseball fans will enjoy seeing the Cubs play a game at the famous Wrigley Field.

For animal lovers and family travelers, head directly to Shedd Aquarium (and for family travelers, make note of the American Girl Place as well–the highlight of my first visit to Chicago long, long ago!).

Where to Stay in Chicago

  • Warwick Allerton: Situated on the Magnificent Mile in Downtown Chicago, the hotel is perfect for shopping and discovering iconic architecture.
  • Staypineapple: This oddly named hotel was designed by a world renowned architect and features stylish details such as mosaic floors and marble ceilings. No detail is spared and rooms are a testament to the thought that has gone into each part of the hotel.

Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA.

Safely, Detroit is not on your list. Detroit is a fabulous city and Michiganders are very friendly and likeable.

Austin is not the country music capital — it’s the live music capital.

Well isn’t that an embarrassing typo for someone who has owned a Keep Austin Weird shirt for 20 years! Lol. I’ll get it fixed.

Very interesting

Or Madison… both have their own unique quirks that can keep a weekend enjoyable

You forgot Richmond Virginia, which would probably run circles around half of these cities on your list.

Not even close Tony!

absolutely incorrect

Umm Philly????

Will go on the list when we expand it! We love Philly. 🙂

Boise is an awesome city in the west too!

Love what you do, just curious, how do you make ends meet?

How did Dallas not make the list

Cause it sucks.

Great ideas, thank you!

Personally, I absolutely loved San Antonio what a great little weekend get away!

We love it too–one of our former homes and one of our favorite places to eat in the country!

Plan on staying the night in either The Crescent or The Basin Park Hotel . Both have their share of ghost stories, but their true draw is how they pull you into the vintage feel of the city. I have stayed at both but I don’t think got an ounce of sleep because the lights were always on and I was constantly checking under the bed!

America’s Best Long Weekend Getaways

Of course you want months off for vacation. Who doesn’t? But sometimes the best we can do is a restorative (or raucous) two-night weekend trip to somewhere fantastic. Here, the highlights from 13 of our favorite quick trips.

Asheville, North Carolina

For a low-key romantic weekend away, the art-centric mountain town of Asheville won’t do you wrong. Perhaps the crowning jewel of the trendy yet traditional city, the Biltmore Estate simply isn’t to be missed. The 250-room Gilded Age chateau sits on 8,000 acres of highly-curated gardens and meadow (all designed by the very guy behind NYC’s Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted) with the Blue Ridge Mountains serving as a super casual backdrop. Peeling yourself away from the largest mansion in the U.S., you’ll get your night’s sleep at The Windsor Boutique Hotel , a homey 14-suite rustic stay right in the heart of downtown. End your mini-retreat with brunch at Cúrate , a buzzy tapas-inspired restaurant with crowd pleasers like honey-drizzled fried eggplant and traditional tortilla española.

Seattle, Washington

Kimpton Hotels know how to turn on the quirk, and the historic Palladian is no exception. Guest rooms at the Belltown spot work screenprinted Mr. T and David Bowie pillows, vintage maps, and smart brass fixtures into an otherwise classic mix. Two blocks away, you’ll find the famous Pike Place Market , your go-to place for quick bites, while luxe sit-down meals are best at The Butcher’s Table , which delivers with a raw bar, inventive sides, and every cut of steak known to man. To walk it all off, head for exhibits at Chihuly Garden and Glass , an IG goldmine dripping in galleries of vibrant glass sculptures—the center of which is a suspended red, yellow, and amber floral piece that lives in the Glasshouse.

Miami Beach, Florida

Bed down at the ultra-quirky Freehand Miami for a stay packed with vintage travel ephemera, mod furniture (making use of a ROYGBIV palette), and a social courtyard with a pool, bocce, yoga, and art classes. Dinner is to be had at Byblos , a design-savvy, family-style Eastern Mediterranean joint that serves up duck kibbeh, Persian fried chicken, and fattouche, in an impossibly bright (and chic) dining room. Art is all around in the Magic City, and to see the best of it, you don’t need a ticket or a proper tour—simply take yourself on a self-guided walk around Ocean Drive’s Art Deco and Art Nouveau buildings, making sure to stop for photos at favorites like Hotel Breakwater South Beach , the Leslie Hotel , the Essex House Hotel , and The Tides South Beach .

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The boutique Palomar Philadelphia deftly spins an eccentric take on a classic American design scheme with neon presidential portraits, rainbow-hued busts, and plush velvet seating. Take an hour or so to hit Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens , a museum, outdoor art installation, and indoor gallery from mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar, which takes up half a block on the once-dilapidated (and now handsomely revitalized) South Street. Or swing by the Barnes Foundation  to see a stunning display of French impressionist and post-impressionist paintings. For some Philly history that isn’t the Liberty Bell, you can check out Eastern State Penitentiary —a massive, fortified prison that once held Al Capone—on an audio-guided tour narrated by the one and only Steve Buscemi. Afterwards, skip the over-hyped cheesesteaks at dueling shops Geno’s and Pat’s , and head instead for the Reading Terminal Market , where you can nom on pad thai, oyster sliders, and sweet dessert crepes all under one roof.

Austin, Texas

A weekend is all you need to see the very best of Texas’s coolest city. Kick it off with a locals-only brunch at Elizabeth St. Cafe , a chic French-Vietnamese boulangerie where coconut water and preserved tangerine margaritas are served in Chinese takeout containers. Newer spots on our radar include the Southern-inspired Colleens Kitchen, Pool Burger (we love the Blue Hawaiian, topped with grilled pineapple slices, bacon, crumbled blue cheese, and Thousand Island dressing), and Aviary Wine & Kitchen. For some retail therapy, head to South Congress for an afternoon at the boutiques; United Apparel Liquidators is the place for designer couture (Balenciaga, Rag & Bone, Givenchy, to name a few) at bargain basement discounts. Don’t leave the city without going for a dip at Barton Springs Pool , the aquifer-fed swimming hole of choice where a young Robert Redford learned how to swim.

Chicago, Illinois

You can’t go to Chi-town without stopping by the Art Institute of Chicago . We’d say the same about leafy Garfield Park Conservatory , built on nearly five acres in 1906 and often referred to as “landscape art under glass;” the Chicago architecture river cruise ; and, of course, Wrigley Field . (Yes, all of these are touristy, but so worth it.) You could spend an entire weekend eating your way through this city. Some of our favorite spots to hit up now include the Michelin-starred brewpub, Band of Bohemia; the wildly popular Korean-American restaurant, Parachute (book early!); and the British-inspired Owen and Engine , which serves one of the finest burgers in town. As for where to stay, we’re digging Hotel Zachary , with its stunning grand staircase and knockout views of Wrigley Field from almost every room.

Boulder, Colorado

Just north of Denver, an outdoorsy paradise where locals are tanned, toned, and likely just back from a trail run awaits. Catch up with the best of them on the one-mile First Flatiron trail , which winds through Boulder’s iconic sandstone slab rock formations. Break for afternoon tea in an intricately carved wooden teahouse at Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse originally made in Tajikistan—it’s a highbrow prelude to an afternoon tour of Avery Brewing , home to the hoppy India Pale Ale. After a couple of brews, head back to your hotel (there’s the funky, low-key Basecamp and more upscale St. Julien Hotel and Spa ) for a quick nap before dinner at the ever-popular northeastern Italian-inspired restaurant Frasca Food and Wine run by Chef Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson.

New Orleans, Louisiana

In the land of beignets, po’ boys and kicked-up cajun cuisine, a weekend in NOLA is all about EATING. Start the gluttony with the classic creole-inspired brunch (and 25 cent martinis!) at Commander’s Palace —the wild Louisiana white shrimp stuffed with spicy tasso ham, Crystal hot sauce, pickled okra, and pepper jelly is a must. And we can’t leave out classics like Cafe Du Monde’s famous deep-fried pastry, Bon Ton Cafe’s jambalaya, and Bevi Seafood Co.’s peacemaker po’ boy full of fried shrimp, swiss cheese, and roast beef gravy with a side of seafood gumbo. Newcomers worth checking out include Josephine Estelle , the Italian osteria at the Ace Hotel . Alternatively, skip all of that and go from breakfast to lunch to dinner at the Roch Market food hall. You’ll want to pack those fat pants.

Fountain in a park at Savannah, GA

Savannah, Georgia

Warning: A trip to Savannah is highly caloric. But if you don’t indulge, you’re not doing it right. The line runs down the block for Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room , for very good reason: the fried chicken, candied yams, and macaroni and cheese are so good, you’ll want to get in line all over again for dinner. Explore the city’s art scene at the various galleries around City Market on your own or sign up for a tour on the second Saturday of every month. History buffs can learn about Savannah’s past at the 1868 Mercer Williams House , the former home of Jim Williams and the site of the killing of Danny Hansford in May of 1981 (remember, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil?). It’s also worth checking out the iconic Bonaventure Cemetery , dripping in Spanish moss and rumored to be full of ghosts—you can shake off the heebie-jeebies with a jalapeño margarita at the 18th century Olde Pink House .

San Diego, California

Of course, you’ll want to hit the beach in San Diego. La Jolla Cove is our personal favorite, with verdant grass that leads to craggy cliffs, but there’s so much more to do in this SoCal city. Wander the 15 (!) museums at the 1,200-acre Balboa Park , hike to the lagoon at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve , and feast on some of the best Mexican food north of the border at Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop (we love the steak, shrimp, avocado and chipotle taco).

Portland, Oregon

Portland has a reputation for being the Brooklyn of the West—which isn’t entirely unfounded, given its profusion of microbrews and macro-beards. Your first stop: Ned Ludd , where almost everything on the menu (local rabbit and roasted radishes, or chocolate chip cookies in a cast iron pan, for example) is cooked on a wood fire. Hike through the rainforest to feel the spray of the 627-foot waterfall at Multnomah Falls , just half an hour from downtown Portland. Leave time for a trip to peruse the two million-some volume at Powell’s City of Books , a local favorite on Burnside St.

Palm Springs, California

Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elizabeth Taylor — a who’s who of showbiz has long found solace in Palm Springs. Today this desert oasis is the perfect mix of modern and kitschy which attracts a hip L.A. crowd. Spend an afternoon wandering the Uptown Design District, where eye-catching boutiques (we love the Midcentury housewares at Christopher Anthony ) are joined by retro-chic restaurants and bars. Bootlegger Tiki , Palm Canyon Drive’s mixology-centered newcomer, has a 12–2 a.m. happy hour, kitschy luau-themed décor, and hangover-worthy cocktails (we love the cheekily-named Mango Unchained.) If live music is what you seek, check out Melvyn’s , the storied supper club-style hangout once frequented by Ol’ Blue Eyes himself.

Shelter Island, New York

The 12-square-mile atoll sits between the tony North Fork and the Hamptons but feels a hushed world away (more than a third of the area is fiercely protected by the Nature Conservancy). Here, it’s all about unwinding, from the golden-sand beaches and hiking paths to farm fresh produce and sunset cocktails. The island’s newest place to bed down is Chequit Inn , with 37 shabby-chic rooms, C.O. Bigelow toiletries, and complimentary breakfast. For dinner, don’t miss the Montauk pearl oysters and lobster pot pie at Vine Street Café (or pick up goodies to go at the food market out back).

Chatham Bars Inn

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Late May marks the beginning of Cape Cod’s whale watching season, and wildlife enthusiasts won’t want to miss the opportunity to set out in the sunshine and try to catch a glimpse of migrating humpback and finback whales. Book with  Hyannis (out of Barnstable) or  Sea Salt Charters (out of Provincetown), both of whom work with NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) to ensure safe and sustainable practices. Afterwards, grab an overflowing scoop of Marstons Mills Mint Chip or Bass River Black Raspberry at  Cape Cod Creamery , or snack on classic New England clam chowder and an extra-buttery lobster roll at  Sesuit Harbor Café , overlooking the water.

Stay here:  Not far from the stunning nature of the Outer Cape, there are loads of oceanfront villas and lodges designed with utmost comfort and privacy in mind.  The Villages at Ocean Edge Resort and Golf Club , in Brewster, offers airy suites full of clean neutrals and has access to its sister resort’s nine tennis courts, five pools, bike rentals, and private beach. Just south of that is  Chatham Bars Inn , situated on 25 private acres perched atop a seaside bluff. Catch some Zs in an adorable cottage with bay windows, private decks, and cozy fireplaces, and enjoy amenities like an on-site spa, golf course, and Japanese Zen gardens.

St. Petersburg, Florida

St. Petersburg is the ideal Florida city for a long weekend vacation. Nestled along the serene Gulf Coast, St. Pete has some of the most enviable beaches in the state, but it’s also gaining recognition for its thriving arts scene. Most notable is the world-renowned Dalí Museum , but don’t miss the colorful and unique murals adorning the downtown area as well. Meanwhile, the St. Pete Pier, reopened in summer 2020 after a years-long revitalization effort, offers 26 acres of dining, entertainment, and greenery to explore near downtown.

Stay here: Art lovers should stay at the historic Vinoy Resort & Golf Club, Autograph Collection , with a downtown location close to murals and museums. The resort also boasts several outdoor pools, a golf course, tennis courts, and its own marina.

Cathedral rock reflection in rain poolPlease see more Sedona Arizona images in my portfolio

Sedona, Arizona

A year-round haven for new age radicals, desert-loving hikers , and singletrack-speeding mountain bikers, Sedona truly comes alive in the spring, when the weather hovers around a breezy 86 degrees, and the summer crowds have not yet arrived. Immerse yourself in the locale’s famous red rocks on the easy  Fay Canyon Trail , then unwind in town with a sumptuous spa treatment at  The Wilde or  Amara Resort and Spa . Meet a mystic or buy a fully-charged crystal at the legendary  Center for the New Age before indulging in a fabulous canyon-view dinner at  Che Ah Chi .

Stay here:  If you’re alright staying out of town,  Enchantment Resort (and their newly-refurbished sister property  Mii amo ) are the best of the bunch, and ultra-close to must-have experiences, like hiking and cycling through dramatic sandstone ravines. If you’re hell-bent on sleeping in town, check out the wellness program at luxurious  L’Auberge de Sedona , which, apart from having dreamy cottages set against the backdrop of Oak Creek, hosts art therapy sessions, yoga classes, and sound healing sit-ins.

Jeune et Jolie Carlsbad California

Carlsbad, California

Every year from March to May, ranunculus flowers take over 50 acres of The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch (most people visit during peak bloom in April, so you’ll dodge the flower peepers over MDW). But this coastal SoCal town is well worth visiting beyond the botanicals. You can easily spend a long weekend swimming and kayaking off the beaches, taking the family to LEGOLAND California, or indulging in some seriously great food. Be sure to stop by Jeune et Jolie , a contemporary French-style bistro that earned its first Michelin star in late 2021; then finish up with some must-try shortbread cookies (all made with local ingredients) at Carlsbad Cookie Company .

Stay here: When you’re not busy filling your Instagram feed with florals, rest up in peak luxury at the Park Hyatt Aviara , a Hot List and Readers’ Choice Award winner. The 200-acre coastal resort attracts visitors with an 18-hole golf course, expansive spa, and both family-friendly and adults-only pool areas.

Calgary and Banff National Park, Canada

What used to be known as a big-industry cowboy town has since been revitalized into a hotel and foodie mecca, and it’s all just a 90-minute drive from iconic  Banff National Park . Fly into Calgary and spend a day walking around picturesque Prince’s Island Park and stop in for a hearty brunch at  River Café , which uses locally-sourced produce and seafood in its dishes. Grab dinner and a craft cocktail at ultra-hip  Shokunin , located right downtown. If you've only got one day to spend in Banff, rent a car and head for the darling  Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise , which sits at the edge of the brilliantly blue tarn that shares its name. From here, guests can hop directly onto a series of postcard-worthy hiking trails, canoe in the lake, or catch some incredible, bird’s eye views of the Canadian Rockies from the  Lake Louise Summer Gondola , which opens May 19. Hoping to see a glacier up close? The  Columbia Icefield Adventure opened on May 6.

Stay here:  In town, keep it historic and elegant by booking a room at the centrally-located  Fairmont Palliser , or get funky and enjoy Bow River views at newer  Alt Hotel Calgary East Village . In Banff, there’s no better activity access than at  Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise (pro tip: they just revamped their restaurant and wellness programs in mid-2022), which features marvelous views of rocky mountaintops and, of course, glacially-fed Lake Louise.

Maine

We’ve never been more excited to plan a trip to Maine, thanks in large part to the 2021 opening of Under Canvas’s new outpost in Acadia National Park. The 100-acre oceanfront “glampsite” feature 62 luxe tents, which guests can enjoy between hiking, picking blueberries, or chartering their own personal lobster boat. Outside of Acadia on Deer Isle, we’re also eager to visit Aragosta at Goose Cove , a restaurant helmed by Devin Finigan, who was recognized as a semi-finalist for the 2020 James Beard Awards. As an added bonus, Aragosta doubles as a hotel from May to November, with 12 suites and cottages.

Stay here: If you decide to pass on Under Canvas, head to Portland for your accommodations. The Press Hotel , located downtown, is a continuous winner in our annual Readers’ Choice Awards, thanks to its fun journalism theme (complete with typewriters in the lobby), comfortable beds, and a restaurant serving up super-local dishes.

Cabo San Lucas Memorial Day Getaways

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas has long been the favorite landing spot of party-ready spring breakers, but you’re likely to find a more laidback crowd during Memorial Day Weekend. Charter a boat to see the famous El Arco rock formation and do some snorkeling, then head back to town for some seriously delicious Mexican food. We recommend Los Michoacanos , a small chain that has a recipe for pork carnitas dating back to 1899.

Stay here: Enveloped by short, craggy hills on 24 pristine acres of Baja California beachfront, Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal (a Readers’ Choice Award winner for five years running) is practically floating in open waters. Take advantage of the “Beyond the Beach Curated Exploration” program, which offers a personalized day trip to swim with whale sharks and snorkel in Cabo Pulmo Marine Park.

Inns of Aurora

The Finger Lakes, New York

Long known for its wine, the Finger Lakes of New York has been undergoing a positive transformation over the past few years. The 14-county region, defined by its 11 long, skinny lakes, is about four to five hours northwest of New York City by car, and city folks will certainly enjoy the slow, rural pace of life here. For the holiday weekend, we particularly recommend the town of Waterloo, also known as the birthplace of Memorial Day. This is where the first formal observance of the holiday was held, and today you can visit landmarks like the National Memorial Day Museum and Scythe Tree, which was originally planted by a Civil War soldier. Then, head south to the storybook village of Aurora, where you should grab lunch at Fargo Bar & Grill before settling down in one of the town’s historic inns.

Stay here: We’re big fans of the Inns of Aurora , a collection of luxury guesthouses with eclectic interiors and lake views. The inn also has one of the best hotel amenities we’ve come across: a Director of Serenity, who is dedicated to bringing physical, mental, and spiritual wellness to guests, whether it’s through one-on-one yoga lessons or curated relaxation playlists and customized aromatherapy.

Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

As the weather gets increasingly hot in Phoenix, residents flock to northern Arizona for cooler temperatures. (Well, relatively cooler.) If you have yet to visit one of the country’s most popular national parks, go ahead and follow the locals to the Grand Canyon to enjoy the world wonder in all its glory. Aim to hit the trails by 10 a.m. at the latest to dodge the big crowds and searing sun—although you should pack extra sunscreen just in case.

Stay here: Book a room at the Grand Canyon Railway & Hotel , located in Williams right next door to the Grand Canyon Railway train depot. Here you'll be just a train ride—a very scenic train ride—away from the Grand Canyon, and you can avoid the long lines of traffic into the park. It’s even possible to charter an entire railway car complete with chefs and bartenders, ideal for milestone moments like graduation, family reunions, or birthday.

Williamsburg

Williamsburg, Virginia

One of our favorite weekend getaways from D.C. , Williamsburg is a great place to spend Memorial Day. The city stands in the middle of what’s dubbed the historic triangle (along with Jamestown and Yorktown), in a Virginia peninsula bookended by the James and York rivers. Aside from spending time outdoors in Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown’s open-air museums, there are plenty of fun activities that signal the start of summer: kayaking, golfing, farmer’s markets in Yorktown, and, of course, a full day spent at Busch Gardens .

Stay here: Staying at one of the Colonial Williamsburg Resorts allows you to soak up all that history and culture even after the attractions close. The resorts are offering a Summer Getaway Package beginning in mid-May that comes with nightly accommodations, Busch Gardens tickets, passes to Colonial Williamsburg, and more.

San Juan PR

Puerto Rico

We’ve evangelized about Puerto Rico for many reasons in recent years, from the post-Hurricane Maria hotel renovations to the relatively low prices of round-trip airfares. While the island certainly warrants repeat visits, you can get a good taste of San Juan and its surrounding beaches in just three days . Walk around the capital city’s candy-colored historic district and sample classic Puerto Rican cuisine at Café Manolin, then rent a car and seek out some nature. It only takes about six hours to drive around the entire island, giving you ample time to visit sites like the idyllic Dorado Beach and El Yunque National Forest.

Stay here: Spend your nights (and part of your days) at the luxurious modern retreat that is Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve . After being greeted at check-in with tropical popsicles, you can expect huge rooms, cinematic views of the ocean, and a private butler to arrange helicopter tours and private yacht bookings.

New River Gorge Bridge West Virginia

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, West Virginia

May is considered the ideal month for  paddling high whitewater on the New River, and if you’re looking for an epic (and active) family getaway, look no further than America’s youngest national park,  New River Gorge . With an average high of 70 degrees throughout the month, it’s also an excellent time to hit the area’s many hiking trails (we love the 3.2-mile (round trip) jaunt to  Long Point , which features an excellent view of the impressive steel of New River Gorge Bridge). There’s loads of world-class  rock climbing in the park, too, as well as mellow opportunities to grab your  stand-up paddleboard and enjoy the sunset at Summersville Lake.

Stay here:  By far, the biggest game in town is  Adventures on the Gorge , which boasts everything from cozy glamping tents to deluxe four-bedroom cabins with private hot tubs (they’ve also got a tasty on-site restaurant overlooking the gorge that serves up standard Americana fare– Smokey’s ). Or, if you’ve got the whole crew in tow, snag an amenity-rich vacation rental like  The Paddle House or  The LilyPad .

Hotel Zena Washington D.C.

Washington, D.C.

Given the patriotic nature of the holiday weekend, our nation’s capital is one of the best Memorial Day weekend getaways. Set aside time for the National Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30 at 2 p.m., which ushers floats, marching bands, and veterans down Constitution Avenue. Then pay your respects at the various memorials and monuments on the National Mall, and book a table at one of the trendy restaurants near The Wharf. Come nighttime, the city’s abundance of stellar hotels will have you spoiled for choice.

Stay here: Open since October 2020, Hotel Zena is proving to be one of the buzziest hotels in the city. The hotel has branded itself with artsy women’s empowerment, from the portrait of Ruth Bader Ginsburg hanging in the lobby to the transparent reception desk filled with recycled high heels. Consider its Logan Circle location an added bonus.

Bermuda Memorial Day Weekend Getaways

You must admit, a long weekend spent lounging on pink-sand beaches and sipping rum swizzles sounds pretty perfect. That’s exactly what you’ll get (and then some) on a trip to Bermuda , which is an easy 90-minute, non-stop flight from New York. Despite its small size of about 21 miles long, the North Atlantic island is filled with tons of things to do , from helmet diving and nature reserve tours to excellent shops and restaurants. But if you want to spend most of your trip on those aforementioned beaches, we wouldn’t blame you a bit.

Stay here: On a hilltop overlooking a turquoise harbor, Rosewood Bermuda is the epitome of extravagance—there’s no better place to book if you want a trip of pure luxury and relaxation. The 92 rooms and suites are straight out of the pages of a design magazine, with crisp white linens on elegant four-poster beds, spa-like bathrooms with oversized soaking tubs, and large private balconies offering Atlantic views. You can also expect a championship-caliber golf course, several swimming pools, a full-service spa, and a private pink-sand beach in case you prefer your sunbathing with a side of exclusivity.

Cape May New Jersey

Cape May, New Jersey

There’s lots to love about Cape May. The town’s historic Victorian district is a perfect marriage of charm and history, and miles of intricate, candy-colored mansions make for prime early-morning-stroll viewing. And then there are the beaches. While the town itself has just over two miles of shoreline, you can find about 30 miles of white-sand, activity-packed beaches along the entire Jersey Cape. (Just note that everyone above the age of 12 must obtain a beach tag from Memorial Day through Labor Day, which can be purchased online .) Another big Cape May draw? Some of the best birdwatching in the country.

Stay here: The Blue Oasis beach house ( available on VRBO ) is one of our favorite small-town vacation rentals . The recently renovated home has four bedrooms and two spacious decks overlooking the water. It’s only a five-second walk from the back deck to the ocean, and you might even spot some humpback whales if you’re lucky (June to September are the true peak viewing months, but the entire season runs from March to December).

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho

There’s no wrong time to visit Yellowstone (yes, even in the dead of winter ), but this year marks the National Park’s 150th birthday —a great excuse to visit now if there ever was one. The landmark is a great one to explore by car, with most of the main attractions main attractions situated along the 142-mile Grand Loop Road. But if you want to dodge the crowds (and there most definitely will be crowds), pick one area and head off the main road along any of the 1,100 miles of trails. For example, you can head to the popular Mammoth Hot Springs and then try a moderate hike at the nearby Bunson Peak Trailhead; or see the Old Faithful geyser, then hop on the Mystic Falls Trailhead for a three-mile roundtrip hike to a 70-foot waterfall.

Stay here: A mere 10-minute drive from Yellowstone’s west entrance in Montana, Under Canvas Yellowstone is one of the best options for those who value location and convenience (and a whole lot of amenities) above all else. Each of the tents has a private deck, a private shower and toilet, and a wood-burning stove to keep warm when the sun goes down—plus, as with all Under Canvas properties, luxurious perks like organic bath products and West Elm furnishings.

Austin Texas

Rounding out our list of Memorial Day weekend getaways is Austin, a city that pulls out all the stops for the holiday—namely in the form of the Hot Luck Live Food & Music Festival (May 25–28). The festival is basically a combination of the city’s two favorite things: food and music. Dozens of local chefs will be cooking up some of their signature dishes (Aaron Franklin of Franklin’s Barbecue and Alon Shaya of Saba are two stand-outs), while DJ Jazzy Jeff and Superchunk will headline the musical performances. Even if you decide to skip the festival, Austin has enough breakfast tacos, hiking trails, line dancing, mezcal, and food trucks to keep you plenty busy all weekend.

Stay here: Just 10 minutes from downtown, Commodore Perry Estate, Auberge Resorts Collection feels like a secret European escape with its English-style gardens and Italianate and Spanish Revival architecture. The rooms are bathed in custom pink wallpaper, vintage rugs, and soft velvet textiles, though the organic garden and swimming pool will certainly lure you outside. It’s the perfect spot to take a relaxed, meditative breath between jaunts into the city center.

Boca Chita Key at Biscayne National Park in FL

Biscayne National Park, Florida

Picture a sprawling saltwater bay full of psychedelic coral reefs, maze-like mangrove forests, quirky manatees, aquamarine water, and tropical islets. Are you picturing the Caribbean? Think again.  Biscayne National Park , on the southeastern edge of Florida, offers road trip access to sights typically seen on a far-flung island vacay. Schedule a  Sail, Paddle, Snorkel & Island Visit tour with Biscayne Bay Institute to soak up the best of the area’s history and scenery (trying to spot baby sharks and lobsters underwater). If you’ve got extra time, spend a day cruising down the sun-spattered  Overseas Highway to Key West and visit the historic  Hemingway Home .

Stay here:  To really take in that colorful Keys vibe that locals love to tout, stay at  Playa Largo Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection , and request a Bay Front Suite to sip your morning coffee as the sun’s glow hovers above the Atlantic surf. Or, if you’re feeling spendy, bed down at the ultra-romantic  Bungalows Key Largo , which boasts rows of private indoor/outdoor bungalows, porches with water views, and outdoor soaking tubs under the twinkling Milky Way.

Whidbey Island Deception Pass Washington

Whidbey Island, Washington

Just 30 miles north of Seattle sits Whidbey Island, the Pacific Northwest ’s answer to Nantucket. The 55-mile-long island is a mecca for outdoorsy folks, with enough water sports and hiking trails to plan an entire trip around—especially during late spring and early summer. To get a unique sense of space, book a tree-climbing excursion with AdventureTerra . With the help of ropes and a guide, climbers ascend the island’s Coastal Douglas Firs to reach the top of the forest canopy with a bird’s eye view of the famous Deception Pass Bridge and neighboring San Juan Islands.

Stay here: Originally built in 1907, the Captain Whidbey inn was rebooted in 2019—and it still remains our favorite place to stay on the island. The six-acre, 30-room property has its own private lagoon and dock, and the best way to arrive is by seaplane at dusk.

1873 Lighthouse Daufuskie Island South Carolina

Daufuskie Island, South Carolina

Daufuskie, a car-free historic island off Hilton Head, was once considered the Martha’s Vineyard of the South. It’s far more accessible now than in the past, and you can stay right on one of its beautiful beaches in either a converted mansion or an old lighthouse. Don’t leave before horseback riding on the beach, keeping an eye out for bottlenose dolphins somersaulting above the waves.

Stay here: Stay at the aforementioned 1873 Lighthouse at Haig Point, complete with two bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, and porch overlooking Calibogue Sound, plus access to the beach where you’ll never see more than a dozen people at one time.

Blue Lagoon

Iceland is one of the best Memorial Day weekend getaways. While you can’t possibly see all of the country’s greatest hits in one long weekend, you can certainly get a good taste. Set up camp in Reykjavik, then rent a car and drive your way through the Golden Circle’s trio of iconic attractions: Thingvellir , Geysir, and Gullfoss.

Stay here: Iceland’s capital finally got the five-star hotel it deserves with the The Reykjavík Edition , a Hot List 2022 winner that opened about six months ago. The hotel is a mash-up of everything we love about Edition hotels with plenty of Icelandic flair: think an enormous undulating wall projection of the Northern Lights in the lobby, minibars stocked with local snacks, and a restaurant serving up Icelandic lamb loin and house-made coffee ice cream.

Waikiki Beach

Waikiki, Hawaii

With a large military population, Memorial Day is widely celebrated in Hawaii. Get a sampling of everything by staying near Waikiki Beach , a popular swim and surf destination that is only about 25 minutes away from Pearl Harbor by car. Visit the USS Arizona Memorial, pay tribute at the Remembrance Circle, and learn about the events of December 7, 1941, at interactive exhibits, then head back to the vibrant Waikiki community to shop, sunbathe, and relax.

Stay here: The retro-inspired Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club is located right in the center of Waikiki, and offers artistic decor, an award-winning restaurant, and pool with custom tile spelling out “Wish You Were Here” at the bottom.

Lake Tahoe

North Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada

Ski season ends in Lake Tahoe after April, but the region still offers tons of great outdoor activities as the weather warms up. There really is something for everyone here, from hiking and biking to bird-watching and golf; or get on the water and explore the Lake Tahoe Water Trail , a 72-mile water route connecting public beaches with landing sites. For something extra special, take a “Lit Up After Dark” tour with Wild Society Adventures to experience the lake after dark from a clear-bottom kayak.

Stay here: North Lake Tahoe’s only waterfront resort, the Hyatt Regency , encourages outdoor play year-round, and new on-site adventure and wellness specialists can plan electric bike tours on the Tahoe East Shore Trail (great for sunset watching), painting classes among the pines, or morning meditations at the resort’s Water Garden.

Rosewood Little Dix Bay

British Virgin Islands

Made up of more than 60 islands, the British Virgin Islands have no shortage of coastline to explore. To escape the crowds, seek out Sage Mountain, a notable landmark. Wandering among elephant ear vines and native trees, you’ll encounter tropical flora and fauna, while numerous lookouts offer views of sea and sky. Virgin Gorda is the third largest of the BVI, with natural beauty covering virtually all of its 8.5 square miles. The island offers quiet beaches and coves and flora-filled national parks. Perhaps the prettiest (and most popular) attraction, though, is the Baths, a seaside area where huge granite boulders form scenic saltwater pools and grottos.

Stay here: You can’t do better than Rosewood Little Dix Bay on Virgin Gorda, which reopened in early 2020 after a four-year renovation. You’ll be treated with a choice of 80 updated guest rooms, hiking trails across the island, and a new cliffside spa.

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway

Colorado Springs

There are five military institutions in Colorado Springs, so Memorial Day weekend is always a city-wide celebration—and, as always, the beautiful scenery of Colorado is within easy reach. We’re still reeling with excitement from last year’s reopening of The Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway , a 130-year-old train fresh off a multi-year, $100 million renovation. The railway is the highest in the country, taking guests above 14,000 feet to the summit of Pikes Peak.

Stay here: A favorite among our readers, The Broadmoor feels more like a grand hotel in the Alps than a domestic destination. Outdoor activities include horseback riding, golf, fly fishing, and hiking. (The 5,000-acre resort has its own waterfalls to make hiking even better.) This Memorial Day, be sure to order a pint of the Broadmoor’s own custom beer, the Prospector’s Pick Kolsch, which is made by a Veteran-owned brewery in Colorado Springs.

Niagara Canada

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada

The Niagara Peninsula—a stretch of Ontario that borders the Great Lakes, about 90 minutes southeast of Toronto—offers hundreds of miles of scenic roads and waterways for the traveler who longs for some outdoor solitude. (In fact, this area is so serene, it seems almost impossible that Niagara Falls and the tens of millions of people who visit it every year are just a half hour down the road.) Anchor yourself in the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake on the far east side of the region, then spend your days exploring. We suggest you rent a bike from Zoom Leisure and leisurely peddle along gorgeous lakes, waterfalls, and vineyards, and maybe even stop by a tasting room or two. Back in town, unwind at one of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s excellent restaurants, wineries, or bakeries.

Stay here: If Victorian decor (without being fuddy-duddy, we should add) is your thing, Prince of Wales Hotel is the place for you. The hotel sits right on the main drag on Niagara-on-the-Lake, making it prime for those who’d prefer to stroll around rather than drive, while its British-inspired hospitality includes polite staff and afternoon tea service. The rooms feature floral wallpaper and four-poster beds, and amenities include an indoor pool, restaurant, lounge, and spa.

Some of the spots are great for a 2- or 3-day weekend (think: Nashville and Austin), while others benefit from a slightly longer stay, such as Portugal or Puerto Rico. Some are ideal for girls who want to go on trip in the U.S. (we recommend taking a road trip from Miami to Key West), while others are perfect for those who are hankering to go abroad, like Dublin and Barcelona). Not to mention that we've even included a few girls' trip ideas that would double as a good mother-daughter weekend getaway, like Sonoma or Savannah.

No matter what you choose, keep in mind that amid the coronavirus pandemic, your girls' vacation will probably look a bit different, depending on factors like your vaccination status and where you're headed. So make sure to check what rules are in place at your destination (either through the state health departments or the U.S. Embassies and Consulates ) and follow CDC guidance for how to best protect yourself and others while traveling domestically or internationally .

Ahead, we've rounded up the best girls' trip ideas—from beach vacations perfect for birthday trips to remote places that are all about R&R—and included suggestions for the most fun activities at each destination. Now, all you have to do is pack.

This coastal Southern charmer (cobblestone streets! Spanish moss!) is perfect for any girls trip where the key word is unwind. The surrounding area, known for its picturesque horse pastures, is also home to the Monticello Wine Trail , which boasts an impressive 33 vineyards. One of the most beloved is Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyard , which serves delicious farm-to-table fare alongside lush varietals like sparkling rosé and their signature red, Easton Blue. Stay at charming 20-room The Clifton , located on a sprawling 100 acres.

Killington, Vermont

reflection, nature, sky, natural landscape, leaf, water, wilderness, lake, tree, atmospheric phenomenon,

There’s never really a bad time to visit Vermont: stunning foliage in the fall, beautiful hiking in the summer, and, of course, some of the best skiing on the East Coast once the temperatures plummet. Killington may be the best mountain of them all , featuring world-class slopes, of course, but for the less coordinated, there’s also ski bikes, tubing, and even Snowcat-drawn sleigh rides. If you're looking for a major (yet worthwhile) splurge, repair your aching limbs with a night at Twin Farms , a cozy inn with a seasonally changing restaurant. Or, stay at any number of nearby B&Bs.

Las Vegas, Nevada

No girls trip list is complete without including Sin City. But for those who haven’t visited since their bachelorette days, much has changed. Top-tier talent like Katy Perry, Celine Dion, and Carrie Underwood are rumored to have residencies in the works at the at Resorts World Las Vegas and food has evolved from sticky all-you-can-eat buffets to celebrity seafood favorite CATCH Las Vegas at ARIA Resort & Casino , and the stunning, 64-story-high Rivea by Alain Ducasse at Delano Las Vegas . Book a stay at the sleek Cosmopolitan , which has super chic rooms and private spa suites for groups at its Sahra Spa & Hammam .

Austin, Texas

capitol building, aerial skyline, sunset, austin, tx, texas state capital

Two words: breakfast tacos . Of course, the crowds don’t flock to Austin just for the food: excellent live music, Insta-worthy hotels, and the gorgeous landscape make it a pretty perfect vacation destination. Snag rooms at Hotel San Jose , an oasis with garden courtyards and a pool hidden in the middle of trendy South Congress. At night, be sure to check out the Rainey Street Historic District , a residential-turned-commercial row where bungalow homes were turned into lively bars. Recover the next day by booking services at Lake Austin Spa Resort —they can even provide water taxi service to their gorgeous Texas Hill Country grounds.

And while definitely not in Austin, if you're up for a road trip to a place where you can experience the best of Hill Country, the Inn at Dos Brisas offers opulent casitas or hacienda, where you and your pals can unwind with wine by the fire. While it's certainly a splurge, it's a unique spot for a special occasion, like a birthday trip.

Hawaii Island, Hawaii

sky, tree, daytime, architecture, cloud, flag, landscape, plant, soil, photography,

It’s hard to imagine natural beauty that could rival that of the Big Island : site-seeing includes everything from the world’s most active volcano, gargantuan waterfalls, black and green sand beaches, and even helicopter tours of the impossibly green valleys. Of course, group hikes call for spa sessions, which the Hualalai Spa and Sports Club located at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai is perfect for. Outdoor treatment rooms, reflexology walking streams, and Hawaiian-inspired treatments make the experience unforgettable. Don’t miss the “boga” classes: that’s yoga conducted on floating mats, of course.

Miami, Florida

swimming pool, property, resort, real estate, vacation, building, leisure, home, house, tree,

It’s hard to think of another American city that’s as fun as this Florida playground. For a one-stop shop, stay at buzzy hotel The Confidante Miami Beach . Situated around 20 blocks north of the hustle and bustle of Ocean Drive, this quieter oasis is perfect if you and your girls take your R&R quite seriously. One of its two pools is dedicated exclusively to families, meaning you can sneak away to the other if children are splashing around a bit too much. And in addition to colorful popsicles courtesy of Cielito Artisan Pops , there's also a Hello Bello amenity cart packed with plant-based poolside essentials like SPF, bug spray, and body lotion. Enjoy a hearty breakfast at Rosie's before heading to the beach or checking out the Instagram-worthy murals at Wynwood Walls . Or, try the more urban Thēsis Hotel Miami , which has a sunny rooftop pool with stellar views, and, perhaps more importantly, a poolside bar.

Nashville, Tennessee

broadway in downtown nashville, tennessee

There’s a reason why you see a bachelorette party nearly every 50 feet in Music City: Southern hospitality mixes with unbelievable live music and a bustling bar scene to create a perfect storm of happiness. Stay at the Bobby Hotel , just minutes from the famed Printer’s Alley clubs and bars of downtown. If the rowdy bustle of Broadway isn't for you, unwind at the property's rooftop pool, complete with an airstream ripe for the 'gram or enjoy a cocktail at the stunning lobby bar below. Then, recover the next morning with a traditional (and rib-sticking) meal at Arnold’s Country Kitchen to sample the city’s famed meat-and-three plate. For dinner, don't skip the mac and cheese at Mockingbird . And, of course, grab loads of ooey-gooey Goo Goo Clusters as souvenirs.

New Orleans, Louisiana

french quarter, typical house

It's always the perfect time to visit The Big Easy . And, as the city that proudly claims to have invented the cocktail, the bar scene here is second to none. Make a beeline for The Sazerac Restaurant to sample the namesake cocktail, of course, but don’t skimp on the Ramos Gin Fizzes either; they require a solid 12 minutes of shaking. No trip here is complete without dinner at New Orleans grande dame Brennan’s , famed for inventing the flashy (and incredibly delicious) flaming bananas foster. Boutique Henry Howard Hotel offers the perfect respite from the crowds, as does the NOPSI Hotel 's soothing rooftop. Or, you can't go wrong with the centrally-located and ever-glam Ritz-Carlton .

Palm Springs, California

golf course in palm springs, california

Coachella and other music festivals may have put this spot on the map, but this scenic area in Southern California is pretty heavenly year-round (and, with 350 days of sunshine, it’s especially enticing during blustery winter months). Architecture buffs will love Villa Royale , a boutique hotel with Mission Revival and Mid-Century Modern touches all over. Workshop Kitchen + Bar is perfect for group dinners, with its farm-to-table small plates like fried cauliflower steak and wood-fired pizzas. End the night at its sister bar Truss & Twine , whose menu includes a whole selection of tasty tiki drinks.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

While parts of this Caribbean island are still recovering from Hurricane Maria, the bustling capital of San Juan is back in business (and eager for tourists to return). Beach-loving pals should book a room at the Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort , which offers beginning surfing, stand-up paddling, and zip-lining. While exploring old San Juan, make sure to stop in at El Jibarito for excellent renditions of classic Puerto Rican dishes like mofongo with camarones al ajillo (that’s mashed plantains with shrimp in garlic sauce). Finish the night at La Factoria , a speakeasy that’s been voted one of the top 50 bars in the world. (Note: Travel to and from Puerto Rico is currently permitted as long as as visitors comply with all necessary health and safety requirements; for more information, visit discoverpuertorico.com .)

Lisbon, Portugal

Just like San Francisco, Lisbon, Portugal is famous for its historic tram lines. Built more than 2,000 years ago, St. George's Castle is one of the most visible landmarks of Lisbon's historic center. From it, you can see the Tagus river and the city from a whole different perspective. Take in the nightlife in the city's famous Bairro Alton district. Go down to the beachfront Cascias , about 30 minutes away from Lisbon, and enjoy some fresh seafood. (Note: While Portugal is currently closed to American tourists, it is expected to reopen this summer ; for the most up-to-date information, check with the U.S. Embassy & Consulate in Portugal .)

Amsterdam, Netherlands

(Note: U.S. Citizens are not currently permitted to enter the Netherlands; for reopening updates, check with the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in the Netherlands .)

Florence, Italy

dome, holy places, landmark, roof, sky, building, architecture, dome, town, historic site,

If you and your friends are fans of pasta, gelato (and who isn't?), shopping (check out the Basilica di San Lorenzo !) and history, then this is a top destination. Take a bus or walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo to see the entire city center of Florence from a whole different view. This plaza provides a spectacular look at the Duomo . (Note: While Italy is currently closed to American tourists, it is expected to reopen this summer ; for the most up-to-date information, check with the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Italy .)

Marrakesh, Morocco

sky, town, urban area, city, landmark, human settlement, hill, tree, metropolitan area, tourism,

Okay, so it's likely a longer flight than most of these destinations, and definitely a splurge but certainly a memorable experience. Take in the landscapes at the Jardin Majorelle and then make your way to the YSL museum to learn all about the creator of the fashion brand and his ties to Morocco. Want to feel like a true celebrity? Grab a drink at the famous La Mamounia Hotel and snap a picture in any one of their Insta-famous mosaic-tile rooms. (Note: American tourists are allowed to enter Morocco as long as they meet certain requirements, like confirmed hotel or travel agency reservations and a negative PCR COVID-19 test; for more information, check with the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Morocco .)

There are several campsites, cabins, and lodges available for your stay so you never have to leave the area. If you do want a break from the beach, the park's nearby Hoh Rain Forest is a great place to hike — its lush, green foliage will be a stark contrast to the rocky shores just a few miles away.

The Hamptons, New York

If you're a New Yorker looking for a beach weekend getaway, the Hamptons is a natural choice. East Hampton, Southampton, and Montauk are among the most popular destinations, and they're all worth visiting, thanks to their beautiful hotels, great shopping, delicious food, and of course, pristine beaches. Laguna Beach, California

Although there are several great beaches in Los Angeles , sometimes you just want to get away. An hour's drive from downtown L.A., Laguna Beach feels like a vacation from the city without having to go too far. Book a stay at the five-star Montage Laguna Beach or The Ranch at Laguna Beach for a luxurious weekend away.

Saugatuck, Michigan

Plus, with outdoor activities like kayaking, horseback riding, sailing, and hiking, there's really something for everyone here. Try The Hotel Saugatuck , a charming boutique property in the Historic District, for your stay.

Hiking, swimming, surfing, birding, and kayaking are among the many other activities visitors can enjoy in this park. Of course, when it comes to lounging on the sand, you can't beat the Cape Cod National Seashore , which offers six swimming beaches. With stunning views of the islands and ocean, plus plenty of places to stop for a slice of Key lime pie, this is truly the ultimate beach road trip , and it can be done in a weekend if you live in or around Miami.

Once you arrive in Key West, home to some of the prettiest beaches in Florida, you can enjoy the shore, visit the southernmost point in the continental United States, or check out the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory . Get a room at The Gates Hotel Key West for a bright, airy escape with a rum bar. Finish the day with a seafood dinner and sunset cruise, and you've got a perfect weekend.

Tybee Island, Georgia

Tybee Island is the closest beach destination to Atlanta , so it's the perfect weekend escape when you want a break from the city traffic. There are plenty of beautiful Georgia beaches to choose from, but Tybee is great because it has something for everyone. North Beach is a popular spot to enjoy the sand and surf, but Back River Beach is the place to go if you want to avoid the crowds. Plus, downtown Savannah is just a short drive away from Tybee Island, so you'll have tons of great restaurants, museums, shops, and bars within reach, as well as historic lodging options like the Mansion on Forsyth Park .

At the end of the day, you can enjoy the gulf-front views from your room at the Grand Galvez or take a ghost tour to learn about the area's history.

With more than 33 championship golf courses, this is the ultimate place to go for a golf vacation .

Jersey Shore, New Jersey

Bordeaux travel guide: how to have the perfect weekend in the wine capital

Where to eat, what to see and the places to stay in the laidback but elegant old port city renowned for its world-class vintages

Sipping a crisp glass of local cremant (essentially champagne, but made outside the Champagne region) from the top-floor Belvedere of the Cité du Vin – a spot from which you can also drink in views of Bordeaux’s gritty former wet docks ( bassin s à flot ), the Garonne river and the monuments of the nearby city centre – I rue the fact that so few contemporary buildings have been as well thought out as this one.

Opened in 2016, Bordeaux’s ‘City of Wine’ makes a very bold statement indeed, but most importantly it’s eco-friendly, built from sustainable materials, and though hyper-modern, it’s also perfectly in tune with its place, with a gorgeously curvaceous shape that evokes both vines and the flow of the river alongside it. Even its mellow golden brown colour was chosen to harmonise with the limestone buildings of the rest of this graceful old river port with its rather genteel feel.

But what’s inside this wine museum is equally impressive - a truly state-of-the-art, sensory journey through the history and science of wine around the world in the form of a brilliantly conceived permanent exhibition, plus the option of signing up for tasting workshops and other events.

And then after all that, there’s its wine shop, Latitude20 – and what a wine shop, also gorgeously designed, with a choice of 800 labels from more than 70 countries and a team of specialist sommeliers to guide you through them. With prices from a ridiculously reasonable €5, it seemed rude not to leave without a few decent bottles to take home with me, but I did insist on them being from the Bordeaux region rather than Turkmenistan or Tahiti.

A much less visible but just as striking modern architectural masterpiece can be found at Château Les Carmes Haut Brion , a vineyard that in 2016 commissioned a new metal-clad wine cellar from designer Philippe Starck. Resting on the bed of the River Peugue and blending into the landscape thanks to the reflections flitting across its surface, it resembles a ship’s bow, in a nod to Bordeaux’s seafaring history. You can visit by private guided tour – bookable directly or via the wonderful concierge at the delicious new Mondrian Bordeaux Les Carmes hotel, which was also designed by Philippe Starck.

The Château is the only vineyard within the city limits, which makes it easy to visit (it’s just a few tram stops from the centre).

Bordeaux is a foodie's dream, with a special focus on fresh Atlantic seafood including oysters from nearby Arcachon. One of the best places to try more or less everything on offer here is the Halles de Bacalan , right beside the Cité du Vin. Here, you can sit within the renovated old market building or out on the dockside and munch on anything from ceviche to Reunion Island specialities and the city’s best canel é s – gooey Bordeaux specialities with soft centres and caramelised crusts, scented by rum and vanilla and shaped like corks.

fresh oysters, streetfood

From Les Halles and the Cité du Vin you can stroll all the way along the river to the city centre. The first part is a Promenade Verte (Green Promenade) planted with trees and other greenery as a refuge for biodiversity. From here, there’s a long, wide swathe of riverbank path lined with tempting restaurants and cafes with terraces facing the water, perfect for watching the cyclists, rollerbladers, skateboarders, e-scooterers and strollers go by. Bordeaux originally turned its back on its once-dirty river (the houses lining it had their front doors on the other side), so it’s lovely to see how it has become the focal point of a modern-day outdoorsy lifestyle.

The shopping

From chic pharmacies full of French beauty products you can’t get back home to the classic department store Galeries Lafayette, and of course wine shops galore, Bordeaux is a fantastic place to shop - so if you fly here, make sure to book hold luggage.

The best spot is Chartrons, which calls to mind the hip Marais district of Paris in its mix of bourgeois and bohemian shops. An ancient (14th-century) neighbourhood built around Chartreux abbey and lining part of the river, it’s especially good for antiques, vintage and bric-à-brac boutiques and concept stores, plus inviting wine cellars, many clustered on Rue Notre-Dame street (this was once Bordeaux’s wine merchants’ district).

aerial cityscape view on the old town of bordeaux city with st andrew cathedral during a sunny day in france high quality photography

A weekend must while in Bordeaux is an amble around Chartrons market out on the quays each Sunday – the perfect excuse for a riverside picnic. And Chartrons is another great place to eat in Bordeaux, packed with tea salons, tapas bars, dim sum restaurants, oyster stalls and patisseries – especially around the Place du Marché de Chartrons.

The culture

Bordeaux’s thrilling blend of the classic and the contemporary continues in its array of inspiring cultural venues. In Chartrons, M.U.R (Modulable, Urban, Reactive) showcases modern urban art, while the CAPC Musée d'Art Contemporain is a lovely space for ogling works by present-day artists, and MECA (Museum of Decorative Arts and Design) has both contemporary and ancient works, and everything in-between.

Back by the Bassin à Flots, the Bassins des Lumières has repurposed a former Nazi submarine base into the world’s largest digital art centre. Lastly, the Bordeaux Musée des Beaux-Arts focuses on the centuries and movements culminating in 20th-century Modernism.

Meanwhile, there’s more for oenophiles in the Museum of Wine and Trade, and history galore in Bordeaux’s Maritime History Museum, the Musée Mer Marine, and the Museum of Aquitaine. In short, much much more than a weekend’s worth – but with Bordeaux being so easy to get to from the UK, including by Eurostar , that’s all good reason to keep coming back for more.

The new hotels

Opened in November 2023, Mondrian Bordeaux Les Carmes oozes cosy chic in the north of the Chartrons district, in a former winery with a splendid neo-Gothic stone façade. Inside, it’s all soft earthy hues and poetic France-meets-Far East decor by Philippe Starck, who was picked for the architectural design and artistic direction after designing the iconic wine cellar at the Château les Carmes Haut Brion.

You can taste that vineyard ’s best vintages, and many other regional and global wines, in the hotel’s fabulous destination restaurant, Morimoto Bordeaux – the fêted Japanese chef’s only outpost in Europe to date. But make sure you don’t miss out on the superb signature cocktails either - a standout is the Zoo Kimoni with Sakurao gin, pickle juice, Szechuan pepper syru and lemon – or the wonderful choice of sakes. For eats, the French-inflected Japanese fare includes maki, sushi, sashimi, signature dishes such as lacquered duck, and Arcachon oysters, and if you like you can sit up at the sushi bar and get an eyeful of the chefs in action.

bordeaux weekend travel guide

The perfect urban retreat, Mondrian Bordeaux Les Carmes also has the prettiest of courtyard gardens, fireplaces to snuggle up by in the colder months, and a cosseting gem of a holistic, vegan Codage Paris spa, with a sauna, hamman and lounger-lined swimming pool.

For local style on a slightly lower budget, Hotel Indigo Bordeaux is another new opening in the Chartrons district – this time more centrally, down by the CAPC Musée d'Art Contemporain.

BOOK A STAY

Its rooftop bar and restaurant has a lovely wraparound terrace popular for sundowners, while the rooms and suites have been decorated to evoke the nearby seaside resort of Arcachon: some are in nautical and marine blues, some have the peachy glow of Atlantic sunsets, and some are in the dusky yellow of the Dune du Pilat, Europe’s highest sand dune.

bordeaux weekend travel guide

Or another new addition to the Bordeaux hotel scene, the eco-friendly Renaissance Bordeaux has an interesting location overlooking the Halles de Bacalan, and from its top-floor pool you can ogle the Cité du Vin building as you swim.

a large room with a large glass wall and a large pool

Rooms and suites have vast windows and the feel of spacious ships’ cabins, especially if you plump for one with views down over the old docks, and the rooftop space (which includes a bar and a very good Italian restaurant with an expansive terrace) also hosts community events such as vintage and crafts fairs.

The Maya Train Will Get You to All of Yucatán’s Best Spots. But Not Yet.

In December, the train began running on its first route through Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. On a five-day journey a few months later, the author encountered enthusiasm, and scheduling hiccups.

A singular train track, with one short train, cuts through a lush deep forest.

By Elisabeth Malkin

Elisabeth Malkin has been visiting the Yucatán Peninsula for three decades.

I stepped off the platform at the gleaming new Maxcanú train station, eager to see the magnificent Maya archaeological site of Uxmal. All I needed was a taxi to take me there, a trip of about 30 miles away.

There are no taxis, said the stationmaster, as we stood on the polished limestone floors of the high-ceilinged station, which was cool and breezy despite the brilliant late-morning sun outside. And I was the third person in two weeks to get off at Maxcanú expecting to reach Uxmal, he said.

I was midway through a five-day trip to explore the brand-new Maya Train and several of its destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico . Designed to run 965 miles (1,554 kilometers) around a loop of 34 stations when completed, the train will whisk passengers in cool comfort through colonial cities, archaeological sites, splashy resorts and tropical forests.

Now I was stunned. Wrangling a taxi has never been a problem in Mexico. But the drivers gathered in the main square of Maxcanú offered only beat-up vans that hopscotch through small towns, where I might or might not find a taxi to Uxmal. The next van was leaving in 45 minutes.

Yucatán’s layers of history have long held me spellbound. During earlier car trips, I have clambered up deserted Maya temples and palaces, stepped into the cool naves of massive 16th-century churches and visited restored haciendas, testaments of the ostentation — and hardship — of the peninsula’s 19th-century plantation economy. Traveling by train, I thought, would allow me to steep myself in more of that history.

But as I found in Maxcanú, a train won’t necessarily get you to where you want to go.

During my February trip, I traveled on the only route then available, an east-west leg that opened in December and runs from Cancún to Mérida, and then south through the port city of Campeche to the Maya site of Palenque (a short route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen opened last month, with three trains a day). I encountered scheduling confusion, unfinished stations and a dearth of trains — just two operating daily each way between Cancún and Campeche, and only one to Palenque. Overnight sleepers and special dining trains seem years away.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considers the Maya Train his showcase development project, and wants to inaugurate the rest of the train before he leaves office on October 1. Based on my experience, that goal seems elusive.

A $29-billion route through the jungle

I started my journey in Cancún, where in the pre-dawn gloom the station hovered like a glowing spaceship. An attendant scanned the ticket I had bought online and a half-dozen more pointed me toward my tourist-class car, which was about a quarter full. I planned to go to Campeche, about 300 miles away, stopping once each day. At 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) an hour, the train covers the route in about six hours, the same as a car. (When construction is complete, the train’s speed should increase to 160 kilometers an hour.)

The car’s wide windows looked out at a wall of low jungle. The blue-green seats were comfortable and there was ample space between the rows. I bought a very good cappuccino at the snack bar, but declined the plastic-wrapped sandwiches. The rest of the merchandise was fruit cups, milk boxes and junk food.

The train will ultimately cost much more than the $29 billion budgeted so far, and it’s not the first time ambitious planners have alighted on the region. Cancún was once a tiny fishing village, selected half a century ago as a tourist hub. Last year 10 million international tourists flew into its airport, more than the airports of Mexico City, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta combined.

But uncontrolled growth has stressed the Caribbean coast’s fragile environment. The Maya Train, scientists warn , will push those problems south, threatening the area’s water supply, its unique system of underground limestone caves and its vast nature reserves.

Mr. López Obrador has charged ahead, handing the train over to the military , and arguing that it will spread Cancún’s wealth and attract new visitors. Mexico received more than 42 million overseas tourists last year and they spent almost $31 billion .

Local governments see an opportunity. “The train will allow people to disperse throughout the peninsula,” said Michelle Fridman, the tourism secretary for Yucatán state, which promotes dozens of attractions far beyond highlights like Mérida and Chichén Itzá .

Now that the train is operating, transport companies will begin to connect stations with lesser-known sites nearby, she said.

It’s fair to ask whether the train is the most effective way to develop the peninsula’s tourism. Tour companies already run trips to many sites from major cities, which are well served by buses. Driving a rental car through most of the area is considered safe , according to U.S. State Department travel guidance .

Route of Mexico’s Maya Train

Canceled trip.

It took two hours (and one time-zone change) to reach Valladolid, a colonial city of handsome streets and ancient churches, where I bought the rest of my tickets at the station. A tourist-class ticket from Cancún to Valladolid costs 472 pesos (around $28) for foreigners and 355 pesos (around $21) for Mexicans. First class, with wider seats, costs 755.50 pesos and 566.50 pesos, and discounts are available for older travelers and residents of the five states along the train’s route. (A first-class bus from downtown Cancún to Valladolid costs between 222 and 344 pesos, depending on the time of day, and takes half an hour longer.)

It was impossible to run the new Maya Train tracks into dense city centers and the Valladolid station, like the rest, was outside the urban core. A waiting bus took disembarking passengers downtown, a 15-minute ride for 35 pesos.

That day I toured Ek Balam , the site of a ninth-century Maya kingdom that is dominated by a 100-foot palace distinguished by a facade of carvings depicting winged warriors, stylized animal features and geometric patterns bordered by giant fangs. Admission to the site includes entry to the X-Canché cenote, one of thousands of limestone sinkholes that were sacred to the Maya.

Later that afternoon, I was wandering through the Museum of Ethnic Clothing, a private collection of traditional dress, embroidery and hats, when a WhatsApp message from the ticket office blinked on my phone. My train scheduled for the following day was canceled.

I decided to deal with the problem in the morning and enjoy the city. As I wandered past the antique shops and boutique hotels of the elegant Calzada de los Frailes, it was clear that Valladolid’s tourism, and the infrastructure to handle it, was well established. The Maya Train is simply an alternative way to reach a city that tourists discovered years ago.

‘We’re on the Tren Maya!’

In the morning, I found that my train had not been canceled, but the station for which I had a ticket, Tixkokob, was closed. I got off instead one stop earlier at Izamal, known for its ocher streets and the giant Franciscan convent of San Antonio de Padua, built atop the ruins of a pyramid.

During the 90-minute ride, I heard widespread enthusiasm among fellow travelers who expressed a willingness to give the train time to work out the kinks. “We’re an experiment,” said Oliva Escobedo Ochoa, 64, who was vacationing from her home in central Mexico.

Leticia Iliassich, 57, who is Mexican, was traveling with her Croatian husband along with relatives from Mexico and Croatia. They had initially been scheduled on an earlier train to Mérida that had been canceled. “We knew that it was a new project,” she said. “We don’t mind.”

The group had already sent a video to friends declaring, “We’re on the Tren Maya!”

At the Izamal station I hitched a 15-minute ride into the town center with a man who had asked me to take his photo alongside the train and his father. From there I negotiated a taxi to Hacienda San Lorenzo Aké, a working hacienda that still turns the fiber from an agave plant called henequén into coarse rope. Global demand for henequén, known as Yucatán’s “green gold,” brought fantastic wealth to the region in the mid-19th century, speckling the peninsula with more than 1,000 haciendas. ( Many are now sumptuous hotels.)

Where geometry, nature and the divine merge

It was during my third day that I found myself stuck in Maxcanú, after a 90-minute train ride from Izamal. The stationmaster, an army captain, offered me a ride to Uxmal, just as he had to the stranded tourists before me.

Eying Uxmal’s 4 p.m. final ticket sale, I accepted.

My situation made it clear just how distant the Maya Train’s promises are for tourists seeking to explore more of Yucatán. In time, that will change, said Ms. Fridman, the tourism secretary. “The idea is to have more hotels along the train line,” she said. “That will happen little by little.”

But Uxmal , among the most stunning of the Maya sites, made up for the inconvenience. Uxmal’s grand buildings are faced with intricate decorative masks as well as friezes in which geometry, nature and the divine merge. New plaques at each structure offer detailed information in English and Spanish, part of the government’s investment in improving displays at Maya sites for the train project.

Most tourists either take day trips by car or bus to Uxmal from Mérida or stay at one of three nearby hotels. As I finished dinner at my hotel, the dining room began to fill up: 47 Polish tourists had arrived.

Panama hats and a cramped van

My plan for the day was to go by taxi to Bécal, a town where Panama hats are woven in limestone caves to keep the fibers soft, and then pick up the afternoon train in nearby Calkiní for the port city of Campeche.

But I spent so much time watching the hat-making demonstration and then fitting my new hat and buying gifts that we set off with little time to reach the station. To my chagrin, I missed the train, the last one of the day.

On Calkiní’s central square, I found a van that was leaving for Campeche. Cost: 65 pesos. Time: about 1 hour and 20 minutes, similar to what I would have spent on the train. Of course, I was trapped in a cramped seat and had to listen to the driver’s choice of sentimental ballads, but I was dropped off in downtown Campeche, close to my hotel.

The next day, I toured the Museum of Maya Archaeology , an expertly curated collection that included haunting jade funeral masks, glyphs and delicate ceramic figures.

José Madrigal, 45, an engineer from Fremont, Calif., was trying to make Maya pottery interesting for his twin sons. The boys had just turned 5 and their birthday present had been a ride on the Maya Train. “They love trains,” Mr. Madrigal said. Then the family moved on, keeping up a brisk clip through the museum. They had another train to catch.

Should you take the train?

Yes, if you are traveling between larger stations. The train also offers a way to get to Palenque, which is harder to reach and has roads with security concerns. Travelers can stow bicycles on board.

To see train times, check the destinations on the website . You cannot buy tickets online more than a week in advance. But when you finally board, the ride is smooth — and the coffee is excellent.

In the evening, check out the "Lights in the Sky" illumination of SkyBridge Michigan − the world's longest timber-towered suspension bridge – where guests can walk through this sensory experience surrounded by more than 150,000 twinkling lights. There are multiple lodging options at this top Michigan ski resort , including Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa, which sits steps from the Avalanche Bay water park; the European-inspired Chalet Edelweiss; and the Clocktower Lodge, with views of the slopes and an ice skating rink. To top it off, dining options are aplenty.

Springfield, Illinois

Lincoln's Tomb and monument in Springfield, Illinois.

As the capital of the state called the "Land of Lincoln," Springfield is home to many historic sites honoring the nation's 16th president, including the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum; the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, where the family lived from 1844 to 1861; and the Lincoln Tomb, which was built using donations from around the U.S.

In Illinois' capital city, visitors can also explore Old State Capitol State Historic Site and the Illinois State Museum; consider scheduling a free tour of the Illinois State Capitol building. Architecture enthusiasts will want to tour the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Dana-Thomas House, or drive along part of the original Route 66 with a stop at the must-see Illinois State Fairgrounds Route 66 Experience (open 365 days a year).

For accommodations, take your pick of chain hotels and vacation rentals, or you can book a stay at the Inn at 835 boutique hotel for a daily continental breakfast and a location within walking distance of many historic sites.

Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum: Atlanta

Set amid 35 acres of landscaped grounds in Atlanta, the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum teaches visitors about the longest living president. You'll learn about his early life, his time in office and his post-White House accomplishments – including his Nobel Peace Prize, which is on display. Go to the rotunda to watch the "Day in the Life of the President" presentation on 13-foot-tall screens, walk into a cabin-style exhibit outlining the Camp David meetings and step into a full-size replica of the Oval Office. There are unique artifacts on display, like gifts from foreign heads of state. Museumgoers can virtually travel the world with the Carters to monitor elections and fight diseases via an interactive map table.

Plan to stay at The Candler Hotel Atlanta, Curio Collection by Hilton , which occupies a beaux-arts structure built by Coca-Cola founder Asa Griggs Candler. Check out a variety of family-friendly attractions in Atlanta , including Zoo Atlanta (currently home to the only giant pandas in the U.S.), the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coca-Cola.

If you want to venture farther afield to more presidential sites, make your way to Carter's hometown of Plains (about 145 miles south of Atlanta) to the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park and the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm. Or, head to Warm Springs (about 75 miles south of Atlanta) to the Little White House Historic Site, where FDR lived before becoming president. He found relief for his polio symptoms in the spring waters, and today the house where he died is preserved. There's also a museum displaying the "Unfinished Portrait" of him, a 1930s radio playing his Fireside Chats and a 1938 Ford convertible with hand controls.

Nashville, Tennessee

Music City makes an ideal long weekend destination. Reserve a hotel or vacation rental downtown to be within walking distance of museums like the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Johnny Cash Museum, and the National Museum of African American Music. Peruse more than 30 eateries and three stages with live music in the Assembly Food Hall, then tour the Ryman Auditorium to learn about the building and the beginnings of the Grand Ole Opry. On certain nights, you can make your way to the Opry House (about 10 miles northeast of the city) for a live Opry performance. Or, take a stroll along Broadway and follow your ears into a honky-tonk that suits your music taste.

If you'd like to infuse your three-day holiday weekend with some presidential history in Nashville , head to Andrew Jackson's Hermitage. Explore the museum, log cabin, authentically preserved mansion and on-site slave sites where visitors learn about Jackson's life and times. Venture further afield to Columbia to tour the Federal-style ancestral home of James K. Polk.

Key West, Florida

The Harry S. Truman Little White House in Key West, Florida.

If you're seeking a relaxed vibe by the sea, head to Key West . Amid the laid-back atmosphere, you can stroll Duval Street to find a bar where you can spend the day sipping a margarita, or perhaps plan a snorkeling excursion to see marine life. If you want to add some history to your weekend getaway, visit the Harry S. Truman Little White House – the only presidential site in Florida. During his presidency, Truman spent 175 days at his winter house, which was originally built in 1890 as a house for naval officers. When it's time to turn in for the night, check in to one of the top hotels in Key West .

Washington, D.C.

Exterior of the White House.

What could be more presidential than visiting where the president actually lives? While White House tours are free, they must be scheduled between 21 and 90 days in advance with your member of Congress. But there are plenty of things to see in Washington, D.C. , beyond the White House, including the National Mall, the Smithsonian museums (which are all free) and the U.S. Capitol building.

Families with young readers (or anyone who loves children's books) will want to visit the newly opened "Building Stories" exhibit, which showcases environments and designs from popular children's books at the National Building Museum. Next, head outside for a stroll around the Tidal Basin to see the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. There's plenty of top D.C. hotel options ranging from budget-friendly to luxury, so choose your accommodations based on price and neighborhood. If you're a fan of JFK and Jackie, take a taxi over to Martin's Tavern in Georgetown to dine or grab a pint in the restaurant where the couple were engaged.

To delve into the life and times of the first president, head to George Washington's Mount Vernon. Located about 20 miles south of D.C. in Virginia, this historic site offers visitors the chance to tour George Washington's estate to see where and how he lived. The museum and visitor center have interactive exhibits, short films and numerous displays. Travelers can also attend the daily wreath-laying ceremony at the tomb of the Washingtons.

Williamsburg, Virginia

A statue of Thomas Jefferson in Colonial Williamsburg.

Walk in the footsteps of the Founding Fathers in Williamsburg , as well as nearby Jamestown and Yorktown. Immerse yourself in living history in Colonial Williamsburg, where actors in costume as townspeople, shopkeepers and enslaved laborers interact with visitors, who can tour the gardens, eat 18th-century cuisine at taverns and shop for authentic goods.

You can easily spend the entire long weekend exploring this family-friendly destination. Consider staying the night amid the historical village at the Williamsburg Inn . Or, if the kids are looking to let out some energy, book a stay at the Great Wolf Lodge Williamsburg , which boasts an indoor water park , dining and more.

George H.W. Bush Presidential Library & Museum: College Station, Texas

From his time as a WWII Navy pilot to his days in office and life as a private citizen, there's plenty that guests of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum can learn about the life and experiences of the 41st president and first lady. The "Symbols of the Presidency" exhibit features a presidential limousine, painted portraits and a 3-foot crystal presidential seal.

Feel like the president in the replicas of Camp David, the Situation Room and the Oval Office – where you can have your photo taken sitting in the "Seat of Power." Amid photos, videos and documents, you'll find a 1947 Studebaker, a section of the Berlin Wall and more. There's also an exhibit highlighting first lady Barbara Bush's advocacy for literacy, volunteerism and AIDS awareness. Complete your experience with a visit to the Bush family gravesite.

Plan to stay at The George , a luxury boutique hotel in Century Square surrounded by shops, restaurants and entertainment options. While in town, be sure to explore the campus of Texas A&M University, referred to as "Aggieland," where you can book a tour of Kyle Field for a behind-the-scenes football stadium experience and enjoy the outdoors at The Gardens at Texas A&M.

Beaver Creek Resort, Colorado

Beaver Creek Village at dusk with ski slopes in the foreground.

If the mountains are calling, head to Beaver Creek. Situated less than 15 miles west of Vail , this premiere ski destination in Colorado first opened in 1980 and is home to a highly regarded ski and snowboard school – ideal for families with young children hitting the slopes for the first time. Within the resort, there are three villages with a variety of shopping and dining options. During Presidents Day Weekend 2024, adult travelers can attend the Frites Artois on-mountain culinary experience (in partnership with beer brand Stella Artois). On Saturday of the long weekend, there's a fun fest with caricature drawings and games for all ages.

In terms of presidential history, Ford was at the Beaver Creek Resort groundbreaking in 1977 and the opening of the resort in 1980. He and his family owned a home in Beaver Creek, which was dubbed the "winter White House," and Ford spent a lot of time in the region after he left politics.

Cityscape view of Las Vegas during sunset.

When you're looking to maximize a long weekend, Las Vegas offers around-the-clock excitement. Whether you want to go to the lavish Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace for brunch, soak up some rays by the pool, unwind at a five-star spa, dine at a world-renowned restaurant or gamble all night long, Vegas can accommodate. For entertainment, the best Vegas shows include everything from Cirque du Soleil productions to musical residencies to comedy shows. Check out The Sphere Experience for a two-hour immersive technological journey at one of the newest attractions on the Strip. In terms of the best Las Vegas resorts and hotels , a variety of options await, depending on your budget and interests.

If you're in need of some time away from the glitz and glamour, consider a day trip to the Hoover Dam (originally called the Boulder Dam), where FDR gave a dedication speech in 1935. Or, venture on one of the best Grand Canyon bus tours from Vegas .

Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum: Simi Valley, California

The Air Force One Pavilion at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum.

To experience what a president's life aboard Air Force One is like, head to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. Set on a mountaintop with views of the surrounding valleys and Pacific Ocean, this museum dedicated to the 40th president showcases his early years, life at his ranch, the inauguration and the assassination attempt through its exhibits. There's also a replica of Reagan's Oval Office and other immersive exhibits.

Allow plenty of time in the not-to-be-missed Air Force One Pavilion: You can board the actual Boeing 747 used by seven U.S. presidents, see Lyndon Johnson's Marine One helicopter and check out the Ronald Reagan Pub (a gift from his ancestral village in Ireland). The Presidents Day Celebration includes a performance by the Los Angeles Police Concert Band, president and first lady lookalikes, crafts, storytelling and activities for all ages. Visitors can also see a section of the Berlin Wall on display and pay their respects at the graves of the president and first lady.

In this Southern California destination, travelers may want to consider basing themselves for the weekend by the beaches of Ventura or Santa Monica, or exploring the iconic sites in Hollywood and Los Angeles , which are all located within a 50-mile radius.

Way Day 2024

We’re springing into sales this season. First, it was Amazon’s inaugural Big Spring Sale in March. Now, as April is in full bloom, Wayfair is joining the soiree of sales for shoppers to score.

Here at Post Wanted, we’ve been following the retailer’s flash sales and furniture happenings for as long as we can remember. Typically, Wayfair hosts its much-anticipated Way Day event at least once a year, with confirmed dates exclusively shared with The Post.

For the first time ever, Wayfair is hosting Way Day during the first week of May , with previews beginning in late April. Whether you’re shopping for a sectional sofa or a brand-new coffee table , Wayfair, as its commercial sings, has just what we need .

RELATED : Best places to buy outdoor patio furniture

To help equip you with all there is to know about Way Day this year and scoring the best furniture deals of the season, we compiled everything we know so far. After all, it isn’t our first rodeo, and we’re just as jazzed about sprucing up our humble abodes as you are.

What is Way Day?

Way Day is Wayfair’s biggest sales event of the year. Prices are typically up to 80% off across the lion’s share of its categories, from furniture and kitchen to outdoor and decor.

In essence, Way Day is Wayfair’s grand foray into the world of retailer-hosted sales, much like Amazon’s full-fledged Prime Day event each year. The first Way Day hit the e-commerce market in 2018 — and we’ve been shopping and reporting on what to buy and how to take full advantage of the event ever since.

How long is Way Day?

Way Day is typically a two-day event, though the Post Wanted team anticipates there will be a roster of exceptional deals during its preview, which typically takes place the week before the event officially kicks off. Even better, Wayfair treats all of its customers to free shipping for the entirety of Way Day.

Does Way Day have good deals?

Way Day is home to Wayfair’s largest deals of the year, with almost everything on sale. This is the ideal time to pick up not only furniture pieces but other costly items, like coffee makers , mattresses and vacuums .

In recent years, we’ve noticed especially impressive markdowns on sleeper sofas , outdoor fire pits and pool lounge chairs . Pro tip: you’ll also want to explore a specific item’s product page to unlock maximum savings. Sometimes, Wayfair offers different prices based on the color, pattern or size of the item.

Oh, and to optimize your sales-scoring potential, pay special attention to Wayfair’s in-house brands like AllModern , Birch Lane and Joss & Main . But, you can still find wonderful deals from popular third-party brands like Beautyrest , KitchenAid , Kohler and more.
