Syllabus updates

We revise our qualifications regularly to make sure that they continue to meet the needs of learners, schools and higher education institutions around the world and reflect current thinking. We have consulted and worked with subject experts to review this syllabus, and made some changes to make it clearer for teachers.

What are the main changes to the syllabus?

To support teachers and learners, we have:

  • updated the subject content to reflect current developments in each of the topic areas, adding and removing some sub-topics
  • developed subject content for Paper 2 to make it clear about what should be taught.

What are the main changes to the assessment?

  • Paper 1 and Paper 2 are now equally weighted at both Cambridge International AS and A Level.
  • We have reduced the number of marks for Paper 1 to 75 marks and the duration to 2 hours.
  • We have revised the mark schemes for all papers.

When do these changes take place?

The updated syllabus is for examination from June 2024 onwards. Examinations are available in June and November. Please see the 2024-2026 syllabus above for full details.

Argentina and spain compete for fc barcelona’s ‘new messi’.

Pedro 'Pedrito' Juarez has already drawn comparisons to Lionel Messi.

Argentina and Spain's football federations (the AFA and RFEF) will compete for a 10-year-old in Barca's La Masia academy, Pedro Juarez, who is already being dubbed the 'new Messi' in some corners.

Pedro is registered with Barca's U10's in the Catalan youth leagues, and has scored 38 goals in 26 matches so far this season.

Born in the Argentine city of Salta, his family arrived in Barcelona in 2020 and it didn't take long for the number 4 to attract the attention of Blaugrana scouts.

'Pedrito', as he is often called, went viral a year later with a sensational solo goal where he dribbled the length of the pitch.

The strike earned him not just comparison to his idol Lionel Messi, but also a sponsorship deal with Nike Nike .

As the youngster continues to progress, he has already caught the attention of those back in his homeland as shown in comments made by Argentine commentator Jorge D'Alessandro that Mundo Deportivo relayed .

One Of The Best Robin Williams Comedies Ever Made Lands On Netflix Today

Drake and kendrick lamar feud timeline lamar drops second diss track 6 16 in la, outlander finally comes to netflix with an incredible new season.

"There is an Argentinian boy in Barcelona, from the 2014 age category, of whom I have already notified the AFA to warn them [so that they won't] take him away from us," D'Alessandro said, in a dig at the RFEF.

"He has a knack for receiving the ball and a peripheral view of the game. A decision-making ability and [a way] to verify at all times what is the ideal pass, which for those of us who have great criteria to observe makes him a player of the future," D'Alessandro added.

As the analyst indicated, Pedrito is highly likely to become the subject of a tug of war between the country of his birth and current country of residence just like Messi in his younger years.

In recent times, we have seen a similar case with another La Masia pearl in Lamine Yamal, who has also drawn comparisons to Messi but chose to play for Spain as opposed to his father's country Morocco.

Back to Pedrito, Mundo Deportivo explains that there are already plans from the AFA to call him up to their national team's U-15s as a way of claiming his services early.

Ultimately, however, there is an awful lot of road ahead in that the prodigy first has to turn professional and then make three senior appearances for a national team before it can keep him permanently as per FIFA rules.

Court blocks Louisiana's congressional map with a second majority-Black district

politics political vote ballot voters

A federal court on Tuesday blocked Louisiana from using a congressional map signed into law this year that had been redrawn to include a second majority-Black district.

In a 2-1 vote, the three-judge panel of the U.S. District Court in Monroe, Louisiana, found that Senate Bill 8, which provided for the redistricting of congressional districts in the state, violated a clause in the 14th Amendment that ensures equal protection under the Constitution.

The case is likely to end up before the Supreme Court in another test of the Voting Rights Act .

"Having considered the testimony and evidence at trial, the arguments of counsel, and the applicable law, we conclude that District 6 of SB8 violates the Equal Protection Clause," District Judges Robert R. Summerhays and David C. Joseph, both appointees of former President Donald Trump, wrote in the court's opinion .

The judges said the state was not to use the map "in any future elections."

A hearing was set for May 6 to discuss next steps.

In a statement, Paul Hurd, an attorney for the voters opposing the map, expressed gratitude "that the Court ruled in favor of the twelve courageous Plaintiffs who challenged the new districting plan."

In their lawsuit challenging the redistricting map, the plaintiffs argued that "the State engaged in textbook racial gerrymandering" and that it violated civil rights protections under the 14th and 15th amendments when it drew a second majority-Black district to comply with an earlier court order.

The Louisiana secretary of state's office has set May 15 as the deadline for the state’s congressional map to be finalized for use in this year’s elections.

It declined to comment on Tuesday's ruling.

The map was redrawn, and Gov. Jeff Landry, a Republican, signed it into law in January after a federal court ruled in 2022 that the Legislature had illegally disenfranchised Black voters in its earlier redistricting plan.

Although Louisiana is nearly one-third Black, five of its six congressional districts are predominantly white.

The new map would reduce the Black voting-age population in Democratic Rep. Troy Carter’s district to 51%, while drawing a new 6th Congressional District as a narrow sliver through the heart of the state, from Shreveport to Baton Rouge. The Black voting-age population of that district would be 53%.

Carter blasted Tuesday's ruling on X and urged the Supreme Court to “correct this immediately.”

In a dissenting opinion, Judge Carl E. Stewart pointed to the new map’s effort to address objections to the previous one raised under the Voting Rights Act.

“I worry that the panel majority’s decision fails to properly assess the history that led to S.B. 8 and, consequently, dooms us to repeat this cycle,” wrote Stewart, who was appointed by President Bill Clinton.

He added that the new map was “narrowly tailored to further the State’s compelling interests” in adhering to the Voting Rights Act’s protections against discriminatory voting practices and procedures.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which is involved in the case, signaled it plans to fight the ruling.

“This decision does not change the fact that a second Black majority district is required for Black voters in Louisiana to have an opportunity for fair and equal representation," said Sarah Brannon, deputy director of the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project. "We will continue to fight for the fundamental right of Black Louisianians, whose voting power has continually and severely been diluted."

The outcome of the fight over Louisiana's map could play a significant role in November, when Republicans will be defending their narrow majority in the House.

Texas A&M Cadets Win Sandhurst Trophy For Second Straight Year

A Texas A&M University cadet speaks to other cadets after a military skills competition.

Texas A&M University’s Army ROTC program recently claimed first place among ROTC teams in the 55th Sandhurst Military Skills Competition at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.

It is the second straight year the Texas A&M team won the ROTC Cup following the two-day competition of 48 teams from service academies, ROTC programs and international militaries.

“I am so proud of the Aggies for coming out here and giving it their all,” said Maj. Gen. Antonio Munera, commanding general of U.S. Army Cadet Command. “The team’s performance on the international stage demonstrates their commitment to leadership excellence.”

This year’s team, which is part of Texas A&M University’s Corps of Cadets, is led by Nicholas Nolan ’24, an English major from Kingwood, Texas.

“Cadet Nolan is simultaneously one of the most gregarious, uplifting people you could be around while still keeping people focused and on task,” said Army Maj. Russell Huebner, who serves as the team’s coach and assistant professor of military science at Texas A&M. “He draws the best out of the team when it comes to their work ethic and dedication, and you meet very few young men like him these days.”

Teams qualified for the championship event through regional Ranger Challenge competitions open to Army ROTC programs around the nation. The West Point competition, which was held April 26-27, tested the cadets through fitness events, long-distance movements over rough terrain, small boat movements, and marksmanship and medical skill challenges, among other tasks.

In addition to winning the ROTC Cup, the Texas A&M team placed fourth in the overall international competition for the second year in a row.

“What got us here was consistency in our training plan and a lot of dedication and hard work from our team, along with so many hours of volunteering from our coaches and cadre,” said Nolan, the team’s captain. “It’s an honor to represent Texas A&M. … It’s a fantastic school, and we have the best of the best of the student body represented in the Corps of Cadets.”

Hoag NICU staff are on Team Jay for Saturday’s 5K

Megan Sanchez, infant Jay Nova Sanchez, Hoag NICU nurses Makenna Augusta and Kylie Collins along with Mikey Sanchez.

Jay Nova Sanchez is at that age, almost 11 months old, where Mom and Dad like to try to prompt a first word out of their infant.

“Bananas, blueberries, pumpkin,” Mikey Sanchez of Fullerton said Wednesday afternoon, encouraging his first child. “Say ‘Mama.’ No, not today?”

Jay just smiled, unwilling to oblige, at least for now.

That’s perfectly fine. The presence of a healthy child says a lot by itself.

Megan Sanchez gave birth to Jay via Cesarean section on June 16, 2023, at 1:48 a.m. He was born more than three months premature.

Megan, Jay Nova and Mikey Sanchez pose on Wednesday with NICU nurses Makenna Augusta and Kylie Collins.

His birth weight was about 500 grams — 1 pound, 1 ounce. After birth, the micropreemie was whisked away to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Hoag Hospital Newport Beach .

“We came every single day,” Megan Sanchez said. “We would sit with him, sing with him, read him books. Eventually, we did get to hold him. It was a whole production to hold him because it took four or five people to place him on you. He could fit in my sports bra. That’s how little he was.”

This weekend is about celebrating Jay, the miracle baby. A handful of Hoag NICU staff are running the Hoag OC Marathon 5K along with Jay’s family and friends on Saturday evening at the Orange County Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa.

Kylie Collins and Makenna Augusto, Jay’s primary nurses in the NICU, wouldn’t miss the 5K. They cared for him until he was released in mid-October to go to Children’s Hospital of Orange County, where a gastronomy tube was installed.

He had progressed slowly; he spent well more than 100 days in the Hoag NICU unit, the longest that a baby has been in that particular unit. There were 133 days in the NICU overall, between Hoag and CHOC.

“Celebrating all of the wins is important in the NICU,” Collins said. “Even if it’s, ‘They took 10 [milliliters], which is more than the five than they took yesterday.’ You have to learn what a win is, just so you can keep positive and watch them grow. It sometimes feels like nothing is changing, when things really are changing, you just can’t see it.”

Mikey, Jay Nova and Megan Sanchez pose Wednesday in the Hoag NICU facility.

Jay got to go home from CHOC on Oct. 26. About six months later, the micropreemie is thriving.

“Even in our NICU, everyone’s like, ‘How’s Jay?’” Augusto said with a laugh. “He would be wide awake the whole time, staring at everyone. He just wanted to hang. He loved the ocean view [from his room].”

She added that Mikey and Megan were everyone’s cheerleaders in the NICU.

“We’ve never had parents be so encouraging to everyone else,” Augusto said. “Mikey was always out there telling everyone that he was praying for them, and that they’d be OK.”

The ocean detail is funny, considering that Jay was named after surfer Jay Moriarity , the late surfer from Santa Cruz who was the subject of the documentary “Chasing Mavericks.” Moriarity loved the ocean and was known for his sportsmanship.

What’s more than funny was that the day their son was born, Mikey looked up Jay Moriarity’s birthday. It’s the same as his son’s, June 16.

“We just both sat there and felt very humbled and blessed,” Mikey Sanchez said. “He never gave up, and we know that [our] Jay never gave up. Paddle, paddle, paddle became his thing every day.”

To this day, Hoag doctors don’t know what caused Megan’s complications that led to Jay’s early arrival. What the Sanchez family believes is that their son was meant to be here.

Megan and Mikey Sanchez describe the first time they saw their son's hands at Hoag Hospital.

He was on oxygen when he got home, but that ended within a week. The gastronomy tube was taken out in March; the family hadn’t needed it since the new year began.

“He’s surpassed all of the milestones,” Megan Sanchez said. “Now they don’t even believe us when we say he’s a micropreemie.”

Megan added that her son is living his best life. He’s gone to the river a couple of times and to the beach. He never misses a meal.

Plenty of loved ones will hit the pavement at the 5K on Saturday night for Jay, who one day will understand the difficulties that he’s overcome.

“He’s living his best life,” Megan said with a laugh. “I think he’s a little sad that we traded his Newport view for Fullerton, but maybe one day he can make his own living here.”

Nov 12, 2023; Arlington, Texas, USA; Dallas Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn (42) returns a punt in

Is Deuce Vaughn the Answer to Dallas’s Running Back Questions?

The second-year running back will have a chance to show that he deserves more playing time this season.

  • Author: Dustin Mosher

In this story:

The Dallas Cowboys are no strangers to giving opportunities to young players, and running back Deuce Vaughn is no exception. As he enters his second year in the NFL, the question is: Can Vaughn be the answer to the Cowboys’ running back concerns?

Deuce Vaughn’s journey in 2023 was nothing short of a rollercoaster. Drafted in the sixth round out of Kansas State, he had a memorable draft-day moment when his father, Chris Vaughn (a longtime Cowboys scout), called to announce his selection.

In the preseason, Vaughn was electric and had some spectacular highlight runs. However, when the regular season arrived, he struggled to make an impact. Vaughn played in seven games but managed just 80 yards from scrimmage (40 rushing and 40 receiving). His lack of experience on special teams and inconsistent offensive snaps limited his opportunities for playing time.

Despite his underwhelming rookie season, the Cowboys haven’t given up on Vaughn. He’s part of a 2023 draft class that collectively needs to perform better in 2024. Now, with the running back room in flux, Vaughn has a chance to prove himself.

Here’s why Vaughn could be the explosive element the Cowboys need. In college, Vaughn was a dominant player. He tallied 1,404 rushing yards, 468 receiving yards, and 22 total touchdowns in his sophomore season at Kansas State. He was a weapon for Kansas State and one of the most productive running backs in the entire country.

Furthermore, Vaughn will benefit from an offensive line that should be much improved in the running game this season. His newly drafted teammates, Tyler Guyton and Cooper Beebe should create more running lanes, allowing Vaughn to showcase his speed and elusiveness.

Despite Ezekiel Elliott’s return to the roster and Rico Dowdle getting his share of touches, there are still plenty of carries to go around. Vaughn can complement Elliott’s power running with his explosiveness. If he can prove not to be a liability in pass protection, he’ll earn even more snaps.

Deuce Vaughn’s second year is crucial. If he can capitalize on his talent, adapt to the NFL game, and contribute as a dynamic playmaker, he could indeed be the answer to the Cowboys’ running back questions.
