History and Architecture

Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, who ruled Jaipur from 1778 to 1803, built the Hawa Mahal in 1799 as an extension of the zenana (women's quarters) of the City Palace. The most striking thing about it is its unusual shape, which has been likened to honeycomb from a beehive.

Apparently, the Hawa Mahal has an innumerable 953 jharokhas (windows)! The royal women used to sit behind them to watch the city below without being seen. A cooling breeze flowed through the windows, giving rise to the name "Wind Palace". However, this breeze diminished in 2010, when many of the windows were shut to stop tourists damaging them.

The Hawa Mahal's architecture is a blend of Hindu Rajput and Islamic Mughal styles. The design itself isn't particularly remarkable, as it's similar to that of Mughal palaces with screened lattice sections for women. Architect Lal Chand Ustad took it to a whole new level though, by transforming the concept into a grand landmark structure with five floors.

The facade of the Hawa Mahal is believed to resemble Lord Krishna's crown, as Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh was an ardent devotee. The Hawa Mahal is also said to have been inspired by the Khetri Mahal of Jhunjhunu, in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, built in 1770 by Bhopal Singh. It's regarded as a "wind palace" as well, although it has pillars to facilitate air flow instead of windows and walls.

Although the Hawa Mahal is made out of red and pink sandstone, its exterior was painted pink in 1876, along with the rest of the Old City. Prince Albert of Wales visited Jaipur and Maharaja Ram Singh decided this would be a great way to welcome him, as pink was the color of hospitality. This is how Jaipur became known as the "Pink City". The painting still continues, as the pink coloring is now required to be maintained by law.

What's also interesting, is that the Hawa Mahal is supposedly the world's tallest building without a foundation. It's said to have been constructed with a slight curve to make up for not having this strong base.

How to Visit Jaipur's Hawa Mahal

The Hawa Mahal fronts the main street of the Old City, so you're bound to pass it on your travels. However, it looks most spectacular in the early morning, when the sun's rays amplify its color.

The best spot to admire the Hawa Mahal is at Wind View Cafe, on the rooftop of the building opposite. If you look carefully between the shops, you'll see a small passageway and staircase leading up to it. Enjoy the scene with surprisingly good coffee (the beans are from Italy)!

You don't have to imagine what's on the other side of the Hawa Mahal's facade though. You can actually stand behind its windows, as the royal ladies once did, and engage in some people-watching of your own. Some tourists don't realize it's possible to go in because they don't see an entrance. This is because the Hawa Mahal is a wing of the City Palace. To access it, you'll need to go around the back and approach it from a different street. When facing the Hawa Mahal, walk left to the Badi Chaupar intersection (the first intersection you'll come across), take a right, walk a short distance, and then turn right into the first alleyway. There's a large sign that points to the Hawa Mahal.

The admission price is 50 rupees for Indians and 200 rupees for foreigners. A composite ticket is available for those who are planning to do a lot of sightseeing. It's valid for two days and also includes Amber Fort , Albert Hall, Jantar Mantar, Nahargarh Fort, Vidyadhar Garden, and Sisodia Rani Garden. This ticket costs 300 rupees for Indians and 1,000 rupees for foreigners. Tickets can be purchased online here or at the ticket office at the Hawa Mahal. Audio guides can be hired at the ticket office.

Entry to the Hawa Mahal is free on four days of the year: Rajastha Diwas (30 March), World Heritage Day (18 April), International Museum Day (18 May) and World Tourism Day (27 September).

Hawa mahal, jaipur overview.

The massive edifice of Hawa Mahal stands at the intersection of the main road in Jaipur , Badi Chaupad and was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in the year 1799. Hawa Mahal derives its name from its unique structure, which is a mesh of small windows that allowed cool wind to enter the palace and hence kept the palace comfortable during the hot summer months. The main reason behind the palace's construction was to allow the women of the royal house to observe the festivities on the streets whilst being unseen from the outside as was the custom of the land. It is located right on the edge of the City Palace Jaipur and extends right to the 'zenana'.

Hawa Mahal is a structure made of red and pink sandstone and has a pyramidal structure which almost resembles a crown. It has been embellished with 953 tiny windows, also known as ' Jharokhas' and embellished with gorgeous latticework. From within, the Hawa Mahal palace is based on five floors each of which has a uniquely decorated chamber. A charming fountain welcomes you inside the main palace, from whereon you can make your way up to the different floors. The top of the palace offers a brilliant view of the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and the ever-busy Siredeori Bazar. There is a small museum as well which holds some rich relics and miniature paintings.

Hawa Mahal Jaipur The renowned 'Palace Of The Winds', or Hawa Mahal, is one of the prominent tourist attractions in Jaipur city. Located in the heart of Jaipur, this beautiful five-storey palace was constructed in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh who belonged to Kachhwaha Rajput dynasty. The main architect of this palace built of red and pink sandstone, is Lal Chand Ustad and the palace is believed to have been constructed in the form of the crown of Krishna, the Hindu god. Considered as an embodiment of Rajputana architecture, the main highlight of Hawa Mahal is its pyramid shape and its 953 windows or 'Jharokhas' which are decorated with intricate designs. The main intention behind the construction of the Mahal was to facilitate the royal women and provide them a view of everyday life through the windows, as they never appeared in public. Architecture & Design of Hawa Mahal

The architect of this unique five-storied pyramidal palace with a height of 15 m from its elevated base was Lal Chand Ustad. The design of the building showcases an excellent blend of Hindu Rajput architecture with that of the Islamic Mughal architecture. The former style is palpable from the fluted pillars, floral patterns and domed canopies while the arches and stone inlay filigree work are manifestations of the latter style.

Located at a stone throw away from the commercial center of Pink City, Hawa Mahal is considered as the landmark of Jaipur. Hawa Mahal Jaipur, also known as Palace of winds is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Jaipur. This five-storey Palace was constructed by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799 as he was inspired by the unique structure of Khetri Mahal. The Hawa Mahal was designed by Lal Chand Ustad and it is built with the use of red and pink sandstone on the edge of the City Palace and extends till Zenana or women’s chambers. 

The main highlight of the Hawa Mahal is its pyramid shape which looks similar to a honeycomb and its 953 windows called “Jharokhas” are decorated with intricate latticework. The main objective to create Hawa Mahal was to allow royal women to see everyday life as they never appeared in public. This monument is known as Hawa Mahal as its windows allow good air circulation keeping it cool. Its windows allow people to see the street view without being spotted from outside. History Of Hawa Mahal Jaipur

Hawa Mahal Jaipur was built by Rajput ruler, Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, grandson of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh in 1799. He was inspired by the Khetri Mahal of Jhunjhunu and decided to build a Palace similar to it. This five-storey monument was designed by Lal Chand Ustad as an addition to the City Palace starting from the City Palace’s edge and extends till women’s chambers aka Zenana. During that time, the Purdah system was strictly followed and Royal Rajput Women weren’t allowed to show their face to any strangers or appear in public.

In 2006, After 50 years, Hawa Mahal went under renovation at an estimated cost of Rs 4.568 million. The monument is now managed by the Archaeological Department and Government of India.

Architecture Of Hawa Mahal Jaipur

The front elevation of Hawa Mahal from the street looks like a honeycomb with small portholes. Each porthole has small windows and carved sandstone grills, finials and domes, giving it an appearance of a mass of semi-octagonal bays. Hawa Mahal is built in the shape of Krishna’s crown as it is believed that Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh was a great devotee of Lord Krishna.

Hawa Mahal comprises 953 ‘Jhalokas’ or windows with small lattice-worked pink windows, balconies and arched roofs with hanging cornices. These windows allow royal women to observe day to day activities happening on the street below without appearing in public. These windows also allow cool breeze to pass through the Palace, maintaining a cool and well-ventilated atmosphere during summer months. These cooling effects are enhanced by the fountains at the centre of each chamber. 

The attractive aspect of Hawa Mahal is hanging cornices and you can see domed canopies, fluted pillars, lotus and floral patterns in Rajput style and stone inlay filigree work and arches in Islamic style. The interior of the Palace is not as fancy as its exterior. Unlike the lower two floors, the top three floors do not have a width of one room. The top three storeys of Hawa Mahal are single room, Vichitra Mandir, Prakash Mandir and Hawa Mandir. The first floor of Hawa Mahal is Sharad Mandir. The Maharaja used to worship God Krishna at the Vichitra Mandir, while the Prakash Mandir provides an open terrace to both sides.

Hawa Mahal Jaipur is the tallest building in the world without foundation with a height of 50 feet. Due to this, the palace is tilted at an angle of 87 degrees. There are no stairs inside the building because it was easier to carry Royal Rajput Ladies on ramps than stairs. It is the reason there are ramps to reach at the top of Hawa Mahal. Hawa Mahal also has an Archaeological Museum. In order to enter the Palace, you need to go through an Royal door which is situated towards the left of the building.

When deciding where to visit in India , you might be weighing up  Agra , home to the unrivaled Taj Mahal, against  Jaipur , Rajasthan 's regal Pink City.

We asked two writers to make the case for each Indian city.

Agra has the Taj Mahal. What more do you need?

Don’t worry, this won't take long, in fact just two words should do it: Taj Mahal . Game over. Mic drop. Thanks for coming.

It really should be illegal to travel to India and not see the Taj Mahal. It is quite possibly humanity’s most beautiful building; a love poem carved out of white marble, a soaring monument to love and loss, or, in the words of Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, a "teardrop on the cheek of eternity." It was commissioned by Emperor Shah Jehan in 1641 as the final resting place of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.

A single viewing of this near-perfect building is not going to suffice; you’ll want to re-view it from the banks of the Yamuna River, framed in the symmetry of a Mughal garden, or through a delicate marble screen in Agra Fort . In places it rises above the modern city, at others it reveals itself slowly through the morning mist. Its scale is epic and yet every inlaid detail is as delicate and intricate as lace.

No one traveling with their romantic partner can afford not to add the Taj Mahal to their itinerary. No self-respecting narcissist with an Instagram account will be able to resist posting a selfie with this true icon of India.

But there is so much more to Agra than the Taj. Agra is India's great Mughal city, founded by the Uzbek Emperor Babur in 1526 and elevated to unmatched splendor as the stop-start capital of Mughal emperors Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jehan. For over half a century it glittered as the capital of the world’s richest empire. Today the city boasts three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Agra Fort, one of India's most magnificent, full of pavilions, pools, scallop-shaped arches and impenetrable walls, that doubled as a gilded prison for Shah Jehan, after his son Aurangzeb seized power and threw him in jail here for eight years.

The list of Agra’s other magnificent monuments can fill days of sightseeing: the huge Mausoleum of Emperor Akbar , the greatest of all Mughal emperors; the epic Friday Mosque with its three sandstone domes; and the white marble tomb of Itmad-Ud-Daulah , nicknamed the "Baby Taj." Fans of history can spend days here tracking down the bones of the imperial past.

OK, so, yes, Agra can be busy with tourists and is famous for its touts (though these are nothing compared to the pros waiting for you in Rajasthan !), but this also means there's a lot on offer here, from exclusive moonlight walks around the Taj (five nights a month) to guided rickshaw tours of the old town. There are also some great meals here, centered on the city’s creamy Mughlai curries, and finished off with a chunk of the city’s favorite sweet, peita , a confection of pumpkin, sugar, rosewater and saffron.

If for some reason you need an added sweetener to visit Agra, consider the easy day trip out to magnificent Fatehpur Sikri , the huge, salmon-pink sandstone capital of Emperor Akbar, whose epic series of courtyards, Persian-style gatehouses and towering Friday Mosque (complete with sacred Sufi tomb) ranks as one of India’s most impressive day trips.

The icing on the cake? Agra is just a two-hour train ride from Delhi on India's fastest and most convenient train. You can even visit the Taj on a day trip if you are tight on time, though this monumental city really deserves at least several days.

Jaipur's colorful streets are brimming with energy

Shalbha Sarda is a true Jaipurite who grew up here, wandered far and wide, but returned to the city to call it her permanent home. Now, she's on a mission, grabbing every chance to spill the beans on what makes this Pink City oh-so-special. 

The unparalleled beauty of the Taj Mahal cannot be denied! But once you've nailed that Instagram-worthy shot, the struggle to find more things to do in Agra is real. Jaipur is far superior as an overall destination, with unique and wonderful sights scattered like confetti.

The Mughals, who built the Taj Mahal, showcased their design, art and architecture in many Indian cities, but the rulers of Jaipur had other ideas. They borrowed all the good parts of Mughal designs and unapologetically fused them with their own styles, creating architecture that's unique to Jaipur. To see some, check out Amber Fort , the original royal palace; Jaigarh , the defence fortress housing the largest cannon in the world; and Nahargarh , a fort where the kings and queens vacationed. Those influences can also be seen in the architecture of Jaipur's palaces: visit  City Palace , the current residence of the royals; the iconic pink Hawa Mahal , which has almost 1000 small windows; and Jal Mahal , a palace surrounded by water on all sides.

Jaipur also has more royal palaces than you can shake a scepter at, and many of them have been turned into luxury hotels. Stay smack in the middle of all that royal splendor and paraphernalia at places like the Rambagh Palace , the Jaimahal Palace , and Samodh Palace . 

Thanks to its perfect backdrop of deserts, mountains and forts, along with its significant monuments, Jaipur has also been the muse for Bollywood filmmakers for decades. Visit the atmospheric stepwell at Nahargarh Fort, used in the 2006-movie Rang De Basanti ,   or the floral garden at Maota Lake near Amber Fort, a location in the 2015-film Bajirao Mastani .

The walled city of Jaipur is known as the Pink City, and it's not just a fancy name — many parts of it are actually pink! As you shop for souvenirs, your eyes will be caught by bursts of other vibrant hues, like the red and yellow  bandhej  turbans stacked on parapets in Johri Bazaar, flowing ombré tie-dye stoles at Bapu Bazaar, an array of rainbow colors of the resin bangles at Maniharon Ka Rasta, or the beads in jewellery at Haldiyon ka Rasta — every street in Jaipur is like a technicolor dream. 

Time your visit for one of the city's festivals that honor gods and goddesses and celebrate the harvest – dates are based on the Indian Hindu calendar and can vary. At the spring Ganguar festival (March/April), and the monsoon festival of Teej (July/August), processions take place with caparisoned camels strutting their stuff, Kalbelia folk dancers twirling and spinning, and Manganiyar folk musicians bringing the groove. The Jaipur Literature Festival (January) brings Nobel laureates, Booker Prize winners, and literary legends under one roof.

Jaipur takes pride in its rich regional cuisine. Don't miss wholesome platter meals such as dhal baati churma , a lentil curry served with wheat balls and coarsely ground wheat mixed with jaggery or sugar, topped with a sprinkle of chopped nuts.

India's most Instagrammed tourist hotspots in 2024

A travel company in India has revealed the country's most Instagrammable spots, based on the number of photos tagged in each place on the social media platform.

India Someday identified 25 popular tourist attractions across the country, and then recorded the total number of Instagram posts featuring each location-specific hashtag. These were then calculated by acre – equal to 0.4 hectares – to provide a standardised measure of Instagram popularity density. Mumbai 's Gateway of India came out on top with the most hashtags per acre.

“Discovering the most Instagrammable destinations in India offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolving landscape of travel and social media,” said Harsh Sonawala, co-founder of the travel company that specialises in trips to the subcontinent.

“The high density of Instagram hashtags per acre at iconic landmarks like the Gateway of India underscores their enduring popularity and visual allure. It is interesting to note that although the Taj Mahal has the maximum number of hashtags as expected based on the size and area of the monument, Mumbai's iconic Gateway of India gets the most call-outs”.

As well as big hitters Taj Mahal and Jama Masjid, the top ten list features a few more surprising additions, including Jaipur's Patrika Gate and the Sanchi Stupa in Madhya Pradesh.

“The inclusion of lesser-known gems like Golden Temple and Sanchi Stupa in the top rankings highlights the diverse array of Instagrammable destinations across India. This underscores the importance of exploring beyond the well-trodden paths to uncover hidden treasures that offer unique photographic opportunities and cultural experiences,” added Sonawala.

Here are India's top 10 Instagrammable locations in 2024 for some travel inspiration ahead of your next visit.

1. Gateway of India

Mumbai's top tourist destination stands on the waterfront in Colaba, in the city's south overlooking the Arabian Sea. With 700,000 hashtags per acre, it is India's most Instagrammed destination in 2024. Built by the British, the structure combines elements of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles and serves as a gateway to explore the rich history and vibrant culture of Mumbai. It's also free to visit, which helps boost its popularity.

2. Jama Masjid

Located in Old Delhi, this large mosque was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and can accommodate more than 25,000 people in its courtyard. The marble and red sandstone structure is a rare place of tranquillity in the very heart of Old Delhi's mayhem and is the country's second-most Instagrammed tourist attraction with 359,000 tags per acre. It has four watchtowers and two towering minarets, one of which visitors can climb for breathtaking views of the city

3. Hawa Mahal

The third most Instagrammable spot in India is Hawa Mahal, with 261,326 hashtags per acre. Located in Jaipur, this five-storey red and pink sandstone structure is constructed from the same salmon-toned stone used in the construction of Abu Dhabi's first Hindu temple . Famed for its intricate latticework, Hawa Mahal was originally designed to allow royal women to observe street festivals while remaining unseen. Today, it's largely in ruins, but its distinctive facade makes it a popular choice for photographers, and its top floor offers views over the City Palace and Sireh Deori Bazaar.

4. Patrika Gate

Jaipur's Patrika Gate is perhaps a surprising entry on the list given it's not as famous as other monuments in the country. But with 186,667 hashtags per acre, it ranks as the fourth most Instagrammable spot in India. Travellers can find it at the entrance to Jawahar Circle Garden, where its colourful and intricate frescoes reflect traditional Rajasthani art and architecture. It's also a relatively new addition on the tourism circuit, having only opened to the public in 2016.

5. Golden Temple

Glistening in the Amritsar sun, Sri Harmandir Sahib, or the Golden Temple, has clocked up about 75,000 hashtags per acre on Instagram. The sacred site is regarded as the holiest temple in the Sikh faith and is famed for its gold-plated exterior and views of the surrounding Amrit Sarovar Lake. Built in the 1500s, the temple blends Hindu and Islamic architectural styles and is actually just a small part of the sprawling gurdwara complex on which it sits.

6. Taj Mahal

One of the Seven Wonders of the World, and arguably India's most famous site, the Taj Mahal ranks lower on the list than might be expected with just 61,905 hashtags per acre on Instagram. Located in Agra, the mausoleum was built by Shah Jahan for his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth in 1631. Crafted from pristine white marble, it attracts millions of visitors each year and was described by novelist Rudyard Kipling as being “the embodiment of all things pure”.

7. City Palace

City Palace in Udaipur is a striking place of beauty on the banks of Lake Pichola. Built by Udai Singh II, the Maharana of Mewar in 1559, this fortress was erected as a point of strategic defence. The largest palace in Rajasthan, it has an impressive 244-metre-long facade and combines Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles. Surrounded by balconies, towers and domes, it offers visitors a glimpse into history and stunning views, helping it record 50,600 hashtags per acre on Instagram.

8. Nahargarh Fort

The fort in Jaipur's Aravalli Hills is known for being one of the best places to take in panoramic views of the city. With 50,244 hashtags per acre on Instagram, Nahargarh Fort dates back to 1734 when it was commissioned by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II as a retreat for royal families to escape to. It has a charm of its own and has been used to shoot several Bollywood films , meaning visitors might be lucky enough to stumble upon live-action scenes.

9. Qutab Minar

Significant because it symbolises India's rich cultural and religious history as well as the Mughal Empire's rule, Delhi's Qutab Minar is an architectural marvel. One of the oldest surviving monuments in India, it has the tallest minaret in the country as well as the tallest brick minaret in the world at a height of 72 metres. The Unesco World Heritage Site clocked up 27,151 hashtags per acre on Instagram.

10. Sanchi Stupa

A Buddhist complex most famous for its Great Stupa, Sanchi is perched on a hilltop and rises 16 metres in the air. One of the oldest Buddhist monuments in the country, it is believed to house the ashes of the Buddha. Beautifully proportioned, the mound-like structure shelters the original brick stupa inside and is encircled by intricately carved gateways. The Madhya Pradesh attraction racked up 23,857 hashtags per acre.
