• Nelliyampathy

1. Kotagiri

Located about 61 km from Coimbatore, Kotagiri is a prominent hill station in Tamil Nadu in the Nilgiri District. A number of villages fall in this territory and it is quite a pleasure to explore them when you are on a vacation. This hill station was once a summer resort of the British and there are many colonial styled homes still present. The churches however, truly reflect the nature of the region and have very impressive, European architecture. The best time to visit is from December to February.

Located about 70 km away from Coimbatore, Ooty needs no introduction. A theme based hill station, it is about 3 hours away from the main city and hence is a popular getaway for the residents of Coimbatore. In fact, visitors from all over South India come here every month. The best time to visit is from October to June. One can get the full impact of the beauty of Nilgiri Hills here. The coffee here is to die for and one can ride the toy train as well, and attend flower shows. It is the perfect holiday destination in every way.

3. Bellikkal

This small hamlet is located about 80 km from Coimbatore, and lies on the Sigur Plateau. It is in fact a hill station, and while it is mostly advised not to visit hilly areas in monsoons, the full impact of the beauty of the region is best experienced in the months between June to September, when the monsoons turn the hills lush and verdant. It is located at a height of 5500 feet above sea level and is bordered by the Nilgiris of the Western Ghats. This region is known as the Land of Teak Plantations and is located about 113 km from Coimbatore. The best time to visit is between the months of December to February. The region lies in the Malappuram locale of Kerala and there are some very famous historical spots here as well. At a distance of 40 Kms from Kodaikanal & 485 Kms from Chennai, Thalaiyar Falls, also known as the Rat Tail Falls is the highest waterfalls in Tamil Nadu and third highest falls in India. It is also one of the popular sites for trekking near Kodaikanal. With a height of 975 feet (297 meters), the falls is visible from a great distance on the ghat road towards Dindigul. This falls is considered inaccessible to the general public, as there is no access road to it. However, one can reach these falls with 6 kms trekking after 34 Kms of road journey on ghat road from kodaikanal . The trek duration is around 2-3 hours one way. The trek is considered to be of moderate difficulty. The very edge at the top of the falls has a concrete wall. One can walk along the wall and get near the center of the falls. The water here is considered polluted and it's better to avoid bathing here. One can catch Dindigal / Madurai buses from Kodaikanal, get down at the ghat road after 34 Kms and trek down to the falls from here. There are no sign boards but can get done at the mile stone which shows distance to Kodai as 34 km.
