When traveling to Brazil, having a sim card is essential for seamless navigation and access to the internet. It allows you to easily explore new cities, find top-rated restaurants, locate your accommodation, book taxis, and share your travel experiences with your loved ones.

While roaming is an option, the international fees can quickly become expensive. Therefore, we highly recommend either getting an eSIM or a local sim card to enjoy local phone rates.

The good news is that obtaining either option in Brazil is incredibly straightforward. To help you make an informed decision, this comprehensive guide provides up-to-date pricing information and identifies the absolute best sim card available for your needs.

Best sim card in brazil for tourists.

The best sim card in Brazil is the Claro prepaid sim card. This card comes with a huge 12GB data which is valid for 1 month for just 34.99 BRL (+ a 10 BRL sim registration fee brings this to 44.99 BRL) which I consider to be great value.

On top of this, Claro has the most extensive and reliable mobile network in Brazil, although Vivo and Tim both have fantastic networks as well.

If you are staying for less than 30 days I recommend choosing a sim package which is valid for less time . The cheapest is VIvo’s 15 day package with 4GB data for 15 BRL (25 BRL including the sim registration fee).

If you prefer the convenience of an eSim, Airalo’s Brazil eSim uses the Vivo network and is a good option. The prices (around 60 – 130 BRL and for less data) aren’t remotely competitive to the local sim card offerings so if you’re looking for the best value then you should stick to a physical sim card.

Brazil Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Brazil costs 34.99 BRL in April 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Brazil will cost between $7 USD and $27.50 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Brazil which includes 3GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $18 USD.

Brazil Sim Card Providers

In Brazil, when it comes to sim card providers, there are three major players that dominate the market. Claro, Vivo, and Tim are the leading telecom companies offering sim card services nationwide.

Claro, owned by the Mexican telecom giant América Móvil, boasts a strong network coverage and a wide range of prepaid sim card options to choose from. They are known for their competitive pricing and various data packages tailored for different user needs.

Vivo, a subsidiary of the Spanish telecom company Telefónica, is another popular sim card provider in Brazil. They offer reliable network coverage and attractive prepaid plans, focusing on unlimited voice and data packages.

Tim, also known as Telecom Italia Mobile, is a longstanding player in the Brazilian telecom market. They provide a range of sim card options with competitive prices, along with good network coverage and a variety of data plans.

How to Get a Sim Card in Brazil

Identify mobile providers: Claro, Vivo and Tim are your best options in Brazil.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Brazil

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Brazil at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Brazil then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Brazil have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Claro, Vivo and Tim. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Brazil are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Brazil with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Brazil eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Brazil. The Airalo Brazil eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $18 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Brazil without having to venture outside.

Airalo Brazil

Our preferred eSim provider in Brazil is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Brazil and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Brazil eSim uses the Vivo network to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Vivo networknetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Brazil.

For most travellers we recommend the 3GB data plan for $18 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Brazil

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Brazil eSims offer unlimited data.

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Buying a SIM card in Brazil: Best prepaid and eSIM card options

In this article, you will find a complete breakdown of the best options for SIM cards in Brazil for tourists.

As someone who was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, I must admit I was very disappointed once I found out how hard it is for foreigners to get a prepaid SIM card in Brazil. Once I saw how complicated the process was, I immediately decided I needed to put together a guide to help other people as well.

Requirements for buying a SIM card in Brazil

The main reason that buying a SIM card in Brazil as a tourist is a challenging task is that most companies require you to have a CPF , which is our national personal identification number (like your tax number).

As a tourist, you obviously do not have this document to provide. You can buy the SIM card without it, but you cannot activate it without a CPF in most cases.

So, what are the alternatives?

• Ask a Brazilian friend to register your new SIM card under their number, if you know anyone there
• Buy the prepaid SIM card at a newspaper stand, pharmacy, or hardware store, where they won’t require you to have a CPF. Then, head to an official store of the mobile provider and ask them to register it for you. This process isn’t guaranteed to work, but in most cases it does. They will be able to register it with your passport only.
• Avoid all this hassle and buy an eSIM instead. Once you get out of the plane in Brazil, you will already be connected. ( Skip to this section for more)

Pro tip : In Brazil, we do not say SIM cards, we call them “chip”. The prepaid one would be a “chip pré-pago”.

Available Brazilian SIM card companies

Let’s start with the basics. Brazil has 3 major mobile providers: Claro , Vivo and TIM . 

In addition to these, there is also Oi which recently changed its business model and stopped offering mobile plans to focus on solutions for entire households. 

Many websites will also tell you there is a prepaid SIM card option offered by Correios (the Brazilian official postal company) but I do not recommend it and this is why I didn’t even cover it here. For us, Brazilians, this is not an option we even consider as the coverage and the plans offered are not nearly as good as the other three main options.

Let me walk you through what each of the main mobile providers offer:

Claro SIM card options for tourists

Claro is one of the most popular mobile providers in Brazil and you will find a Claro store in every major city. They have good coverage throughout the country and are a reliable company.

Claro used to offer a prepaid SIM card option, especially for tourists called Claro Visitors. As of the moment I am writing this post, this option is no longer available (but I am mentioning it here as it is worth checking out whenever you go).

Claro’s prepaid SIM card option has multiple different plans available, with different budgets and data coverage depending on your needs. Check their options here .

Vivo SIM card options for tourists

Vivo is another great option when it comes to buying a prepaid SIM card in Brazil. You will be able to buy a Vivo prepaid SIM card in almost every supermarket, newspaper stand, and local shop. They are very easy to find and top up.

One big advantage of Vivo is that they allow you to buy a prepaid SIM card online through their website. For R$ 20 (cca 4,15 USD) you will get 4 GB valid for 15 GB. You can also top it up further if needed.

What I don’t like about Vivo is the SIM card activation process . You have to download an app and deal with a lot of steps, which are hard to navigate if you do not speak Portuguese. If you are able to go to a shop in person, that is the best solution for getting you all set.

Note : Buying the prepaid SIM card in person at a shop once you arrive in Brazil will give you more options and possibly cheaper prices (Vivo states so themselves on their website). From my experience, I can confirm that the options they have online are very limited.

Tim SIM card options for tourists

In my opinion, TIM is the best Brazilian company for buying prepaid SIM cards. When we visit my family, we usually get our prepaid SIM cards from TIM because the whole activation process is the smoothest with them.

It is easy to buy their prepaid SIM cards in stores, supermarkets, and many other outlets. TIM offers a prepaid SIM card made specifically for tourists called TIM Visitors. It costs R$ 25,00/Week (5,15 USD/week) and will give you 1,5 GB valid for 7 days. There are also other options that include minutes and SMS texts as well.

TIM’s prepaid SIM card options are called TIM Pré TOP and are described below:

Which is the best prepaid SIM card in Brazil for tourists?

In our opinion, the best prepaid SIM card in Brazil for tourists is definitely TIM. 

TIM has very good coverage in Rio and most of the main cities in Brazil. The last time we visited Brazil, we went on a trip to Paraty, and during the boat trips, our TIM phone was the only one that had signals (everyone else had Vivo or Claro).

Their prices are competitive, and what makes them stand out is the easiness of the whole process of buying and activating the SIM card.

That being said – you should still be mindful of the fact that you may require a CPF to register the SIM card. Make sure you ask all the details before you purchase your number.

Considering this hurdle, the best option for tourists visiting Brazil for the first time is to get an eSIM beforehand.

What is the best eSIM for Brazil?

The best eSIM for travelers visiting Brazil are Nomad and Airalo .

We have tested and used many different eSIM providers and the only ones we can recommend are these two.

Nomad has amazing service everywhere we go, we never felt like we were left stranded. It is also super easy to use.

Airalo offers amazing data packages all over the world, which makes it very handy for traveling.

Where to buy a SIM card in Brazil?

You can buy a prepaid SIM card in several places around Brazil. 

The most popular options are: 

• Mobile stores – You will find the official stores of Claro, TIM, and Vivo in every major city in Brazil, such as Rio and São Paulo. The easiest place to find them is in shopping malls.
• Newspaper stands
• Supermarkets
• General stores such as “Lojas Americanas”.

Buying a prepaid SIM card in Brazil is very easy, they are very easy to find. As we mentioned before, just make sure you ask about the activation as this is the tricky part of the process.

The most popular questions about buying a SIM card in Brazil

Can i buy a prepaid sim card at the rio de janeiro airport.

There is only one small pharmacy currently that sells prepaid SIM cards, but they only sell the one offered by Correios (which I do not advise getting).

If you do not want to get an eSIM, the best option is to wait until you get downtown and go to an official store of one of the three main mobile providers. There are a few shops selling tourist SIM cards but don’t fall for these as they are just a scam – overpriced and not that good.

What do you need to buy a SIM card in Brazil?

As a tourist, the only document you may need to buy a SIM card in Brazil is your passport (but in most cases, you won’t need to provide any sort of personal ID).

To activate the SIM card, some companies may require you to have a CPF number so make sure you will be able to register your SIM card as a tourist when you buy it.

Can I use my US phone in Brazil?

Unless your plan offers coverage in Brazil, you will pay roaming fees if using your US phone number and they are usually quite expensive.

We recommend you to align with your mobile provider before the trip and if they do not offer any good plan for data coverage in Brazil, it is better to buy an eSIM for your Brazil trip instead. Check Airalo’s or Nomad’s eSIM options.

What is the best SIM card for Brazil if I will also be traveling through South America?

Claro and Tim offer nice plans with coverage across multiple countries in South America, but unfortunately, they are only available for registered users, not for prepaid SIM cards.

If you will be traveling through multiple countries in South America, the best option is to get an eSIM card with Nomad . They allow you to select exactly which countries you will be visiting so you can get a plan tailored to your needs.

How can I top up my Brazilian prepaid SIM card?

You can buy credits to top up your Brazilian prepaid SIM card in almost every newspaper stand, general store, and supermarket, besides the mobile provider’s official store.

The top-up options available will vary depending on the mobile provider you pick for your Brazilian prepaid SIM card.

As I said at the start, I am quite disappointed to see that the Brazilian mobile providers made it so hard for foreigners and tourists to get a prepaid SIM card in Brazil. Even though they did create good alternatives during the World Cup and the Olympic Games, unfortunately, this is the current scenario.

Fortunately, South America is one of the best places where you can buy a SIM card easily.

You should be able to find a cheap SIM card pretty much anywhere in South America.

In fact, most data packages are affordable, which makes the whole thing easier!

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Brazil in person and online.

We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Brazil.

If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Portuguese – you may want to get a Brazilian SIM card for your travels.

If you’re traveling in Brazil, we recommend using a SIM card from Claro, Vivo, Correios Celular, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to South America, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other South American countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Brazil

You can either buy a Brazil prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival.

So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a South American prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Claro, Vivo, and Correios Celular.

Claro SIM Cards

Claro Brazil offers two different types of tourist plans:

• 2 GB, valid for 7 days for BRL 9.99 ($1.88)
• 6 GB, valid for 30 days for BRL 29.99 ($5.65)

Vivo SIM Cards

Vivo has three different prepaid plans available:

• 3 GB, valid for 7 days for BRL 11.99 ($2.26)
• 4 GB, valid for 15 days for BRL 14.99 ($2.82)

Correios Celular SIM Cards

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

As far as I can see, they only offer one prepaid package for their Brazil sim cards which comes with unlimited calls, texts, and Whatsapp.

For just $2.86 you can have 9 GB of data for 15 days along with all the freebies.

It is a pretty insane deal but there are some things to be aware of. The 9 GB of data is made up of 3.3 GB of data, plus a 2 GB recharge bonus, and then an extra 3.7 GB loyalty bonus.

Also, if you are in Brazil for more than 15 days, there are no longer term package options. Considering how affordable this is, topping up twice is not such a big deal.

Is A Sim Card Essential When Traveling to Brazil?

A sim card is essential when traveling to Brazil. In my opinion, having a sim card is essential no matter what country you travel to.

Living without a mobile phone at home would make life a little difficult, so doing it on vacation in a new country you do not know your way around is going to be much harder.

Navigating around a country or a city you do not know without Google Maps would not be easy, in fact, it might just be impossible. So, if you want to walk or drive, your phone and Google Maps are very helpful.

Making travel plans, finding good restaurants, booking things, and lots more also happens from your phone.

Now, you could try to live on free WiFi connections alone and this may be possible in places like Rio De Janeiro but not when you are in the countryside. Also, you might not even get a free WiFi connection in the city, it is never guaranteed.

Safety is another concern. I personally feel a lot safer walking down the street with a phone that will work when I want it to.

Also, when you throw in that you can be connected with a prepaid sim for a month for around $10, it is surely worth it.

Things to Know Before Buying A Sim Card in Brazil

Is your phone unlocked.

For any mobile phone to work with a sim card you buy in a new country it has to be unlocked. Chances are your phone is unlocked but it is worth checking before you get to Brazil.

If you bought your phone outright, it will be unlocked. If you got your phone for free with a contract, it could be locked to a provider, especially if you live in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States.

To unlock your phone, simply call your provider and ask them to unlock it, the process should only take a few minutes.

Are You Using A GSM Phone?

There are two types of mobile networks in the world, GSM and CDMA. Brazil uses a GSM network like most countries in the world, and to use a GSM network you will require a GSM phone for the GSM sim.

Luckily, most mobile phones are GSM, so chances are you are ok. But, if you live in the US or Canada and have a contract with Verizon or Sprint, you might have a CDMA phone which will not work in Brazil.

When buying a sim card in Brazil, you have to give a CPF number, which only Brazilians have. So you need to beg/borrow/plead with someone to use their CPF number so you can get a sim. If you have a buddy in Brazil, ask them to send a photo of their ID.

How To Get a SIM Card in Brazil

If you're planning your trip to Brazil, it shouldn't be a surprise to learn that you won't be able to call, text, or access the web on the go with your smartphone as you usually would at home. And if you do manage to get connected via roaming, it can result in hefty additional charges. That's where SIM cards come into the picture. By getting yourself a local Brazilian SIM card (or, as we'll see, a digital eSIM), you'll be able to connect to the internet via mobile data while on the move and, depending on the bundle you choose, even send SMSes or make local phone calls.

To get a SIM card in Brazil, you basically have two options:

Option 1: Local Physical SIM Cards

Buying a local SIM card in Brazil works in much the same way as buying a SIM card does in your home country : you purchase a small microchip with a fixed prepaid amount of data loaded onto it for a once-off fee. (Especially as a tourist visiting the country for a shorter period, you probably won't need a recurring monthly contract or a more advanced bundle with additional minutes or text, but the option is normally available too, if you like.) You then insert this chip into your smartphone — and away you go!

These physical SIM card microchips come in three main sizes:

• Standard SIM: 25x15mm (about the size of a standard postage stamp)
• Micro SIM: 15x12mm (a bit smaller than a dime)
• Nano SIM: 12.3x8.8mm (about the size of a peanut)

Most SIM card retailers offer only nano SIMs these days, including in Brazil. If you run out of data, you can normally recharge your SIM with ease, too. To do this, visit your network provider's website or go to the counter of pretty much any cell phone shop, convenience store, kiosk, or tourist information in Brazil and ask about data recharge. Many Brazilian retailers countrywide offer data packages for major networks like Vivo, Claro, and TIM, making it a quick and accessible option.

If you don't plan on using your Brazilian SIM for a future vacation after you arrive home, make sure you cut your SIM card chip in two with a sturdy pair of scissors to prevent fraudsters from pulling any personal data from your card, and, if possible, recycle it with other electronic waste.

Option 2: eSIM Cards

A digital alternative to physical SIM cards, eSIMs are regular SIM cards that don't require inserting an actual microchip  into your device while providing the exact same benefits. Newer smartphones (but also smartwatches, tablets, and other devices) can be equipped with eSIMs, and since you don't need a physical microchip to install an eSIM, you can also get one before you even take off on your trip to Brazil. To do this, you just need to visit an online eSIM service, purchase the eSIM you want, and follow the instructions to download and install it onto your device.

Like regular SIM cards, prepaid eSIMs come bundled with a certain fixed amount of data (or, more rarely, SMSes or telephone minutes) which you can use at your leisure while traveling in Brazil. You get to choose the package you want, and you can generally also extend your eSIM's validity easily right from an app.

In general, eSIMs cost about the same as physical Brazilian SIMs or are slightly more expensive per gigabyte, but in our opinion, their accessibility and eco-friendliness make them the better option for most travelers. We delve into why a bit later in this article.

My recommendation

• 10 GB data-only e-sim
• Operates on the Vivo network
• Valid in Brazil only
• Valid for 30 days
• $2.6 USD per Gigabyte

2. Orange Holiday World eSIM

• Valid in 124 countries
• Valid for 14 days
• $3.99 USD per Gigabyte

The simple reason why Traveltomtom recommends an Airalo e-sim card for traveling in Brazil is that they have the best value e-sim card deal. Their 10 GB data e-sim cost $26 USD which comes down to $2.6 USD per Gigabyte. That is the cheapest rate available.

The other recommends e-sim card for Brazil is the Orange Holiday World eSIM which is an international e-sim card valid in 124 countries around the world.

Both e-sim cards are not 5G ready, so only 4G/LTE and both e-sim cards are data-only and do not come with a phone number. Which means incoming and outgoing calls and sms are not supported.

For my research about the best Brazil prepaid sim cards for tourists I also compared all the 4G/5G data networks of the mobile internet operators in Brazil and I found out that Vivo has the best 4G/5G mobile data network coverage in Brazil.

Is Brazil one of your stops on a trip around the world then you can also look into getting an e-sim card for world travelers . There are a bunch of e-sim cards that cover multiple countries and some are great for traveling to South America.

There are 2 very important things to check before ordering an e-sim card for Brazil or in general before using an e-sim card.

Unlocked phones only

Make sure your phone is unlocked. E-sim cards for tourists only work in unlocked phones. If you are not sure if your phone is unlocked then contact your mobile internet provider in your home country.

In general phones from Europe, Asia and the Middle East tend to be unlocked. Phones from North America are often locked.

If your smartphone is locked that means it does not allow another prepaid sim card or e-sim card to operate in the device. You can easily unlock your phone, but depending on your mobile internet provider you will be charged a fee for unlocking your phone.

E-sim compatible phones only

Second, and equally important: e-sim cards only work if your smartphone supports e-sim cards, also called e-sim compatible. All newer smartphones support e-sim cards. If you are not sure if your phone is e-sim compatible then simply go to Google and type in your mobile phone model in the search bar and ask if it is e-sim compatible. You will get the answer instantly. 

If your phone is NOT e-sim compatible then there is no other solution and you can NOT use an e-sim card for traveling to Brazil.

However, you can still order a sim card for Brazil on the internet before your trip. Find out everything you need to know about international sim cards for traveling abroad in 2024 .

Comparison of the best e-sim cards for Brazil

Buying an e-sim card or a physical prepaid sim card on arrival in Brazil at any of the international airports is unfortunately still not possible. At for example Rio de Janeiro (GIG) and Sao Paulo (GRU) there are no phone stores or convenient stores that sell prepaid sim cards for tourists.

It is already pretty impossible to buy a tourist sim card without a CPF (tax number) and even if you somehow manage to do so you will can only get a physical prepaid sim card, not an e-sim.

Luckily there are multiple e-sim providers on the internet that sell Brazil e-sim cards for tourists. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for traveling in Brazil from one of the well-known e-sim card providers that have proven to be reliable operators. 

Here are 3 trusted e-sim card providers and they sell great e-sim card plans for Brazil. They are tested and reviewed multiple times by Traveltomtom:

What is the cheapest e-sim card for Brazil?

The cheapest e-sim card for Brazil is an Airalo e-sim card for $4.5 USD  and it will give you 1 GB data for 7 days. This e-sim is only valid in Brazil and does not support calling and texting. 

Why ordering an e-sim card for traveling in Brazil

E-sim cards are the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Brazil in 2024 and you can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. Pretty much all mobile internet operators limit the data speed for overseas data roaming plans, which means you end up with 3G data speed. Do you have the patience to handle 3G? It is frustrating when all around you in pretty  much every amazing tourist destinations in Brazil there is 4G/LTE available.

And price-wise it should be a no brainer since you have seen how affordable the e-sim cards for Brazil are.

Uncountable times travel friends have asked me: “Tom, can I use your hotspot? My data roaming plan is so slow, it is barely working!” Trust me, get yourself an e-sim card or an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Brazil.

Spend a couple dollars extra and be connected all the time instead of begging for WiFi or a hotspot from friends. 

Where to buy an e-sim card for Brazil? 

You can buy an e-sim card for Brazil on the internet through an e-sim card provider. There are multiple e-sim card providers for Brazil. Traveltomtom compared 6 e-sim card providers and concluded that the above mentioned ones ( SimOptions , Airalo and Nomad ) are the best e-sim card providers in 2024.

When buying an e-sim card for Brazil through one of the above recommended e-sim providers you only need your email address and the e-sim card is instantly ready to use after installation. There is no ID registration needed.

On arrival in Brazil

There are 3 main mobile internet providers in Brazil: Vivo, Claro and TIM. Unfortunately as per March 2024 none of the mobile internet operators in Brazil offer e-sim cards for tourists. They only offer physical prepaid sim cards for tourists, but only if you have a CPF, a Brazilian tax number.

That sounds complicated! Well, let me tell you: IT IS COMPLICATED!

Flying into Brazil and landing at one of the international airports in Brazil of Sao Paulo (GRU) or Rio de Janeiro (GIG) then good luck if you thought you would buy a tourist sim card on arrival. In Brazil there are no sim card shops at any of the main international airports, believe it or not!

I experienced this first hand in Rio de Janeiro and in Sao Paulo. At both airports I wanted to record a YouTube video and gather all the information for writing a blog, but there are simply no possibilities for tourists to buy a sim card.

When to order/activate an e-sim card for Brazil?

You can order an e-sim card for Brazil pretty much any time you want. Most e-sim cards have to be installed on a phone within 1 month after purchasing, some even within 1 year, so you have time.

More important therefore is when do you instal/activate the e-sim card. The validity of some e-sims start straight after the installation, other e-sim cards only start their validity when they connect the first time to a supported network.

Traveltomtom advices to instal your e-sim card on the day of departure to Brazil or before. You will need a stable internet connection to instal your e-sim card. Pretty much all the international airports in Brazil have free public WiFi which works ok most of the time, so you could use that to install your e-sim card.

Just make sure it is a stable internet connection. Therefore just to make sure Traveltomtom advices you to install/activate your e-sim card in your home country. 

My personal advice is to instal your tourist e-sim card for Brazil before you get into the plane, because then as soon as the plane lands you will be connected to the internet without any problems. 

How do I know all this? Traveltomtom has visited Brazil 5 times and traveled all around the country.

How to activate an e-sim card

Installing and activating an e-sim card is made as simple as possible. Everyone can activate an e-sim card and the instructions on how to are very detailed and will be send to you instantly by email. But wait, it gets even easier. Just scan the QR code. 

When you order an e-sim card plan for Brazil you instantly receive a summery of your order including a QR-code after the payment is processed.

You will see a summary of your e-sim card order including a QR code on your screen and at the same time you will also receive an email with the same QR code. The email contains instructions on how to instal and activate your Brazil e-sim card. 

But installing an activating an e-sim card is as easy as scanning the QR code with the same phone where you want to activate the e-sim card on. The QR contains all the information about your Brazil e-sim card. 

Once you scan the code you will be guided through a couple simple steps and within less than 1 minute your e-sim card is successfully installed.

Very important is that you are connected to the internet when installing your e-sim card otherwise you will get an error and issues can occur. 

Tip: if you order an e-sim card with the same phone where you want to instal the e-sim card on then ask a friend or someone nearby to take a photo of the QR code and then you scan the QR code from his/her phone and start the installation.

Things to know before ordering an e-sim card for Brazil 

Here are some general tips and FAQ’s for using e-sim cards when traveling abroad. These tips do not only apply for Brazil e-sim cards, but are things you have to know before buying an e-sim card in general.

Make sure your phone is unlocked

To make sure you didn’t miss this, let me say this again: e-sim cards only work in UNLOCKED phones. If your phone is unlocked then you can use any e-sim card without any problems.

If your phone is locked then ask your mobile internet provider from your home country to unlock your phone before your trip to Brazil. It is likely that your mobile internet provider will charge you a fee for unlocking your smartphone.

If you are unable to unlock your phone you can look into getting a portable WiFi for staying connected when traveling to Brazil or better… bring a second unlocked phone on your trip to Brazil and use it as a portable WiFi device.

Which smartphones support e-sim cards?

Another very important thing you have to check before buying an e-sim card is if your smartphone supports e-sim cards. If you have any of the latest smartphones then there is no need to worry, all new smartphones of the well known brands support e-sim cards.

The fastest way to find out if your phone is e-sim compatible is by asking Google the question: is my (your phone model) e-sim compatible? Simple as that!

Can I trust these e-sim card providers?

All the e-sim card providers for Brazil recommended above ( SimOptions , Airalo and Nomad ) are reputable e-sim card providers reviewed and tested by Traveltomtom. All of them are licensed third party companies and resellers that partner or work directly with the mobile internet providers in Brazil.

Traveltomtom has successfully partnered for several consecutive years with SimOptions and Airalo. Nomad is a fairly new partner of Traveltomtom, but has so far proven to be a reliable e-sim card provider as well. All e-sim card providers have their own Helpdesk which you can contact may you encounter any problems or in case you want to claim a refund.

Traveltomtom does NOT sell Brazil e-sim cards, only RECOMMENDS you to use e-sim cards for your next trip to Brazil.

Can I keep my phone number from home with a Brazil e-sim card?

Yes, you can and this is for many people a reason to order an e-sim card to stay connected when traveling to Brazil. An e-sim card can be used next to your physical or e-sim card from your home country at the same time. You do not need a dual-sim phone for using an e-sim card.

So you can have multiple e-sim cards installed on your phone? Yes, no problem at all!

For example: you can turn off the mobile data from your sim card from home but still use it for texting and calling. Your new Brazil e-sim card you can be used at the same time just for data to ensure you are not wasting money on high roaming costs.

This is also the trick to keep receiving sms for example for OTP (one time password) sms to login to applications.

Switching between physical and e-sim cards is a matter of turning them on/off in the settings. Just always make sure your sim card from home is switched off for data roaming.

Can I make phone calls with a Brazil e-sim card?

No, unfortunately all the tourist e-sim cards for Brazil available on the internet do NOT include calling and texting. The e-sim cards from SimOptions , Airalo and Nomad  are data-only e-sim cards and any outgoing calls/sms are not supported. 

If you (somehow manage to)  buy a prepaid sim card for tourists on arrival in Brazil  then you get (unlimited) calling and texting included.

Most hotels, restaurants and tour companies in Brazil have WhatsApp services, so you can easily give them a call through WhatsApp. There is no direct need for local calling minutes. 

Does a Brazil e-sim card come with a phone number?

No, most of the Brazil e-sim cards that you can buy on the internet do not come with a phone number, which also means you can not receive any phone calls or sms.

There is one exception and that is the Three HK international e-sim card that you can order via SimOptions . This e-sim comes with a Hong Kong phone number starting with +852.

Local prepaid sim cards that you can buy once you arrive in Brazil offer incoming and outgoing calling and texting.

Can I use 5G on an Brazil e-sim card?

No, unfortunately none of the by Traveltomtom recommended e-sim cards for Brazil are 5G ready. Which means the max data speed on all e-sims is 4G/LTE. That said, the 5G network coverage of TIM, Claro and Vivo is not yet widespread. There is pretty much only a 5G signal in the famous cities.

Are there e-sim cards for Brazil with unlimited data?

None of the by Traveltomtom recommended Brazil e-sim cards for tourists include unlimited data.

Even if you would come across e-sim card providers that offer e-sim cards for Brazil with unlimited data then make sure the unlimited data is on max data speed. Mostly the data speed is capped after you used X amount of Gigabytes. 

Holafly is an e-sim card provider that sells e-sim cards with unlimited data, but does NOT specify what is the exact so-called Fair Use Policy (FUP). 

Traveltomtom does NOT recommend Brazil e-sim cards with unlimited data plans. There are always restrictions. And on Holafly sim cards I experienced a reduce in data speed after using more than 2 GB per day. When I contacted support they explained me that I had to wait for 24 hours until my data speed was restored to normal.

Those 24 hours were a nightmare as my data speed was barely enough to use WhatsApp. Social media apps were not even loading! 

Again, Traveltomtom does NOT recommend e-sim cards for Brazil with unlimited data. But if you think you will never use more than 2 GB per day, then this might be your favorite e-sim card. However, what is then the point of an e-sim with unlimited data is what you have to ask yourself.

An  Airalo e-sim card for $26 USD  gives you 10 GB data which for most travelers is more than enough for their trip to Brazil. If this is not enough you can also order 2 e-sim cards and after one is done, you instal the second one.

Are e-sim cards the best way to stay connected when traveling to Brazil?

E-sim cards are the easiest and fastest way to get data on your phone when traveling to Brazil, but what is the best way?

There are 3 ways to stay connected when traveling to Brazil:

Local prepaid sim cards

International prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards.

Let’s compare e-sim cards, local prepaid sim cards and international prepaid sim cards, for you to find out what is your preferred way of staying connected.  

In general if you use a lot of data then local prepaid sim cards are a cheaper way to stay connected, depending on the length of your trip.

However, throughout the article I am sure you already read how painfully difficult it is to buy a prepaid sim card in Brazil. It is only possible to buy one if you have a Brazilian tex number (CPF), which tourists obviously don't have. IF you have a Brazlian friend you can ask them or you go from phone store to phone store and see who is willing to make an exception.

That is what I did, no joke. I went though all that hassle for you to show you what it is like... see my Brazilian sim card vlog below.

If you manage to get one then local prepaid sim cards in Brazil offer pretty small data plans however, they are fairly cheap. For around $6 USD you get a physical sim card plan with 5 GB data.

That said, a local prepaid sim card can only be purchased on arrival in Brazil in a phone store but NOT on the internet. 

Another big difference is that local prepaid sim cards have the advantage that they come with a local phone number and mostly with calling minutes and sms bundles. That means incoming and outgoing calls are supported.

If your smartphone is not e-sim compatible you can order an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Brazil. Some of them are great for Brazil as well as in all other countries in for example Europe, Americas and Asia and you can easily order them online.

E-sim cards vs. local prepaid sim cards

Getting an e-sim card on the internet is the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Brazil, no doubt! You arrange everything online within just a couple clicks. Right here, right now and you are all set for your trip to Brazil.

You arrive prepared and there is no need to visit a sim card shop on arrival in Brazil. As soon as the plane lands, you are online!

But what is cheaper? An e-sim card or a local prepaid sim card for tourists?

When we compare the prices for Brazil e-sim cards with the prices for local prepaid sim cards in Brazil, it is an easy conclusion that local prepaid sim cards are much more affordable as you get many more Gigabytes for the same price.

But local prepaid sim cards can only be bought in Brazil on arrival (if you have a CPF) in a sim card shop and a tourist e-sim card for Brazil can be bought in 2 minutes on the internet before your trip to Brazil without any form of identification.

Remember that some of the e-sim cards for Brazil also go down to only $2.6 USD per Gigabyte. 

After a long flight you just want to get to your hotel and it is often a big task to go to a sim card store and get connected. With e-sim cards you buy on the internet you are connected as soon as the plane lands.

For this convenience Traveltomtom definitely recommends to order one of the listed best e-sim cards for Brazil in the comparison above.

Many reasons why a lot of travelers simply get an e-sim card for Brazil. Faster, easier, less stress and even cheaper depending on how much data you need.

Another difference between a local prepaid sim card and an e-sim card is that e-sim cards are often through a third party, a so called MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). These MVNO’s operate on the network of one of the main mobile internet operators and basically buy bandwidth.

This may sound a little bit too technical, but what it means is that e-sim cards through an MVNO are the last ones in line when the line is busy. Especially during peak times, the performance of an e-sim cards is less compared to a local prepaid sim card from a mobile internet operator.

Bottomline: the data speed of e-sim cards can be less compared to a local prepaid Brazil sim card.

Brazil is known for its breathtaking natural wonders like the Amazon rainforest, famous beaches like Copacabana, and vibrant festivals like Carnival. As a popular tourist destination, staying connected through your phone is essential when visiting Brazil.

Finding the best SIM card for Brazil can be tricky though. Unlike most countries, foreigners cannot simply walk into a store and buy a SIM card. You need a Brazilian tax ID number, which most tourists don’t have.

That’s why I’ve created this comprehensive guide on how to get connected in Brazil in 2024. I’ll cover:

• Options for buying a Brazil SIM card

Overview: Getting a SIM Card in Brazil

Here’s a quick rundown of your options for getting a SIM card in Brazil:

• Local SIM card:  You can buy a SIM from providers like Vivo, Claro, TIM and Oi. But you’ll need a Brazilian friend to register the SIM card for you.
• Prepaid SIM card:  Some stores sell prepaid SIM cards that tourists can register with a passport. But data options are limited.
• International SIM card:  Order a SIM card online ahead of time that works in Brazil. Physical SIM or eSIM options available.
• SIM card at airport:  Only prepaid SIM cards available, and still require registration. Not recommended.

The best option depends on whether you need lots of data, how much hassle you’re willing to go through, and the capabilities of your phone. I’ll explore each option in detail throughout this guide.

Why Getting a Brazil SIM Card Is Hard for Tourists

Unlike most countries, it’s notoriously difficult for tourists to get a local SIM card in Brazil. That’s because Brazilian law requires SIM card registration.

Specifically, you must provide either:

• CPF Number:  A Brazilian tax ID number given to citizens and residents.
• CNPJ Number:  A tax ID number for Brazilian businesses.

Without a CPF or CNPJ number, most stores will not sell you a SIM card.

Brazil SIM Card Registration Requirements

Some stores will sell you a SIM card if you provide your passport instead of a local ID. But your options are limited, and it’s not widely available.

This policy is not unique to Brazil. Many countries require SIM card registration to help prevent criminal or terrorist activities.

But Brazil is one of the strictest when it comes to enforcing registration laws on tourists.

Getting a Local SIM Card in Brazil

Despite the strict registration laws, it  is  possible for tourists to buy a local SIM card in Brazil.

The best option is to have a Brazilian friend or contact purchase and register a SIM card for you.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

• SIM Card Cost:  Local SIM cards cost around R$10-20 ($2-4 USD). Your friend will need to cover this initial cost.
• Registration:  Your friend must provide their CPF number to register and activate the SIM card.
• Meeting Point:  Have your friend meet you at an agreed location to hand over the already-registered SIM card.
• Top Up:  You’ll need to top up/recharge the SIM card as needed during your trip. More details below.

If you don’t know anyone in Brazil who can help, there are a couple other options:

• Travel Agency:  Some Brazilian travel agencies will buy and register a local SIM card for you. This involves extra fees though.
• SIM Card Delivery:  A few companies will courier a ready-to-use SIM card to you before your trip. But it’s expensive.

I only recommend pursuing these options if you absolutely need a Brazilian SIM card with lots of data. For most travelers, an international SIM card or eSIM will be a lot less hassle.

Major Brazil SIM Card Providers

There are four major mobile operators in Brazil that provide SIM cards:

Vivo has the best overall coverage in Brazil, especially in rural areas. Claro tends to have faster speeds in urban areas. TIM and Oi have slightly smaller coverage areas.

All four networks have rolled out 4G LTE service, with Vivo and Claro leading in 4G availability. 5G networks have also launched in Brazil, but 5G access usually requires postpaid plans.

Here’s an overview of what each provider offers for prepaid SIM card users:

• Network technology:  2G, 3G, 4G/LTE
• Coverage:  Best overall coverage in Brazil
• SIM card cost:  R$10-20
• Data feature packs:  2-6GB data packs, priced from R$10-30
• Pros:  Best rural coverage, family plans available
• Cons:  Slow speeds in urban areas
• Network technology:  2G, 3G, 4G/LTE, 5G
• Coverage:  Fastest speeds in cities
• SIM card cost:  R$10
• Data feature packs:  500MB-6GB data packs, priced from R$7-30
• Pros:  Fast speeds, offers 5G access
• Cons:  More limited rural coverage
• Coverage:  Good speeds in major urban areas
• Data feature packs:  9GB data pack for R$15
• Pros:  Competitive data-only pricing
• Cons:  Smaller coverage area than Vivo and Claro
• Coverage:  Mostly urban areas
• Data feature packs:  300MB-5GB packs from R$7-20
• Pros:  Cheap low-data packs
• Cons:  More limited coverage than other providers

As you can see, Vivo tends to be the best all-around choice, while Claro is great if you need super fast speeds in cities.

But with any of these providers, you’ll still need local registration to use the SIM card as a tourist.

Next, let’s look at prepaid SIM card options in Brazil that  don’t  require registration…

Buying a Prepaid SIM Card in Brazil

Prepaid SIM cards provide a loophole around Brazil’s strict registration laws.

A few stores sell prepaid SIMs that tourists can purchase with just a passport for identification. No local tax ID number required.

The downside is that prepaid SIMs have more limited data packages, networks, and stores available. Let’s look at your options.

Correios Celular Prepaid SIM Card

One reliable source of prepaid SIM cards in Brazil is the post office, Correios.

At Correios locations, tourists can buy a prepaid SIM card by providing their passport details. No Brazilian identification required.

Here’s a quick overview:

• Network technology:  3G, 4G/LTE (no 5G)
• Coverage:  Uses its own network, smaller coverage than major providers
• SIM card cost:  R$10 for activation
• Data packs:  1.5GB-20GB data packs, R$25-75
• Pros:  No registration required, packages with unlimited calls
• Cons:  Slower speeds, limited network reach

I used a Correios SIM card on my trip to Brazil since it was the easiest option as a tourist. The network was slow at times, but usable for basic Google Maps and messaging.

If you go this route, I suggest buying the SIM card at a main Correios post office location rather than a postal agent for best results.

Other Prepaid SIM Card Options

Aside from Correios, you may also find prepaid SIM card options at:

• Airport kiosks
• Local corner stores and markets
• Mall kiosks and souvenir shops

However, availability is limited and not guaranteed. I tried multiple airport kiosks in Rio and Sao Paulo with no luck getting a prepaid SIM card.

If you do find other prepaid SIM cards, make sure to ask if registration is required. And inquire about network coverage, data packages, and top up options to make sure it will work for your trip.

Prepaid SIM cards can provide emergency data if you can’t get anything else. But I suggest looking into alternatives like international SIM cards and eSIMs instead.

International SIM Cards for Brazil

Rather than deal with Brazil’s confusing SIM card rules as a tourist, the easiest option is to get an international SIM card.

International SIM cards work in multiple countries. You can buy them before your trip and simply pop it into your unlocked phone once you land in Brazil.

Some things to keep in mind:

• Delivery:  The SIM card ships to your home address before your trip.
• Registration:  No registration required. You activate the SIM card online.
• Convenience:  Put the SIM card in your phone upon arrival for instant access.
• Networks:  International SIMs partner with local networks for coverage.
• Countries:  SIMs can work in just Brazil, all of South America, or even globally.

Let’s look at some of the top international SIM card options for Brazil travelers:

Airalo eSIM

Airalo provides eSIMs that work in Brazil and 200+ countries globally. With an eSIM, there’s no physical SIM card to insert. You simply scan a QR code to activate mobile data.

Airalo has flexible plans ranging from 1GB to 5GB of data. Their Brazil eSIM uses the Vivo mobile network.

Airalo Brazil eSIM Features:

• Unlimited talk & text
• 1GB for 7 days – $4.50
• 3GB for 30 days – $11
• 5GB for 30 days – $15.50

Airalo is a convenient option if you need the flexibility to use data worldwide. But the smaller data packages may not be enough if you’re staying in Brazil long-term.

SimOptions sells international SIM cards with cheap prepaid plans valid specifically in Brazil.

They offer both physical SIM cards and eSIMs delivered worldwide. The SIMs use the Claro Brazil network.

SimOptions Brazil SIM Features:

• 10GB for 14 days – $49.90
• 10GB for 30 days – $24.90

If you just need a Brazil SIM card with lots of data, SimOptions provides excellent value compared to a local SIM.

Seven Mobile

Seven Mobile provides international SIM cards that reduce roaming charges in Brazil and 200+ countries.

While Seven Mobile doesn’t have Brazil-specific plans, it can greatly lower the cost of using your regular phone plan abroad. Rates start at $7.99 per day.

The SIM card works globally, making Seven Mobile a flexible choice. But local SIMs tend to be cheaper than daily roaming passes.

Buying a SIM Card at the Airport in Brazil

When you land at major airports in Brazil, you’ll likely see kiosks and stores selling SIM cards right as you exit customs.

But despite the convenience, I don’t recommend buying your Brazil SIM card at the airport. Here’s why:

• Higher prices:  Expect to pay 2-3x the local rate for SIM cards at the airport.
• Limited data packs:  Most SIM cards will have pay-per-use rates rather than monthly data packs.
• Prepaid only:  Airport stores generally only offer prepaid SIMs, not full mobile plans.
• Registration required:  Airport kiosks still require your passport to register and activate the SIM card.

The one exception is if you need a prepaid SIM card in an emergency as backup. But for your primary SIM, I suggest purchasing beforehand online if possible.

Registering Your SIM Card in Brazil

As mentioned earlier, Brazilian law requires SIM card registration.

If you get a local SIM card through a friend or contact, they must provide their CPF number during the registration process.

Registration for prepaid SIM cards requires your passport details instead.

Brazil again extends visa exemptions for U.S., Canada and Australia, this time until 2025

Brazil’s government extended exemptions to tourist visa requirements for citizens of the U.S., Australia and Canada until April 2025, extending a program aimed at boosting tourism that had been scheduled to end Wednesday.

The decision, issued by Brazilian presidency and the Ministry of Foreign Relations late Tuesday, marks the third time Brazil has delayed the visa requirement since President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office in 2023.

His predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, exempted the countries from visas as a means to boost tourism — although all three countries continued to demand visas from Brazilians.

That went against the South American country’s tradition of requiring visas from travelers based on the principle of reciprocity and equal treatment, and prompted Lula’s Foreign Ministry to say it would scrap the exemptions.

U.S. citizens will no longer need a visa to get into Brazil, Brazil Tourism said Wednesday.

March 21, 2019

“Brazil does not grant unilateral exemption from visiting visas, without reciprocity, to other countries,” the ministry said at the time, while noting that the government stood ready to negotiate visa waiver agreements on a reciprocal basis. It did reach a deal with Japan to ease travel provisions.

The decision to maintain exemptions for the three countries is important for boosting tourism in Brazil, notably from the U.S., Brazil’s official tourism board Embratur said in a statement Tuesday.

Official data shows that nearly 670,000 Americans visited Brazil in 2023, making the U.S. the second-largest country of origin after neighboring Argentina.

The government initially postponed the reinstatement of the visa requirement in October, then again in January. At the time, the government said it was still finalizing a new visa system and wanted to avoid implementing it close to the high season, mainly during the New Year’s celebrations and Carnival festivities in February, which attract tens of thousands of tourists.

The Serra do Espinhaço was once the epicenter of the world’s diamond trade but has been abandoned and largely forgotten about by the outside world for close to 200 years. It’s home to three UNESCO destinations and two globally-renowned biodiversity hotspots in the Brazilian Savanna and Atlantic Rainforest. Yet despite this, its largest conservation unit at the Sempre Vivas National Park receives only a handful of visitors each year, and most of those are from the scientific community.
