Tour Our Trains

Tour our trains.

Take a virtual tour of our trains. Our virtual tours provide a unique opportunity to see what our trains offer, from the comfort of your own home, or on your device while you travel. They are a great visual source of information on our service offerings. They can help you to prepare for your journey so that when the time comes to travel, you're ready to go. You'll find tips for navigating the virtual tours further down this page.

Please note that we have presented our trains as accurately as possible, however changes to our trains are sometimes required for operational purposes.

Our  carriage layout maps  may also be helpful when planning for your journey.

Virtual tours are not an accessible format for everyone, so we have also developed descriptive texts to share information about the facilities and features of the trains. You will find a link to them on each train page below. We are working to deliver information in a variety of alternative formats to meet more people’s needs, including those who are blind or have low vision. If you would like to provide feedback on these text descriptions please email us at  [email protected] .

The tours can be viewed in modern browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge or Safari. Internet Explorer is not supported. The tours can also be accessed on mobiles and tablets, where the touchscreen offers extra functionality while exploring the tours.

You can use your keyboard, mouse or touchscreen to move through the tour.

There is a ‘help’ section that can be accessed at the bottom right corner of the tours. This section provides more information about how to navigate the tours.

Click on the coloured circles throughout the trains (‘Mattertags’), or tap your screen if you are on a mobile device or have a touchscreen, to find out more about the train’s features.

You can view the train tours in ‘dollhouse’ view by clicking on the 3D drawing icon at the bottom left corner of the tour. Alternatively, you can view the tour in 'floorplan' view by clicking on the flat drawing icon at the bottom left corner of the tour. The floorplan and dollhouse views can help you to move around the train to a specific location of interest.

Use the ‘measure’ tool by clicking on the tape measure icon at the bottom left corner of the tour. This tool should only be used as an estimate. You can press the cross icon at the top right of the tour to exit from the measure tool. We have provided useful dimensions and measurements in the tours to assist people who require information about the spaces and onboard facilities to plan their travel.

You can view the tour in 'autoplay' mode by selecting the play symbol on the bottom left corner of the tour. This will take you through the tour automatically, without needing to click through and will show you highlights of the train in the pictures below. Please note that some people with sensory issues may have difficulty viewing the tours in this mode due to the speed of the camera turns.

You can close the highlights reel by clicking on the 'down arrow' at the bottom left corner.

Access Fullscreen view by clicking on the frame icon. When viewing images in a Mattertag, it may be easier to view and move around them in Fullscreen view. In still images, make them bigger by clicking on the image when your mouse changes to a magnifying glass.

As you are moving through the tours, some areas of the tours may appear slightly out of alignment, this is due to the combination of reflective surfaces and narrow spaces. The alignment corrects as you continue through the train.

You'll find more tips for each train on the dedicated virtual tour pages, above.

Domestic border restrictions have ended for nearly all States, meaning you:

  • don’t need to apply for a border pass
  • won’t need a Covid test
  • won’t need to quarantine

However, some States and service operators do require proof of vaccination. So all that is required to travel for most Discover Australia packages is to be fully vaccinated. Even WA has now opened up! It is expected that any remaining temporary restrictions will end or ease over coming weeks – since all governments have detailed strategies to live with Covid and to enable their tourism industry to flourish again. See current travel requirements here .

Many travel insurance providers are now offering good cover for Covid, including:

  • Travel disruptions and additional expenses due to Covid
  • Positive Covid test before travel
  • Positive Covid test during travel (including need to change travel arrangements / isolation)
  • Cancellation Cover
  • Medical expenses cover

Insurance cover can be very inexpensive, like only $150 for three weeks in Europe # . We strongly recommend taking out travel insurance with Covid cover. Following are some insurance companies: Medibank | TID | AHM | NIB Book now to secure the best deal and biggest savings. Use part of your Early Bird savings to pay for your travel insurance!

7 Must-Try Train Trips Through Queensland

25 January 2021 by brisbanista Leave a Comment

train

Queensland has a distinctive spirit, thanks to a lush coastline bursting with flora and fauna, delicious produce, relaxed locals and adventures aplenty. At Queensland Rail Travel, we believe there’s no better way to explore this and more, than via the magic of a rail getaway. Skip the hassles of traffic or craning for a glimpse through the clouds and instead, view this beautiful part of the world from just outside the window of your long-distance train.

If you are interested in exploring the Sunshine State with the convenience of a train, then here are five different train trips you need to try in your lifetime:

Spirit of Queensland

Operating between Brisbane and Cairns five days a week, the Spirit of Queensland is your answer to taking a quick and relaxing trip away. The relaxation starts the moment you step aboard – enjoy modern and spacious seating, a variety of entertainment options on individual touch screens and delicious meals, prepared by a chef, using Queensland-sourced produce.

Enjoy the nostalgia of rail travel as you put your feet up and unwind in your leather Premium Economy seat, or indulge in the ample space of your innovative RailBed – a conveniently spacious seat by day, lie-flat bed by night. Make friends with fellow passengers from the comfort of your seat, or head to the 24-hour licensed Galley Car for fresh faces and a change of scene.

Throughout your journey, our friendly staff are taking care of the ‘little things’ so you don’t have to and our driver is safely navigating the tracks, to ensure you arrive at your destination, comfortably and happily. Wherever you’re headed, a journey aboard the Spirit of Queensland will get your trip on the right track. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/spiritofqueensland

Spirit of the Outback

The quintessential outback rail adventure starts when you hop aboard the Spirit of the Outback. An overnight journey to remember, you’ll depart bustling Brisbane, meandering through heritage towns over 1,325 km, before arriving in the heart of Longreach. Enjoy the open car layout of economy, settling in with your reclinable seat and footrest, before accessing the economy lounge for a change of scene, or a warming meal from the Shearers Rest Galley.

Travel in a First-Class sleeper and enjoy country-style hospitality, where you’ll find a complimentary amenity bag full of items made and sourced in Queensland, so you can make full use of the showering amenities stationed at the end of each carriage. Head to the Shearer’s Rest, a relaxing communal lounge area exclusive to First Class customers – and the backdrop to many new friendships – or take your tablet to watch the latest onboard entertainment.

Delight in all-inclusive meals as you sit down to linen dressed tables for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tuck into meals prepared by our chef using the best Queensland produce, inspired by the region. Upon disembarking, explore all that the region has to offer – towering skies, sunburnt earth, a mix of modern and prehistoric points of interest and always, moments you just have to see first-hand to believe. However, you choose to travel aboard the Spirit of the Outback, be sure to pack your camera and a sense of adventure to make the most of this heritage-inspired journey into this fascinating land. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/spiritoftheoutback

Skip the traffic and enjoy fast and convenient access to Queensland’s iconic coastal destinations when you take the Tilt Train. Travelling between Brisbane and Rockhampton, reaching speeds of up to 160km per hour and transporting over 180,000 passengers per year, you can rest assured it’s a reliable means of reaching your destination.

Enjoy your reclinable economy seat and foot rest while you flip through the pages of your complimentary magazine, or watch the onboard entertainment on overhead screens. If you’re heading to the city or up the coast for work, step aboard and enjoy the comfort of a larger Business seat, a complimentary juice and newspaper or, make the most of the travel time and plug your electronics into the power point at your seat – don’t miss a beat! Head to the Galley Car for a pick me up cup of coffee or something light to eat, or wait for the trolley service, so you can enjoy some snacks throughout your journey.

Explore more of Queensland and take the train to stunning destinations such as the Southern Great Barrier Reef – disembark and head to Mon Repos to witness turtle hatchlings making their way to the ocean; explore the delicious and vibrant produce of the Bundaberg Burnett region, or head to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island for a dip in Lake Mackenzie…the choice is yours! Wherever you’re headed or why, whether travelling solo or in a group, the Tilt Train is a convenient value for money means of taking your next business trip or relaxing holiday.

https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/tilttrain

The Inlander

Away from the coast, there’s a world of discovery and adventure ahead. Step aboard The Inlander and explore another part of Queensland’s vast outback. Whether travelling onboard as part of a Mount Isa Discovery Experience package, or following your own itinerary, you’ll find yourself in awe of the sheer space and changing landscapes.

Settle back into your forward facing, reclinable seat and put your feet up using the available footrest, while you dive into the pages of a book or, your complimentary onboard magazine. Whether stopping off along the way or, completing the entire 977km journey, the train is airconditioned for your comfort, and there are showers and amenities at the end of each carriage, so that you arrive feeling relaxed and refreshed. If you’re in need of a change of scene, head to the Lounge for a friendly chat with other travellers.

If your itinerary allows, we recommend some regional exploration – perhaps you’ll make friends with Hughie, the 7m Muttaburrasaurus and find an impressive fossil collection at the Flinders Discovery Centre in Hughenden? Or spot endangered marsupial, the Julia Creek Dunnart?

Upon disembarking in Mount Isa, explore the town’s prehistoric exhibits at the Riversleigh Fossils Interpretive Centre or go deep underground and tour the coal mines – some of the biggest in the world. The town’s mineral wealth is something to behold – with copper, silver, lead and zinc being mined here. This is truly a trip for those who like to head off the beaten track and uncover a region’s stories. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/theinlander

The Westlander

Jump aboard The Westlander and join us for a relaxing journey into the heart of Queensland’s deep west. As you depart Brisbane, settle into your comfortable seat as you dive into a book or the pages of your complimentary onboard magazine.

Throughout your 777km journey you’ll travel across the ancient Great Dividing Range, through rich farmlands of the Darling Downs, right through to the welcoming town of Charleville. You’ll be passing some of the state’s most established wine producing regions and rich grazing country. Whilst onboard, you can head to the Lounge for a friendly chat and change of scene.

When you arrive in Charleville, head to the Cosmos Observatory during the day to view sunspots and solar flares, heading back at night to marvel at the twinkling stars scattered above – view distant stars, planets and nebulae! Visit one of the region’s most vital functions – the Royal Flying Doctor Service and meet some of the amazing people that keep it running.

For the ultimate outback experiences, acquaint yourself with the ‘Cunnamulla Fella’, immortalised by Australia’s favourite bush poet, Slim Dusty… And before you head home, try your luck fossicking at Quilpie’s renowned boulder opal! Jump aboard The Westlander and embark on a journey of discovery. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/thewestlander

Kuranda Scenic Railway

Uncover one of the world’s great railway journeys aboard Kuranda Scenic Railway. Enjoy relaxing in refurbished vintage carriages as the train winds up the mountain to Kuranda, the village in the rainforest.

Travelling across 55 bridges and through 15 handmade tunnels, you’ll learn what an engineering feat the railway is, a proud testament to North Queensland’s pioneers.

You’ll travel past steep ravines and see lush vegetation so close you could almost reach out and touch it. You’ll pass the impressive heights of Stoney Creek and stop at the grand Barron Gorge Falls. Enjoy the wares of Kuranda locals in the village centre or wander off on one of the walking trails nearby.

Travel in classic Heritage Class or upgrade to Gold Class and delight in locally-sourced food and beverages, as you wind your way up or down the mountain – however you do it, it’s a rail journey not to be missed. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/kurandascenicrailway

Take a step into Queensland’s pioneering past and journey aboard the Gulflander as it travels the Heritage-listed Normanton to Croydon line. Affectionately said to go from ‘nowhere to nowhere’, the line was built to connect the once bustling river port of Normanton with the rich goldfields of Croydon.

To combat seasonal impacts, the line was laid with patented steel sleepers – to this day it retains most of the original sleepers laid between 1888 and 1891 and is the only railway line in Queensland still measured in miles! Although the gold rush is long past, the Gulflander continues to connect its outback community with vital services and visitors with a fascinating history. Enjoy the treasure trove of history and discovery at charming Normanton Station, wandering amongst displays and vintage locomotives and carriages.

Enjoy stops at Blackbull Siding for a cuppa and to stretch your legs and visit Critter’s Camp to spot the local creepy crawlies… All the while, our Savannah-accredited guide and driver will regale you with their detailed knowledge of local flora and fauna, before delighting you with tales of the region’s colourful characters!

If you can, turn it into a bigger adventure and explore Karumba – enjoy a sunset cruise on the Gulf of Carpentaria, learn something new at Karumba’s Barramundi Discovery Centre or, try your luck with a spot of fishing! Whether travelling solo, in a group or with your favourite companion, the Gulflander and Normanton to Croydon line is a ‘must-do’ experience. https://www.queenslandrailtravel.com.au/railexperiences/ourtrains/the-gulflander

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend travel insurance at the time of booking.

While the train has no practical weight limit for your luggage – you must be able to lift and carry your own luggage.  This includes carrying up a flight of stairs and carrying over open ground.   Please note that this is an outback tour and that paved areas are the exception rather than the rule (ie. wheeled bags are not an acceptable alternative to carrying your luggage).

Generally we ask our passengers to limit their luggage to  one piece  (approx 20Kg) plus a smaller carry-on bag (ie. handbag).

Fitness to travel

By booking with us, you acknowledge and agree that you are fit to travel independently, unless you have fully informed us of any special requirements at the time of making your booking and we have agreed to provide the special assistance to you.

We require that all our passengers self-assess their fitness to travel -we have an online guide here at  http://www.savannahlander.com.au/

If you think that there may be an issue – please contact us.  We do have a DDA Compliant railmotor and can suggest changes to your tour that may assist with your specific needs.

The Savannahlander is strictly a non-smoking service for all types of cigarettes, cigars and e-cigarettes. This includes smoking in the toilet area and within 5 meters of the doorways and eating areas.

All our accommodation providers operate non-smoking rooms and facilities, although there may be provision for smoking in a Designated Outdoor Smoking Area (DOSA). Please make your enquiry direct to the accommodation provider when you arrive as to the location of the DOSA.

If you would like to smoke while travelling with us you may do so when the train stops for morning tea, lunches etc. Please talk to your friendly driver about the timing and where you can go to smoke at the specific stop.

Please note that we take the comfort and safety of our passengers seriously, passengers found smoking on the train may be asked disembark the train and leave the tour. In the event that you are removed from the tour there are no refunds available for the unused portion of your tour package.

Disability Access, Special Assistance, Medical and Dietary Requirements

We will try to ensure that any special requests or requirements noted at the time of booking can be met by the Savannahlander.

Please advise any dietary requirements including diabetic, coeliac meals; allergies etc. to ensure the necessary arrangements are made before your arrival.

Please note that all meals are catered for by third parties and while all care is taken we cannot be responsible for the meals that are served. Most providers are happy to provide alternative meals for breakfast and dinners, but morning tea and lunch selections may be more limited.

Please also be aware that you are travelling in remote areas with limited medical access and facilities. Your care in this matter should be related to the severity of your allergic response.

If your reaction is manageable and regarded more as an “intolerance” then you should be fine. You may want to consider bringing some appropriate snacks with you in case you cannot find a suitable morning tea or lunch option available to your needs. There is an “Esky” on the train in which you can keep things cool.

If your allergic response is severe (such as anaphylactic shock), then you may need to consider bringing food with you for your meals. Our providers are happy to facilitate your needs in this respect but cannot provide segregated food preparation environments which may carry a risk of cross contamination. An example is that the chopping boards and utensils may have been used previously with other foodstuffs. Please contact us if you intend to do this.

If you do have the potential for severe reactions, please advise us of the nature of your allergic reaction and access to any medications that you may have with you to treat severe reactions (ie. Epi-pen). On boarding the train please inform the drivers of your medical needs and the location of your medication so they may be able to assist in the event that you are not able to.

The tour operates in remote areas which sometimes have limited medical access.  If you have any doubt about your medical needs please contact us prior to booking to discuss how we may assist.

COVID-Safe travel conditions

The safety of our staff and passengers are always of the highest priority for the Savannahlander. The following new procedures and facilities will be in effect for all travel on the Savannahlander:

Important Covid-19 Information

Thank you for considering the Savannahlander for your next outback rail adventure. Whilst we aim to provide an amazing outback experience, we hold the safety of our staff and passengers as our primary concern. In light of the ongoing corona virus pandemic we have taken advice and risk assessed our business practices and have come to a considered position on the vaccine status of our passengers.

In 2022 we will require all travellers on our tour packages to be double vaccinated two weeks or more before the date of travel.

We ask for proof of vaccination one month prior to travel and your tour will be cancelled if this is not received two weeks prior to travel. In the case that your travel is cancelled at this stage no refund will be available.

If you have any problems or concerns regarding this policy,  please contact our office .

As in previous years, you will be invoiced prior to departure and full payment will be due one month prior to travel.

Can I leave my vehicle somewhere?

As with a lot of rail travel, you may be driving to your chosen departure point for your journey with us on the Savannahlander.

The good news is that all of the stations along the route have space available for you to park a car.  You should note however that while all care is taken and incidents are very rare that your vehicle is parked at your own risk.

The Cairns central railway station has the provision for FREE parking for travellers on the Savannahlander.  It should be noted that Cairns Central has recently moved to “ticket-less parking” which uses cameras to read your vehicle number plates.   To access this service you should do the following:

1) Please note your vehicle registration number on your booking form.  If you change vehicles between the time of booking and the time of travel you will need to  contact our office  to update the registration details.

2) On the day please park your car as normal.

3) When you exit the parking facility simply proceed to the exit and the gate will open for you.

Please note- if you do not provide registration details you will need to pay at the pay-station prior to leaving the carpark.

Please note that if you have a large vehicle, motor-home or RV that you may need to make alternate arrangements as not all parking facilities can accommodate larger vehicles.  We would advise that you visit the station prior to departure to check or make alternative arrangements.

Arriving in Cairns mid afternoon. Arrive by 2 pm to give you time to settle in before you will be met by your tour host and coach driver at the motel, with time to freshen up before enjoying a welcome dinner at 6 pm.

Overnight Double Tree Hilton Cairns

  • Please advise if an accessible room is required.

This morning we depart by coach on our journey across the  Atherton Tablelands . Our first stop is the historical town of  Herberton  for morning tea, before travelling back in time as we enjoy a ride on a  1905 Peckett Steam train  and wooden passenger carriage! Learn all about the rich tin mining history of the area and the important role the steam train played to keep the industry alive.

We then pass through  Ravenshoe , boasting the highest pub in Qld, with a stop to purchase lunch should you wish. We will then depart to the  Undara National Park  for our afternoon tour of the  Lava Tubes.

About 190,000 years ago, there was a massive eruption and lava flowed from the Undara Volcano at a rate of about 1000 m 3  every second. A lava flow this large could fill Sydney Harbour in six days.  More than 50 caves have been found in the park with most to remote to see but we get to visit the 2 best examples with easy access.

Overnight Undara Village or Bedrock Village @ Mt Surprise

Departing after breakfast this morning travelling through  Croydon  for our town tour and on to  Normanton  as we follow the Gulflander train line.

Arriving in Karumba this afternoon we visit the interactive and state of the art  Barramundi Interpretive Discovery Centre  which provides the history, stories, lifecycle and habits of the Barramundi. Discover the wetlands and mangroves and learn about the incredible birdlife and stunning southern Gulf flora

This evening  you can enjoy a cool drink at the  Waterfront Tavern  while watching the sunset over the remote Gulf of Carpentaria. We then enjoy an alfresco  Reef N Beef Dinner.

Overnight Ash’s Apartments, End of The Road Hotel or Karumba Lodge

This morning we will transfer from Karumba to Normanton Railway Station. Take a journey aboard the legendary  Gulflander  for a rail journey unlike any other. Also known as the ‘Tin Hare’, this legendary rail motor is one of the last great characters of the rail world. From wetlands and grasslands to arid Savannah territory, the Gulflander travels through countryside that most people will never see. This nostalgic rail journey is the perfect way to discover an area steeped in pioneering history and heritage.

Disembarking the train at Blackbull Siding and following Morning Tea, we board the coach for Croydon and a lunch stop before making our way to  Forsayth  and check into our accommodation. Time to refresh before our dinner this evening.

NOTE:  Try a  Goldfields Ale  which is uniquely brewed especially for the Goldfields Pub

Overnight Overnight Finnegan’s Rest @ Forsayth

Following breakfast this morning you will be transferred by 4wd Coach to  Cobbold Gorge  where you will be amazed as you delve into a geological process which began 700 million years ago.

This is an unforgettable highlight of your trip to outback Queensland. The tour begins with an informative insight to the geology of the rugged sandstone formations, followed by a guided  bushwalk to the top of the escarpment , with the reward of a magnificent view of the gorge below. Then make your way over the newly constructed  Glass Bridge for an unforgettable view below into the Gorge. Then glide on custom-made,  electric-powered boats  in almost eerie silence ensuring minimal disturbance to the wildlife. There’s every chance of seeing one of the large population of resident freshwater crocodiles.

Some free time following lunch to take an optional Helicopter ride if you wish before we are transferred back to Forsayth in time for our hearty dinner. Please enquire about optional heli costs.

NOTE: The Escarpment and Glass Bridge Walk is 2.5klm and requires a good level of fitness to complete. Shorter walks are available, however, they are not up to the top of the escarpment. The cruise boats suit low-level fitness.

The Savannahlander  (Silver Bullet) travels between Forsayth & Mt Surprise, giving passengers one of the great rail experiences of the world through the Outback. Stopping at Einasleigh with time to purchase lunch at the pub if you wish before travelling through to Mount Surprise.

From here we travel to  Georgetown  for our last night in the Outback! Here we visit the  Ted Elliot Terrestrial Centre  which houses one of the largest private mineral and rear rock collections in the world.

Arriving at Latara Motel we enjoy a beverage or two as we watch the sunset over the outback, with time to freshen up for dinner.

Overnight Overnight Latara Motel in Georgetown

After our breakfast, we will depart by coach and meet the  Kuranda Scenic Railway  for our Gold Class Train service traveling through lush tropical greenery to Cairns arriving in time to freshen up for our farewell dinner this evening.

Overnight Double Hilton Double Tree

After breakfast explore Cairn s some more before making your way to the airport or train station. There is so much to do and see here.

Please note mobility requirements: clients need to be able to board/disembark coach unaided and carry their own luggage to their rooms.

All accommodations except one hotel on our Gulflander tour are walk-in showers. One hotel on the Gulf tour is a shower over a bath.

We have traveled on great trains: the Ghan, the Indian-Pacific, the Trans-Siberian, the Silk Road train and the Rock Mountaineer. And the Savannahlander is as great as any. Not because it is glamorous or luxurious or even air-conditioned, but because it is so uniquely Australian.

The Savannahlander will take you to uniquely Australian natural wonders and introduce you to the hardy, generous and hospitable folk who live in the Savannah of far North Queensland.

You will spend four days being entertained and educated by the Real Aussie drivers who know all of the history of the track, the train itself, the history of the tiny settlements, alive or ghostly, and the ecology and natural history of the unique Aussie animals and plants you might be seeing for the first time.

Your nightly accommodation will be spacious, clean, comfortable and air-conditioned. You will be served generous Aussie outback meals and be offered Aussie wines and chilled local beer which I find the perfect refresher when it’s 95 degrees in the sun.

It is not a fast train, travelling cautiously over rails laid a hundred years ago and on the first day I wondered if it was too long a day. By Saturday I was wanting the trip to go on longer. It is a Great Train Journey and I urge you to rush to book a trip before some Brisbane bureaucrat decides those old rails might as well be ripped up as so many already have been. Melvyn

In June and July 2022, my wife and I embarked on a North Queensland rail adventure incorporating the Spirit of Queensland from Brisbane to Cairns and return; the Gulflander from Normanton to Blackbull Siding; the Savannahlander from Forsayth to Mount Surprise and the Kuranda Gold Pass Scenic Railway from Kuranda to Cairns. This was part of a holiday package. The tour was promoted as “The Awesome Foursome” to highlight that the tour included four rail journeys.

This review provides our impressions of the Savannahlander rail trip we undertook on day 7 of the tour. The Savannahlander is a unique rail experience from Cairns to the inland town of Forsayth, departing Cairns every Wednesday morning at 6:30 am and returning to Cairns on Saturday at approximately 6:30 pm, with overnight accommodation in selected towns along the way. The full return trip embraces 850 kilometres of rail travel in classic 1960s “silver bullet” railmotors. I well remember these being utilised on the Lota railway line in Brisbane and as the passenger service from Brisbane to Helidon near Toowoomba many years ago. The railmotor exteriors are almost in their original condition; however, the interiors have been modified for the Savannahlander service and the diesel motors upgraded. The trains are not air-conditioned but the windows can be opened for fresh air. The Savannahlander is operated by a private company on behalf of the Queensland Government with Queensland Rail maintaining the more than 100 year old rail track which they keep in good condition. For our journey, my wife and I travelled in the 2028 Rail Motor. The train rollicked along at a leisurely speed making the experience all the more enjoyable.

Our Savannahlander experience was a much shorter version of around 6 hours from Forsayth to Mt Surprise. However, it still provided a spectacular and unforgettable rail experience. The scenery from the large viewing windows was spectacular with woodlands and savannah grassland, a number of interesting wildflowers, rocky terrain, plenty of termite mounds and lots of Brahman cattle roaming the countryside with the drivers on occasions having to shoo the cattle off the railway track with their train horn. A really good idea was to keep the passenger front seat immediately behind the driver vacant for passengers to have short-term seating to get the view that the drivers see of the rail track up ahead. We had two knowledgeable driver guides in Will and Mike and their ‘on board’ commentary was superb. Will, in particular, had a great sense of humour – his “treatise” about railway toilet etiquette was both instructive, amusing and oh-so memorable. There is no catering on board; however, after an hour’s travel we had a most delightful morning tea at an isolated spot with an efficient morning tea set-up, known as “Café Bloodwood”. The staff served up a great cup of Billy Tea here as well as fruit cake.

From ‘Café Bloodwood’, we enjoyed a further 90 minutes of travel on the train until we reached the charming little outback township of Einasleigh where we all disembarked for lunch at the classic, historic Einasleigh Hotel ( built 1908) at our own expense – we had quite tasty meat and salad wraps and cake with a can of soft drink, for a modest cost. Before lunch, Will suggested we take to short walk along the well-maintained public footpath to the beautiful and spectacular Copperfield Gorge – well worth the effort. Back at the hotel for lunch and what a magnificent hotel it is with a very ornate dining room with loads of interesting memorabilia and a most impressive second-floor verandah where a good view of the sparse township and the parked Savannahlander can be enjoyed. Just prior to arriving at Einasleigh the train stopped at the old Einasleigh Railway Station so that Mike could pick up the “staff”, the token that gives the train exclusive use of the single rail track for the next part of the journey.

Our stay in Einasleigh of 50 minutes was sufficient to stretch the legs, see the Gorge and enjoy lunch and the Hotel.

The journey continued on after lunch for another 90 minutes to Mount Surprise. The train stopped here overnight with passengers heading for Cairns continuing their journey the next morning. This also ended our journey on the train but not our day’s activity because immediately upon arrival at Mount Surprise we headed straight to the famous Lava Tubes at Undara, 30 kilometres east of Mount Surprise, to witness these iconic landforms first-hand. The tubes were created when the Undara Volcano erupted over 190,000 years ago, pouring out enough lava which flowed from east to west.

So after the Lava Tubes, it was an overnight stay at the Bedrock Village at Mount Surprise, heralding the end of our fascinating day incorporating the Savannahlander. We were pleased we experienced this iconic train journey – it is novel, unique, spectacular and something refreshingly different. There is nothing five-star and nothing flashy about the train but it is a great outback experience and a great way to see the Gulf Savannah region west of Cairns.

  • Full weekly service expected to commence late April 2024

In the wake of ex-tropical cyclone Jasper, the Kuranda Range rail line faced substantial damage, including major track washouts, significant landslips, uprooted trees, and debris blocking the tracks at 61 different locations along the range. Despite the challenges, Queensland Rail's dedicated crews have been working diligently, prioritizing safety and speed to restore services.

We are pleased to report significant progress in this restoration effort, with 39 out of the 61 damaged sites now cleared.

Starting from late February, services will resume on weekends only. This strategic approach will provide our hardworking crews access to the rail track from Monday to Friday, enabling them to continue fortifying the rail corridor against future extreme weather events.

We anticipate completing our long-term restoration works by late April, which will allow us to return to our regular timetable. Rest assured that we will keep you informed of our progress, especially in the event that recovery efforts face setbacks due to heavy rain or other severe weather conditions.

History of Kuranda Scenic Rail It was in 1882 that the miners of Herberton were on the brink of total starvation, unable to get supplies due to flooding. A route to civilisation was desperately needed for the purpose of meeting ships at the port, to deliver goods to the city and towns to the west, and more importantly to bring back the spoils of the hinterland particularly tin, timber, small amounts of gold and subsequently sugar, tobacco, copper and lead. Adventure bushman and colourful pioneer, Christie Palmerston, was charged with finding a starting point for a railway. The Premier Sir Samuel Griffiths turned the first sod for the line which was to be built in three stages.

Men tackled the jungle and mountains not with bulldozers, jackhammers and other modern equipment, but with strategy, fortitude, hand tools, dynamite, buckets and bare hands. Great escarpments were removed from the mountains above the line and every loose rock and overhanging tree had to be removed by hand. After removing 2.3 million metres of earthworks, creating 15 tunnels, 93 curves, dozens of bridges and 75 kilometres of track, a banquet high up on the bridge with General Sir Henry Wiley Norman, Governer of Queensland marked the completion of Stoney Creek Bridge.

On June 15th 1891, Mr Johnstone, one of three Railway Commissioners at that time opened the line for goods traffic only. Just ten days later, the Cairns- Kuranda Railway line was opened to passenger travel. The original Kuranda Scenic Railway is truly a legendary demonstration of man’s ingenuity and nature’s wonder. The 34km Kuranda Scenic Railway was, and still is considered a remarkable engineering feat of tremendous magnitude.

Rainforest Canopy Walk & Barron Falls Lookout Connects Barron Falls Road with Barron Falls Lookout via the Barron Falls Railway Station. Suspended high above the forest floor, the boardwalk weaves through the lush rainforest canopy before descending to the Falls Lookout. There are so many vantage points along the platform that a return walk can take longer to complete than the distance suggests.

Our motive power for the day will be the workhorse of the Queensland Rail Heritage Fleet Steam Locomotive “Bety” BB18 ¼ 1079. Passengers will travel in Heritage Wooden Carriages many of which are more than 100 years old.

With the support of Queensland Rail, we are excited to be operating this trip coinciding with the Ipswich City Council and the Queensland Museum Railway Museum's "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" festival.

On 19th May 1933, six enthusiasts met in Sydney and formed the Great Railway Circle of Australia. In May 1936 the name was changed to Australian Railway and Locomotive Historical Society and further changed to Australian Railway Historical Society in August of 1952.

Membership grew steadily and in 1945 a Division was formed in Victoria. Other Divisions were subsequently formed in the South Australia in 1952, Queensland in 1957, Western Australia in 1959, Tasmania in 1965 and finally the ACT (Canberra) in 1967.

The different State divisions have all developed separate interests and activities, with four operating museums, three operating railways as well as seven State-based magazines currently in production. The countless magazine issues, books, special trains and meetings stand as testament to Australia’s greatest railway preservation group.

Members of the Society could be described as “mechanical greenies” and heritage “doers”; women and men of all ages who come from all walks of life who share a common interest in railways and who enjoy one or more of the myriad of activities available to members of the Society.

The objects of the Society are to promote the appreciation of railway heritage and to maintain authenticity in the recording and preservation of this heritage for the people of Queensland.

The History of the Sunshine Express

In the early years of Federation, two great railways were being built simultaneously across the far corners of the nation. One was the Commonwealth's Trans-Australian Railway, running east-west; the other was Queensland's North Coast Line. Both advanced Australia along the path of nationhood.

In their time, they were Australia's longest individual railway projects, each stretching for more than 1000 miles and, upon completion, they differed by only eight miles in length. Both were begun by pick and shovel.

Two Scotsmen had influential roles in making the Sunshine Express a reality. Their expertise lay in money and mechanics. One was William Forgan Smith the Premier of Queensland and the other was Robert J. Chalmers, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Queensland Railways. Both came from Glasgow.

Decisive and a superb political tactician Forgan Smith was the undisputed leader of the Labor Party in Queensland.  He led a government that invested in rail as part of its program to lead post-Depression Queensland toward better times 'Bobby' Chalmers, sometimes fiery tongued, impulsive and impatient guided the mechanical fortunes of the Queensland Railways for 14 years.  At Ipswich he was a respected engineer and undisputed chief of the workshops he ruled.

Queensland premier Steven Miles questioned over bringing two government jets on crime prevention tour

Live Moment Queensland premier Steven Miles questioned over bringing two government jets on crime prevention tour

Premier Steven Miles and Commissioner Steve Gollschewski

Queensland's premier has faced questions over his use of government jets, as the state government announces plans to bolster police numbers and give Cairns a dedicated chopper.

Premier Steven Miles said he believed the use of two government jets to travel across regional Queensland this week to make crime prevention announcements was appropriate.

Mr Miles, Police Minister Mark Ryan and newly minted Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski have travelled to several regional cities a day this week, including Cairns, Townsville and Hervey Bay.

A police helicopter in hangar.

To transport the travelling parties — which also included local MPs — two government jets were used on multiple days to travel between Brisbane and north Queensland.

Steven Miles said the Queensland Government Air (QG Air) planes were needed for the busy schedule.

"It was determined that was the most appropriate way to deliver the itinerary," he said.

"It just would not be possible for me to have done that without access to those QG Air planes."

Mr Miles said he used commercial flights for travel when possible.

"That itinerary was based on my desire to make sure that I, the police commissioner, and police minster are in regional Queensland as much as we can possibly be," he said.

Live Moment

Look back at how ABC readers and other Australians responded to this live moment.

How can a Polair helicopter assist police?

  • Police say Polair capabilities can enhance police operations in regional areas
  • Polair helicopters have advanced camera, thermal imaging and night vision capabilities
  • The helicopters are used daily to help police with tracking offenders, surveillance operations and search and rescue missions

That is where we will leave our live coverage. Thank you for joining us.

If crime rates are going down in Cairns why is a police helicopter needed?

Police Minister Mark Ryan says in the financial year to date, which is about nine months, the number of offences against properties in Cairns is down 12 per cent   and the unlawful use of a motor vehicle is down 20 per cent.

He says the new helicopter will be there to complement the work that police do.

"Polair is not just about apprehending offenders, it is about saving lives. "The very first call for service the Townsville helicopter was called to was a little boy lost in the bush. "Police tell me that they may not have found that boy if it was not for the helicopter. "That is why you need Polair."

MP says a police helicopter is a 'game changer' for Cairns

"If you are a crook out there you will now be observed from a very high altitude, you won't even know that the machine is even up there, but it will see you," Barron River MP Craig Crawford says. "It can lock on to the vehicle that you have stolen, it can see your heat signature when you are running through the park in the middle of the night. "You will be caught, you will be found, you will be charged and you will go in front of a magistrate."

Wondering what this is? Join us next time we're live and be part of the discussion.

On Monday, Mr Miles travelled from Brisbane to Cairns to hold a press conference alongside Mr Gollschewski after he was announced as the new police commissioner.

Mr Miles spoke in Cairns again on Tuesday, before he travelled to Townsville then Hervey Bay to make announcements about tackling youth crime with Mr Ryan and Mr Gollschewski.

The trio went from Brisbane to Cairns and Townsville again on Wednesday to spruik a new police helicopter and funding for more police officers.

Deputy Opposition Leader Jarrod Bleijie said the premier was   "wasting valuable resources with two luxury jets flying to the same location".

"The same five locations with his police minister," he said.

"They couldn't fly in the same plane together?"

Official guidelines state the government jets should only be used when commercial flights are unavailable or inadequate.

'Aggressive recruitment campaign'

The dedicated police helicopter will be used to combat crime, as the state government announces plans to bolster the force with 900 new officers.

The ambitious recruitment target comes ahead of the looming state election and two days after Steve Gollschewski was appointed as police commissioner.

The commitment includes a boost of 500 sworn officers and 400 unsworn personnel over the next three years.

Despite a competitive labour market, the state government said an "aggressive recruiting campaign" had led to a 200 per cent jump in the number of recruits in the pipeline over the last year.

A group of police recruits, many of them women, standing around their trainer.

Nearly 700 aspiring officers are undergoing training and more than 2,000 applicants are in the recruitment process.

"The extra personnel will be allocated to areas across Queensland, ensuring we are future-proofing our police and keeping pace with population growth," Commissioner Gollschewski said.

"Despite the recruiting challenges being experienced in policing jurisdictions across Australia, the QPS is continuing to see a healthy pipeline of police recruit applicants."

New police chopper

With crime shaping up as a key issue in this year's state election, the Queensland government has also committed to purchasing a police helicopter for Cairns.

The aerial asset will include sophisticated thermal imaging cameras and night vision capabilities.

Townsville received a police chopper in January, which is flown daily to track offenders and stolen cars, conduct surveillance operations and search for missing people.

So far, it has taken 110 flights and located 74 persons of interest and 41 stolen vehicles.

"We heard yesterday from the police in Townsville that the helicopter there can allow them to do some tasks that might have once taken weeks in just minutes," Premier Steven Miles said.

Commissioner Gollschewski said he was "delighted" that Cairns would be getting its own chopper.

"We've seen how extraordinarily successful these assets are both in south-east Queensland and in Townsville," he said.

"They are a game changer for our police here and they will be a game changer for the community."

The announcements are the latest in a suite of new government initiatives to combat crime.

"I train like an athlete": Celine Dion reveals how she manages stiff person's syndrome

The singer was diagnosed with a neurological disease in 2023, leading to the cancellation of all her tour dates, by nardos haile.

Celine Dion is opening up about her journey with stiff person's disease.

In a recent interview with Vogue France, the five-time Grammy winner gave an update about her health and said she was “well, but it’s a lot of work,” adding: “I’m taking it one day at a time.”  Dion was diagnosed with Moersch-Woltman syndrome , more commonly known as stiff-person syndrome, in May last year. The diagnosis led the 55-year-old singer to focus on her health, ultimately canceling her upcoming tour dates and halting live performances as the disorder affected her ability to walk and sing.

Since her diagnosis, Dion said she spends five days a week on “athletic, physical and vocal therapy.”

She continued, “I work on my toes, my knees, my calves, my fingers, my singing, my voice . . . I have to learn to live with it now and stop questioning myself. At the beginning I would ask myself: ‘Why me? How did this happen? What have I done? Is this my fault?’”

But Dion revealed that her perspective has since then shifted: "The way I see it, I have two choices. Either I train like an athlete and work super hard, or I switch off and it’s over, I stay at home, listen to my songs, stand in front of my mirror and sing to myself. I’ve chosen to work with all my body and soul, from head to toe, with a medical team. I want to be the best I can be. My goal is to see the Eiffel Tower again.”

15 people were injured in a tram crash at Universal Studios Hollywood Saturday evening.

According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the victims were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. KTLA, however, reported at least one person sustained critical injuries.

According to a statement from the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department, "deputies responded to the lower parking lot of Universal Studios Hollywood regarding a tour tram collision. The collision caused several passengers to fall out of the vehicle."

The trams are used in the theme park's signature Studio Tour, transporting guests through iconic Hollywood film sets. It's unclear what caused the crash, or if any other vehicles were involved but LASD tells Entertainment Weekly that the "cause of the accident is still under investigation and there is no further information at this time."

The LACFD Public Information Office confirmed the incident in a tweet , writing "at 9:05 units were dispatched to a tram accident where 15 patients were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. CHP will be the lead investigatory agency for all further inquiries."

“Saturday night on the Studio Tour, a tram collided with a guard rail while making a left turn," a spokesperson for Universal Studios said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly . "Our thoughts continue to be with the guests who were involved, and we are thankful that based on agency reports, the injuries sustained were minor."

The statement continued, "We are working closely with public agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, as we continue our review of the incident and safety remains a top priority. We have resumed Studio Tour operations with a modified route and are reinforcing our operational and safety protocols."

Earlier this month, Universal Studios Hollywood was hit with a lawsuit stemming from a 2022 incident in which passengers claim they were stranded while riding Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, an attraction that takes guests through notable locations in  J.K. Rowling 's Wizarding World, including the Great Hall, the grounds of Hogwarts, and the Quidditch pitch.

DETROIT (AP) — The NFL draft has taken the show on the road for a decade, giving cities around the country a chance to be in the spotlight.

Detroit is on the clock.

The Motor City, which was once one of the nation’s largest and most powerful cities, has bounced back from filing for bankruptcy in 2013.

Fans driving and flying into town from the league’s other 31 teams will see signs of progress from the symbolic to the significant.

AP AUDIO: NFL draft has been on tour for a decade and the next stop is Detroit, giving it a shot in spotlight.

AP correspondent Mike Hempen reports.

DETROIT is spelled out, each letter standing 10 feet off an embankment alongside a freeway between the airport and downtown, in an art installation that made its debut earlier this month.

A few miles away, the long-abandoned Michigan Central Station has undergone a renovation funded by Ford Motor Co. to transform the 18-story, 113-year-old train depot from an eyesore into a gem.

In the heart of downtown, where the NFL draft will begin Thursday night, a 685-foot-high tower represents the largest construction project in the city in more than a half-century as it rises from the site of the former Hudson’s department store.

With more than 50 million viewers and an expected 400,000 visitors over the three-day event, there will be a chance to change the conversation about the city.

Lions President Rod Wood pitched the city as a draft destination in 2016 and teamed up with the Detroit Sports Commission a year later to submit the formal bid to land the NFL’s annual event that gives fans from each team a jolt of hope.

The Lions and the local sports commission also partnered with Visit Detroit, Dan Gilbert’s real-estate company, Bedrock, and the Detroit Police Department to make the most of the opportunity.

“The draft here in Detroit is going to make a big step for us in making that old image go away and people having the new image of the city,” Gilbert told The Associated Press. “We’re going to be able to showcase Detroit like never before.”

That’s part of the NFL’s plan, and it has led to 20-plus cities vying for a future draft. Green Bay will host next year’s draft.

After the league had its last draft in New York a decade ago, it envisioned giving cities — particularly those in colder climates that may not host a future Super Bowl — a chance to have a signature event that would have a lot of benefits, including an economic impact.

Chicago was the first tour stop in 2015 and it generated $81 million for the community. Kansas City had it last year, sparking $164 million in economic impact.

“Another opportunity for our franchise and our city and just for the world to kind of migrate to downtown Detroit,” said Lions general manager Brad Holmes, who has turned around a franchise that is coming off its best season since winning the 1957 NFL title. “I expect it to be pretty packed. I’m excited for all the businesses.”

Detroit’s draft is expected to bring in at least $160 million, giving small businesses a boost from fans flocking in and around Campus Martius Park.

One longtime business is looking forward to more than just an increase in foot traffic.

Lauren Stovall, the business lead at Hot Sam’s, and two others representing the 103-year-old men’s clothing store and tailor shop will be onstage during the draft’s final day Saturday.

“There’s a perception of Detroit that comes from people who actually have not been here,” Stovall said. “What’s so great is when people actually come to Detroit, they are blown away, because Detroit is not what they might have thought.”

There are new hotels, high-end and trendy restaurants and bars along with a skyscraper nearing completion. Challenges continue to exist in some neighborhoods as the city continues to demolish abandoned houses, including more than 25,000 over the past 10 years. Crime has been trending down and homicides are the lowest since 1966.

“We’re not going to lose our balance patting ourselves on the back,” Detroit Police Chief James White said.

Hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes officers from Detroit, county, state and federal agencies will patrol the greater downtown area. White said all the city’s police officers will work shifts during the draft, some downtown, others in neighborhoods.

Bomb-sniffing dogs and other K-9 teams will be flown into Detroit by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which also has pledged to have its tactical team on standby. Intelligence agents are monitoring social media for any threats.

Mayor Mike Duggan devoted some time during his annual State of the City address Wednesday to talk about the importance of the draft turning a lot of eyes on Detroit. Visitors for the draft are “going to see a very different city,” the mayor promised.

“We have a chance to reintroduce Detroit to America,” Duggan said.

Associated Press writers Corey Williams and Mike Householder contributed to this report.
