What Helicopter Charters Have to Offer

Helicopter charters offer a level of flexibility not commonly found with fixed-wing aircraft. From point-to-point city travel to direct access to remote areas, helicopter charters can cater to a range of travel requirements.

Fly when you need to: Just like our private jet charters, your helicopter charter is organized around your schedule and unique preferences.

Access to remote or difficult-to-reach areas: A helicopter has the ability to land at helipads, hotels and even private properties, making it possible to quickly reach remote areas or specific locations that would otherwise be inaccessible by private jet or even by car.

Save time: If you need to reach multiple locations in a day, a helicopter is a point-to-point travel method that can pick you up and get you to your destination quickly.

Versatility: Whether you are traveling for your vacation, have an important business meeting, or transporting medical supplies in a crisis situation, a helicopter charter can provide the quickest and most direct charter solution.

HELICOPTER CHARTER FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What’s the process of chartering a helicopter.

The charter process begins with you being assigned a personal charter expert who will put together and send you a selection of available charter helicopters and quotes based on your requirements. Each quote has a clear breakdown of all aspects of the charter flight, such as the selected aircraft and departure and arrival locations, and why they have been chosen. Once you have decided which option works for you, your personal charter expert will book the helicopter flight and send you all the necessary flight information.

If you have any other queries or requests prior to the flight, you will be able to contact your account manager 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Which Helicopter Should I Charter?

Your dedicated account manager will provide you with a suitable range of helicopters based on your requirements and will assist you with making your final decision. View our aircraft guide for more information on the helicopters that we can source for charter.

Where Can Helicopters Land/Take Off?

Helicopter charters provide an unrivaled level of flexibility in regard to take-off and landing locations since they require far less space than fixed-wing aircraft. A helicopter can arrive and depart from remote helipads, hotels, yachts and even private properties, allowing you to get closer to your desired destination. There are certain factors that need to be taken into consideration when arranging a take-off and landing location, however, our experts will discuss all of the necessary details with you when organizing your helicopter charter.

How Much Luggage Can I Take On A Helicopter

The amount of luggage you can take will depend on the size of the hold and the number of passengers flying. As a rule of thumb, we advise one 10kg soft-sided bag per person. This can be increased if, for example, you have a six-passenger helicopter with only one passenger. If a suggested helicopter doesn’t suit your luggage requirements, an alternative will be arranged.

How Many Passengers Can Travel In A Helicopter?

The maximum number of people we recommend for a helicopter charter is typically nine. If you have more passengers than that, we’ll arrange for multiple helicopters to fly the same route. View our aircraft guide for further information

Can a Helicopter Fly in Bad Weather?

Helicopters are subject to weather but they aren’t just for sunny days. Their ability to operate in adverse weather depends on several factors, including the severity of the conditions and the type of aircraft. Our team will keep you informed of weather conditions in the days leading up to the flight and will work with you to rearrange if necessary.

Monday  newsletters  always feature  top 10 travel lists  to inspire.

Today: Top 10 best destinations in the world for a helicopter tour

Our beautiful planet is home to an abundance of spectacular scenery and epic cities, some of which are best explored from above. Taking a helicopter tour not only provides travelers with an unforgettable bird’s-eye perspective of an area, it also offers a thrilling and entertaining experience and plenty of postcard-perfect photo-ops. In addition, helicopter tours are often the only way visitors can enjoy viewing more remote areas of a region.  From beautiful coral reefs and active volcanoes to stunning waterfalls and iconic city skylines, here’s my roundup of the world’s 10 most spectacular helicopter rides that you should consider the next time you’re feeling it’s time for an adrenaline rush.

There is more information (with YouTube videos) below the slideshow. Think I missed one? What’s your favorite helicopter tour? Leave a comment .

10. RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

Home to the Samba and the Caipirinha cocktail, Rio de Janeiro is one of the world’s most beautiful cities , nestled among spectacular mountains, lush greenery, and white-sand beaches alongside the Atlantic Ocean. Locals like to say that “God made the world in six days, the seventh he devoted to Rio,” and it’s not hard to understand where that comes from when you stand by the world-famous Corcovado statue or at the top of the Sugarloaf Mountain, enjoying one of the globe’s most exciting panoramas. And what could be better than a sightseeing tour of Rio de Janeiro from the air? From the vantage point of a helicopter, you’ll have unforgettable views of this beautiful city, nestled against a backdrop of granite peaks rising from Guanabara Bay.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

9. VICTORIA FALLS, ZIMBABWE & ZAMBIA

Representing the world’s greatest curtain of falling water, Victoria Falls is located on the Zambezi River, forming the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Columns of spray can be seen from miles away as – at the height of the rainy season – more than five hundred million cubic meters of water per minute plummet over the edge, over a width of nearly two km (1,2 miles) into a gorge over one hundred m (328 ft) below. The wide, basalt cliff over which the falls thunder, transforms the Zambezi from a placid river into a ferocious torrent cutting through a series of dramatic gorges. The best way to appreciate the true splendor of the falls is to view them from the air. Due to the location of the heliport, the helicopters are over the spectacular scenery of the Zambezi River within 30 seconds after take-off.

8. NEW YORK CITY, USA

The Big Apple is defined by its iconic Manhattan skyline, a mesmerizing silhouette created by dozens of glimmering skyscrapers and easily recognized by almost anybody in the world. The crown jewel in New York’s skyline is the 102 story Empire State Building, which stood as the tallest building in the world from its completion until 1972 (now it it’s the 37th tallest skyscraper). Currently, the tallest skyscraper in New York is the 104-story One World Trade Center, which rises 51 m (1,776 ft) above the sacred site where the Twin Towers were destroyed in the 2001 terror attack. One of the best ways to take in the New York City skyline is by air, with several helicopter companies letting you dangle your feet over famous Manhattan landmarks for amazing photos!

7. GREAT BARRIER REEF, AUSTRALIA

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is one of the planet’s greatest natural wonders. It is the largest reef in the world and consists of nearly 3000 individual reefs, 880 islands and hundreds and thousands of different types of plant, bird and marine life. Swimming with the fish and admiring the colors of the coral is a must for any holiday to the Great Barrier Reef. But to get a complete grasp of the sheer magnitude of the Great Barrier Reef, you need to stop swimming with the diverse marine creatures, get out of the water, let your feet leave the pure-white beaches, book a helicopter tour, and admire the reef from the air. On sightseeing flights to and from the reef, you will experience some breathtaking views over the Whitsunday Islands and over the coral reef formations that make this part of the world so unique.

6. GRAND CANYON, USA

A powerful and inspiring landscape,  Grand Canyon National Park is one of the USA’s most popular tourist destinations. Unique combinations of geologic color and erosional forms carved by the Colorado River decorate a canyon that is 277 river miles (446km) long, up to 18 miles (29km) wide, and a mile (1.6km) deep. The Grand Canyon reveals nature’s sheer force with its towering buttes, pinnacles and mesas, and its immense size leaves many visitors weak in the knees. One of the most exciting ways to see the Grand Canyon is on a helicopter tour, with departure from either Las Vegas or near the entrance of the Grand Canyon National Park. Flying above and beneath the rim of the Grand Canyon will offer views you can’t see from any viewpoint on the ground and will create memories for a lifetime.

5. TIME + TIDE MIAVANA, MADAGASCAR

Time + Tide Miavana is an incredibly luxurious resort located on remote Nosy Ankao island, which part of a five-island archipelago off the north-east of Madagascar. The island is only accessible by helicopter, either from Nosy Be or Antsiranana (formerly Diego-Suarez). A perfectly relaxing journey, the helicopter flight offers breathtaking vistas of the wild landscapes of one of the world’s last wilderness frontiers, including bird’s eye views of humpback whales in the Indian Ocean below if you are lucky. When you fly in and/or out via Nosy Be, the flight path will take over Ankarana National Park, a spectacularly eroded limestone fortress of sharp ridges, patches of dense tropical jungle, deciduous forest, deep caves and canyons (actually the biggest underground network of Africa) and rushing rivers.

4. BORA BORA, FRENCH POLYNESIA

Under a one hour flight from the South Pacific island of Tahiti or Moorea, the island of Bora Bora, with a lagoon resembling an artist’s palette of blues and greens, is love at first sight. Romantics from around the world have laid claim to this island where the castle-like Mount Otemanu pierces the sky. Lush tropical slopes and valleys blossom with hibiscus, while palm-covered motu circle the illuminated lagoon like a delicate necklace. Perfect white-sand beaches give way to emerald waters where colored fish animate the coral gardens as they greet the giant manta rays. You can also experience the beauty of Bora Bora’s lagoon by helicopter. After a safety briefing with your pilot, you will be equipped with a headset with microphones and enjoy a guided tour of this magnificent island with bird’s eye views of the lagoon, the overwater bungalows, Mt Otemanu and the various motus that surround the island.

3. FRANZ JOZEF GLACIER & FOX GLACIER, NEW ZEALAND

The glassy rivers and snow-capped peaks of the Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier are among the highlights of New Zealand’s South Island, and the West Coast glaciers are even more spectacular from above. The exhilarating helicopter ride over the glaciers can be combined with a hike through the most spectacular glacier features. Adrenaline levels start to spike as you board a helicopter and are whisked away over the jaw dropping landscape – an opportunity to take in the full panoramic majesty of Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere nestled within the surrounding mountains. Next, your pilot will land you high up on the glacier itself, where a guide will help you make the final preparations for your hike before you head off to explore the pristine features of this incredible icescape.

FRANZ JOZEF GLACIER & FOX GLACIER, NEW ZEALAND

2. SANTORINI, GREECE

The Greek island of Santorini is arguably one of the world’s most idyllic islands and ranks among my favorite destinations on earth. Perched high above the deep blue Aegean Sea, Santorini’s whitewashed villages are clustered atop dramatic cliffs, with black sand beaches resting at the bottom. The island was shaped some 3,600 years ago by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history, which left a giant water-filled crater measuring about 12 by 7 km (7.5 by 4 mi) and surrounded by 300 m (980 ft) high cliffs on all sides. One of the best ways to appreciate the island’s natural splendor is to fly over the world-renowned caldera by helicopter, especially around sunset time. Peak Helicopter Service offers a choice between two helicopter tours, the standard 20 minute or the extended 30 minute tour.

1. KAUAI, HAWAII, USA

Most of Kauai ’s awe-inspiring sights are inaccessible from the ground and can only be seen and appreciated by a thrilling helicopter tour. Not only is helicopter tour the best way to explore the rugged interiors of Kauai without getting your feet muddy, it’s also only way to grasp the magnitude of the phenomenal Napali Coast. You’ll get a front-row seat to inaccessible scenic areas and get a bird’s eye view of some of the world’s most natural beauty. The most popular tours last 60 minutes and take you through Kauai’s lush tropical interiors of Waialelale Crater, Waimea Canyon, and along the Napali Coast with a lot of extras in between, such as a flight over Manawaiopuna Falls, a backdrop in the film ‘Jurassic Park’. Some companies offer a 90 minute flight that will allow more time to see Kauai’s unparalleled beauty or an open-door ride for a more thrilling experience.

Hello Your 10 selected helicopter rides are amazing, especially the Victoria Falls one which I enjoyed a couple of years ago….but I would also add two other rides, in a hot air ballooning category….unless that is another article: Cappadocia Balloon Rides and Bagan, Myanmar Ballooning. Flying High: Best Helicopter Tours In The World

By GeoEx Staff | December 15, 2018

travel by helicopter

We dream of epic adventures, of reaching that ultra-distant corner that feels completely unexplored, of beholding jaw-dropping natural landscapes from a whole new perspective, of experiencing cultural wonders so remote that most people have never heard of them, let alone seen them. Helicopter tours can be the key to realizing this dream—and doing so with efficiency, ease, and exclusivity. According to GeoEx’s adventure travel specialists, certain destinations are especially prime for exploration by chopper, and with carefully chosen pilot-guides at the helm to share the most amazing sights and landing spots, travelers are in store for over-the-top experiences in these locales. Below are our favorite helicopter tours across the globe.

Kenya: Wildlife & Wild Lands From Above

The extraordinarily varied landscapes, cultures, and wildlife of Kenya make it especially suited for travel by helicopter. By air, you can link and discover the most exciting and beautiful locales, from the lakes of the Great Rift to the deserts of the north to the plains of the Masai Mara and the Chyulu Hills.

You might fly to Lake Turkana, known for attracting thousands of nesting flamingos, which turn its surface into a radiant cloud of pink. Experiencing the spectacular colors of Lake Turkana while witnessing the flamingos at sunset is not to be missed!

Flamingos in flight over Lake Natron, Kenya

After a night at the luxurious and wonderfully remote Desert Rose, a lodge with five guest houses carved out of living rock with open-air bathrooms and spectacular views, you could heli to Silale’s vast crater and over the sand dunes and painted rocks and hoodoos of Suguta Valley, possibly landing to meet Pokot people.

Two helicopters landed in the Suguta Valley in Kenya

Another day you can fly over the northern part of Samburu country, landing by the Singing Wells, where Samburu herdsmen draw water for their livestock from deep wells in the riverbed while singing traditional songs. If you’re drawn to Mount Kenya, iconic in shape and size, you can be whisked around its twin peaks of Batian and Nelion and alongside its sheer cliffs and glaciers, gazing down at the plains sprawling some 12,000 feet below. Its crystal-blue crater lakes offer excellent trout- and fly-fishing.

Canadian Rockies & Rain Forest

In western Canada, untamed ranges with snowcapped peaks explode above the earth and primordial forests tumble to the sea in a maze of islands, fjords, and bays. This spellbinding part of the planet dazzles visitors with magnificent mountains, ancient glaciers, enormous cedars, and a panoply of active wildlife. Helicopter and sea plane travel make it accessible, whisking you into luxurious wilderness lodges from which to base your explorations.

Helicopter at a remote fishing spot in British Columbia's wilderness, Canada

Choppers are on hand each day to carry you farther in, to get a bird’s-eye view of deep-blue crevasses and the towering granite cathedrals of the Bugaboo Spires, to reach phenomenal hiking atop sprawling ice fields and wildflower-dotted meadows perfect for picnicking, and to arrive at isolated rivers rushing with rainbow trout in the Great Bear Rainforest, one of the world’s last great tracts of unspoiled temperate rain forest. With or without heli assistance, you can also tackle a high-alpine fixed climbing route; interact with native Kwakwaka’wakw people; paddleboard; kayak; watch for seals, eagles, whales, and bears; and simply soak in the breathtaking surroundings from sensationally sited hot tubs.

Chad: Wildlife, Deserts & Nomads

With few roads and limited tourism infrastructure, Chad remains far off the travel radar—but the intrepid sorts who venture into this North African nation are rewarded with sensational mountain and desert scenery, incredible wildlife sightings, and fascinating cultural encounters. For the ultimate, most all-encompassing look, opt for a 13-day helicopter trip adventure. On safari in Zakouma National Park, you spot elephants and hear an inspiring conservation success story. Then spend time exploring the breathtaking, volcanic Tibesti mountain range, which splits up Chad’s massive deserts and is dotted with freshwater springs, palm trees, and ancient rock art, some of which dates back 8,000 years.

Helicopter at the base of a natural arch formation in Chad's Ennedi Plateau

After flying over its highest peak, 11,200-foot Emi Koussi, you move on to the Borkou region, which sits at 200 feet above sea level and forms the middle ground between the Sahara and the fertile lands of central Sudan. Zip over sand dunes and the spectacular Ounianga Lakes before touching down on the Ennedi Plateau, where you wander among wind- and water-carved sandstone canyons, arches, spires, and pillars and study UNESCO-acclaimed prehistoric rock paintings. Along the way, you may meet nomads watering their camels at Guelta d’Archei or some of the last remaining Toubou people, semi-nomadic pastoralists from the Tibesti mountains.

Nepal: Himalayan Peaks & Monasteries

Mountain lovers have been beckoned by Nepal’s sensational Himalayas for centuries. Today, the most technologically advanced form of trekking is probably the heli trek.

Traveling by helicopter gives us the chance to live the excitement of being at the top of the world without going through the physically challenging and time-consuming experience of getting there the traditional way. Using the most high-tech mountain helicopters, you can fly very close to many of the Everest region’s major peaks, including 27,940-foot Lhotse, 27,838-foot Makalu and 26,864-foot Cho Oyu.

Helicopter at Everest Base Camp in Nepal

You also get to set foot at Everest Base Camp (16,900 feet) and have breakfast at nearly 13,800 feet sitting face to face with the great peaks of the Himalayas. For a more cultural twist, it’s possible to stop in at Tengboche Monastery and to spend time in the village of Pheriche, meeting locals in its teahouse.

Australia: Diverse Landscapes & Wild Creatures

A mega-diverse island-continent, Australia astounds travelers with its distinctive wildlife (like wallabies and kangaroos) and its range of stunning landscapes, from tropical rain forests and thriving coral reefs in the northeast to red deserts in the center to mountain ranges in the south and vineyard-laden valleys and balmy beaches in the west. It’s a vast country and helicopter tours come in handy to cover the miles and offer unusual perspectives. Iconic Ayers Rock (Uluru), for example, is especially impressive when approached from the air. After a stop there, you can fly to the remote Pitjantjatjara Lands at Cave Hill to behold magnificent cave paintings and explore the Aboriginal Songline (stories).

A small plane flies over Australia's Great Barrier Reef

In Queensland, you might fly over the gorgeous blue-green waters of the Great Barrier Reef, the planet’s largest living thing, putting down to snorkel with colorful schools of fish. From Melbourne, you might fly along the stunning coast to the Mornington Peninsula for a sustainable farm tour, cooking lesson, sampling of local cheeses and fruits, and lunch with area winemakers. And from Sydney, traveling by helicopter into the Emirates Wolgan Valley gives unique access to the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Wilderness Area. To expand your travels to Tasmania, board a private helicopter in Hobart and fly to the sublime Saffire Lodge on the Freycinet Peninsula, beloved for tempting white-sand beaches and rambunctious geology, and then continue to the Cradle Mountain Lodge for more sensational explorations and relaxation.

Ethiopia: Rock-Hewn Churches & Desert Marvels

Ethiopia is home to striking geography and an immense history, spanning diverse religions and philosophies. To appreciate its most-astonishing and least-visited wonders of Ethiopia, hop in a helicopter and fly north. First to the Tigray region, where ancient rock-hewn churches perch high on steep hilltops or hang off cliff faces. By land—with long, rough drives and challenging hikes up nearly non-existent footpaths—you’d be lucky to see one of these sacred sites in a day, but by air, you can reach a few of the top sites in one afternoon, not to mention revel in spectacular aerial views of stratified mountains and sharp peaks rising from the plains. Touching down and going inside the churches gives you the chance to meet their priests and take in colorful, centuries-old frescoes.

A view over the Tigray region in Ethiopia, known for its rock-hewn cliff churches

Next, fly to the Danakil Depression, an otherworldly realm of acid lakes, colorful sulfur springs, active volcanoes, and giant salt pans set on a geographical fault within the Great Rift Valley. You can hover above the bubbling lava lake of Erta Ale’s southerly crater and land nearby in the Danakil to see what it feels like to stand at one of the lowest points of earth and one of the hottest.

A helicopter near the sulfur pools of the Danakil Depression, Ethiopia

If you wish, camp overnight to watch bright orange and red sprays of lava shooting into the dark sky. En route back to civilization afterwards, keep an eye out on the inhospitable land below you for huge camel trains of the Afar nomadic people, snaking their way across to collect salt.

New Zealand: Glaciers & Volcanoes

New Zealand is known for its natural majesty and stunning bio-, eco-, and scenic diversity, and helicopter tours can treat visitors to some of the country’s most dramatic and breathtaking views. On the South Island of New Zealand, don’t miss the chance to fly to the nation’s highest peak, 12,313-foot Mount Cook—or Aoraki, as it is known in Maori. You move over rolling farmland and stunning turquoise lakes before reaching the magnificent, glacier-draped Mount Cook. After setting down to get acquainted with the glacier and enjoy a gourmet picnic, you may take back to the skies and make your way to Queensland along the western side of the Southern Alps, gazing over high ridges and a gorgeous, untouched landscape.

A helicopter lands on Franz Josef Glacier on New Zealand's South Island

Another Southern Alps highlight destination is Minaret Station, a family-owned and -run ranch and luxury lodge set in a pristine glacial valley that’s accessible only by helicopter. After you’ve arrived there, you can relax on your private deck with views of Mount Aspiring National Park and sparkling Lake Wanaka, or you can take back to the skies for a range of wilderness experiences, including heli-hiking, -skiing, -fishing, and -biking. You might also fly to Fiordland’s remote beaches to feast al fresco on barbecued crayfish or to meet lounging sea lions.

Aerial image of White Island in the Bay of Plenty, North Island, New Zealand

Of the North Island’s many volcanic marvels, White Island—or Whakaari—may be the most impressive. Popping 1053 feet out of the Bay of Plenty to the east of the North Island, it’s one of the world’s few accessible active volcanoes, with sulfur-lipped fumaroles and roaring steam vents creating a stark wonderland amidst the mud- and ash-soaked crater, which almost bisects the isle. To see it for yourself, take a helicopter tour from Rotorua, savoring aerial views before landing on its lunar-like surface. Your pilot-guide leads you on foot to carefully explore the crater floor, observing active steam vents, hot streams, vibrant sulfur formations, and the steaming crater, and learning about the island’s history and geology.

Botswana: Astonishing Wildlife & Waterways

After traveling 1,000 long miles and cutting through the bone-dry Kalahari Desert, the Okavango River miraculously dissolves into the earth’s largest inland delta—one that supports a dizzying variety of flora and fauna. It’s a top thrill for nature lovers to visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site, taking mokoro boat rides, game drives, and bush walks to spot hippos, giraffes, crocodiles, lions, leopards, rhinos, hundreds of bird species, and much more. To broaden your appreciation of the Okavango Delta landscape and its denizens and to provide incredible photographic opportunities, lift off by chopper from your luxury safari lodge and soar over the elegantly winding waterways, lush marshes, riverine forests, and grassy plains.

Aerial image of a herd of Cape Buffalo in the Kwedi Concession of Botswana's Okavango Delta

From above you might spy an enormous herd of cavorting elephant, an astonishing line of wildebeest migrating across a spillway, a group of gracefully grazing gazelles, or dozens of giraffes ambling along the horizon. Following the game and the lines of the landscape, your pilot may touch down and lead you on a bush walk for a closer look or may wing you to a remote palm island in the delta that you have all to yourselves for a champagne toast.

You might also fly from the delta to the Tsodilo Hills, located in the northwest corner of Botswana and a UNESCO site for its 4,500 rock paintings. This ancient art has unique religious and spiritual significance to the local people and provides a rare record of human settlement over thousands of years.

Cambodia: Ancient UNESCO-Acclaimed Temples

One of humanity’s greatest architectural achievement nestles amid Cambodia’s dense jungles: the temples of the Khmer Empire. Reaching them by helicopter offers a vantage point and ease that few travelers have the privilege of experiencing. As you fly over thriving countryside, verdant rice paddies, and bustling villages, you gain a new perspective on the vastness of the once-great kingdom.

You might touch down at the seldom-visited, UNESCO-listed Preah Vihear, a Hindu temple complex near the border with Thailand that predates Angkor Wat by 100 years and has one of the most spectacular settings of all of Cambodia’s temples: atop a 1720-foot cliff. Then return to the skies and helicopter to the jungle-engulfed Beng Mealea (the Lotus Pond Temple), built early in the 11th century by Suryavarman II. Clambering over large sandstone blocks to reach the inner sanctuary and eerie worship corridor may give you the feeling that you are the first to discover it.

Prasat Beng Mealea temple ruins in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia

Monks at an active pagoda nearby may grace you with a personal blessing before you reboard the chopper and make your way to the Koh Ker Temple, former royal capital of Jayavarman IV and location of Prasat Thom, an imposing seven-tiered pyramid and temple complex. All this before returning to Siem Reap, where a private visit to Conservation d’Angkor, not normally open to the public, can be arranged for the following day.

Guatemala: Mountains, Villages & Jungle-Tucked Ruins

Rich in tremendous scenery, Mayan glories, colonial grandeur, and warm-hearted folks, Guatemala is one of our favorite places in the Americas for a full-on cultural immersion—yet it’s often overlooked by travelers. If you’re ready for a good look over its highest lights, we recommend traveling by helicopter. First, zip from Antigua to the top of Pacaya Volcano, a grumbling, smoke-belching, 8371-foot spectacle, where you can step out onto a barren moonscape of loose rock, watch steam vents billowing, and take in a panorama that stretches to the northern volcanoes, the Pacific lowlands, and all the way to El Salvador.

Helicopter flight over volcanoes in Guatemala

Next on your tour of Guatemala’s highlights by helicopter, fly to Lake Atitlan via the world-famous Chichicastenango market (avoiding more than four hours of driving). After a couple days enjoying the rugged hills and traditional highland villages around Lake Atitlán (with opportunities to shop for hand-woven textiles, hike volcanoes, kayak, bike, and go zip-lining), continue to the country’s remote, jungle-clad north. Get a lift by chopper to the super-isolated Mayan archaeological site of El Mirador, accessible only by air or multiday trek. This site thrived during the Mayan Pre-Classic Era, but was completely abandoned in 150 CE for unknown reasons. As you wander among its mysterious ruins and ongoing excavations—much of what’s here remains shrouded in dense foliage—consider that El Mirador comprises the largest cluster of buildings (and the biggest pyramid) of any Mayan site, even Tikal.

Alaska: Glaciers, Braided Rivers & Bears

Although it’s best known for Denali, which at 20,310 feet is the highest point in North America, the Alaskan Range’s southern portion is rugged, wild, gorgeous, and so remote that it receives very few visitors. This quintessential Alaska wilderness can be experienced by flying into the family-owned, supremely comfortable Winterlake Lodge and then exploring the surroundings with the on-site R-44 and A-Star helicopters. While soaring up above the evergreen forests, you can watch braided rivers spread out before you, running with spawning salmon and traced eagerly by brown bears. You can spot moose standing in meadows and clumps of fuchsia fireweed accenting the ridgelines.

Winterlake Lodge helicopter excursion to a remote picnic spot in the Alaska Range, United States

You might land on Trimble Glacier to visit a team of sled dogs at their summer camp, go cross-country skiing, or observe glacier moulins, where pristine runoff spins into icy aquamarine holes and disappears. You might fly instead to the Happy River, where you’re dropped for a Class III rafting trip or fly-fishing excursion—always looking out for bald eagles, Dall’s sheep, and brown and black bears. If you’d rather hike through this alpine wonderland, get a heli lift to the summit of Wolverine Ridge or Lupine Falls and ramble to your heart’s content, savoring the sight of snowcapped peaks, blooming wildflowers, blueberry patches, shimmering lakes, and no development.

Go Farther with Helicopter Adventures

What you see above is just the tip of the iceberg. Other wonderful destinations for helicopter excursions include the safari destination of Namibia , where you can soar over the world’s highest sand dunes and watch for hardy wildlife, and the emerging South American country of Colombia , where you can travel by helicopter to a jungle-tucked lost city that would otherwise take five days to trek to, and then fly down to a Kogi tribe village for a rare and authentic interaction.

Aerial view from a helicopter excursion over Tayrona National Park, Colombia

In Chile’s mountain paradise of Patagonia , you can savor spectacular Lake District views, fly to thermal springs, go heli-biking on lava fields, as well as go heli-fishing and -rafting, and in the geothermal wonderland of Iceland, you can reach astonishing and isolated volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls, and black-sand beaches by chopper. If you’d rather helicopter among fjords and awe-inspiring peaks in Europe, head to Norway and choose from a wide array of outdoor activities. The possibilities and destinations are endless.

11 Stunning Hotels You Can Only Reach by Helicopter or Float Plane

By Ashley Mateo

a tiny chalet at the top of snowy white mountains

Modern conveniences like Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, and smartphone apps are making flying easier than ever, but some destinations take just a little more effort to get to—and they’re so worth the extra air time. You’ll have to take a private helicopter or float plane to reach these private islands, cliffside lodges, and lakefront cabins, but, once there, you’ll be rewarded with stunning scenery and almost total seclusion. Looking to drop off the grid for a bit? One of these 11 hotels should make the shortlist for your next getaway.

Minaret Station, Lake Wanaka, New Zealand

a collection of houses at the base of a snowy mounatin

Tucked into New Zealand’s Southern Alps, at the head of a glacial valley, Minaret Station is a rustic escape that shares 50,000 acres with a working high-country farm and can only be reached by helicopter from Wanaka. Raised wooden boardwalks crisscross the alpine meadow, linking the four alpine chalets to the main lodge and kitchen, all of which are outfitted in classic sheepskin and plaid country decor. Guests can go hiking, fishing, jet boating, heli-skiing, and heli-biking on the property or at Fiordland National Park’s nearby beaches, then dine on fresh meat and seafood from Stewart Island and Fiordland at the Mountain Kitchen Lodge. minaretstation.com

Talus Lodge, British Columbia, Canada

a helicopter landing near cabins in the mountains

Up in the high reaches (7,600 feet high, to be exact) of the Canadian Rocky Mountains—near Banff National Park and the continental divide—Talus Lodge is only accessible by helicopter from Canmore, outside of Calgary, or Mount Shark, Alberta. Able to accomodate 12 guests at a time, the two-story lodge is a kick-off point for backcountry adventures like tobogganing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, backcountry skiing, and hiking on the nearby Mount Assiniboine, Mount Sir Douglas, and Mount Birdwood. It’s also almost completely off the grid, relying on wood stoves for heating, propane for cooking, and solar panels for electricity. taluslodge.com

Tikchik Narrows Lodge, Wood-Tikchik State Park, Alaska

a sea plane flying by cabins by a lake

Opened in 1969 as a sport fishing lodge, Tikchik Narrows Lodge maintains its rustic roots—not least of all because it’s more than 300 miles from any connecting roads, making it only accessible by seaplane from Dillingham in southwestern Alaska. You’ll find the main lodge on the tip of a narrow peninsula separating Tikchik and Nuyukuk Lakes, while seven duplex guest cabins dot the shore overlooking Nuyukuk Lake and the Kilbuck mountains. Both the dining area, where you can gorge on Pacific Northwest cuisine and veggies from the on-site greenhouse, and the main lodge boast 360-degree views of the lake, which is known as one of the best fishing spots in the world. tikchiklodge.com

Hailey and Justin Bieber Became Kris Jenner’s New Neighbors With Purchase of $16.6 Million Mansion

It’ll take a 15-minute helicopter ride to get you to this three-story mountain lodge, nestled into the high slopes of Bald Mountain near Glacier National Park. There are 10 private guest rooms decked out in cozy mountain decor—think wood beams, pine tables, and wool throws—although in true mountain style, the bathrooms and showers are shared. Guests can ski right off the alpine plateau towards the Selkirk Mountains and Beaver River Valley or snowshoe and hike along the nearby glacial-fed river before returning home for daily après appetizers and gourmet mountain cuisine, plus thawing in the traditional wood-burning sauna just steps away from the main lodge. purcellmountainlodge.com

Winterlake Lodge, Skwentna, Alaska

a log cabin in the middle of the woods by a lake

Nearly 200 trail miles northwest of Anchorage—along Alaska’s Iditarod Trail—sits the pine-hewn Winterlake Lodge, accessible by float plane in the summer and ski plane in the winter. The properties 15 acres are situated on the western edge of the Alaska Range, a playground where guests can dog-mush, heli-ski, snowshoe, cross-country ski, explore glacial pools, white-water raft, fly fish, rock scramble, and more. The main lodge, which was once an old trapper’s cabin, is the property’s social hub (with a bar, dining area, wellness room, and game area), and six individual guest cabins offer views of the finger lake where the planes land. withinthewild.com

Nimmo Bay, British Columbia, Canada

a collection of cabins overlooking a remote mountain lake

One of the world’s first ecolodges, Nimmo Bay is situated in the middle of the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia and surrounded by the granite foothills of Mt. Stephens, glacial-fed waterfalls, and pristine beaches. It’s so remote, you’ll have to fly to Port Hardy on the tip of Vancouver Island to catch a helicopter or float plane to the property’s private dock. The resort is home to nine solid-wood cabins, six of which are perched on stilts on the edge of the lake, and three of which are tucked up in the forest; the main lodge actually floats on the lake. Go bear or whale watching, paddle boarding, kayaking, windsurfing, hiking, or fly fishing before soaking in the views at one of the cedar hot tubs between the heli-pads and a cascading waterfall. nimmobay.com

North Island, The Seychelles

an aerial shot of crystal blue waters and huts on a beach

No part of the Seychelles, an archipelago of 115 islands off the eastern coast of Africa, would be considered easy to get to, but the North Island (where Prince William and Kate Middleton honeymooned) doesn’t even have a landing dock for boats—a 20-minute private helicopter ride from the capital of Mahé is your only transportation option. The 11 thatched-roof villas on Anse d’Est Beach are the ultimate in island luxury, built from local materials but offering modern luxuries like personal plunge pools, sunken baths, and outdoor showers. And with the beach just steps away, you might run into one or two of the island’s 100-plus-year-old giant tortoises. north-island.com

CMH Bobbie Burns, Alberta, Canada

a cabin by a lake in the mountains

This 26-room ski lodge is no more than a 15-min flight from Calgary, but thanks to its isolated location between the Purcell and Selkirk Mountains, it feels worlds away. It’s not a spot for casual skiers; each morning, guests are flown to the slopes for some seriously hardcore heli-skiing on the area’s 224 runs. Non-skiers can enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the glacial terrain, while the lodge itself boasts a climbing wall, game room, massages, an outdoor whirlpool and sauna, and a thoroughly stocked wine cellar. (The off-season is just as nice, with rolling alpine meadows and rocky ridges to high through.) canadianmountainholidays.com

Kandolhu Maldives, North Ari Atoll, Maldives

huts on stilts over clear ocean water

Seventy miles southwest of Male, the capital of the Maldives, is Kandolhu, a tiny island just 150 by 200 metres. You’ll have to take a 25-minute seaplane ride to get there, and once there, you can stay at one of the 30 villas dotting the island and surrounding Indian Ocean. The locally inspired bungalows all come with either beachfront access or ocean views and modern conveniences like AC, rechargeable torches, and a GoPro to help you document your adventures while snorkeling the crystalline waters right off your sundeck. kandolhu.com

Mica Lodge, British Columbia

a wood and stone lodge set against tall snowy peaks

Another heliskiing property located in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, the five-star Mica Lodge is just north of Revelstoke in British Columbia, via a short helicopter ride from Mica Creek. Twelve suites fill up the main lodge, while heliskiing groups can reserve the log chalet next door, complete with a lounge, hot tub, private massage quarters, and roomy suites—but the max capacity at any time is just 20 guests. Mica boasts 500 square miles of mountains, fresh powder, and fall-line tree-skiing between Tsar Creek, Mount Molson, Kinbasket Valley, and Harvey Cree; when you’re done with that, you can refuel on the resort’s Rocky Mountain cuisine and local brews. micaheli.com

Sheldon Chalet, Denali National Park, Alaska

a small wooden chalet against a sky of northern lights and snowy peaks

The Alaskan wilderness is about as remote as you can get in the U.S., but this five-room property takes that to a new level—perched 6,000 feet above the Don Sheldon Amphitheatre on Ruth Glacier, it’s only accessible by helicopter from Anchorage or Talkeetna. The Sheldon Chalet, which is located just 10 miles from the summit of Denali, is an eco-conscious mountain house offering simple, modern luxury and breathtaking panoramic views of the frozen Alaska Range, where guests can go heli-skiing, fishing at hidden lakes, dog-sledding, rappelling into ice crevasses, and glacier hiking. Even better: There’s no internet or cell service. sheldonchalet.com

The 4 Best Helicopters For Chartered Air Travel

Chartered air travel is more popular than ever. The next time you decide to charter a helicopter for your travel, what are the best helicopters to choose from?

Over the past year and a half, the COVID-19 pandemic has entirely transformed the way millions of travelers view commercial air travel. More than ever, crowded airport terminals and cramped aircraft have led leisure and business travelers to consider chartering a private jet or helicopter, leading to an unprecedented shift toward private airplane and helicopter use.

At Helicopter Express, our fleet of helicopters routinely service charter customers around the Atlanta area, as well as in greater Georgia, Wyoming, Florida and New York.

With commercial aviation rebounding on a slower schedule, a gap between the need for business travel and the commercial industry’s capacity to add flights has ensued, and chartered air travel by helicopter has gained in popularity and frequency.

Moreover, while the largest barrier to entry for private air travel has always been cost, an increase in demand has begun to lower the price tag for chartered flights. According to a New York Times article published last summer , a private one-way ticket to San Francisco from Phoenix, Arizona could cost as little as $150.

The fact is: Flying privately in a helicopter or airplane ensures COVID-19 avoidance and safety by fulfilling the need for social distancing. Booking and boarding a chartered flight is a more streamlined process than traveling through an airport and, altogether, is far safer. Where a passenger on a commercial flight might encounter over 900 touch points —or places of frequent contact—in commercial aviation, the average private travel experience may introduce a passenger to only 30 .

Beyond the health and safety benefits of chartered air travel, flying by helicopter is:

  • Convenient: Helicopter charters allow you to schedule your flight according to your own timetable. You’re able to board the aircraft just minutes before takeoff, fly directly to your destination—not the nearest city—and avoid airport congestion.
  • Accessible: Due to their size, maneuverability, and vertical flight capability, helicopters are capable of accessing and landing in hard-to-reach locations and tight spaces, like mountaintops, ski slopes, parking lots, and building roofs.
  • Fast: Traveling by helicopter circumvents traffic congestion, delays, road closures and construction. The average speed capabilities of Helicopter Express’ four charter aircraft is 132 knots, or about 152 mph.
  • Exclusive: Helicopter charters are one of the most comfortable and luxurious ways to travel. Your flight revolves around you, from personal luggage handlers to complimentary amenities.
  • Scenic: Unlike airplanes, helicopters fly at the perfect height to take in the sights. They offer large, panoramic windows that provide passengers with breathtaking 360-degree views.

So, the next time you decide to charter a helicopter for your travel, what are the best helicopters to choose from?

Cost to Rent a Helicopter: 13 Pricing Examples

travel by helicopter

When looking to book a helicopter flight for a gift, a trip, or begin flight training, knowing how much a helicopter costs is one of the first questions most customers wish to know. Helicopters are not cheap, but once the cost is known and how far the helicopter can travel in that time, can really make renting one seem very affordable.

A small two-seat helicopter with a pilot will cost around $300 per flight hour to rent. For 4-6 seats between $500-$3,000. For 6-12 seats between $2,000 – $10,000. The bigger the helicopter, the more it costs per hour. Tour helicopters usually sell at a set price, per seat for a given tour route.

Here is a rough pricing guide for some of the worlds most popular chartered helicopters:

Most Popular Helicopters Hourly Charter Rate:

The hourly rates listed above are based on the aircraft rental with a pilot and is per hour of time in the air. Once the helicopter lifts off the clock starts ticking. Once the helicopter lands the clock stops and this is known as ‘Air Time’. Some companies charge for something called ‘Flight Time’ which is slightly different and is covered further on in this article. This is one thing you will want to enquire about at the time of booking the flight.

Can You Rent A Helicopter By The Hour or By The Day?

Helicopters are mainly charged by the hour when someone charters them or if they are on a tour helicopter it is usually a set price for that tour route. When you are privately chartering a helicopter the helicopter operator will most likely be charging you by 1/10s of an hour, with a minimum charge that varies from company to company.

travel by helicopter

For instance, if you rented a helicopter and the trip there and back took 1 hour 40 minutes, that would be a flight of 1.7 hours. If the helicopter rental cost was $800 per hour, then you will be looking at a final bill of $1360.

If you plan to take a helicopter in the morning, have it wait for you all day, and then return you home in the evening, the helicopter company may charge a loiter or daily fee on top of the flight time cost. This can range anywhere from zero to a few thousand dollars, so it’s worth asking if this is a trip you plan to do.

The same goes for staying away from base overnight. Expenses for the pilot’s hotel, meals, and aircraft parking will be passed on to the customer just as any loiter fees.

What Factors Affect Helicopter Rental Cost?

When you are looking to rent a helicopter there are a few factors that can significantly bump up the rental cost and if you only wish to take a simple tour flight of your home then a smaller, cheaper helicopter, like those towards the top of my list above will usually be best.

Here are a few things to be aware of when looking to rent a helicopter:

One Engine or Two

This is by far the biggest cost-increasing factor on a helicopter. When renting a helicopter for learning to fly, taking a scenic tour, or a simple charter to go for lunch at a fancy restaurant, then a single-engine helicopter is perfect and keeps the hourly rental cost down.

travel by helicopter

Most single-engine helicopters are either piston-powered or gas-turbine powered, with the pistons being a lot cheaper to rent. Most single-engine helicopters will take anywhere from 1 – 5 passengers plus the pilot, so if you wish to fly more passengers then you will be heading into a helicopter with two engines.

Twin-engine helicopters have lots more power and therefore most of the bigger helicopters have two gas turbine engines onboard. This allows passengers from 5 – 20 to be flown depending on the size of the helicopter used.

The second benefit of a twin-engine helicopter is that they are able to fly in poor weather and have a second engine in case a problem develops with the other. Having a second engine though dramatically increases the rental cost, but may be your only option, especially if you need to land on a rooftop helipad in a downtown location.

The helicopter charter company will be able to fit the best helicopter type for your rental requirements.

One Pilot or Two

Many of the larger, twin-engine helicopters may or can come with two pilots. When the charter is to be flown at night or in poor weather the helicopter company may mandate that two pilots be sat upfront. This increases safety but can also increase the cost.

We all heard the story of the tragic Koby Bryant helicopter accident and by having a second pilot on board the poor decisions made by the single pilot on that flight may have been avoided. Having a second pilot may increase the hourly cost, but the cost of safety really is a no-brainer.

Some states in the U.S. have no sales tax and if you live close to the border of one of these states, renting a helicopter from a company based in this state can save you some money. Taxes added to a bill of several thousand dollars can sting, but if a helicopter company is located close by in the other state then definitely give them a call.

Helicopters are not bound to state lines, they are free to fly anywhere in the country. If you wish to cross the international border then this is something you will have to discuss with the helicopter company as the necessary paperwork will have to be filed and this may incur an additional fee.

Wet Rate Vs. Dry Rate

Wet Rate is the hourly rental cost with fuel included. Dry Rate is the hourly cost without fuel included. If you are unaware of this it could come as a nasty surprise when the visa card machine gets handed to you.

travel by helicopter

At the time of writing this the average cost of jet fuel, for example, is around $1.65 per liter. If you rent an Astar that burns 180l/hr you can have an additional $300 on your bill for each hour you fly. This is how helicopter companies may seem to be able to rent you a helicopter for cheaper than everyone else, so be aware and ask if it’s a wet or dry rate!

Air Time Vs. Flight Time

Briefly mentioned earlier Air Time is when the billing clock starts when the helicopter lifts off the ground to when it lands back on the ground. Flight Time billing starts as soon as the engine/s starts to when the engines stop.

This may not seem a lot but it can add up especially if the helicopter is at a bust airport and has to ground taxi on its wheels for some distance before taking off, or is delayed because of air traffic control.

The difference in billing could be substantial, especially if you are sitting in a Sikorsky S76 that is costing you $100 for every minute the clock ticks!

Landing & Parking Fees

Many airports and heliports charge the helicopter companies every time one of their helicopters lands there. Again, this could not be much but it’s a fee that is usually always passed on to the customer, especially if it’s not at the helicopter’s home location.

travel by helicopter

Charges can range anywhere from free, to $50, to several hundred dollars, so another question to ask at the time of booking if your destination is another airport or helipad.

Loiter & Overnight Fees

Depending on the company, a fee may be charged for having their helicopter and pilot/s spend the day/night waiting for you. This may be a set daily rate or may be based on the amount of time they have to wait for you. Taking a helicopter to a river fishing for the day, for example, may have no fee, especially if the helicopter owner loves fishing and joins in!

Another question to ask at the time of booking.

Can You Rent a Helicopter For Prom?

I have flown many groups of young ladies, gentlemen, and couples into their prom, and it’s always a fantastic experience, especially for those who have never flown in a helicopter before. I remember one young lady had made her entire dress out of Duct Tape! It was incredible and had taken her days to create!

The most popular helicopter rented for prom is a Robinson R44. It is a 4 seat helicopter costing around $500 per flight hour and is able to fly the pilot and 3 passengers. If there are 4 passengers, then a Bell 206 Jet Ranger is a great option but will cost around $1200 per hour.

Depending on where the prom is taking place will dictate if a helicopter is able to land close enough to ensure the entrance pizazz that many promgoers wish to seek. Some venues will prevent a helicopter from landing at all so a simple phone call with the helicopter charter company will start the planning.

Here are a few tips you will need to be aware of when planning your prom flight:

  • Prepare the helicopter booking weeks ahead of time
  • Schools and venues are usually private property and may require the helicopter company to get permission to land there – If you have any contact details for the school or venue you can pass them on to the helicopter company to assist them
  • Some venues or the local aviation authority may not grant the helicopter permission to land there, so be prepared
  • Ensure you have someone to take photos of you with the helicopter – It’s a memorable occasion
  • If you wish to have drone footage of your landing, ensure the videographer liaises with the pilot before the flight commences
  • Pick a helicopter company close to the event’s location to save flight time
  • The rental cost will include the flight there AND back to the hanger
  • See if any other friends wish to fly to prom and see if you can strike a deal with the charter company. Some helicopter companies have a minimum flight time rental cost
  • Plan for an alternate means of transport to Prom in case the weather is too poor to fly
  • If you have an extravagant dress, have a practice session with the helicopter in the hangar before the event for getting in and out of the machine gracefully!
  • Liaise with the helicopter company and venue staff about where to land the helicopter. Walking across a muddy field is not the entrance many passengers wish to have!
  • Allow plenty of time before your scheduled arrival time at prom. A safety brief from the pilot will be required before the flight commences

Flying to prom is a great way to increase the memories of such a special event and with a little forward planning, a helicopter ride is a great option. Many of the prom flights I have done have been arranged by parents and have come as a complete surprise to the young guests, just be sure none of them have a terrifying fear of flying before booking!

The helicopter company will take care of all the aviation permissions but if you have the contact details of the landowner this can save them time and working with the company weeks in advance will ensure there are no last minute hiccups before the big day!

Can You Rent a Helicopter For a Wedding?

When that extra special touch or that extra mile is required for the big day then a ride to the alter in a helicopter is a great solution! Whether the helicopter ride is to be used before the wedding ceremony, after the ceremony, or a combination of, there is a helicopter that can meet those requirements.

The most popular helicopter rented for weddings is a Robinson R44. It is a 4 seat helicopter costing around $500 per flight hour and is able to fly the pilot and 3 passengers. For more passengers, helicopters start to cost from $1000 per flight hour and up. The more seats, the more it costs.

travel by helicopter

Some of the most common scenarios that helicopters are used for weddings are:

  • Moving passengers to the wedding venue before the ceremony. The bride, bride’s father, and maid of honor are typical passengers.
  • Used to ferry the bride and groom away to a separate location for the celebrations or to begin their honeymoon.
  • Passenger ferrying. For the ultimate luxury, a helicopter or helicopters can be chartered to fly guests from A to B. This is especially popular if the wedding venue is on an island!

Flying in a helicopter to a wedding is a fantastic memory to add to that special day but like a prom, there are a few things you need to be aware of to ensure the special day goes without a hitch:

  • Get planning the helicopter ride weeks in advance to allow enough time for all the details to be arranged
  • If you have property, a helicopter can be arranged to pick up passengers there and take them to the ceremony
  • Ensure the wedding location will allow a helicopter to land and park for however long you require
  • Many venues have had a helicopter land there before and may have a designated area that helicopters can land at
  • Have the helicopter company inspect the proposed landing area/s before the wedding day to look for potential hazards
  • Helicopters create ALOT of wind. Tables, chairs, flowers, decorations, and gazebos can be ruined by the presence of a helicopter – Ensure the landing area is far enough away!
  • If the ground is soft or mushy see about getting a walkway placed so the passengers can walk from the helicopter and remain pristine
  • Ensure the landing area is not dusty. Parking lots, yards, and fields can turn your guest’s perfect attire and hairstyles into sand and grass-filled disasters.
  • Connect the pilot with the photographers’ details. A keen photographer can cause so many problems to the pilot!
  • If the bride’s dress has lots of volume, be sure to have a trial run at getting into and out of the helicopter at the hanger before the big day – A dress may be too big or awkward to fit!
  • Ask the pilot to dress in a suit and look like a wedding guest – Dirty jeans and a T-shirt are not appropriate!
  • Have a backup on how to get to the venue in case the weather turns poor at the last moment and the helicopter cannot fly
  • Leave lots of time before the helicopter is due to lift off to ensure there is no rush and the flight is as memorable as the rest of the day!

I have flown many guests into weddings and these are some of the best tips I have found to help the day go as planned and to not have the helicopters’ rotor wash destroy the immaculate venue! Also, keep uncle Dave and his ‘wig that everyone knows he wears’, away from the helicopter – I have seen more than one hairpiece dislodged on approach, and it’s always an histerical moment for everyone but the poor fella!

I was going to have my best man fly my wife and her father into our wedding at a beautiful golf course, but the course manager would only let him land in the driving range and not on the course. Because he was my best man it would have meant leaving the helicopter in the driving range and the course manager would not keep the range closed for the ceremony. Because of this, we had to scrap that idea!

Just like the example for my own wedding, sometimes a helicopter ride to a wedding is just not meant to be. If it can be worked into the day then perfect, if not, then other modes of transport can be just as memorable.

Renting a helicopter can cost as little as $250-$300 an hour which makes this great for training. The cheaper the helicopter the more basic it is, the fewer people it can carry, and the slower it flies, but you get to experience the thrill of flying.

Depending on your needs and budget you will always be able to find a helicopter to suit. They are not cheap, but they serve a purpose and when time or no other means are available then renting a helicopter may be the better option.

From Kobe Bryant to the Kardashians: Inside the Lives of People Who Travel By Private Helicopter

Kobe Bryant was just one of many celebrities who frequently travel by chopper

On Sunday, January 26, a helicopter carrying basketball legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gigi and seven other passengers went down in the hills of Calabasas, California , killing everyone on board.

The helicopter planned to fly a short distance — from John Wayne Airport in Orange County to Camarillo Airport in Ventura County — so that the passengers aboard could get to Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks for a youth basketball tournament.

This was far from the first time Bryant had traveled by helicopter . According to the LA Times , the former Los Angeles Lakers player was known for leaving a chartered helicopter at John Wayne Airport for his use. Bryant previously shared that he began using helicopters while he played for the Lakers as a way to spend more time with his family — and less time stuck in traffic.

Although his tragic death has brought speculation about the safety of this mode of transportation , it’s more common than many might think among celebrities and others.

In the wake of the accident, PEOPLE spoke to experts in the field about how typical private helicopter travel is among stars and in general. Here’s what we found out.

Who travels by private helicopter?

Private helicopter travel is typical among celebrities and the über-wealthy for traveling short distances,” Eric Spitzer, the President of Spitzer Helicopter Leasing in Woodland Hills, California, tells PEOPLE. “Longer trips are always in private jets,” he says.

Many celebrities have posted photos of their travel on helicopters on social media, including Beyonce and Jay-Z, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Bella and Gigi Hadid , Selena Gomez , Billie Eilish, Madonna and the Kardashian-Jenner family.

Kylie Jenner , in fact, shared in an Instagram story that she had actually flown with her niece Dream Kardashian on the exact helicopter — and with the same pilot — that went down in Bryant’s crash, a Sikorsky S-76B decorated with Bryant’s Mamba logo.

The New York Times reported that actor Lorenzo Lamas and singer Ashanti have both posted photos in the helicopter in recent years.

That said, helicopters are not exclusive to the rich and famous — helicopter travel is becoming more common among average consumers in larger cities as a way to beat traffic and save time, says Dr. Hassan Shahidi, the President and CEO of the non-profit Flight Safety Foundation (FSF).

“We’re starting to see more of those operations,” says Shahidi. “And not only celebrities, but regular people use them.”

Where is helicopter travel most common?

Helicopter travel is most common in larger cities in the U.S., like New York and Los Angeles — especially those known for having lots of traffic. These metropolitan cities have various companies that charter helicopters, and various helipads/airports for flying in and out.

Island Express Helicopters , the company that owned Bryant’s ride, is just one of many helicopter operators that charter flights in L.A.

Even on-demand ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft have been getting in on helicopter travel in recent years, especially to and from busy airports.

Why would you choose to take a helicopter over a different type of transportation?

Typically, people choose to use a helicopter to fly shorter distances, while a regular airplane is used to fly longer distances.

“You can’t take an airplane very short distances. It’s very difficult,” says Shahidi. “They take off and land more often; they’re for very short distances, like 10, 20, 30 miles. They fly at very low altitudes and they’re basically on demand, meaning they’re not scheduled. You want to go somewhere, you get a charter helicopter and you go.”

What are the costs associated with private helicopter travel?

“The cost of [purchasing] a helicopter can range from $300,000 to $40 million depending on its size and age,” says Spitzer. “Leasing is lower than purchasing because the cost of entry is much lower, similar to a car lease versus a car purchase. Chartering will cost as low as $400 an hour and as much as $4,000 an hour, depending on the ship.”

Do you need to hire a pilot if you’re flying by private helicopter?

If a passenger charters a helicopter, the cost of the pilot’s service is typically included in the price, and a licensed pilot will be assigned to them. If a passenger were to lease or purchase their own helicopter, however, they generally have to hire a pilot.

According to Spitzer, pilots usually charge by the day — typically between $300 and $1,000.

What are the differences between owning, leasing and chartering a helicopter?

When one charters a helicopter, everything comes included — riders simply board the aircraft and go from point A to point B.

Owning a helicopter means the buyer is in complete control of the use and maintenance of the aircraft — and all the costs that come with them.

When someone leases a helicopter, they sign a longer term contract with the leasee, allowing them full use of the aircraft until the lease term ends. While the initial cost will be less than if they were to purchase a helicopter, they still incur the costs of maintenance that come with owning a helicopter. “Leasing doesn’t get you away from the headaches of owning a helicopter, it’s just a lower cost of entry,” Spitzer says.

Pilot injured after helicopter crashes into Key Biscayne

A pilot was transported to the hospital after a helicopter crashed into Key Biscayne Saturday afternoon.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, a Robinson R-44 helicopter crashed into the water near Key Biscayne around 1:50 p.m. after the pilot reported engine issues.

"I saw a helicopter flying quite low, perhaps 5 to 10 feet above the water", witness Rollie Gonzalez told NBC6.

Only the pilot was on board, the FAA confirmed.

Records show the helicopter belongs to a company called Drax Enterprises LLC.

According to Miami-Dade Fire, the pilot was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

"It looked like it had some form of mechanical failure as I saw the tail end of the helicopter side to side, and then I just saw it take a nosedive into the water", described another witness.

Officials have not released any additional details as to what caused the helicopter to crash or the identity of the pilot.

"It was great to see within 30 seconds or a minute there was already a first responder at the helicopter recovering the pilot from the from the water," said a beachgoer.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.

The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide any updates.

This is a developing story. Check back with NBC6 for updates.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A number of U.S. Army helicopters could be seen flying through the sky throughout the weekend, but there is no cause for concern.

According to the Lehigh Valley International Airport, approximately 70 helicopters are using the airport as a staging area for refueling.

The helicopters are flying in from Fort Drum, New York and are headed to the Port of Philadelphia in an effort to move military equipment.

The exercise is slated to take place Saturday through Monday, from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day.

The arrivals and departures for refueling will take place in the area of Hangar 7 at the airport in Hanover Township, Lehigh County. This is just south of the airport's runways.

There is no public access to the airfield.
