Over the door hooks

The hubs and I recently returned from our 2 week trip in England and Scotland. I ofcourse, now have an upper respiratory infection. Once I am well, I plan to write a more detailed trip report as well as some smaller posts of some things we found really useful or really liked. In the useful category, are these over the door hooks we bought at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. They were great! No room you ever stay in has enough hooks for your belongings. If you're going to stay in an EasyHotel as we did in Edinburgh, they make life so much easier and they barely take up any space when packing.

Eh, what can I say... I like to hang everything up! When I travel with my husband, we always have our coats, our sweaters, pants, and our toiletry bags. That's at least 8 hooks and most places don't provide that many. Personal preference I think. I just found these over the door hooks to be super cheap and very handy.

I think this is a brilliant idea! Could have used one the last few days in London. I really wanted to hang my mostly dry pants in the open instead of the shower where there was not a lot of air circulation. This would have been grand!

I've been a few places without enough hooks - one was on the Amalfi Coast and the shower was one of those combo shower/bathroom things where the whole bathroom pretty much got wet...one hook on the door to try and hang your clothes on (shirt, pants, under garments, socks...and the towels!) and you really couldn't put things anywhere else lest they got wet.

Trying to find somewhere to even put your towel while trying to get your clothes back on (in the sink they go!)...and I wasn't going to streak thru the apartment as my mom was travelling with hubby and I and usually was sitting at the kitchen table, which was between the bathroom and the bedroom. An over the door hook would have been brilliant there.

I find even bathrooms in general have a dearth of hooks to hang your clothes - they usually end up on the floor (nope...ugh...dirty) or have to sit things on the toilet lid or counter. Just put a few coat hooks on the wall so we can hang our clothes up!!

Why not just use the hangers in the closet? For wet items, I have a ultra-lightweight clothesline.

You're right Cynthia, those hooks are super helpful! I've been using them for 14 yrs. They're useful even when staying at friends houses. I also take several over the door hooks that are made to hold 4-5 hangers with clothes on them... if i do sink washing I hang clothes on a hanger on those hooks which helps them dry and they're not in anyone's way.

Hi Cynthia, that is a good idea. I use the hooks at home to hang my "nearly dry" stuff but never thought about taking them on a trip. Will add one to my packing list!

The trick for me is to not forget to take the hooks off the door when I leave. :)

It's a great idea, especially for those hotels with hangars that must be removed from their hook in order to take them out of the closet - and then you have a hanger with no hook!

To remember to take them with you, try hanging your purse or keys on one.

The solution for all these and many other little day-to-day travel problems is a combo carabiner and hook that looks pretty freaky, but is a lifesaver. Even some of the most minimal minimalists pack one—and use it in daily life—because it solves so many little problems all at once.

A Hook/Carabiner for Travel

A weird, cheap, well-designed little gadget that more travelers should consider is the Gear Aid Heroclip . It is available in four sizes that support different weights; the small Heroclip is the best size for most travelers as it supports up to 22kg / 50 lbs. and is thus sufficient for hanging most bags, purses, toiletry kits, etc. The Heroclip:

• Functions just like a carabiner and takes up the same space
• Also has a hook the swivels out enabling you to hang a clipped item
• Has a rubber tip that grips surfaces, allowing you to also hang stuff from a table edge, door frame, etc.
• Is lightweight and ends up going with you everywhere, ready for use

There are a few other travel-oriented carabiners covered in this article, but none that match this smart, smart, smart design. I get a little randy for it, yes.

Why We Should Hang Things When We Travel

The raison d’être of the Heroclip is that our surroundings don’t have enough places to set stuff down. Especially when we’re on the road, with a (hopefully very small) bit of stuff. That stuff needs to go somewhere and many places, especially the cheap, funky, and delightfully oddball ones, don’t have pre-designed solutions for us vagabonds to place our stuff.

When we travelers hang stuff , we:

• Take up less space in our environments (on counters/floors/desks/bathroom shelves/sinks/shower caddies/camp grounds/etc.), often making us better guests for those who are gracious enough to take us in
• Keep our stuff from getting dirty and/or infected with ants, bed bugs, cooties, etc.
• Are more organized , especially with bags that open out to let you see contents while hanging; we have less of a need to unpack and spill everything out on the floor, making us also more ready to pick up and continue our travels

These general rules apply to lots of different sorts of situations, as we’re about to see…

Travel and Life Problems We Can Solve with a Heroclip

So in this endeavor to take up less space, stay clean, and be organized, here’s what the Heroclip—with its sturdy carabiner clip on one side and its rotating hook on the other—can do:

• You can hang an entire trekking backpack or other luggage from its top handle ; this can be useful in a hostel next to a bunk bed, but I’ve used the Heroclip for this purpose as well when staying in hotels, apartment rentals, and friends’ places. In particular if your pack completely opens up in the front panel (like the rolling backpacks we recommend ), this prevents you from needing to unload everything while also not taking up floor or table space.
• In bars, cafés, and restaurants, it’s easier to hang a daypack or purse from a counter or table edge with the Heroclip, thanks to the hook’s rubberized tip. This ensures your bag stays close at hand, where it won’t get stolen, and that it doesn’t get dirty on the floor or take up space on your table or lap.
• When anywhere, you now have an instant coat hook .
• Hanging up your toiletries in a bathroom ensures easy access while also making them easy to carry away. If you’re sharing a bathroom, you don’t want to take up too much shelf/sink/counter space in order to be a good guest. And regardless, hanging your toiletry kit keeps it from getting wet or dirty in such situations. All of the large and small toiletry bags we recommend of course come with built-in hooks, but I have still used my Heroclip on occasion when a larger hook or one with a rubberized grippy tip was called for.
• For an improvised party, particularly outside, a good travel Bluetooth speaker like this one can kick out sound in all directions evenly, and so a Heroclip is useful for hanging the speaker in a central spot .
• While not a substitute for a good travel clothesline , the Heroclip can be useful on occasion to hang dry a wet item like shoes.
• When camping or on wilderness adventures , you often need to hang all sorts of things: lanterns, food and trash (in areas with bears and other animals), etc. Those doing hunting, fishing, and some sports and games use them to hang gear.
• I clip my favorite collapsible water bottle to the outside of my daypack ; it is generally useful to have a clip for such add-ons that you end up needing to attach outside of your pack for convenience.
• Clipped to the top of a child or teen’s backpack or rolling backpack , the Heroclip can be used to hang the youth backpack from a tree, playground equipment, etc, ensuring that it remains close at hand while playing and less likely to get lost. In high schools, the Heroclip can help if a locker’s interior hooks are too small for the backpack’s top loop.
• Parents of young children use the Heroclip to hang purses, diaper bags, etc. from strollers .
• The mini Heroclip works as a key clip , meaning you can hang your keys on any door or object, say at eye level by an exit, if you’re the kind of person to forget them. It’s the ultimate way to never lose your keys.

Downside to the Heroclip

It’s a bit expensive. There are cheaper carabiners and clips designed for travel as discussed below , though nothing comparable with the Heroclip’s smart design and solid build.

Fortunately, you likely only need one or two Heroclips for travel. If you have a lot of things to hang, get a set of cheap carabiners .

How the Heroclip Works

It can take some users a moment to figure out how the Heroclip opens up, though once you see the company’s instructional video below, you’ll never forget what to do.

Alternatives to the Heroclip

The following are cheaper options that can fulfill some of the same needs as the Heroclip:

Nite Ize, which makes all sorts of smart travel and outdoorsy gadgets , has a Set of Three Dual-Locking S-Biners in various sizes. They’re not good for hanging things from surfaces that don’t already have a post, ring, or hook, but they are good for connecting one thing to another and are solidly built.

These adjustable velcro straps with carabiners are marketed as being for baby strollers but are really suitable for hanging all sorts of things, and are cheap. Velcro is not going to hold super heavy weights, but it is a flamboyantly loud, useful, flexible, and yet somehow underrated technology.

For another take on the multiuse keychain, the Tacray Carabiner Multitool has a carabiner, loop, bottle opener, mini-ruler, and screwdriver.

The 8Timber Gear Hook is a simple plastic hook with a cord loop for hanging things anywhere. It claims a max load of 50 lbs / 22 kg.

This is a nice over the door coat hook. My only dislike is that the company branded a very ugly logo in a visible part of the hook. It's not a sticker and does not easily come off. This is a nice over the door coat rack. It’s very different from what I have seen before. You need to put it together once you get it, though. My only complain, and that’s why I gave it 4 stars, is because if the door is too thick it won’t fit. I ordered this coat rack so I could use it over my office’s door and I didn’t fit. The jury is out on this one. The idea is good, but it doesn’t work that well. It’s really tight for on my cabinet door - wouldn’t fit some. So, I found that it’s better hanging on my farm sink. Are portable door locks even necessary? Hotel rooms and Airbnbs already have door locks, right? The issue isn’t the locks themselves, but who might also have access to those locks. I travel a lot for work and never go anywhere with a portable door lock.

Portable Door Locks For Airbnbs

Besides your Airbnb host, who else has access to your temporary living space? Cleaners? Contractors? Neighbors? Maintenance people? HOA staff? Maybe even previous gusts? Do you know how often your Airbnb host changes the passcode for the door?

My former boss got robbed at an Airbnb in Jamaica. In the middle of the night, two guys came into their rental and robbed them while they were sleeping. Not wanting to risk an armed confrontation, my boss pretended to be asleep during the robbery. In addition to his phone and laptop, the thieves also took his passport and wallet.

The robbery only lasted a few mins, but that’s all it took to turn his weak-long vacation turned into a frustrating exercise in replacing travel documents and credit cards. The Jamaican police eventually caught the thieves. It turns out that they were the two boyfriends of the cleaning ladies. They owed money to a local drug dealer and got desperate enough to rob the Airbnb.

NOTE: Don’t forget to double-check for  spy cameras  and hidden peepholes in your Airbnb rentals! Everything from clocks to smoke detectors can have hidden cameras inside!

Portable Door Locks For Hotels

I used to feel a little safer in hotels, but recent experiences have changed my mind. In just the last several months, hotel staff have accidentally given me keycards to occupied hotel rooms… twice!

The first time was at the Aloft in Durham, North Carolina. Luckily no one was in the room at the time. I walked in, saw clothes and suitcases, and quickly left the room and went back to the lobby check-in desk.

The second time, I wasn’t as lucky. The hotel staff at a Holiday Inn Express in New York City gave me a keycard to someone else’s room… and they were still inside! There was a woman in the bathroom wearing nothing but a towel. I quickly ran out of the room and into the stairwell. I didn’t want to risk waiting for the elevator and getting into a fight with an angry husband or boyfriend. Unfortunately my room was on the 21st floor. I walked down a few flights carrying my suitcase and then caught the elevator back down to the lobby. So embarrassing!

Addalock ‘s clip and chain style door lock ($10 via Amazon) is the most popular type of portable door lock. When you search online, you’ll find dozens of imitators, but Addalock claims to be the “original”.

This style lock is small enough to fit into your pocket and easy enough for anyone to use. It works by placing the metal plate against the deadbolt. You then close the door with the plate in between the door and door frame and attach the plastic clip. Once secured into place, the plastic clip prevents an inward opening door from opening.

• Pros : Easy Install: No tools are required for installation; Compatibility: You can use this model in most hotels, Airbnbs, schools, rentals, etc.; Portable: This model is lightweight, small, and easily fits into a pocket.
• Cons : Durability: The plastic can become cracked, especially after repeated forced entry attempts; Deadbolt Size Restrictions: This model works with average door types, but not larger deadbolts or door shapes.
• Who Should Buy This? Anyone on a budget who wants to use a portable door lock to secure an inward opening door with a deadbolt.

More durable than similar models that use a plastic clip, the(Amazon link) Urgeeo Portable Door Lock ($15 via Amazon) uses aluminum alloy and stainless steel instead of plastic. Even though the plastic version is more popular, for a few dollars more, it might be worth getting a model made from stronger materials.

You can also use the Urgeeo Portable Door Lock to break glass or as a personal defense weapon.

• Pros: Durability: Upgrade door security device made of aluminum alloy and stainless steel material, makes Portable door lock more durable; Multi-Use: The Urgeeo can also be used to break glass or as a brass knuckles-like weapon; Style: It comes in different colors.
• Cons: Price: The stronger metal materials slightly increase the price of this model.
• Who Should Buy This? Anyone who likes the clip and chain design but is willing to spend a few more dollars for a metal clip instead of the plastic version.

The biggest advantage of the(Amazon link) Jian Boland Door Lock ($12 via Amazon) , is it doesn’t require a deadbolt. Butterfly style door locks can be used in between the door and the door frame at any part of the door.

These locks work great, but they have a couple potential drawbacks that you need to consider before buying.

If someone tries to forcefully open a door while the butterfly clip is attached, then it can severely dent the door. That’s probably not a concern for a hotel room, but if you plan on using this lock on a home bedroom door, then you might want to try a different model.

Another potential issue is compatibility. To secure a room, the gap between the door and the door frame must be greater than 2mm (if your door does not have a door gap, it may not be suitable for you).

• Pros: Doesn’t Require A Deadbolt: If you are trying to secure a door that doesn’t have a deadbolt, then you will want to consider this model; Portable: This is one of the smallest portable door locks on the market and only about the size of a small cookie; Very Easy Installation: To install this door lock, just insert it between the door frame and twist.
• Cons : Damage Potential: Because of their flat metal design, these locks are more likely to cause damage a door during a forced entry attempt. Probably only a concern if you are using this lock in a more permanent situation, like a dorm room or bedroom; Compatibility: Thicker metal design may not fit in between tight door gaps.
• Who Should Buy This? Anyone who needs to secure an inward opening door that doesn’t have a deadbolt.

Similar in design to butterfly style door locks, the(Amazon link) Travelers Safety Lock ($99 via Amazon) has softer plastic pads that help prevent damage to the door or door frame. Made from aircraft-grade aluminum, this is the strongest lock on our list.

• Pros:  Durable: Made from high-grade metal materials; Protective Padding: Intergraded pads help prevent damage to door or door frame.
• Cons : Expensive: At $99, this lock is 10x more expensive than the average price of the other portable travel locks on this list.
• Who Should Buy This? If you have serious security concerns, this this is the lock for you. It’s as strong as a permanent door lock.

Unlike the metal and plastic clip models, the (eBay link) (eBay link) (eBay link) (eBay link)(eBay link) safety buckle door lock ($9 via eBay) only has a single locking piece that lays against the bottom of the deadbolt. This design makes it more compatible with different types of deadbolts.

Another advantage of the safety buckle lock is its compatibility with thicker doors. The buckle is adjustable and can easily be secured in different door thickness settings.

• Pros: Compatibility: Compatible with all types of deadbolts and thicker doors; Ease Of Use: Buckle design is easy to install; Lightweight: Smaller and thinner than other pocket door lock models.

• Cons: Durability: Plastic material may not hold up over time.
• Who Should Buy This? Anyone who has a thicker door or thinks the plastic or metal clip style locks are too hard to install. Also requires an inward opening door.

The(Amazon link) Calslock Portable Door Lock ($30 via Amazon) has a unique style. At first glance, it looks like a miniature brass chainsaw (it even has a serrated edge). It may look cute, but the Calslock is a sturdy portable door lock that’s also easy to use.

To secure a door using the Calslock, simply hook the lock into the deadbolt’s door plate and squeeze and pull back the slide bar when the door is open. Once the door is closed, squeeze the slide bar and push it against the door, then release.

• Pros: Metal Materials: The Calslock is made using stainless steel and solid brass. Your door will probably break before this does; One-Piece Design: There are no detachable parts like clips or buckles to lose.
• Cons: Price: Because this lock is made using brass, it is more expensive that most of the locks on this list; Rough Edges: The Calslock’s sharp jagged edge makes this lock unsuitable for households with young children who are tall enough to access the door handle.
