travel emoji text

2020 was a difficult year. If you made it past 2020, then you deserve a pat on the back! As we all know, the arrival of the new year comes hand in hand with some often asked (and sometimes dreaded) questions. “What are your New Year’s resolutions?” “Do you have any resolutions?”

If you love to travel, your answer would probably be a dream destination with a cute travel emoji or two at the end, like the 🧳 Luggage emoji or the 🏕️ Camping emoji, along with a comment about how going to your dream country might never happen, due to the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak.

Virtual Mountain Trips

Travel agencies and travel companies know it’s hard not being able to physically visit your favorite hiking or backpacking spots. There’s nothing quite like the feel of fresh mountain air on one’s lips, and many online travel services sympathize.

Woman with glasses of virtual reality. Future technology. Modern imaging technology.

Bearing that in mind, in order to bring back a semblance of that experience to their clients, some travel companies have created special virtual tours and adventures so that their loyal customers will still be able to experience those breathtakingly beautiful mountaintops from anywhere in the world.

While the views of the oceans and the islands are always beautiful, many hikers will agree that nothing beats a gorgeous sunrise. We won’t disagree with that! If you think a virtual mountain tour will somewhat cure your insatiable desire to go back to the great outdoors, why not go through with it?

Globe Emoji

Another popular travel emoji is a globe. Globes are very similar to maps, but unlike maps, they do not distort the surface that they portray unless they want to scale it down. If you’d like to add a globe to your virtual travel posts, emails, and texts, there are three globes to choose from to represent each continent. Why don’t we go over them one by one:

Baggage Claim

A sign most travelers miss, one that is definitely not part of any current virtual travel, is the 🛄 Baggage Claim sign. Our last emoji, the final symbol to round up the travel emoji list, is the 🛂 Passport Control emoji. You’ll see this symbol in topics related to immigration control and passport checks at international borders.

How to use the 🛂 Passport Control emoji :

– All the red tape, immigration control, and passport checks you need to go through to get to another country is an aspect of traveling I really don’t miss 🛂 – I am glad that the Mobile Passport Control partnership program helps streamline a traveler’s entry to the United States. But because of the Coronavirus, the program isn’t as effective. Passengers still experience a lot of immigration control and passport checks 🛂 at the airport.

Travel Vacation Holiday Destination Journey Digital Concept

As our freedom of movement continues to be restricted as a result of COVID-19, virtual travel seems set to continue. Virtual trips aren’t for everyone though, going on a digital adventure may seem corny or even depressing to some. Truth be told, digital tours and travel emoji lists will never compare to the real thing, the actual physical experience of traveling, but it definitely has its own charms, and for people who can’t afford to travel, it’s as close as they can get to their dream destination.

Hope For A Better Tomorrow

In millennial communications, Emoji is moreโž• than a fad. Think๐Ÿค” of them, moreโž• of a primitive language๐Ÿ’ฌ. The tiny, emotional characters๐Ÿ”ฃ represent the digital world's๐Ÿ—บ first๐Ÿฅ‡ language๐Ÿ’ฌ that๐Ÿ‘‰ was born๐Ÿฃ, designed๐ŸŽจ to addโž• emotional meaning to flat text๐Ÿ“ elsewhere. Since they๐Ÿ‘‰ first๐Ÿฅ‡ made an appearance on๐Ÿ”› Japanese cell๐Ÿ“ฑ devices in the lateโŒš '90s, emoji have been common, and they've become a staple of the wayโ›– people๐Ÿ‘ช interact in the pastโฐ few decades. They๐Ÿ‘‰ pop up๐Ÿ†™ in news๐Ÿ†• releases and business emails and messages.

The Importance of Travel Emojis

Travel emojis are one of the most important communication modes that people use to express their feelings. Your tweets or email should have a travel emoji or vehicle emoji to add a splash of color or a blip of personality. The choices for emoji are almost infinite, which means that you will still keep your readers on their toes.

A study shows that most people only to travel to share the trip on Facebook or Instagram. This is why it's curial to accompany the post with the perfect๐Ÿ‘Œ emoji.

Emojis not only liven up the interactions, but they also can decide when there is a lack of proper vocabulary or physical signs. Your contact with your body language and facial expressions is crucial to emphasize, but technical advancements make it a difficult challenge.

However, for both the reader and the sender, emojis make the job less intimidating and more entertaining. They are a more complex type of text-based, informal communication and the reader is engaged.

To fully understand and feel involved in all conversations, physical interaction is important, and emojis are the interactive reaction of the 21st Century to the fact that we cannot all be there. To express emotions , emojis are important, something that words do not express. However, in the intellectual world or in a sense that requires an authoritative voice, they do not hold meaning.

Emojis are intended to be enjoyable, lighthearted, and easily and in a manner that๐Ÿ‘‰ words do not๐Ÿคž often express a full๐Ÿ”‹ variety of emotions.

Whenever it comes to communication in the 21st Century, interpretation is vast. Emojis both have the potential to make your basic text or email easier to view. For instance, it seems like you are irritated or sound impatient when you answer with "Ok..." It creates less concern and indicates a true comprehension from the sender when you use emojis and just answer with "Ok... โ‡ ".

Why are We Using Emojis?

There is no mark for these characters , but their description is up to those that use them. But since they mostly telegraph a thought or feeling which is quickly recognized, they are often understood in context.

They aid us in our conversation to bring sound and consistency.

In an infinite number of forms, emojis can be used, but in my experience, these are some of the most common:

  • By adding sarcasm or satire, to lighten the mood
  • To make a blast soften
  • To discover a more effective means of expressing oneself
  • To connect when words fail us

I tried Spotify's AI feature to make playlists with text and emoji prompts. It's impressive but I'll still make my own.

  • Spotify has launched AI Playlist, a new feature that makes playlists with a text or emoji prompt.
  • The feature is in beta mode and only available in the UK and Australia for now.
  • I think it's the coolest feature to come out of Spotify since the end-of-year "Wrapped" roundup.

Insider Today

I've always been a big music nerd and even took up DJing as a hobby a few years ago.

So when I saw that Spotify launched AI Playlist in beta for Premium users in the UK and Australia this week, I was excited because I knew it could save me time making playlists.

I've spent countless hours on Spotify discovering new music and carefully curating my own playlists. But it's time-consuming to create different ones by genre, what ones would work well together in a mix, and others to soundtrack almost every mood and situation.

I tried the new feature to see how easy and fast it was, and if it could nail my musical preferences. Here's how it went:

How it works

When you open the Spotify app, tap the "Your Library" and the "+" button. It then gives you three options: "Playlist" to build your own, "Blend" to make a shared playlist with friends, and "AI Playlist" to "turn your ideas into playlists using AI."

Once you tap "AI Playlist," a text box appears where you can enter a prompt โ€” even by entering just an emoji.

Within five seconds it can put together a playlist made up of 30 songs based on what it thinks you'll like. You can edit the list by swiping left on songs to remove them and tapping "Create" to save the playlist.

It made 10 playlists in under a minute

Spotify said in its press release announcing the feature that you can use prompts that reference "places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, even emojis." So I did just that.

I punched in a bunch of text prompts to see how it fared. First, I wanted to see how well it would respond to emojis and if it could identify a mood and themed playlist that reflected it. I instructed the tool to make one based on the emoji of a face holding back tears.

Related stories

Within seconds, it made a playlist called "Resonant Emotions" that's "filled with emotionally charged tracks" from well-known artists like Adele, Hozier, and Amy Winehouse.

Then I gave it the following prompt: "Make me a minimal tech playlist with artists I've never discovered." It put together a list of songs I had never heard before, but loved once I played them.

I then asked for a playlist based on the vibes of Joseph Cooper, the main character in the movie "Interstellar." And sure enough, it worked. It made one called "Cooper's Essence," which was filled with some ethereal tracks, as well as a few songs that I felt were a little off from the prompt I fed it.

I also wanted it to make one "based on lion vibes" and it included a bunch of self-empowering songs. You can also refine the playlist with another prompt, so I typed for it to remove hip-hop songs. Strangely, it responded, "Let's keep it inclusive instead. Try something else."

It is still in beta mode, so it's not entirely perfect. For the most part, the feature nailed it in terms of pulling up songs based on a short description of what I'm looking for.

It won't make offensive playlists

It also has some safeguards built into it to prevent possible misuse. As Spotify says in its press release, "We also have measures in place around prompts that are offensiveโ€”so please prompt responsibly!"

I thought I'd test out the effectiveness of those measures. When I told it to make a "white power" playlist, it said it "can't help" with that topic.

When I asked to make one for diversity, equity, and inclusion, it included songs such as Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis's "Same Love."

Here are some of the other prompts I used to generate playlists:

Make me one based on the vibes of Sardinia in Italy

For when I'm feeling introspective

To get me hyped up for a workout

Based on the color yellow

Help me concentrate

Getting ready to go "out-out"

It's a game changer

Overall, I think it's the coolest feature to come out of Spotify since Wrapped , the end-of-year breakdown of a user's listening habits.

AI Playlist is a great way to save time when I want to make a last-minute playlist for an event or when I'm traveling.

It also takes out a lot of the work in finding new artists or songs that I like, but I would still put together my own playlists full of songs I've found myself too.

Tradwives, stay-at-home girlfriends and the dream of feminine leisure

Itโ€™s always inspiring when citizens of the vast and disparate internet find something to unite them, and in late March, the unifying force was hatred for an essay, published in the Cut, called โ€œ The Case for Marrying an Older Man .โ€ It was written by a woman who had done just that: Grazie Sophia Christie spent her undergraduate years at Harvard sneaking into receptions for MBA candidates where she hoped to bag a more established male before her โ€œfiercest advantageโ€ โ€” her youth โ€” disappeared and rendered her common. After some trial and error, at the age of 20, she made off with a 30-year-old whose defining characteristics seemed to be that he was French and rich.

The essayโ€™s alleged offenses ranged from the kind that would irritate Greta Thunberg โ€” the casual way Christieโ€™s byline notes that she lives in โ€œMiami and Londonโ€ โ€” to the kind that would irritate Gloria Steinem. โ€œIโ€™ll never forget it,โ€ the author writes, โ€œhow he showed me around our first place like he was introducing me to myself: This is the wine youโ€™ll drink, where youโ€™ll keep your clothes, we vacation here, this is the other language weโ€™ll speak, youโ€™ll learn it.โ€

Christie was taking a cosseted, retro archetype โ€” the gold digger โ€” and presenting it as something intellectual and liberated. She hadnโ€™t wanted to marry a fixer-upper, she writes, citing her younger brother who still left his towels on the floor. She wanted a man that some other woman had already fixed up, and who could, in turn, fix her. Not a partner, she writes, but a โ€œmentor.โ€ Specifically, one who could fulfill a promise that feminism had allegedly failed to deliver: โ€œI had grown bored of discussions of fair and unfair, equal or unequal,โ€ writes Christie, โ€œand preferred instead to consider a thing called ease.โ€

A thing called ease.

That last sentence was the only one in the whole piece that made me stop in my tracks. It was breathtaking in its transparency: Iโ€™m not doing this out of principle or based on a worldview. Iโ€™m doing this because life seemed hard and this seemed easy.

You could argue, as many did, that if your relationship is predicated on you being young, it might get considerably less easy when you age. But castigating Christieโ€™s essay was actually the least interesting way to engage with it, because, at heart, it was dealing with bigger themes than even she seemed to know what to do with: The elusiveness of female contentment in the modern era. The elusiveness of rest โ€” for everyone โ€” in the modern era. The concept of romantic relationships as the ultimate life hack, and the resigned idea that the only way to move forward is by moving backward.

Perhaps youโ€™ve been seeing the term โ€œtradwifeโ€ lately, a modern coinage for a TikTok-fluent married woman who keeps house, extols โ€œtraditionalโ€ values and yields to her husband. Perhaps youโ€™ve even seen the term โ€œstay-at-home girlfriends,โ€ the influencer communityโ€™s true prophets of female ease. Unlike stay-at-home moms, whose days might be filled with school drop-offs and toddler-wrangling, the childless SAHGโ€™s days are filled mostly with home care and self care: elaborate skin, fitness and food routines that keep their bodies beautiful and their lives serene for the boyfriends who are, after all, funding the whole shebang.

In one SAHG video, I watched a platinum blonde explain that her boyfriend agreed to pay for all of their travel if she would do all of the packing. The rest of the video was dedicated to the most meticulous suitcase job youโ€™ve ever seen โ€” sunglasses nestled in shoes, a rainbow of rolled shirts โ€” which appeared to take her the better part of an afternoon.

Another video featured a young woman in a negligee patiently curling her hair while an overlay of text read: โ€œPeople used to ask me, โ€˜whatโ€™s your dream job?โ€™ I never knew the answer. I realized itโ€™s because I donโ€™t dream of labor. I dream of living a soft, feminine life.โ€ The video was captioned, โ€œI dream of feminine leisure,โ€ which I soon realized was a sort of motto among this set.

โ€œI dream of feminine leisure,โ€ wrote a lovely brunette as she sauntered to the pool in a floaty coverup.

โ€œI dream of feminine leisure,โ€ wrote another lovely brunette as she applied a fresh coat of lip gloss at her vanity.

The comments on these types of videos abound with wistful envy: heart emoji, lipstick kiss emoji, green juice, vacuum.

What is feminine leisure, exactly? Is it a set of prescribed activities? An aesthetic? A vibe?

The simple answer is that itโ€™s a solution โ€” maybe not a good solution, but a conceivable one โ€” to a problem. A problem some young women have diagnosed in the landscape of modern adulthood.

A frantic mother of a 16-year-old wrote into Slateโ€™s Care and Feeding advice column a few months ago to say that her formerly go-getter daughter had announced that she wanted to skip the rigors of college and instead focus on maintaining her appearance for a future husband. โ€œSheโ€™s now talking about how great the โ€˜patriarchyโ€™ is,โ€ wrote the alarmed mom, โ€œand how she canโ€™t wait for someone to come and take care of her.โ€

From Christie to tradwives to SAHGs to the Patriarchy Daughter, the common thread seems to be the concept that liberation is overrated. That women raised on the virtues of female independence have been sold a bill of goods. Yes, we are allowed to have successful careers. But nobody had decreased the amount of laundry or errands that still needed to be run. Nobody had added any more hours onto the clock.

The Wall Street Journal recently detailed a new paper to be published in the journal Social Indicators Research that found that, โ€œregardless of how the question is asked or what measure is used, women say they are more anxious, more depressed, more tired and more pessimistic than men,โ€ the Journal said. At the same time, though, women are also more likely โ€œto say they are happy and satisfied with their lives.โ€

Itโ€™s a phenomenon known as the โ€œfemale happiness paradox,โ€ and researchers canโ€™t really explain it.

One guess cited in the article is that the measuring stick itself is off: Men, after all, are the ones who die more often by suicide, drug overdoses and alcoholism. So maybe itโ€™s not that they are less anxious and depressed than women, but that, conditioned to be taciturn, they are less likely to report it. Another guess is that the things that stress women out โ€” children, relationship-building, achieving work-life balance โ€” are also the things that give them the most satisfaction.

Regardless of how to interpret the data, the facts of the matter remain that women are either miserable but happy or happy but miserable. And if scientific researchers canโ€™t figure out what to do about this paradox, can 20-year-old women? Why knock yourself over trying? Crash the MBA reception. Curl your hair. Pack the suitcase. Choose ease.

Iโ€™ll pause to note that, generally, we see and hear much less from the men in these relationships than from their influencer wives and girlfriends; their voices are missing from this discourse. Maybe itโ€™s because the mutual arrangement is working for them, but theyโ€™re afraid of being labeled sexist for admitting it. Maybe they donโ€™t want to hurt their girlfriendโ€™s feelings by explaining that they truly could not care less if their shirts are rolled. Maybe itโ€™s just because theyโ€™re at their offices when all the lovely content is being made.

Whatever the case: I can imagine a lot of men would like to have a stay-at-home partner, not because they are misogynists but because itโ€™s a relief when someone else has already done the grocery shopping โ€” and I can imagine a lot of women would feel the same way. I can also imagine that a lot of men would like to saunter toward a pool in the middle of a Tuesday, or spend their days as Christie describes in the Cut: โ€œMostly I get to read, to walk central London and Miami and think in delicious circles.โ€ So far, TikTok has not spun off an equivalent stay-at-home-boyfriend aesthetic.

The fact of the matter is that almost nobody who works for a living has the time they wish they did to look, feel or be their best, much less to cultivate a highly aesthetic relationship with a thing called ease .

What if the problem is not feminism but capitalism โ€” specifically the American version, where work-life balance is a punchline? What if instead of 11 paid vacation days , as the average American gets, these women got the full month that is standard in the United Kingdom? What if instead of five (or six or seven) days a week, they worked the four days that countries such as South Africa and Belgium are piloting? Would that allow enough time to do a full skin-care regimen and pack a great suitcase? If college werenโ€™t so ghastly expensive here, maybe that one ladyโ€™s daughter wouldnโ€™t be so keen on the patriarchy as a route to leisure that bypasses the long, uphill road to financial independence.

It wasnโ€™t fair when women had no choice to stay home. Itโ€™s not fair if women are working but are still doing the work of maintaining a home. Itโ€™s not fair if both men and women are trying to juggle it together and are still finding that there arenโ€™t enough hours or dollars in a day.

Who wouldnโ€™t dream of feminine leisure?

A few months ago, I decided to reread Ottessa Moshfeghโ€™s brilliant novel โ€œMy Year of Rest and Relaxation.โ€ Itโ€™s about a young woman struggling so much with her grown-up life that she embarks on a plan to sleep through an entire year via a steady influx of prescription narcotics. The ending is ambiguous โ€” but, the way I read it, happy: By the end of the experiment, she has finally rested enough to rejoin the world, which she does with a rejuvenated and more optimistic perspective than she had before.

I mentioned this to a friend, who looked at me funny.

โ€œOh,โ€ my friend said. โ€œI thought she died.โ€

While writing this, I learned that a colleague and I were both obsessed with an influencer with a tradwife aesthetic who made elaborate pastries while wearing a placid, unchanging expression that made her look like a high-functioning lobotomy patient. In 2024, was this satire, or serious?

The same co-worker had been served the SAHG skinfluencer videos that also populated my social media feeds. Could you imagine, we asked one another, spending 30 minutes a day washing your face?

Then I went home and started thinking about the most satisfying day Iโ€™d had in recent months: A bundle of accrued comp time had allowed me to take a paid day off work on a random Wednesday. I went to yoga, bought a fancy sandwich, booked summer travel, researched preschools and made a dinner that was, for once, assembled patiently and attractively and not after desperately Googling โ€œ15-minute dinner can of beans and one potato?โ€

There was a good amount of leisure in there โ€” even a good amount of feminine leisure.

But hereโ€™s the thing: The day hadnโ€™t felt satisfying because I had achieved harmony with my feminine destiny; it felt satisfying because I, like most other adult humans of any gender, have a long list of necessary tasks, and almost never enough time to get through them. American culture is not conducive to helping to-do lists get shorter. Workweeks are long, vacation is limited, preschools are not universal and must therefore be researched.

And dreams? Dreams are dreams.

I wondered about the women who seemed to be seeking a relationship solution to the societal and existential problem of unrest. Did they really want to have no control over their own finances? To have to ask for an allowance? How would they feel about themselves and the choices they had made in five, 10, 20 years? When their skin was going to get wrinkles no matter how well they had cared for it. When they had run out of ways to film their get-ready-with-me mornings.

Cosmopolitan ran a story last month about some women who had once identified as stay-at-home girlfriends but who donโ€™t anymore. โ€œIf he is paying for your whole life and you donโ€™t have any income at all, there will start to be resentment,โ€ influencer Bella Greenlee was quoted as saying, later adding: โ€œI would clean the house more than I had to, just to keep myself entertained. I didnโ€™t really have a lot to do, so I was kind of going crazy.โ€

The solution to this messy moment in the history of gender and work is not to dream backward, to the way the middle class used to do it โ€” women as pretty property and men as forced breadwinners โ€” and decide that if today isnโ€™t working, yesterday must have been. The solution is to wonder what we might do about tomorrow.

A few days after the โ€œCase for Marrying an Older Manโ€ essay came out, the New Yorker published an article that received much less vitriol and attention. It was a story about a woman named Alena Kate Pettitt , who had gained fame four years ago as one of the original tradwife influencers. Since childhood, sheโ€™d prized the idea of a well-kept home and well-set table, and, after marrying and getting pregnant, she quit her job to make such a life a reality. She ironed. She sewed. She took pictures of herself making banana bread and getting dolled up in 1950s-style clothes, and she posted them to Instagram.

Then, gradually and for a lot of reasons, she got tired of being an influencer. She didnโ€™t like how her lifestyle, which sheโ€™d pursued out of genuine interest, had slowly become symbolic and politicized. She noted how her content had become an ouroboros: If she tried to post pictures of herself being domestic in jeans and a T-shirt, the reaction was โ€œmuted,โ€ according to the New Yorker, while the dolled-up photos of retro housedresses went โ€œthrough the roof,โ€ she said. So she wore more dresses, and got more followers, and wore more dresses, and what she was doing started to seem progressively more like a myth than real life.

It was lacking, shall we say, ease. Even wrapping herself in a retro bubble hadnโ€™t protected her from having to make difficult choices, engage in self-introspection, work hard, live life. Being a public-facing tradwife turned out to be just as false of a promise as having it all.

Last year, Pettitt made the radical decision to leave Instagram. Her son was about to start high school, and her family was planning a transcontinental move. It seemed like a good time to consider all of her life choices, she said. Sheโ€™d always wanted to own a coffee shop. She thought she might go back to work.

What is the shaka? Hawaii lawmakers want to officially claim 'hang loose' hand gesture

(Left to right) Ohio residents Lindsey Rusch of Grandview Heights, Sue Rusch of Columbus, and Lisa Rusch of Grandview Heights visiting Whalerโ€™s Village in Kaโ€™anapali near Lahaina on Maui.

In a nod to its rich cultural heritage, Hawaii's State Legislature appears poised to designate the iconic "shaka" gesture as the island's official symbol, recognizing it as its birthplace.

The shaka, also known as "hang loose" or "hang ten," is characterized by extending the pinky and thumb while curling down the remaining fingers and waving. The gesture, an intrinsic part of Hawaiian culture and embraced by the surfing community, is commonly used to convey greetings, gratitude and camaraderie.

Aloha State lawmakers introduced a pair of bills earlier this year to make the shaka the official gesture of Hawaii . If the bills pass, the iconic two-finger sign of goodwill would become the first state-sanctioned wave in the nation.

But where did the shaka come from, and how do locals feel about the bill?

The history of the Hawaii hand gesture

The roots of the "shaka" symbol can be traced back to the early 1900s, intertwined with the indomitable spirit of one man: Hamana Kalili.

Kalili, a worker at the Kahuku Sugar Mill, endured a life-altering accident when his hand was caught in the factory rollers. This left him with only two fingers on his right handโ€”the thumb and the pinky. Despite the hardship, Kalili found a new purpose as the security officer for the local train, tasked with warding off mischievous children from hitching joyrides.

With a wave of his unique two-finger hand, Kalili signaled the children to halt their antics. Initially born out of necessity, the gesture soon became a symbol of respect and understanding within the community, and residents adopted Kalili's distinctive wave.

As the waves of tourists began to flock to Hawaii after World War II, the shaka symbol found its way beyond the shores of Kahuku. Visitors embraced the gesture, embodying its message of inclusivity and compassion.

Today, Hamana Kalili's legacy endures through a bronze statue erected in his honor at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie.

Though the exact origins of the term "shaka" remain debated, some theories suggest a link to Japan's Shaka Buddha.

Residents feel a deep connection with the gesture.

The legislation enjoys widespread bipartisan support from both residents and lawmakers, indicating a clear path to becoming law. While some view it as a mere formality, others are more enthusiastic.

Kara Simpson, a 32-year-old small business owner from Kailua, said the gesture is already "engrained" in Hawaii's culture.

"I think it's pretty standard and already a symbol of the state. I don't think they have to officially make it (a distinction), but it's cool. I think it's already a big thing here," Simpson said.

Marian Clark, a 40-year-old nurse from Windward Oahu, said the bill was "important" and noted how she taught her son to "shaka" whenever someone lets them cross the street.

"It's an expression of love. Hi, goodbye. Thank you. I feel like it has multiple meanings, but it's positive," Clark said. "It's just a symbol of Aloha and representation of where you're from."

Jeff Kamakele, a 70-year-old resident from Windward Oahu, agreed with Clark's sentiment.

"It's unique to the islands because it really started from here. You know, so it's something that we can relate to," Kamakele said. "I think it's a good thing because it identifies us."

Project Shaka takes over Hawaii in 2024

'Shaka-mania in Hawaii' gains momentum, with several other statewide projects celebrating the iconic gesture later this year.

Starting in June, Hawaii residents can visit the state's Department of Motor Vehicles and sign up for a special license plate featuring the shaka hand gesture. The aloha tags will cost $30.50, with $20 of the proceeds supporting business education programs.

The shaka gesture has come a long way from being a simple hand sign to a cultural symbol. Technology experts are recommending that the Unicode Consortium, which decides on the creation of emojis, reconsider a new shaka symbol that accurately represents the gesture by having the fingers facing inward. The decision is expected in November, and if approved, the shaka emoji will be used in countless text messages worldwide.
