Safe Travels Global Group Our goal is that you become an intrepid world traveler without boundaries. Foreign travel does not have to be foreign. Safe Travels Global Group (STGG) is a niche travel organization based in the District of Columbia which seeks to remove the designation of things that are different, unknown, inexperienced and frustrating as being “foreign”. STGG introduces you to a travel experience that helps to eliminate the worry, the fears, the “foreign”. You may be a parent of a child who would like to accompany their high school or college group for an overseas experience, but you have concerns for their well-being. Perhaps your corporation desires to have excursions to a different country that would not provide the same immediate, emergent response as if you were in the United States. Or possibly, your faith organization would like to learn more about the genesis and greater depth of your religion, but those footsteps in history occur in locations that could be subject to uncertainty. Passengers disrupting the long flights to your destination? Complexities passing through customs and immigration checkpoints? A theft occurs on the streets of an international city? How about that lost passport, and how will you get that quickly replaced? Aggressive persons attempting to interfere with your enjoyment while in a different country? Who is there to assist if there is a medical issue of choking? Injury or fatigue? Heart attack? Or what happens if a situation becomes dangerous? Any country that one travels to in today’s world can experience acts of terrorism, political or economic instability at any time. These are questions that most travel agencies cannot quickly answer for a traveler. At Safe Travels Global Group, we are the only travel company known to offer these services that no other company can. You can book travel with any company. But will that company be there with a person to provide actual relief of airline disruption due to weather, delays or cancellations? Does your travel company have an immediate response mechanism to manage threatening or life-saving needs? The answer is no. We supplement your group travel with experienced law enforcement officers committed to public safety and your well-being. We are the only company known that offers immediate, responsive and talented persons who are there with you on your travels. With engaging and professional hosts at every step of your international experience, we remove the complexities and manage the frustration, concerns or fear of “foreign” travel. By having someone looking out for your interests, we provide the relief, particularly when seconds count. Safe Travels Global Group has amassed a motivated team of highly qualified and extensively traveled retired Federal Air Marshals and other law enforcement officials. They take on the roles of Global Travel Hosts, operations officers and marketing/sales personnel. Most of our Global Travel Hosts have over 5,000,000 miles of domestic and international travel and 20 years of experience traveling North America, Europe, Central and South America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Our Global Travel Hosts will escort and assist group travel to most countries.

For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2023 for every type of traveler.

Best Overall Group Travel: Exodus Travels

Images of nature around the mountains and lakes of Slovenia as seen on the Exodus Travels' Lakes and Mountains of Slovenia walking tour

With trips on every continent, Exodus Travels covers anywhere on this planet that you could possibly want to go, from popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast to well off-the-beaten path adventures like Tajikistan. This award-winning group travel company boasts thousands of repeat customers who sign up for trips year after year (97% of past participants would recommend Exodus Travels to a friend).

These small group tours operate with only around 12-16 people, and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.

Exodus Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.

Top Trip: Explore under-the-radar Europe by foot on Exodus Travels’ Lakes & Mountains of Slovenia walking tour .

A Taste of the Sweet Life in Slovenia

Best Adventure Group Travel: World Expeditions

Groups of hikers walking and camping around the mountains of Kilimanjaro with World Expeditions

World Expeditions has been taking adventurous travelers to remote locations all over the world ever since its first group trek through Nepal in 1975. Today, World Expeditions offers active itineraries on every continent. Intrepid travelers can opt for trips themed around mountaineering, rafting, cycling, hiking, and more.

World Expeditions aims to leave communities and places where they operate tours better than they found them. Trips are created using the company’s Thoughtful Travel Charter as a guideline, which emphasizes respect for the environment, sustainability, having a positive impact on local communities, protecting wildlife, and more.

World Expeditions’ trips are capped at just 16 people to provide a good experience for participants, and there are no single supplements for solo travelers willing to share a room with someone of the same gender.

Top Trip: Summit Africa’s tallest mountain on a fully-supported trek up Kilimanjaro on World Expeditions’ eight day trip up the beautiful Lemosho Route .

Best Budget Group Travel: G Adventures

People visiting famous sites around China with the G Adventures' China Express group travel tour

For travelers on a budget, G Adventures offers cheap group tours that make dream destinations accessible to nearly anyone. (Think: sailing the Galapagos for just $1,124 , criss-crossing India’s Golden Triangle for $559 , or spending 8 days in Bali for less than $800.)

G Adventures is one of the best tour companies for solo travelers as well, as most trips don’t have a single-supplement. You can choose to share a room with another G Adventures solo traveler, or pay extra to have your own space.

G Adventures keeps costs down by opting for cheaper hotels and local meals, and making certain activities optional (for an additional cost). Pick your travel style—options range from “basic” to more luxe tours run in partnership with National Geographic. Family tours, local living tours (featuring homestays), and wellness-focused tours are also available.

Top Trip: G Adventures’ China Express trip is a great way to see the highlights of China if you’re short on both time and budget.

About 1000 Mile Travel Group: Global Host Agency

1000 mile travel group was founded by two partners, ben ross and nicola veltman, with an unwavering determination to achieve a shared mission; to help experienced travel agents turn their travel careers into successful, mobile, independent travel businesses..

From an Australian start-up, 1000 Mile Travel is today a global host travel agency operating in North America, UK and Australia supporting a network of more than 750 independent travel advisors. 1000 Mile Travel is part of the CTM Group of travel businesses.

Meet the 1000 Mile Travel Group Team

It started with a single step....

1000 Mile Travel Group’s Founders and CEOs, Ben Ross and Nicola Veltman, have truly ‘walked the talk’. Ben founded 1000 Mile Travel in 2015 as the business’s first ever independent travel expert. With 15 years’ experience working for a mega global travel management company, Ben was burnt out and believed there must be a better way to do the work he loved while finding balance in his personal and professional life.

As he honed his own independent travel business, Ben developed a unique business blueprint that would form the foundation of 1000 Mile Travel Group’s global success; a blueprint which provides experienced, independent travel agents with access to the best buying power, technology, and support they need to manage their business and their clients’ travel needs while living a lifestyle as unique as they are.

travel global group

To combine traditional travel management services with all the benefits the “work from anywhere” host agency model has to offer within one independent travel agency network, made up of experienced, passionate travel professionals committed to delivering personalized service, exceptional travel knowledge, innovative technology solutions, and value for money.

Our Growth Story

Founded in Melbourne, Australia in 2015, 1000 Mile Travel Group expanded into the UK in 2017, establishing a second head office in London.

Motivated by a desire to bring the 1000 Mile Travel Group blueprint to the world, Ben and Nicola initiated a technology partnership with CTM in 2021 to provide its agent network with access to CTM’s award-winning proprietary travel booking technology, Lightning. Recognizing a strong alignment in business vision and values, alongside a fast-rebounding travel industry and strong demand for travel management expertise in the small business sector, CTM acquired 1000 Mile Travel Group in July 2022 with a view to further expanding the successful host agency model into the North American market.

With a long history in the US vacation travel market, CTM’s independent host agency network, MTravel, was integrated into the 1000 Mile Travel Group business in late 2022, forming a combined network of more than 750 independent global travel experts under the 1000 Mile Travel  Group brand.

In 2022, Ben and Nicola relocated to Denver, Colorado to lead the integrated global host agency business.

Shared values, common technology systems, and partnerships mean that 1000 Mile Travel Group’s travel advisors and their clients collectively benefit from the resources, scale, technology, and global buying power offered by the CTM Group while still maintaining the family-business feel they’ve grown accustomed to.

At 1000 Mile Travel Group we believe ‘the journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step’ – Laos Tzu.

That’s why even though we’re growing, we will always value experience, service excellence, and quality over quantity and give our travel advisors the ability to build their dream life and business while doing what they love – helping their customers experience the world.

How New Google Maps Features Encourage Sustainable Travel

Google Maps

Are you a Google Search or Google Maps user? You’re not alone – Google Maps has over one billion monthly users and approximately 99,000 search queries are processed by Google every second, resulting in about eight and a half billion searches daily and roughly two trillion global searches annually, or hundreds of millions of users daily.

So, Google is supporting its users in finding more sustainable transport methods.

“When it comes to travelling and commuting, we want people to have the right information to make more sustainable choices,” says James Byers, Group Product Manager, Search.

“With new updates to features in Maps and Search, you can find convenient public transit and walking routes, see alternatives to air travel and better understand the estimated emissions of flights.”

travel global group

James has been at Google since 2017, moving from Cloud to Search in 2021. An alumni of economics and management at Cornell University, he founded WikiSpaces in 2004 and grew monthly visitors to 50 million before 2014 when it was acquired by TES. James was the Global Director of Marketplace at TES until joining Google.

Google supports sustainable user decisions

Despite growing travel demands post-Covid, to reach the global sustainability goals and reduce global warming the transport sector needs to reduce emissions by around a quarter by 2030.

The updates to Google Search and Google Maps are designed to encourage users looking for travel information to consider the environmental impact of their decisions.

In Maps, this comes in the form of a new feature that suggests public transport or walking options where travel times are comparable to driving routes. In Search, a new expanded feature supports users finding information on buses and long distance train routes.

Last year, a new sustainable Search feature gave users looking for flight information about train routes, which is now being rolled out to Google Flights too. The Travel Impact Model (TIM), a methodology published by Google and created by James in 2022 for predicting per-passenger flight emissions, filters results in Google Flights by lower-emitting options – this has been made more accessible in the update.

James concludes: “While there’s still a long road ahead when it comes to sustainable travel, today’s updates will give more people the information they need to choose lower-carbon alternatives.”

Safety In Africa: Tips For Staying Safe

For many, just the thought of travelling to Africa is enough to send them scurrying under their bed with fear.

We’ve all heard the horror stories about crime and diseases, so most people’s concerns about visiting are usually centered around safety in Africa.

Africa is a daunting and challenging place to travel to. However, it is one of the most rewarding travel experiences you will ever have.

There is no place on earth like Africa, and if you can tame those monsters that hide in your shadows, then it is so worth you investing time and money travelling on this unique and vast continent.

In this guide, we share our top safety tips for traveling in Africa, so you can feel more at ease about visiting.

Global Peace Index Scores

Behaviour / appearance safety tips, 2. destination safety tips, 3. driving in africa safety tips, 4. health in africa safety tips, group tours of africa, final thoughts, more africa travel posts, is africa safe.

Since Africa is a continent, you cannot simply say yes or no with regards to safety.

Some of the safest countries to visit in Africa include Mauritius, Botswana , Rwanda, Seychelles , Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Namibia, and Zambia.

These destinations are known for their welcoming hospitality, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural experiences.

Malawi is also safe in terms of crime, and is often described as The Warm Heart of Africa, though there are malaria zones and other diseases to watch out for there.

On the other hand, certain areas may pose higher safety risks due to crime and civil unrest.

Some cities in Zambia, such as Lusaka and Livingstone, have a higher crime rate.

Travelers are advised to exercise increased caution when visiting some regions such as Sudan, South Sudan, and Somalia, as well as some cities in South Africa such as Johannesburg.

There are particular areas where crime is higher, such as the Townships, or slums, which are areas that tourists wouldn’t go anyway.

Stick to the main touristy areas and tourist attractions, and you shouldn’t run into any problems.

Also, check where they rank on the Global Peace Index , to get a feel for how bad crime is.

To help you understand which countries are considered safe, here are the gpi score for some of the most visited countries in Africa.

For context, the Global Peace Index (GPI) scores work by measuring and ranking the relative peacefulness of nations and regions based on various indicators such as levels of violence, crime rates, military expenditures, terrorism, and political stability.

The scores are calculated using a wide range of data, including surveys, qualitative analysis, and expert assessments, and offer a guide to the overall assessment of peace and security.

The lower scores indicate a higher level of peace and stability.

The following scores are as of January 2024. The lowest score is 1.1, and the highest is 3.4.

Safety Tips For Traveling in Africa

To make sure you don’t run into the wrong area, or attract any unwanted attention, be sure to follow these words of advice about safety in Africa…

As with any place you visit, act confidently and always be friendly . You don’t want to invite trouble your way. Africans are really friendly, there is no reason you can’t return their beaming smiles and chat with them.

Do not wear any flashy jewelry . Look like a budget traveller. Never talk about money and how much you have. Try not to carry a lot of money on you and keep it well hidden.

Ladies , there will be many local men that will want to chat you up, these are really young, cool, good looking men. It is so easy to be charmed by them. Just be careful.

We found the locals really aggressive in Tanzania. They will crowd you and pull at you in order to get you to buy from them etc.

Just be really firm and confident with them from the word go. Avoid conversation and eye contact. Just a curt nod of the head and move on.

Choose your destination wisely . Some African countries are safer than others, so always check your government’s travel advisory warnings.

Know your own comfort level and be prepared for any dangers you may encounter.

I personally would not go to places that are currently involved in acts of war or aggression or have a high crime rate.

Countries like Somalia have too many cases of kidnapping and robbery for me to see the appeal of going. For me, it is just not worth it.

Try to avoid walking around at night. Unless you are in big cities and with a group of people. I would just stick to the campsites/hostels/hotels, or if you do, don’t be rolling drunk or by yourself.

Know the area you are in. Just in case there are wild animals, you don’t want to be unknowingly walking around in their home at night time (or day for that matter).

Also have the number of the local authorities saved on your phone, so you know who to call in case you need to.

We stayed at St Lucia , one of my favorite South African towns, but it was also a place where hippos freely wandered the streets at night.

The only place I was really scared was Johannesburg, but that was because I had heard a lot of horror stories of carjacking, mugging, armed robbery, and worse.

Nothing happened to us.

The second time I went there I had my brother, who lived there for awhile, to look out for me and take me to the safe areas.

Make sure you are aware of where it is safe to go and where it is not . If you happen to be in Johannesburg, simply get an Uber everywhere. Don’t walk, even if it’s just 5 minutes down the road.

If you can spend time with local people you know and trust who know the area like this then hang out with them.

It will ease your mind and allow you to see the good side of the destination.

Or if you are that concerned then perhaps join a tour of these certain areas.

Hiring a car is a fantastic way to see certain parts of Africa, especially the Game Reserves and National Parks. Make sure you understand the road rules and take care . Check Discover Cars for best prices and availability .

If you do plan to self-drive a safari, be sure to check out our safari tips to maximize your experience.

When in the game parks keep your windows rolled up when you get close to the wild animals. Yes, they could jump in there. Only get out of your car at the designated rest areas and still keep your five senses heightened.

Don’t lean out of the car to photograph lions or rhino, as they may come up close to your vehicle.

When driving around Africa, you will have plenty of cars, trucks and other vehicles overtaking at any moment, blind corners or not.

I always honk my horn several times when approaching a blind corner to warn anyone coming opposite to stay on their side of the road until I pass.

Also note that speed cameras are ruthless in South Africa. You might not even know they are there, so be sure to make sure you’re not speeding if you want to avoid a fine.

If you come face to face with an elephant and he starts flapping his ears, that is your cue to reverse a bit and give him his space. And if he charges then lets hope you can drive like Michael Schumaker.

If you have to catch public transport i.e mini-vans, pick ups, never sit in the front seat/cabin. It is commonly known as the Death Seat . Take the squashy back options – it is safer.

Make sure that you get the recommended vaccinations before you arrive in Africa. You will need Yellow Fever and may not be allowed to enter your own country upon return if you have not had it.

You may also need to get vaccinations for Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, as well as the normal precautions such as tetanus jabs.

Carry your vaccination booklet with you as you will need a lot of vaccinations and won’t remember when you had it or when you need a booster. You’ll need to show it to prove you have had your yellow fever vaccination as well.

Do you have malaria pills? Probably something you should have. Although they generally just mask the symptoms rather than prevent them.

My brother still got malaria even while taking them and was holed up in a small, dusty cabin on Lake Malawi for three months. He was happy enough, as the World Cup Soccer was on so he could watch all the matches.

Some have ugly side effects so choose wisely. We didn’t have any problems with Doxycycline, although it can make you more sensitive to the sun.

They came in handy for me when I contracted Tick Bite Fever. They are an antibiotic so they helped clear it up.

Watch out when swimming in stagnant water (particularly in Malawi) where you can get Bilharzia. Check with the locals they will tell you if it is okay to swim or not.

Don’t go hiking mountains in the heat of a Malawian 40 degree day. You will feel like you are about to die from heat stroke – really stupid move.

We ate plenty of food from local vendors and street food and never got sick. Go for it! Choose places that are well frequented by locals. Make sure the food is piping hot before you tuck in and you should avoid food poisoning disasters.

It’s important to travel to Africa with adequate travel insurance! Check Visitor’s Coverage  and  World Nomads , and  SafetyWing  for prices and policies.

I was a little scared when we decided we were going to travel around East and South Africa independently.

The tours sounded safe and comfortable, but we really wanted more of an authentic experience.

With this came a certain amount of fear. But, my fears were alleviated as soon as we touched ground.

After almost five months of catching local transport, camping, and spending a lot of time with the locals, we had no dangers or horror stories to speak of – only challenging journeys, warm friendships made, and one out of the ordinary case of tick bite fever.

Global Greenhouse Gas Overview

On This Page:

Global Emissions and Removals by Gas

Global emissions by economic sector, trends in global emissions, emissions by country.

At the global scale, the key greenhouse gases emitted by human activities are:

  • Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) : Fossil fuel use is the primary source of CO 2 . CO 2 can also be emitted from the landscape through deforestation, land clearance for agriculture or development, and degradation of soils. Likewise, land management can also remove additional CO 2 from the atmosphere through reforestation, improvement of soil health, and other activities.
  • Methane (CH 4 ) : Agricultural activities, waste management, energy production and use, and biomass burning all contribute to CH 4 emissions.
  • Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) : Agricultural activities, such as fertilizer use, are the primary source of N 2 O emissions. Chemical production and fossil fuel combustion also generates N 2 O.
  • Fluorinated gases (F-gases) : Industrial processes, refrigeration, and the use of a variety of consumer products contribute to emissions of F-gases, which include hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ).

Additional compounds in the atmosphere including solid and liquid aerosol and other greenhouse gases, such as water vapor and ground-level ozone can also impact the climate. Learn more about these compounds and climate change on our Basics of Climate Change page .

Source: Data from IPCC (2022); Based on global emissions from 2019, details on the sectors and individual contributing sources can be found in the Contribution of Working Group III to the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Mitigation of Climate Change, Chapter 2.

Global greenhouse gas emissions can also be broken down by the economic activities that lead to their atmospheric release. [1]

GHG Global Emissions by Economic Sector

  • Electricity and Heat Production (34% of 2019 global greenhouse gas emissions): The burning of coal, natural gas, and oil for electricity and heat is the largest single source of global greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Industry (24% of 2019 global greenhouse gas emissions): Greenhouse gas emissions from industry primarily involve fossil fuels burned on site at facilities for energy. This sector also includes emissions from chemical, metallurgical, and mineral transformation processes not associated with energy consumption and emissions from waste management activities. (Note: Emissions from industrial electricity use are excluded and are instead covered in the Electricity and Heat Production sector.)
  • Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (22% of 2019 global greenhouse gas emissions): Greenhouse gas emissions from this sector come mostly from agriculture (cultivation of crops and livestock) and deforestation. This estimate does not include the CO 2 that ecosystems remove from the atmosphere by sequestering carbon (e.g. in biomass, soils). [2]
  • Transportation (15% of 2019 global greenhouse gas emissions): Greenhouse gas emissions from this sector primarily involve fossil fuels burned for road, rail, air, and marine transportation. Almost all (95%) of the world's transportation energy comes from petroleum-based fuels, largely gasoline and diesel. [3]
  • Buildings (6% of 2019 global greenhouse gas emissions): Greenhouse gas emissions from this sector arise from onsite energy generation and burning fuels for heat in buildings or cooking in homes. Note: Emissions from this sector are 16% when electricity use in buildings is included in this sector instead of the Energy sector.

Note on emissions sector categories.

GHE Emissions Forestry and Fossil Fuels

Emissions of non-CO 2 greenhouse gases (CH 4 , N 2 O, and F-gases) have also increased significantly since 1850.

  • Globally, greenhouse gas emissions continued to rise across all sectors and subsectors, most rapidly in the transport and industry sectors.
  • While the trend in emissions continues to rise, annual greenhouse gas growth by sector slowed in 2010 to 2019, compared to 2000 to 2009, for energy and industry, however remained roughly stable for transport.
  • The trend for for AFOLU remains more uncertain, due to the multitude of drivers that affect emissions and removals for land use, land-use change and forestry.
  • rising demand for construction materials and manufactured products,
  • increasing floor space per capita,
  • increasing building energy use,
  • travel distances, and vehicle size and weight.

To learn more about past and projected global emissions of non-CO 2 gases, please see the EPA report, Global Non-CO 2 Greenhouse Gas Emission Projections & Mitigation Potential: 2015-2050 . For further insights into mitigation strategies specifically within the U.S. forestry and agriculture sectors, refer to the latest Climate Economic Analysis report on Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Potential in U.S. Forestry and Agriculture .

GHG Emissions by Country in 2020

In 2020, the top ten greenhouse gas emitters were China, the United States, India, the European Union, Russia, Indonesia, Brazil, Japan, Iran, and Canada. These data include CO 2 , CH 4 , N 2 O, and fluorinated gas emissions from energy, agriculture, forestry and land use change, industry, and waste. Together, these top ten countries represent approximately 67% of total greenhouse gas emissions in 2020.

Emissions and sinks related to changes in land use are not included in these estimates. However, changes in land use can be important: estimates indicate that net global greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, forestry, and other land use were approximately 12 billion metric tons of CO 2 equivalent, [2] or about 21% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. [3] In areas such as the United States and Europe, changes in land use associated with human activities have the net effect of absorbing CO 2 , partially offsetting the emissions from deforestation in other regions.

Note on emissions sector categories:

The global emission estimates described on this page are from the Intergovernmental Panel (IPCC) on Climate Change's Fifth Assessment Report. In this report, some of the sector categories are defined differently from how they are defined in the Sources of Greenhouse Gas Emissions page on this website. Transportation, Industry, Agriculture, and Land Use and Forestry are four global emission sectors that roughly correspond to the U.S. sectors. Energy Supply, Commercial and Residential Buildings, and Waste and Wastewater are categorized slightly differently. For example, the IPCC's Energy Supply sector for global emissions encompasses the burning of fossil fuel for heat and energy across all sectors. In contrast, the U.S. Sources discussion tracks emissions from the electric power separately and attributes on-site emissions for heat and power to their respective sectors (i.e., emissions from gas or oil burned in furnaces for heating buildings are assigned to the residential and commercial sector). The IPCC has defined Waste and Wastewater as a separate sector, while in the Sources of Greenhouse Gas Emissions page, waste and wastewater emissions are attributed to the Commercial and Residential sector.

D.c.’s newest intercontinental property takes aim at luxury soccer tourism.

Inside the InterContinental Washington D.C. - The Wharf

Sports tourism has long been a passion pursuit among affluent globetrotters. And no sport holds more global appeal than soccer.

The FIFA World Cup is the premier destination event for soccer aficionados worldwide. The international tournament, which rotates host sites every four years, will be contested in stadiums across North America in 2026. It’s a logical time for FIFA to capture the U.S. soccer audience. The fan base for domestic leagues such as Major League Soccer (MLS) and the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is growing, to say nothing of the American interest in European professional teams and the hit Apple TV series “Ted Lasso.”

Against this backdrop, is the time right to pitch a luxury hotel to sports tourists in a U.S. soccer hub? The InterContinental Hotels Group thinks so.

Major League Soccer club D.C. United player Christian Benteke

The InterContinental Hotels Group

In partnership with DC United , the district’s own Major League Soccer (MLS) team, InterContinental Washington D.C - The Wharf . The Wharf’s new package gives soccer enthusiasts an opportunity to indulge like a VIP on match day and meet the players on the pitch for the ultimate fan experience. The full package includes:

  • Premium suite accommodations at InterContinental Washington D.C. The Wharf
  • Daily breakfast for two
  • VIP seats at the match at Audi Field with access to the Premium Club for food & beverage
  • Two DC United jerseys as a take-home memento
  • An exclusive meet and greet with the Player of the Match on the field post-match

New data reported by CNBC and the UN World Tourism Organization shows sports tourism represents one of the fastest growing sectors of the travel industry, with an estimated increase of 17.5 percent by 2030 . The trend has real momentum, but the idea of attracting soccer fans to a luxury hotel at the confluence of the Potomac and Anacostia rivers is new on several fronts.

Start with the neighborhood itself. Buzzard Point, a former military site, and the adjoining Navy Yard neighborhood only took root as a sports and entertainment district with the construction of Nationals Park (home to D.C.’s Major League Baseball team) in 2008. Other new amenities have slowly but surely filled in around it, turning the area into a vibrant destination for a new generation of District residents. Audi Field, Buzzard Point’s soccer venue, broke ground in 2017 and opened its doors a year later.

The D.C. United have been one of MLS’ steadiest performers at the ticket gates since its inaugural season of 1996 . However, the quality of the play in the league needed time to tick up. (MLS, the top professional league in the U.S., was derisively called “minor league soccer” by fans of the top foreign leagues for years.) Although the league still lags behind its European counterparts in terms of overall talent, MLS has consistently attracted post-peak foreign stars since the arrival of David Beckham in 2007. The trend continued in July 2023, when Inter Miami signed 36-year-old Lionel Messi .

Messi, an Argentine national, has practically been a household name since he was a teenager. His exploits in the World Cup, combined with his well-compensated play with Barcelona from 2004-21, make him perhaps the most talented player ever to come to MLS. He’s a regular on Forbes’ annual list of the world’s highest-paid athletes. Even though he’s past his prime, Messi remains a social media star with 502 million Instagram followers at last count . He’s the kind of player necessary to turn an ordinary soccer game into a destination event in the eyes of luxury sports travelers. Inter Miami made its annual trip to D.C. in March.

Given the buzz in Buzzard Point, it makes sense for the Intercontinental D.C. – The Wharf to capitalize by appealing to the soccer set. Built in 2017, the IHG property features soaring ceilings, waterfront views, and dock access in addition to 32 suites that appeal to the luxury set . Its sustainable approach and urban design allow the property to blend perfectly with the surrounding neighborhood from the outside, while its interior opulence will make well-heeled jetsetters feel right at home.

The package is a small but novel experiment in lifting the U.S. to global prominence as a soccer destination — just in time for the World Cup.
