Hilarious Non-Fiction Travel Books

I begin my list with some incredibly funny travel books that are based on real-life situations. Some of the scenarios you get into on your travels are so far-fetched, you can’t possibly make it up. And that’s what these non-fiction travel books demonstrate so well.

So here they are, my favorite funny travel books based on true events.

1. Not  Tonight,  Josephine : A Road Trip Through Small-Town America – George Mahood

not tonight josephine by george mahood

I begin my list with my ultimate favorite funny travel book by George Mahood . His debut novel, Not Tonight, Josephine , literally had me in tears of laughter!

Mahmood shares a diary of the time he and his best friend, Mark, bought a banged-up station wagon in New York and decided to road trip across the small towns of America.

The vehicle, which they named Josephine, was unreliable, old, and had bullet holes in the back window. What could go wrong?

It turns out, quite a lot actually, which is what gives this novel its funny edge. But even though Mahmood went through some tricky situations.

There is no doubt that his travels across America were a blast and you really get a feel for how special it was to him.

Honestly, I was sad when the book was over. I also loved his book, Travel with Rachel: In Search of South America , which was his next trip after this one.

It’s more of a light read and can be finished pretty quickly, and I personally found Not Tonight Josephine funnier.

2. Whatever You Do, Don’t Run: True Tales Of A Botswana Safari Guide – Peter Allison

whatever you do, don't run by Peter Allison

This hilarious novel by Peter Allison is a brilliant collection of fascinating stories of hilarious happenings that took place while he was an African safari guide.

Allison has seen it all, confronting the most fearsome of creatures and tough African terrain, but the biggest challenge of being a safari guide is…the people.

These stories are so outrageous that you can’t possibly make them up. It’s surprising how stupid and reckless some people can be, including being asked to be charged by a lion so a tourist can videotape it.

These tales will have you howling with laughter, as well as slapping your forehead saying “I can’t believe these people exist.” We can all empathize with Allison, but in his misery, we find comedy.

3.  All Over The Place: Adventures in Travel, True Love, and Petty Theft – Geraldine DeRuiter

All Over the Place- Adventures in Travel, True Love, and Petty Theft by geraldine deruiter

All Over the Place is the hilarious chronicle of Geraldine Deruiter, who after getting laid off from her job, decided to travel the world in search of adventure.

The only problem was, Deruiter wasn’t quite prepared for what was out there. Unable to read maps, has only a vague idea of where Russia is, and is terrified of pigeons. Not the toughest traveler material by any means.

However, from the experience, she learned a great deal and has a hilarious story or two to tell along the way.

She learned that traveling the world with someone you already know and love can make faraway places feel like home.

She learned about lost luggage and lost opportunities, and…well, getting lost in general.

But most importantly, she learned that you should always be yourself, no matter where you are and how silly you look.

4.  Footloose: Twisted Travels Across Asia, From Australia To Azerbaijan – Mark Walters

Footloose- Twisted Travels Across Asia, From Australia To Azerbaijan – Mark Walters

Footloose is the incredible story of how Mark Walters traveled from Sydney, Australia to Azerbaijan without flying and wearing flip-flops for the whole journey. He also doesn’t own shorts or a towel.

Using buses, train travel, and boats that ventured across three continents, Walters shares the exciting and hilarious tales of his travels. and the people he met.

From coming face-to-face with a risky gauntlet of terrorists and Chinese tanks, and having beers with a naked ex-Soviet officer, to eating hallucinogenics for breakfast in Amsterdam.

Walter’s journey is packed with adventures that are both comical and a little frightening!

5.  In A Sunburned Country – Bill Bryson

In A Sunburned Country – Bill Bryson

Bill Bryson is a well-acclaimed funny travel writer, and choosing which of his funny travel stories should make this list of the funniest travel books of all time is not an easy task.

Especially since Bill Bryson has been hailed as one of the funniest travel writers in history.

His previous novel, A Walk in the Woods which tells the story of his journey around the Appalachian trail had such great success.

I was incredibly excited to read In A Sunburned Country , which takes the reader on a journey through off-the-beaten-track Australia in the eyes of Bill Bryson.

As Bryson talks about his time in Australia, he offers a great introduction to whimsical and cheerful characters.

In a country that has more deadly creatures than any other, Bryson’s comedy style of travel writing will have you longing for a trip to Australia.

6. Queenan Country – Joe Queenan

Queenan Country - Joe Queenan

Joe Queenan is an American humorist who sought to answer one important question: what makes the Brits tick?

When Queenan’s English wife suggested cooking a chicken vindaloo on the 4th July for dinner instead of the traditional BBQ, after 26 years of marriage, he decided he had to find out what is going on in the mind of the Brits.

After taking a solitary pilgrimage to Great Britain to figure out why British people are the way that they are.

He describes all the traits and mannerisms that make British people different from the rest, including detailing all the quirky oddities that are unique to British culture.

Whether you’re reading this funny book as an American or a Brit, you can’t help but laugh at all the stereotypes and characters he meets along the way.

7. Westward Ha! – S.J. Perelman

Westward Ha! - S.J. Perelman

Westward Ha! describes the misadventures of satirical journalist and former foreign correspondent S.J. Perelman.

In these madcap travel chronicles from Hollywood to China, Singapore, Thailand, India, and Egypt, as well as several cities in Europe, Perelman and his cartoonist companion, Al Hirschfield, tell of their hilarious adventure through former war zones.

Their journey takes them to faraway places, where they learn about other cultures during a time that was a little perilous being just a few years after WWII.

Hailed as one of the best comic writers of his generation, Perelman’s funny travel writing is considered zany, snappy, and with a little bit of self-mocking too.

There are some real belly-aching laughs in this story, which is on the whole lighthearted and enthralling.

8. Sisters Behaving Badly: The laugh-out-loud, feel-good adventure – Maddie Please

Sisters Behaving Badly- The laugh-out-loud, feel-good adventure - Maddie Please

After an argument at a Carvery lunch, sisters Kitty and Jenny stop speaking to each other. But when both sisters inherit a rural French farmhouse, they are given an opportunity to right some wrongs.

Only the farmhouse is a mess and the farm animals have terrorized the garden.

This comical book set in France will have you holding your sides with laughter!

As the two sisters repair their relationship, Kitty is determined to enjoy herself with the handsome neighbor, while Jenny finds comfort in the fully stocked wine cellar.

This laugh-out-loud comedy travel book highlights how sometimes it feels good to be bad.

9. Going the Wrong Way – Chris Donaldson

Going the Wrong Way - Chris Donaldson

Going the Wrong Way is a coming-of-age, travel book of self-discovery that tells the story of Chris Donaldson’s road trip from his home in Belfast across Europe, Asia, and the Americas on his Moto Guzzi Le Mans motorbike.

Going The Wrong Way takes the reader back to the 70s, during simpler times, before technology and social media. It’s raw, honest, edgy, and packed full of adventure and hilarious experiences.

In it, Donaldson reflects on his journey that took him all the way to the highs of the Andes and lows of the outback, traveling more than 50,000 miles, before returning to Belfast.

This is part humor and part thought-provoking memoir. This is not only a motorcycle adventure book, but also a compelling tale that will leave you with a sense of wanderlust and admiration for the author’s resilience and determination.

Donaldson will have you howling with laughter in some places, and biting your nails in anticipation in others.

His writing style is effortless to read, as though you are reading the mind of a friend, but his knack for storytelling is what really sets him apart as an author.

10. Dishwasher: One Man’s Quest to Wash Dishes in All Fifty States – Pete Jordan

dishwasher by pete jordan

Pete Jordan’s Dishwasher is an amusing travel memoir of his adventures dishwashing his way across America.

Part adventure, part humor, and part journey of self-discovery, “Dishwasher Pete” talks about how he spent 12 years washing dishes from a bagel joint in New Mexico to a Mexican diner in Brooklyn before he gave it all up for love.

The premise is very simple, but it’s hilariously written and Jordan is clearly a very smart and funny guy. If you love a love story like the likes of Nick Hornby and Tom Perotta books, you’ll also love this.

11. Round Ireland with a Fridge – Tony Hawks

Round Ireland with a Fridge - Tony Hawks

After losing a drunken bet, Tony Hawks set out on a hitchhiking journey around Europe with a fridge.

As you can imagine, the experience of lugging a domestic appliance around the continent would lead to hilarious encounters, including meeting a real prince, a bogus king, and a priest who christened the fridge.

They had been through a lot together, and as Hawks describes his adventures, you forget that at times he is talking about an inanimate object and not a best friend.

This novel quickly became an international bestseller, with writing similar to that of Bill Bryson and Dave Barry.

12. That Bear Ate My Pants – Tony James Slater

That Bear Ate My Pants - Tony James Slater

Contrary to what the title suggests, a bear did not actually eat Tony James Slater’s pants, but it does give you an idea of the hilarious travel stories you’re about to read in this epic travel memoir.

This part travel memoir, part self-help book, is the journey of Slater as he tries to better himself as he volunteers at an animal refuge in Ecuador.

From battling a tree with a machete, finding numerous tarantulas (both alive and dead), and helping to sew the head back onto a partially decapitated crocodile, you wouldn’t believe the great stories that Slater has to tell!

13. Blue Latitudes: Boldly Going Where Captain Cook Has Gone Before – Tony Horwitz

travel guides funny

From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Confederates in the Attic, Tony Horwitz details his adventure as he retraces the voyages of Captain James Cook.

In the 18th century, Captain Cook’s voyages were considered the last of the great adventures of the seas. He sailed 150,000 miles from North to South poles, from Oceania to North America, and from Easter Island to Siberia.

He was essentially responsible for drawing the map of the world.

Tony Horwitz was inspired and decided to embark on the same quest. In Blue Latitudes, he vividly recounts tales from Cook’s voyages.

The details from his own adventures, from places such as Tahiti, Savage Island, and the Great Barrier Reef.

After signing on as a crewman aboard a replica of Cook’s vessel, Horwitz has first-hand experience of the life, highs and lows of life on the high seas.

In this insightful and hilarious novel, Horwitz brings the life and times of Captain Cook to life!

14. Hokkaido Highway Blues – Will Ferguson

travel guides funny

Hokkaido Highway Blues is a memoir by Will Ferguson, who hitchhiked the length of Japan following the Cherry Blossom Front.

Along the way, he racks up a hilarious collection of funny travel stories which have you laughing as you read the entire book from start to finish.

As well as the hilarious situations he gets into along his journey, you also learn a lot about Japanese culture.

Of course, he is largely poking fun at himself, but the cultural differences are what make this one of the top funny travel books of the 21st century.

15. Holy Cow: An Indian Adventure – Sarah Macdonald

travel guides funny

Holy Cow is the hilarious account of journalist Sarah Macdonald’s return to India, after swearing an oath never to return after her backpacking trip there in her 20s.

Now married and forced to live in New Dehli because of her husband’s job, so begins the funny travel stories of her time in India.

Although these stories are funny, there is a nice balance between memoir and educating the reader about the spirituality and cultural traditions of India.

If you’re ever looking for travel inspiration about the mystical land of India, be sure to add Holy Cow to your reading list.

16. The Full Montezuma – Peter Moore

The Full Montezuma - Peter Moore

Peter Moore is one of those travel writers who never disappoints! One of my favorite books by him is The Full Montezuma . It tells the story of a time he traveled around Central America in a budding relationship.

Not the most exotic of destinations to take your new girlfriend, especially after it had just come out of decades of civil war and poverty, disease, and natural disasters were rife.

Since she is only referred to as ‘The Girl Next Door’ you get a good idea of how the journey turned out.

The good news is that six months of backpacking together made for hilarious stories and a truly great insight into what life in Central America is like. But hey, not everyone can endure hurricanes and mosquitos galore!

For all the highs and all the lows, I’m here for it.

Funny Travel Books Written by Comedians

It would come as no surprise that the funniest travel guide usually comes from those written by comedians.

17. Made in Scotland: My Grand Adventures In a Wee Country – Billy Connolly

Made in Scotland- My Grand Adventures In a Wee Country – Billy Connolly

A Sunday Times Bestseller, Made In Scotland: My Grand Adventures in a Wee Country is a hilarious novel by Billy Connolly, Scottish comedian, and national treasure, as he journeys around his homeland and reflects on his Scottish roots.

In  Made in Scotland,  Connolly talks about what it means to be Scottish, both now and in the past, and how Scotland has affected his life.

Of course, being written by a professional stand-up comic means it is packed with Billy’s distinctive Scottish humor, but it is more than that. It’s also a heartfelt love letter to the land and people from his home of Scotland.

18. How to Survive Family Holidays – Jack Whitehall

how to survive family holidays with jack whitehall

Stand-up comedian and TV personality, Jack Whitehall shares his top secrets on How to Survive Family Holidays .

Part memoir, part Lonely Planet Guide Book, this is a middle-class family’s version of what it’s like to travel the globe as a family, and not tear each other’s throats out.

As you might expect, it also has some comedy anecdotes from Jack about his former family holidays, which are both witty and relatable.

With a few comments thrown in from Mommy and Daddy, this whimsical book is a short but hilarious book on travel that will leave you in stitches.

Best Funny Travel Books of All Time

Not all hilarious travel books are written by comedians and based on true events.

Some of the best travel books of all time simply need a good, imaginative story, and an excellent author behind the pen.

These are my all-time favorite funny travel books.

19. T. Rex Time Machine – Jared Chapman

T. Rex Time Machine - Jared Chapman

Of course, I had to include a funny travel guide for children on my list! The T.Rex Time Machine is a hilarious children’s book that tells the story of two hungry dinosaurs that jump into a time machine and transport to the future.

What they see is unbelievable and surreal, as they come to terms with all the wonders of the modern world.

Written by author and illustrator, Jared Chapman, this hilarious novel is packed full of jokes and funny adventures.

His use of bold colors and the adventurous storyline will have your children entertained and giggling throughout.

It will be a book that will stay in your family for generations.

20. The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy – Douglas Adams

hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy

While The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is not your conventional travel book, after all, it does take place in space, it is a hilarious cult classic novel about traveling and exploring new places.

After a bulldozer turns up at Arthur Dent’s home, he didn’t know it, but shortly after it would be the end of planet Earth, and he would find himself hitchhiking on a spaceship.

Along the way, he meets a variety of comical characters who help him come to terms with his new life of space travel and adventure.

The events in this funny travel book are both random and absurd, but pleasantly enjoyable and will have you laughing your socks off!

It’s a lovable story that was ranked number four on the BBC’s “Big Read” , an event designed to find the Nation’s top books.

21. The Sex Lives of Cannibals – J. Maarten Troost

The Sex Lives of Cannibals - J. Maarten Troost

The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific  is a travelogue by author J. Maarten Troost who describes the two years he and his girlfriend spent living on Tarawa atoll, a remote South Pacific Island nation of Kiribati.

And no, before your mind goes wandering, it’s not really about the sex lives of cannibals…jeez!

It talks about how he and his girlfriend adjusted to everyday life on the remote island and built a life for themselves there.

Complete with some unusual people and bizarre and unfamiliar local customs, the author reminisces on his own American complacency towards America’s history.

He also describes his overwhelming fish-based diet, how he handled the extreme heat and ineffective government, the frequent electrical and water shortages, and many other hilarious idiosyncrasies of living on a small and remote island.

22. The Innocents Abroad – Mark Twain

the innocence abroad by mark twain

The Innocents Abroad is a classic funny travel book by highly acclaimed author Mark Twain, famous for writing the Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn novels.

It tells the story of a long excursion between Mark and a group of fellow travelers shortly after the Civil War. The humourous story takes the reader through Paris, Italy, Greece, Egypt, and the Holy Land, during the time of 1869.

During Twain’s life, The Innocents Abroad became his highest-selling book and is hailed as one of the best travel books of all time.

The story is riveting, hilarious, and entertaining, as well as enlightening.

23. Great Railway Bazaar – Paul Theroux

the great railway bazaar by paul theroux

The Great Railway Bazaar is a travelogue by Paul Theroux, who traveled for four months across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, and Southeast Asia, on the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Part memoir, part Lonely Planet-style guidebook, this entertaining railway odyssey is a classic piece of travel literature.

As he travels halfway across the world on the trains, he details his observations and hilarious encounters in a comedic style of travel writing.

While this book is a bit dated compared to the others on this list, it is no doubt a classic funny travel book that would make anyone’s heart fill with joy.

24. Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America – Bill Bryson

the lost continent by bill bryson

Ok, I know I said that I had to choose one of the best Bryson books for this awesome list of the best funny travel books but that was before I remembered The Lost Continent.

With an urge to discover his youth, Bill Bryson embarks on a journey through small towns in America across 38 states.

As he’s rediscovering America, he paints a perfect picture of his boredom, meetings with strangers, and all the colorful experiences he has.

Bryson’s humorous books are loved by the whole family and it’s no wonder he’s an international bestseller.

25. Best. State. Ever: A Florida Man Defends His Homeland – Dave Barry

The Sex Lives of Cannibals - J. Maarten Troost

From New York Times bestselling author, Dave Barry, Best State Ever is a brilliantly funny travel book that defends how Florida is the greatest place on Earth – at least, in the eyes of Barry.

Barry tells a story about how there is always something happening in Florida, and how somehow the state has been labeled as a place of subtropical stupidity. But loyal Floridian Barry begs to differ.

As Barry defends his homeland, he shares some of the most hilarious adventures he’s had in Florida.

It’s including going hunting for the legendary Skunk Ape; visiting the psychic capital of the world, Cassadaga, to have his dog’s aura read; enjoying the thrills of alligator wrestling; and what it’s like to visiting a clothing-optional bar in Key West.

Whatever your opinion of Florida is, you can’t deny that Barry has a very appealing case after reading this book.

26. Don’t Go There: From Chernobyl to North Korea – Adam Fletcher

Don’t Go There- From Chernobyl to North Korea - Adam Fletcher

Don’t Go There is an unusual and hilarious travel memoir by Adam Fletcher has he visits ten of the strangest places on Earth.

To understand why people keep telling him “Don’t go there” he embarks on a journey through a blizzard in China carrying only a pack of biscuits; through the radioactive aftermath of Chornobyl.

It is chased by the Croatian police as he tries to visit the world’s newest country, Liberland, and comes face-to-face with two supposedly dead dictators in North Korea…and so much more.

His journey is both fascinating and hilarious, packed with British humor, and a story that is absolutely unforgettable.

27. Last Chance to See – Douglas Adams & Mark Carwardine

Last Chance to See - Douglas Adams & Mark Carwardine

Last Chance To See is a 1990 novel by the acclaimed author Douglas Adams and co-author and zoologist Mark Carwardine.

In this novel, Adams and Carwardine take the reader on a journey to various locations that they have traveled to. On their travels, they try to find places where they will encounter endangered species on the brink of extinction.

This funny non-fiction travel book starts in Africa and continues on to Asia and the Northern tip of America.

On the hunt for animals, what they find were troublesome tourists, bureaucracy, and poachers.

While this three-year-long adventure highlights the imposing truth about how we need to work to save endangered species, Adams’s humorous travel writing style is evident throughout as he discusses his adventures with Carwardine.

21 funny travel books with (serious) lol potential.

Funny Travel Books Everyone Should Read

Traveling is one of the best ways to get out and explore the world. It doesn’t matter if you have company or are heading out solo – travel offers a unique experience that can’t be replicated at home. But while traveling is great, it isn’t always easy. There are long flights, sleepless nights in a new bed and trying food for the first time (to name just a few).

Luckily there’s also laughter!

In this article I’ve compiled 21 outrageously funny travel books about places from around the world. Whether you’re:

  •  looking to gift these to someone to make them laugh their head off, or
  • want some fun, light reads for yourself during your next vacation

These books will have you laughing until your stomach hurts.

BEST FUNNY TRAVEL BOOKS TO CRACK YOU UP AND INSPIRE YOU

For me, books provide a mental getaway. They give me a chance to venture out and experience stunning, new places vicariously through the stories of others.

And it’s even better when these books tie a solid dose of humor into the story.

I promise, these 21 best funny travel books will 100% crack you up!

1. Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe (1991) – Bill Bryson

travel guides funny

In the 1970s, as a college student, Bryson backpacked Europe with a friend. A decade later, he traveled through the continent again to revisit his experiences. Except that he was now craving the comfort of hotel beds, hearty breakfasts, and slower travel, rather than zipping through countries on the cheap.

Neither Here Nor There is one hilarious travelogue about the changes he saw, how he reflected on cultures, people, food, accents, and his personal growth through the years. And he’s remodeled all of this information into a ridiculously funny travel book.

While some of the jokes might feel a bit dated, this is such a great book to get a headstart on your Europe trip.

Get your copy here.

2. turn right at machu pichu (2011) – mark adams.

Turn Right at Machu Pichu

Adams built a career out of writing for travel and adventure magazines, so it was no surprise that he undertook a hike through the Andes mountains to arrive at Machu Pichu, on the 100th year anniversary of the citadel.

Except that Adams was not quite an adventure traveler himself. The book gets exceedingly funny and real as the writer navigates through the highs and lows of the journey, makes choices he’d never have made otherwise, and after a grueling excursion, he makes pretty interesting discoveries.

The icing on the cake is Adams’s cheery and funny writing style; he’ll put a smile on your face and it’ll stay till the end of the book!

3. A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again (1997) – David Foster Wallace

A supposedly funny thing I'll never do again - book

This is a collection of essays by the late American author, David Foster Wallace, recounting his seven days on a Caribbean cruise ship. The book is filled with details of the extravagant but off-putting lifestyle of the staff and passengers, as well as his own attempts at enjoying himself despite them.

In the book, Wallace writes about his time on the luxury liner, describing it as “an extended moment of expressing through clenched teeth how badly something could be managed”.

His writing is social awkwardness mixed with a sort of desperate need to be polite and patient. It’s weird, funny and at times even a little bit heartwarming.

4. The Innocents Abroad  (1869) – Mark Twain

The innocents abroad

Twain’s journal of his travels through Europe and the middle-east in 1867 is a well-known classic. It’s the first book he ever wrote, and with it he demonstrated so much promise as a humorist.

This is the trip that made Twain into a world-renowned author, and for good reason. He was only in his early twenties when he wrote it, so the book has an innocence about it. But this also makes for great stories of adventures and all kinds of comical mishaps throughout his journey.

One of the interesting things about this book is its perspective; it was not written at a time when people were so mobile. This might make it a tad obsolete, but Twain’s writing captures the opinion of someone who had never before seen or experienced other cultures.

The travel book is not just funny; it’s especially worth a read for anyone who wants to know what traveling was like back in the day.

5. The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America (1989) – Bill Bryson

The Lost Continent

Quirky, insightful, and laugh-out-loud funny, The Lost Continent is an unconventional travelogue of small-town USA by bestselling author Bill Bryson. It’s the perfect companion for anyone planning a trip across the pond or around their own neighborhood.

In the book, Bryson talks about some places on American soil he had never visited before. He takes the reader through small American towns in the middle of nowhere, unknown places, hidden gems if you will.

Full of charming observations about American life from one of the world’s most beloved comic minds, The Lost Continent is Bill Bryson at his best.

6. The Sex Lives of Cannibals (2004) – J. Maarten Troost

The Sex Lives of Cannibals

Troost, the author, more than compensates for the strange title by throwing in punchlines after punchlines in this laugh riot of a book.

Outline:  Troost moved to a remote small island in the Pacific with his girlfriend, and he takes the reader through his journey, the people he meets and the way of life he gets used to.

Is the title what the book is truly about? Is there an investigation into sex lives, cannibals or not? I’ll leave that to your imagination(or as little bait to make you read this book). I’m not a fan of spoilers so I’m definitely not giving away the plot!

Of course there are some parts that are disturbing, but the world abounds with bewildering things that are done in the name of culture. The book draws an interesting contrast between our privileged Western lifestyle and the reclusive, virgin life on a far-out remote island.

What I can tell you is that, while reading this book, I laughed out loud (in public and otherwise) on many occasions and it takes a really good writer to elicit that kind of emotion, ESPECIALLY in public places – I’ve gotten quite a few stares on the bus. This one’s truly one of the funniest travel books to read!

7. Jerusalem: Chronicles from the Holy City (2011) – Guy de Lisle

Jerusalem - Book

First of all, this is no ordinary travel chronicle.

It doesn’t drag on for pages upon pages of monologue, beefed up with the hardest words in a thesaurus. It’s actually a simple, breezy comic-strip illustration of life in a mysterious city.

Lisle moved to Jerusalem with his wife and kids, as an Expat spouse. As it happens, Lisle finds himself witnessing curious customs and strange dispositions in the city.

The book is written from the lens of a North American but the writer sure managed to keep the tone light and humorous. It consists of a series of essays, each piece being very different from the next, some about the history of places, others about daily life in Jerusalem. I think that works to its benefit because it allows for an unparalleled perspective on one of the most complex cities in the world.

Lisle writes about an assortment of people he meets—an Arab man selling falafel on Jaffa Street who takes his food very seriously, a controversial rabbi with antiquated views on women, a family of Armenian immigrants who run the best bakery in town.

Guy’s style of writing is insightful, wry, witty and iconic. And thanks to colorful illustrations, you’ll keep turning pages through this one, I’m telling you!

8. The Great Railway Bazaar (1975) – Paul Theroux

The Great Railway Bazaar

What happens when you give a famous travel writer four months, a rail pass, and the key to a small car? The result is this classic book that has made countless readers fall in love with train travel. Theroux packs his pages with colorful descriptions of the characters he meets on his journey across Asia by rail.

His writing is open and honest, and his observations can be both touching and hilarious. The book is filled with legendary train routes like the Orient Express, the Khyber Pass Local, the Delhi Mail from Jaipur, and the Trans-Siberian Express.

Along the way, Theroux describes his interactions with fellow train passengers—the woman from California who takes forever to tell him her life story, the Cambodian who tries to steal his shoes, and the old Russian peasant man he befriends after sacrificing a chicken in his honor. The Great Railway Bazaar is a classic funny travel book that will make you want to pack your bags and start planning your next train journey.

9. Into the Heart of Borneo (1984) – Redmond O’Hanlon

Into the Heart of Borneo - Book

Some of the scariest, funniest and bizarre things happen on this journey into the exotic jungles of Borneo, an Asian island. Naturalist O’Hanlon, accompanied by a friend and three native guides, sets out into the wild to learn about some of the world’s most primitive tribes.

O’Hanlon’s account is filled with funny observations about cultural clashes between modernity and primal nature. It’s written in a clever, fast-paced, and witty tone. It’s also filled with some very surreal, scary, and bizarre events, making this ridiculously funny travel book a hugely rewarding read.

10. Westward Ha! (1948) – by S.J. Perelman

Westward Ha

This book is a collection of S. J. Perelman’s humorous travel writing, mostly from his time as a foreign correspondent in pre-war Paris and post-war Italy for “The New Yorker.” In this work, Perelman humorously reports on the absurd nature of certain cultural customs he encounters while traveling to places such as France  and Italy.

What makes this book so funny is Perelman’s witty tone of voice while telling his tales. The way he describes the people and customs he encounters often has a satirical edge to it, but there are moments when you can feel S. J.’s genuine love for these European locations. Part travelogue, part comic – and all funny – Westward Ha! is one of the top funny travel books everyone should read.

11. Vroom with a View (2003) – Peter Moore

Vroom with a View

This book is about Peter Moore’s experiences on the road, riding through the streets of Italy on a classic Vespa. What’s amazing is that he sets out on this trip to mark a milestone: his 40th birthday. All of us could stand to learn a little something from him, couldn’t we?

Along the way, Moore soaks in the beauty that is Italy. From Florence to Pisa, he gains a deeper appreciation for the country’s culture and history.

The book paints quite a picture of the Italian back roads and bucolic countryside. In addition to being candid, Moore’s narrative is peppered with humorous anecdotes. This is a very funny travel book that will leave you hankering for a road trip of your own.

12. Queenan Country (2004) – Joe Queenan

Queenan Country

Joe Queenan pulls off a Bill Bryson and takes a trip around Great Britain to get a peek into the English way of life. Some of the things he shares his views on include football, pubs, class structure, popular slang, and architecture. Married to an English woman for 26 years, Queenan is a self-proclaimed “reluctant Anglophile”, and thus, he sets out on a journey of discovery to find out what exactly makes the uniquely English idiosyncrasies and oddities so fascinating.

Filled with some very interesting and humorous descriptions, anecdotes, and comments, Queenan’s book is an excellent read for anyone who is even mildly intrigued by the UK. Especially if you’re traveling to the island soon, don’t forget to pick this one up!

13. Notes from a Small Island (1995) – Bill Bryson

Notes from a Small Island

Yet another Bill Bryson book makes it to this list. Don’t tell me you’re surprised, though? He’s the undisputed king of the travel humor genre!

After living in Britain for 20 years, Bryson makes a farewell journey across the length and breadth of the country. He visits the smallest towns and the busiest cities. The entire book is packaged with umpteen jokes which are very “Bill Bryson”. He’ll make you burst into peels of laughter, sometimes snicker a tad, and he’ll often make you think really hard about how culturally diverse people can be even within the same coordinates.

Especially having spent time in London and having noticed some  typical English habits  that stand out, the book had tons of little nuggets that made me go, “Oh this is too accurate!”

So if you’re from Britain, or if the island holds a special place in your heart, make sure you read this awesome, side-splitting travelogue!

14. Holidays in Hell (1988) – P.J. O’Rourke

Holidays in Hell

Holidays in Hell is a humorous take on the various countries that P.J. O’Rourke visited as a foreign correspondent, all of which were underdeveloped or had suffered through some sort of crisis (mainly war). The book follows his journey along with two other journalists as they explore these countries, interviewing locals and getting themselves into various sorts of fiascos.

This book is great for travel lovers and people who like both comedy and history, as it provides a lot of interesting facts about several countries that readers may not know at first glance. Holidays in Hell gives you the chance to step into someone else’s shoes (or sandals) while they explore these other cultures – and then laugh at their misfortunes.

15. Killing Yourself to Live (2005) – Chuck Klosterman

Killing Yourself to Live

Chuck Klosterman’s book is not just about dying. It’s also about living. And sex, of course. And The Doors.

Looking to find an answer to the question, “Why are we living?”, Klosterman sets out on the road In a rented Ford Taurus, to visit the death sites of several of his musical heroes, including Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain. Along the way, he meets various people who help shape his thoughts about death, like a mortician, a pilot who crashed his plane, and a woman who lost her husband in the September 11 attacks. Klosterman also visits Graceland and spends time with an Elvis impersonator.

The writing is straightforward, witty, and bold. While this was never marketed as a travel book, Klosterman’s travelogue offers a fresh and unexpected perspective to anyone seeking to fuel their wanderlust. Not to mention, it has funny anecdotes aplenty.

16. A Walk In The Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail (1998) – Bill Bryson

A walk in the Woods

Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods is an extremely funny book about his hiking trip along the Appalachian Trail. After spending 20 years abroad, he attempts to reconnect with his homeland by hiking the famous trail.

There are wild encounters with everything from bears to blisters. A Walk in the Woods is a book about staying alive, but it is also about friendship. It’s also about heroes and their follies. It’s a story of Bryson taking on a challenge most people wouldn’t dare attempt. And it ends up being more than that: it’s an epic journey into the heart of America.

The best part about the book is the way Bill Bryson tells a story. His dry humor and attention to detail make this book hard to put down.

A Walk in the Woods has been a New York Times Best Seller book and has sold millions of copies worldwide. It’s one of those travel books that deserve every accolade they get.

17. Out of Sheer Rage: Wrestling with D. H. Lawrence (1997) – Geoff Dyer

Out of Sheer Rage

Here is a book about a writer who wants to write about another writer. Dyer is trying to write a biography on D.H. Lawrence. However, the book is really about Dyer’s struggles with writing. He is a master procrastinator, and so he embarks on (not very well planned) travels to “research” on Lawrence. But he’s really just postponing work.

The book is divided into three parts, each about one of the places Dyer visits while trying to write the Lawrence biography. Through all this dilly-dallying, Dyer ends up spending time in Cornwall, then heading off to Australia, and then ending up in Mexico – still trying to work on the D.H. Lawrence assignment but walking away from it.

Again, not marketed as a travel book but Dyer’s writing makes it one. He has an excellent way of describing landscapes and people so they come alive.

Dyer is a gifted writer and Out of Sheer Rage is one of the funniest travel books ever. A total “genre bender”, you won’t be able to cast the book into a category, but you sure as hell will be snickering the whole time you’re reading it.

18. Are You Experienced? (1997) – William Sutcliffe

Are You Experienced

This is a novel with one of those done-to-death plots.. you know, your archetypal British private school educated prick who takes a gap year and goes on a trip to India to “find himself”. Except that this one is actually quite different.

Dave joins his friend’s girlfriend, Liz, on a visit to India, only, he is secretly in love with her. All’s well until the trip begins, and Dave ends up spending three harrowing months in the country. While Liz seeks spiritual enlightenment, Dave is more preoccupied with catching dysentery, bickering about the unfamiliarity, and breaking his scruples by cheating on his best friend.

There are times when this book is so ridiculous that you can’t stop laughing out loud. It’s also a great insight into the Indian culture – especially from a 90s lens.

Dry humor, a bit of a love story, a first-world sense of entitlement that plays out in hilarious ways, and an insider’s view on one of the most captivating countries in the world – This is a must-read for any travel lover!

19. Last Chance to See (1990) – Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine

Last Chance to See

Last Chance to See is a book by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine about their travels through various countries to spot endangered species for the last time before they go extinct (as the title suggests).

As the author of the best-selling series “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, Douglas Adams has already established that he can write humorously about anything, and his wit is still stronger when writing about technology and science. Mark Carwardine, on the other hand, has traveled to over 100 countries for various zoological documentaries.

The two perfectly complement each other while writing this book, with Douglas Adams’ satirical narration intertwining with Carwardine’s serious personal experience.

The book reads like a memoir (and there is actually an additional chapter at the end, explaining what has happened to the animals since). It is packed with hysterical humor but also deep insight into the human influence on the planet and other life on it.

20. Round Ireland with a Fridge (1998) – Tony Hawks

Round Ireland with a Fridge

Funny travel stories are a dime a dozen. But you don’t often chance upon a travelogue where the writer is also transporting a fridge with them. This is exactly what Tony Hawks did when he set out to circumnavigate the island of Ireland. Hawks wanted to prove a point (based on a drunken bet) that you can do anything if you put your mind to it, and honestly, he does make a solid case.

The fridge seems like a character in the book, as Hawks writes about it as if it was a person. Case in point: he is often joined by his sidekick, “Fridge”, at pubs, bars, in the streets, at parties, even while hitchhiking. Wherever he goes, the fridge always seems to turn heads and spawn conversation topics.

I think the novelty (and wackadoodle-ness) of the plot redounds to the wild popularity of this book. But it’s also Hawk’s witty, frank storytelling and his self-deprecating sense of humor that makes this such a great travel read. He paints a very vivid picture of Irish life and culture, which helps the reader get a good feel of what it’s like there.

The book is a laugh riot from start to finish – a mandatory read in any funny travel books list.

21. The Wrong Way Home (1999) – Peter Moore

The Wrong Way Home

In 1994, Peter Moore decided to travel from London to his homeland, Sydney, overland. It didn’t work out like that. The route he chose was one riddled with all kinds of terrifying adventures.

Moore wanted to take the ol’ hippy trail and travel on a shoestring budget. Of course he doesn’t do enough research and so his journey takes him to such places as Albania, Iran, Afghanistan, and China, instead.

Result: An uproariously funny travel book about things going wrong (as they often do).

Along the way, Moore almost runs out of funds, gets beaten up by a gang of Chinese thugs, befriends a man in Afghanistan who claims to have shot a Russian soldier, and finds himself at the center of a hostage situation in Albania.

Moore’s misadventures and his way of describing them will have readers in stitches. The Wrong Way Home has all the right things that go into making a brilliant travel humor read.

Have you read any of the recommendations above? Which funny travel books have you read that cracked you up? Any you’d like to recommend?

so much excellent info on here, : D.

' data-srcset=

I’ve seen or heard of the movies for a few of that’s and had no idea there were books too. I’m sure the books are much better though.

' data-srcset=

This seems like a great list, I need a new travel book in my life, especially right now when I can’t leave the country! I have only seen the movie “Wild”, maybe I should read the book too!

' data-srcset=

Looks like a fantastic list. I am adding the last two to my wishlist. Thanks for sharing.

' data-srcset=

I’d definitely buy those two Bill Bryson books, especially being a Dutch immigrant in the UK I’d be interested in reading his stories on Britain 🙂 But The Sex Lives of Cannibals sounds interesting too and your non-spoiler review intrigued me! Thanks for these great tips.

' data-srcset=

Such a mix of books, but your description of Wild by Cheryl Strayed really struck a chord with me… Will definitely check it out now!

' data-srcset=

Thanks so much for sharing! Some great suggestions. We get too caught up in YouTube travel vlogs and online blogs that we forget about incredible travel books.

' data-srcset=

Thanks for the list, I’ve added the first one and the one about penguin to my wishlist! I only read The Beach by Garland and didn’t like it at all, very boring and definitely not must-read. A big chunk of it is just a guy gallucinating weird things under drugs… Wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

' data-srcset=

I’m an avid reader, or so I thought! I’ve only read one book on your list, Wild, and heard of John Steinbeck but the others are all foreign to me. It looks like I have some new books to add to my list! What is your favourite?

' data-srcset=

I usually read historical novels, but there are some books here that really caught my eye – The first from Bill Bryson, and the one about Jerusalem! Thanks for sharing this great list 🙂

Coffee Experience With A Cute Sense Of Humor

My days must be started with a cup of coffee. Otherwise, it might be a total mistake and I would feel very depressed for the whole day . As a coffee addict, wherever I go and travel I would love to taste local coffee, and it has become one of my obsessions, to taste different coffee from around the world, enjoying the aroma, acidity, flavor and the packaging. Yes, I mean, I love the way they serve the coffee . Some places have a uniqueness and brilliant way on their coffee culture.

One day in Krabi, Thailand,- while waiting for the rain stopped, I sat at the café facing to the sea and ordered a cup of coffee milk. Some minutes later, what they served on my table, really… really crack me up.  Coffee with milk means coffee plus milk, even funnier, attendant milk in a baby bottle . Well, okay, I’ll take this as a humor as long as it doesn’t serve with human milk… ha ha, Oh please NO !!!

Welcome to the Land of Smiles 🙂

EXPELLIARMUS – Beach Soccer in Lagos, Portugal

“I was with 3 friends in Costa d’Oiro (Lagos, Portugal), and we were playing beach soccer with some students. We said the last goal decides the winner. We were running in a counter-attack, and my best friend was running all by himself towards our empty goal. As I would have never ever reached him, I just yelled from behind “EXPELLIARMUS“ – this Disarming Charm from Harry Potter.

He was laughing so hard that he fell over and actually missed the goal. We lost in the end anyway, but this was by far the funniest moment.“

Chickens, Goats, and Abba – the bizarre bus through Ethiopia

I always use public transport; I believe it is the best way of getting to know a country. On route from Lake Wenchi to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia I had not only the bumpiest journey of my life but also the most bizarre.

Chickens casually strolling around nibbling on my toes, two goats strapped on the roof, people sitting on my lap meanwhile the driver also acted as a DJ playing only ABBA tunes for 3 hours. Loved it.

Once in Sayulita, Mexico, I told my Life Story to Paco the Dog

Two margaritas, some shots of the bartender’s prized tequila, two veggie tacos, now time to make it back to my tent on the beach.  The day was spent surfing the mild waves of Sayulita, Mexico. My new best friend was a dog I named Paco who waited for me at the door of the bar and yes he liked that leftover veggie taco, there was no saving it for morning, he was insistent.

That night, I found myself telling my life story to Paco . I know he knew what I was talking about, I could tell by the way he looked at me with his big brown eyes.  Next morning he was gone, that afternoon I would find him sitting next to a couple giving them that look of understanding as they sipped on their margaritas talking to him and feeding him chips and guacamole. Had a good laugh.

Monkeys in Costa Rica — Is this monkey a Psychologist?

Day 5 of my Costa Rican trip and I had yet to see a monkey.

I was pretty disappointed… I had heard so much about the monkeys!  We had a rainforest hike scheduled, and I was convinced that today was the day! Throughout the hike, the monkeys taunted me with their howling, but I still couldn’t see them.

As we neared the end of the hike on a hanging bridge, I started to accept that an animal encounter wasn’t in the cards. Then there they were…a large branch with several monkeys hung over us. They were chasing each other, jumping between branches, and for a long moment, two monkeys were directly above me.

One of the monkeys even sat there looking at me, scratching his head as if he was trying to figure me out . It was awesome to see them in their natural surroundings and an experience I’ll never forget.

My first Songkran – The biggest Waterfight in the World

One day last year our friends asked us if we would like to meet them in Thailand (we live in Germany) and without hesitation we said “yes!”

The timing was perfect, and we planned the trip around Songkran, a.k.a. the Thai New Year. Songkran is an experience that is so difficult to describe. Imagine being part of the world’s largest water fight , streets packed full of people at all hours, pouring buckets of water on each other and everyone armed with water guns !

Needless to say, my husband, our friends and I relived our childhoods running around Bangkok shooting people with our water guns and remaining drenched day and night. Simply put, it was a BLAST!

We learned our lesson in Seville’s bull ring

It was whilst standing staring at the golden sand of the bull ring in the city of Seville, Spain that our sun burnt legs decided that they had had enough for the day and gave up on us.

The remainder of our tour of the site was an informative half hour of agony. The day before we had decided to spend the day sunbathing on a deserted island near Faro, Portugal, and as it was windy we had forgone all sun protection.

The result was clear when we awoke the next day transformed into two lobsters. However, we only had one full day in Seville and were determined to make the most of it.

The beauty of the Alcázar and grandeur of the Cathedral served as a tonic for the pain, not to mention the amazing tapas! It was only towards the end of the day at the bull ring that we were reminded how foolish we had been.  Top tip for Seville: Remember your Sun Cream!

Tinos, Mykonos – what does it matter?

After 6 hours on a ferry from Athens to Mykonos , my best friend and I got off the ferry to realize our bus that was supposed to get us wasn’t there. Confused, we walked around to no avail.

We approached an old Greek man and asked: “ Mykonos ?” He replied: “ Oxi, Tinos. ”

We. messed. up.

What do we do? Thank God for Greek police officers! They were SO helpful. They sent us to a nearby travel office, and we were told to take the night ferry to Mykonos. Okay, so what do we do for the afternoon? Food! We went to Palaia Pallada and had the BEST, most authentic Greek food with the sweetest waiters! We then visited Panagia of Tinos. Time to go! But wait, they wouldn’t let us on the ferry because our ticket was for the morning trip. After begging, we got on, and off to Mykonos…again.

I yelled at the Thai Monkeys, but they did not speak Italian

While traveling across Thailand, we arrived in Lopburi, a small city with archaeological sites and monkeys. They are everywhere: in the streets, on the trees, trying to enter the houses and waiting at the platform for the next train to arrive. They are cute, but they are definitely too many.

One day we were walking to the hostel with our bag stuffed with teas and amazing Thai snacks when someone ripped it off… no, it wasn’t someone, it was a monkey showing us its teeth! Suddenly a monkey-gang gathered and shared our food: one took a bottle, one had the snacks. I recall saying loud: “Give food back to me, rude monkeys! ” while Ale was trying to explain to me that monkeys are NOT supposed to speak or understand Italian.

Taxi driver need 3 things: good breaks, good horn, good luck!

One of my all-time favorite countries to travel in is India. If you have ever been, you know that this is one of the craziest countries in the world to drive in.

The streets are crowded, the cars share the road with cows, camels, horses, dogs, bicycles, huge trailers, tuk-tuks, buses and pretty much everything that moves.

The rules: there are no rules. They use their horn for pretty much everything and if you want to drive past someone you just honk your horn and drive around. When we took taxis in the northern parts of the country, I saw my life flash before my eyes every five minutes.

In New Delhi, we had an awesome taxi-driver that drove us around the city for a couple of days. In the world’s second most populous city, you have to be pretty crazy to become a taxi driver. At least that is what we thought sitting in the backseat of his taxi listening to AR Rahman, the Mozart of Madras blasting through the broken speakers whilst dodging cars and cows.

I ask him: “ so what makes a good taxi driver in Delhi? ”

He says: “ a good taxi driver needs three things; good breaks, good horn and good luck! ”

Laughing and smiling after he gave us his words of wisdom, he continued to drive us safely through the streets of New Delhi.

We wrote up a big new guide to the best hostels in Delhi .

I love Bill Bryson’s books especially A Walk in the Woods and In a Sunburned Country. I never knew Twain wrote a travelogue. That’s something that I’ll definitely pick up. Sounds great.

' src=

Nice list — haven’t heard of a lot of these. Hitchhiker’s Guide is great. The Clumsiest People in Europe sounds wicked. A children’s author? Funny.

' src=

There really is nobody funnier or more knowledgeable on geography, history and English than Bill Bryson. I have all of his books and hope there are more coming . . .

' src=

Andi of My Beautiful Adventures

Can’t wait to check out the books I haven’t yet read on this list, nice!

Michael Hodson

@Alice and Dianne – Agreed. Bryson is very funny.

@Runawat Brit – Another funny book. Thanks for the recommendation.

Great Travels

I have to admit I have not read any of these despite being an avid reader. I have heard of #8 though – the movie, that is. And #6 sounds already funny and promising. Short stories are best when travelling.

a short walk in the hindu kush – eric newby had me laughing a lot!

@Great Travels There’s No Toilet Paper is great for short stories.

@Tom Strandberg Good one, thanks for sharing.

' src=

Great list. When I finish my current freelance book assignment, which by the way, is not even remotely related to travel or humorous, I’ll give a few of these a read.

' src=

Thank you for this great list. I love Bryson and The Hitchhikers Guide has been on my must-read list for years.

' src=

Chris Booth

I really enjoyed Nicholas Bouvier’s ‘The Way of the World’. There are some great comedy moments in there as well as a lot of thought-provoking tangents. I’d recommend it to anyone.

There are heaps out there! Thanks for the suggestions. My favorites come from Peter Moore, Brian Thacker and Tony Hawk (not the skateboarder!)

50 Funny Travel Quotes to Inspire Your Wanderlust

Traveling the world can be an adventure filled with unforgettable experiences, and sometimes, it’s the funny moments that make the journey even more memorable.

Whether you’re backpacking across Europe, cruising the Caribbean, or exploring the mysteries of Asia, a good laugh is a universal language that connects us all. So, pack your sense of humor and enjoy these humorous travel quotes that will hopefully bring a smile to your face, no matter where you are on the globe.

50 Hilarious Travel Quotes

To change it up, I included my own spin to these quotes, sharing a snippet of my own adventures and memories after each, bringing these words to life with tales from my travel diary.

“I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” – Susan Sontag

For the insatiable traveler, this quote is a witty nod to the never-ending bucket list. We’ve decided that our travel bucket list isn’t actually in a bucket anymore. It’s more like an expandable pocket dimension.

“I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.” – Mark Twain

So true! Traveling together non-stop for a year is how Micki and I learned marriage could work for us. If you can survive months living in a tiny van and still enjoy their company, you can likely get along forever.

“If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine, it’s lethal”-  Paulo Coelho

It’s only funny because it’s true. Statistically, train connections in the USA are safer than getting out of bed every day. When in doubt, ride a train!

Birds literally just eat, travel, and shit on things they don’t like. I don’t know about you, but that’s the lifestyle I’m striving for. – Anonymous

Who knew that birdbrained might actually be a complement to some people. Having wings would be handy at times though.

“Jet Lag is for Amateurs.” – Dick Clark

This playful quip reminds us that true globetrotters know how to handle time zone changes with a grin. While it affects us all one way or another, pushing through it means you can get on with your journey sooner. Onward and upward!

“Airplane travel is nature’s way of making you look like your passport photo.” – Al Gore

A humorous observation about the less-than-glamorous side of air travel. It’s why we always laugh when people go out of their way to look good on their passport pictures. We’ve found it’s better to look so run down that no matter how badly you’re doing on your day of travel that they won’t think something is wrong with you. Same logic applies to your driver’s license.

“I travel a lot, I hate having my life disrupted by routine.” – Caskie Stinnett

Routine is just one of the many things nomads and wanderers try to avoid. Why have a repeat of yesterday when tomorrow can be anything?

“I’m a travel addict on the road to recovery. Just kidding, I’m headed to the airport.” – Anonymous

For those who find the allure of the airport irresistible, this quote is a humorous nod to our wanderlust. We purposely bought a house on one side of the city just to be closer to the airport. Just saying…

“Some tourists think Amsterdam is a city of sin, but in truth, it is a city of freedom. And in freedom, most people find sin.” – John Green

For me, this is a clever observation on the liberating spirit of travel and the adventures we’ll find when embracing that freedom. If the devil on your shoulder wins over the angel, that’s on you and not your destination. 😉

“There should be sympathy cards for having to go back to work after vacation.” – Anonymous

We’ve all felt the post-vacation blues, and this quote captures that sentiment perfectly.

“Kilometers are shorter than miles. Save gas, take your next trip in kilometers.” – George Carlin

A humorous take on the metric system by the legendary comedian, encouraging us to think differently about distances. One trick to happiness when traveling is to always round up or down until the number seems palatable. If you’re on a tight budget, forget I said that though.

“I follow my heart… and it usually leads me to the airport.” – Anonymous

Another witty testament to the heart’s desire for new adventures and experiences. While some people dread airports, we’ve always loved them.

“No place is ever as bad as they tell you it’s going to be.” – Chuck Thompson

Whether it’s travel, a movie, a book or a meal, always take other peoples opinions with a grain of salt. Most experiences are unique and we’ve both hated a city and loved it, with our expectations being the only difference between visits. Finding a nice place to sleep and a good restaurant goes a long way too.

“I’ve got 99 problems, but I’m on vacation and I’m ignoring them all!” – Anonymous

The perfect motto for anyone looking to temporarily escape the stresses of everyday life. Or, sell all your belongings and move your problems to another country where at least they’ll have a different accent.

Boy, those French. They have a different word for everything. – Steve Martin

A good reminder that there is no word for sorrow or regret in Timatuathian. Of course that language itself doesn’t exist so why would those two words exist anyway?

“Once the travel bug bites there is no known antidote, and I know that I shall be happily infected until the end of my life.” – Michael Palin

Ah, the joy and pain of the travel bug. It has a ferocious bite and often refuses to let go no matter how many miles you’ve put on or the amount of countries you’ve seen. The more you see, the more you realize there is to see and therein lies the problem.

Witty travel quotes, the second half

Remember, as St. Augustine once said, the world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page. So turn the page, explore, and don’t forget to laugh along the way!

“You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy a plane ticket, and that’s kind of the same thing.” – Anonymous

A lighthearted reminder of how travel can bring joy into our lives. While it doesn’t take a lot of money to travel, more certainly never hurts.

“My favorite thing to do is go where I’ve never been.” – Diane Arbus

A simple yet profound statement about the essence of exploration and discovery. While it’s often the new that drives some, sometimes it can also be the old that they prefer to see in their rear view mirror.

“I would give up traveling but I’m not a quitter” – Anonymous

This quote is another playful turn on the hard work ethic and how sometimes when faced with adversity, it’s best to just bear down and keep at it, even if it’s enjoyable.

“A tourist is someone who drives thousands of miles to get a photo in front of their car.” – Anonymous

A playful jab at the classic tourist photo, this quote pokes fun at humans often absurd travel habits. Don’t worry, we have dozens of those pics as well. For instance, here we are in front of…

“The worst thing about being a tourist is having other tourists recognize you as a tourist.” – Russell Baker

This quote humorously captures the irony of trying to blend in, only to be spotted a mile away. We have tons of pics over the years wearing certain clothing from Thai pants in Thailand to an Outback hat in Australia and all they scream at us now is tourist in bright letters.

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta

A funny reminder that travel can render us speechless with its beauty before filling us with tales to tell.

“A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.” – Lao Tzu

This ancient wisdom reminds us that sometimes the journey is more important than the destination. While I’m guessing Lao wasn’t spanning the globe, pretty sure he enjoyed his travels and was secretly prophesizing about his luggage never arriving.

“Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

While not overly humorous in it’s own right, it does remind me of a story about a friend who decided to forge his own path once on a hike and ended up needing to be cut down from a tree hours later. It was a thing but definitely adds to the adage that a good journey can be made great with a little extra humor thrown in.

Hilarious and inspiring travel quotes, the third half

Sometimes all you need to add to a travel memory is a dash of humor to make it unforgettable. Here are some more funny travel quotes to awaken your wanderlust.

“People don’t take trips, trips take people.” – John Steinbeck

While the imagery of a trip as a literal persona kidnapping a person, throwing them on a plane and making them have fun makes me laugh, this is in truth a thought-provoking quote that suggests travel has the power to transform us.

Side note: A Transformer named Trip would be just as amusing to me.

“A child on a farm sees a plane fly overhead and dreams of a faraway place. A traveler on the plane sees the farmhouse and dreams of home.” – Carl Burns

This ironic quote captures the contrasting perspectives of the traveler and the stay-at-home dreamer. While we often dream of things we miss, having the ability to miss them in the first place is reason enough to jump on a plane and go someplace for a while. Perspective often needs distance to achieve itself.

“Travel is like an endless university. You never stop learning.” – Harvey Lloyd

A reminder that travel educates us in ways that go beyond traditional learning. I recall our trip to the Galapagos Islands where we not only learned about Charles Darwin’s thoughts on evolution but also the fact to get to the ferry early so we don’t have to sit in the open back for 2 hours getting soaked from the rain…

“A road trip is a way for the whole family to spend time together and annoy each other in interesting new places.” – Tom Lichtenheld

This funny quote definitely highlights the trials and tribulations of traveling with family. While new places and activities can hold some interest, 2 snippy children will argue no matter what’s in front of them. However, now they get to do it in another country!

“ If you are going through hell, keep going.” – Winston Churchill

Winston obviously knew what it was like driving in LA but I digress, the truth is that a journey isn’t over until it’s over and even then, you might not end up where you thought you would. The unknown is half the fun.

“Live your life by a compass not a clock.” – Stephen Covey

Obviously Covey wasn’t a clock maker, but his adage remains. It’s the direction we take in life that determines our situation and that can’t always be done on a set timetable. Inflexibility in travel means inflexibility in life. Bending a little sometimes gives you a different view on where you are and where you’re heading. It’s also good for the back and knees.

“Your body is not a temple, it’s an amusement park. Enjoy the ride.”- Anthony Bourdain

Anthony loved travel, meeting new people and trying new foods. Sure, that 2000 calorie piece of cake shouldn’t be on your everyday menu but are you seriously not going to try it once? Live a little.

“Don’t tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you travelled.” – Mohammed

The difference between knowledge and wisdom can often be measured by the amount of footsteps we’ve taken to get there. While the scholar reads about it, the traveler experiences it, tastes it, smells it, and digests it in such a way that they’re forever changed . The willingness to put oneself out there continually and the wisdom gained from such actions can speak volumes about a person.

“From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere.” – Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss’ characters strode the globe in their pursuits to teach and entertain and often found humor in the most unlikely places. I once found it in a sock, under a rock, in a shoe, surrounded by goo and so can you.

“It is not the destination where you end up but the mishaps and memories you create along the way.”- Penelope Riley

Another quote not so humorous in it’s wording but funny in the mishaps department. Some of our most memorable moments on the road happened due to one mishap or another. Even our worst travel day ended with us saying “at least it will be an entertaining story one day.”

“A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.” – John A. Shedd

A classic example of a travel metaphor implying that we aren’t meant to stay in one place forever. We need movement to fulfill our purpose, regardless of the outcome. Though imagining all of us as little ships with legs walking around everywhere is also pretty funny to me.

“The further I go, the closer to me I get.” – Andrew McCarthy

Me is a person on the other side of the world doing something amazing at any moment. The closer to me I get, the more me I become. While I can’t always be me, I get solace in knowing that me is out there and I look forward to the day I get to be me again.

“A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it.” – John Steinbeck

As Micki and I get closer to celebrating our 20th anniversary, the truth of this statement hits me. It’s all about the journey. Preventing the boat from capsizing isn’t about control, it’s about paying attention, watching out for hidden rocks and moving and changing with the river as opposed to fighting against it. Like a journey or a marriage, a river will take you where rivers take you. Enjoy the ride.

“ That moment when you’re asked where you got something and you answer with the name of the country, not the name of the store.” – Anonymous

We’ve been guilty of this dozens of times. For a while, everything we displayed was from another country or another trip. These days we’ve packed and unpacked our things too many times to even bother showcasing them anymore but we do own some nice boxes. That one we filled in Thailand, that one in Australia, that one in South America…

“ Going on a trip. Need about 5 outfits. I’ve packed 35 just to be safe.” – Anonymous

We’ve all done it though now we’ve learned from our mistakes and realize that in life we often dress to impress. The beauty of travel is most people don’t see you every day. Learn to get creative with your outfits. Maybe buy a nice hat and look out the window more often.

“Some beautiful paths can’t be discovered without getting lost.” – Erol Ozan

When you’re too busy following the path, sometimes you don’t realize you’re actually missing the journey. Explore beyond the path, there is always more to experience. More usually meaning beer, wine, food, music, art, dance and all the other good things in life worth pursuing.

“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.”- Terry Pratchett

We travel not only to see new things but also to be able to return to things we miss. Like distance, absence also gives perspective.

“ Ironing boards are surfboards that gave up their dreams and got a boring job. Don’t be an ironing board.” – Anonymous

Don’t be an ironing board is my new mantra. For the record, I also don’t want to be an anchor (it holds people back), a yesterday (it’s never in the present) or a sock (nothing funny, I just dislike socks).

“The world is waiting for you. Good Luck. Travel Safe. Go!” – Phil Keoghan

While travel isn’t always an amazing race, sometimes it can feel that way. Slow it down, explore, enjoy! Now Go!

“ Nothing lasts forever, except the day before you start your vacation.” – Gayland Anderson

No truer words have been spoken! Anticipation of an upcoming trip is still high on my list of things I look forward to.

“ You define a good flight by negatives: you didn’t get hijacked, you didn’t crash, you didn’t throw up, you weren’t late, you weren’t nauseated by the food. So you are grateful.” – Paul Theroux

The beauty of a new thing isn’t that it’s perfect or that it will instantly replace everything that was similar that came before. It’s the start of a new branch of something that can one day become amazing and transformative. Air travel started out rough (both figuratively and literally) and has gotten to the point where it can be a joy to sit down on a flight. I am grateful for that.

“You can’t control the past, but you can control where you go next.” – Kirsten Hubbard

Again we talk about control. While our journey should be allowed to happen as it happens, that doesn’t mean that sometimes you can’t point it in another direction. As winter approaches here, south seems prudent to me right now.

“I wonder if the ocean smells different on the other side of the world.” – J.A. Redmerski

Take it from me, it does. Everything does. Expectation often colors our reality. Color away my friends, color away.

“And that’s the wonderful thing about family travel: it provides you with experiences that will remain locked forever in the scar tissue of your mind.” – Dave Barry

Haha, family travel is a great way to experience the exact same trip from multiple points of view. A parent and a toddler can have the exact same day yet have very different takes on a situation. Same can be said for travel. Want to see the world differently? Explore it via your children and you’ll have a whole new understanding of the world. Hopefully it’s a positive experience for everyone but if not, at least there’s probably a good story in there somewhere.

May your travels be filled with laughter and joy. Remember, every journey is an opportunity for new stories and a good chuckle. Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer, especially when it comes with a side of laughter!

WHEN TRAVEL GOES WRONG: Best Funny & Humorous Travel Stories

In BLOG , FUN CORNER by Clelia Mattana 18 October, 2018 88 Comments

Contents - Open To Read

DO YOU WANT TO READ SOME AWESOME FUNNY TRAVEL STORIES?

Then, my friend, you are in the right place because not only you’ll read some truly funny stories here, but I am actually The REAL MASTER OF DISASTER! They should give me an Oscar for  “Best Funny travel story” category. Yes, I’m that bad!

But as someone wise once said:

“The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.”

  Mark Twain

A  good funny travel story is usually the result of something that has gone (terribly)wrong. So there shouldn’t be anything to laugh about right? Except for the fact that you not only survived the accident but now you’re actually secretly proud to tell your friends all about your funny story over and over. I know I’m right…Confess! 😀

Those “Huh oh” moments can be quite unpleasant experiences, but you instantly know that they will make to the collection of excellent  and interesting humorous stories for years to come ! Heck, you might even score a date or two if you find an ironic person (Just saying!)

I love funny travel stories so much! They show the less glamorous part of traveling and are an important part of travel itself. They represent the challenge, the adventure, the thrill. The real deal, not those perfect Instagram shots we ALL know are staged. DUH!

Travel-horror-stories-funny-travel-stories

So to quiet them down a bit I started to write a few humorous stories on FB and now I’m trying to collect them all and transfer my funny moments (disasters) while traveling in here too.

I just added the infamous one I had this year (2019 as we speak) when I first arrived in Australia for the first time 😀

But back to this article: I had a mission!

funny-horror-travel-stories-dont-panic-sign

To search and collect all the funny or at least humorous stories related to travel around the web and put them together in a top ten post, easy right? Not quite!

To reach my goal I started extensive researches on blogs and various websites. I even searched the most remote pages of Google to spot them and it wasn’t as easy as I thought!

But, at least, what I found and selected in the end, is definitely worth reading ! Someof the ones I’ve discovered are incredibly funny and humorous stories, others are creepy or beautifully written, whilst some others are quite spicy (stay away if you are a prude).

No matter how different they are, they all have one thing in common: They made me laugh or chuckle a bit . And in any case, if something goes REALLY WRONG, there are legal ways and consultancies services you can count on (which is a release! phewwww).

BEFORE GETTING TO THE FUN STUFF, A SERIOUS NOTE:

As a Master of Disaster other than the funny ones, I have so many horror stories to tell! I got injured and sick during my trips and they stole my possessions during a bus ride in Thailand once (including 1000 euros cash).

So a word of advice is in order: be extra careful when you choose the travel insurance for your trip ! (Click here to see what I use , they literally saved my life and finances more than once).

I never go without it and even if in some of these funny stories it might not be necessary, trust me that in other cases… it most certainly is!

SO BACK TO THE FUNNY STORIES FINALLY!

clelia-funny-amstrdam

Yeah, that would be me, with a whole tomato in my mouth in a pub in Amsterdam. WHY? There is no why, I simply like being silly 🙂

For each story, I will insert a quick excerpt to give you a glimpse of what the fuss is all about, and I’ll put the relevant link to the article if you want to read the filthy details 🙂

BONUS MATERIAL:

Scroll till the end to find an article that seriously cracked me up! It’s not technically a story, but it’s definitely travel related!

1| 24 HOURS TO GET TO MELBOURNE (AND ALMOST SLEEP UNDER A BRIDGE)

Category: Funny Stories

“I had dreamed of that moment for hours… That fantastic moment where I was given the key to my room and I would have seen the most precious thing in the world: A BED. What I see instead is a sofa in the living room of an unknown house, located in between the entrance door and the kitchen door. I swear I was about to faint. “

Travel-horror-stories-funny-travel-stories

This is a new series of my blog. Given that my friends and followers on Fb love the live chronicles of my horror-funny travel stories I decided to start posting them here.

In this occasion… well, this is how the land of Kangaroos welcomed me on my first night Down Undernight, after 24 hours in the air, lost in space-time and angry like a stray cat 😀

1| ALMOST KILLED BY A TURKISH HAIRDRESSER IN GERMANY

Category: funny stories

“The hairdresser proceeded to shave around the perimeter of my hairline, focusing mostly on the back of my neck. He moved the razor in quick little strokes, handling its edge with feline grace. I made the mistake of picturing how easily he could take my eye out, or how quickly he might give me a Sweeney Todd, and it was then my complexion faded from ‘Eggshell Uncomfortable’ to ‘Chartreuse Sputum.’”

turkish-barber-funny-germany-hairdresser-axe

This is an absolutely brilliant story, reporting how a simple question about politics can change the course of a simple hair cut from magic to tragic.

Will our hero succumb under the claws of the Turkish hairdresser?

2 |THE MYSTERIOUS EUROPEAN SHOWER

Category: Humorous Stories

“There were no knobs or handles of any kind that I could turn to get the water running. There was this little console inside, which I tried to use. At first, it seemed self-explanatory. It had dials for water temperature and water pressure, and a start/stop button! Plus, it was all in English ! Surely I could figure this out, right?”

3| CULINARY EXPERIMENTS

Category: Funny/Quirky stories

“While in Vang Vieng, Laos, two other travelers and I decided to visit the local market one evening. The idea was that we would each purchase some kind of food item to bring back to the guesthouse and share with the group for a nice local dinner”

Vang-Vieng-Laos

The post I’m linking to is a collection of stories from Derek Baron. He decided to put together a list of the dumbest things he did during his 14 years of extensive traveling.

The result is a quite hilarious post where, among other funny experiences, Derek tells us how he decided to eat a Rat, in an attempt to try the local cousin. How did the experiment go? Read on to discover it!

4| THAI MASSAGE OR THAI TORTURE?

Category: Humorous stories

Her black eyes examined me closely, wrinkles forming in her chestnut brown facial skin as she visually assessed me prior to my massage. “You big boy. I think you need two hours.”  “No, I’m good with one.”

Would you like a massage??!

Would you like a massage??!

Beware of who you put your trust in. A relaxation massage turned into a Karate match against an old Thai lady. Who is going to be the winner?

5 |CHASED DOWN A MOUNTAIN BY SOME LOCAL WOMEN

“Wow, these people are so friendly!” I thought to myself. This is exactly the kind of cultural encounter every traveler hopes for – walking down a mountain en route to a rural village, water buffaloes munching away on shrubs, women from a local hill tribe joining for a walk. Why this is the kind of stuff makes the feature story on the National Geographic! Right?

We’ve all been there: captured by the innocent smiles and kindness of the locals in a foreign land… Be careful when putting your pink glasses on, as you will also probably need a good pair of shoes to run away as fast as possible! Click below to read Audrey’s escape plan!

6 |DEATH ON THE BOAT

Category: Black humor / quirky Stories

“I immediately felt my chest tighten and my heart began to race as my mind replayed the events of the past few days – had I been using insect repellent? Had I been covered up? Had I been bitten?  I was suddenly convinced that I was about to die too”

Smiles before the nightmare begins

Lauren Smiling before the nightmare begins

What would you do if you find yourself trapped on a slow boat with a poor dead body lying next to you? This is obviously not a funny story, but a rather creepy adventure on the Mekong river. Lauren has an entire anthology of weird and funny-tragic stories on her website.

clelia-book-how-not-to-travel-the-world

There I am, bumming at the airport before my flight and reading Lauren’s book!

A must-read! And now she has a book! Well actually I also have her book because her stories are just super fun, I totally recommend it, check it out in here !

7 |”MONKEY BUSINESS”. ON A CHICKEN BUS…

Category: Spicy Travel Stories

“As the bus ride progressed and the chicken bus going like crazy everyone sliding back and forth in every direction I noticed something weird. I kept feeling his leg purposely touching my leg so I, of course, started making my leg touch his as well”

P1010091-1

Warning: Spicy Adventure ahead! 🙂 Some travel bloggers are quite adventurous and brave enough to tell us all about their hot encounters…

This story is probably one of the most popular spicy tales of the past few years. No need to get embarrassed tough. I actually admire those people who can be very open about their life, and the story is pretty hilarious! want to know more? Put the kids to sleep first 🙂

8| FLATTERY GOES A LONG WAY

“Hello! You are beautiful,” he began. While my first reaction was to keep on walking, I stopped to listen anyway. Because you have to admit, the man had a valid point.

IMG_47111

Honestly? I didn’t know which post to choose from Sally’s dozen funny stories! She just drags you into her clumsy funny world so easily!

This time, she writes about how flattery seems to be her weak point. Apparently, she can’t resist a compliment and she was convinced to join a group of Chinese tourists, that treats her like the star of the hour!

Category: Funny /spicy /Humorous stories

“It was hot. Korean summer hot. Melting makeup hot. Seriously, summer in Korea gets up into the 30s and feels like plus 40s with 100% humidity and not a drop of rain. I had undone the top of my shirt to let a little air in and I suppose I should mention my breasts”

I’ve had so many crazy experiences travelling. Once in Cambodia I was caught on a bus where the drivers were smuggling drugs behind my chair! Just last week I was hitch hiking and I got caught up in the middle of a street race on a single motorbike with two other people, two bags and no helmets. You can read about it on my blog

Not always..it depends on how much risk are you willing to take!

Even tho I’m European I can totally relate to European shower trouble 😉 Love this post!

European showers rock! 🙂 glad you liked the post Anna!

Is that a rat? Ewww!

Yes it is! I have to say Earl was very brave to try it 🙂

Funny stories and unforeseen mishaps are always part of traveling. This is what makes it more memorable for us. Despite these, I know we can all say that without these funny stories, your travel wouldn’t be as fun as it was.

Hey Helen, if you have any funny story to add, feel free to do so 🙂

I love funny travel stories – and writing about them. My favourite lately was called the Perils of Potties in Japan – or something like that – featuring a hitech toilet that wouldn’t stop spurting water all over the place.

Hey Anabel, i’ve heard tat Japanese toilets are deadly.. I will search for the article, must be quite something!

I went on a road trip in Iceland in June and absolutely loved it! I would tell people (and did in a blogpost) to register with a free app that alerts search and rescue people if you vanish. Register at http://www.safetravel.is and download the free 112 Iceland app before you go. It could literally save your life – a lot of people wander off and get themselves in bad situations every year but if you use this they will save you from yourself (for free but a hearty donation should be considered if it’s your own fault!).

Thanks for the tip Kay!

Thanks for collect these stories. Will subscribes to get more story from you.

Glad you enjoyed it Louis!

Cool tales. I only travel so I don’t run out of dinner party conversations.. ;P The things that don’t go quite right are often the best stories!

true…people are more interested in the accidents than our amazing travel tales..

Love this blog…the main reason being is as travelers we ALL have something happen during our adventures. Regardless if they are truly bad or bizarre my thoughts on these events turn out to be some of our biggest highlights! These are the stories we will find ourselves repeating to eager ears back home and on the road. Of course they seem devistating as they are happening but we always have to look for the best in these situations and the most positive way out of these awkward moments. Cherish them – One Life, One Planet. @monkeyslick

Hi Evan, Very true…these are the best stories to showcase upon our return home!

We’d got our own funny travel stories following experiences close to home. Here’s one from when we visited a hotel in the south of the island: http://www.puretravel.com/Guide/Travel_writing_competition/Travel_Writing_Competition_2012_Entries_Page2/Cock_and_ball(s) . After reading, you’ll be relieved to discover that there are no photos.

ahah i’m actually pretty relieved yes 🙂

Thought you might be.

I saw your request in our FB group and was sorry I couldn’t contribute any! These are hilarious though; the image of Talon and the old lady cracks me up 😀

Hei Aleah, pity you couldn’t contribute, i was hoping to have a top 20 but was quite difficult!

I appreciate the mention above and link to my post!

My pleasure!…Eating a rat is not something you see everyday for sure!

Thanks for featuring my story Klelia!

These are a great collection of quirky tales.

Great finds! I love these quirky stories and that could well be me trying to figure out how to use that shower!

Yeah some of them are really brilliant, it surprised me that i couldn’t find more of them on the web!Oh and for the shower…even if i’m european, i struggled with it at first too!

Thanks also for including my funny quotes article, they certainly make flying more enjoyable.

As for the Thai massage I can certainly vouch for that. I had a one hour head massage and was screaming pain with every touch. I promise you, never, ever again!

hahaha tell me about the Thai Massage, I totally understand why you don’t want to try again! I also had some quite unpleasant experiences…now I only go for a more relaxing oil massage 🙂

Loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooollll…when finished barking loudly with laughter, I might share a story or two…

Fire away! You can’t imagine how difficult has been to find these stories around! 🙂

Get ready to laugh, blush, learn some important lessons, and be reminded that travel isn’t always perfect. In fact, sometimes it can be downright hard.

Embarrassing Travel Stories That Will Make You Blush

1. an embarrassing moment on an italian train.

If you enjoy short funny travel stories , you’ll love this.

My now-husband and I were at the end of an Italy road trip , and were dropping off our rental car in Naples, where we would board a train to Milan.

Because Naples is known as the birthplace of pizza, we decided to get some before our departure.

A few locals recommended L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele, so off we went, thinking we could grab a quick slice.

We waited over two hours for a small pie and then had to race for our train. It was our first time taking the train in Naples, too, so we weren’t even positive where the station was.

Luckily we made it, though I was extremely sweaty once we got to our seats. In an attempt to cool down, I went to the bathroom and changed into a dry bra and t-shirt, throwing the drenched clothing in my backpack.

Because we were disorganized from our mad dash, I started rummaging through my backpack and moving items around once I got back to my seat.

I must have been really disoriented, because a few minutes later after I had sat back down the man in the seat behind me tapped me on the shoulder.

“Umm…I believe this is yours.”

It was my sweaty bra and t-shirt, which had somehow fallen into his lap.

Turning bright red, I took the garments, turned around, and stayed silent for the rest of the trip.

Talk about stories of embarrassing moments!

2. That time I fell into a fountain in Australia

If you love crazy travel stories that are also funny, here is one of my hilarious embarrassing stories from when I studied abroad in Sydney, Australia.

It involves me making a fool of myself in front of my brand new friends and also showing them how terribly uncoordinated I am.

My most embarrassing travel story

I’ve shared the story in video form (above) for a fun twist.

This is one of my favorite short travel stories , and one my friends from study abroad still bring up to this day. Luckily, we laugh about it now!

I’m not going to lie, I momentarily contemplated hopping on a plane back home to New York, as this truly is one of my most embarrassing stories.

embarrassing funny stories on a tokyo metro

3. No touching in Japan

One of my favorite travel experience stories takes place in Japan.

The Japanese are the most polite, civilized, and obliging people we’ve ever met. Everything is done with a sweet smile and a polite bow.

We also noticed that in Japanese culture, personal space is a big deal, as is touching — or should I say, no touching!

Whereas quite a few Western cultures are docile with each other when it comes to general greetings — such as a kiss on the cheek in France and Italy, or a hug or handshake in the USA and UK — in Japan, this is a big fat no!

I learned this the hard way, and it turned out to be one of those funny embarrassing moments in public.

During a packed Tokyo metro journey one morning, I gave up my seat to an elderly Japanese woman who was standing up. She warmly accepted my offer and was very grateful to me — so grateful that she began to perform a series of very dramatic bows to me.

I wanted to tell her it was no big deal and did this by reaching out to pat her shoulder (this was pre-Covid days!).

This would be a natural thing to do back home to someone who had done something sweet to me and I wanted to express gratitude.

But as soon as I did this, the woman’s smile disappeared and the bowing stopped!

She gave me a look of concern, then cringed and briskly took her seat. Honestly, she looked at me like I was some kind of perpetrator but quickly stopped when the confused expression on my face showed that I meant her no harm.

I later learned that in Japan, touching is a big no-no, especially with people you’ve never met.

As such, the traditional form of greeting someone in Japan is to bow to each other with around 1 meter of distance so as to respect personal space.

In hindsight, I should have reacted to the woman by smiling and bowing back to her.

Real life embarrassing stories in a Las Vegas casino

4. Aussie slang confusion

We were two Aussie travelers experiencing some of the highlights of the USA.

I had been around the block traveling for a few years and knew some of the language variations between the two English-speaking countries.

My friend however, was a bit of a novice when it came to this.

After arriving in the bright shiny city of Las Vegas, we ventured out to explore. A popular choice was watching one of the stage shows available at nearly every casino on the strip.

As I had booked most of our activities before leaving Australia, we were asked to come and collect the tickets for our show earlier in the day.

Now, let me preface what comes next with this:

When it comes to Aussie slang, the best words are the ones that sound like something familiar but mean something completely different.

So when picking up the tickets from the booking clerk, we were trying to understand the signage and dress code suitable for entering the theatre.

My friend then proceeded to ask:

“Can we wear thongs?”

There was a blank stare and a cheeky smirk from the booking guy and I instantly replied to him that my friend wasn’t asking him if she needed to wear “underwear,” but was in fact asking if we could wear flip-flops.

When understanding what he thought she meant, my friend’s face turned bright red. The booking guy then started laughing loudly while saying it was okay to wear that kind of footwear.

It didn’t take my friend long to walk away in embarrassment. There were no more questions to ask after that.

Stories of embarrassing moments on a Mexico beach

5. Naked and afraid in Mexico

If you love funny embarrassing stories, here is when I ended up naked at the beach in Mexico.

I learned the hard way that the beaches in Mexico are not to be trifled with!

I’d been swimming at a local beach on Mexico’s Pacific Coast almost every day without any problems, floating lazily in the waves with the sun on my face and not a care in the world.

Until one particular day everything changed. The water looked much as it always did — there were no red flags flying or other beach warnings — but within minutes I found myself drifting further and further from the beach.

I wasn’t alone, either. Many other people were looking at the shore and attempting to swim in, only to get pummelled in the cresting waves.

Just as I started to really tire of treading water, there appeared to be a lull in the wave action so I decided to make a mad paddle to shore.

It didn’t take long before I got caught in a breaking wave. It churned me around in the surf like a washing machine then tossed me onto the sand at the water’s edge.

I clawed my way up the sand and away from the incoming waves. Even though my mouth was full of sand and my hair twisted like a corkscrew on top of my head, I was so grateful to be alive. I just lay there on the sand gulping for air and staring at the sun.

Until I realized that in the turbulent wave action both the top and bottom of my bikini had been ripped off my body and were nowhere to be seen. I was stark naked.

The only saving grace was that the same thing had happened to an elderly man and there were actually two of us in the buff in the sand.

Thank goodness for the kindness of strangers , as some kind onlookers ran over to help and provided us with some towels so we could find our beach umbrellas. I was grateful to be alive but very embarrassed!

embarrassing stories in Istanbul Airport

6. Sick in Turkey

Unfortunately, I’m all too familiar with throwing up in airports and on planes. I tend to push myself to my limits and on my honeymoon in Turkey, I was no different.

After a week of whirlwind wedding activities, which included chauffeuring a car full of Argentinian in-laws all over Texas, my husband and I boarded a 15-hour flight to Istanbul.

I ignored my mother-in-law’s advice to only take one sleeping pill and popped a second confidently. It had been eight hours since the first; surely, I was fine.

I was  not  fine.

“Do you see ants?” I remember asking my new husband.

He did! We may have been in bad shape but at least we hallucinated together. Talk about a romantic travel love story !

We landed with zero rest. Did it stop us? Of course not!

Ant hallucinations and exhaustion be damned, we were going to explore Istanbul.

And explore we did. We squeezed every minute out of that 20-hour layover before we found ourselves back at the airport, even more exhausted than before.

We got into the massive queue to check-in for our flight. Immediately I realized all was not well. I told my husband that I didn’t feel quite right but leaving our spot in this long line was not an option.

“Suck it up, Erin,” I told myself. “It won’t be too long.”

In the meantime, I scoped out the room, searching for the closest bathroom. I saw the iconic sign in the distance, the triangle dress that tells everyone everywhere that there’s a restroom here. I kept my eye on it, my oasis, for the entire wait, plotting my route to salvation.

A short eternity later the gate agent handed me back my passport.

I was off; power walking to the restroom with everything around me a blur.

Barely making it, I barged in — in the clumsy way that only a loud American in Europe can do — grabbed the closest trash can, and got sick.

That is, until I raised my gaze and felt immediate shame.

I was not in the bathroom at all, but a prayer room!

Devout Muslim women from around the world were knelt down in prayer. I had desecrated their prayer room.

Mumbling apologies I can only hope they understood I slinked out of the room vowing never to exhaust myself in such a way ever again.

embarrassing true stories in Athens

7. When nature calls in Greece

I had just landed in Athens from Santorini. Before leaving Athens for my next destination, I had about nine hours to kill.

As I was backpacking, I did not want to go to a hotel. Instead, I planned to explore Athens on foot.

I had a heavy backpack with me, though even so, I was happy to see the ruins and architecture of Athens.

It was a warm day, but I tried not to drink too much water to avoid needing the bathroom.

After five hours of walking, I could not resist any further. I was both hungry and thirsty.

I did not have much money left as I was approaching the end of the Euro trip; however, I entered a restaurant and ordered some food. I don’t know how many bottles of free tap water I drank, but it was the tastiest water I ever had!

When I left the restaurant, I had about three more hours to catch a flight.

Before going to the airport, I wanted to have one last look at Athens.

All was going well, until about 30 minutes later when I felt immense pressure in my bladder.

I knew at that very moment that I couldn’t wait until I got to the airport. Thinking back to how much water I’d drank at the restaurant, I wanted to kick myself — though instead started looking for a toilet.

I was in a place surrounded by historic buildings, so I was sure that I could find a toilet inside of any of them; however, after storming into one of them I found that it was closed.

Time was running out.

I could not think straight. The Greek letters listed everywhere only made me more puzzled. I searched for a place on Google Maps, but no luck.

Then I saw a large green park; the National Garden.

Entering it, I knew it was not right, however; I didn’t have any alternative. All that I needed was a dark, quiet place.

Luck was not on my side that day; the garden was well lit with plenty of people jogging.

I didn’t care.

I unzipped, and stood in the middle of the garden, with shouts of disbelief around me making my ears warm and red with embarrassment.

But the only thing that mattered at that moment was the heavenly pleasure I felt in those 30 seconds (yes, you read it right; it was more than a liter, I guess!).

I ran away as fast as I could afterward!

embarrassing moment stories in a California porn studio

8. That time I ended up in a porn studio

I normally organize my own adventures and am not great at paying attention when other people are in charge.

So, it’s no wonder that I accidentally ended up on a porn studio tour.

I blame Alvin.

You see, Alvin runs an urbex photography group that I’m a member of.

We go out and shoot things like tunnels, ghost towns, and abandoned buildings. For such a pretty city, you’ll be surprised to know that there are quite a few places like that in San Francisco.

Alvin arranged a shoot in San Francisco’s Mission District , which included a visit to the historic Mission Dolores cemetery, an outside art studio, and The Armory.

When Alvin described The Armory, here’s what I registered:

A historic military building that was used as an arsenal during WWI. The building is cool because remnants of the now-covered Mission Creek rise up from the ground and flow through a channel in the basement.

Here’s what I didn’t register:

At the time of our tour, The Armory was owned by a porn magnate and was used as a film studio and S&M event venue.

My friend who had previously done the same tour swears that she told me, but all I heard was blah blah cemetery blah blah creek in basemen t.

I showed up on the appointed night to learn that our tour guide specialized in a very particular kind of Japanese rope bondage and that she was sponsored by a rope company from Texas that also supplied rodeos.

I also learned what BDSM stands for — prior to the illuminating tour, I had only heard of the S and M parts.

Additionally, I learned that robots can be configured with very insistent motorized prosthetic devices.

And also, that the studio provided worker’s compensation insurance and deployed a sophisticated database that housed all of their freelance talent, tagged by skill.

The creek in the basement was pretty cool, too.

most embarrassing stories in Southeast Asia

9. Getting a bit too drunk in Cambodia

On my first ever backpacking trip I went to Southeast Asia .

Just like most budget backpackers, I loved to have a few drinks in the evening — especially when they were cheap!

However, when I visited the island of Koh Rong in Cambodia, that’s when the cheap drinks didn’t work out so well for me.

Koh Rong is the perfect place for backpackers who want to party.

This tiny sandy island is full of bars and lively hostels. I managed to pick up a 750 ml bottle of rum for only $1 USD and I was thrilled! After a big day in the sun, I was going to really enjoy some rum, and that’s exactly what I did.

My sister, boyfriend, and I all went to a friend’s hostel that night.

Long story short, I ended up drinking nearly the entire bottle of rum all to myself! I don’t remember getting back to our hostel, but my boyfriend tells me he had to pretty much carry me there and lift me into bed.

I was staying in a dormitory room and had the top bunk. As with many hostels, my bunk bed didn’t have a railing. Me, in my drunken passed-out slumber, actually rolled off the bed in my sleep!

Thump!

I hit the concrete floor hard and woke up startled only after feeling the pain, which is when I also began screaming.

I’d pretty much belly-flopped onto the floor. The thump was very loud and so were my screams and drunken cries.

Besides my body being bruised, my ego was, too.

I woke up the entire 10-bed dorm room and strangers were actually laughing at me. Talk about a travel fail !

Needless to say, I got made fun of by other travelers for the duration of my stay in Koh Rong, and my sister and boyfriend still bring it up today.

I did learn a lesson, though:

Never sleep on the top bunk without a railing, especially if you’ll be drinking rum!

10. An embarrassing bathroom moment on a coach

It was a sunny summer morning, and I was super excited to finally take my mom to explore London. I was a student and lived in the southeast of England.

We woke up early and headed to the bus station to get onto the two-hour coach to London. We sat at the front of the bus, and straight away I regretted eating that dodgy fish the night prior.

My stomach was cramping, and the feeling of needing the toilet was building up. The coach was already on the motorway with no scheduled stops until London.

You know that feeling when the physiological need is so strong you know you won’t be able to ignore it, and you must go?

Well, that’s how bad it was.

Luckily, the coach had a toilet, so my mom suggested I use it. I really had no other option, so I went.

The cubicle was tiny, and it was not easy to use the toilet inside a moving bus. When I got out and walked back to my seat, I noticed everyone was covering their faces and either looking away or giving me a disgusted glance.

When I got back to my seat, my mom told me the whole bus received the “toilet waft” through the air conditioning.

I was so embarrassed I wanted to disappear, and my amused mother could not stop giggling. She still brings the story up on family gatherings.

crazy travel stories on an airplane

11. Flash flight

The year was 1999, and my significant other suggested we ring in the Millennium in Hawaii.

On our final day in Hawaii, we planned a trip from Oahu to Maui. We leisurely drove the Road to Hana, keeping track of the time to get to our reservation at the fancy restaurant for dinner and making the last flight out back to Oahu.

In typical fashion, we were running late. I rushed to change into my super cute summer dress and strappy sandals that I bought specifically for this occasion.

And we barely made it on time for the reservation!

After scarfing down dinner and dessert, we headed to the airport for the last flight out with no time to spare. We swiftly returned our rental car and then sprinted to the gate.

Of course, we were easily 10 minutes too late for the last flight out. We rushed anyways to the gate to see if, by chance, we could make it. After running by a line of people about 30 deep to our empty appearing gate, we asked frantically, “Can we still board?”

She replied that our gate had changed to that one, as she pointed to the gate with the line.

Whew! We made it.

At this point, I was extremely embarrassed, though my S.O. — who was trying to calm me down — didn’t really know why.

After we boarded and settled in, I confessed that my cute little summer dress had tucked up under my backpack while running to the empty gate.

He says, “So what? They saw your underwear. Whatever.”

That was the kicker.

When we rushed to change to get to the restaurant on time, I could not find my underwear! My derriere was in full effect for the entire line waiting to board the flight.

I will be forever grateful (and mortified) for the multiple beers sent my way during that flight. I guess they won’t forget it either.

Embarrassing Travel Stories ice skating

12. Queen of the ice

My family and I were on a cruise vacation when my husband, my daughter (who was 14 years old at the time), and I decided to try out the onboard ice skating rink on one of the sea days.

I grew up in Minnesota — though hadn’t ice skated in years — and my family had never ice skated before, which made me the most experienced in the group.

As we were going around the rink, I decided to go backward to look at them and help guide them on their skates.

Big mistake.

As I was turning, I stumbled and fell, banging my head on the ice rink wall.

Even though I was wearing a helmet, I still ended up with a concussion and barely remember the next three days of our trip!

funny travel stories on an airplane in the sky

13. When planes almost collide

My embarrassing story happened in the air!

After an extremely hectic week of back-to-back travel, I was terribly tired and all I wanted was a comfortable bed to crash into.

But here I was, standing in a long immigration queue on my way to another destination. By the time I cleared every hurdle including waiting to board my flight, I could hardly keep my eyes open.

I fell fast asleep on the plane as soon as I put on my seat belt — even before the doors were closed. The flight was in the evening and as usual, I had my window seat.

After dozing off for a few hours, I suddenly woke up to some announcements made by the captain. Probably we were passing through turbulence. It was night time and most of the passengers were fast asleep.

With groggy eyes, I looked out of the window and was horrified!

I saw a small plane flying parallel to ours. The plane was neither slowing down nor changing its direction — it was as if it was participating in a race with us.

At that moment I thought the two planes were quickly going to collide. Seriously, this was quickly becoming one of my most dangerous travel stories !

I also thought it was my duty to inform the captain. Perhaps he hadn’t noticed that this tiny plane was so close to ours! I shook my sleeping co-passenger to let me out and called the air-hostess, too.

When I told them the situation, my co-passenger leaned over my seat to look out. And then he laughed out loud. I seriously thought he had lost his mind.

What I was told next made me go very red in the cheeks:

It was actually the wing of our airplane and not another plane. I wanted to vanish from the scene.

Moral of the story:

Sleep well before taking a flight.

craziest travel stories in Myanmar

14. The unexpected power of women’s panties

One day, during our backpacking trip in Myanmar, we decided to go to quite a distant and non-touristy area in Rakhine State to visit the beautiful temple town of Mrauk U.

When we arrived at our accommodation, a kind elderly lady greeted us. She spoke just a few words in English.

Noticing that there was a washing machine for guests at the reception, we decided it was time to do laundry. We brought a bag with our clothes and the woman pointed to her husband and told us that he would take it.

And then it happened.

The man and woman started a very loud Burmese conversation. We didn’t understand a word.

Her husband threw the laundry bag back to us. And the angry woman started pointing to us, first to my boyfriend and later to me, but we still didn’t understand the situation, so we just took our clothes and went back to the room. Well, we were surprised and also very curious about what had happened, so we did a few Google searches and immediately discovered the reason:

Burmese people are very superstitious and believe that a man can’t touch a woman’s underwear because this will “sap them of their power.”

So the poor lady thought we wanted to hurt her husband!

travel writer and photographer had an embarrassing moment in Zambia

15. Getting fined for public indecency

While traveling Africa along the east coast, I made friends with the crew and passengers on an overland truck at a campsite in Malawi. The group was on a tour through several African countries.

Everyone on the truck agreed it was okay for me to get a ride with them from Malawi to Zambia.

It was a hot day and I drank a lot of water on the way. We arrived on the border with Zambia after a long day of driving, which is when I urgently started looking around for a toilet.

It was not much of a border post and I headed for a tree not far away on this barren landscape, thinking it was far enough away, and that nobody would really spot me behind the tree.

Unfortunately, I was very wrong and the Zambian police took “public indecency” in the middle of nowhere very seriously.

On the way back I was met by an officer with a gun who took me to his superior. He told me that I broke the law, it was seen as a serious offense, and that he was going to charge me with public indecency.

Ultimately, I was issued a fine — that I had to go and pay at the magistrate’s office in the nearby town.

It was an uncomfortable situation since I was not even a paying client on the tour I was hitching a ride with. I was very grateful that the tour leader did not just leave me there and that the truck took me to pay the fine with a police escort.

Overall, I was quite embarrassed that the guests had to drive the detour to town and wait for me in the truck on an extremely hot day while I paid the penalty at the government office.

16. A massage in Cambodia

Angkor Wat in Cambodia is undoubtedly one of the world’s most iconic destinations and deservedly a bucket list item for many.

However, my overriding memory of our fabulous day exploring Angkor Wat is unfortunately not the sunrise reflecting in the lily pond but a massage, a pair of pajamas at least three sizes too small, and an unwelcome appearance.

Following our incredible Angkor Wat tour, the complimentary massage from our hotel would be just what we needed.

Two young local women greeted my wife and me and provided us with the garments we needed to change into.

My wife went to the sole changing room so I stayed in the massage room and disrobed.

As I removed the garments from their packaging it was clear that the extra-large I’d requested to cover my 6’2″ frame was far too small.

Somehow I managed to squeeze myself into the three quarter length linen trousers and decided not to breathe deeply for the next 45 minutes.

As I bent over to place my clothes neatly in the corner, the door to the room opened, and in walked the two massage therapists and my wife. This noise and their greetings covering the unmistakable sounds of ripping cloth from my crotch area.

Believing this could not be too bad I laid down on my front next to my wife as instructed and started to relax as the oils were applied and the massage began.

I remained very conscious of the rip but thought if I stayed in that position there wouldn’t be any issues. Unfortunately it was only a couple of minutes before I was asked to roll over and move into a variety of new positions.

Almost immediately both therapists started whispering and sniggering — with my wife completely unaware of my predicament and the difficult situation unfolding.

The massage finished with a vigorous neck and head massage, so the therapist asked me to sit with my head down between my legs. As I moved into position the cause of the laughter was literally swinging beneath me. I was gobsmacked and clueless as to how to react.

Suffice to say I tipped rather generously that day and was incredibly relieved that my wife found the funny side when I answered her question as to why I thought they were laughing throughout the massage.

On our various travels through Asia I’ve always been careful to ensure we follow traditions and not mistakenly cause offence.

Well, that afternoon I completely ruined years of hard work!

embarrassing stories funny in Cape Town

17. That time my clothes were stolen by baboons

I spent the summer of 2018 in Cape Town, well-known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It’s famed not only for its natural setting and dramatic coastline but also for the wildlife living in the surrounding region.

Little did I know I would be having a very close encounter with one of its most visible and intriguing animals, the chacma baboons, on a day out at the beach.

The city’s good weather year-round makes it a popular destination for beach lovers.

It was almost midday when the African sun is at its peak, so I decided to go for a swim, leaving everything behind and wrapping myself in a towel on the beach.

The waters along the Cape Coast are some of the coldest and I couldn’t have been away for more than 10 minutes before noticing a group of these baboons grabbling through my belongings.

A quick dash towards them and they scattered — though unfortunately they did not leave much behind. My clothes were missing and those that remained were left tattered.

The good news:

The baboons hadn’t shown much interest in my wallet, but I was forced to spend the rest of the day — including my way back home on public transportation — in nothing but short swim trunks and an embarrassed smile.

Following the incident, I heard that the baboons of Cape Point are the only ones in their species that mine the beaches for seafood. And being protected under environmental law, they have become brazen in their attempts, raiding houses and belongings, and even mugging people.

Lesson learned.

18. Lost menstrual cup

One of the unglamorous things female travelers have to think about is our menstrual cycle. It is not a fun topic, but it is our reality.

Over the last few years, I made the decision to switch to more eco-friendly sustainable options that do not involve plastic.

This particular story starts with my family’s big move to Mexico, during the pandemic.

My cycle decided to show up two days before the big move, so that was fun. I headed to the airport confident in my menstrual cup because it hadn’t failed me in several months.

While on the flight I had to remove the cup and couldn’t get it back in. The passengers could hear me rattling and moving things around in the lavatory, as I tried to get the menstrual cup inserted.

After almost 10 minutes I gave up and decided to return back up to my seat, and use my back-up protection.

When I exited the lavatory, I could see everyone staring at me, wondering why there was so much commotion.

After sitting down I realized I didn’t have my menstrual cup. The first thought that came to mind was that I accidentally flushed the cup.

I started to panic. Did I drop it on my way back to my seat? What if someone finds it?

After 15 minutes, I returned to the lavatory to see if my cup was on the floor.

Finally, it hit me. I went through the trash in the lavatory and found my menstrual cup. I was so relieved to find it still wrapped in the paper towel.

Although it is funny now, at the time I was freaking out.

stories of embarrassing moments in Las Vegas

19. Dropping my underwear in Vegas

Before I get into the nitty-gritty of how, one faithful hot and sweaty August day, I displayed my panties to the world, there are a few details you need to know.

The last time I had been to Vegas, in 2015, all of the hotels on The Strip had free parking. Fast forward to 2017, I had flown to Vegas for a quick and cheap weekend trip.

My Vegas crew got me free entrance and drinks to the day club at MGM Grand, so after I landed, I hopped in my rental car and drove to the hotel.

Only to find out that parking at the MGM Grand was now paid.

And expensive.

So, in the name of being a budget queen, I drove to the very far away Venetian Hotel because they were one of the only hotels left with free parking.

But that left me with another problem:

I was now going to be late for the party.

Free entry — but most importantly free drinks — was only available for a limited time, and I now had only 45 minutes to get down The Strip and into the pool of the MGM Grand if I wanted to secure my free wristband.

I quickly changed into my swimsuit in the car, throwing a dress on top and a change of clothes — aka what I had been wearing on the plane — in my mini backpack as I dashed out of the parking lot.

Practically jogging down the strip in the blazing summer sun, I shuffled around in my backpack for my sunscreen. After half-hazardly sloshing it over my arms, face, and parts of my leg — I had to do a little hop to get my ankles as I walked — I slung my backpack to the side to plop the sunscreen back in.

A few seconds later, someone tapped me on the shoulder:

“Um, Miss…”

I turned around and spotted what everyone was now looking at. A lump of colorful (worn) underwear.

My worn underwear.

Just as I was about to pretend I had never in my life seen that panda MeUndies print before, the person who tapped me added, loudly, “It fell out of your backpack.”

I snatched up my underwear and ran into the nearest hotel lobby. I never made it to the pool party.

embarrassing true stories in Hong Kong

20. The locked hotel room in Hong Kong

One of my most embarrassing travel moments was the time when I was locked out of my room in Hong Kong during Chinese New Year.

After a long flight from Auckland, New Zealand, I was exhausted and just wanted to get to my hostel as soon as possible.

Because it was Chinese New Year, I had already booked a room as I didn’t want to run the risk of ending up on the street because everything was full. I had booked a room in one of the countless hostels in the Chungking Mansions complex.

That was a mistake. A big mistake. Don’t go there. Ever!

It’s a maze — and not in a fun way. My husband and I walked around for an hour after we finally managed to find what was supposed to be our room; however, when we arrived, there was nobody there.

So I called the number scribbled on a piece of paper pasted on the door and was told my reservation was canceled.

Just like that.

There I was, on Chinese New Year, bone-tired and without a place to stay.

But wait, it gets worse…

Out of thin air, a guy emerged and told me he had a room for me. As dodgy as I found this, I was too tired to care so I went with him.

He showed me the room and I quickly agreed. So far so good.

But then I made the monumental mistake of leaving the room to see the parade — because I couldn’t justify being in Hong Kong during Chinese New Year and not watching the parade that passed in front of Chungking Mansions.

I mean, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Tired as I was, I pulled myself together and went to see the parade. That was the only fun part of this disastrous night.

When I got back to my room and put the key in the lock nothing happened. I pushed and wriggled and cursed and tried and finally burst out in tears because I couldn’t get the door to open.

Luckily the people in the adjourning room came to check out the noise of me trying to break down the door and gave me the number of the guy who had shown me to the room.

So, I called him and after an hour he finally arrived and opened the door. Needless to say, I changed hotels the next day.

travel guides funny

Like t-shirts, mugs will always be used, no matter how much laughter or chaotic energy the mug delivers.

I personally adore my Como Te Llamas travel mug , and I know other travelers will too.

8. Funny Travel Cosmetics Bag

travel guides funny

While we’re discussing these funny takes on basic travel essentials , let’s talk about this funny travel cosmetics bag that sarcastically reads, “Might be makeup. Might be snacks.”

As a full-time traveler, I’ve noticed that travel cosmetics bags tend to get really dirty over the year and need to be replaced relatively often. That’s why I know cosmetic bags make great practical funny travel gifts .

9. Car Trash Can

travel guides funny

Have you ever been inside a traveler’s car right after one of their road trips? If not, consider yourself lucky.

If you have, you know why this car trash can makes an appearance on this practical yet funny travel gift guide .

My husband and I have this exact car trash can, and I must admit that it has been a cleanliness game changer for our frequent road trips. It attaches right to the back of any headrest for easy accessibility and to maximize crammed car space.

10. Collapsible Female Urination Device

travel guides funny

This funny travel gift is for the female travelers in your life.

Sometimes, nature calls while she’s in nature. Sometimes, nature calls where the toilets are so grimy that the thought of sitting or even hovering makes her gag.

Luckily, this collapsible standing urination device for women removes both of these problems and inspires a hard laugh! (Don’t worry, it comes with a travel bag to keep her other belongings clean.)

11. Travel Bidet

travel guides funny

On the same note, while toilet paper is (hopefully) a regular household item in your home country, it’s a luxury in other countries.

12. Public Toilet Survival Kit

travel guides funny

In addition, this public toilet survival kit is for the traveler that, well, doesn’t have the travel bidet or collapsible urination device on hand.

Have you seen some of those airport bathrooms?

13. Instant Underwear

Now travelers can truly kick back (pun intended), relax and enjoy the flight. Thank you, airplane footrest!

17. LED Gloves (Funny Travel Gifts)

travel guides funny

Similarly, although these LED gloves look like something extraterrestrial, they would be completely practical for those same travelers and adventurers who would like the previously mentioned LED beanie.

Pair the LED beanie and gloves together for the ultimate practical, funny travel gift set !

18. Inverted Windproof Umbrella

travel guides funny

Additionally, windproof umbrellas are 100% practical for every traveler . After all, no one likes a floppy umbrella that breaks from wind.

Apart from their naturally awkward appearances, this windproof umbrella in particular depicts ironically sunny skies overhead, which is actually pretty funny considering they only use it in the rain.

19. Universal Phone Stand And Necklace

travel guides funny

Travelers can use this bendable phone holder as a hotel phone stand, or, better yet, they can hang this puppy around their necks to watch a movie in-flight without uncomfortably holding their arms up or looking down into their laps.

My sisters, husband and I all have one, and even though it’s probably pretty comical to see from a stranger’s point of view, it’s actually really handy (or should I say, hand-free)!

20. Airplane Phone Mount (Funny Travel Gifts)

travel guides funny

If your traveling giftee isn’t outrageous enough to sport the hands-free phone necklace from above, they’ll love this bestselling pocket-size airplane phone mount .

As extra as it may seem, other passengers will be downright jealous when they find out their seat-back doesn’t have a built-in TV screen.

Plus, it makes a fabulous travel stocking stuffer ! Even I was excited to receive it in my stocking last year.

21. Portable Bluetooth Speaker Keychain

travel guides funny

Another funny travel gift idea to consider giving is this portable bluetooth speaker keychain .

Although it would be odd to wear on your belt loop or bag, any travelers would love to bring this portable bluetooth speaker to the beach, to their hotel or on a hike.

Want to give a high quality version of this bluetooth speaker instead? Opt for this JBL Clip bluetooth speaker .

22. Dude Wipes On-The-Go

travel guides funny

Now, we talked about the funny parts of feminine hygiene earlier, so it would only be fair to mention a funny travel gift for male hygiene. These on-the-go Dude Wipes are flushable and fragrance free, ensuring every man a clean wipe and chuckle whether they’re at home or abroad.

23. Inflatable Neck Pillow

travel guides funny

Next up, this inflatable neck pillow puts a hilarious spin on the every basic neck pillow.

Imagine your funny traveler friends blowing this baby up from their long-haul flight airplane seat, placing it on their lap, resting their face in the top hole.

They might look foolish, but they’ll probably get the best night’s sleep of all the airplane passengers.

24. Sand Imprint Flip Flops

travel guides funny

I love these sand imprint flip flops because from first glance, they look like normal everyday flip flops.

But, once your gift recipient steps foot on any sandy beach, a laughable “free hugs” imprint will be following shortly behind.

25. Funny Travel Gift Beach Towel

travel guides funny

Similarly, whether at the sandy beach or at the chlorinated pool, a funny beach towel is a gift that any traveler would actually use.

This face-butt towel is hilarious for obvious reasons, yet it’s also totally practical. After all, who wants to get their bottom-half germs on their face?

travel guides funny

Otherwise, if that towel is too niche, this one hundred dollar bill beach towel takes the term “sand dollar” to a whole other level.

26. Funny Beach Hat

travel guides funny

Moreover, to match the funny beach towel, you could get a funny beach hat.

I particularly love this hat featuring Kermit sipping his tea .

travel guides funny

Or, for a more subtle funny travel gift , this pizza bucket hat is a great alternative.

Plus, these hats will protect your traveler’s eyes and face from the sun, which is always important.

27. Funny Swim Trunks

travel guides funny

Alternatively, a funny pair of swim trunks, such as these pineapple cat swim trunks , are another subtle way for your traveler to spark a laugh or two while on vacation.

I love that these swim trunks and the funny beach hats are both (somehow) still trendy, as this means these funny travel gifts will actually be put to good use.

28. Portable Neck Fan With Lanyard

travel guides funny

Furthermore, This handheld rechargeable fan  will make a  comical yet totally practical gift for any traveler .

I wore a hanging neck fan like this one on our trip to Orlando, Florida, and I  could not recommend the fan enough . I love that it has  various strong fan settings , a  lanyard to keep your hands free , a  tilting feature  for when you’re sitting at a table or laying out on the beach, and it’s  rechargeable .

27. Funny Passport Holder

travel guides funny

Like the funny luggage tags, any traveler with a sense of humor would totally use a funny passport holder, like this in-flight bingo passport holder

travel guides funny

This “Don’t Touch Me” passport holder will prevent passport theft and inspire a good laugh simultaneously.

28. Funny Sleeping Eye Mask

travel guides funny

Next, travelers secretly want this “Wake Me For The Drink Cart” sleeping eye mask for several reasons.

First, it will guarantee they don’t miss getting a drink from the flight attendant , ensure good long-haul flight rest and protect their skin from bacterial growth that non-silk eye masks encourage.

31. PeeBuddy

travel guides funny

Now, you may be thinking that the previous female urination device was, well, gross. So, here’s an pee-rfect (too far?) alternative: the PeeBuddy disposable female urination devices .

If you’re favorite traveler is disgusted by public bathrooms and/or frequents long outdoor hikes, these disposable PeeBuddies will be of great assistance. Trust me.

32. On-The-Go Kitchen Utensil Keychain

travel guides funny

Moving on from the bathroom to the kitchen, this on-the-go kitchen utensil keychain offers an adorable way to cook on the road .

Whether camping, condo cooking or Airbnb baking, this keychain is useful and just way too cute.

Disclaimer: make sure to remind the gift recipient to pack this funny travel gift in his or her checked bag. Airport security probably won’t think it’s as cute as we do.

33. Airplane Drink Holder

travel guides funny

Speaking of in-flight drinks, this airplane drink holder gadget will keep your traveler’s hands free while flying.

There’s nothing more annoying than trying to subtly slide into your airplane seat next to strangers, only to become clumsy thanks to full hands.

34. Luggage Drink Caddy

travel guides funny

Another handy — or should I say, hands-free — travel gadget that some travelers may say looks funny but all travelers will say is useful is this luggage drink caddy .

Similar to the previous drink holder, this drink caddy will keep traveler hands free in the airport . They can easily place their airport Starbucks and overpriced water bottles inside it to stay empty handed.

Plus, the zipper back is a perfect pocket to keep passports and important travel documents easily accessible .

35. Cup Holder Tray

travel guides funny

Last, but certainly not least, this hilarious yet practical cup holder tray will aid avid road trippers with their on-the-go fast food feasts.

Ease the messy (not to mention dangerous) attempt to chow on a Big Mac while driving with this funny travel gift idea .
