13 Reasons to Visit Disneyland in December

Christmas trees dot the parks at Disneyland in December.

Some of the more obvious reasons to visit Disneyland in December apply to both of the theme parks in California. For that reason, let’s look at those reasons to visit first.

1. Holiday Decor and Lights

Stepping into Disneyland in December is like stepping into a fairy tale brought to life. Accordingly, the park is adorned with an awe-inspiring array of holiday decorations and lights . 2. Seasonal Snacks and Treats

As you explore the park, your senses will also be tantalized by the delightful aroma of seasonal treats wafting through the air. From gingerbread cookies adorned with intricate designs to peppermint-flavored indulgences , Disneyland’s culinary wizards create an array of delectable delights that capture the essence of the holiday season.

You can explore the attractions, shows, and parades without worrying about extreme heat or cold, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the magic of Disneyland.

5. Celebrate Walt’s Birthday

December 5th holds special significance for Disney enthusiasts as it marks the birthday of the visionary behind the magic, Walt Disney himself. As a result, Disneyland takes this opportunity to celebrate the man who laid the foundation for the enchanting world that continues to captivate millions. From themed events to small nods throughout the park, Walt’s influence is palpable during this time.

Tips for Visiting Disneyland in December

Christmas at Disneyland is a magical time.

While the enchantment of Disneyland in December is undeniable, a little planning can go a long way. This ensures that your visit is as seamless and magical as possible. Let’s take a look at some valuable tips that I have developed based on my own Disney travels. Consider implementing these for a truly unforgettable experience.

Book Ahead of Time

December is a popular time to visit Disneyland. The holiday season can draw a significant number of visitors. To avoid potential disappointments, it’s wise to book your tickets and accommodations ahead of time. This will not only save you time but also grant you peace of mind, knowing that your magical adventure is secured.

Get to the Park Early

Arriving at the park early can make a world of difference in your overall experience. The mornings tend to be less crowded . This allows you to enjoy popular attractions with shorter wait times. Additionally, having a less crowded park can create some fantastic photo opportunities for your family!

Stay at a Disneyland Resort

Staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel offers a host of benefits. These benefits include proximity to the park entrances, early park admission, and the convenience of Disney-themed accommodations. These resorts are beautifully designed to extend the magic beyond the park, making your entire stay a part of the enchanting experience.

Get a Park Hopper Ticket

A Park Hopper ticket allows you to explore both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure on the same day. This flexibility gives you the opportunity to experience a wider range of attractions, shows, and entertainment options . This flexibility only maximizes your holiday adventure! And because the parks are so close together, you can walk from one park to the next in just a few minutes.

Pick Up Souvenirs at the End of the Day

While the temptation to pick up souvenirs throughout the day is strong, consider waiting until the end of the day to make your purchases. This gives you a chance to fully enjoy the attractions and entertainment without carrying around bags. Plus, browsing the shops at night, when the park is beautifully illuminated, adds a touch of magic to your souvenir shopping experience.

Embrace the Festive Spirit

December is all about embracing the holiday spirit, so why not join in the fun? Wear your favorite holiday attire! Consider a cozy sweater, Santa hat, or even a festive Disney-themed outfit. The more you embrace the season, the more you’ll feel like a part of the magical world around you.

What to Pack for Disneyland in December

Disneyland in December is a wonderful time to visit.

Packing for a December visit to Disneyland requires a bit of strategic planning. This ensures you’re prepared for the festive atmosphere and varying weather conditions. From cozy layers to essential items, here’s a comprehensive list of what to pack to make the most of your magical experience.

🎄 Warm Clothing Layers: December temperatures in Southern California can be quite mild during the day but can drop significantly in the evenings. Pack a mix of warm clothing layers . This could include sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, and lightweight jackets. Opt for pieces that are easy to take off and carry if the weather warms up.

🌟 Comfortable Shoes: With so much to explore, comfortable shoes are a must. Choose well-worn sneakers or walking shoes that provide ample support. Make sure to break them in before your trip to prevent any discomfort.

🎄 Rain Gear: December occasionally brings rain to the region, so it’s wise to pack a small travel umbrella or a lightweight waterproof jacket. A poncho can also come in handy and can easily be stored in your bag.

🌟 Hats and Sunglasses: Protect yourself from the sun’s rays by packing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. These not only shield your face from the sun but also add a touch of style to your outfits.

🎄 Refillable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially when you’re walking and exploring all day. Bring a refillable water bottle to ensure you have access to water throughout your visit.

🌟 Backpack or Crossbody Bag: A comfortable and spacious bag is essential for carrying your essentials. Opt for a backpack or crossbody bag that can hold your water bottle, snacks, camera, and other necessities without weighing you down.

🎄 Portable Phone Charger: With all the photos you’ll be taking and the use of the Disneyland app, your phone battery may drain quickly. A portable charger ensures you stay connected and capture every magical moment.

🌟 Sunscreen: Even in December, the California sun can be surprisingly strong. Protect your skin by packing sunscreen with a high SPF rating. Apply and reapply throughout the day to keep your skin safe.

🎄 Autograph Book and Pen: If you’re traveling with children or are a Disney character enthusiast, an autograph book and pen are essential for collecting the signatures of beloved characters.

🌟 Disney Gear: Don’t forget to bring your favorite Disney-themed apparel, accessories, or ears to fully embrace the magic of the park and enhance your photo ops.

By packing thoughtfully, you’ll be well-prepared for an enchanting Disneyland adventure in December.

TIP: Visit my Travel Resources page for my specific recommendations based on what I personally bring into the parks when we visit.

Visiting Disneyland in Winter: Pros & Cons

  • The Quick Answer: Visiting Disneyland in the winter offers unique seasonal experiences like the festive decorations and special events, fewer crowds, and potentially lower prices. However, some cons include potential closures due to inclement weather, shorter daylight hours, and the possibility of key attractions undergoing maintenance.

Table of Contents

The magic of disneyland: a winter wonderland awaits.

Ever wondered what it would be like to explore the magical kingdom also known as Disneyland wrapped in the snug embrace of winter? Well, we’re here to spill the holiday beans! Mickey’s Disneyland, decked to its ears in shimmering lights, joyous festivity, and of course its signature magic, offers a uniquely charming atmosphere during the colder months.

Breaking the Ice: Considering a Winter Visit to Disneyland

Although Disneyland is a joy no matter the season, winter presents an array of experiences unlike any other. Think twinkling lights, holiday cheer, and Mickey Mouse in adorable winter attire. However, it’s not all sugary sweet. The season also brings with it cooler weather, potential rain, and shorter daylight hours. So, before you pack your suitcases and jet off to this magical wonderland, join us on this ‘chillin’ journey as we explore the pros and cons of visiting Disneyland in winter.

Unwrapping the Magic of Winter at Disneyland

Before you write off winter as a dismal season to visit Disneyland, consider the charming possibilities. There’s something uniquely enchanting about Disneyland in winter that may make it worth your while. Between the festive attractions and off-peak perks, you might find winter to be the most magical time of year!

Festive Attractions: Unwrapping the Holiday Spirit

Disneyland during winter is not just the same-old theme park with a touch of frost. It transforms into a breathtakingly beautiful wonderland! Imagine the iconic Sleeping Beauty’s Castle adorned with twinkling lights, Main Street dusted in faux snow, and the famous “it’s a small world” ride taking on a whole holiday vibe.

Beyond that, you’ll encounter some rare and endearing sights that are exclusively a winter spectacle. Festive parades light up the park with holiday cheer, and the resort has special seasonal shows you wouldn’t want to miss. And let’s not forget the main Disney characters sporting adorable winter outfits. Catch Mickey in his cute holiday scarf and Minnie rocking her winter hat – it doesn’t get more Instagrammable than that!

Off-Peak Perks: Experience Disney without the Crowd

Winter, in the Disney world, qualifies as the off-peak season, and that comes with a sleigh-full of perks. Want to meet Cinderella without waiting in line for an hour? Or try every ride without rubbing elbows with thousands of tourists? Winter visits certainly make these dreams come true.

Bid farewell to long queues, as most rides have significantly shorter wait times. That means more fun, more rides, and more time to enjoy the Dole Whip! Bargain hunters will also appreciate the lower hotel rates typical in the off-peak season, making your Disney escapade notably lighter on your wallet.

And, let’s not forget the dining experience at Disneyland; it’s not something to gloss over. With fewer tourists about, landing a table at your favorite restaurant or securing a spot for the acclaimed Dining With Disney Princesses becomes a tad easier. So get ready to feast on those drool-worthy Mickey-shaped waffles!

Milder Winter Weather: A Cool Disney Experience

Coming from a region where winter means bone-chilling temperatures and mountains of snow? Perfect! Disneyland’s winter weather offers a milder, more comfortable alternative. Typically, you can enjoy the park’s attractions while basking in the mild Californian winter sunshine, minus the relentless summer heat. So slather on some SPF, throw on a cozy sweater, and you’re all set for a magical wintery day in the happiest place on earth!

Winter Woes: Potential Drawbacks to a Disneyland Winter Vacation

Just like in the fairy tales Disney is famous for, just as there’s a prince, there’s a villain. In the winter, the villains might be chilly weather, fewer daylight hours, and occasional ride maintenance. But don’t worry, none of these Voldemort-level villains can truly dim the magic of Disneyland… they just require a little preparation. Let’s explore these trouble-makers closer.

When Weather Throws a Wet Blanket on Your Fun

The word “California” might make you think of eternal sunshine, but even The Golden State experiences winter. Bear in mind, though, “winter” in SoCal is a bit like ordering “extra spicy” at a sub-par taco stand – not actually that hot, or in this case, cold. However, rain can occasionally join the party, potentially putting a damper (literally!) on some outdoor attractions.

If you’ve geared up to experience flagship outdoor rides, like the Grand Sierra Railroad or Splash Mountain, surprise weather disturbances can force temporary closures. Jack Frost might not be breathing down your neck, but that doesn’t mean he can’t rain on your parade.

Daylight’s Disney Dilemma

Alas, winter days, like Cinderella’s magical evening, are cut short. Earlier sunsets mean you have less daylight to aid in navigating the vast Disney universe. Disneyland does its best sun impression by lighting up like a Christmas tree after dark, but nothing can replace the natural light.

Additionally, this affects the park’s operating hours. Disneyland often opens later and closes earlier in winter, so you might not get as much time with Mickey and friends as you’d like. Bottom line? These shorter days are a bit like your favorite Disney movie, seemingly over too soon!

Beware: Winter Ride Maintenance!

Just like Sleeping Beauty needed her beauty sleep, even Disneyland’s best attractions need some time off. Winter is often chosen for ride repairs and maintenance, because the crowd is usually on the smaller side. This bummer means certain attractions might be temporarily closed.

This maintenance schedule isn’t anything personal against winter visitors. After all, like a favorite toy from Santa, a ride needs to be taken care of to stay amazing. But it’s good to check ahead of time, just in case your favorite ride is taking a winter nap.

Essential Disneyland Winter Trip Tips

Preparing for a Disneyland escapade in winter can be an adventure in itself. It’s a fascinating journey fraught with the mystery of unruly weather patterns, receding daylight, and yet, incredible seasonal celebrations. Here are some top tips to make the most of your travel!

Bundle Up To Stay Warm and Dry

Disneyland, though magical, isn’t immune to the crisp chill of winter or its occasional rainy tantrums. Layers are your friends here – start with a light, sweat-wicking material close to your body and layer up based on the weather. Consider packing rain ponchos or waterproof jackets for those spotty showers which are common in winter months. Additionally, cosy clothes can lead to Instagram-worthy shots near Sleeping Beauty’s Castle spiralling in winter fog, making you the envy of all your friends stuck in ‘boring weather’ locations.

Align Your Plans with The Shorter Daylight Hours

Winter’s shorter daylight hours can steal some sunshine from your outdoor fun, but you can outsmart Mother Nature! Begin your day early and aim towards enjoying as many outdoor attractions as possible when the daylight is on your team. Plan out indoor activities, shopping or dining experiences for evenings. Mouse-land in the twinkling winter night is nothing short of extraordinary – as if fairy dust got spread all over the place!

Make The Most of Winter Special Events

Visiting Disneyland in winter means you get to revel in their exclusive seasonal celebrations. From spell-binding Christmas decorations in November and December, to the Lunar New Year celebrations in January, winter brings a storm of limited-time shows, parades and special exhibits. Plan your itinerary around these events to get the best of the season. Be ready to see Cinderella’s castle draped in snow, Mickey Mouse sporting his cute winter gear, and maybe even snag some limited edition winter-themed merchandise!

And there you have it – the ultimate guide to making your winter visit to Disneyland magical, warm, and exceedingly enchanting!

Frosty Finale: Weighing the Pros and Cons

Now that we’ve sleighed through the icy pros and cons of a Disneyland Winter getaway, it’s time for the final act: weighing the good against not-so-good. Like a Disney movie, every experience has its ups and downs—but in the end, it’s the ride that matters, right?

Final Verdict: Is Disneyland’s Winter Wonderland Worth It?

On the merry side, Disneyland in winter brings a unique blend of festive cheer, off-peak perks, and cosy weather. You can revel in the twinkling decorations, enjoy the wonders of heart-tugging holidays parades, and make merry with your favourite characters in festive attire. Plus, shorter lines, lower hotel rates, and an abundance of dining reservations add the perfect toppings to your magical escape.

But like a sudden flurry on your parade, there are potential cold fronts to consider too—literal and figurative. Inclement weather can be frosty ride dampener, potentially leading to unexpected closures. Also, daylight restraints can shorten your thrill time outside, and there’s always a chance that your favourite ride could be in for a winter tune-up.

Parting Snow Flakes: Final Thoughts and Recommendations

As the snow settles, remember this: a winter trip to Disneyland can be every bit as magical as you’d dream—if you prepare right! Bundle up for the cold, plan for shorter days, and be sure to get your fill of those delightful winter events. Not even an unexpected drizzle can rain on your parade if you’re ready to splash in the puddles with Mickey!

Regardless of small potential hiccups, Disneyland weaves enchantment all year round, with each season bringing a unique charm of its own. Winter serves up a hearty dose of holiday magic, making it a truly special time to explore the Happiest Place on Earth!

This time of year is a blessing and a curse. Many Disneyland rides are closed for refurbishment during the first two months of the year. Check the refurbishment calendar on the official Disneyland website, released 60 days in advance, for closures.

I spent some time putting together a Disneyland attendance calendar detailing all of the different pros and cons of the different months of the year when visiting. The information included in our best time to go to Disneyland calendar is basic Disneyland crowd levels, park hours, and weather.

Be sure to check the Disneyland calendar on the official Disneyland website for more info on closures, entertainment schedules, and other info. This will help you to decide when to visit Disneyland! You can also read our thoughts on the cheapest times to go to Disneyland .

  • Disneyland is always crowded on New Year's Eve, but there are lots of special entertainment offerings including bands and the largest Disneyland fireworks celebration of the year. This fireworks show is made up of all of the fireworks shells that were not shot off during the preceding six months due to wind cancellation.
  • Be sure to read our guide  Visiting Disneyland in December to get a detailed description of what to expect, what to pack, what to wear, and what current events are planned.

Disneyland Through the Seasons

Throughout the year there are a few huge special events that make the parks extra magical! The two main holiday seasons, Halloween and Christmas, both bring special entertainment, decorations, and food to the parks. You can also find smaller themed events throughout the year. In addition to holidays, the summer months are also a popular time for guests to visit as this is when Disneyland will typically introduce new additions to the park.

Christmas in Disneyland

At Christmas time you will find Sleeping Beauty Castle lit up with icicles, Main Street laden with decorations, and the rest of the parks beautifully decorated to celebrate the season. Regular shows and experiences are altered to match the holiday theme.

The Haunted Mansion and it’s a small world each receive holiday overlays that transform both attractions. The Haunted Mansion becomes the Haunted Mansion Holiday, which is themed to the “Nightmare Before Christmas.” it's a small world becomes “it's a small world Holiday” adorned with thousands of beautiful lights and the tune of the song inside changes to Jingle Bells.

I highly recommend visiting during Christmas, but expect to be joined by lots of crowds if you are there the week of Christmas through the first week of January. The best time to visit and see the Christmas decorations is the first two weeks of December or the second week of January. You can expect to see busy weekends in December as the locals turn out in droves to see the new holiday decor.

For more information on visiting Disneyland during Christmastime, visit our sister site Disney Dose  and read my top Disneyland Christmas must-sees .

Halloween at Disneyland

During Halloween time, the parks are decorated with jack-o-lanterns and the feeling of fall and Halloween is in the air. See all of the information on Disneyland Halloween in our huge guide.

Disney turns Space Mountain into Space Mountain: Ghost Galaxy. Space ghosts are added throughout this classic indoor roller coaster and also the soundtrack is switched to one a bit spookier. The Haunted Mansion is also transformed to be themed to Nightmare Before Christmas. This Haunted Mansion conversion runs from the end of September until the beginning of January.

Oogie Boogie Bash at Disney's California Adventure

Disneyland's California Adventure has taken over hosting the coveted Halloween Party! The Oogie Boogie Bash usually takes place on select dates through September-October at Disney's California Adventure. This party will run in conjunction with the Disneyland Halloween season .

The party consists of fun entertainment, attractions, and candy, all while you wear your Halloween costume inside California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort.

Check out our full guide to Oogie Boogie Bash at California Adventure>

Disneyland in Summertime

In Summertime , Disney often opens new experiences and attractions. This is the best time to “get em while they are hot,” but be careful because that is the same mindset of every visitor and new attractions often have long lines.

The rest of the year Disney has shorter weekend events going on that celebrate certain cultures or smaller holidays like the Lunar New Year, high school graduation, or the 4th of July. In the past they have also held 24 hour days where the parks operate around the clock.

Check out our full guide to summer here.

Recommended Length of Stay

The recommended length for a trip is anything between one and a half days and three full days. Anything more than three days isn’t quite necessary. When we do a trip to Disneyland, it is usually about 2 and a half days over a weekend.

Now that you know when you want to visit Disneyland, it is time to figure out the logistics of where and how you will book your trip. The benefit of staying longer is being able to see and do everything you want at a more leisurely pace. You would also have time to return to your favorite experiences.

Two girls in rainbows waiting in line for the Mader's Junkyard Jamboree ride during their trip to Disneyland in Winter.

Are you planning a trip to Disneyland in Winter? Read this post so you can be prepared to visit the happiest place on earth during their cold season. This post applies to visits to both Disneyland and California Adventure.

The good news is, Disneyland is in Southern California. So you don’t have to worry about freezing temperatures, ice, or snow. However, you may still have to deal with some cold and rainy weather. We recently took our family of five to Disneyland in the middle of winter – during a rainstorm.

Two girls in rainbows waiting in line for the Mader's Junkyard Jamboree ride during their trip to Disneyland in Winter.

Yes, it was pouring down rain for 80% of our trip. Yes, we still had a magical time.

Here is how to prepare for a trip to Disneyland in Winter

Bring Layers! It could be warm and sunny one day and pouring down rain the next. Even the same day can be sunny and warm during the day but it still cools down at night. If you are bringing a stroller, I highly recommend packing a lightweight blanket or two in the stroller. Then you can keep warm while watching the evening shows. If you don’t have a stroller, than you may still be able to bring a small one in your backpack.

A little girl in her mom's arms next to Winne the Pooh and Tigger at Disneyland in Winter.

These Disney travel blankets on Amazon are adorable and will cost less than in the park.

The good news is, it should not get colder than about 50 degrees. If you are from a colder area than you will have no problem keeping warm even at night. Your body is probably more used to it than us Californians.

Two little girls peeking their heads out the window on the train in Disneyland during Winter.

We are from Northern California (less sunny than Southern California) and are used to mild winters. We brought coats for ourselves and packed hats + small blankets for the kids. It was perfect for night-time when our two littlest kids fell asleep in the stroller, but we were not ready to leave just yet.

What if it rains at Disneyland?

Our trip was almost completely rained out. My husband and I wore tennis shoes, so our feet did get wet at times. I highly recommend checking the weather and bringing rain gear with you on your trip to Disneyland in Winter. We packed rain boots and raincoats for each kid.

Two kids on the Carousel at Disneyland in Winter.

They love their rain gear and happily wore it most of the time. They also were not bothered by the rain, because they were kept dry for the most part. We also brought warm sweatshirts for them to wear underneath their raincoats or when it was not raining.

A little girl giving Olaf a high five during her trip to Disneyland in Winter.

If there is rain in the forecast, I do not recommend bringing an expensive camera. I always just bring my iPhone on Disneyland trips. A friend brought her DSLR, though it was protected (wrapped in plastic),  it still managed to get ruined. It is not worth it. Leave the camera at home and use your phone instead.

Heavy rain may be a good time to get inside and eat and dry off. If you can plan ahead, I recommend booking a character breakfast .

Two little girls standing next to Anna and Elsa from Frozen at California Adventure in Winter.

Make sure you have a good weather app on your phone so you can plan on running out to get in-line for the outdoor rides as soon as it clears up. The thing about California rain, is it very rarely rains non-stop for the entire day. You will get breaks from the weather and need to take adventage of them.

A little girl riding the Dumbo ride at Disneyland in Winter.

How to protect a stroller in the rain at Disneyland?

We didn’t make it go right to buy the rain cover for our City Select Double before our trip to Disney. However, I did make it go right to stop at Dollar Tree before our trip and pick up a shower curtain. It worked better than expected! We just tied the corners around the edges of the stroller seats and untied them as needed.

Three kids riding on a City Select Double stroller (with glider board) during a trip to Disneyland in Winter.

The kids stayed dry (even our oldest sat under it on the glider board from time to time) and so did our stuff underneath in the canopy. I was worried about airflow at first but I quickly realized it wasn’t an issue and was actually great at muffling the noise and encouraging a nap out of our two-year-old.

The Pros and Cons of visiting Disneyland in Winter

The top pro of visiting Disneyland in the Winter is when it rains, the lines are much shorter! Many people leave (or don’t come at all) if it’s raining so we were able to get on many rides with little to no wait time. Many of the lines are set up with some time of shade cover, so even if we had to wait in line, we were mostly protected from the rain.

The weather (if not raining) is actually quite nice. You are looking at 60s and sometimes 70s in the Winter in Anaheim. This can be a welcomed change from visiting in Summer when it’s 100+ degrees. You don’t have to worry quite as much about sunburns or getting dehydrated and it’s just more comfortable.

A boy and girl riding Mader's Junkyard Jamboree in California Adventure during Winter.

The con of visiting Disneyland in Winter is the possibility of rain. Your shoes and socks may be wet by the end of the day. There are a few rides that cannot run in the rain – like Radiator Springs Racers – boo. With a very avid Cars fan in our family, this was a little disappointing for them.

Luckily, they can usually get the ride up and running again if the rain clears up for 30 minutes or so. The operators of the ride just need time to run the cars through and get excess water off.

A man and his two children walking through Disneyland in the rain.

All in all, we had a wonderfully magical time during our trip to Disneyland in Winter. Yes, it rained, and it wasn’t super sunny and warm. But we had a lot of fun and made so many memories as a family.  The kids could have cared less about the rain and we (the grownups) just had to decide to have a good attitude. Here we are enjoying our last day in the parks (the sun came out) and watching our kids play on the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail .

Now that I have shared all about our trip to Disneyland in Winter, I’m off to start fantasizing about our next trip. 😉 What is your favorite time of year to visit Disneyland? Tell me in the comments below!

Best Time to Visit Disneyland Resort (2024)

Planning a Disneyland trip can be challenging, especially if you want to avoid crowds. In this guide, we’ll show you the best time to visit Disneyland and Disney California Adventure so that you can enjoy seasonal events, pleasant weather, and reasonable pricing without worrying about long lines and large crowds. We will also advise you on the busiest and least favorable weeks and months to visit. By following our tips, you can choose the best dates that suit your preferences and make the most of your Disneyland vacation.

Factors to Consider Before Selecting Your Dates

Best time to visit Disneyland: A boat sails into the entrance of "it's a small world" at Disneyland on early evening in February

The best time to visit Disneyland depends on your preferences and what you hope to get out of your trip. Here are some factors to consider:

Crowds: Crowd levels can have a major impact on your overall experience at Disneyland. Long lines can ruin the trip for some people, so is critical to know when the theme parks are less crowded. Check our Disneyland crowd calendar before you decide when to go. Mid-week days are usually less crowded than weekends and some times of year are significantly better than others.

Weather: Southern California weather is generally pleasant, but rain and extreme heat can negatively impact your experience.

Events & Festivals: Disneyland’s seasonal events offer unique experiences but also attract larger crowds. Decide whether you want to attend these special events or visit during non-event days to avoid the crowds.

Availability & Costs: During peak times, tickets and lodging are limited. Disneyland uses dynamic pricing – rates climb for tickets and hotels during busy holidays and events. Special events often require separate ticket purchases. While off-peak visits may mean lower prices, you may miss out on seasonal offerings.

Top 3 Best Times to Visit Disneyland Resort

If you’re looking for a balance between low crowd levels and favorable weather, cost, and events, these are the three best times to visit Disneyland.

1. Mid-September to Mid-November

Additional decorations are added outside of Haunted Mansion in a Nightmare before Christmas overlay

Additional decorations are added outside of Haunted Mansion

Fall brings Halloween magic to Disneyland Resort with special events, mild weather, and noticeably lighter weekday crowds. From late September through October 31st, the parks transform with pumpkin décor, themed parades, costume meet-and-greets, and a Nightmare Before Christmas Haunted Mansion overlay.

  • Unique Halloween-themed attractions and experiences.
  • Relatively fewer crowds than in peak seasons, especially during weekdays.
  • Wider availability of dining reservations and Genie+ options.
  • Dry and pleasant weather, with temperatures in the 70s or 80s.
  • Weekends around Halloween tend to be more crowded.
  • Some attractions may close early or briefly for refurbishments.
  • Evening weather can be cooler, with lows in the 50s. Wear layers.

2. Mid-January to Mid-March

The excitement of the holidays has passed, leaving behind a quieter ambiance. Cool temperatures in the 60s to low 70s make for pleasant park exploring. Sparse crowds provide a relaxed pace.

  • Dramatically fewer guests and shorter wait times. On weekdays, lines may be walk-ons.
  • More relaxed atmosphere, ideal for leisurely exploration.
  • Low crowds provide more opportunities for character interactions.
  • Winter-themed foods like soups, hot chocolate, and baked goods.
  • Lower hotel rates than peak periods.
  • Some attractions may undergo refurbishment after the holidays.
  • Shorter park hours due to earlier sunsets. Typical hours are 9 am to 8 pm.
  • Weather can be rainy in January and February. Bring rain gear.

Being from Boston, my wife Jaimie and I always look for a warmer place to vacation around January or February. The cold winters back home drive us to find places that offer both entertainment and respite from the chilly winds. Several years ago, we decided to try Disneyland in early February, and it turned out to be one of our best vacation decisions!

3. Weekdays in Winter and Spring

Love is in bloom at Disneyland

The park is invigorating in the crisp air and clear skies of winter and spring mornings. As the day goes on, the park becomes more crowded, but there is still a relaxed atmosphere as the schools are in session during the mid-week.

  • Significantly reduced crowds compared to weekends. Short to non-existent lines.
  • More opportunities for spontaneous decisions and alterations in plans.
  • Lower crowds allow time to notice subtle details in the theming and take photos.
  • Pleasant weather with highs in the 60s and 70s.
  • Some seasonal shows and parades might only be held on weekends, not weekdays.
  • There is a higher chance of rain from November to April.

Disneyland is particularly magical during the holidays, especially leading up to Christmas, with festive activities such as carolers, themed decorations, and a variety of holiday treats. However, this enchantment comes at the price of large crowds. This is also true during Thanksgiving and Easter weeks. If you don’t like crowds, it’s best to avoid holiday weeks and any time when schools are out of session.

Here’s a tip if you decide to go : Book your theme park reservations months in advance. On the day of your visit, arrive early to avoid the crowds, use Genie+ and Lightning Lane passes to your advantage, but manage your expectations because you will still have to wait in long lines.

2. Summer: June to Mid-August

Summer is the most lively time to visit Disneyland. The park has extended hours and a full schedule of activities. However, the combination of hot summer days – which can reach temperatures of 90 degrees Fahrenheit – and large crowds can lead to long queues and exhaustion. It is important to keep in mind that the summer season also brings higher ticket and accommodation prices. Of course, there are also some benefits, such as being able to add on some fun in the sun at one of the beaches near Disneyland .

3. Other Significant Holidays & Extended Weekends

Major national holidays like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day always draw huge crowds to Disneyland Resort. The parks often have special parades and entertainment to celebrate these holidays, further driving up attendance. It can be quite busy throughout the entire long weekend and even into the weekdays following the holiday.

To make the most of your day, arrive early, take a break during the afternoon (during peak crowds), and then stay until closing time.

Dates to Avoid Disneyland in 2024

To avoid long waits and crowds, avoid planning your Disneyland trip during these peak dates:

  • January : 1-7, 10-15
  • February : 16-19
  • March : 9 – April 30
  • May : All weekends, Grad Nite dates, Memorial Day
  • June : 14 – July 7
  • August : 30 – September 2
  • October : 2-20
  • November : 22-30
  • December : 21-31

By steering clear of these periods, you’re better positioned for a more relaxed Disneyland experience.

FAQs: Disneyland Crowd Levels and Timing

Q: what are the best months and seasons to visit disneyland.

Our top recommendations for optimal Disneyland experiences are September, October, and mid-January through March . These months strike a balance between pleasant weather and manageable crowds. In particular, September and October offer the warmth of summer without its peak visitor numbers. Meanwhile, the months after the holidays, until March, promise a cooler atmosphere with fewer guests.

Q: What are the least crowded days of the week at Disneyland?

A: Weekdays, especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays, tend to be less crowded than weekends at Disneyland. Visiting on a Tuesday or Wednesday will likely mean shorter lines and wait times.

Q: What’s the best time of day to avoid crowds?

A: The morning right at the park open typically has the lowest crowds. Arrive early to experience short lines before crowds build later.

Q: When is the slowest season for crowds?

A: The slowest season is generally January through March, after the holidays. September and early November also see lower attendance before Thanksgiving picks up.

Q: What if I can only visit during a peak crowded season?

A: Navigating peak seasons can be easier with the right strategy:

  • Disney Genie : Use this tool to streamline your visit.
  • Early Entry : If you’re staying at one of the Disneyland hotels, capitalize on this perk offering extra time at one of the two parks.
  • Arrival Time : Aim to be at the park 60 minutes prior to its opening. This lets you clear security before the rush.
  • Morning Plan : Identify and visit your top attractions right as the park opens.
  • Genie+/Lightning Lanes : To avoid longer lines, use these premium options in the afternoon and evening.
  • Late-Night Strategy : Stick around until the park closes, as ride lines often decrease later at night.

With careful planning, even the busiest days can be filled with magic!.

Q: When is the cheapest time to visit Disneyland?

A: The cheapest time of year to visit Disneyland is typically early January through early March . Hotel rates (including Disneyland hotels) are at their lowest following the holiday season. You can also find discounted park tickets and cheaper airfare during these months.

Q: What is the hottest month at Disneyland?

A: July and August are usually the hottest, with average highs around 85°F. For milder weather, plan a trip in spring or fall, when temperatures reach the 70s.

Q: When is the best time to visit Disneyland if I want to avoid the rain?

A: The wettest time of year in Anaheim is January and February, with Disneyland experiencing an average of five rainy days. To avoid rain, plan your visit in summer or early fall.

Disneyland in January: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

visit disneyland during winter

The month of January is an excellent time to visit Disneyland if you don't like big crowds (as long as you avoid New Year's Day). If you go through the first week or two of the month, you enjoy the holiday decorations and entertainment.

On the downside, park hours will be shorter than during busier times of the year. But the shorter hours are offset by shorter lines, allowing to you get in just as many rides as you can in the summer. Fireworks and parades are limited and mostly on weekends, and some rides will be closed for renovation.

It also might rain. If that happens, the park will still be open, but lots of people stay away. In fact, some people say they like to go on a rainy day because so few people are there.

To decide whether January is when you want to visit, read what's below, and also weigh the pros and cons of visiting Disneyland in winter .

Crowds at Disneyland in January

January 1 is one of the few days a year when Disneyland can get so crowded that it reaches capacity. When that happens, they have to obey the city fire code and can't let any more people in, whether they have a ticket or not.

After the first week of January, school holidays end. In general, the rest of the month is relatively uncrowded. For day-by-day crowd predictions, use the  crowd forecast calendar at isitpacked.com . Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (third Monday of January) may draw slightly more visitors.

Disneyland Weather in January

The averages below can help you get a rough idea of Disneyland's January weather. But beware: California weather is unpredictable. No matter what the averages say, the worst rain all winter could fall on your Disneyland day, or it could be so warm you'll wish you packed your shorts.

January can be one of Anaheim's rainiest months in general. During a winter storm, rainfall can be best described as a downpour. Disneyland never closes because of it, but rides with outdoor tracks may close when it's raining. Others may close when it's windy.

At the extremes, Anaheim's record low temperature was 30 F (-1 C).

  • Average High Temperature:  66 F (19 C)
  • Average Low Temperature:  48 F (9 C)
  • Rain:  2 in (5 cm)

After being decorated to the max for the holidays, Haunted Mansion and It's a small world close the second week of January to take it all down, and they may remain closed into February.

The less-busy season in terms of visitors is the busy time for the Disneyland maintenance team with major closures happening this time of year.  Check touringplans.com for a list of rides that are expected to be closed for refurbishment .

Disneyland's hours are generally shorter when the days are shorter. That changes for the holidays, and the parks will be open longer through the first weekend of the month. After that, here's the regular schedule in January.

  • Monday through Thursday:  Both parks are open about 10 hours a day. Parades may run only once, and night parades (World of Color, Fantasmic!, and the Disneyland fireworks) may not happen at all.
  • Friday through Sunday:  Parks will be open between 11 and 16 hours. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (third Monday) will have weekend hours.

California Adventure hours are often shorter than Disneyland's.  Check January hours up to 6 weeks in advance .

What to Pack

California weather is highly variable in January. In some years, it rains a lot. In others, barely a drop falls. That makes advance plans for packing difficult. The only way to know for sure what will happen during your trip is to check the forecast a few days ahead of time.

Take a poncho or hooded rain jacket if rain is forecasted. Leave your umbrellas somewhere else, though. It's hard to move around a theme park while carrying one, and they're a nuisance to stow every time you want to go on a ride.

If you want to go on the rides that get you wet ( Splash Mountain or Grizzly River Run ), pack clothing that will dry out quickly afterward. And take a lightweight plastic poncho, which will also help keep you dry while on the ride. A change of socks may also be welcome if your feet get wet.

Packing experts suggest creating a capsule wardrobe for travel. You can find suggestions for the number of tops, bottoms, layers, and shoes you need at Classy Yet Trendy . For Disneyland in January, pack mid-length to long-sleeved sleeved tops and full-length bottoms.

Going to Disneyland requires more stuff than you might imagine. Before you start packing,  check the tested and proven tips in the girls' guide to packing for Disneyland .

January Events at Disneyland

During the slow time of the year, few events are scheduled. A small celebration is held in early January for Día de Los Reyes (Three Kings Day).

The Lunar New Year begins when the sun and moon begin their journey together for another year. In honor of that, California Adventure park puts on a celebration, when you can enjoy Mulan’s Procession and other Asian-themed performances. You may find Disney characters in seasonal costumes, and the kids can participate in free arts and crafts activities. And even if it’s not the Year of the Pig, you can pig out on Asian-themed food with an unmistakable Disney twist. It usually starts toward the end of January, but you can check this year’s calendar for the schedule .

January Travel Tips

  • If you decide to go to Disneyland on January 1, be prepared for the park to stop letting visitors in when it reaches maximum capacity. New Year's Day is not a time for park hopping—pick one park, get there as early as possible, and stay there until you're ready to go home.
  • Disneyland sometimes offers promotional deals in January, selling adult tickets for the kids' price or Park Hoppers at the cost of a one-park ticket.  Check their website for details and dates .
  • When Disneyland is less busy, hotel rates drop. It's the old story of supply and demand. That makes January a good time to save money on your lodging.
  • Toward the end of January, the NAMM show takes place at the Anaheim Convention Center. It's the year's biggest convention, filling hotels and raising their rates.  Get this year's dates for the show if you want to avoid it .
  • If you are a collector and want to grab some of the limited time Lunar New Year merchandise, get there early on the first day of the celebration. Ask any cast member where the Lunar New Year merchandise stands are located and go there fast before the best stuff sells out.
  • During the Lunar New Year celebration at California Adventure, kids can get their faces painted for free. Make that one of your first stops so you can get maximum enjoyment from it.
  • If you want to sample the Asian foods at the Lunar New Year celebration, start by looking at the menus and decide how many you want to check out. If you're going to eat enough of them, consider getting a Sip and Savor pass to save money.
  • January temperatures can be cool to chilly, especially after the sun goes down. Go during the warmest part of the day to avoid an unpleasant chill. Put a pair of socks and a cheap plastic poncho in your bag to repel water and get your feet dry right away. If you take a full change of clothing, don't lug it around all day. Instead, rent a locker when you arrive and stow it there.

Visiting Disneyland Paris in Winter

Are you thinking about visiting Disneyland Paris in Winter? Winter in Disneyland Paris is one of my favorite times to visit the parks due to theming and crowds (though this varies by month). In this guide we will tell you what to expect from weather in Winter, as well as some tips for enjoy the parks in Winter.

Is Disneyland Paris Open in Winter?

Disneyland Paris in Winter

So first things first – is Disneyland Paris open in Winter? Yes it absolutely is. Disneyland Paris is in fact open every day of the year including Christmas Day. So the next thing we need to ask is …

When is Winter in Disneyland Paris?

Winter in Disneyland Paris, or in France generally is classified as December, January and February.

However for the sake of this post I will also be talking about Disneyland Paris in November . The reason for this is that the Christmas season in Disneyland Paris starts in mid November and therefore has to be considered as Winter in the parks.

What are the Disneyland Paris Opening Hours in Winter?

As Disneyland Paris is in Europe, which operates Daylight Savings Time you will find that the park operating hours chance seasonally. For instance Disneyland Paris in August has much longer operational hours than Disneyland Paris in January.

The usual opening hours in Winter at Disneyland Paris are:

  • Weekdays  Disneyland Park  10.00 till 19.00,  Walt Disney Studios Park  10.00 till 18.00
  • Weekend  Disneyland Park  10.00 till 22.00,  Walt Disney Studios Park  10.00 till 20.00

With Early Magic Hours being around 8:30 – 9:30.

Note: be sure to check your dates of travel on the Disneyland Paris app before you travel to be sure of the opening hours for your time of travel.

It is also worth noting that during the Christmas week and Christmas holidays, and February half term the hours are likely to be slightly longer than during non holiday periods.

Are the rides open during Disneyland Paris in Winter?

Whether the rides are open during Winter in Disneyland Paris will depend on

  • what winter month you are visiting in and
  • the schedule for refurbishment.

Usually Disneyland Paris does not close rides for short term refurbishments over peak season i.e. Christmas season. However if there are longer term refurbishment i.e. It’s a Small World was closed for much of 2022 then there is nothing you can do.

Having said that it is worth noting that the month in Winter will greatly affect what temporary and short term refurbishments are ongoing.

While they won’t normally schedule short term refurbishments for November and December when the Enchanted Christmas Season is on, you will find that January and early February will have more ride closures for temporary refurbishments than any other month.

The reason for this is because this isn’t considered peak season and will have less of an operational impact during these times.

Disneyland Paris in Winter Weather?

Is it cold at disneyland paris in winter.

What to Wear in Disneyland Paris in February

Perhaps the biggest concern for those visiting Disneyland Paris in Winter is the weather. Now I am not going to lie, the weather in Disneyland Paris in Winter tends to be cold – very cold but is very much like the weather we get in the UK in Winter.

The coldest month in Winter at Disneyland Paris is January where the average temperature tends to hover around 5°C (41°F) and November being the warmest of the Winter weather months.

Does it rain at Disneyland Paris in Winter?

The truth is that no matter the season you plan to visit Disneyland Paris, you are likely to experience some rain. Of the Winter Months at Disneyland Paris the rainiest months tend to be December and January.

However having said that I would prepare for rain no matter the winter month you visit.

For more information on  visiting Disneyland Paris in the rain tips  check out this post.

Does it snow at Disneyland Paris in Winter?

We are often asked if it snows at Disneyland Paris in Winter, especially if you are traveling during the Winter festive season also known as Disney’s Enchanted Christmas.

However the truth is snow in Paris is actually quite rare! Of all the months in Winter, January is the most likely to get snow but you really can never guarantee snow.

However having said this, if you do want to see some snow be sure to stand on Main Street during the Christmas parade as you may get a snowy surprise.

Visiting Disneyland Paris in Winter Tips

In this section of the guide we will offer you advise in terms of crowds, events and theming to help you understand the best time for you to visit Disneyland Pas in Winter.

Crowds at Disneyland Paris in Winter?

Is Disneyland Paris crowded in November? Disneyland Paris Crowd Calendar, Is Disneyland Paris crowded in January?

Is Disneyland Paris crowded in November? Disneyland Paris Crowd Calendar, Is Disneyland Paris crowded in January?

Disneyland Paris is always crowded to an extent – it is Disney after all. However the crowds in Winter really do fluctuate from some of the quietest times to some of the most busy.

For instance Disneyland Paris in January is one of the quietest months, but Disneyland Paris in December especially around Christmas Day is actually some of the busiest times to visit.

On top of this there are some public holidays at this time which causes the crowds to swell.

Some of the busiest days at Disneyland Paris in Winter are:

  • 1st November – All Saints’ Day or La Toussaint in French.
  • 11th November – Armistice Day or Jour d’armistice in French
  • end of December from 20th December to c.8th January when Christmas decorations go down.
  • January 1st, New Years Day or Jour De l’an as the French call it is a public holiday in France as it is in the UK.

What to Wear to Disneyland Paris In Winter

best things to do at Disneyland PAris when pregnant

In my opinion the key to enjoying Disneyland Paris in Winter is packing correctly.

The key to any Disneyland Paris Winter Packing is layers, layers and even more layers. Although the temperatures in Winter may not sound much colder than the UK and Northern USA, it is amazing how cold you an get while you are standing in ride queues, waiting for parades and watching the fireworks and illuminations.

On top of layers I would also advise you to have some waterproof clothes and certainly some shoes that are either waterproof or rain resistant for those rainy days.

Also we always advise people bring costumes from home when traveling to Disneyland Paris with toddlers and young children. That is because the costumes in the park are more expensive than you would find back home in Supermarkets and online at retailers such as Amazon.

For info on supermarkets near Disneyland Paris check out this post.

If your little one is planning on wearing a costume however we advise packing thermals to go underneath them and choosing costumes such as Elsa’s travel outfit as it is one of the easier princess costumes to layer.

Are there any special seasons in Disneyland Paris in Winter?

Christmas at Disneyland Paris / visiting Disneyland Paris in December

Christmas at Disneyland Paris / visiting Disneyland Paris in December

Yes there is indeed a special season at Disneyland Paris for part of Winter. This is called Disney’s Enchanted Christmas. During this period the park will be decorated with fantastic Christmas decorations, have special Festive snacks, characters in festive attire and of course an opportunity to meet Santa at Disneyland Paris.

This year Disney’s Enchanted Christmas runs from November 11, 2023 until January 7, 2024.

Crowds will usually be highest in Winter during this season.

Are there any special events in Disneyland Paris in Winter?

On top of special seasons where there are special decorations and character outfits, Disneyland Paris also runs special events, often as an after hours party.

There is only one such event during Winter which is the New Years Eve party. This requires additional party tickets but with them you will get access to the park until 2am.

As a result the combination of day ticket passes and party ticket holders can cause the crowds to swell in the afternoon of New Years Eve in particular.

One of my favourite things about visiting in Winter, outside of Enchanted Christmas season is the smaller crowds particular. We like to use Winter in the parks, particular in January and February to get lots of rides done with minimal queues without the needs for purchasing Premier Access at an additional fee!

Get in the Christmas Spirit

Christmas starts early in Disneyland Paris. In 2022 the Christmas season starts on 1November 11, 2023 until January 7, 2024. So be sure to get into the Christmas spirit by indulging in some Christmas foods at Disneyland Paris (I love waffles and the hot chocolate that will warm you up on a really cold day), see the shows and the choirs, and enjoy the beautiful decorations.

Do Character Dining

On top of the seasonal treats it is worth trying to get in to one of the character dining experiences such as the Princess Dining at Auberge . It can be hard to persuade little ones to come away from rides but when it is cold it is nice to retreat into character dining to warm up during the day and Auberge in particular is a great way to meet Disneyland Paris princesses without the queues.

Note: be sure to c heck out our questions to ask Disney Princesses.

Meet Characters in seasonal dress

Disneyland Paris Christmas Day / Visiting Disneyland Paris is December – Disneyland Paris at Christmas

We love the parades at Disney at any time of year but my favourite parade is always Christmas. I love that Mickey is joined by the big man Santa himself on this parade.

Top Tip: be sure to stand on Main Street for at least one parade as you may get a snowy surprise.

See Surprise Mickey

Surprise Mickey is an outdoor show in the Walt Disney Studio Park. It is a great chance to see the main characters with a festive twist.

Watch the Let’s Sing Christmas Show

Held at Videopolis in the Disneyland Park Tomorrowland area, this show is on every weekend featuring different visiting choirs as well as performances by Mickey, Minnie and Friends. It is also a great way to get the kids to stop for food while still being entertained and not losing any precious time in the park.

Buy Disneyland Paris Christmas Ornaments

Whenever we travel we buy a Christmas ornament as we love having a  travel themed Christmas tree  and Disney is a great place to pick up a Christmas Ornament or Disneyland Paris Souvenir .

Enjoy the Christmas Market

Seasonal Vegan Food at Disneyland Paris

Seasonal Vegan Food at Disneyland Paris

While the Disney village is a great spot to grab some food and do some shopping whatever time of year you visit Disneyland Paris, it is especially good at Christmas as there is a small Christmas market where you can pick up festive fare and gifts.

There is also a Christmas market near the Ratatouille Ride in the Walt Disney Studios which is also great if you are traveling to Disneyland Paris as a vegan .

Meet Santa (selected Months)

Meet and Greets at Disney are fabulous at anytime but in Winter at Disneyland Paris during the Enchanted Christmas Season you get an extra special guest in Santa himself. Be sure not to miss it.

Note: santa returns to the North Pole from Christmas Day so you will be unable to see him after Christmas Day.

10 Tips for Visiting Disney World in Winter

October 2, 2021 //  by  Brandi Lyons //   1 Comment

If you are planning to visit Disney in winter, you’ve come to the right place! Going during December, January, and February are completely different than any other time of year at Disney World, and we are here to help you plan the perfect winter Disney trip.

The crowds are smaller, the air is cooler, and the parks are decorated so beautifully in winter so it’s a great time to go. But what to do while you’re there? And how do you pack for Florida in winter? We’re here to help you answer those questions and so many more, so let’s get on to the tips!

What to Wear for Disney in Winter

Since Florida weather can vary a lot in winter, it’s best to be prepared for some hot days and even a cold snap or two. We love dressing in layers for Florida winters, and we have found some adorable Disney clothing to wear next time you visit Disney in the “colder” months.

Minnie Mouse All-Over Print Leggings

In cooler months, leggings may be one of the most comfortable things you can wear in the parks. They are stretchy, cozy, and not as hot to wear as jeans or sweatpants. And these leggings with a large, all-over Minnie Mouse print for women are too cute to pass up! You can throw on a t-shirt or sweatshirt with these leggings, and you’ll be comfortable and warm enough all day long in the park!

Mickey Mouse Classic Sweatshirt

If you’re looking for the perfect sweatshirt to throw over an outfit on a cool morning, or when it starts to get cold at night, this sweatshirt is it. A small Mickey Mouse is printed on the front, and it’s got just a classic, clean style. This would be great for men or women, and you could even match your group that you’re traveling with! It even comes in several colors, making this a great choice to wear for Florida winters.

If your Disney trip is planned during December, why not get a little festive and wear this Mickey and Minnie Christmas t-shirt ? This adorable shirt has Mickey and Minnie dressed in their holiday best, surrounded by trees, wreaths, and holiday decor – and all of it is shaped like Mickey’s head. This shirt comes in sizes for men, women, and children, making it another great choice for families to wear!

Best Tips for Visiting Disney in Winter

After multiple trips during the winter months of December, January, and February, we’ve done all of the special events, tried the food, and seen the decorations. Thanks to that, we’ve compiled our list of the 10 best tips for visiting Disney in winter, and we think these will set you up to have a great winter Disney World trip!

Dress in Layers

Mornings may start off cold during the winter months in Florida, but it could get to almost 80 degrees by mid-afternoon. Throwing on a cardigan or sweatshirt in the morning over your t-shirt will help keep you warm when you need it, and you can always toss it around your waist or into a backpack once it warms up. You may need it again when the sun sets because the nights get pretty cold too!

It Can Get Cold!

Even though it’s Florida, it can get colder than most people think! The average high during the winter months is in the high 60’sF and low 70’sF, but nights, mornings, and even some days can get as low as 40F! This being said, you will never need a heavy winter coat, snow boots, or gloves while visiting Florida during the winter, and it will most likely be warmer than where you are visiting from!

You Can Still Go Swimming

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pack your bathing suit when visiting Disney. For one reason, it can still get quite warm. You may have 80F days where you’ll want to hop in the pool and relax. The other reason is because most Disney World resorts heat their pools! If you’re staying on site at a Disney resort, then the pools will be heated to around 80F, and you can certainly enjoy the pools year-round.

If you’re looking for the best pools at Disney, we certainly have our favorites – and you don’t want to miss them!

Be Prepared for Crowds in December

The winter months are notoriously less crowded than other times of the year at Disney World, but December is the exception. Christmas and holiday celebrations bring the crowds to Disney World, with many families choosing to celebrate at the parks. All 4 of the parks have special decorations, food, and offerings for the holidays, so while they’re fun to see and take part in, be aware that the crowds will be a little heavier the entire month of December leading up to New Year’s.

Tips for Visiting in January

If you plan on visiting during January, there are a few things to consider. One, January is the coldest of the winter months in Florida. If your trip is in January, then you will probably need a lightweight coat, pants, and cardigans or sweatshirts.

Also, be aware that the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend can get very busy. Unlike most of January, this weekend will see high crowd levels. This is because any time locals are off for three-day weekends and the kids are out of school for a holiday, crowds pick up at Disney World. If possible, try picking another week in January.

Hours May Vary

Based off what month you’re visiting, Disney World may have very different operating hours. December will have longer hours to accommodate the crowds, and to allow more guests to take part in the holiday festivities. January and February will have shorter hours on most days since the crowd levels are lower and Disney doesn’t need the longer days.

Also, be aware that during January and February a lot of popular rides do go down for seasonal refurbishment. Most water rides, like Kali River Rapids, go down for cleaning and refurbishment this time of year. Disney World will also close one of their two water parks in order to do massive cleanings and refurbishments as well.

Festival of the Arts

If you’re planning a trip to Disney in winter for January or February, then you will get to experience the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts . This is an amazing festival, and is seriously underrated. The food is delicious, fun, and innovative, as well as you have the opportunity to take home awesome art created by both Disney and local artists.

This festival is absolutely worth the trip, and although it isn’t as large as the other EPCOT festivals, that doesn’t mean it should be skipped. If you visit during January or February, make sure you spend at least one day at the festival watching the artists, enjoying the food, and the relaxed festival atmosphere.

Try the Seasonal Offerings

If visiting during the winter months, make sure you try the seasonal and winter offerings for food and drink. During December all 4 parks will have food and drinks for the holidays, especially at the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays – do the cookie stroll and try the holiday booths!

There will be lots of new and limited food and drink offerings during the winter months, and some will be tied to holidays and some to the festivals. You’ll find lots of cookies, gingerbread flavored items, and peppermint flavored items – all the classic winter flavors. Don’t miss out on any of these, as you may not ever get the chance to try them again.

Catch the Characters in Winter Outifts

During the winter months, the characters will also be decked out in winter garb just like the parks. Mickey Mouse and the rest of the Fab 5 (Santa Goofy, anyone?) tend to be dressed in holiday outfits, and the princesses will be in their winter dresses as well. Take advantage of cavalcades, parades, and character meet-and-greets in order to catch everyone in their cute and cozy winter gear!

The princesses are extra beautiful during winter, and we think you can’t miss them! Belle’s velvet holiday dress is stunning, and Elsa and Anna are equally as gorgeous in their sparkly winter dresses.

Make Time to Visit the Resorts

When it comes to winter and holiday decor at Disney World, it isn’t kept to just the 4 parks. All of the Disney World Resort hotels decorate for the holidays and you don’t want to miss them.

The gingerbread houses are probably the most popular resort decorations during the winter season at Disney, and you’ll actually be able to find gingerbread houses, carousels, towns, and lots of gingerbread to eat! Typically the Grand Floridian has the largest and most ornate display, and Disney’s Beach Club Resort, Disney’s Boardwalk Resort, Disney’s Contemporary Resort, and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge also put on gingerbread displays that also need to be seen.

If gingerbread isn’t your thing and you’re more of a Christmas tree lover, then you’re in luck! Many of the resorts have over the top Christmas trees, with the Contemporary and Wilderness Lodge having some of the tallest trees at Disney World. Each tree is themed to the resort it’s in, and these are absolutely stunning!

There’s lots to see at the resorts during the holidays and winter, and we have some other favorites you don’t want to miss!

Going to Disney in winter is one of our favorite times to go, and we think you’ll feel the same way after visiting. We hope that after reading our tips you are ready to plan your next trip to Disney in winter now, and you feel prepared to see, eat, and do all the seasonal things they offer! Don’t miss out on the festivals, the decorations, and all the seasonal food and drinks.

So make sure you check that weather forecast before you go, be prepared for cool nights and warm days, and don’t leave your bathing suit at home! Have you been to Disney World during the winter months before? Or are you eager to go now? Let us know in the comments!
