Nothing sours a trip like having your belongings stolen by a pickpocket. But chances are, if you travel frequently—or just happen to be unlucky—a sticky-fingered stranger will one day secretly separate you from your stuff. Since traveling sans cash, credit cards, and other valuables isn’t an option for most of us, I’ve rounded up a passel of pickpocket-proof clothing and accessories that’ll make you less of a target for thieves.

Protect Yourself with Pickpocket-Proof Clothing

While no one can guarantee that these garments are 100 percent “pickpocket-proof,” they will make it a whole lot harder for opportunistic thieves to swipe your stuff.

Pierron & Co.’s Infinity Scarf

travel pants pickpocket proof

When you’re in flight, don’t be the person who gets up to use the bathroom and carelessly leaves their passport and money behind in the seat. Instead, tuck your valuables into the large zippered pocket in Pierron & Co’s infinity scarf . Then wrap it around your neck and hit the aisle with style and your stuff securely in tow. Buyers praise not only the fully concealed zipper but also the quality and drape of the knit fabric, which makes this pickpocket-proof clothing a particularly worthy purchase.

Clothing Arts’ Pickpocket-Proof Business Travel Shirt

travel pants pickpocket proof

I’ve seen casual men’s tops with concealed pockets, but work shirts? Not so much. So I was particularly impressed with Clothing Arts’ Pickpocket-Proof Business Travel Shirt , which has an inner zip pocket—suitable for flat items such as an ID, credit cards, and cash—hidden behind the breast pocket. A tailored but not tight fit makes it easy to wear tucked or untucked. Collar stays keep it looking sharp, and the cotton-polyester blend fabric is wrinkle-resistant and dries quickly.

SCOTTeVEST’s Boxer Briefs

travel pants pickpocket proof

Whether they’re hitting the road or just the gym, men will appreciate SCOTTeVEST’s boxer briefs , which have pockets to hold valuables close. Made of sweat-wicking, odor-resistant, and synthetic-blend fabric with a non-constrictive fit, the shorts have an exterior front pocket for a phone, cash, or credit cards. On the opposite side is a concealed interior one that’s large enough to comfortably hold a passport.

Clothing Arts’ Travel Wrap Skirt

travel pants pickpocket proof

Admittedly, Clothing Arts’ travel wrap skirt isn’t the prettiest skirt I’ve ever seen, but what you lose in style you’ll gain in utility. With an impressive five zippered pockets (three on the side, two in the back) for secreting your stuff, this pickpocket-proof clothing has a flat-front, knee-length design that’s universally flattering, and the man-made fabric is quick-drying and water-repellent, with SPF 50 protection. Available in khaki, navy, and black, it’s a way smarter alternative to cargo shorts.

SCOTTeVEST’s TEC Hat

travel pants pickpocket proof

A baseball cap is pretty much the last place a pickpocket is going to try to target, which makes SCOTTeVEST’s TEC Hat all the more ingenious. From the outside the topper looks like any other, but there’s a key pocket under the brim and a side pocket with a concealed zipper for cash or a credit card. Mesh lining makes this pickpocket-proof clothing cool to wear even in steamy temps. The strap adjusts to fit most, and the cap is available in black and gray, with or without the company logo.

Lululemon’s Stash ‘n’ Run Bra

travel pants pickpocket proof

When you’re running in a new environment, you want to be focused on your surroundings, not worrying about the safety of your stuff. Lululemon’s Stash ‘n’ Run bra alleviates women’s angst with two front pockets for unobtrusively storing a room key, ID, cash, and credit cards. Made of stretchy, sweat-wicking fabric and offering medium support, it also fits the bill for other workouts. Bonus: The rear straps look cute under open-back tops.

Aday’s Throw It Higher Leggings

travel pants pickpocket proof

Travelers who don’t want to sacrifice style for security should consider Aday’s Throw It Higher Leggings . Full length and high-waisted with a firm fit, they have small zip pockets in the front, plus a hip pocket that’s large enough for a cell phone and high enough that it’s concealed under tunic-length tops. Sweat-wicking, pill-resistant technical fabric makes the leggings suitable for workouts, and fashion-forward accents (think gunmetal self-locking zips and a wet-look fabric waistband) make them equally appropriate for street wear.

travel pants pickpocket proof

If you’ve ever furtively tucked a $20 bill or credit card into your bra, you’ll immediately understand the thinking behind Pocket Bra , a lightly padded demi-cup that has pockets in its cups and along its sides, designed expressly for this purpose. Available in black and pink, the bra looks just like a regular one, complete with lace detailing at the center and sides, so it can be worn confidently with sheer tops and evening wear.

Lululemon’s ABC Pant Classic

travel pants pickpocket proof

Lululemon’s bestselling ABC Pant Classic is popular for its streamlined yet comfy “anti-ball crushing” (yes, that’s what “ABC” stands for) design. But the casual trousers—essentially a smarter, stretchy non-denim version of classic five-pocket jeans—are also a great choice for men who want to tote their passports incognito. Just tuck it into the concealed-zip back pocket of these pickpocket-proof pants, and you’re good to go.

SCOTTeVEST’s Chloe Glow

travel pants pickpocket proof

A hoodie that has a whopping 18 pockets but still looks like a regular hoodie? Sign me up for SCOTTeVEST’s Chloe Glow . Surprisingly sleek-looking, this capacious hoodie jacket has interior pockets specifically designed for not only keys, credit cards, and cash but also for glasses (with a chamois cleaning cloth attached), a tablet, and a lipstick. Its Spandex-blend fabric is moisture-wicking, and thumbholes in the sleeves keep wrists toasty and fingers free. The Chloe Glow comes in white, black, red, or blue.

travel pants pickpocket proof

Have your flights booked? We’ve got your backside covered with the best men’s travel pants on the market for 2024.

From the Andean cloud forests to deep desert canyons, to long backcountry road trips and Parisian markets, these pants have been tested to tackle any adventure and do it all in style. Our travel-worn team has beaten paths around the globe in these slacks, and we’ve tested over 150 different pairs for almost a decade now. If it’s got the right stuff, we’ve saddled up in a pair.

Scroll through to see all of our recommended buys. At the end of our list, be sure to check out our comprehensive buyer’s guide . Curious just what makes a pant fit for the rigors of travel? Take a peek at our FAQ section. And if you’re still on the fence (or trying to sneak in under a carry-on weight limit), consult our comparison chart .

Editor’s Note: We updated this guide on March 11, 2024, to add our new line-up of travel pants for the year, including our new best overall pick, the Bluffworks Envoy Lightweight Travel Pants , as well as a fresh selection of new and old favorites.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Best Overall Men’s Travel Pants: Bluffworks Envoy Lightweight Travel Pants
  • Best Budget Men’s Travel Pants: UNIONBAY Rainier Travel Chinos
  • Best Travel Pants for Adventuring In: LIVSN Ecotrek Trail Pants
  • Best Travel Pants to Look Like a Local: Western Rise Evolution 2 Pants
  • Most Comfortable Travel Pants: Proof 72-Hour Merino Travel Pant

Bluffworks Envoy Lightweight Travel Pants

  • Fabric 57% recycled polyester, 33% polyester, 10% spandex
  • Fabric weight 210 gsm
  • Fit True to size
  • Weight 15 oz.

Product Badge

  • Lightweight fabric dries quickly
  • Wrinkle resistant
  • Looks and feels more recreational than the Ascenders
  • Anti-UV properties
  • More comfortable than most pants on the list
  • The rear device pocket is uncomfortable to sit on a phone in the back phone pocket
  • Lacks a DWR

Bluffworks’ Ascender Chino has been at or near the top of our travel pants list for four years now. Our main gripe with the Ascender is the heavy lean into the business side of “business casual.” That and the sheer number of pockets sometimes confounded our sleep-deprived travel brains. But now with fewer pockets and less golf-course chino, Bluffworks nailed the perfect travel pants with their Envoy Lightweight Travel Pants iteration ($125).

Trimming the fat started with the pockets. The Envoy drops a pocket to give us nine, but all are functional, and five of them zip shut. Two stealth pockets zip inside the hand pockets, both rear pockets zip shut, and a device pocket zips closed off the thigh and is a great place to store your documents.

Behind the right rear pocket, the Envoy tucks a drop-in style phone pocket below the waistband. This is a brilliant design that is easy to access, yet deep enough to curb sticky fingers. We did find it more comfortable to store the phone on the thigh when seated.

The Envoys close shut with a zippered fly and metal button sewn into the elastic, belt-friendly waistband. In case you left the belt at home, silicone tabs are welded to the inside of the waistband and help keep the pants from shifting down.

Instead of a 100% durable polyester fabric found in the Ascender Chino, the Envoy is constructed from a recycled polyester spun with 10% spandex, giving the pants a 4-way stretch. On the inside, all seams are overlocked and tacked down with a double stitch on the inseam to keep them from rubbing against the skin and reducing exposure to snags. The pants wear light and supple, and given that they don’t have a gusset sewn into the crotch, we found the Envoys very flexible if not the most comfortable pants on our list.

And that’s really where the Envoys shine. If nothing else, a travel pant should go unnoticed — both on you and among potential troublemakers. These pants wear effortlessly, yet are capable of storing all your essentials safely away.

If you haven’t tried Bluffworks before, we recommend looking at the Envoy Lightweights over the Ascenders. While the Ascenders have one more pocket (a passport sleeve on the inside of the left front pocket), only three of the 10 pockets zip shut. The styling of the Envoy has five pockets that zip shut and wears more casually without compromising its city chops.

UNIONBAY Rainier Travel Chinos

  • Fabric 94% nylon, 6% spandex
  • Fabric weight 173 gsm
  • Weight 13 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Comfortable
  • Security options
  • Well priced
  • Pants run long
  • Material tends to collect lint

Travel should never be about the gear. It should be about the experience. An Amazon darling, at $40 a pair, UNIONBAY’s Rainier Travel Pants are a steal, leaving more cash in the wallet for traveling.

True to size, the nylon-spandex blend offers just enough stretch for a full range of motion. The pants keep around the waist with a button and have traditional belt loops if you want to class them up with a belt.

Three nylon zipper pockets pair with deep hand pockets. With two in the back and one on the upper right leg, they’re big enough to secure a passport, the latest iPhone, a notepad, or all of them together.

The Rainiers are rated to 50 UPF and feel durable in the hand, making them acceptable for activities like hiking. The outermost layer is lightly brushed and tends to collect lint and show stains quicker than other pants we tested, but they wash up easily and the 170 gsm fabric is quick to dry.

While a simple pant when compared to the Bluffworks attention to detail, these chino-style pants hit the core elements we looked for when evaluating the best men’s travel pants. If you’re looking for a budget pair of travel pants that pack up tight and breeze from the tarmac to restaurants (and maybe a light hike in between), these are it.

The Rainiers are available in four colors: charcoal, navy, black, and khaki.

LIVSN Ecotrek Trail Pants

  • Fabric 70% Blue Ocean nylon, 25% nylon, 5% spandex

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Form and function meet the apex pant
  • Bomber hardware
  • Tons of pockets with versatile security options
  • DWR is negligible
  • Styling is less formal

LIVSN’s Ecotrek Trail Pant  ($129) brings more stretch, lighter weight, and a more athletic design to their tried and true Flex Canvas Pants. And while these new pants are great for climbing, hiking, or other fast-paced activities in warmer climates, we find they hit all the marks for what we love in travel pants too.

Let’s start with the many pockets, most of which are zippered. Both rear pockets close with a zipper, offering some much-needed peace of mind. Angling off the back of the left thigh is an additional, horizontal zippered pocket, which is great for gadgets or a small wallet.

Both of the mesh hand pockets have coin sleeves to prevent loose currency or keys from shifting around, and the left front hand pocket has a hidden zippered pocket large enough to protect your phone. Rounding out the seven pockets is a reinforced multitool pocket sitting on the right thigh. With so many pocket options, there’s a place for everything that feels designed with purpose instead of over-engineered.

The pocket configuration is dialed, but what sells these pants are the little details. The fabric’s synthetic blend doesn’t feel stiff, and the smartly tailored material walks quietly, fitting our testers with an ergonomic, yet surprisingly athletic fit.

A metal button closes the front and is backed with a leather pledget to prevent busting out. The Ecotrek Trail pants have belt loops, but if you forget your belt, they include a drawstring that hides inside the waistband. The cuffs are reinforced around the heel and so is the utility tool pocket.

While they don’t have a robust DWR, the material breathes very well. When things heat up, the pant legs roll up and keep under a buttoned strap that’s been sewn with reflective tape. These little details add up pretty quickly to make the Ecotrek a stellar pant.

Turn the pants inside out, and you really get an appreciation for the quality and care taken to make these pants. All seams are overlocked, with the flat-felled inseam. This kind of stitching increases durability where you need it and comfort where you want it.

Sustainability is core to LIVSN’s line of clothes, and the  Ecotrek Trail pant  walks the talk. The material is woven from Oceanflex fabric (70% recycled fishing buoys recovered from the ocean), and the YKK zipper taping is made from recycled ocean plastic. The rest is 25% nylon and 5% spandex for stretch.

If you are looking for lightweight, stretchy, durable pants, the LIVSN Ecotrek Trail Pant stands out as one of the best men’s travel pants on the market and can tackle a wide range of activities.

The Ecotrek Trail pants are available in olive, caramel, and charcoal colors, and they come in a range of sizes up to a 40-inch waist and a 34-inch inseam.

Western Rise Evolution 2 Pants

  • Fabric 90% nylon, 10% elastane, woven in Sweden, cut and sewn in the USA
  • Fabric weight 107 gsm
  • Weight 11 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Lightweight material breathes just as well as the first
  • More durability than the first iteration
  • Fantastic fit and construction
  • Better mobility than the first iteration
  • New fabric feels slightly stiffer (breaks in over time)
  • Patch on the inside pocket can feel sticky against the legs (they are changing it to a print)
  • Single security pocket is limiting for some travelers

The first iteration of the Evolution was a GearJunkie staple around the office. Simple, functional, durable — it’s what we recommended to all our friends who ask us, “What’s the best pant for everyday use?” This year, Western Rise updated the Evolution 2.0 ($128) with more stretch, and they are only all the better for it.

This new bump in elastane gives the Evolution 2.0 significant four-way stretch and increased flexibility without sacrificing durability. The jean-like five-pocket design wears more like denim but has the durability of a hiking pant. In fact, one of our editors wore their pair to the top of the Grand Teton.

At the core of the pant is the nylon-elastane blend with a trim jean cut. The nylon fibers are softened by running them through an air-texturized process and then weaving them into a dynamic yarn. The material has a durable weave that mimics denim (and feels less “khaki”).

The DWR coating — or maybe DBR (Durable Beer Resistance) — is outstanding. We wore these pants to Oktoberfest last year where they took the brunt of the fickle Bavarian weather and a rowdy beer hall.

Reach around back, and you’ll find a double pocket on the right, with a hidden zipper pocket that’s large enough to swallow your passport. Western Rise expanded the front coin pocket and made it big enough to holster the largest phone on the market.

After your trip, roll them up and watch them disappear in your luggage. They tick all the boxes for traveling and were the envy of our photographer while cycling through Colombia.

There aren’t many reasons to ding the Evolutions; the material on the new pant feels stiff out of the box but that softens up over time. To help differentiate its pant models (which all have a similar cut and color), Western Rise screened a patch on the inner left pocket. It can feel a little sweaty against the legs.

Aware of this issue, Western Rise is changing that label to a print going forward. One thing that hasn’t changed is the pocket configuration. Some will find the additional zipper pocket just the right amount of added security. Others will prefer more pockets to keep their EDCs. And that’s where we find the Evolution falls short. An extra security pocket would send this pant to the top of the list again.

If you want that Western Rise styling but with a wrinkle-resistant fabric, the Diversion pant ($168) is also a great pick. The double-knit canvas weighs 286 gsm, making it more durable overall but sacrificing packability.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This fantastic five-pocket jean-style pant has been on our list of the best men’s travel pants for 6 years now. For 2 of those years, they were our top pick. We use the Western Rise Evolution 2.0s as a benchmark for fit and comfort and we recommend them to friends looking for a do-everything pant that flies fashionably under the radar.

Proof 72-Hour Merino Travel Pant

  • Fabric 47% merino wool, 33% nylon, 14% polyester, 6% elastane
  • Fabric weight 247 gsm
  • Weight 16.5 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Gusseted crotch
  • Good fit and stretch
  • Pricey — $200 can buy you two (or three) other pants on the list
  • Weighs an ounce or two more than other similar pants
  • Lacks a dedicated device pocket

Merino pants? 100%. Proof is Huckberry’s in-house performance wear, with the 72-Hour line as their go-to travel clothes under the Proof name. New this year, Huckberry released the 72-Hour Travel Pant ($198), and while expensive, it has a lot of merits. We learned it’s all in the fabric.

Wool has natural antimicrobial, DWR, and UPF protection characteristics that we usually laud about when discussing base layers . Because wool wicks moisture, the pants breathe well and keep you feeling dry even in hot climates and sticky bus rides. It keeps the stench down and the comfort high. All things we look for when traveling.

This is the first merino wool pant we’ve seriously considered, and it makes a lot of sense. If you are going far with limited space, you need to trim the fat. And while cutting out extra shirts and pants may once have been a questionable decision, it’s a lot easier when one pair of pants delivers so well.

The design team gave some thoughtful reflection to the 72-Hour pant. Complimenting the five-pocket design is a hidden zippered pocket inside the right rear pocket. The panels are sewn together with a combination of comfortable overstitched inseams, flat-sewn gussets, and durable flat-felled side seams.

The pants are sewn together with a combination of flat-felled and welted overlocked joints, then finished with a robust DWR. All this tech stays under the radar with black hardware finishes.

As styling goes, we find the Proof 72-Hour Travel Pant to be on par with Western Rise’s Evolution 2’s, which around the office we can agree are one of the best styled pants available today. The comfort award, however, goes to the Proofs.

Teren Lightweight Traveler Pants

  • Fabric 88% nylon, 12% spandex
  • Fabric weight 154 gsm

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Pre-treated with an insect repellant
  • Stain resistant
  • Internal drawstring for extra waist security
  • Three zipper-closed pockets
  • Lightweight
  • Tanto-style pocket to clip your EDC
  • Magnetic closure catches on anything metal
  • No durable water repellant finish

Threading the needle between style, function, and durability, Teren’s Lightweight Traveler ($130) is our pick for folks who want one pant to do it all.

The Lightweight Traveler is a tapered chino-style pant with six pockets. Three pockets secure your goods with a zipper. Two zip shut vertically behind the front pockets and the third secures the right back pocket. The pants are washed in Permethrin to ward off critters. Plus, they’re antimicrobial, stain resistant, and offer UV protection.

Our editor Chris Carter wore his Lightweight Travelers on the Continental Divide thru-hike, where they withstood miles of intense bushwhacking through thorny, overgrown trails and post-holing through deep snow. Carter lauded the pants’ ability to stay stench-free for weeks on end.

After the adventure is done, the stain-release fabric readily releases dirt and grime in the wash. These chinos easily suit up for a night on the town.

The Lightweight Travelers ditch the classic button and use a pair of sewn-in magnets to close around the waist. While wearing the pants around town and doing weekend chores, the magnetic closure often got stuck on metal objects.

They snapped to my grocery cart, to my truck bed, to my knife, to loose screws while repairing my gate. Curious about the strength, I went into my garage and started hanging hardware off the pants. The magnet is strong enough to hold a hammer.

But, lean over to tie your shoes (or eat a big meal) and the magnetic fasteners slide apart easily. Stand up, and they pull right back together.

Yeah, the magnetic closure is different and takes some getting used to. Is it problematic? Maybe. The gauss, or magnetic induction, could demagnetize small metal springs in mechanical watches. Given the most popular watch is a smartwatch — this isn’t an issue for most of us. But magnets can also demagnetize credit cards and hotel room keys. We didn’t try to demagnetize a credit card, but it’s something to consider when zipping items in the front pockets.

Worried about the magnet holding the pants up? Backed with belt loops and an internal drawstring, the pants have plenty of options to keep them around the waist.

Other issues: The offset zippered front pockets drop into the same front hand pocket sleeve. They fight for the same real estate, compromising overall storage. We found these pockets a little challenging to access while seated in tight spaces.

For those looking for rain or spill protection, the Terens don’t sport a durable water repellant (DWR). But they do dry out quickly.

With so many pros, these are small cons. The spandex weave yields significant mobility while the nylon deflects catches and tears — all while keeping the pants just over 10 ounces. It’s a great combination of durability and flexibility in a quick-drying pant that packs down small. At 11 ounces, the Lightweight Traveler is truly lightweight, competing only with Western Rise’s Evolution 2’s.

KÜHL Suppressor Jogger

  • Fabric 85% nylon, 15% spandex
  • Fabric weight 165 gsm
  • Weight 12 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Light and packable
  • Durable and stretchy
  • KÜHL drop in style pockets are fantastic
  • Fabric is noisy
  • No button-no fly minimalism may not appeal to everyone
  • Only one zippered pocket on the backside

KÜHL has a strong reputation throughout the outdoor industry for making bomber, thoughtfully designed pieces. And its sub-$100 Suppressor Joggers exemplify those qualities in spades.

The 85% nylon, 15% spandex blend is lightweight, stretchy, breathable, and durable. Plus, a solid DWR treatment rebuffs Mother Nature’s fickle temperament.

Like any good pair of travel pants, the Suppressor’s sport well-thought-out pockets. The angled hand pockets are deep and easy to access while seated. A single stealth pocket zips behind the right back side, and drop-in pockets grace both thighs.

Drop-in pockets are our favorite design to haul devices. They snug the phone but keep your data within reach. The best of the batch fit on the backside of the leg, maintaining accessibility and minimizing the bounce. KÜHL has two of them. Riding down the back of the quads, they are perfect for clipping multitools, knives, or pens, and sheath a phone, passport, or tickets. And it’s these drop-in pockets that make the Suppressor our favorite pant to wear on the plane. Everything stays within easy reach.

If there’s any knock against the Suppressor Joggers , it’s that these are simple pull-on pants. No button, no fly — just an elastic waist and drawstring. On the flip side, this keeps things quick when moving through TSA – there’s no pulling off the belt and redressing after pat-downs.

Ornot Mission Pants

  • Fabric 95% nylon, 5% elastane
  • Fabric weight 232 gsm
  • Weight 14 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Gusseted design gives a great fit
  • Reflective details on cuffs
  • Made in USA
  • Not many – An extra pockets or a drop in phone sleeve, and these would be our top choice for travel pants

When it comes to fit and function, cyclists have it all figured out. Stretch, durability, DWR, and ergonomic pocket layout make a great commuter pant. Fall short on any of these, cyclists will be quick to call you out.

San Francisco-based Ornot hit all the paces with its Mission Shorts. This year, the brand released its beloved short in a pant. True to the brand, the Mission Pants ($148) pull off an effortlessly classy-looking pant. Minimalist aesthetics, five pockets (two that zip shut), and the rear pockets angle off the midline for easy access. The stealth thigh pocket zips contents securely off the back of the leg. The leeward position pegs the device to the leg while in the saddle.

We found the Mission Pants to be lighter than other commuter pants on the market. The 232 gsm fabric breathes well and moves with the body without feeling like a protective shell. They wear easy at the office and feel at home on the street. And if you grab a bike by the horns, both cuffs flip up to reveal reflective hits to keep you seen on the go.

We’ve been following this small brand for years and it keeps bringing its A-game to market. These garments are all made in the USA and offer a 1-year warranty. The brand’s Mission Pants are great on the bike … or not.

Jetty Acadia 2.0 Utility Pant

  • Fabric 100% polyester
  • Fabric weight 240 gsm
  • Weight 16 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Good stretch
  • Comfortable fit
  • Drawstring and belt loops
  • Only available in a 32 inseam
  • Pants stretch and lightly pill over time
  • Front occasionally unbuttons too easily

Jetty’s Acadia Utility Pant ($100) straddles the shoreline between board short and the boardroom. But don’t let its slick chino veneer dissuade you.

The 100% polyester material is warp-knitted, interlocking the poly fibers into a smooth-faced fabric. Jetty sewed in a gusset in the crotch to add extra room for the legs. The combination of cut and materials gives the Acadia an amazing amount of stretch in all directions.

And it also gives the pants fantastic wrinkle resistance. We’ve pulled our Acadias out of overstuffed bags and walked into meetings with deceivingly fresh-pressed-looking pants.

Two pockets zip shut on the backside to keep your goods protected, and the mesh hand pockets are deep. Riding down the right leg is a drop-in device pocket. There is plenty of room in the drop-in pocket, and plenty of room in the relaxed quads before they taper slightly to the bottom hem. This extra room in the thighs lets the phone bounce more than we’d like.

The Acadia Utility Pants close with a tarnished brass button embossed with the Jetty logo. A drawstring is sewn into the waistband so you won’t ever lose it in the wash. And in case you do need to go into the boardroom, Jetty ports the drawstring on both sides of the waistband, so you can tuck the drawstring on the inside of the pants for a polished look.

KETL Mountain Apparel Shenanigan Outdoor Pant

  • Fabric 96% nylon, 4% spandex
  • Fabric weight 156 gsm

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Integrated web belt
  • Three zippered pockets (two in back and one behind the thigh)
  • Deep mesh hand pockets
  • Quiet material
  • Lifetime free repair program
  • Free shipping and returns
  • Slim fit won’t appeal to some. Slimmest pant in the lineup
  • Front snap is weak
  • Metal belt clasp may invite a wanding at TSA

At $100, the KETL Mountain Apparel Shenanigan Outdoor Pants are a refreshing blend of style and tech and one helluva outdoor pant. The nylon twill is blended with a touch of spandex yielding room for adventure in a quiet yet bomber pant.

Should you decide to bring these trousers off-piste, the durable twill has a robust DWR, shunning even the wettest brush. Deep mesh hand pockets and zippered rear pockets make sure all your goods stay where you put them. A roomy device pocket zips shut along the right thigh.

To keep the pants up, an integrated web belt hooks over the button closure. For better (or worse) the belt is sewn into the pants and cannot be removed. KETL bonded a bead of silicon inside the waistband to prevent the pants from riding down. We found these pants stay glued to the backside while wearing a pack.

Across the board, KETL pants fit slim. If you have athletic calves and quads, these will feel snug. If you prefer a more relaxed fit, these probably won’t be a pant for you. What it lacks in room, it gives back in performance. The lack of extra material makes the Shenanigan a great choice for cycling. The durability, flexibility, and tapered fit soar on the mountain bike.

Available only online, KETL makes it easy to buy and return. They offer free shipping both ways and back up their products with a lifetime repair program. But trust us, you’ll want to keep a hold of your KETL Mountain Apparel Shenanigan Outdoor Pants .

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Classically inspired 5-pocket design
  • Hidden 6th zippered pocket in right rear pocket
  • Reflective strips sewn inside both legs for visibility
  • Smallest size is 32”
  • No gusset for extra mobility. Not that they need it.
  • Slightly less fashionable option to Western Rise’s Evolution 2

You don’t have to pack a rod to appreciate Orvis’s O.O.O.O. 5-Pocket Pants ($129). These easy-wearing cotton-poly pants are a cross between your favorite denim and a lightweight khaki. The warp-knit twill has a touch of mechanical stretch and a DWR that is tough enough to negotiate riverside scrambles after work but with enough swagger to make it back to dinner in style.

Sewn together with an exposed overlock stitch, the seam is left exposed on the inside. It’s not tacked down. Though not as durable as a welted seam, the O.O.O.O. (that’s Out-Of-Office, Office) pants trend more durable than many of the pants we’ve seen. This seems entirely appropriate for the classic 5-pocket design pants.

The rear right pocket has an extra hidden zippered pocket to keep your wallet, passport, or fishing license securely stowed. In case you are riding home, both leg’s bottom hems have a six-inch strip of reflective tape sewn into the side seam. We didn’t expect that kind of attention to detail from a fishing brand, but it’s a nice touch that we appreciate.

We’ve been wearing the O.O.O.O. 5-Pocket Pants for years now and found that they are durable, lightweight, and breathable.

Eddie Bauer Guide Pro End-to-Ender Pants

  • Fabric 56% CORDURA® nylon, 37% nylon, 7% spandex
  • Fabric weight Unnkown

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Burly CORDURA fabric
  • Seven pocket design with three that close securely
  • Limited color ways
  • Backcountry styling doesn’t blend as well in the city

Eddie Bauer’s Guide Pro is a favorite with the GearJunkie staff. Classic fit, logical pocket layout, and top-shelf construction, these pants are frequently on sale and will last you for years. The Guide Pro End-to-Ender ($120) is Bauer’s beefed Guide Pro, and with a CORDURA nylon build, it’s more durable without sacrificing the weight, and it is 2 oz lighter. If you like to scramble around and get a little dirt under the nails while traveling, these pants are for you.

Constructed with a vertical weft knit and a generous portion of spandex, the pants have some lateral stretch but are vertically static. Articulated pleats help buy the pants mobility around the knees.

Seven generous and well-positioned pockets dot the pants. In addition to the pair of double-reinforced deep hand pockets, a pair of map pockets rest over the thighs. The left zips shut while the right thigh pocket has a flap that overlaps the lip of the pocket, keeping the contents from bouncing out. On the backside, two flap pockets snap shut and a third patch pocket hides under the right rear pocket.

The thigh pockets are sewn into the pants. This gives the pockets a clean and integrated look. Because Eddie Bauer stitches the entire pant together with overlocked seams, you can feel the extra bulk of the pocket seams against the leg.

These are the one of two pants on our list sewn entirely with overlock stitching, and it’s worth noting. This extra measure of stitching provides more durability, but you’ll feel the bulk. You get used to it over time. It’s really a testament to the overall bomber construction of the End-to-Enders.

The pants close with a beefy zipper and fat button which stay closed. Belt loops are tacked to the waistband for extra options. And two eyelets are punched through the bottom hem of each pant leg, allowing you to run a gaiter cord through the pants if you want.

Eddie Bauer is a stalwart when it comes to value. While the styling is more traditional, the Guide Pro End-to-Ender is one of the best-built pants we’ve seen on the market. And since Eddie Bauer seems to run a sale about every other month, you can eventually find them about 40% off, making the a fantastic deal.

Municipal Overland Cargo

  • Fabric 98% cotton ripstop, 2% spandex
  • Fabric weight 160 gsm
  • Fit Athletic

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Forward style
  • Six pockets, with three that zip shut, and one that snaps shut
  • Draw cord around the bottom hem
  • Elastic waist
  • Offered in one length
  • Treading into expensive territory for a simple pull-up cargo pant

Military meets gym day. From Mark Wahlberg’s warehouse of hustle and sporting style, Municipal’s Overland Cargo ($128) deconstructs the traditional cargo pant and injects modern flair. Which is a notable feat in itself.

Typically, function dictates form on cargo pants. Patched with oversized, baggy pockets can make them wear bulky and look unflattering. The Overland weaves a touch of spandex into the mostly cotton material, sews in a gusseted crotch, and pleated articulated knees to net functional mobility in a slim jogger style pant. These wear less Operation Desert Storm and slide right into urban core.

This doesn’t imply they lost their way. With six streamlined pockets, there is room for all your EDC essentials. In addition to the two deep hand pockets, two rear pockets zip shut. A vertical zipper pocket glides easily over the thigh, and the definitive cargo pocket snaps shut over the left leg with a single button. The entire pant is sewn together with overlocked and welted seams.

Available in size S-3X, the Overlands come in one length — the ideal length for anyone. True to jogger style, the bottom hem stops before the ankle.

An elastic cord is sewn into the bottom hem and can be cinched tight around the leg with a cord lock. Because of these design decisions, the length rides on its style credibility and has an acceptable universal size allowance.

Wahlberg’s style keeps you guessing whether he’s coming from or going to the gym. No button to pull out, no fly to blow, these pants pull up like sweatpants and stay around the waist with a simple drawstring. The Overland Cargo follows Wahlberg’s “I don’t care … but I look good doing it” aesthetic and is a great option for a casual lightweight pant with pockets aplenty.

For those that are cargo-curious — or simply want to throw on a pair of pants and look good without giving it much thought — the Overland Cargos have subtle posture without leaning heavily into athleisure.

How We Tested Men’s Travel Pants

There are few other products we test at GearJunkie that are considered non-negotiable in society. Outside the house, you gotta wear pants (or shorts). And if you’re choosing shorts, you’re probably not looking at the right pants. Travel pants are part of our everyday uniform allowing us to test them daily. We test pants for the office grind, after-school errands, dispatching weekend chores, and yes, of course, travel, constantly logging test hours to find the best travel pants on the market.

Cozy in coach, capable of tackling adventure, but formal enough to wear to dinner, travel pants span the use case spectrum. We’ve worn them on intercontinental flights to Germany, Italy, France, and Slovenia, as well as transcontinental flights from Jacksonville to Boise. In warmer climates, we’ve pulled them out of our bikepacking bags on cool nights in Nicaragua and high up on the Colombian Coffee Triangle. One tester even wore his pair to the top of the Grand Teton.

When we get our hands on a new pant, we first take a look at the materials. We gauge the fabric weight, breathability, and the material’s ability to resist wrinkling. Synthetics with a DWR will pack down smaller, bounce back from being jammed in luggage on an overnight flight, and resist stains (and spills) better than cotton.

A touch of spandex affords some stretch and nylon tends to be more durable. We then turn them inside out to look at the seams joining the pants together, looking at where costs were cut and potential quality issues might cause a blowout on the road.

To be considered for our list, pants need at least one pocket that can be zipped shut to safely secure a passport or wallet. The hand pockets should be deep enough to keep keys and change from accidentally spilling out, or have zippers that prevent mishaps. No joke, one pair of pants we tested (not on this list) spit a wallet out at work without us even knowing it.

We then evaluated each pant’s fit, durability, packability, ability to bounce back from repeated wash and wear, and unpacking. We want to find out if a pair of pants can be washed in the sink in the evening and be ready to wear the following morning.

We want to see if the material resists wrinkling. And we want to know if the pants are cut too large, too small, or hike up the legs. The best material and construction alone can’t fake a good fit. We test pants for mobility and proper length. Does the pant bind in the crotch? Are the gussets appropriate? Are the legs cut at a proper length or do they ride up when walking?

Our testing focuses primarily on comfort, versatility, and functionality when in transit, so if you’re looking for something more durable for active pursuits, check out our picks for the  best hiking pants . We also have a guide for the  best women’s travel pants  to get your travel companion ready for the long haul.

Testing History

Steve Graepel has been leading the men’s travel pant buyer guide since 2015. Over the span of 8 years, Graepel has seen over 225 pairs of travel pants, rigorously testing 150 pants. Graepel has worked at GearJunkie as a contributing editor since 2009, testing everything from packrafts, to bike bags, sleeping bags, winter boots, and trail runners. His latest beat is travel pants and flannels. Before his time as a fashion blogger, he wrote for Travel Idaho, National Geographic Adventure, Patagonia’s Tin Shed, Trail Runner, and Gear Patrol.

Graepel has researched and tested travel pants extensively — traveling, working, and camping in the high alpine desert of Idaho, Montana, and Utah, and traveling abroad in a variety of environments including Europe, Asia, Central, and South America. He continues to test travel pants year-round and searches for anyone who will listen to his yarns about the best travel trousers.

In 2020, we tried 27 pairs and listed 15 pants on our men’s buyers guide. In 2021, we tested an additional 35 pairs, highlighting nine new pants on our list. In 2022 we saw an additional 23 pairs, adding six new pants. In 2023 we looked at 38 pairs, adding seven new pants to the men’s travel pant buyer’s guide. Finally, in 2024, we’ve reviewed 27 pants, updating our Men’s Travel Pants buyer guide with nine new pants.

Each year introduces new styles and materials, and we try to reflect the best on the market of that year. Some trousers remain on the list, year after year. They are either so good, or so good of a deal, that they are tough to topple.

To keep a finger on the pulse of pants, we read reviews from top sites and contact manufacturers directly. Steve Graepel has regular conversations with pant brand owners and representatives in the travel pant space. These relationships allow us to stay up to date on what makes pants better every year, and keep an eye on sleeper pants that just don’t have the marketing budget to get mass attention.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose Travel Pants

Regardless of whether the pants are straight-leg or slim, a good pair is one that follows the human form and doesn’t bag out after repeated washings, or bloat when packed with your phone and keys. The length should fit your inseam or run longer so you can roll them up or get them tailored.

Almost every pant on our list has a great fit. If they didn’t, we’ve shared the cons. Both the Jetty’s and UNIONBAY’s pants ran a little long. On the other end, Municipal’s Overland Cargo is short by design and is only available in one length. Both Eddie Bauer and Orvis offer a variety of inseams for a dialed fit (from 30″ to 34″).

travel pants pickpocket proof

We scored each pant for both its ability to adventure, wear in coach, and hit the streets. Some pants, like KETL Mountains Shenanigans, have a bias for stout use. The Shenanigans are coated with a solid DWR and are our choice for adventure trips where you can’t sacrifice durability.

If traveling by plane, we prefer comfortable pants with accessible pockets. While 5-pocket styled jeans or chinos wear well on the street, their pockets are harder to access when sitting on the plane. Instead, we prefer a jogger or cargo pant that has vertical zippered pockets and drop-in device pockets on the legs.

Both Municipal and KÜHL had easy-to-access pockets in the plane. Eddie Bauer’s Guide Pro End-to-Ender has two generous thigh pockets. But both are sewn into the pants and tighten up over the thigh when seated. This makes it harder to pull the contents out.

For comfort in coach, you don’t need to look past Bluffworks Envoy . They look great and have plenty of pockets to stay organized. KÜHL’s Suppressor Jogger dialed in the drop-in pockets and is lightweight and durable, but the material isn’t nearly as soft as Eddie Bauer’s pants. It’s always a trade-off.

Style Matters

While comfort is key, we also need to be able to show ourselves in public (no washed-out gray sweatpants on this list). The most versatile travel clothes should be able to tackle a hike without getting roughed up, or walk into town looking sharp enough to peruse a museum, and duck in for fine dining afterward.

Unfortunately, the cargo pockets take away some formality while out on the town. With its jogger styling, KÜHL didn’t design around Michelin stars. They prioritized function and durability, mapping to utility. KÜHL, Municipal, and Eddie Bauer each have unique cargo styling that brings a touch of modernity to the military-inspired side-pocket pants. In general, we love cargo-style pants and joggers while sitting on the plane. It keeps all your essentials within reach.

On the other hand, Western Rise’s Evolution 2 and Proof’s 72-Hour Merino are fantastically styled everyday pants, but both have a single security pocket to maintain that sleek look. They are our go-to choice for travels to big cities where we want to kick up the look and feel at home while traveling abroad.

Clean lines, darker colors, and traditional styling help you blend into crowds and stave off the would-be pickpocket’s radar. The best men’s travel pants should look as good as they feel without shouting “ tourist .”

The material should be lightweight and, in our preference, darker to minimize showing the dirt collected along the way. That said, we were astounded by how well a fresh DWR can resist stains on even the fairest beige pants.

Fabric Weight

Lightweight performance fabrics can withstand repeated washings in a sink, line dry overnight, and stay wrinkle-free after weeks on the go. Today’s fabrics offer advanced sun protection and moisture-wicking properties and are often water-resistant or water-repellent.

Fabric weight is measured in grams per square meter (GSM). A heavier GSM will take up more room in your bag and take longer to dry. We find a 200-ish GSM fabric weight, like on our top pick from Bluffworks, light and breezy, and dries out quickly.

A welterweight fabric will disappear in the bag and dry out insanely fast, but going too light sacrifices durability. All the pants we tested are durable enough to venture off the pavement.

If you want the lightest pant you can find, give KETL Mountain’s Shenanigan a look. The 156 GSM fabric rolls up tight and is exceptionally durable. Western Rise also uses a lighter GSM fabric, but the pants weigh more overall.

travel pants pickpocket proof

Fabric Type

A cotton blend fabric adds breathability and a cooling effect, which is great for warmer climates, but can also sacrifice durability. And, unless treated with a DWR, cotton can wet out more easily and hold water longer.

The Orvis and Municipal’s Overland Cargo weave some cotton into their blend. To beef up the durability, the natural fiber is woven with a synthetic like polyester or nylon and an elastic component for stretch.

If you choose to go with denim or cotton, consider a stretchy fabric with a bit of spandex or elastane for comfort and flexibility while on the road. It will resist wear longer, dry faster, and feel much more comfortable. While not on this year’s list, Aviator’s The Best Travel Jeans in the World are very comfortable and weave in some stretch, but they weigh nearly twice as much as every other pant on the list. Our cotton choices keep the weight down.

Most of the pants on this list are woven from synthetic fibers. Synthetics tend to stand up to more abuse than their natural counterparts. For example, Ornot’s Mission Pant is incredibly durable and is built for men who abuse pants while in the saddle.

Unique this year, we saw a merino wool synthetic blend with Proof’s 72-Hour Merino Travel Pant. Wool is known for its odor-resistant and insulative qualities. Contrary to what you might think, they stay surprisingly cool and breathe well in hot climates. For durability and stretch, Proof weaves nylon, polyester, and a touch of elastane.

Weaving in spandex or elastic adds mobility, but can also give the pants a polished, slick finish. KÜHL weaves in a whopping 15% spandex into the material, but most pants will have between 2-6% for a combination of durability and mobility. Bluffworks , Unionbay , and Jetty feel more formal with their smooth-faced fabric finishes. Material finishes are more of a personal preference and don’t affect their water resistance, which is added with a DWR wash.

Our favorite pants come from Bluffworks. While the fit is fantastic, they don’t have a DWR. This makes them less desirable if you are traveling to places that rain a lot. However, they excel in so many other ways that they still stand out as our top choice. On the flip side, Western Rise’s DWR not only deflects dirt and grime on the road, but liters of beer simply rolled off them at Oktoberfest. We really took one for the team while testing.

Performance fabrics are standing up to heavy use like never before. Shelling out a few more bucks for quality generally gets you into a more durable pant that should hold up to more extensive use. We’ve put in countless hours testing the pants on this list, so you’re starting in the right place.

Seam Construction

Seams are often overlooked. Out of sight, out of mind, seams bring two patches of fabric together and are crucial for durability and comfort. But this is where we can differentiate the good from the great, and this is where we get passionately nerdy.

Flat-felled seams are best for joining heavy fabrics together. Think denim. The material doesn’t stretch and the fabric is woven from heavy cotton yarn. You want a solid seam to join the pants together. The fabric is joined, then rolled over itself and double stitched for a clean, bomber fasten.

None of the pants on our list are joined entirely from flat-felled seams, though LIVSN and Proof incorporate a flat-fell seam on at least one leg seam. In general, we find it more important to flat-fell the inseam of the pants (which is what Proof does).

Too much material tacked together with a flat-fell seam can cause rubbing against the legs. And most travel pants are constructed from lighter-weight fabrics, so pants don’t always need this extra durable seam construction.

They can get away with a less expensive, and more comfortable overlocked seam. An overlocking stitch, or welt-seam, has a lower profile, leaving the raw edge exposed but sewn down to the pant. Plus they are nearly as durable as the venerable flat-felled stitch, but can feel more comfortable.

Some overlocked stitches aren’t tacked down. That is, the seam isn’t locked down flat with a second row of stitching, leaving the surged seam exposed on the inside. This usually isn’t a big deal. Our main concern would be that the stitching could get caught on something and start to unravel. But we haven’t ever had this experience and it’s a fine option to use when binding two lightweight materials together. Orvis, Ornot, and even Bluffworks uses a combination of overlocked and welted overlocked seams.

The simplest seam, or plain seam, joins the two sides together with a simple, single stitch. Often the cut material is finished with a surger to prevent the material from fraying, but the joining seam itself is sewn together with a single stitch, and the exposed edges butterfly on the inside of the pant.

This is often used for lightweight material where want to reduce the bulk as much as possible. We see this used on Western Rise’s Evolution 2. In theory, this is not a highly durable seam construction. And we’ve seen this kind of seam unravel on a few pants we’ve tested. We’ve also been beating our Western Rise’s for years now and have yet to see their plain seam blow.

travel pants pickpocket proof

We like a pant that doesn’t ride up or bind when seated, and moves with you when active. DUER and KÜHL are very close at the top, for pure comfort, you can’t beat  Bluffworks Envoy . Beyond the fantastic material, the pant is is available in slim and regular fit, so there’s truly a comfortable pant for everyone’s preference.

travel pants pickpocket proof

We’ve tested  Western Rise’s Evolution lineup   standing outside in Bogota monsoon season, climbing snow and ice on the Grand, and prosting over beers at Oktoberfest. The DWR not only sheds spills, but it deflects dirt and grime too.

After a week of wearing them across the Alps, including a day sitting in the stairwell of an overbooked train to Munich, we were shocked at how clean our light khaki Evolution 2.0s walked off the return flight. We were also impressed with KETL Mountain’s Shenanigan’s. Water immediately beads off the surface.

If you’re bringing one pair of pants, you’ll eventually have to wash them while on the road. A lightweight synthetic pant is your best bet for a comfortable morning. Here again, Western Rise’s Evolutions  rose to the top. They are lightweight, durable, and dry out quicker than most. They also remain cool and breezy in hot climates and wear supremely well.

The pair of large cargo pockets on Muncipal’s Overland Cargo are easy to access and have plenty of space to hold your kit and do it without looking like Urkel. For an equally impressive pocket game, but a more polished look, we recommend looking at Bluffworks Envoy, which stealthily hides nine pockets in the otherwise casual-looking chino. Eddie Bauer’s Guide Pro End-to-Ender is close, with seven practical and accessible pockets.

travel pants pickpocket proof

With their high CORDURA count, the Eddie Bauers are tough to beat. Ornot’s Mission pants weaves a high nylon count, and come in a very close second for durability.

For long flights on the plane, we like comfortable, casual look with easy pocket access. We give the nod to Municipal’s Overland Cargo. The deep horizontal pockets are easy to access while seated and the high cotton count breathes well.

KÜHL’s Suppressor Joggers have the highest spandex count on the list at 15%. They are super flexible, light, durable, and have a good DWR. For a more formal look, Bluffworks has an equally impressive spandex weave (10%) and is by far the most comfortable pant on our list.

For a good combination of flexibility, durability, and all-around wearability, we recommend Western Rise’s Evolution 2. If you want to splurge, we also liked Proof’s 72-Hour Merino Travel Pant, which blends 6% elastane into the wool-synthetic base. Proof’s pants are nearly a one-and-done purchase. They are durable and stay stench-free on the road, making them the only pants you may need to bring.

Pick-Pocket Proof Pants by Clothing Arts (Review)

By: Author Dave Lee

Posted on Last updated: September 8, 2023

I glanced down at my left pants pocket and noticed the zipper was pulled up more than an inch. It rested against the button closure of my Pick-Pocket Proof Pants, unable to be pulled further unless the flap was first unbuttoned. Did I forget to close it all the way?

Wearing Pick-Pocket Proof Pants somewhere in Guatemala

Did the young Nicaraguan woman talking with her friend in the seat behind me while we waited for the colectivo to fill up attempt to pick my pocket?

She'd had ample time if that were the case. I was the only person on the colectivo when she and her friend took their seats directly behind me.

We were there alone for at least ten minutes before more people got inside, and I recalled at least once feeling her skin against my left arm.

I hadn't noticed it initially, but now I couldn't believe what I saw. The space between my front-row seat and the left side of the van was wide enough for me to fit my entire upper arm.

It would've been effortless to have slid her hand through the gap and toward my pocket.

With the zipper down, and the flap closed, any pickpocket would be unable to access your belongings without you noticing

My heart was beating faster as the questions swirled through my mind. I felt my pocket, confirming my iPhone was still there.

Then, I fully closed the zipper on my Pick-Pocket Proof Pants and wedged my left arm in the gaping space between my seat and the one behind me.

It remained there for the hour-and-a-half drive from Managua to Leon.

While I'll never know for sure whether it was my mistake or I was nearly the victim of a third successful pickpocket (the first time was in Barcelona  after a soccer match and the second at a horse parade in Medellin), I do know if it was the latter, the design of the pants prevented my phone from being stolen.

Table of Contents

Meeting Adam, Founder of Clothing Arts

Medellin, colombia, cartagena, colombia, guatemala, honduras, el salvador, and nicaragua, final thoughts.

I first met Adam Rapp, the man behind the P^cubed Pick-Pocket Proof Pants and founder of Clothing Arts, at TBEX, a travel blogging conference.

He introduced me to high-tech clothing designed to prevent pickpockets and offered to send me a complimentary pair of pants in Colombia and a travel shirt.

I knew exactly how I planned to test them out. I would take them to the same parade where a pickpocket stole my cell phone from my front jean pocket in 2010.

Pick-Pocket Proof Pants on the Road

Crowds gather for a horse parade in Medellin.

They arrived just in time for the 27th annual horse parade , which I attended with my friend Viviana. We walked much of the parade route over three to four hours.

I secured my wallet and phone in my left front pocket and used my right front pocket for my point-and-shoot camera whenever I wasn't taking photos.

There are small hidden pockets in each of the side pockets; however, I didn't feel the need to use them.

In the beginning, there was plenty of space around us, but once we crossed a bridge to the side with more of the partiers and tailgating, it was another story.

It was late afternoon, and the crowd had swelled with onlookers and drunken revelers. We tried to walk a certain way at one point, but it was so crowded we had to reverse course.

There were also some choke points that only one person could pass through at a time, and you were shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers for what seemed like an eternity.

The great thing about the P^cubed pants is that once you close that button flap on a pocket, nobody will get in there without you at least noticing (and hopefully, that awareness alone scares them away).

As a result, I felt secure moving through the crowded sections. After the parade, my Pick-Pocket Proof Pants quickly became a part of my regular wardrobe in Medellin.

Wearing a white Pick-Pocket Proof Shirt to my birthday dinner at Don Juan in Cartagena

A month later, I was in Cartagena for my birthday. The heat and humidity along Colombia's Caribbean coast can be unbearable.

During the day, I'd wear my P^cubed convertible pants as shorts, which is as simple as unzipping the legs. It'd taken me a long time to adopt convertible travel pants, but now I'm a huge fan.

On the night of my birthday, I paired the pants with the white button-down shirt  they sent me.

Viviana and I began with dinner at Don Juan, a restaurant favored by a previous Colombian President, and ended with a romantic carriage ride through the Old Town.

The shirt was stylish and breathable, and to my surprise, I didn't feel stifled by wearing long sleeves.

The following year, I spent six weeks backpacking in Central America, and the convertible Pick-Pocket Proof Pants were the only pants I had with me.

I wore them as pants throughout Guatemala due to the cold evening temperatures and as shorts in Nicaragua , even when I went volcanoboarding.

Atop Cerro Negro in Nicaragua, before I suited up to go volcanoboarding in my Pick-Pocket Proof Pants

During my 23 hours of transit in various chicken buses and colectivos to/from Copan, Honduras , I'd zip up the pockets and close the button flaps to relax, knowing my wallet and phone were safe.

I'd never experienced such secure pockets on a pair of travel pants, and I enjoyed them.

I also did this while taking photos in urban settings like Antigua, San Salvador , Leon, and Granada.

While my review has focused on the security features of the two front pockets and the secret pockets inside them, there are also two back pockets. Each of the rear pockets has zipper and button closures.

Plus, these adventure pants have two cargo pockets with button closures. And they're stain-resistant, moisture-wicking, and fairly quick-drying.

Overall, I was and continue to be completely satisfied with these great pants. Consider a pair of Clothing Arts pants if you want an alternative to an uncomfortable money belt.

The travel clothing I've tried from Clothing Arts are high-quality products designed and made by a fellow traveler.

Be careful on sizing when purchasing these pants, as on the Clothing Arts website, the reviews are not reflective of everyone who does submit one. I purchased the women's pants one size larger than my usual size, to be on the safe side, as I can sometimes cross into the next size dependent on fit. Sadly, they didn't fit, and Clothing Arts has declined both my review and my request for them to fix the issue, asking me to pay shipping to exchange them. If you have to buy 2 sizes up from usual, you need to know this from go. Great looking pants, and a quality product, but if they don't fit and the company isn't providing a good level of customer service, potential buyers should have access to that information.

Great idea for keeping your pockets full! I like the dressy pants they have on their website too - less pockets on the outside.

I wonder why they have the zipper pull down to close? It makes more sense to me if it's zipped "up," rather than letting things fall out the bottom it it gets opened a little like you wrote about.

Safe travels!

Pickpockets are the nightmare of all travelers. There is nothing worse than getting your valuables stolen in a foreign country, where they can be hard to replace simply because you don't know the local way of getting things done. Even if you do, it can be a hustle and I am sure that you didn't go abroad just to get another passport there :)

It is really good that these pants are convertibles. As you have said, it would have been impossible for you to survive the heat and humidity of Colombia without removing the lower part of the pants.

A Guide to the Best Pickpocket Proof Clothing For Travel

Travel clothing with hidden pockets is not a new concept. Thankfully pickpocket-proof clothing for travel is now more practical, secure, and stylish than ever before.

You no longer have to stand out as a tourist, sacrificing your own personal style and comfort whilst trying to stay safe when you travel. The travel clothing market is now more fashionable than ever.

Table of Contents

While comfort and practicality are still at the forefront of design, style is becoming an equally important factor in travel clothing lines. A trend that is also becoming more popular in the anti-theft bag market with stylish anti-theft backpacks designed specifically with women and fashion in mind.

Travel clothing companies now apply the same comfort and fashion-forward principles to anti-theft and pickpocket-proof clothing and accessories such as the often used, pickpocket-proof pants.

Or rather – are introducing pickpocket-proof functionality to the latest travel clothing trends and styles.

Staying Safe While You Travel

We believe some of the easiest ways to stay safe when you travel is in the preparation before you travel , being aware while you travel, and not drawing attention to yourself as an easy target.

The way you dress is just one way you can minimize your chances of any unwanted attention from thieves and pickpockets, especially in destinations like Marrakech in Morocco or the Bazaars of Istanbul .

We have rounded up some stylish anti-theft travel jackets that will see you through from sightseeing to dinner. Pickpocket-proof pants with classic and sleek lines.

Even some pocket worthy briefs that will keep more than the family jewels safe.

We have covered them all in this handy guide, separated into travel clothes for women and men for easy navigation.

How to Avoid Pickpockets

The easiest way to avoid pickpockets is to be diligent, especially in crowded tourist areas such as Rome or travelling across a country such as Morocco by train . These are just some of the things to consider when travelling.

  • Keep bags close to you and zipped up — preferably worn crossbody, not over the shoulder. A good anti-theft travel handbag or anti-theft backpack is always a great travel investment. There are also lots of very stylish anti theft fanny packs and waist bags on the market now which can be worn around the waist or crossbody.
  • Don’t flash lots of money around or wear fancy expensive jewellery or clothing arts. You will only attract attention to yourself.
  • Discreet clothing that doesn’t scream tourist is always best. This is why the best pickpocket-proof clothing has discreet pockets and is styled similar to normal fashion trends.
  • Don’t place anything of value in a pocket that does not close securely and preferably never in a back pocket.
  • Be aware of people creating strange distractions, especially children and don’t allow people to crowd you unnecessarily.
  • If an interaction with a stranger doesn’t feel right, it usually isn’t. Keep your distance.

Take Care of Your Own Belongings

Too often we see tourists walking around with bags gaping open, wallets and phones hanging out of their back pockets or even handbags swinging from a street-side restaurant chair. A common sight with visitors to Rome and Paris.

When these travellers lose something, their first thought is they have been pickpocketed.

More than likely they have. After all, these travellers have made themselves an easy target. However, it is often a case of things left behind, phones falling out of an open backpack, or cash falling out of a gaping side pocket.

SAFE TRAVEL FACT

Each day around the world, more than 400,000 travellers are targeted by pickpockets. Even more simply forget or misplace their valuables while they are travelling.

Anti-theft travel gear and pickpocket-proof clothing are only as good as you are careful with your belongings . It will stop a thief from slipping a hand in your pocket, but it can’t help you if you don’t zip up first.

Buying Guide for Pickpocket Proof Clothing For Travel

What is pickpocket proof clothing.

Pickpocket-proof clothing is essentially a piece of clothing with functionality to prevent thieves from accessing and removing valuables from your person.

These features may include internal pockets, hidden pockets, or zippered pockets.

What features Should Good Pickpocket Proof Clothing Have?

  • Good pickpocket-proof clothing doesn’t need to have lots of pockets, although many travel garments do. They just need to have at least one secure pocket.
  • Pockets should be discreet, not like fashion cargo pants or shorts where the pockets are obvious and easy to access.
  • Ideally, all secure pockets should have a zip closure, preferably a zip hidden in a seam or be virtually impossible for a thief to slip their hand in by way of a button closure tab or similar.
  • Hidden pockets with secure closures.

Choosing the Right Pickpocket Proof Clothing for Travel

Many travel clothing companies will advertise garments with lots of pockets as an alternative to using your carry on baggage for travel essentials.

Do not confuse these albeit handy travel clothes for pickpocket proof clothing. Lots of pockets do not always equate to safe – just convenience.

Make sure the pickpocket proof clothing you choose is firstly comfortable and a design you like. The clothing will not keep your valuables safe if you don’t like wearing them.

When Choosing Anti Pickpocket Travel Wear Consider the Following:

Check the garment has the pocket configuration you need and like.

There is no point buying a pair of travel pants with 15 pockets when all you need is two secure pockets for cash and passports. Or a travel jacket has 20 pockets, but none of them fit what you want to carry.

Once you have decided on a design, then check the quality of the secure pockets and make sure they suit the purpose – do you need to access the items regularly from the pocket or keep them stowed away for long periods?

These factors will determine the type of pockets you want or need.

Construction & Material

When choosing clothes for travel – comfort, wearability, and durability are paramount.

  • Check the fabric and the design allows comfortable movement.
  • Is the fabric breathable or does it have moisture-wicking?
  • Is the garment quick-drying, is it water and stain repellant?
  • Is the weight of the garment suitable for the climate you will be travelling to?
  • Are the secure pocket closures high quality and reliable, e.g. zips or button closures?
  • Is the design suited for a flexible fit or is the cut right for you?
  • Think about how much stuff you will want to carry in the pocket configuration and how that may affect the size you need.

Again, think about breathable fabrics, stretch, and movability. Do the design and fabric allow for comfortable movement?

Will the design be comfortable and suitable for the type of travel you are doing?

Is the style something you would usually wear? If not, maybe look for something more towards your style; otherwise, you may be inclined not to wear it.

Is the pickpocket proof features discreet in relation to the style and cut of the garment? The best pickpocket proof clothes are ones you don’t even realize are.

I would also highly reccommend the Duluth Trading Company gardening vest. It has 10 pockets, princess seams so you still look feminine, and sheds dirt. Great for travel, hiking, and of course gardening! It has hidden zippered pockets and if you are really worried about safety, put your wallet in the inside zippered pocket and zip up the vest. No one is getting in without your knowledge! Their overalls also have a plethora of pockets, but may not be as fashionable.

Packing Light Travel

Stop pickpockets with an assortment of anti-pickpocket gear

by Anne Betts | Mar 22, 2024 | Travel Gear , home featured , Packing Light Travel Gear | 28 comments

anti-pickpocket-gear

Updated March 22, 2024

Lurking under the surface of some of the world’s most beautiful cities are hordes of pickpockets preying on unsuspecting, unprepared, and distracted visitors. Pickpockets and other street thieves are proficient at what they do. They’re a curse to travellers, but they can be thwarted with some basic anti-pickpocket gear .

Identifying appropriate anti-pickpocket gear should be part of a packing strategy for most trips.

Table of Contents

Other benefits of anti-pickpocket gear

1. outerwear with zippered internal pockets, 2. other clothing with pockets, (i) pocket clips, pouches, and tethers, (iii) pouch on a leash, 4. underwear with pockets, 5. socks with a zippered pocket, 6. scarves with hidden pockets, 7. bracelet wallet, 8. wristband wallet, (i) waist wallet, (ii) leg wallet, (iii) portapocket, 10. other wallets, 11. security belt, (i) triple combination lock, (ii) lock and cable, (iii) bag cover, (i) external security, (ii) internal security, 14. packing organizers with attachment points, 15. packable travel purse, 16. ‘bra bank’, 17. other clothing and accessories with pockets, 18. anti-theft bag, emergency cash stash.

  • The right gear lessens the chance of losing something because of disorganization, carelessness, or neglect.
  • It presents different options for splitting up cash, financial cards, and identity documents. When these are in separate places, your risks and losses are minimized of you’re robbed.
  • Anti-pickpocket clothing can help avoid baggage fees. What you wear doesn’t count against your baggage allowance. It’s surprising how much can be carried in clothing with pockets. In outerwear with pockets, I’ve stowed 1.4 kg / 3.1 lb of stuff. It’s not a huge amount but when travelling on airlines with a 7-kg or 8-kg carry-on allowance, it can mean the difference between going carry-on and having to check a bag.

A comprehensive assortment of anti-pickpocket gear

What’s in your anti-pocket inventory? Most items in my collection of commercially produced and handmade products have one thing in common — at least two steps are required to access my belongings. It’s less convenient for me, but it’s more difficult for experienced pickpockets who view open bags or single zippers as easy terrain and rely on stealth and speed to make a hasty retreat.

Having a variety of anti-pickpocket gear means a traveller can be selective when choosing what might work best given the season, destination, and nature of the trip.

Might some of the following suggestions work for you? Or, perhaps they’ll inspire other ideas or adaptations that are consistent with your packing regimen, travel wardrobe, and travel habits.

SCOTTeVEST is well known for its range of clothing with pockets. Some items boast as many as 43 pockets — some designed for keys, sunglasses, passport, tablet, phone, pen, and a water bottle. Most pockets are on the inside, with zippers, useful as anti-pickpocket gear. I have a 14-pocket Chloe Hoodie , and a 20-pocket lightweight travel vest .

scottevest-vest-packed-with-in-flight-essentials

Brooklyn-based company Clothing Arts makes a variety of anti-pickpocket gear. I adore my Cubed Travel Jacket that’s ideal for three-season travel. It boasts eight internal pockets that are perfect for stowing a lot of gear when going carryon or exploring a destination.

clothing-arts-travel-jacket

3. Engineered pockets

Inserted pockets, and adaptations to existing pockets, can transform existing travel clothing into effective anti-pickpocket gear.

Place a tether tab inside a phone case and attach a retractable coil leash. The wallet phone case from Smartish has a secure pocket for cash and a few cards, and the Cocases phone tether tab with an adhesive backing stays in place when fixed to the inside of the case. A retractable coil with a lobster clasp at each end allows for easy access to a phone while remaining attached to the pocket. The leash comes in two different lengths.

(ii) Added pockets

Some of my trips involve cycling. That’s when my three-quarter cycling knicks might earn a place on my packing list. Two internal credit-card sized pockets in the back of my cycling pants accommodate a financial card and cash in a small zip-top craft baggie. Each pocket has a flap for enhanced security.

anti-pickpocket-inside-pocket

For women, tights and leggings are perfect for packing light travel. They’re comfortable, lightweight, and versatile. They can be dressed up or down, used as loungewear, sleepwear, exercise gear, or for an extra layer of warmth when the temperature drops. A credit-card-sized pocket added to the inside waistband of tights expands options for separating financial cards or not carrying a purse.

pocket-for-credit-card-in-tights

Lululemon leggings have a permanent place on my packing list. The Fast and Free have five waistband pockets and two side drop-in pockets. The Pace Rival Crop have five pockets: three on the waistband and two on the thighs. The zippered pocket in the back of the waistband is particularly useful. Under a long shirt or tunic, it’s hidden from view but not inaccessible to a pickpocket. For added security, a silk pouch on a leash has been attached to the lining of the pocket.

anti-pickpocket-pouch-on-leash

These engineered pockets haven’t failed me yet. I can’t imagine a skilled pickpocket making off with my belongings without my knowledge. This isn’t to say I can let my guard down or underestimate how skillful some pickpockets are. What I can count on is that there are plenty of easier targets to attract a pickpocket’s attention.

pickpocket-target-phone-in-back-pocket

There’s a variety of underwear with pockets on the market. I’ve worn four types and prefer the designs from Clever Travel Companion and H&R:

  • Clever Travel Companion’s Women’s Cotton Underwear with Secret Pockets
  • H&R Underwear with Secret Pockets

Both have two zippered pockets, in front under the waistband. They’re very comfortable, and versatile enough to wear as loungewear after a long travel day. They’re also soft enough to wear as sleepwear. This is handy for sleeping with valuables on a sleeper bus, overnight train, or in communal accommodation. Of the two, I prefer H&R (black ones in the picture). They’re much cheaper, lighter (73 g / 2.6 oz compared to 90 g / 3.2 oz), and dry faster.  They’re longer by 2 in / 5 cm and as such, I’ve worn them as shorts. The pockets are a little wider so a passport slides in easier than it does in a Clever Travel Companion pocket.

anti-pickpocket-underwear-with-pockets

I haven’t tried one, but The Travel Bra makes several different types of travel bras. The quick-dry Ultra-Light Travel Bra with pockets has five, including one drop-down mesh pocket large enough to accommodate a passport.

My Zip It Everyday Travel Socks with a hidden zippered pocket are very comfortable. Each pair has one pocket that’s large enough to carry emergency cash and financial cards. The pocket is high enough that the contents don’t come in contact with the ankle joint or interfere with the movement of my foot. The elasticized band is effective at keeping things in place. The pocket feels just as comfortable on the inside of my leg as it does on the outside.

The pocket has a nylon zipper that won’t set off security systems. The socks’ quick-drying properties mean that I can wash them in the evening and they’re dry by morning. Zip It Gear advertises a couple of technical benefits: a holofibre footbed that may reduce swelling, and ComFortrel XP that wicks away moisture to keep feet cool and dry.

anti-pickpocket-socks-with-zipper

Scarves with pockets are triple-duty accessories. They provide warmth, dress up an outfit, and protect valuables. I have a rectangular scarf with a hidden pocket but it doesn’t feel as secure as my two infinity scarves. An infinity scarf consists of one long circular loop, usually wrapped twice around the neck.

Both of my infinity scarves have hidden pockets that are large enough to accommodate a passport. However, I find the pockets work better for carrying a financial card and some cash.

Two layers of fabric wrapped twice around the neck translate into four layers, with another two layers at the position of the pocket. While a scarf may be advertised as lightweight, my experience is that a scarf with so many layers of fabric is comfortable for temperatures that don’t exceed 20 or so degrees Celsius.

The reversible scarf from Etsy worked perfectly for an autumn trip to New York. With so many Etsy sellers advertising such a rich array of colours, it’s not difficult to find something compatible with your travel wardrobe.

anti-pickpocket-infinity-scarf-with-zipper

My bracelet wallet dresses up an outfit. It’s light, classy, and functional. The pocket sits on the back of the wrist, blending into the design. As such, it’s mostly hidden from sight. The pocket accommodates a credit card, hotel room card key, and emergency money. I bought it from Etsy seller HelgaRachinskaya.

anti-pickpocket-pocket-bracelet

My Sprigs Banjees Wrist Wallet has two pockets, one with a hood and one with a zipper. The hooded pocket can accommodate a phone but I find it’s a ‘stretch’ to fit a larger phone. The pocket boasts a reinforced hole through which to thread headphone wires. The zippered pocket is perfect for a financial card, cash, and keys. The lightweight fabric makes it very comfortable to wear.

wristband-wallet

9. Wearable security wallets

Love ‘em or hate ‘em. Wearable security wallets tend to sit close to the skin. This can be an aggravation for many travellers, especially in warm climates. The secret to travelling with security wallets is not to treat them as a purse or wallet. Treat them as a walking safe, accessed in private if and when necessary.

A security waist wallet is my preferred under-clothing security wallet. It feels more comfortable and more secure than those designed to be worn around the leg, neck, or shoulder.

My favourite is the PacSafe RFID Safe 100 , an RFID-blocking travel waist wallet. It has a moisture-proof liner and breathable backing with anti-odour treatment. A handy internal pocket snugly accommodates a financial card. One of the wallet’s best features is that each one of the two zippers has a snap-shut lock that takes a little effort to open. My first purchase was one in grey but it developed a soiled and grimy look after several years of use. I now have one in black.

This type of waist wallet sits comfortably in the small of the back, out of sight under a shirt, tucked under a waistband. Most of the time, I’m unaware of its existence. This wasn’t the case with a neck wallet purchased for a winter trip to Rome several years ago. It was adequate for that trip tucked under layers of winter clothing. But, for travel to warmer climates, the neck string was exposed, it was uncomfortable against my neck, and was visible under summer clothing.

PortaPocket has a selection of bands and portable pockets of different sizes that can be worn around the waist, arm, or leg. Some attach using Velcro, but I feel more secure wearing those with belt-loop style mountings.

portapocket-detachable-pockets

There’s a good chance a wallet that can be attached to the inside of clothing out of sight is out of reach of pickpockets. Especially if it has an attachment point to pin or clip it to clothing or hardware sewn into a pocket or purse.

My favourite is the FurArt Slim Minimalist Wallet with several attractive features. Its RFID-blocking capabilities protect identity and financial cards, and two of the six card slots each has a finger groove for pushing cards out easily. Two of the slots are side pockets, ideal for banknotes. A feature rarely found in a wallet is a D-ring for tethering the wallet to an attachment point in a purse or pocket. It measures 8 x 11.7 x 0.6 cm (3.15 x 4.6 x 0.25 in) and weighs 31 g (1.1 oz).

One of the best features of the Lewis N Clark Clip Stash is that it can be attached to a waistband or sock and worn inside clothing, hidden from view. Or it could be clipped to an inside pocket of a bag to prevent it from roaming free and being difficult to find. The zippered pocket secures what’s placed inside, and the RFID-blocking capabilities protect identity and financial cards from electronic pickpocketing. The plastic clip is 5 cm (2 in) long and relatively sturdy. An adaptation can be made by attaching a small key ring to the zipper pull and tethering the Clip Stash to an attachment point inside a pocket or purse. It’s made of a nylon TravelDry fabric and weighs 20 g (0.7 oz).

A long zippered pocket on the inside of a security belt can keep cash secure. Mine has a plastic buckle that doesn’t trigger security alarms, and a long 18-inch zipper. It’s versatile enough to wear with trousers, shorts, and skorts. Most belts on the market are black, brown, grey, or camouflage. The Canadian company Silverfoot produces belts and other travel accessories in a variety of vibrant colours and designs. At Silverfoot, you’re bound to find something compatible with the dominant colours of your capsule wardrobe. And because it doesn’t look like all the other security belts on the market, it’s less likely to attract the attention of street thieves. It can be used to carry emergency or surplus cash, folded along the length to create six panels.

12. Securing luggage

Pickpockets prowl airports, transportation hubs, and connecting transit for newly arrived or soon-to-depart travellers. Most people can’t carry all their valuables on their person, making an unsecured bag a tantalizing target.

A padlock can be an effective deterrent. My favourite is a triple cable combination lock . The shorter cable connects the two sets of interlocking zippers of my standard carry on. The longer cable connects the zippers to the carrying handle or a stationary object. I can remove the longer cable when it’s not needed. Another attractive feature of my cable lock is that to date, it has fit all lockers I’ve encountered. An advantage of a combination lock is that there’s no key to worry about losing.

anti-pickpocket-double-cable-lock-on-bag

A lightweight cable used to be a discretionary item, but it now accompanies me on every trip. The turning point was when a flight from San Francisco to Halifax via Newark became a San Francisco – Houston – Toronto – Halifax diversion. That was when spending six overnight hours in the Houston airport became a simpler alternative to finding a hotel. How does one keep carry-on bags secure while nodding off? Attach a cable and lock to a belt, belt loop, and/or a fixed object. My lightweight metre-long cable is part of the Eagle Creek 3-dial TSA Lock and Cable set .

Another option is a retractable cable. The Pacsafe Retractable Cable Lock is easier to pack as it takes up less space and weighs the same as the Eagle Creek lock and cable combined (48 g / 1.7 oz). A lock and cable are handy for attaching a locked bag to a fixed object on a train or in a hotel or hostel.

Some bags have an integrated rain cover. If not, there are plenty of covers on the market that fit bags within a certain size range. For example, my Osprey Ultralight Raincover (medium) fits bags within the 30 to 40-litre range. It has a drawstring that cinches around and under the bag for a snug fit, offering protection against wet and dusty conditions. An added advantage is that it offers a barrier to pickpockets.

1 3. Securing a day bag

Several years ago, I bought the very comfortable and functional personal carry-on/daypack: Tom Bihn Synapse 19 . Today, I tend to travel with a packable daypack that can nest inside my main carry-on bag when I don’t want to deal with two bags. My favourite is the Osprey Ultralight Dry Stuff Pack .

Unfortunately, neither bag locks. However, adjacent zipper pulls can be joined with S-biner clips, stainless steel wire keychain cables , twist ties, safety pins, or a small lock.

anti-pickpocket-cable-on-daypack

My Hi-Vis Osprey Raincover offers a measure of protection from the prying fingers of pickpockets. This is an option on crowded public transportation or city streets where pickpockets are active. The XS size fits packs in the 10- to 20-litre range.

One of the many attractive features of the Synapse 19 (and other Tom Bihn bags) is the internal bag hardware: an O-ring in each of the five compartments.

Is it possible to attach plastic O-rings or D-rings to the internal seams of an existing bag with sewing tape? This adds an additional layer of security for tethering pouches containing more valuable items.

daypack-with-plastic-o-rings-added

Tom Bihn and Eagle Creek produce pouches with swivel clips. Travelon makes a set of packing envelopes with a small fabric loop on the side of each one. Other packing organizers have zipper pulls, hanging loops, carrying handles, key rings, carabiners, grommets, or drawstring. These all represent attachment points for tethering the organizer to something else.

Or check out Etsy for handmade packing organizers. Ask if it’s possible to have a built-in O-ring or cord for tethering to internal bag hardware.

anti-pickpocket-packing-organizers

One of my favourite commercially produced tethering tools is the key strap from Tom Bihn. One version has swivel clips at both ends. The other version has a swivel clip at one end and an O-ring at the other. Both versions come in two lengths: 8 in / 20 cm or 16 in / 40 cm. My handmade tethering straps are 6 in / 15 cm long with swivel clips at both ends. All are useful for attaching to internal bag hardware such as O-rings, D-rings, and key clips.

My new favourite tethering tool is a retractable coil with a lobster clasp at each end. The lobster clasp isn’t easy to release quickly so it’s more difficult for a pickpocket to be successful.

To access my belongings, a pickpocket would need to negotiate the hardware joining the zipper pulls. S/he would then need to open the zipper of the respective compartment. Then, s/he’d need to open a second zipper of the pouch or unclip the swivel clip attaching the pouch to the O-ring. I like to think this kind of obstacle course is a suitable deterrent to someone who needs to move quickly.

The other advantage of tethered packing organizers is that I don’t need to rummage through the cavernous expanse of the main compartment of my daypack to find what I need. It’s much easier and faster to put my hands on the respective pouch, usually by touch.

My favourite type of travel purse is one that can be worn from door to door, removed only at security screening when it can be packed out of sight inside another bag. My handmade version has served me well for many years but for my last trip (to Africa), I took the Tom Bihn Side Kick  that’s lightweight, packable, has several internal compartments, and five plastic O-rings for securing more valuable items.

purse-with-retractable-tether-straps

Everything of value was tethered to an O-ring. We were advised that phones are coveted by thieves in South Africa so I purchased a longer ( 8 in / 20 cm Patikil-brand coiled keychain ) for my phone that I could use without removing the retractable coil. When tethered to a corner O-ring, it was a simple matter of closing the zipper to conceal the contents of the purse from view when quickly consulting Google Maps or booking an Uber.

Other anti-pickpocket gear

Reader Marti Goldring described her ‘bra bank’ in a comment on an earlier version of this post. She graciously agreed to provide more details for this update.

Marti fashioned a leash for her Eagle Creek Silk Undercover Bra Stash . A loop at one end rests under the snap enclosure of the bra stash pocket, and the other end attaches to a bra strap. The pocket fits comfortably inside her sports bra between her breasts. It’s a perfect resting place hidden from sight. The extra security provided by the leash means that Marti can rest assured the pocket can’t come loose and fall without her knowledge.

anti-pickpocket-gear-bra-bank-on-leash

Pacsafe makes a bra pouch in a soft lingerie fabric with an adjustable strap for attaching to the centre or side of a bra.It can hold up to six financial cards, a key, and some cash.

Headwear with built-in zippered pockets, especially those that are hidden from view, might offer another option. There are caps with inside pockets . A scrunchie with a zippered pocket might be of interest to someone with long hair.

A scarf camera strap with a zippered pocket may be more comfortable than a regular camera strap and perform double duty  for storing a phone, cash, and extra memory card.

If an anti-theft backpack, travel bag, tote, or purse   holds any appeal, there are plenty on the market. Designed for travel, these bags have features such as cut-proof, steel-cable-reinforced shoulder straps, slash-proof fabric, RFID-blocking pockets, and locking zippers.

This was the situation for LeeAnna Pekel, a member of the Facebook group Girls Love Travel . LeeAnna purchased a Pacsafe CitySafe 200 for a trip to Paris. Here is her story, reproduced with permission:

“I’d read lots of posts on Girls Love Travel describing thefts from purses and pockets. I realize this happens to travelers, but I was naive in thinking ‘That’ll never happen to me.’ Luckily, I work with some amazing women, including an older woman named Suzy. Suzy has traveled the world and is never short of a story to share. When I told her I was taking my mom to Paris for the holidays, she started sharing pickpocket stories. She’s 65 years old so she had a lot of them. Her advice was to buy a purse produced by a company called Pacsafe. I researched my options, thinking it sounded like a good, but needless idea. I bought two — one for me, and one for my mom.

Fast forward to this morning. My mom and I got up bright and early at 5:30 am to go on a day-long tour outside of Paris. We stopped at the bank near our Airbnb apartment in Montmartre to withdraw some cash. I checked for cameras or a card reader, saw nothing and went ahead. While doing so, a woman walked into the ATM area, stood off to the side and looked out the window. She was watching me via the reflection. Thinking she wanted my PIN and didn’t get it, we left.

On the subway, a man who appeared to be homeless came up to us and started begging. He even touched me when I ignored him. I told him not to touch me but he kept hounding me. We ended up moving away out of fear. As we got off the subway, two younger men followed us. My mother, being older, was slower on the stairs and the men surrounded her — one in front and one in back. When I stopped, they walked past me and started speaking in rapid fire French. “Did you see that bag?” “I’ve never seen anything like it before!” “It’s impossible to do!”

Listening to Suzy and buying this bag saved us from a tag team of at least four pickpockets in Paris this morning. I highly recommend Pacsafe. They also have backpacks!”

Baggalini, Pacsafe and Travelon make a variety of anti-theft bags.

An emergency cash stash is for those occasions when you most need to put your hands on some cash. It’s based on a divide-and-conquer approach that results in never keeping travel cash (and financial cards) in one place. Doing so puts a traveller at a huge risk.

Creative suggestions abound. Most of them offer a host of options on how to hide cash from the prying fingers of pickpockets. Here are a some examples:

  • Place cash in a small zip-top baggie and insert it under the insole of your shoe. Or, place cash in a small pouch and pin it to the inside of a sock or the seam of trousers. Slip it into a slit in the hem or waistband of trousers.
  • Create a ‘pocket’ from a sock or pantyhose that can be attached to the inside of clothing with a safety pin.
  • Attach a canister ( CashStash ) on a key ring to internal bag hardware.
  • My handmade packing folder has a secret pocket in the base, hidden underneath a stack of clothes.

emergency-cash-stash-in-packing-folder

  • Create a DIY diversion safe by hiding cash in empty containers (e.g., dental floss, deodorant, lip balm, prescription bottle).
  • Check out commercial diversion safes. For example, there are plastic containers resembling lipstick , sunscreen diversion safes , and a Mennen Speed Stick with fake deodorant on top on the safe. A USB charger diversion safe could be stored in an electronics kit.
  • Might a water bottle with a hidden compartment be of interest?
  • Use duct tape (matching the internal colour of your bag) to tape a zip-top baggie containing cash to the base of the inside of your bag.
  • Tape a zip-top baggie with cash to the inside back cover of a small notebook or diary, or inside a first aid kit or comfort pack.
  • Use a phone cover with a slot to hide emergency money and/or a back-up financial card.
  • Insert cash in a slit in a sanitary napkin, or in a box of tampons or panty liners.

Once you’ve perfected your strategy, remember where you stashed your cash. For each place, choose a single undamaged note in a currency and denomination that will be easy to change. Protect notes with a zip-top craft bag or cling wrap if they’re likely to come in contact with tape, perspiration, moisture, or residue from the original product of a repurposed container.

Great tips! I have security pouch, too. It is not very stylish but I admit is useful. I am going to spend one week in London. I put separately my credit card and my ATM card. Just in case.. Best regards!

Kayy

These are very helpful suggestions for travelers to stay safe . My friend was almost a victim of pocket picking but he had his wallet on his belt . I have to try out the bra bank when I remember to wear a bra lol . I also love hiding money in unpredictable places .

Dominique Lombard

These are very practical tips! I’ll be traveling solo in South America for 10 months next year and I’ll certainly make use of many of the recommendations in this post.

Happy travels! Dominique

Hi Anne, I’m so happy I found your blog! I have been binge reading it and I’m learning so much! Like you, I am an avid cyclist and often travel solo, so I am always looking for redundant systems in case of emergency. I want to share something that I learned along the way. I have something that I call my “bra bank.” I have a satin pocket – the size of a credit card – with a snap closure. Mine is similar to the Eagle Creek Silk Undercover Bra Stash. My seamstress friend made a short elastic “leash” with and I slide the satin pocket on the elastic and attach the leash to my bra strap. Then I slip the pocket inside my sports bra between my breasts. There is a perfect little resting space for it in the center. It is comfortable to wear there, feels secure, and doesn’t show. If my primary ATM or credit card is stolen or damaged, I have back ups from a different financial institution “on hand.” 🙂 Keep blogging. You are fabulous!

Sarah

Thank you for this thorough and informative guide! I was very apprehensive about my upcoming trip to India and now I am at ease shopping for a vest ^_^

Moumita Mallick

This is such an awesome post and very helpful. I really don’t like to worry about anything when I’m travelling and worrying about money is the last thing I want to do. Thanks for this awesome tips.

Stephanie Lee

These are very helpful tips for anybody traveling abroad! Thanks for sharing! During the time of my travelling, i have had the habit of keeping anything valuable within 2 layers of protection. Like you keep your wallet in pocket of your back pack that was zipped inside another pocket that was also zipped… i hope that makes sense haha! https://qompanion.my/articles/items-stolen-from-travellers-on-holiday i also found this article when i was looking for information about this issue, hopefully it’s relevant!

Great tips. After catching a pickpocket with his hand in my pocket on the Brussels metro, I always take precautions. I like the D ring inside a pocket idea. To save sewing, I use a nappy safety pin and mini carabiniers with (military strength) parachute cord in dark colours as a tether, cut to required length with heat sealed cut ends. These can also be discretely looped around trouser belts or belt loops. Washing tablet drawstring mesh bags containing cash and cards can be hung inside trousers, again from a belt or safety pin inside your waistband.

UK brands Craghoppers and Rohan make brilliant travel clothes with hidden zippered pockets.

Mobile phones can be protected with locking/SIM change blocking software that sends SMS / email alerts with location, snapshot of user and remote erase functions.

Heather

This is so so helpful! Thank you for the share, I’ll definitely be using some of these tactics on our next trip to Barcelona!

Cecilia

These are all great ideas to prevent being pickpocketed. There are a few times during my travels where I was concerned about this very thing. I just kept my money in my bra and left everything else at home. These gear items would have been a good alternative!

Catherine

Thankfully I’ve never been targeted by pickpockets or lost anything that way. I love all these recommendations to stop pickpockets! I’d never heard of zippered socks before but that’s so clever!

Jen Nilsson

Wow! Nobody is going to be picking your pockets, that’s for sure! I consider myself a pretty wary traveler, but I still got my wallet stolen on the train from the airport to my hotel in Barcelona. I definitely wouldn’t have lost that wallet with all of these tips. Especially the socks! I had no idea there were socks with pockets and I’m a sock connoisseur! Thank you for these tips.

Deb

I’m super fortunate that I’ve never been targeted by pickpockets on my travels, but I’m always very cautious when I’m out and about. I love these tools to prevent theft. Who knew you could get socks and underwear with pockets??? I love the idea of pouches on clips and leashes too. I’ll definitely pick up some of these tools before my next trip. Thanks for the great guide!

Emma

So many pockets!!! And so many genius ways to fool pickpockets. Unfortunately I’ve been pickpocketed before and it’s not fun, especially on the first day of vacation as it forever leaves you with a sour taste about that place. I’ve been meaning to get one of those scarves! I am someone who always hides money when I travel, my emergency stash. I usually hide in the pages of books because I figure no-one will steal my boring holiday novel

The Checklist Chic

These are such great tips to prevent pick pockets! Thank you!

Krista

These are all great ideas I hadn’t thought of before! I really like the pockets in the underwear idea!

Shafinah

Absolutely lovin’ the bra bank! Nothing’s gonna get picked unnoticed with this one 😅 I’d say that’s probably the best of the lot!

Marina

I only use a security pouch and always have my rain cover on my backpack but you have some amazing tips! Thank you 🙂

Sandra Whitmore

This is such a complete list of products. Amazing. Many years ago when traveling in Italy with another couple, they both were attacked on separate days. By luck, we were not, but I certainly invested in a few anti-pickpocket products that I still use.

Coni

This is so clever! We should always have something to deter pick-pocketers. Most will not be “hunting” for a victim, but just acting if they see the opportunity, like a phone being carried in the pants’ back pocket. I also love the advice on keeping an emergency stash somewhere unusual. Not even if the robber has all the time in the world to look for money, they’ll look in a deodorant case 🙂

MagicandBliss

Clever stuff! Thanks for sharing these. Will look into buying if I can find in the region where I live.

william rose

Anne, it is a quality blog. I travel a lot more, and this blog is complete. You write for me just like something advising your loved one.

Linda

To consider in hidden pocket clothing, I recently saw Tuck Top multi-pocket t-shirts at a local craft fair. I bought one and it is very comfortable. I’m looking forward to using it for travel. They are online at TuckTop.ca.

Lin

I found about them from your reply and bought one. I wore it at work with my pocketless pants, and they were perfect! Can’t wait to take it on my next trip. It’s very comfortable (though snug).

Jon D. Kelley

As a man, I tend to travel lighter – and as prior military personnel (who essentially lived out of his duffel bag for six years,) I can travel very light, indeed. (I went to New Zealand for a month completely with carry-on – one laptop bag and a medium backpack.)

One habit I stuck with after I got out was to wear BDU pants – the hip and thigh pockets have button flaps. If I don’t put my wallet in my left front pocket (in my left hand, for high-risk areas,) I keep it in my left hip pocket, with the flap buttoned. And I keep a dummy wallet in my right pocket, also buttoned in, just to confuse pickpockets. The loose fit of the BDUs and the internal bag pockets (as opposed to the patch pockets on blue jeans) help to conceal the contours of the wallet(s) anyhow.

That’s not necessarily 100%, but paying close attention to the signals of your body and your intuition will often pay off. In Chicago on the El, the car was filing up, I stood up to give an old man my seat (before I became disabled myself,) and I became a straphanger. Some sketcy fella grabbed the strap behind me – all sensors went on as an alarm went off in my head. I squelched the alarm (it would distract me from the sensors,) and waited.

I felt just the slightest tug at my right hip pocket (wrong side, pal…) so I whipped my right hand back and grabbed him by the wrist. Then twisted his arm as I turned around to face him. “You have one /and/ /only/ /one/ opportunity to get out of this without injury. What were you doing with my pocket?” He didn’t answer, and that wasn’t acceptable. So, I dislocated his shouder for him.

Oddly, I didn’t have any more trouble over the following three days I was in Chicago…

P^cubed ‘Pick-Pocket Proof’ Pants: For the Security-Conscious Adventure Traveler

Spend any time traveling and you’ll quickly learn that pickpocketing is a very real threat in many parts of the world (Colombia is even alleged to have a formal school for those looking to hone their craft ).

Vagabondish is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn a small affiliate commission. Read our disclosure .

Clothing Arts is looking to put a dent in that business with the release of their P^cubed Pick-Pocket Proof Pants . When designing these pants, their goal was simple: construct the most durable, most comfortable, most “bulletproof” (no, not literally) pair of pants possible.

Given that most adventure-minded travelers beat the holy hell out of their clothing, this was obviously a tall order. So how do they stack up?

Clothing Arts P^cubed Pick-Pocket Proof Travel Pants

First, a bit about the P^cubed Pants in the manufacturer’s own words:

Mid-Weight 25% Nylon 75% Cotton Canvas – Feels and Wears like Cotton with the 10lb Tearing Strength of Nylon – its Bomb Proof! Advanced Dual Action DuPontâ„¢ Teflon® fabric protector – Repel Oil/Water & Release Stains. Select Your Level of Security – the Function of 4 Money-Belts Right at Your Fingertips! Side Cargo – Expandable Double Thick Double Secure Cut-Resistant Cargo Pockets

And this brief video explains things a bit further:

Construction

Straight out of the box, it’s obvious that a lot of care went into making these pants. The material is very heavy duty – almost like a pair of Carhartt work pants.

Clothing Arts notes the pockets are cut-resistant and the fabric is double-thick with extra durable stitching/thread – in their words “bomb proof”. It’s also wrinkle, rain and stain resistant – a real plus for adventure travelers.

Adam from Clothing Arts warned me: “From one traveler to another – you might not ever take them off … maybe to wash once in a while!”. And he’s right – the material is soft and comfortable, but with a rugged “I could go canyoning in these” feel.

If, like me, you’re used to a below-the-waist fit (as is the case with many jeans today), note that these pants sit properly right on the waist.

Clothing Arts P^Cubed Pick-Pocket Proof Travel Pants

Design & Security

The security features built into these pants are so cleverly hidden that, the first time I put them on, I had to do some serious digging to find all the pockets. Even some of the pockets have pockets. The rear left pocket, for example, features a zipper and button enclosure and inside that is a hidden, zippered passport and money pocket. It’s almost impossible to spot even if you know it’s there.

This makes life all the more difficult for pickpockets, while guaranteeing that you have plenty of places to stash your travel essentials. Other nice storage features include a rear cargo pocket that expands to fit most average-sized guidebooks, concealed front smartphone pockets, and a removable bottle holder pocket so you’ll always have water close at hand.

Bottom Line

There’s a lot to like about the P^cubed Pick-Pocket Proof pants – they’re extremely durable, well designed, guaranteed and feature-rich. Sure, you can buy two pairs of well made cargo pants for the price of these. But don’t let the higher price point scare you off. We’ve always been of the mindset that it’s worth paying a little more for better gear that can often last indefinitely.

Pricing & Availability

Available now in green, grey or black directly from ClothingArts.com for $109.95.

I love the hidden passport pocket. I am so paranoid about where I put mine.

Review – “Pick-Pocket Proof Pants” From Clothing Arts

Update Feb 9, 2020: I still love my “Pick-Pocket Proof Pants” From Clothing Arts .  Clothing Arts had some problems where they had problems fulfilling the demand for their product. I don’t want to penalize the company for things they have already fixed. I have trimmed the comments that happened before 2018 as these are no longer relevant. If you do look at the comments, note that there seem to be more complaints in 2018 and far fewer by 2019. Chris Christensen AmateurTraveler.com If you have some concerns about Clothing Arts you might checkout the travel pants from PraNa .

I don’t like to carry cash when I travel. These days you can generally get by with an ATM card and a credit card, but this hotel in Costa Rica was different. We were purchasing a 3-day package from them with two rooms and a rafting trip and so I found myself heading to Central America carrying $800 in cash. It sounds like a perfect opportunity to try out a pair of Clothing Arts pants that claim to be “Pick-Pocket Proof”.

Clothing Arts sent me a pair of pants to review (gratis) some time ago but I had been putting it off until I had a good opportunity. To be honest I am a blue jeans kind of guy. I work in high tech so even dressing up for work just means a pair of jeans. But jeans can be a bit impractical for travel. If you get them wet they take forever to dry, they don’t have enough pockets and they take up a lot of room.

These pants do ride come up a bit higher than jeans so if you have a middle-age spread like I do you may need to add some extra inches to the waist as I did.

pickpocket proof pants from Clothing Arts

My first surprise with the Pick-Pocket Proof Pants had nothing to do with theft protection. They were actually very comfortable. I had chosen the Adventure Pants vs the Business Pants. I wanted some cargo pockets for passports, boarding passes or electronics. They have a nice brushed twill feel and a crisp “man about the world” appearance.

My second surprise was that the fabric has been treated with Teflon to repel stains and liquids. I should have read this on the website but discovered it the old fashion way on the plane through my own clumsiness. Of course, I still need to find matching travel shirts that will repel Diet Coke, but one step at a time.

I was successfully not pickpocketed but can’t honestly say that it was because of the pants. I am not sure any pants are truly pick-pocket proof vs pick-pocket resistant. These pants have side pockets that zip up and then can be protected by a buttoned flap that goes over the opening. It does mean that you can’t stand around with your hands in your pockets as I am want to do, but with $800 in my pockets that was a small price to pay for a little peace of mind.

Just came back from Morocco and France for a month my only regret was that I bought only one pair of paint. I was looking for traveling Pockets paint for months. Could not find good quality one that has so many pockets and fit perfectly well. Discovered the website and decided To try to no regrets. Thanks a million.

So I’m just back from two weeks in India. I was only in terribly crowded places a few times. No known pickpocketing attempts. But whereever I went, I went with complete confidence, even riding “the locals,” albeit on a holiday. The pants wore and performed well, and I was pleased by their dirt and stain resistance. Thanks Clothing Arts, good work. On to Portugal for my 70th birthday in March, and then never to travel internationally again!

' src=

I’ve purchased three items from Clothing Arts – two cargo long pants and one cargo shorts.

They fit great and have a lot of pockets and secret sections within those pockets. Some of the pick-pocket proofing is a bit over done and makes the pants/pockets pretty difficult to use and live with.

I probably won’t purchase them again and with an especial annoyance that it can take 6 months to get them delivered. It’s 2019 for God sakes. They have given me all kinds of excuses and explanations but the bottom line is, they’re nice but not good enough to wait that long.

' src=

I travel quite a bit and have purchased and worn another/competitor’s products including a pair of travel pants, a shirt and a jacket and thought I would give Clothing Arts a try. The competitor’s pants have lots of pockets, but have a drawstring waist and when carrying a cell phone, wallet, etc., they tend to fall down even with the string tied tight.

Clothing Arts pants seemed like a great alternative until I searched for reviews and found this site and I will be passing on Clothing Arts.

The owner’s response of 9/6/18 does not hold water considering the continued business practice of taking a customer’s money and not sending the product until months later.

Honesty is the best policy and I will not do business with a company that does not operate that way.

Thank you all for giving the rest of us a heads up on this company!

' src=

Yeah, a draw string does not seem like the best idea in travel pants.

I ordered a pair of Pick-pocket Proof Adventure Pants and two travel shirts. I was disappointed with the quality of the items, so I called the company to obtain a return shipping label. They refused to pay for return shipping, and I was transferred to a “manager.” I complained further about the merchandise quality and their unwillingness to pay for return shipping. The manager’s response was to argue about the clothing (something about how many pairs of pants they have sold), and then he threatened me, stating that if I wrote a negative review, they may not refund my money. I know that I should intimidate more easily.

Clothing Arts provided an unprofessional customer experience. Poor quality clothing. Awful customer service. Bad manners.

Buyer beware.

*** Response to Jay ***

Hi… I’m the owner of the company who makes these pants and would like to directly to respond to Jay. He called and spoke to me personally. He threatened to leave a negative review if we “DID NOT” provide him with a return label. I told him that he can do what he wants. The pants he received were returned to us for length issues and inspected by my lead garment designer to be a 30″ inseam. He insists they are not and this review is the result. I informed him that I was giving him personal attention and know what I am talking about regarding apparel considering the 150,000 pants we have walking the world. Long story short, we were dealing with shipping 100’s of pants that day and wished him safe travels.

This is why Amazon is weeding out poorly run local and other mail order businesses. Service Service Service

Sounds like this business should be avoided!

' src=

Well, God bless the internet. I was getting ready to order numerous articles for the family for our upcoming vacation and decided to scan for a review or two on the company. They do have a fantastic website . . . but wow. In light of the laundry list of negative comments I will be moving on.

' src=

Be careful basing any purchase decision on the reviews on clothing arts website. They didn’t publish mine. It was overall positive but I recommended they add a few inches to the fly zipper. On $120 pants they shouldn’t be cutting 50cents off the mfg cost on that item. Makes them hard to use without undoing and lowering the pants.

Chris Christensen

Glad to hear at least that it was overall positive. I don’t remember noticing any issues with zipper length on the pants I have.

This is the worst online store I have ever experienced. I ordered an item two months ago and waited weeks for it to arrive. After contacting customer service several times and receiving excuses, I finally got the clothing item and was not satisfied with the fabric and the style. The waist was too tight, the legs extremely baggy. The fabric is not light for travel. The waist and pockets were too bulky obviously because of so many pockets. I am sure if you would put your phone, wallet, passport etc, the pants would weigh too much ……I returned them, paid for the shipping and have yet to receive a refund. I have sent them proof and tracking that the item was received at their “warehouse” and they state they never it received it………………………… This saga has lasted too long. I have never had such a bad experience on online shopping. If you plan to buy any item with Clothing Arts, be prepared for inefficient service and plan 6 months in advance. Hopefully you will receive the item(s) Good Luck . You may be much better off shopping at REI.

I like the fit and finish of these pickproof adventure trousers and shorts. However, I hate the long delays between ordering and getting them. My last order took a little more than 4 months to fill. That said, every time I have contacted Clothing Arts I have been answered promptly, professionally, and by someone who seems to care (usually Katrina P). The company has offered to send other colors etc. to help speed the process and have kept me informed as to times for expected deliveries and even on delays. I really like the products but for me, it is the service that will ensure I will be a repeat customer. I do hope they can get their supply line/production in order since this is no longer a start-up company they should streamline their process and get products out the door much faster!

I placed my order for 3 pairs of pants and my credit card was charged on Feb. 7, 2019, with an expected ship date of Feb. 28. After receiving nothing by early March, I contacted the company. They shipped one pair of pants on March 5. The pants are okay. As of April 1, 29019, I still have not received the other 2 pairs of pants and the company doesn’t answer the phone and hasn’t returned my voice mails. My advice: stay away.

' src=

Ordered the pants on 2/8 with expected ship date 2/15. Credit card charged immediately, but pants didn’t arrive until the end of March. I didn’t like the material (thin, wrinkly, and very hot) so returned them last week. Still haven’t gotten my money back. Very poor way to do business – hold onto customers money forever. Would NOT do business with them again. again.

I have an update. The company said they would cancel my long-delayed order. They promised to reverse the charge on my credit card and said this can take up to 5 business days. Fingers crossed. (They said the pants may be available in mid-April, but after already waiting almost two months, I’m not going to chance it. I’ll look elsewhere for travel pants.)

Same here – should’ve searched the Internet before ordering, it seems I’ve also been ripped off. Bought their “Pick-Pocket Proof® Convertible Travel Pants” late January (credit card was charged a few moments after placing the order), with expected delivery for 2/28; date passed with no news; on 3/15 received a pre-shipment notification, since then stuck at the “Shipping Label Created, USPS Awaiting Item” stage. Avoid Clothing Arts.

I ordered these for my husband as a Christmas gift-2018. It is April 2019 and they are still stringing me along…production back-up, in transit, clearing customs….the bottom line is that they do not deliver. These guys are clever. They send you a tracking number and then when the items don’t ship they claim they have not left the warehouse. “Thank you for reaching out. Your Convertible Travel Pants are part of a pre-shipment. A pre-shipment notification simply notifies you that your item will be arriving in our warehouse shortly, and will then be on its way to you. They are clearing customs over the weekend, arriving at our warehouse, and shipping out Monday. Tracking Number (Pre-Shipment): XXXXXXXXXXXX I recommend checking back on the tracking on early next week, for the most up to date status. If the tracking is still on “pre-shipment”, that simply means it has not left our warehouse. ” BOGUS COMPANY!!! DO NOT ORDER FROM THEM.

Response to Marcello & Jean George:

Your Convertible Travel Pants have all shipped out to everyone now and will arrive at your door tomorrow or Monday. We hope you enjoy traveling with them for many years to come. These were among 800 pants that all shipped the same day.

Stopped pick-pocket #115 in Paris (second in a row in the city) was also published yesterday as well. With over 130,000 pants in the world now, travelers are stopping pick-pockets each week now. We have two more testimonials to publish as well…

Pants were returned 2 weeks ago, still no refund. They’ve had my money for 3 months now. If no refund by the end of the week, I’ll file a chargeback with my CC company.

Please avoid this company. (1) Pants shipped after the date promised. (2) Pants fit poorly. I requested a refund and returned the product. This still had to be disputed with my credit card company to get the credit. A month after receiving the credit the company billed my account for the pants again. Yes, the pants I returned and they put back into inventory. Sort of an oxymoron: selling pickpocket pants while picking pockets.

Response to Neil and Tristan:

The returns department is a manual process and we suggest contacting us at our info@ email address over the phone at 646.422.9222

Please reach out to us directly as we can help you out.

' src=

Ordered the end of January with expected delivery 2 weeks later, based on their web site and emails. Pants didn’t arrive until the end of March. Didn’t like the fit or material, so I returned them. Took almost 3 weeks to get my refund.

Looking at earlier reviews, I see a pattern. This is a company I would not buy from again.

I ordered my black travel pants back in June or July and waited over five months for them because I wanted black.Because they were having a problem getting black, they offered me one of their other color. The pants were worth the wait. I ordered them for a two-week trip to Israel. I wore them every day from March 23 through April 7.Yes, for 16 days. They do, indeed, dry quickly. They do, indeed, keep items secure. (I kept my passport and credit card in one pocket, without removing them, for the entire time.) The design is so well thought-out and executed that I was comfortable walking, sitting, going through the waters of Hezekiah’s Tunnel, going up and down stairs, standing in a waterfall, and eating dinner. To say I am pleased is an understatement. While I traveled, I was not encumbered with trying to keep up with documents, money, lipstick, maps, notebook, and pen, because there was a pocket for each. Also, I felt that I was well dressed for dinner at the hotel. (Some commenters found the sizing unusual; however, my experience is that the sizing is “right on.” I wear a petite 4,and the extra waist measurement was easily fixed by the tabs.) The several times I contacted “Clothing Arts” I always received a prompt reply, and when I called them three times, I found it easy to reach them and pleasant to talk with them. I am promoting the pants and will be ordering another pair before long. Gratefully, Dian Coppin

Charged my card in mid March, still haven’t received pants as of April 19th. After I complained, they finally called me back and said they get 1000 pairs of pants a week, but have only 5 people doing the shipping.

Adam Rapp - owner CA

Response to Daniel:

I actually took your call on Friday as I was helping out our service team during a high period of call volume.

You had already received your Business Travel Shirt which was listed as in stock at the time and did ship right away. I personally wear them all the time and hope you’re a fan as well.

The pants shipped 4/19 and were part of the 4/15 pre-order group. The delivery containing your order arrived earlier this week and my team ships on a first in first out basis.

We hope you enjoy your new secure pockets for many years to come.

Interesting fact: Last week was our biggest shipping week ever with 2000+ pants shipped by our 5 person shipping team.

Well darn, now I’m worried. Pre-ordered a pair on 25 Mar with an expected delivery of 15 April. Email with tracking number arrived giving me a delivery of 24 April. Went to the FedEx site on 24 April and my order hasn’t been shipped. Sent them an email so I’m hopeful they’ll respond with an update. If not, I’ll ask for my order to be canceled and money refunded.

John Martin, Dewey Az. I ordered 2 pair of PPP Pants on April 1st and on a separate order, same day a PPP jeans. I adjusted my order to the colors they had in stock, not the colors I really wanted. I received a tracking # on April 15th ( 2 weeks later) I went to the PO in my town to check on the tracking # and was told a shipping form was filled out by Clothing Arts on 4/15 but as of today 4/24 they have not been delivered to USPS.I called Clothing Arts and was told 1 pair should go out on Tuesday to be delivered to my PO by Thursday or Friday. I leave for Peru, Columbia & Mexico City on May 4th. That is cutting it to close for me and the remaining 2 pair of pants won’t arrive till after I get back from the trip !I have cancelled all orders and do not intend to ever deal with Clothing Arts again. I probably should have looked at the customer reviews more closely.

Please contact us directly, you will receive an update on your order from the service team.

Response to John T:

Your pants will be arriving over the weekend with our new delivery and ship right out the door. You have received the pre-shipment notice as we prepare all of the labels for the delivery.

Respone to John M.:

Your pants had a 4/30 pre-order date and we added you to the first shipping group when we processed all of the labels, just like John T. above. Had you not canceled your order, you would have received the two pants in time for your travels.

I wish I had seen this site before I ordered. I ordered three items, shirt, adventure pants and jeans, in February with an expected delivery in 2-3 weeks. I thought perfect to meet my schedule for a trip to Spain. What arrived was only the shirt. Didn’t like it. Its safety feature is nothing more than a zipper breast picket, so not a good value for the cost. Only when I requested a refund did I get a status on the rest of my order… April. I needed the Items for my trip in March. Ugh! Then a follow up email saying early May. Now its May, received the adventure pants and the jeans status is changed to the end of May. For the adventure lants I ordered “grey” colored pants, but what I received is a olive green. Definitely not the color in the picture. I wrote to the company requesting a replacement in the correct color and then I found this web site and find the exact same complaint by a previous review… “and they are not the correct color. The tag states grey but they are green… I put the pants up beside a pair of grey Under Armour pants and grey Eddie Bauer pants and the Clothing Arts pants are green.” Ditto for me comparing to other pants I have that are grey. Its been 1 day since my email so time will tell. For me the fit is good, the quality seems good and the pick pocket system is ok except as noted below, but the colour I received is not grey and not like the picture.

I also have a similar complaint as a previous review about the rear pockets. The web site shows a picture of the rear pocket system but does not inform you that its not the same for both right and left pockets. Totally misleading. Only the left rear pocket has the inner zipper pocket, not the right. I’m right handed, I want the inner pocket on the right to reach with my right hand. The implication from the picture is all pockets have the same features.

I will update when I hear back about the grey vs green and when I finally receive the jeans. So far I really want to like the products, but the issues are disuading me… I havent received items on time, and so far 2 of 3 items are not what was expected. I’m not going to say “dont buy” but the company has several things they need to improve: 1) be forthright BEFORE you order of the actual delivery schedule; 2) provide detail pictures of EVERY one of the safety features on EVERY pocket with CAPTIONS in EVERY picture of feature and pocket location; 3) Provide accurate detailed LARGE size pictures of the colors of every item, with a every item shown against a reference garment color, and show a photo of the full line up of colors all in the same photo, not just tiny separate select boxes; 4) live up to the promised delivery schedule or otherwise automatically and immediately provide a refund; and 5) provide for hassle free returns no matter what the reason and you pay the shipping. The customer is always right, because without customers you do not have a business… They will shop elsewhere.

Response to Lawrence:

Demand for our pants are selling out the productions ahead of their delivery. Each month 4000 pants are shipped to us. We list the “expected” pre-order dates online and can be subject to change based on how the production is going. With 40,000+ pants shipped in the last year, we do our best for every traveler who upgrades to our apparel.

Sorry to hear you are unhappy with the color and features. There are 5 triple secure and 6 double secure pockets. The photos represent a close-up of them and there is a full feature list below the images. This lists that there is 1 hidden triple secure rear zipper in the pants.

Regarding the color, our Grey has a lot of Green / Brown tones to it. There are many shades of Grey and it is our most popular color by a wide margin.

Contrary to most of the other comments, my experience was outstanding.

First of all, I contacted the company via email in regards to availability & delivery. Although each email received the typical automatic immediate “received your email” notice, it was nevertheless followed by an appropriate & timely response.

Secondly, I was particularly impressed with candor & thoughtfulness of the Service Manager, Stefany. She not only informed me as to the present lack of availability of the Adventure Travel Pants in my size & color, but also reasonably forecasted the approximate date they would be in stock.

Based upon the information provided, I ordered the pants and received them within the predicted timeframe.

As a seasoned traveler & having experienced theft some time ago in Rome, I am delighted with the quality & functionality of the Pick-Pocket Proof Adventure Pants.

Thanks Ted, so glad you had a good experience!

I bought two pairs, and only received one pair. Returned the pair, and awaiting credit moths later. The quality was light weight, not substantial…made in China. Honestly, totally a marketing ploy. I have bought better quality at Walmart for less than $20. Clothing Arts is spending more money on marketing than quality. Save your money and visit Walmart, as I have prior to Eastern Europe trip.

Jon, that’s odd. The pants I got were not at all lightweight. If I don’t bring them on a trip always, it is because there have too much heft.

Adam - Owner CA

Response to Ted:

So glad you have had a good experience with us. The vast majority of our customers do have a positive one.

Response to Jon:

Our pants are the absolute highest quality travelwear ever made. The material is a 4 season, water/stain resistant, mid-weight 100% Nylon canvas made specifically for us to take you wherever your travels lead. There are over 150,000 pairs of our pants on travelers around the world.

It did take quite awhile to get my adventure pants. However, I loved them for my two week trip to Peru. They were worn every day and still did not look dirty by the end of the trip. Very comfortable to wear. I use suspenders which makes the pants even more comfortable. They worked fine on my climb to Machu Picchu and to a couple of day treks to elevations around 14,000 ft.

Glad to hear it Don.

This is my first time visiting this website (and will be my last.) It is sad that a few disgruntled customers (out of 150,000+) try to bring down a “one of a kind” company. I’ve placed three orders with Clothing Arts and each time I received the order when I expected it, all being exceptional quality and exactly what I wanted. I called each time to get the approximate date and Clothing Arts was spot on. I wasn’t sure of the colors represented on their website so I called and they immediately sent me swatches of the color/material I was interested. I been to 46 countries in the last several years and always take my Clothing Arts with me. I’m getting ready to order a Cubed Jacket for an upcoming Christmas Market cruise on the Rhine river. Good Job to the owners, managers and especially the folks answering the phones at Clothing Arts. Once again, I will call them to get an estimate on shipping.

Bob, it has never been my desire nor interest to “take down” Clothing Arts. My experience with them as I stated was positive. But not everyone’s has been.

' src=

Even tho it states ships in 2 days and delivers in 5 beware as somewhere it also says that may ship by….and its a month later… too late for me so cancelled

Response to Fred:

We list our pre-order dates on the product page, shopping cart, and the confirmation email you receive. US shipping will take 2-3 days once items come into the warehouse for pre-order items or for those items listed “In Stock” online.

If you do have a pending travel, our team will do their very best to get you pair of pants in time for your trip.

I ordered the shorts well before a European trip and the security made me so much more comfortable on tours and traveling in crowds that they were the only shorts I wore even though I had packed other shorts to wear. We were warned by a tour guide of theft issues and did not experience any attempts that were defeated but the peace of mind was worth it and the shorts fit well and looked good.

I do like the peace of mind I get when I wear mine also Jim 🙂

Received my pair. My experience was this: at the time of ordering delivery date was 6/30/2019, this was fine with me. 6/28 I received “Pre-shipment notification” with USPS tracking number included. By 7/05 USPS status was still showing “Label created” making me a little nervous as my trip was approaching. Quick Google search brought me to this site and prompted me to contact the manufacturer on 07/08. Received reply that same day, saying that my shipment will go out as soon as possible, on 07/09 USPS was showing “In Transit” and on 7/10 I’ve received my package. I like the pants, size seems to be exactly as expected and while there were delays – manufacturer resolved things in a reasonable way.

Glad to hear Andrew!

' src=

In Mid-March 2019 I ordered a pair of the travel jeans along with the business travel pants. The business pants finally arrived 2 weeks ago after many delays.

No such luck with the jeans. Every time I contact customer service I get an excuse along the lines that it’s delayed because it’s a new product that’s having issues but it should arrive in their warehouse by the middle of the next month, which now makes the ETA 9/15. Problem for me is that my trip is scheduled for 9/16, so I won’t have along with me the pants that I ordered and paid for a whole six months in advance!

I’ve been more than patient up to this point but this is utterly ridiculous and completely unacceptable.

Designing, producing and shipping a batch of jeans is not f-ing rocket science.

Oh, and you’ve got to love the 5 Star review that the jeans get on the CA website from someone that bought a pair of different pants 5 years ago.

One more thing:

Has ANYONE received a pair of the travel jeans?

Response to Robert:

Travel Jeans are a new product and the first-ever run in production now. We worked with a mill to create a new type of denim specifically for this line. It is a highly technical Coolmax / Cotton / Poly / Modal / Lycra blend. It is real science to create new types of fibers from scratch and this is an amazing material.

This is the first production of the jeans and they will ship out to everyone once initial production is approved at the factory. I leave next week to watch the work myself, as I do with all new products.

We have sent out a few preview samples to test the fit of the jeans. If you would contact us directly, we can work to get you a pair in time for your travel.

Hi Adam. Thank you for your prompt response, and your offer to get me a pair before my trip. I truly appreciate it.

I’ll contact you directly tomorrow.

Something I should add is, as I mentioned before, I did finally receive the business travel pants. My initial impression is that the material, fit, and styling are quite nice. I like that the hidden pocket is perfect size for a passport. I will feel very secure carrying my valuables in them. Well done!

I will post a fuller user review upon my return. Hopefully a review of the jeans too, as they are the ones I wanted most for the trip.

I ordered a jacket from Clothing Arts in April 2019. I was called in August 2019 with notification that the jacket will not be delivered until November, ALMOST 7 MONTHS LATER. Reasons stated for the delay are excessive demand and improvement in fabric. (For my viewpoint, it does not matter how good the jacket may be if it cannot be delivered in sufficient time.)

' src=

I just received my pair of travel pants and they fit really well. I love the 34″ length as I am 5’11”, and I like that they are not low-cut; they come nearly to my waist. I’m looking forward to “road-testing” them on a big trip in a few weeks.

Recently returned from a Land-Cruise sojourn (Budapest-Vienna-Prague-Dresden-Berlin-Copenhagen-Stockholm-Helsinki-St Petersburg-Tallinn-Oslo) and were repeated warned by the tour guide of specific hot areas for pickpockets. Nowadays they even pose as tourists and are prevalent in the packed Hermitage Museum.

I safely carried my passport, money, credit cards & smartphone through all sites, located in selected strategic areas of my Clothing Arts Pickpocket-Proof pants. I knew they were safe because even I had some difficulty removing certain items when I wanted.

A day at home prior to the trip was used to evaluate usage of the pants for safety & also quick access. The variable functionality of the Pickpocket-Proof pants is amazing. The fit was very comfortable & the usage wear was phenomenal.

Thanks Clothing Arts!!

Ordered , got part of order , waiting on pants . For over 2 months now . Get a email , ship next week , then nothing . No shipped , no tracking , no pants . These people are unbelievable, never dealt with a company like this in my life, are an absolute joke . Would find something elsewhere , they charge your card when order , whole amount send part , then nothing on remaining order . Would not recommend unless , want to wait over 2 months plus to maybe get your order. Never again , live and learn . Need to have a big warning sign / label on their ads . Consider this REVEIW a warning about . Sad way to operate a company .

Response to G:

All of our pants, until we increase our production capacity to meet the demand for them, are on pre-order. We make 4000 pants right now per month and 6000 starting next month. Our service team will update you as they arrive from production and ship out.

You received a pre-shipment email. This means your pants are the next to ship out. We send this out to allow you time to adjust your order and for us to process and sort the 1000+ labels for each delivery.

I received my women’s travel pants a couple of days ago. Was pleased with the fit – I thought I might have ordered small, but they aren’t. I counted 12 pockets, which I hadn’t expected. In the morning, I put my passport and a typical days worth of foreign currency, separated into different areas, in the pockets and wore them for the full day. ( That’s when I discovered the 13th pocket.) Yes, they came 2 months after ordering, but that was stated at the time of ordering. Yes, my credit card was charged on ordering, not on shipping, but in my experience that’s standard practice for internet orders. When I contacted customer service around the time the pants should have been shipped to check on their status, I had an immediate auto response and follow up from a customer service rep within 8 hours. I’ve been really pleased with my whole experience with Clothing Arts. I don’t know if there were growing pain problems that are behind them now, or if too many people expect off the rack instant gratification. I would definitely recommend ordering these!

Laura, it does seem to me that some of the problems we can see in the older comments here have been worked out and happen less often.

' src=

I ordered a pair in April. Was told would be here in May, June, July, Aug and still don’t have them. I suspect they need to get lots of orders so they can raise money to order pants from manufacturer. I would not order again unless you can wait six months. They charge your Acct when you order them

Response to Jim:

I have looked into your order and you have received your pre-shipment notice and your pants will be arriving with the next shipment.

It looks like size 42″ waist in Brown Adventure arrived in fewer pairs than expected in our last delivery so your pair will be arriving with our next delivery to the warehouse.

After reading these comments, I was apprehensive in ordering a pair, but not finding anything comparable I ordered a pair of the Adventure Travel Pants on 8/22. I received a receipt email, then further emails when shipped, and also when they were delivered today (9/5). 2 weeks – pretty good! I have tried them on and am delighted with the fit and comfort. They are light-weight and very comfortable. I ordered a size up after hearing about sizing issues, but they seem to be true-to-size – nothing my belt won’t be able to handle. Having been worried about time delays and sizing, I only ordered 1 pair to try and get them ahead of an international trip – I’m going to order my 2nd pair tonight, with full confidence that I will have a couple of good-looking, comfortable travel pants that will secure my passport and wallet while traveling. Whatever issues they may have had in the past seem to be worked out – Thank You Clothing Arts!

I ordered shirts for both a man and a woman at the end of June 2019. It took three months to receive the men’s shirt and Clothing Art has been putting me off this whole time. They now expect at the earliest mid October. So outrageous. There should be a note on their site indicating that one should plan ahead a minimum of four months for delivery. I ordered these items specifically for a trip. At least my husband has his but who knows when I will receive mine. Zero Stars for this company.

Respons to Carla:

We have great news and your shirt will be shipping out today.

Our service manager had informed you that your shirt will be coming in over the weekend. We hope that it arrives in time for your travel. Enjoy both of your new travel shirts for years to come.

I have read a lot of bad reviews about this company and was a little nervous about ordering from them, but I have got to tell you my experience with Jennifer from the company couldn’t have gone any better. I asked first if what I wanted was in stock and once she said yes, I placed my order, 17th of Oct a Wednesday and the order will be here Saturday, Oct 19th. Can’t get any better than that. Now the pants aren’t cheap and I hope I like them and they fit well but that’s a story for another day.

Stay away from this company unless you want to wait an eternity for your items. I order a pair of there jeans in December 2018 and now almost a year later I have received nothing. No communications. And to boot they have all my money. This has to be the most unprofessional company I have ever dealt with. To small for there volume of business. This company would get negative stars from me. I am now going to a local TV station as they said they would like to do a report about this. Will do followup later

Response to Mike:

Our jeans a brand new product for us and are still in process and once they are perfect, we will release them. There was a 4-5 month pre-order at the time you purchased them and we have run into a number of new issues that were not expected with them along the way.

New machines needed to be ordered to sew the heavyweight highly-technical stretch denim these pants use which pushed our timetables once. The second was the wash finishing on them which has become quite technical as well since we are adding a DWR (durable water repellant) finish to them. They will be finished up and shipping soon. Most folks have been quite understanding as they are an innovative, new item, and you are welcome to cancel your order at any time.

Amazing, Thank you so much Clothing Arts. The pants fit great and they work even better! No one is pick pocketing anything out of these. You guys are the very best. From Rome, Athens, Pisa, Florence, Barcelona and London.

After getting my passport and wallet swiped I ordered a pair of Clothing Arts cargo pants as soon as I returned to the US knowing that I would be traveling again soon. My order arrived right on time. These are complicated garments to make and I am impressed by the quality. I would not be comfortable traveling around Central America without these pants.

So glad to hear G. It does seem like complaints of delays are… mostly… a thing of the past

' src=

My order arrived within a few days. I am thrilled with the quality and functionality. They are much better than I expected. I will definitely purchase additional pants.

' src=

I ordered two pairs of the Pick-Pocket Proof Adventure Travel Pants (different waist sizes, knowing that at least one pair would have to be returned). Given many negative reviews here, I braced for a big hassle, but placed the order anyway after receiving an email from C.A. stating that the pants were in stock. I received the pants in a timely manner.

I love the idea of these pants, but the fit on both pairs wasn’t good for me so I needed to return both pairs.

The return went smoothly. I emailed them first to let them know the pants were being returned and subsequently gave them my tracking number and estimated date of delivery. The credit appeared on my CC account two days after the return was received by C.A.

So, for me the items didn’t fit well but I had no issues with delays, communication with C.A., returns or anything else.

I read through all the reviews and it made me nervous about ordering a pair of these pants from clothing arts, but I’m traveling to NYC and really want something reliable so I went ahead and placed the order. That sucks that so many people had bad experiences waiting for their orders, but mine came right away. I think it was about 3-4 days. I was also very pleased to find that the pants fit as expected. The front pockets are definitely pick-pocket proof. The cargo and back pockets are not. I plan to add a strip of velcro to those to help the level of resistance. Overall I think if you travel a lot they would be worth their $100 price tag.

Bill, most of the bad experiences are in the past. The more recent reviews, like yours, seem to be better.

I like it when folks come together and share opinions. Great website, keep it up!

I was nervous after I read through the reviews. I am going to Africa next month and really wanted the pick-pocket proof pants. I was totally impressed! I placed a phone order for two pairs of women’s travel pants on February 4th. The pants arrived today, February 6th. I love the them. They fit perfectly. Will definitely order again

Clothing Arts shorts and pants provide solid resistance to pick pockets. However, the fabric used (nylon) in the business travel pants is unacceptable. The material has no substance such that the pants look baggy and wrinkled — the appearance is not all “business-like.” I have department store brand pants that hold a professional look much better and at a much lower price. The fabric used in the shorts is somewhat better because it has a bit more substance, though the shorts do not dry as fast and as well as other nylon camping shorts. I do not intend to purchase any other items from Clothing Arts — their products do not match all their claims.

Hi Dale … Glad you’re a fan of the pick-pocket resistance of the pants. Travelers wearing them have now stopped 170+ pick-pockets red-handed around the world. All of our men’s pants use the same nylon which is now worn by 200,000+ travelers. There is no difference between the shorts and pants you have from us. The material in wrinkle-resistant and will keep you looking good and secure on and off the road. If you are comparing nylon to permanent press cotton pants at retail, you will find a difference in fabric thickness, also in dry-time which can be days for cotton when washed in a sink and hung dry and just hours for nylon.

The customer service for this company is beyond poor! On two separate occasions, I was forced to to cancel orders which could not be fulfilled after waiting months. Each time, the company (after long delays) contacted and assured me the the order would be fulfilled by a certain date only to fail to deliver as promised.

When ordering the items, there was no indication that the products ordered were not in stock or not even produced! There were B.S. excuses that there were delays because of the pockets and then the color. You name it!

Do not waste your time with these unprofessional jokers.

– Response to Rob –

Hi Rob… we list all pre-order (back-ordered) items online. Those dates are listed in the product details and dynamical changes based on color / size selected. As deliveries arrive, they are all filled. We have typically use commercial airlines to fly our products in. With what is going on in the world today, shipments are taking longer to arrive to our warehouse and we are working with our suppliers to find alternatives. The next shipment will be 3000 pairs of pants and is expected over the weekend which would likely have filled your order.

' src=

Michael Braun

How do I start? Is this a company in the business of protecting you from pick-pockets or are they themselves the pick-pockets? I still hope to hear something about the order I placed two months ago. After payment was immediate withdrawn from my bank account and not a word from them since, the title internet scam artists comes to mind.Thankfully I didn’t place a larger order.I hate to think I am the only sucker here.

On October 6, 2019 I placed an order for Clothing Arts new Travel Jeans, with an expected delivery of Nov 15, 2019. Well on April 17 (I’m fairly patient, but really) I cancelled the order as it appears the jeans will never arrive. I’m still waiting on my “it will be credited to your account in 3-5 business days” refund. I’ve spent a lot of money with this company, but it looks like that doesn’t count for anything.

– Response to Michael & Kevin –

Due to the global shutdown in cargo from where we produce, our most recent planned deliveries have been delayed. Our production is based in India and the country has been shutdown since mid-March. Many of our styles have experienced a delay due to conditions outside our control.

The good news is that supply chains are reopening and we expect our shipments to start arriving again shortly. Our first shipment containing nearly 5000 items of various styles is expect in the next week or two.

Refund was received on May 4.

-Response to Kevin-

We do have Graphite Explorer Jeans in stock for immediate shipment if you would like to try that color as it was completed before the shutdown in India. The Blue Explorer Jeans have been in process for quite some time as our fabric is brand a new type of denim and took longer to work with than expected. They were coming off the production line before the shutdown at production and will begin shipping to us once the factory reopens and pants start shipping to us once again.

The Graphite color is at our warehouse and can ship right away for you.

I ordered a pair of pants on February 6, 2020. They were shipped on February 27, 2020. They did not fit and I returned them on March 3, 2020. I have confirmation of delivery to Clothing Arts by UPS on March 10 2020, received by Frank (inside delivery). Still no refund of my $116.95 fro this product.

The clothing I ordered arrived today. It is top quality! I look forward to wearing these items on future trips. I wish to retract the less than flattering comments I made about this company, in a previous post. I just wish they would better keep customers informed on reasons for extended delays on delivery of orders.

' src=

I ordered two pairs of the Adventure pants February 25th. supposedly for a March 15 shipping date. When they didn’t arrive I spoke to a Customer Rep who said they would ship the end of April, so I left the order standing and did not cancel, as she offered. They did not arrive. I’ve since left two emails and one voice message with no reply. Where is order #1111860?

– Response to Nelson –

Hey, we have great news for you and your order will be shipping today or tomorrow. We received our most recent delivery from production today containing 5000+ items and your order will go right out the door. We hope you enjoy them at home and abroad as soon as possible.

' src=

These pickpocket-proof pants are really good for crowded places. These reviews are well serving for the correct audience.

' src=

I ordered two pair of pants early this year. One pair showed up and they were too big. That was nobody’s fault, they just fit bigger then others that I have had in the same size. I thought the other pair would come shipped separately, but after nothing showed up I wrote and asked what had happened. I got an email notifying me that because of the corona virus they could not accept returns and would notify me when they were able to do so. OK, I can live with that, and the virus certainly isn’t their fault. But I asked about the second pair and asked if they could send me the correct size. They told me to wait. A month later I asked again if they could just send me the correct size for the second pair. I got a snotty email back telling me that they could not send me the correct size, but if I wanted a second pair they could send me another of the too-big ones to complete the order. I thought that was totally out of line, and told them to go ahead and send me the second pair of the wrong size, and then when they could accept returns I would send them both back and they could replace them with the correct size. Finally they figured out some other place to return them, and allowed me to return the too-big ones. Finally three months later I got the two pair of the correct size. They fit well and I am happy with them. I hope to be able to travel overseas soon and use them, as I have had my pockets picked twice in Italy. I wrote and told them that I was happy with the pants but I thought it was inappropriate for them to send me a snotty email offering to send me the wrong size again. I got a reply telling me that it was the fault of the corona virus that the shipment took so long. I have no complaint about taking a long time to fill the order. I understand that, but I am amazed that their customer service people either can’t figure out what they did wrong or have no interest in doing so. I would certainly never buy anything else from them again.

' src=

I am considering buying a pair of the pickpocket proof Convertible pants and concerned about delivery and paying before they ship. Most other companies you are invoiced when it ships. Why are you terms different. It appears to be you are not the manufactured, is that correct? Where and what country are these pants manufactured? What guarantee do I have on lead times? Do you publish lead times ?

– Response To Gene –

Hi Gene, we have a number of styles in stock right now and more arriving each week. If we are sold out, we will list the expected pre-order date for the item arriving to our warehouse on the website and in your order confirmation. Freight is now moving regularly between our production and warehouse, following a brief shutdown due to the virus, and orders are being filled as quickly as possible. Please contact us directly via our info@ email address and we can get you get set up with a pair of our pants.

' src=

Like everyone else, I had a TERRIBLE experience with Clothing Arts. I ordered three pairs of travel pants. The ship date came and went. They never came. I called SIX TIMES to get help. No answer. I left voice mails- no return calls. I went on the chat feature of the website (during business hours)- no one there. I ended up doing a credit card dispute and got my money back.

This company appears to be either already bankrupt, or close to it. Most businesses get an inventory loan and buy inventory in advance of sales. Not these guys. If you buy anything from them, you WILL BE SORRY. I just contacted the state Attorney General and asked them to open a criminal investigation into this ripoff company.

– Response To Kenneth –

My team will be reaching out to you tomorrow. From my logs, our service team did leave you a return voicemail regarding your order which is expected to arrive shortly. The 7/15 preorder group in certain sizes experienced a delay of a few days at the factory in finishing and missed one shipment cycle. We are getting deliveries every week now, and they will give you the details tomorrow.

As a followup, Adam Rapp sent me an email stating he had refunded by money. I will be looking for another source for travel pants.

-Response To Kenneth-

Our service team is all working remotely due to covid and responds to phone calls and emails as quickly as possible. Since you mentioned a dispute, I went ahead and refunded your order. The pants would have shipped out next week for you. Safe travels.

These pick-pocket proof pants are so necessary. As the thieves are getting worst day by day.

' src=

Roger Van Der Moolen

Does anyone know if this place is still in business? It seems like their service was horrible but are they even open now?

They contacted me in January and were still around.

-Response to Roger Van Der Moolen-

Hi Roger… we are open and have operated through the pandemic. There is nothing in our service system with your name on it, so please email us at info [at] clothingarts.com and we can help you out.

' src=

The idea – fantastic. The execution – meh. The sales experience – boo hiss. Great idea and would probably go a long way to thwart thieves. The jeans were especially thin and may not last long, yet to be determined. Even after several washings rubbing fingers on the jeans leaves blue dye on your fingers and nails. The sales experience – it took forever to get these. They probably wait for enough orders then manufacture a batch. Would I buy them again? No.

-Response to stephen-

Hi Stephen… glad you’re a fan of the ideas. The jeans are made using highly technical 5 fiber denim which needs to be washed in cold water. If you have washed it in warm/hot water you can get some color releasing on the indigo (blue) color. Please contact our service team and we will help to fix the issue.

' src=

Nancy Brown

BEWARE the reviews on their site. If you don’t rate them highly, they don’t put them up.

I thought their pants were well made, comfortable, dried quickly and wrinkle free. I didn’t like that my phone didn’t fit in the side pocket and if I put it in the front pocket it was uncomfortable when I sat.

The review was never posted.

-Response To Nancy Brown-

Hi Nancy… sorry to hear about the site issue. We do not see a review under your name. We have 3 other Nancys in the system. Please contact our service team or re-submit your review. Glad you like the pants overall, pockets on women’s pants have any number of design limitations, which is why you don’t see them on many styles. The newer, taller phones will not fit in the cargo pocket completely, or you would have a giant cargo pocket that would not look all the great. They will fit in the front secure pocket and you will likely want to remove that when sitting as anything large object in your front pocket will not sit very well.

On May 25, 2021: Ordered two pairs pants. $211.92 Pants arrived at my home in Florida in a timely fashion. Quality was fine but need one size smaller in the waist. Returned the pants to the company with a note inside asking for pants one size smaller. It’s June 22, 2021. Company has my money but I still don’t have the pants. An international trip is coming up and would like to have them before I leave. Left two voice mail messages today at 646-422-9222 but just got a recorded message that included a statement about the company’s regular office hours. Hoping for an answer but not holding my breath. I see responses above from company owner, Adam Rapp. Congratulations, Adam on building a company that has sold so many clothing items. If you need some help in customer service and scaling up internationally, give me a call. Of course, I would be happy just to get my pants.

-Response to Craig Shelly-

Hi Craig… I’ve looked into your order and have some good news. Your pants have shipped from our warehouse and will be at your door shortly. Enjoy traveling with your new pants for many years to come.

Thanks for helping Adam. 🙂

ZERO customer service. I was trying to get a delivery time before I ordered which was not given. I emailed asking for a time so I could cancel if it would be after my trip. I was not responded too. I emailed to cancel and they claimed they received no inquiry from me. I pointed out that they did and included the original email. The response was quite sarcastic from Adam Rapp who is listed as the owner. I will copy and past below. I would never order from them again and have read multiple reviews about the inferiority of their products since. Any owner who would behave like this does not deserve anyones business. :

Hey Nate From the looks of that email, that is your order confirmation. The package with your shorts is out for delivery and will be at your door today. They are awesome and we hope you enjoy all the secure pockets on your travels for many years to come. Safe Travels, Adam Rapp owner/designer ClothingArts.co

Received a mismarked pair of pants. Ordered 30X32, which is what hangtag said. Put them on and they fell off. Inside tag said 32X30. Hoping their customer service makes this right but I don’t want to have to pay for return shipping for company mistake. Particularly since I leave in a week and need the pants for travel.

Response to Nate: As we mentioned in your email to us before you threatened us with bad reviews, we did not receive a cancelation request prior to the request received on the out for delivery email. At that point, we can no longer cancel your order. We offer two speeds of shipment which are clearly listed on the website and at checkout. You selected the 3 to 5 business day service and your order was delivered in that timeframe.

Response to Patti: I have looked into your order and your replacement pants have already shipped. They are expected to arrive to you on Monday, in plenty of time for your upcoming travel.

Update to Sept. 15 comment. Clothing Arts responded to my email and voicemail about a mismarked pair of pants. They sent prepaid shipping label so I could return the pants and they were sending out another pair ahead of the return because my trip was coming up fast. I was told the pants would arrive in a couple of days. Owner also saw my previous comment on this site and asked me to update it with the resolution. I think that’s only fair, so I’m keeping you apprised of the situation. Mistakes happen. It’s the resolution that’s important. This one seems to be resolving well.

' src=

After reading multiple negative reviews about Clothing Arts, I was concerned that I wouldn’t receive my order in a timely manner, or that I would have issues with the quality. I am pleased to report that my order came quickly, it fits as expected, and I am pleased with the quality of the fabric and construction.

Lazaro Julian Milian

I have ordered about 10 pairs of various colors of these pants for me and my wife. Excellent quality, very comfortable, and the best pairs of pants I have ever had. Shipping is fairly standard (about 7-10 days). Excellent quality. I am a former U.S. Marine and have traveled to many foreign lands over 12 years of service. These pants do a great job of preventing pickpockets and love the military-style cargo pockets. Keep up the good work.

' src=

I ordered two pairs of pants – one pair of Business Travel pants and one pair of Adventure Travel pants. The good news – I received the pants within 4 days. The bad news – both pair of pants were way too large. I could put the pants on and take them off without undoing the buttons or zipper! The other really bad news is – Clothing Arts does not pay for return shipping even though I believe these pants are incorrectly sized. It makes no sense that the customer must pay for returns. Clothing Arts also does not allow customer comments at their website – that should have been a red flag for me. FYI – it cost me $20 to return 2 pair of pants!

Response to Dan: Sorry the pants didn’t work out for you. We have sold 300,000 pairs of pants and our pants are very true to size. The odds of both an Adventure & Business Pants being miss-sized is exceptionally low. You were likely one size smaller in pants size. Again, sorry they didn’t work out for you as you are clearly quite passionate about them. We do cover the cost to ship your exchanged pair of pants back to you if you had gone that route, thereby splitting the cost to get you the correct fitting pair of pants.

Mark Hartmann

– placed order – after a month, order still processing – sent email asking to cancel as they will not arrive in time for my trip – no response – tried calling, had to leave a message not impressed with these guys at all…..one man operation? –

Response to Mark: Looking into your order, it was a pre-order item that arrived over the weekend. There is a lead time for many of our items as we are in very high demand with the restart of travel. It was canceled at your direction via email. We answer all our phone calls, so we are unsure what happened there.

Mr. Rapp keeps apologizing for late orders – for years I now find out. I ordered pants weeks ago in the belief that the pants would arrive when the web site said they would. Wrong. It is a couple of days before a month-long foreign trip. The web site says they have shipped. The USPS tracking number says that they don’t have them registered in their system as yet. Very disappointed.

Response to Thomas:

Hi Thomas… tracking on your order shows delivery to your door tomorrow by 9pm. We do hope you enjoy your pants for many years to come.

Mel Latimer

I’ve ordered two pairs overseas early September, which were meant to be in stock on September 25th. I got the email the week before stating the stock should reach the warehouse in a week, and then nothing. I’ve checked since on my account and it still says pending, and that it means that they will ship when the next delivery comes (which also says should state when that is on the website). But when I check the website for my pants in my size it says ‘in stock’. It’s now two weeks since the 25th and I’ve had no updates in regards to my order. I’m absolutely hoping they fit, because given the comments here if they don’t fit right then returning them will be a complete ordeal.

Response to Mel:

Our delivery arrived last week, and the team worked on shipping as many orders as possible last week. Internationals need to all be individually inspected by the garment team, and that will be happening this week for all those orders. We do this to make sure that all pants shipped overseas match our specs before being packed and handed over to the couriers. Look for a shipping notification shortly.

Adam has kindly responded with an update that was indeed true – Not only did they send them shortly after, but sent them express, and I recieved them very quickly. Unfortunately despite following the size chart they were a size too large, but I believe this might just be to do with the fit of the pants and where they sit on your waist (they’re worn higher up), but I did follow the size chart to a t. I’ve had to return them for an exchange and this is being processed now (I’ve exchanged my two pairs of 14s for a size 12 and size 10 in case I lose some weight over the next year, as I sometimes fluctuate). Despite having to pay for return shipping the team have been great otherwise. I cannot fault them for their customer service. They got me in touch with someone on their design team who was able to suggest the correct size.

I appreciate that as a company they probably cannot afford to cover returns, and that there are many different body types, but I did follow the sizing and was a little disappointed that despite it being wrong I had to pay for shipping. But like I said, the quality of the pants and the customer service did outshine that for me. I still would recommend these pants and the company – they seem to be a really lovely bunch of people.

' src=

I see all these nice reviews, but based on my experience, I would not try to buy from this company again. I bought one pair which (even though I followed the sizing chart, like Mel) was too big on me. It cost nearly $10 to return them at the least expensive post office rate. It took nearly 3 weeks to get a refund, and that happened only because I called them. The refund did not include their shipping cost. So in the end I spent about $23 of my own money just to try on a pair of their pants. I would certainly not risk more money to try to find a pair that fits.

Response to Barry:

We have sold over 300,000 pairs of pants and our sizing is true to size. Selling as many pants as we do, sometimes there can be a mislabeled pair of pants sent out in to the world. The best way to deal with an issue is to contact us directly and we can inspect your pants once they arrive back to us. We can then send you a new pair and refund the return shipping. For menswear, if you have a question as to what size to order, measure you waist 1″ below the bellybutton and subtract 3″ as this will give you modern men’s vanity size. For womenswear, please email our service team and they will be able to ask our designer for her suggestion.

Placed order for Pick-Pocket Proof Explorer Travel® Chino Grey pants Jan 5, 2023. Web order status page on 5/27/23 still shows them as being processed, not even in pre-order status after almost 5 months. Oh, and they immediately charged my account. They may or may not have a good product, but they aren’t worth taking a chance if you want something in a reasonable time frame while they use your funds.

Response to Bruce:

It is always best to reach out to us directly. Your preorder group should have all been filled weeks ago, so there must be an issue somewhere. I’ll have the service team look into your order and contact you directly tomorrow.

Harry Flashman

Wow. What a crop-ton of negative reviews. I won’t be doing business this these folks and I will tell everyone I know.

It seems like Adam the Owner might be able to churn out a few more pairs of gray pants if he didn’t spend all his time deflecting neg reviews!

Response to Harry:

We’ve sold 400,000 pairs of pants to very happy customers around-the-world.

That’s quite a few pairs of gray pants we “churn out.”

Safe travels!

Clothing Arts seems to have trouble getting items to customers. I feel like I was strung along with dates my order would be available to ship…then it wasn’t for weeks afterwards. They should just be straight with customers. I don’t care how many pants they have shipped. The ones I ordered are the only ones I am concerned about and they were very late. Please be upfront with customers. Others here are right; Its about service.

' src=

Fred Wagner

I ordered my first pair of pants and I wish I had read the return/exchange criteria first. The size 36 I ordered were falling off of me so being true to size is not necessarily correct. I liked them enough to order a 34 but I then spent $15 or so to return the original order (after the fact they did nicely offer free return shipping, but too late). This should be the policy for a first time buyer. I have now waited 11 days (9 business) and no refund when 6-7 business days was promised. I do plan to contact them, but this inefficiency all the way around makes it difficult to recommend Clothing Arts to anyone.

We have a full-time service staff to help you with color choices and pre-order availability if the items are not in stock at the time of purchase. Please contact us if there is an issue your departure and we’ll work to get your setup in time for your travel.

Looks like you’ve been taken care of. Our pants generally run true to size. In most cases, if there is a variance, it will be smaller, and we very rarely find them to be larger than spec. So, in all likelihood, a 34 would have worked for you in our fit. The reason we don’t cover return shipping is that we do cover exchange shipping back to you, thereby splitting the cost to get you the correct-fitting pair of pants. You’ll then know your correct waist size next time you order. You are welcome to reach out to us, and we can get you the correct pants without further shipping costs.
