Bus timetable information can be accessed in a number of ways.

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) is part of the West Midlands Combined Authority and is responsible for providing printed timetable material at bus stops within the TfWM area, as well as real-time or timetabled departure information at display screens at stops or key interchange points.

Printed leaflets

Bus timetable information can be obtained as printed material from various Travelshops and other outlets.

The latest bus timetable information can be viewed and downloaded online from both the Transport for West Midlands website , as well as individual bus operators websites.

Other useful websites for obtaining timetable information are BusTimes , Traveline , and West Midlands Bus Timetables .

Please note that printed timetables either at bus stops or in leaflets can quickly go out of date, especially if timetable changes are made at short notice, or if timetables are only being adjusted for a short-term period, for example during school holidays when traffic levels are quieter.

Also, high levels of traffic congestion will cause services to be delayed, so your bus may not arrive at the times published.

If your bus stop or interchange has an information display, that will show you the estimated arrival of your bus.

Alternatively, if you have an internet-enabled smartphone or mobile tablet device, there are numerous apps you can utilise that will show you predicted or real-time bus arrival information for your stop.

Rail strikes – find out when West Midlands faces railway standstill as train drivers go on strike

Rail users are being warned of fresh disruption next week because of more strikes by train drivers in their long-running pay dispute.

travel west midlands 72

Services in the West Midlands will be virtually wiped out on Wednesday May 8 – and if you plan to travel further afield on other days then it is worth checking first.

Some parts of the country will have no services on strike days, while those that do run will start later and finish earlier than usual.

The Aslef union is embroiled in a near two-year long dispute, with no talks held for more than a year.

Passengers are being advised to check before they travel between Bank Holiday Monday, May 6, and Saturday May 11.

Here is a run down of the disruption:

72 Hours in Moscow

travel west midlands 72

That’s the only word that describes the beauty of Russia. Even today, you can see the richness and beauty of the Russian Empire throughout the country.

I visited Moscow and St. Petersburg in 2013 during the Spring Festival Holidays. A friend of mine was studying at Moscow University, and I didn’t want to waste the opportunity to have a personal tour guide.

Since I’ve been back in the U.S., I’ve been telling everyone Moscow is a place you must visit., I’ve given advice about traveling in Russia so many times that I think it’s time I write it down.

So, if you only have 72 hours in Moscow, what should you do?

First, you definitely need to find a place to settle in. One nice thing about Moscow is every place worth visiting is in or around the Red Square, so staying close to it is your best choice (especially if you don’t speak Russian, like me). However, the hotels are quite pricey there… I almost fainted when I saw the numbers. Luckily, my friend found a lovely and inexpensive motel in a young couple’s apartment building–the couple could say “hello,” “goodbye,” and “thank you” in 35 languages! Quite a few similar motels are located near the Red Square as cheaper options as well.

Once you settle in, visit is the Red Square! With Kremlin in the west, St. Basil’s Cathedral in the south, the State Historical Museum in the north, GUM Department Store in the east, and Lenin’s Mausoleum in the center, it holds enough attractions to fill your entire day. I recommend visiting Kremlin first, because it sometimes closes in the early afternoon. Every corner inside Kremlin (except Putin’s office building) is open to visitors, so there is always a lot to see. I recommend the Dormition Cathedral. I didn’t go inside St. Basil’s Cathedral, but its exterior is beautiful.

If you’re short on time, you can skip GUM. It’s just a big, modern shopping mall filled with fancy brands. I think your time would be better spent exploring the city’s fascinating history.

When the sun starts to set and if temperature allows, you can ice skate, drink, and socialize in the middle of the Red Square. In the summer, you can roller skate instead. Either way, it’s a great way to end your first day in Moscow.

On your next day, visit Arbat Street, a fantastic street filled with artsy shops selling hand-made crafts. Musicians play rare instruments, and artists paint pictures on literally anything they can find. Be sure to pick up a quality Russian nesting doll as a unique and beautiful souvenir.

Occasionally, the bookstores on the street sell old books for very cheap prices. Some of them are great classics; I bought a Russian version of “Peter Pan” (I can’t read it, but it looks lovely on my bookshelf).

When you get hungry, visit My My (pronounced “mu-mu” — you’ll find it easily because a big cow statue is in front of it). It’s a reasonably priced restaurant with the best Russian traditional food. I recommend the borscht.

Relax a bit before dinner at Cafe Pushkin. Near Arbat Street, Cafe Pushkin is a traditional but elegant Russian restaurant filled with history (it also has an old, hand-operated elevator!). It’s said the great author, Aleksandr Pushkin, used to dine at the restaurant, and some of the waiters can recite Pushkin’s poems in both Russian and English. Dinner will be a bit pricier, but it’s definitely worth it.

On your final day, visit Novodevichy Cemetery, the most famous cemetery in Moscow. It lies next to the southern wall of the Novodevichy Convent, which was built in the 16th century. Many great Russians are buried there, including Nikita Khrushchev, whose famous white-and-black grave is definitely worth visiting. The cemetery is beautiful both in the snowy winter and in the blossoming spring.

If you’re hesitant about visiting Russia because of the language barrier or the weather, don’t be! Nearly every worker speaks English, and Moscow is no colder than Madison. I fell in love with the Russian winter experience in Moscow, and I’m sure others will, too.

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.

Systema London Logo

A wealth of experience in many aspects of life, and committed to sharing their knowledge with you.

There is much more to life than combat. A warrior’s job is much bigger than fighting- it is the survival of his tribe: himself, his family, his country. We need to know about health, anatomy, physiology, nutrition, genetics, psychology, philosophy…  And of course, the martial arts!

This is how we started:

In the beginning of 2000, a few Londoners met at a Russian Martial Art seminar in the Midlands and got sufficiently curious to continue training on our own.

The more we trained, the more we realised the tremendous depth of the art we were studying.

With great support from Vladimir Vasiliev, we became a school in November 2000.

We realised that we needed to get more information, and organised our first seminar in 2001. Sergei Ozhereliev flew in from Moscow to dish out a few lumps. The training continued, with a few events hosted by us: Michael Ryabko, Vladimir Vasiliev, Valentin Vasiliev, Konstantin Komarov, Val Riazanov, Valentin Talanov were sharing their knowledge with us. We organised quite a few training trips to Russia, and regularly visited Toronto to train at the RMA HQ.

We continue to seek knowledge from a variety of sources, not all of them martial. We encountered and trained with some great healers. We studied anatomy and physiology, psychology and philosophy. We have a number of medical professionals training with us, as well as a few professional warriors.

We studied striking, escaping, floor work, weapons, we got bumps, cuts and bruises, and somehow more people joined the class… We realised that psychological preparation is as important as the technical arsenal. We noticed that Systema can be used every day on the street, in the office, at home… We applied Systema principles when skiing, playing guitar, dealing with injuries (our own, and others’). We applied the breathing techniques as we ran the marathons, and helped our wives during childbirth. We used Systema to ride horses, and to become friends with dogs. We applied it to negotiate with our bosses and co-workers, to talk our way out of the speeding tickets, and to diffuse the conflicts we saw brewing up at the parties. When we crashed the motorbikes, we rolled, and breathed, and walked away. We learned to recognise the signs of stress and fear, and we are getting better at dealing with them.

We all continue to learn from each other, and to help each other grow.

The question remains open- is Systema a science, or an art?

There are solid scientific principles behind what we do. And your Systema can be a science.

For me, it is definitely an art. An art where we travel the path of self development and awareness, where we aim to move away from patterns of behaviour and rigid structures, encourage the creativity in ourselves and every individual, where we try (not always successfully:-) to get away from competitiveness, and strive for a simple concept- getting to know ourselves, the world around us, and live our lives according to our system of values and beliefs.

Finally- I would like to thank all the people who supported us, challenged us, and encouraged us to think! 🙂

Best regards.

View when driving from Yelisovo airport to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

The first myth I want to disprove is that getting to Kamchatka is extremely costly. It’s not. Going between February and April, a return flight from Moscow can be had for 11,000 roubles (US$380 / £220). Not bad for 18 hours total flying time. In summer the flights are more expensive but still, if you book them a few months in advance, can be got for 16,000 roubles return.

It’s true, many people will tell you that March and April are the worst months to visit because the snow is starting to melt and everything’s a bit sloshy and dirty in settlements. On the other hand, these are great months for the independent traveller! During winter zimniki (temporary winter roads made of compacted snow or simply frozen river surfaces) open up all over Kamchatka, granting access to communities that in summer are totally isolated. Hitch hiking is possible right from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the very north of the peninsula. Alternatively, vehicles can be hired in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky from tour firms. Also in the winter or early spring months places can be reached that are away even from the zimniki, either by snowmobile or by the use of cross country skis. For example, Klyuchevskaya Sopka, Eurasia’s largest active volcano, can be accessed from the village of Klyuchi without the need even for a guide by a traveller with a pair of cross country skis. Bears do not wake up until mid-April so this is not a danger, but bears almost never attack anyone anyway.

The main disadvantages of winter travel in Kamchatka are that it is cold, there is no greenery and there are no bears, which some people come here especially to see.

The second myth I’d like to dispel is that travel around the peninsula requires hiring a helicopter. As mentioned above, in winter you can get almost anywhere by hitch hiking. I even hitched a lift with bear hunters on snowmobiles from their village to a reindeer herder encampment 100km away. In summer snowmobiles are replaced by horses, and transport is reduced from long distance ice-road journeys to irregular inter-settlement all-terrain vehicle trips. Hitch hiking is possible on these all-terrain vehicles though.

Throughout the year there are fairly expensive public helicopter flights to all settlements which are nevertheless much cheaper than hiring your own helicopter. There is also one permanent, year-round dirt road leading halfway up the peninsula. Some distance after the town of Milkovo, about 350km north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky , it forks. The right fork leads to Klyuchi , site of Eurasia’s largest active volcano, and further to the port town of Ust-Kamchatsk. The left fork leads to the indigenous Even villages of Anavgay and Esso. Daily buses go from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to Klyuchi , Anavgay and Esso, costing about 1000 roubles each way. In winter a zimnik passable by lorries heads north from Anavgay 36 hours to the otherwise isolated town of Palana. From Palana more zimniki head further north to yet more isolated settlements. From the peninsula’s very northernmost settlements there are even EXTREMELY irregular snowmobile and all-terrain vehicle connections with Magadan Oblast and Chukotka. Another zimnik, only passable by all-terrain vehicle, heads from Anavgay to the village of Ust-Khayryuzovo on Kamchatka’s west coast.
