Our Review of the Best 3D Wooden Travel World Maps

If you’re an avid traveller like us or just someone who appreciates world travel and geography, then you’ll LOVE these wooden world travel maps!

After seeing these wood maps pop up on Facebook a bazillion times, we finally decided to do some research and find the best one. Well, it turns out that the very first wooden world maps came from Enjoy the Wood , a company in Ukraine that got started with a successful Kickstarter campaign and has now patented the design.

After looking over the hundreds of five-star reviews, we decided to reach out and partner with them. First things first, we had to try one out ourselves, so they sent one to us and we made a video about putting the map together and about the memories of visiting 42 countries over the last 10 years. Not only was it a great way to look back on some incredible adventures, but it is such a beautiful world map to have on our wall. In fact, every single time we have people over for dinner or drinks, the map easily becomes the focal piece. Everyone stops at the couch to admire how beautiful it is, before starting to talk about where they’ve been, where we’ve been, or where they hope to go next. It really stands out.

If you’re like us, however, you’re probably looking for what the map looks like, how you put it on your wall, how it arrives, and more. So, in this article, we’re going to give you a step-by-step look into our 3D world map.

Unboxing the Wooden Map

Everything about our Enjoy the Wood World Map was done very well. The box is beautiful and it opens up nicely with lots of information and even a photo of the team in Ukraine. I really think that ever since Apple made packaging part of the experience, all industries have been following suit. This packaging felt snug and high-quality.

Putting the Wood Map on our Wall

In order to put the map on your wall properly, you’ll have to follow the instructions, which are quite simple. Basically, we started laying it out on the floor first, making sure that all the pieces were there before fitting them together like a puzzle. It’s quite surprising how many pieces they include and the craftsmanship that goes into it. For example, they even included little wooden pieces for small destinations like Hawaii, Cypress, and Corsica. We thought this was a really great touch. 

Once the map is laid out on the floor, you take the two stencils that are included in the box and mark out the upper left corner and the upper right corner of where the map will go on the wall. We measured out the distance between them with measuring tape and also measured from the ceiling to make sure we had them equal in distance. Then we placed the further left and right destinations, which happen to be Alaska and Russia. Once they’re up, it’s pretty easy to place the rest as you work your way from those two pieces. 

In our opinion, the hardest part of placing the wood map on the wall is sticking the double-sided tape to the back of each piece. It’s quite tedious and time-consuming to peel the backing off of the tape and then place it on the back of the map. However, the tape is very strong and it is very unlikely that a piece would ever come off. In fact, if you ever want to remove the map from your wall, they recommend using heat to make the tape softer. 

Another very cool feature of the Enjoy the Wood 3d Map is that they include Ocean names, wooden airplanes, boats, and even a compass that really adds to the beauty of the map. These used to be additional accessories but are now included with your purchase. Put them wherever you want!

World Map with Pins

Although the wooden world map is beautiful on its own, one of the key features is the world map pins, which allow you to pin the destinations you’ve been t0o. This is another well-done product from Enjoy the Wood. Each country has its own pin and you’ll also find pins from each Canadian province, each U.S state, and even the states of Australia. For us, this was the most time-consuming part of the process as we had to search through the 250+ pins to find the 42 countries we’ve been to as well as the 13 provinces and territories and a number of states from both the USA and Australia. Luckily, they include a little brochure with the names and flags of each country to make it easier to sort out. We learned a lot about flags that day! Some of them, like Palau, have no actual location on the map so we just stuck the pin in the wall at the approximate location. After all, Palau is very small!

Wood Map Sizes

With Enjoy the Wood, the 3D wood world maps come in three different sizes.

📍 M – 100 cm x 60 cm (39”x24″) 📍 L – 150 cm x 90 cm (59”x35″) 📍 XL – 200 cm x 120 cm (79”x47″) 📍 XXL – 300 cm x 175 cm (118”x69”)

We opted for the XL, which seems to be the perfect size for those looking to place it above their 3-seater couch. For those wanting to do an entire wall, you would likely want the XXL. If you don’t have the room for either, the Medium or Large will likely do the trick.

Different Colours for the World Maps

If you decide to buy a wood map, you’ll notice that there are different colours to choose from as well as different options for country names. If you don’t want the country names on the map, you can opt for the blank option, which won’t include any markings at all. If you choose a large map or bigger, you can choose to have the Basic version, which includes the names of countries AND Canadian provinces and territories, Australian states, and of course, all the states in the USA. If that’s still not enough, you can also choose the Prime version, which includes Antarctica!

For colours, we opted for multicolour as it looks so rich to us. However, maybe this won’t suit the colour scheme of your home. In that case, they also offer colours such as oak, terra, walnut, and nordik!

MAPS ARE EASY TO INSTAL

These Maps are first of all fun and easy to install. To assemble a map it takes just a few hours and what’s important is that placing one won’t damage your wall. You won’t need any special tools or equipment, as everything you need comes in the box. It is important to note there is no drilling needed. It comes with a special double-sticky tape, therefore the only thing you need to do is to simply stick it to the wall.

Want all the fun without any of the exertion? Fear not, you can enjoy the breathtaking views from these summits without breaking a sweat. Be it cable car, cog railway or hairpin-bend drive, there are all sorts of exciting ways to experience many of the world’s most stunning peaks.

Cimetta, Switzerland

Leave Locarno’s subtropical lakeside behind for a trio of transport experiences, culminating at the top of Cimetta. A precipitous funicular whisks you up from Locarno center to Orselina; then it’s all aboard the slick cable car to the first peak of Cardada. Lastly, clamber onto a chairlift for the final climb to Cimetta, 5,480 feet (1,670m) above sea level.

Mount Washington, New Hampshire, USA

At 6,288 feet (1,917m), Mount Washington is New Hampshire's highest peak, dominating a verdant valley. It’s also home to the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railway, in operation since 1869. Brightly colored steam-powered locomotives are supplemented by biodiesel trains. Both options make for a memorable, three-hour round trip.

Thick forest gives way to rough terrain as the train chugs along the 3.25-mile track, at a 37% gradient at certain points. At the summit, you’ll have an hour to walk around the Sherman Adams Visitor Center, with its Cog Railway Museum, and take hundreds of photos. Weather permitting, the 360-degree views embrace five states, Canada and the Atlantic. You’ll also spot the Mount Washington Observatory – tours can be arranged in advance.

Mount Srd, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Not quite soaring over Dubrovnik – at a mere 1,352 feet (412m) – Mount Srd still offers fantastic views. Board the cable car and whizz up in just a few minutes. Then take in the red roofs of the old town below, the forested island of Lokrum and the azure Adriatic stretching to the horizon. On a clear day, you can see almost 40 miles into the distance (telescopes are provided).

Machu Picchu, Peru

The journey from Poroy, eight miles west of Cusco, to Aguas Calientes (a short bus ride from the ruins) takes around three hours. Leaving the town behind, the train rises out of the valley and onto higher ground until the final, steep ascent through the forested mountainside. On reaching Machu Picchu, 7,972 feet (2,430m) above sea level, you’ll have one of the world’s best mountain train journeys under your belt.

Mont Blanc, France

Tackle a chunk of Western Europe’s highest peak (Mont Blanc towers over the Alps at 15,771 feet/4,807m) on France’s highest rack-and-pinion railway. In the summer months, the Tramway du Mont Blanc climbs all the way from St-Gervais-les-Bains to Nid d’Aigle, at 7,792 feet (2,375m). The one-hour ascent allows plenty of time to savor the views of lush pasture, snow-capped peaks and the Bionnassay glacier. From here on, you’ll need proper kit and determination to make the final climb to the top.

The Peak, Hong Kong

The Peak Tram is Asia’s oldest cable funicular, opening in 1888. It takes just eight minutes to climb the Peak’s 1,300 feet (396m). With almost vertical tracks, the extraordinarily steep ascent seems more of a modern marvel than the cluster of surrounding skyscrapers. An alternative route up is via the number 15 bus, which takes a more winding route to Peak Tower (pictured). There you’ll find a 360-degree viewing platform, stores and restaurants.

Snowdon, Wales

No visit to Snowdonia in Wales is complete without seeing the awe-inspiring Snowdon. At 3,560 feet (1,085m) it’s the highest summit in England and Wales. Thanks to the Snowdon Mountain Railway, this lofty peak is accessible to pretty much everyone. Book ahead to guarantee those staggering views across sheer, rugged ridges and beyond to the Isle of Man and Ireland.

Scale Snowdon aboard a masterful feat of engineering, constructed over 14 months in 1894 and running ever since (note it closes in winter). Impressively, three of the five Swiss-manufactured steam locomotives bought in 1895 are still in service today. Count your blessings that some alterations have been made since then – the original carriages were completely open to the elements.

Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa

Table Mountain looms over Cape Town, a 600-million-year-old icon of the city, country and continent. It’s an undeniable Capetonian rite of passage to scale its hulk, but resist the mountain’s siren call until the weather is fine and there’s no sign of the notorious ‘tablecloth’ of thick cloud. Once you get to the top, you don’t want anything spoiling the fabulous views.

You could lace up your boots, join a guided day hike and consider abseiling part of the return journey, but the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is a justifiably popular choice for many. Book in advance and opt for a quieter afternoon slot if the weather is behaving.

Rocky Mountains, Canada

You could cover the 141 miles of the Icefields Parkway, through the Rocky Mountains, in about four hours but that would be missing the point. Stretching from Lake Louise all the way to Jasper and often described as the world’s most spectacular road, it pays to slow down, pull over and take your time. Carving its way through the heart of the Rockies, the route is lined with towering peaks, turquoise glacial lakes and high-alpine glaciers.

There are many trails and viewpoints to seek out along the way. A popular destination is the Columbia Icefield, the largest icefield in the Rockies. If you have a head for heights, make for the Glacier Skywalk where you can gaze down on the Sunwapta Valley from a glass-floored observation platform that juts out over a 918-foot (280m) drop.

Pao de Acucar, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio isn’t a city short on symbols: the giant Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) statue atop Corcovado mountain; the celebrated beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema; and the singular peak of Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf Mountain) guarding the mouth of Guanabara Bay. Stand on top of the 1,299-feet (396m) high slopes of Sugarloaf Mountain to see the others in all their glory.

Make your ascent via two cable cars, the first connecting with Morro da Urca. Knock back the first dose of coastline views here, then it’s onwards in the second cable car to Pao de Acucar. From up here, there’s no doubt about it – Rio is a cidade maravilhosa (marvelous city), as the locals claim.

Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia, USA

Plan a dream road trip on the breathtaking Skyline Drive, a serpentine route that starts just 75 miles west of Washington DC and follows the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Within the Shenandoah National Park, a marvel whatever the season, the famous road features hairpins, bumps and blind turns. Only confident drivers need apply – but note that the speed limit is kept to 35 miles per hour to help avoid collisions with any passing white-tailed deer, bobcats or black bears.

The narrow, 105 mile-long Skyline Drive winds through the dramatic Shenandoah landscape with blankets of forest, wildflower meadows, and steep slopes and rocky peaks like Hawksbill and Old Rag. At each tight turn you’ll be grateful for the speed restrictions – there isn’t much room to maneuver on this 1930s-constructed thoroughfare. All the better for slowing down and absorbing the magnificent views.

Picos de Europa, Spain

The rather dinky cable car at Fuente De whisks passengers up the sheer cliffside of the southeastern Picos, to a jaw-dropping height of 5,980 feet (1,823m). Acclimatize after that speedy four-minute journey with gulps of fresh mountain air or a stiff cortado (coffee) at the El Cable cafe. The approach to the nearby, orange-tinged limestone mass of the Naranjo de Bulnes represents a challenge for many experienced climbers. The subterranean Funicular de Bulnes cuts down the journey time, climbing through the mountain to the otherwise inaccessible hamlet of Bulnes.

9 Places to See the Summer Olympics Without Setting Foot in Paris

You may have trouble finding accommodations or tickets to events in Paris, but other destinations around France are hosting sports like soccer, sailing, basketball and surfing.

For sports fans, Paris will be the center of the universe this summer — and with 15 million Olympic and Paralympic visitors expected, it will feel like it, with crowds and high prices. But Paris isn’t the only Olympic site in France: Nine destinations outside the metro region are also hosting events, giving travelers a way to catch some action without getting caught up in the crush.

In places like Bordeaux, Marseille and even Tahiti, you can watch top athletes compete in soccer, basketball, sailing and surfing. (Tickets have been added in batches, so if the ones you want aren’t available, keep checking the ticketing site, tickets.Paris2024.org . If all else fails, the official resale platform opens on May 15 .)

And when you’re not watching sports, you can take advantage of museums, parks, design centers, and fresh food and wine options. In Nantes, you can even ride a mechanical elephant.

Here are some ideas for planning your own alternative Olympic trip.

Basketball: July 27 to Aug. 4; tickets from 50 euros ($54).

Handball: Aug. 6 to 11, tickets from €45.

Start with a stroll around Vieux-Lille and a coffee in the Grande Place, taking in the colorful facades of this city near the Belgian border. Head over to the St.-Sauveur area to see the Art Deco belfry and exhibitions at Gare St.-Sauveur , a former train station. On Sundays, at the rambling Wazemmes market , about 400 vendors offer produce, fish, plants, fabrics, textiles and leather goods. Head out to Parc du Héron , east of the city, to see the LaM museum (€7), with works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Joan Miró. Lille is better known for beer than for wine, and the Brasserie Gobrecht offers brewery tours every Saturday (reservations recommended).

Soccer: July 24 to Aug. 2; tickets from €24.

Capital of a region best known for its wine, this small southwestern city sells local wine-walk maps at its tourist office. Stop by the Marché des Capucins , a local indoor market that also houses Bistro Poulette , a slightly chaotic and very delicious spot serving moules-frites, or mussels with fries. In the afternoon, check out the Bassins des Lumières (€15), the largest digital art center in the world, and the Cité du Vin (€21), which offers wine-tasting experiences. To wind down in a quiet wine bar, try Yarra , or for a cocktail, Symbiose . If you have time for side trips, spend a day in St.-Emilion, about 27 miles away, where you can sample great wines. Or check out the nearly 340-foot-high Dune du Pilat , the tallest sand dune in Europe — about 37 miles southwest of Bordeaux, near the beach town of Arcachon.

The street signs in Nantes are in both Breton and French, reflecting the city’s historical ties to Brittany. Start at Talensac Market for picnic supplies, especially radishes, local cheeses and strawberries. Pick up local delicacies like Gâteau Nantais (almond poundcake) and Far Breton (flan with Armanac-soaked prunes). Take your picnic lunch to the courtyard of the Château des Ducs de Bretagne , a medieval castle and museum (courtyard is free; museum is €9). On the Île de Nantes, a former shipyard has been transformed into a wild mechanical theme park. The Machines de l’Île mixes Jules Verne’s stories with Leonardo da Vinci’s designs in the form of a ridable mechanical elephant and sea creatures (€9.50 for the elephant ride or gallery visit). The Mémorial de l’Abolition de l’Esclavage (free) covers Nantes’s history as the most active slave-trading port in 18th-century France. The artists behind the glass-and-concrete memorial, Krzysztof Wodiczko and Julian Bonder , aimed to create “a metaphorical and emotional reminder of the primarily historical, but also very current, struggle for the abolition of slavery.”

Châteauroux

Shooting: July 27 to Aug. 5; tickets from €24.

The small city not far from the Loire Valley is named for Château Raoul , the 10th-century castle that’s now part of a local official’s private residence. The best view of the château is from the Gütersloh Bridge. Follow the “coulée verte” — or green corridor — along the banks of the Indre River, stopping by Parc de Belle-Isle , which has a lake for swimming, with kayaks and stand-up paddle boards to rent, as well as a beach, playgrounds and camping. The Franciscan Cordeliers Convent (free), which dates to the 13th century, today offers contemporary art exhibits and miles of gardens, and the Bertrand Museum (free), a former 18th-century townhouse, showcases diverse collections in each of its 26 rooms, including the plaster original of the Camille Claudel sculpture “Sakuntala.”

To stay: Au Lys Blanc (€138); Les Rives du Château (€210 for a two-bedroom apartment).

Lyon and St.-Étienne

Soccer: Lyon, July 24 to Aug. 9; tickets from €24. St.-Étienne, July 24 to 31; tickets from €24.

It will be easy to catch soccer matches in either Lyon or St.-Étienne, only an hour apart by train or car in east-central France. In Lyon, often called the gastronomic capital of France, visit the majestic Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica , then savor an ice cream at La Fabrique Givrée . Explore the city’s network of covered passageways, called traboules — originally for workers to transport textiles and later used during World War II by the French Resistance for clandestine meetings. Then climb up to the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse neighborhood, with its tiny streets, shops and views of Lyon below. On a clear day, you can even see Mont Blanc. The Lugdunum museum (€7) and the nearby Roman theater (€4) take visitors back to 43 B.C., when Lyon was known as Lugdunum, and La Maison des Canuts (€9.50), covers the city’s history as a capital of silk.

Between Lyon and St.-Étienne, Pilat Regional Natural Park offers more than 900 miles of rocky terrain for hiking and biking, culminating at the summit of 4,700-foot Crêt de la Perdrix , with views of the Alps and Massif Central range.

St.-Étienne, about 40 miles southwest of Lyon, is transforming its historical industrial identity into one of design and innovation. At the heart is the Cité du Design (€4.50), the former site of a weapons factory, which has served as a center for art and research since 2010. The complex, now a key economic force in the city, is open to the public year-round and hosts art and design exhibitions.

To stay in Lyon: Fourvière Hotel (€189); Hôtel du Théâtre (€323).

To stay in St.-Étienne: Le Parc 42 (€113); Le Golf Sauna (€269).

Sailing (including windsurfing, kitesurfing and more): July 28 to Aug. 8; tickets from €24.

This Mediterranean port city mixes urban grit and natural beauty. Start by visiting Le Panier, the village-like oldest part of the city. Try navettes , a traditional orange flower biscuit, and sample some sardines or panisses , traditional chickpea fries, on a sunny terrace. Detour through the touristy but pleasant Old Port on the way to Mucem (€11), the first major museum dedicated to Mediterranean civilization and cultures. Have a pick-me-up at Deep Coffee Roasters , a specialty roaster tucked away between touristy shops. At sunset, climb up to Cours Julien , a hip neighborhood with beautiful views for your apéro. Don’t miss the Cité Radieuse , a UNESCO-listed apartment complex that shows off the architect Le Corbusier’s Modernist mastery (you can stay at the hotel in it). And just southeast of the city, the Calanques , a series of small, narrow coves , offer miles of oceanside trails and rocky scrambles along turquoise water.

Summer is peak season in Nice, the queen city of the French Riviera, where the mountains meet the Mediterranean. Run, bike or in-line skate along the Promenade des Anglais , a four-mile seaside path. Then climb up to the Colline du Château , a rocky hill east of the promenade with views of Nice and even as far as the Alps. For a longer walk, follow the trails from Coco Beach to the Cap de Nice along the coves. Then head to Cours Saleya , a pedestrian section of the Old Town, with flower stands, antiques and local food like the socca , a chickpea pancake. The Musée de Préhistoire Terra Amata (€5), constructed on top of an excavation site, reveals what Nice was like up to 400,000 years ago. Or just enjoy one of Nice’s pebbled beaches in a lounge chair.

Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Surfing: July 27 to 31 ( events could shift through Aug. 4, depending on surf conditions); fan zones free.

For surfing’s second Olympics since its debut in Tokyo, the competition takes place far from mainland France in Tahiti, part of French Polynesia. Since the wave is offshore, there will be two ticket-free fan zones — Taharu’u Beach and Paofai Gardens — to watch the events on large screens. A third fan zone at PK0 beach in Teahupo’o will have free tickets but limited access. Tahiti offers white sands and turquoise lagoons in addition to near-perfect waves. For snorkeling, try the lagoon near Maui Beach , five miles from Teahupo’o. For black volcanic sands, head to Taharu’u Beach, about 20 miles northwest of Teahupo’o. About 45 miles from Teahupo’o, Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, with a population of about 26,000, offers a variety of local delicacies like poisson cru: raw fish with lime juice and coconut milk, served with rice. Sample local fare, including steak frites and skewered veal heart, from food trucks, called roulettes, at Place Vai’ete, on the waterfront, near the Papeete Market.

To stay: Kia Ora Lodge (€265, seven miles from Teahupo’o); Punatea Village (€73, six miles from Teahupo’o).
