Thrombolites in Yalgorup National Park – 1.5 Hours South of Perth CBD

Thrombolites (or living rocks) are easily seen from a short boardwalk and make for a great break in a from Perth to Margaret River road trip.

Also known as the Lake Clifton Thrombolites, these strange ‘out of this world’ structures are very curious. They are stunning in the early morning or sunset light!

Plus for little explorers, the science and history behind it can make a great lesson. The thrombolite-building micro-organisms are minuscule. They are impossible for the eye to see but they look like the earliest forms of life on earth. Scientists have used thrombolites to understand micro-organisms and understand the earliest forms of life on earth.

It is not known why the thrombolites form at Lake Clifton, but it is possibly because the lake is associated with small shoots of fresh groundwater that is high in calcium carbonate.

To get to Lake Clifton, you have to take the Old Coast Road by going through Mandurah (not the new Bypass).  Look for the turnoff 25km south of Mandurah.

If you feel like exploring a bit more there is a 5km, 2 hours return, easy to walk hiking trail around the edge of Lake Clifton.

Perth To Margaret River Places To Stop Bunbury

Bunbury – 2 Hours South of Perth CBD

One of Western Australia’s biggest regional centers, Bunbury, seems to be looked over in people’s rush to get to “Marg’s” (as Margaret River is affectionately known)! This is a mistake in our opinion as Bunbury has a lot to offer.

The Dolphin Center at Koombana Bay is a must-stop place on your way from Perth to Margaret River in the summer months. December to March has frequent visits from dolphins. Though, as they are wild dolphins the times, can’t be guaranteed. Check here for more information on the Dolphin Cruises in Bunbury .

If you love street art, Bunbury is filled with it. We had an enjoyable break in the drive going for a walk in this big, country town. Y Travel blog has covered their Top Things to do in Bunbury here.

Day One – Best of Margaret River Itinerary

9 am Depart Perth

As you drive south you will be on a major freeway to Bunbury, about 2 hours’ drive.

We recommend a stop at the Koombana Bay Dolphin Discovery Centre in the warmer months of the year as there is a chance to see local dolphins who visit in the mornings between 8 am and 12 noon. Keep in mind these are wild animals and no time can be guaranteed!

travel to margaret river from perth

From Bunbury continue to the delicious 3 Oceans for lunch. We’ve chosen it because it’s on the main highway and is just less than 3 hours driving from Perth. There are great lawns for the kids to run on, and some great wines to taste.

If beers are more to your taste, another option is the Cowramup Brewing Company. This is a family-owned Microbrewery with a wholesome menu featuring local produce. If you like to know what goes into your beer, they also offer a behind the scenes tour.

Or, if you have packed your lunch and are looking for an ice-cream as a treat, why not stop at Millers Ice Cream . They have a great playground and the kids liked milking the cows there!

3 Day Perth To Margaret River Itinerary, Cowaramup

Heading south with a full stomach you will be glad to get out of the car for a walk and enjoy the cows at Cowramup. Our kids love to pose with them, you can take as little as 20 minutes or much longer. If the kids need a little sugar fix, then head to the Candy Cow.

As it’s already been a long day, we recommend heading south and enjoying your accommodation.

Day 2 – Explore the Best South of Margaret River

Today you will head south of Margaret River.

The first stop is Hamelin Bay, a gorgeous white sand beach with a picture-perfect remainder of a jetty for some Insta perfect photos. Most famous for the Hamelin Bay stingrays, these friendly locals visit nearly every day in summer – usually in the early morning. They don’t like rough or windy weather which is why you are less likely to see them in winter.

We also enjoyed a walk up onto the cliffs above the jetty to enjoy spectacular views of this amazing coastline.

As I sit down to plan my road trip from Perth to Margaret River, a rush of excitement and anticipation courses through my veins. I can already imagine the stunning landscapes and picturesque routes that await me in this corner of Western Australia. It’s time to jump on an unforgettable adventure, immersing myself in the natural wonders and scenic beauty of the region. With a sense of joy and wonder, I take you along on this incredible journey, where every turn of the wheel brings me closer to new discoveries and cherished memories.

At the moment that I set off from Perth, the possibilities stretch out before me like an open road. One of the most popular and scenic routes is the Kwinana Freeway and Forrest Highway. Although it offers the quickest way to Margaret River, it doesn’t compromise on the breathtaking views. Driving through the expansive Jarrah forests, I’m surrounded by towering trees and a lush green canopy. The rolling hills and picturesque valleys provide a captivating backdrop as I make my way through charming country towns. It’s a journey that combines the convenience of efficiency with the enchantment of nature’s beauty.

For a more mesmerizing experience, I choose the South Western Highway. This route takes me through the majestic Darling Range, where forested hills and verdant valleys greet me at every turn. The vistas are simply awe-inspiring as if the landscape has been painted by an artist’s brush. I pause to soak in the panoramic views, allowing the tranquility of nature to wash over me. Along the way, I stumble upon historical gems like Pinjarra and Harvey, each with its own unique character and stories to tell. Exploring these towns becomes a delightful detour, as I indulge in the local culture and immerse myself in the region’s rich heritage.

For those who crave the allure of the coastline, the Bussell Highway offers an idyllic journey. Driving alongside the sparkling waters of the Indian Ocean, I’m treated to sweeping views of the rugged coastline. The crashing waves and salty breeze create a sense of serenity and freedom. Quaint beach towns like Busselton and Dunsborough beckon me to pause and enjoy their laid-back charm. I find myself strolling along the sandy shores, listening to the rhythm of the ocean and relishing the simplicity of life by the sea. Along this coastal route, I discover some of the finest wineries and breweries the region has to offer. Each tasting is a celebration of the local craftsmanship, as I savor the distinct flavors and indulge in the artistry of winemaking and brewing.

To drown myself in the epitome of scenic beauty, I opt for the enchanting Caves Road. This picturesque route takes me through a tapestry of landscapes that leave me in awe of nature’s wonders. The road winds through lush forests, where dappled sunlight filters through the dense canopy, creating a kaleidoscope of colors. Rolling hills carpeted in vibrant green seem to stretch to the horizon, evoking a sense of harmony and tranquility. As I approach the coast, the beauty of the beaches unfolds before my eyes. Pristine sands meet the crystal-clear waters of the ocean, inviting me to bask in their splendor. Along Caves Road, I encounter renowned wineries and gourmet food producers, showcasing the region’s culinary excellence. Each stop becomes a gastronomic delight, a symphony of flavors that tantalizes my taste buds and leaves me craving for more.

Regardless of the route I choose, one thing remains constant – the importance of savoring each moment and fully immersing myself in the experience. I remind myself to slow down, to embrace the journey as much as the destination. I take the time to explore local attractions, venture off the beaten path, and connect with the heart and soul of the region. It’s through these encounters that I truly understand the essence of Margaret River and its surrounding areas.

I find myself captivated by the warmth of the locals, their genuine hospitality leaving an indelible mark on my heart. Their stories intertwine with mine, creating a tapestry of memories that I will carry with me long after this journey ends. I engage in conversations with winemakers, learning about their craft and the deep passion that fuels their creations. I meander through vibrant farmers’ markets, savoring the abundance of fresh produce and indulging in the flavors of the region. Every interaction, every taste, becomes a chapter in my personal travelogue.

As I bid farewell to the breathtaking landscapes of Margaret River, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to have embarked on this extraordinary road trip, to have witnessed the beauty that this corner of the world has to offer. The memories I’ve made along the way, the sights and sounds that have imprinted themselves on my soul, will forever hold a special place in my heart.

As I make my way back to Perth, the memories of this incredible journey remain vivid in my mind. The beauty of the landscapes, the warmth of the people, and the flavors of the region continue to linger, reminding me of the transformative power of travel. I am grateful for the chance to have explored this slice of paradise, to have connected with the wonders of nature, and to have created a tapestry of experiences that will stay with me for a lifetime.

Eventually, this road trip from Perth to Margaret River is not just about the destination; it’s about the journey itself. Many of the towering karri trees are around 60 metres tall , and a walk through the forest is an unforgettable experience. Park up at the Boranup Forest Viewpoint on Caves Road to take a walk amongst the majestic karri trees.

Later, take a detour off Caves Road and along Boranup Drive where you can also admire the magnificent trees and the magical nature of the forest.

You can also take in wonderful views of the region from the Boranup Lookout , where you can really appreciate the diversity of the region. From here there are incredible views of the karri forest, the wild bush and the beautiful sea and sands of Hamelin Bay .

Explore the Picturesque Towns of Margaret River

Perth to Margaret River road trip

If you can tear yourself away from the beaches and vineyards, the region’s towns are also amongst the best places to visit in Margaret River. Each makes a great base to explore the area during a Margaret River road trip.

Alternatively they’re also the perfect place to stop in for a stroll and to get a bite to eat as you explore the area. Besides the well-stocked town of Margaret River, there are plenty of others that are also worth exploring.

Small and stylish Cowaramup is a beautiful town with a number of fine cafes, as well as an abundance of fibre-glass cows .

Blink and you’ll miss it, but don’t pass through Witchcliffe without calling into  The Flying Wardrobe , a charming vintage and collectibles store that wouldn’t look out of place in Melbourne or Sydney.

In the south of the region is the picture-perfect town of  Augusta , well stocked with cafes and pretty boutique stores.

Just a few minutes’ drive away is the historic  Cape Leeuwin lighthouse , where the Indian and Southern oceans meet at the far southern tip of the Margaret River region.

Hike the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park

Perth to Margaret River Road trip

Running parallel all along the length of Margaret River’s coastline is the Cape to Cape Track , a 135 kilometre walking route that follows the ocean all the way from Cape Naturaliste to Cape Leeuwin .

The route passes through the beautiful forests and heath fields of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park and along several cliff tops that overlook the Indian Ocean.

It takes several days to complete the whole track from beginning to end, though the route can be broken into sections that only take an hour or two, depending on their level of difficulty.

Some sections of the track are paved but others are best for seriously dedicated hikers only.

Just to the west of Cape Naturaliste on the northern tip of the Margaret River region are the stunning beaches around  Bunker Bay  and  Eagle Bay .

There are also breathtaking views from the base of the lighthouse at Cape Naturaliste overlooking  Geographe Bay . A little to the south of Cape Naturaliste is the jagged geology of  Canal Rocks .

This natural canal has been created by centuries of ocean waves crashing into the granite coastline, forging a narrow wedge between two sections of craggy rock, now connected by a wooden bridge .

Where to Eat in Margaret River

As well as being famous for world class wines, Margaret River also has a reputation for excellent food.

From swanky vineyard restaurants to the region’s best fish and chips here are the best places to get some grub in Margaret River .

  • Monday-Saturday: 11:00am-5:00pm | Sunday: 8:30am-5:00pm - closed Tuesdays

Popular pies include the Japanese chicken katsu pie and the Thai green lentil pie. There are also Aussie classics, such as beef pie, or pork pie with a dash of piccalilli. Extras and toppings can be added to make the pies into a meal, such as mash, mushy peas and red wine gravy. There’s also a great range of locally brewed beers on tap as well as a selection of cans and stubbies.

travel to margaret river from perth

Hi, I am travelling with another couple with kids (4-7 yo) in May for 12 days.

My mock itinerary is:

Day 1: Stay in east perth after touchdown. Visit DFO.

Day 3: Lancelin Sand dunes and Pinnacles Desert

Day 4: Drive to Bunbury Farmers Market and check in to margaret river farmstay (Fixed due to accomodation)

Day 5: Margaret River (Hamelin Bay and Leeuwin Lighthouse) Fixed due to accomodation

Day 6: Checkout Margaret River farmstay - Mammoth Cave, Swings and Roundabout, Simmos Ice creamery

Day 7: Busselton Jetty

Day 8: Drive Back to Perth , Return Car , Take photo containbow

Day 9: Fremantle Markets and Fremantle Harbour

Day 10: Watertown outlet and blue boat house

Day 11: Kings Park, Ivey Watson Playground, Perth Towet, Elizabeth Quay , London Court

Day 12: Fly back to home

The other family would love to see Albany. Would you suggest that into the itinerary as I heard the drive is not easy and I am not sure if we have sufficient days. We could drop some stuff from our itinerary but I would think thay perhaps the sand dunes will be more enjoyable for the kids. But if it sounds doable, could u suggest some places to stop by please?

I am not sure why you think the Lancelin sand dunes would be "more fun for the kids". If you want them to play on the beach making sand castles etc that could be factored in at Fremantle, Margaret River or even Albany if you get there. In May the temperatures will be cooling down and the water is pretty cool even in summer so swimming may not be a lot of fun. And while the Pinnacles are interesting, your life will still be complete if you don't see them. Would it be a possibility to go to Fremantle on Day 2 or 3 (swapping Caversham for Day 3 if you go on Day 2) and forgetting the Pinnacles?

Similarly, there isn't enough at Busselton Jetty IMO to occupy you for more than three hours tops if you're including lunch. So you could visit it on your way down to Margaret River.

Why Watertown? Do they have anything there you can't get cheaper at home? If you wanted to go there it would be just as easy to go there on Day 1 before or after visiting DFO (and I would also question going there for the same reasons.) And the Blue Boat House you can only look at from the end of the jetty leading out to is as it is private property. So you could take a photo of it on your way down to Fremantle.

Comments on itinerary:

Day 2- you probably have time to fit something else in with Caversham

Day 3- on way up or back to Lancelin is Yanchep NP which is a nice spot. It will be a long day.

Day 7- Busselton Jetty. Where are you staying that night?

If you wanted to visit Albany then you could call into Busselton Jetty after Bunbury.

Day 10 seems a bit boring to me. But I’m not a shopper. The Blue boathouse is just a quick photo op. Nearby is a great playground :

https://www.nedlands.wa.gov.au/community/youth-and-children/jo-wheatley-all-abilities-play-space.aspx

Also river front at Matilda Bay.

But you need a car to get to that play area. Blue boathouse/Matilda Bay you could do by bus.

Photo of container rainbow is in Fremantle if you had a car you’d do on Fremantle day.

Now to your question about Albany.

Yes it’s certainly possible but you’ll need to cut/combine some Perth based things. Do you really need to shop here?

From Margaret River region you could do 1 night Pemberton then 2 nights Albany. That gives you time to explore attractions on the way and break up the drive. Then the drive Albany to Perth is around 5 hours so that cuts into a day.

So for that big loop I’d allocate 7 days for road trip and 5 nights around Perth.

Attractions on that route:

Pemberton-Gloucester Tree walk trails, Big Brook Dam, food and wine etc

Walpole- Giant Tingke walk trails, TreeTop Walk

Between Walpole and Denmark- Reptile park, Greens Pool, Alpaca farm and wineries

Denmark- river front

Albany-Anzac Precinct, Middleton Beach/Emu Point, Windfarm, Gap and other attractions in Torndirrup NP, etc

A possible alternative:

If you thought Albany was too far you could after Margaret River region add Pemberton for 1/2 nights. Lovely wilderness area ( kids might enjoy Tramway), and return to Perth via some nice little towns of Bridgetown, Balingup and Dinneybrook ( Apple Fun Park popular).

So that a 4-5 night road trip and remaining in Perth.

Edit: probably echoed a few of York Foodies comments

Starting off, why DFO and Watertown? Do they have anything there you can't get at home cheaper? If you must visit them, do both on Day 1. Or just pick one. You're spending a lot of money to come to Australia, why not use your time to do and see things you can't do and see at home?

As to the Blue Boat house, you can't actually go in and really all you can to is stand at the land end of the jetty leading out to it. That could be done on the way to Fremantle.

Lancelin sand dunes and the Pinnacles- Why do you think the sand dunes would be more fun for the children? If you're imagining them building sand castle s on the beach and paddling in the water, be aware that May is cooling down and the water is generally quite cool even in summer, so paddling might be rather chilly. Besides, Margaret River, Fremantle and Albany all have beaches as well. As to the Pinnacles, they're interesting but your life will still be complete if you don't see them. It's a long way to go for an hour's sightseeing.

IMO there's not enough at Busselton Jetty to occupy you for more than a couple of hours, maybe three if you have lunch as well. You could stop here on your way down to Margaret River.

Fremantle- I'd suggest visiting here this on Day 3 instead of Lancelin/Pinnacles- or swap with Day 2 if that works better. You can take your picture of the container rainbow (if that's what you mean by "containbow") then.

Edited to add, redid my original post after I got an error message saying it didn't post. This version expands a bit more on what I originally said so I'll let it stand.

Thanks for all your replies. Reason why I thought of lancelin sand dunes is because I thought it might be fun doing sandboarding and the kids have never seen any desert before. But then again I wonder if the drive warrants for the long drive especially since it seems out of the way. But if Pemberton and Albany is more fun - I would switch that out.

My opinion on sandboarding - it's fun going down if you don't crash. However, you generally end up with sand in places where sand should never go - eyes, ears and other unmentionable spots. And then if you want to do it again, you have to walk back up the sand dune. Nothing harder than walking uphill in sand. Doubt they would want to do it more than twice.

I’m not sure that children that young have the control necessary to sandboard safely, even with a parent on the board (assuming that’s possible, which it may well not be). It’s a long way to go for a couple of hours’ “fun”.

On the other hand, Pemberton and Albany are full of fun things to see and do which the children will enjoy.
