This bike is a tank, incredibly durable.

Heavy, and 10 years later it's a little old and outdated.

I've owned this bike for about 10 years. Brought it home new from the store. I've replaced the obvious parts like break pads and cables. I've replaced the seat and the pedals and recently the pedal arm. This bike has held up through everything from dragging it through the woods to Porcupine Rim trail and Moab last year. I ride it on a regular basis and I don't take it easy. The fork has been missing an end cap for 4 years and it still rides great. Sure you could have a better, lighter bike with much better suspension, but ten years of heavy use for this price can not be beat.

Strong frame

front suspension is bouncy

Owned since 2008 its been a great bike for getting around town. I don't have to worry about locking it up in the city. I like it a lot and I plan to keep it for years to come.

Good frame worthy of upgrades. The stock components were not terrible for XC either. I just killed the original deraileur in a race with several hard rock strikes. Honestly, I bent it back with pliers and it still worked pretty good! But it wasn't perfect and gave me an excuse to replace it with XT. The original wheels never gave me a problem, but I didn't do big drops either.

Most components. The original pedals were garbage. The stem and handlebars were practically wrought iron. The front fork bounced like a pogo stick up every climb.

This is a follow-up to my review from years ago. Over the 5 years that I have had this bike I upgraded when I found the right parts on sale, and now I have a machine that I am very happy with. The only original components that I need to replace are the cranks and front deraileur, which still work like new. When they die, I will replace with lighter stuff and have a super light, super durable machine, that cost very little. And if I decide to go FS, I'll just swap my parts to the new frame, and I'm good! Thanks Trek for making a durable, affordable bike.

Junky bikes growing up.

Strong Aluminum frame so it's lighter than the 820 and when you push down on the cranks you'll feel the bike respond. Don't let the die-hards fool you, there really is nothing wrong with the stock components on this bike assuming you are of average weight and riding ability (with the exception of the pedals, they really should be of some type of metal). It is easier to upgrade as you're riding ability gets better with components that fit your budget and your objective than it is to buy the higher end 4000 series and be essentialy "stuck" with those components. The saddle is moderately comfortable (if you sit further back on it) and once broken in the shocks have good response (obviously not for 6 foot acid drops!) and the rims and tires will get the job done. As earlier noted: The black and red frame is way cool!!!

Pedals and I wasn't crazy about the stock grips (too small and kinda hard). Other than that nada.

Great Value and quality parts. This is an entry level bike so when you review it, you take that into consideration. A much better value and deal than the Specialized "Hardrock" in my opinion. The frame is going to last as long as any new upgrades you might make.

Frame is thee same one as they use across the range, decent components

Pedals are rubbish, grips not great

I moved from road racing, and having tried far more expensive cycles, I stuck with this - it is a great bike

only far more expensive OR cheap garbage

Light frame, nice red colours, ez fire shifters, matching clr fork, matching clr seat. Got it on sale (no tax) so good deal for me. Feels like this bike is a head turner. Maybe because i bought the red one as opposed to the silver one... It's my first real mtn bike and I'm quite happy with the ride.

The shocks seem to be 'sticky'. It won't come back up if you press it down about an inch. You gotta pull the front of bike off the ground for the shocks to become unstuck.. Will need to ask the bike shop WTF is going on tmrw...

Good quality at that price.. I almost got the Trek 820 instead.. but that was a steel frame and would have been too heavy for me to lift over my head. I have a bike rack on my car, and i have no problems getting it up and down the car. I'm not a very strong guy either... So all the guys who think this bike is to heavy are either girls.. or just weaklings.. no one can be weaker than me!

First bike.....unless you want to count my crappy old Huffy Firemountain POS that i got from Toys r us.. I have that to my sister and she is happy with it....

new to cycling. seemed like a lot for the money when I shopped around

pedals are barely better than nothing. seat was so-so

I rode a dime store 20 years and thought I would get on another bike but decided to try again for health reasons. I thought I got alot for the money compared to the wal-mart specials and have been pleased with it. I did not want to spend a lot of money on a bike if I didn't like riding but have had a great time riding with my wife and her new bike also. After riding it a while i have found some things that were not top notch but I am getting familier with bikes and will upgrade in another year and still keep this one for the trail that goes through my town. We ride mostly on rodes out with the deer and coyotes but ride the trail. I have been pleased with this purchase and what I got with it .You get what you pay for so there will be upgrades in both bike but was a good choice for a first bike

Great light, durable aluminum frame. I like the EZ fire shifters as opposed to gripshift. Great value for the quality Shimano components you get. Good, quality bike for beginners (like myself) who don't want to spend a lot of $ for a bike they don't need (yet.) Nice color and I like the subtle touches like the black spokes, which make the bike look more expensive than it is.

Front InSync fork seems to be OK so far, but I am upgrading to a Judy C which has longer travel and is adjustable. The plastic pedals definitely suck...those will eventually be changed.

Great for beginners who want a quality bike for a low cost.

Old Trek Mountain Track 800.

It is a good price for a decent bike. The frame is pretty good.

The pedals are bad. The Shimano components aren't that good. The fork is a brand I have never heard of, and doesn't seem to do that much except slam down and bottom out when I do about a two and a half foot drop.

This is a good bike for anyone who just rides around town or like in a little nature park. I wouldn't recommend doing any drops over 3 or 4 feet. It's alright, but I'm getting a Jamis xlt 1.0. This is a great all around bike for someone who isn't jumping off cliffs yet.

This bike takes a lot of abuse. I thinks its a great bike for the price. Even though I will be upgrading soon I'm keeping this bike as a backup (And for guests)

Pedals are plastic, InSync shocks are ok but RockShocks would be better.

Great fist mountain bike.

Department store junk.

Trek 4100 Mountain Bike

About 18 years ago we bought a pair of Trek 4100 hardtail bikes. The image at the top of this page is taken from the 2013 Trek bikes catalog.

These were our first mountain bikes. Our intent was to get out in the open air and enjoy the trails.

We had no idea how to choose a mountain bike or what to look for, what’s important and what’s not so important.

These were entry level bikes, but they had an alloy frame and a very nice red and black paint scheme. The drivetrain was a basic Shimano 3X7 speed drivetrain, the 26″ tires were 1.95″wide and the front shock had as a 70mm travel.

About two years later I started to upgrade and replace all kind of bits and components on my bike. This first wave included the following:

  • a new rear wheel with a 9 speed Shimano freewheel
  • a new 9 speed Shimano Deore drivetrain - shifters, rear derailleur, chain, 11-34 cassette
  • a new set of Avid SD5 brake levers

This setup worked very well for me. The bike handled all trails and any ride I attempted. After a while i noticed my wheels are not true anymore, and I realized I need better wheels given my weight and riding style.

A pair of Sun Ringle 36H rims and a set of Shimano Deore wheel brackets became my net set of wheels. More or less bombproof wheels, they stayed true to this day.

About one year later I retired these bikes in favor of a full suspension bike.

For about 12-13 years my old Trek bike was rarely used. Nevertheless, whenever I upgraded or replaced a component on the bike I used day in day out, the old part found it’s way to the Trek.

About 2 years ago I finally switched to a 29er. I took the wheels, the RockShox Reba and a Shimano Deore crankset (originally installed on my Genesis touring bike) and installed them on the old Trek. And, I also replaced the v-brakes with the Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes that came off the touring bike as well. I used an A2Z frame adapter to mount the rear caliper, it works very well.

The second bike kept it’s original configuration for many years, only the handlebar was replaced with a new one after a bad crash. Eventually I did upgrade the drivetrain to a 3X9 setup and the wheels to a new set, hand built wheels with fantastic Ambrosio rims.

Today both bikes are fully functional, very well maintained and ready to hit the trails if needed.

This is how my Trek looks today:

trek 4100 alpha mountain bike

Going back to 2013, this is the first year I joined a bunch of experienced riders in my first bike touring expedition. I did not have a touring bike at the time, so I used my old Trek. A rear panniers rack, slick road tires and a set of bags was all I needed.

It was a very good experience riding about 500km in 8 days, no major mechanical issues.

trek 4100 alpha mountain bike

To summarize, in my own personal opinion, these Trek frames are fantastic. They are lightweight, climb very well and are very stable going downhill, comfortable riding position and most of all, very reliable. Real fun playing around and upgrading components on these bikes.

Restoring a MTB- TREK 4100 ALPFA

  • Add to quote

I'm looking to restore a Trek 4100 Alpha I found for 30 dollars. It needs work!!! I want to find someone who might have old parts laying around that would fit this bike like good set of shifters and brake components maybe even an upgraded set. And of course for a really cheap price as I haven't been employed for the last 16 months. Our biking season is coming in my neck of the woods. But anyway I don't want a donor bike because I will only eventually try to build that too. Even if you have advice on what to look for I would really appreciate it.

The first question I have is whether you are able to take everything apart and put it back together? A neighbor brought me a bike that had been sitting out in the rain (which always ticks me off) that someone gave him. You may not need to replace everything just to get it rolling again, but you have to be able to take it apart to see what can be cleaned and re-used and what has to be replaced. By apart I mean hubs, bottom bracket, headset, etc. Another problem may be what basic bike tools you own or have access to. You will most likely need cables, tires, tubes, brake pads and a chain, but if you can clean up the rest of it and get is greased/lubed you may be able to get it to work. I don't know if the fork works (rusted?), if it doesn't you may have to pick up a cheap rigid. If it is stuck and won't compress you kinda already have a heavy rigid, but if it collapses at the wrong time while riding it will not be a pleasant experience. John

Thanks John, My goal is to fix as much of the the things I can on this bike but your right the front shock is now rusted rigid. Is that gas and can it be taken apart without much danger. And also I would like to upgrade the gear shifting components to rapid fire like on my Trek 830. I really never liked the twisting kind of shifter.

So, anyone have any parts. I'm still looking!!!

trek 4100 alpha mountain bike

Everybody's right, I'm afraid. Those parts are usually thrown away or donated to a bike kitchen. You could try there. Good luck.

illfixit said: God dammit, I never dreamt this post would rise up so many sensitive feelings about fixing an old bike, holy ****. I'll find another source as to find my parts. And the beginner comments please I've been riding mountains for 40 plus years from New England to AZ and have won several mtb races. I thought there was a bit more backbone in my fellow riders, apparently not. So please ask your mommies for some warm milk and be carful of the pole in the basement as you prepare for your next adventure. And remember don't for get to wear your protection and your sippy cup of water so you don't get hurt and dehydrated. As for you John, disregard this reply and thanks for the direction I don't know how you stand it here!!!Signing off... Click to expand...

That thing could be salvaged, but you aren't going to get that fork apart, and it isn't even worth saving. If that came into my shop, I'd be expecting at the MINIMUM to replace all the cables and the cable housings, perhaps even the chain. Put as little effort into that thing as possible, it is the equivalent of taking an old rusting Pinto that's got weeds growing out of it, and getting the engine to just turn over.

trek 4100 alpha mountain bike

Cables, chain, and a good bit of elbow grease, and I'd ride that thing. I had my Y33 sitting outside for probably a solid 2 years. Just stupid on my part, but it was out there for a long time. Fork paint is badly faded, chain was so badly rusted it would not move. Rear hub very, very rough. Took it apart for warranty on the frame, and I have been able to make almost every part usable again. The wheels are almost perfect, front and rear XT derailleurs are fully usable. Bottom bracket was fine. Cassette cleaned up and looks like new. Deore V brakes are being used on my brother's hardtail, as well as the brake levers. The shifters were broken and junk anyway, so we didn't even mess with them. My RST Mozo Pro fork was in rough shape, but after pulling it apart, removing the old grease and all of the water in it, it works like a nearly new 19 year old fork! The tires were completely destroyed, and I had to hack away the weeds that had encased the entire rear wheel. It was a sad, sad, sad sight.

trek 4100 alpha mountain bike

I'm sure we will all prosper from the full retelling of his unfortunate implosion, so it is posted for posterity...

Trek 4500 Mountain Bike Review: Is it worth your money?

trek 4100 alpha mountain bike

Mountain biking is an exhilarating and fulfilling hobby, but let’s be real, it can also be pretty expensive.

Luckily, there are plenty of great budget bikes on the market that don’t compromise on performance. Today, we’re going to take a closer look at one of those bikes – the Trek 4500 Mountain Bike.

So, if you’re in the market for a bike that won’t break the bank but still offers plenty of features and versatility, stick around for this review.

Trek 4500 MTB At A Glance

trek 4100 alpha mountain bike

Trek 4500 is an amazing hardtail mountain bike from Trek. It provides good riding on technical trails, and the lightweight frame makes it very convenient for beginners.

Trek 4500 inspires confidence on the trail with solid handling and durable components. It sports 26-inch tires and a suspension fork to smooth out bumps and major impacts.

It also comes with a Shimano drivetrain, a RockShox Dart 2 fork, and with sturdy double-walled rims, so you can roll over anything with confidence. Also, the hydraulic disc brakes in the later models deliver precise stopping ability.

  • High quality aluminum frame
  • Durable components
  • Reliable brakes and gears
  • Sturdy wheels and tires
  • Complex 3X drivetrain
  • Small 26-inch wheels

Unfortunately, Trek doesn’t make this bike anymore, but there are some really impressive newer models with better designs which are excellent alternatives to the 4500 Trek mountain bike.

I recommend Trek Marlin 5 and Trek Fuel EX 5 as great alternatives, you can scroll down to see our brief review of these bikes.

Trek 4500 Mountain Bike: Features and Specifications

Frame and fork.

Trek 4500 Mountain Bike is the perfect companion for beginner trail riders who want a lightweight and durable bike that can handle mountain trails with ease.

The hardtail aluminum frame makes it an excellent budget bike, with a trail-taming front suspension that absorbs impacts and road noise.

It comes equipped with a RockShox Dart 2 with 100mm travel suspension fork, which might not be the lightest, but it is super strong and very reliable.

trek 4100 alpha mountain bike

Actually, the Suntour XCM suspension on the Trek 4500 makes it a budget to mid-range bike that packs a punch. And the relatively tight head tube angle that offers flexible handling for easy steering and control, especially during climbs and descents.

With its great budget fork, the Trek 4500 is quite comfortable on longer rides and actually able to handle some riding on technical trails.

From my experience, the Trek 4500 is an excellent choice for beginners who want to hit the trails with confidence and style.

Gears and Brakes

Shimano is well-known for making reliable gears with smooth shifting and easy maintenance. And the Trek 4500 features Shimano components, it has the Shimano Alivio groupset.

With the Trek 4500, you get an incredible range of gearing, from low gears that smoothly take up steep climbs to a good range of high gears for fast descents.

Before this bike model was discontinued, it had many different models, and a few of its features changed with each new release. For instance, the oldest models were fitted with rim brakes, but the later models were upgraded to more reliable and effective hydraulic disc brakes.

These bikes had the Shimano M395, which have excellent stopping power and will stop on a dime even in wet conditions.

Now, whether you’re just starting out on mountain trails or you’re an experienced rider, you can trust the Shimano groupset and hydraulic disc brakes to give you the performance you need to tackle any terrain.

Wheels and Tires

If you’re looking for a mountain bike with excellent handling ability and great acceleration, then the Trek 4500 is a great choice.

4500 Trek is equipped with 26″ wheels, which are smaller than other sizes like 27.5″ or 29″, but they make up for it with their maneuverability, and you can always fit larger tires.

trek 4100 alpha mountain bike

The wheels are designed to be strong and durable, with 32 spokes and double-walled rims, this means that you can take on any trail without worrying about your wheels getting damaged.

Plus, it comes with Bontrager 26×2.2″ tires that provide great flexibility, but the traction is not so great. Bigger and wider tires on a mountain bike are ideal for providing traction on trails with loose dirt, and they also help to absorb shocks and bumps on the trail.

Thankfully, you can always swap the 26-inches tire on the Trek 4500 for bigger ones. However, even the small tires are not so bad. With those tires, you can actually hit the trails with confidence and take on any challenge that comes your way.

The wheels and tires of the Trek 4500 are a great combination that provides excellent handling, durability, and versatility.

Saddle and Handlebars

A good saddle and adjustable handlebars are crucial components of a mountain bike, as they can greatly impact your riding experience.

With a comfortable saddle, you can ride for long periods without experiencing discomfort, while adjustable handlebars allow you to customize your riding position to suit your preferences and riding style.

For the Trek 4500 though, the comfort of the saddle is highly subjective. Whether you find it comfortable or not depends on how it makes your backside feel. From my experience, not many people find it comfortable, but that’s not an issue because you can always install a better saddle.

And for the handlebars, Trek 4500 comes equipped with Bontrager handlebars, grips, and a stem. Its handlebar’s 31.8mm diameter and 15mm rise give it plenty of space for a comfortable grip when riding.

trek 4100 alpha mountain bike

These handlebars are quite impressive and provide excellent grip, even in wet or muddy conditions, and helps to absorb shocks and vibrations on the trail.

The bar’s robust design can withstand some abuse while being used on the trail. And the stem has a 10-degree rise, which provides a comfortable riding position while also keeping you in control of your bike.

The stem is also adjustable, allowing you to fine-tune your riding position for maximum comfort and performance.

Size and weight

Trek 4500 comes in a range of sizes to fit different riders, with options ranging from 13″ all the way up to 24″, you’re sure to find the perfect fit for you. The frame sizes are precisely 13.5, 15.5, 17.5, 18.5, 19.5, 21.5, 23.5″

And for the weight, the Trek 4500 is relatively lightweight for a mountain bike, with an average weight of about 30 lbs (13.6 kg). That means it’s easy to handle and maneuver on the trails without being too heavy to carry around when needed.

The maximum weight limit of 275 to 300 lbs is also good, providing plenty of support for a wide range of riders.

Ride quality and performance

The Trek 4500 is an all-around amazing bike. Its comfortable ride and great performance make it an excellent choice for any rider, regardless of skill level.

While it may not be the lightest bike on the market, it has an incredible range of gears, making it very adaptable and easy to conquer a variety of terrain.

Plus, its 26″ wheels provide excellent handling and acceleration, while the Bontrager XR2 26″ tires provide good grip in all kinds of conditions.

One of the best things about the Trek 4500 is its versatility. Whether you’re tackling light, dusty paths or hitting some loose terrain with serious speed, this bike can handle it all.

Its sturdy frame and durable components make it perfect for trail riding, while the adjustable handlebars and comfortable saddle ensure a comfortable ride.

I highly recommend the Trek 4500 for anyone looking for a mid-range bike that delivers outstanding performance at a great price. Its combination of affordability, versatility, and quality makes it an excellent investment for anyone who loves mountain biking.

Best Trek 4500 Mountain Bike Alternatives

As Trek doesn’t make the 4500 mountain bikes anymore, you cannot buy them brand new. But, you will find even better performing Trek mountain bikes with more advanced features and superior build quality.

If you absolutely want a Trek bike, then I recommend the Trek Fuel EX 5 or the Trek Marlin 5 as great alternatives for the Trek 4500. But if you’re willing to try a different brand, then the Schwinn Bonafide is a great choice with a much lower price tag.

Trek Fuel EX 5

trek 4100 alpha mountain bike

Fuel EX 5 is a very efficient full-suspension trail bike that’s ready to handle the most rugged mountain terrains. It’s built for speed, with a sturdy chassis and supportive front and rear suspension to give you loads of support on both climbs and descents.

The Trek Fuel EX 5 stands out as a high-value, high-performance mountain bike with remarkable adaptability. It’s fitted with a Shimano 1×12 drivetrain, a dropper post for getting low on descents, and hydraulic disc brakes.

As a heavy trail-rider, this bike most likely checks all the boxes on your wishlist for a new bike. It’s a sure-footed bike that delivers better stability and control. And more importantly, it’s a fun bike to ride.

Trek Marlin 5

trek 4100 alpha mountain bike

Trek Marlin 5 is a trail mountain bike that’s built to gracefully handle daily adventures on rough terrains. It has a lightweight aluminum frame with a 2×8 drivetrain for smooth riding and shifting and powerful hydraulic disc brakes which provide fast and precise stopping.

While the Marlin 5 is made for trail riding, it’s also versatile and can double as a commuter bike. This bike has a stunning frame with internal routing for the brake and shift cables, which can extend the lifespan of your wires by shielding them from the environment.

It’s the perfect bike for new trail riders and comes in seven frame sizes to fit riders of all heights. Marlin 5 is elegant and comfortable, with a ton of features that are typically reserved for more pricey bikes.

Schwinn Bonafide MTB

Schwinn Bonafide Men and Women Mountain Bike, Front Suspension, 24-Speed, 29-Inch Wheels, 17-Inch Aluminum Frame, Matte Black/Red

The Bonafide MTB is another great bike from Schwinn. It’s a mid-range bike with interesting features and an affordable price tag.

The Schwinn Bonafide MTB gives you a pleasant and reliable riding experience with its aluminum mountain frame and sturdy suspension fork that absorbs bumps and big hits.

As a hardtail mountain bike, it’s designed for the trail with large 29″ knobby tires and durable alloy rims. The alloy rims increase longevity without adding extra weight, while the mechanical disc brakes offer precise stopping on the trail.

The gear shifting is smooth and seamless, thanks to the 24-speed trigger shifters and front and rear derailleurs. This bike is fun and easy to ride, which makes it great for heavy riders.

Finally, is Trek 4500 mountain bike a good buy?

Well, that’s my review of the Trek 4500 Mountain Bike. I hope you found it helpful in making your decision. I know that mountain biking can be an expensive hobby, but the Trek 4500 provides a lot of value for the price.

It’s versatile, sturdy, and has a great set of features that make it a great bike for a variety of riders. So, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly mountain bike that can handle a range of terrain, the Trek 4500 might just be the bike for you.

You likely won’t find a brand-new Trek 4500, but the alternative options included above are really great choices.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

‍ Trek 4900 Specifications

If you're looking for a casual mountain bike that can handle cross-country riding, the Trek 4900 might suit you. This bike features a semi-integrated head tube, which gives it a sleek and modern look. The top tube is sloped, which makes it easier to dismount and mount the bike.

The Trek 4900 comes with a single coil fork, which is great for riders who want a smooth ride without worrying about adjusting the fork. The fork has magnesium lowers, which increases durability while keeping the weight down. The bike also comes with Bontrager tires, which provide great traction on various surfaces.

The Trek 4900 has hydraulic disc brakes, which provide reliable stopping power in all conditions. The bike also has a rear derailleur, which allows you to shift gears smoothly and easily. The pedals are durable and grip well, even in wet conditions.

Additional Features

The Trek 4900 is packed with additional features that make it stand out from other mid-range mountain bikes. Here are some of the features that you'll love:

Performance

The Trek 4900 is a mountain bike built to perform on the most rugged trails. The bike features an aluminum frame with forged dropouts, making it sturdy and durable.

The Trek 4900 is equipped with a Shimano Deore rear derailleur, which provides smooth and precise shifting. This makes it easy to shift gears as you ride, ensuring you always have the right gear for the terrain.

The bike also features a Suntour fork with remote lockout and adjustable preload. This allows you to adjust the suspension to suit your riding style and the terrain you are riding on. The fork provides excellent shock absorption, ensuring a smooth ride even on rough terrain.

The Trek 4900 also has fender mounts, making it a great choice for commuters who want to ride to work even in wet conditions. The bike is designed to handle all types of terrain, from rocky trails to smooth pavement.

The oversized Alpha SL aluminum frame of the Trek 4900 is built to withstand the toughest trails. The bike is designed to handle the most rugged terrain, making it a great choice for anyone who wants to push their limits.

The Bontrager SSR rims of the Trek 4900 are also designed to withstand the toughest trails. The rims are strong and durable, ensuring they can handle even the most demanding rides.

Frame and Design

The Trek 4900 is built with an aluminum frame that is both durable and lightweight. The frame is designed to handle the rigors of off-road riding and is equipped with forged dropouts that provide additional strength and stability. The oversized alpha top tube adds to the durability of the frame and helps to reduce flexing during hard rides.

The frame of the Trek 4900 is designed to be lightweight without sacrificing strength. This makes it easier to handle and maneuver on the trail. The mono-stay seat stay design helps to reduce weight and provides additional clearance for larger tires.

The Trek 4900 frame is also designed with a sleek and modern look. The lightweight frame is complemented by various lightweight components, including the suspension fork, wheels, and drivetrain. This helps to keep the overall weight of the bike down, making it easier to handle and maneuver on the trail.

Fork and Suspension

The Trek 4900 bike comes with a Suntour fork that has a remote lockout feature. This means that you can lock the fork from the handlebars, which is a useful feature when you are climbing. The lockout feature makes the fork rigid, which helps to transfer more power to the pedals.

The fork on the Trek 4900 is semi-integrated, meaning it is not a full-suspension fork. It has a single coil spring with magnesium lowers. The fork has hydra-coil damping, which provides a smooth ride.

The suspension on the Trek 4900 is adequate for most riders. It’s not a full-suspension bike, but the fork does a good job of absorbing bumps on the trail. Overall, the fork and suspension on the Trek 4900 are well-suited for cross-country riding.

Wheels and Tires

The Trek 4900 comes with Bontrager Ranger alloy rims or Bontrager SSR wheels and tires, depending on the version. The wheels are made of aluminum and are durable enough to handle rough terrain. They’re also lightweight, which makes the bike easier to handle and maneuver.

The tires of the 2006 version are 26 inches in diameter and have a width of 2.2 inches. They provide good traction on most surfaces, including loose gravel and dirt. The tread pattern offers a good balance of grip and rolling resistance, making the bike efficient on both climbs and descents.

One thing to note is that the tires are not tubeless-ready, so you’ll need to use inner tubes. This is not a big deal, but it does mean that you will need to carry a spare tube with you in case of a flat.

Riding Experience

When it comes to riding experience, the Trek 4900 is a solid choice for both casual and experienced riders alike. The bike is designed to handle the most rugged trails, making it a great option for those who want to take on challenging terrain.

The Trek 4900 is also a great option for cross-country riding, as it is lightweight and easy to maneuver. The bike's geometry is designed to provide a comfortable and efficient riding position, which is great for longer rides.

Drivetrain and Gears

When it comes to the drivetrain and gears on the Trek 4900, you'll find a reliable setup that can handle a variety of terrain.

This bike comes equipped with a Shimano Deore rear derailleur, which is known for its smooth shifting and durability. This component helps ensure that you can easily shift gears as you climb hills or pick up speed on flat sections of the trail.

The rear derailleur is just one part of the bike's overall drivetrain, which includes the chain, cassette, and front derailleur. Together, these components work to transfer power from your pedals to the rear wheel, propelling you forward.

The Trek 4900 does not disappoint when it comes to its stopping power. Equipped with hydraulic disc brakes, you can stop on a dime, even when going downhill at high speeds.

The disc brakes provide more consistent stopping power than traditional rim brakes, making it easier to control your speed and avoid accidents.

If you're a rider who loves to have fun and push your limits, the Trek 4900's brakes will give you the confidence to do so. You won't have to worry about your brakes failing you when you need them the most, which can make all the difference when riding in tough terrain or country mountains.

  • Strong, durable aluminum frame that can handle rough trails and jumps.
  • The frame is also lightweight, making it easier to maneuver and control the bike.
  • Smooth and precise shifting
  • Powerful brakes
  • The suspension fork absorbs bumps and vibrations, providing a smoother ride.
  • 26-inch versatile tires that are suitable for a wide range of terrains.
  • Heavyweight
  • It only has a front suspension
  • Limited gear range

Final Verdict

Overall, the Trek 4900 is a great choice for anyone who wants a durable and versatile mountain bike that can handle a wide range of terrains and riding styles. Whether you're racing or just riding for fun, the Trek 4900 has the power and capabilities to take you wherever you want to go.

The components of the Trek 4900 are durable and reliable, which makes it a great choice for racing or just riding with friends. The shifters are smooth and easy to use, and the grips are comfortable and provide a secure hold on the handlebar.

Where to Buy

You can buy the Trek 4900 bike online from eBay or the official Trek Bikes website . The Trek 4900 is a mid-range hardtail mountain bike that offers good value for money. However, note that the price and value of the Trek 4900 vary depending on the year and model.

Customer Reviews

Very happy with my new M7 and wife's Moscow Plus

We purchased the NCM Moscow 29 E bike from Leon Cycles earlier this month. Communication was via 'Whatsapp' which I initially thought a little odd but worked out well. Once communication established the transaction was completed quickly and easily. We were able to arrange for the team to assemble the bike for us and we picked it up from the warehouse without an issue. We love the bike and are continuing to find new places to discover using it. Competitive price and great service.

I ordered the bike 4 days ago and today it arrived. Now my first impressions: it is easy to assemble, looks great, is cleanly finished and after a first short driving test I have to say, the hammer. It's totally easy to drive. If it stays that way, I can only say thank you Leon Cycle. Now I can cycle again, despite knee problems. Price-performance top

Great bike, this is my second e bike and by far the best. Watching e bikes over the last 10 years I think the Moscow 29er is fantastic. I live in the Dandenongs outside Melbourne with big steep hills and the Moscow takes them all on with great pulling power and gear range. 48v with 16 amps means over 750 watts of power. The bike is big and serious so getting on and off can be tricky but you do get used to it. With the previous bike (36v at 8amps) I was scared of running out of battery on a big hill and having to push the bike home but not with the Moscow. Also if you take the front wheel off you can get it in a hatchback like my Mazda 3 Which is nice. At $2200 it is a great buy.

Purchased two Moscow 27.5. One for my wife, one for me. Fast delivery, well boxed and easy assembly. Absolutely FANTASTIC to ride and use. Great range, and enough power for steep hills and tough terrain. I highly recommend them. Exactly as advertised and brochure. Looked at many options from other suppliers but these are the best value for money. If anyone wants a little extra range and a few more features then a Moscow Plus may suit. 48 Volt is the way to go. Great support and assistance from the team at Leon to make the right purchase decision. Hope other people may enjoy the ride and quality product. Harry G

City OKs new Moscow Mountain trails

Moscow Mountain could have a new 2-mile system of bike trails in two years thanks to a local volunteer group and a Tuesday decision from the Moscow City Council.

The Moscow Area Mountain Bike Association is proposing to build and maintain the trail system on the mountain near the intersection of Moscow Mountain Road and Rock Creek Road.

MAMBA is a local nonprofit organization founded in 1997 that develops, maintains and promotes the use of more than 60 miles of non-motorized trails on and around the Moscow Mountain area.

The group wants to construct the trails on 20 acres of land that was donated to the city in 1941 by Harry and Nina Powell. It is currently undeveloped and not being managed for recreational purposes.

MAMBA anticipates construction will cost $10,000. It has applied for a grant from the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation to fund the project, and asked the city to provide a matching $5,000. The city approved the match along with a license agreement for the trail system.

MAMBA anticipates construction to start this spring and for the trails to open in May 2025.

The nonprofit says this new trail system will discourage unauthorized user-created trails, improve recreational activity in the area and appease those who want more advanced mountain bike trails.

Councilor Sandra Kelly said she believes this project will help with the city’s tourism, and she appreciates that MAMBA will maintain the trails.

Councilor Gina Taruscio also praised MAMBA’s ability to tackle a project like this.

“The reputation you guys have precedes you and I really think this is a ridiculous no-brainer,” Taruscio said.

In other business, the council approved an appeal that will allow The Jubilee School Montessori in Eastside Marketplace to have a day care for children ages 3 to 5.

City staff previously determined the proposal did not meet the license requirements because the facility did not have a fenced outdoor play area adjacent to the day care.

Malia Mason, director of The Jubilee School Montessori, approached the council to appeal the denial. She said the school wants to incorporate 3- to 6-year-old children into its school program, but the city requires a day care license for 3-year-olds.

The school plans to create an outdoor play area in the future. There is currently an outdoor space behind the building. Mason also said that 3- to 4-year-olds would not use the outdoor area because they are only at the facility for three hours in the morning.

There was much debate about this request, particularly about whether the school’s unique education model justified waiving the day care rule regarding play areas. The motion to approve the license passed 4-2.

Also on Tuesday, the council approved a grant request to the Idaho Parks and Recreation to upgrade Lola Clyde Park by adding parking, frontage improvements and an internal pathway system.
