Bar Ends 

You probably know that bar ends – extensions that are typically fitted to the ends of straight handlebars – are forbidden in road racing. The reason for this is not at all naive: it’s possible that riders hook each other’s handlebars during tight bunch-riding. Additionally, if a collision happens – bar ends can even cause injuries. However, if you’re not road racing, they’re excellent additions to have, as they allow you to vary the type of grip and posture throughout the ride. If you use them, your hands will have a neutral position, and that places less stress upon your muscles. Be careful, though, if you love riding in the woods – when navigating between trees, they can hook around branches – and that can result in a crash. Don’t dismiss this concern due to being a skilled rider – accidents do happen. And when they do, it’s good to know that bar ends can add some protection to your hands!

Did you know that before the safety bicycles, the ones that became popular nearing the end of 19th century, bikes did not have chains? That’s right – pedals were attached directly to the drive-wheel! Of course, this was limiting top speed by the diameter of the wheel – and here’s the explanation as to why front wheels used to be so large in size. People tried to invent different linkage mechanisms that would raise the effective gear ratio, but with limited success, until the chain came onto the scene. With the chain drive, mechanical advantage between the drive and driven sprockets to determine the maximum speed was allowed, and as a result, it was possible to reduce the size of the driving wheel for safety. Thank the chain you don’t have to ride a bike whose front wheel is twice as tall as you are!

Bike Saddle

A saddle, or a seat, is a bicycle part you might need to change many times. Do you know how best to adjust your seat? It should be adjusted in relation to the bottom bracket, not the ground or handlebars. When you’re pedalling, your legs should have a slight bend even when the pedals are at their furthest distance. Basically, if you can sit on the saddle and place both your feet flat on the ground – your saddle is too low, so check its height. Of course, this does not apply to recumbent bicycles, where you’re in a laid-back reclining position. And don’t forget the slight tilt! Your saddle should be nearly level, but not totally level. For example, in professional bicycle racing, the rules require the seat to be within 3 degrees of level.

Anthony Albanese, James Marape to walk Kokoda Track in symbolic Anzac Day visit, as Chinese foreign minister prepares for PNG trip

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will mark Anzac Day on the Kokoda Track in a highly symbolic visit designed to highlight the shared World War II legacy and growing security relationship between both countries.

It is understood Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister James Marape is likely to join Mr Albanese for at least parts of the walk.

The visit will likely involve a multi-day trek along a section of the Kokoda Track.

Each year, many Australians make the trip to PNG to walk the track and honour the sacrifice of those who fought in World War II.

A dawn service is also held in Isurava, a small town along the track.

The visit comes just a few months after Mr Marape delivered a historic address to Australia's parliament, and as both countries work to carry out a sweeping security agreement signed late last year.

Mr Albanese's visit could also coincide with a trip to Port Moresby by China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is expected to travel to PNG's capital shortly before him.

It is expected that while in Port Moresby, Mr Yi will have a bilateral meeting with his PNG counterpart, Justin Tkatchenko, and will also meet with Mr Marape.

It is not yet clear whether China's foreign minister will visit other Pacific nations, but Australian and US officials are monitoring his trip closely.

The timing of the trip is particularly sensitive because PNG's neighbour Solomon Islands will go to the polls the week before, and MPs will be beginning negotiations to form a new government while the foreign minister is in the region.

Beijing also remains intent on bedding down policing agreements with Pacific Island nations — most recently offering to assist Tonga with security for the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) leaders meeting in August.

The federal opposition says the development is deeply concerning, but PIF Secretary-General Henry Puna played down concerns while visiting Tonga this week, saying it was "not really an issue."

"Let's not be alarmed by outsiders, to change our thinking and to be involved in these geopolitical games," he said.

A pivotal campaign

The Kokoda Track campaign is considered an extraordinarily important period of World War II in Australian military history.

From July 1942, Australian and Papuan infantry battalions fought Japanese soldiers who were advancing toward Port Moresby.

Australian troops were forced to withdraw along the track before a counteroffensive.

More than 600 Australians were killed along the track, with more than 1,600 wounded and 4,000 dying from sickness.

In PNG's capital of Port Moresby, the Bomana War Cemetery contains more than 3,800 Commonwealth burials from World War II.

The Hong Kong government has licensed the broadcast rights to the Summer Olympic Games in Paris. It intends to relicense the rights to four TV broadcasters in the city – TVB, ViuTV, HOY TV and government-owned RTHK. While in most territories, broadcasters negotiate directly with the International Olympic Committee or its agents, the Hong Kong government previously intervened in bidding for rights to the Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021. It also organized large public screenings in shopping malls.

While the cost of the rights was not disclosed, Yeung said that the fee was lower than the rights for Tokyo. If correct, that may reflect the six-hour time difference between France and Hong Kong during the summer.

MALDIVES PLAY

Streamer Lionsgate Play has partnered with Maldives telecommunications company Dhiraagu , which caters to more than half a million customers, to provide its service in the country. Dhiraagu customers can now subscribe to Lionsgate Play’s mobile application through Dhiraagu eZone, the company’s entertainment and gaming platform, directly via Dhiraagu App.

“This collaboration marks a significant milestone as Dhiraagu customers will now become the first in Maldives to enjoy exclusive access to Lionsgate Play’s vast and exceptional content library,” said Mohamed Mirshan Hassan, director, brand and marketing communications at Dhiraagu.

“Our alliance with Dhiraagu in Maldives has further solidified our footprint in South Asia, fostering a deeper connection with the diverse audience in the Maldivian market,” added Rohit Jain, president, Lionsgate Play, Asia. In Asia, Lionsgate Play is also available in India, Indonesia, Philippines, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

TAIWAN AT CANNES

The initiative is backed by the island’s Ministry of Culture, under the 1plus4─T-content plan, the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival and the Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development.

DANCER, NUN

Filmmaker Sandeep Singh (“Main Atal Hoon”) will chronicle the life of the royal dancer Amrapali from the Republic of Vaishali in ancient India in a series that will trace her journey from being an imperial courtesan to finally renouncing all luxuries and adopting celibacy as a Buddhist nun. Ankita Lokhande (“Swatantra Veer Savarkar”) will portray Amrapali and Ismail Darbar (“Devdas”) will compose the music. Legend Studios is producing. Amprapali has been the subject of three Indian films and a series previously.

DISTRIBUTION

“Devara: Part 1,” headlined by “RRR” star NTR Jr , will be distributed theatrically across northern India by Indian media personality Karan Johar and Anil Thadani’s AA Films. Directed by Koratala Siva, “Devara” will unfold in two parts, with the initial chapter hitting theatres on Oct. 10, during the Eid holiday frame. The film is produced by Yuvasudha Arts and NTR Arts and presented by Nandamuri Kalyan Ram. The music is by Anirudh Ravichander and cinematography by R. Rathnavelu.

DOCUMENTARY DOSH
