Kickster by Trek

Kickster is the only balance bike Trek offers. It costs around $160 and it comes with 12″ wheels, so it’s suitable for kids who are roughly 34″-40″ tall. It’s the best bike for very young riders to learn how to ride, practice balance, and progress on their own terms.

Best for:  Toddlers who need to learn how to maintain balance on two wheels. 

Precaliber, Wahoo & Roscoe

Precaliber, Wahoo, Roscoe

Precaliber, Wahoo, and Roscoe are Kids’ MTB series with wider tires, rim or disc brakes, and rigid or suspended forks. Trek Roscoe is available only with 24″ wheels, whereas Precaliber and Wahoo can be bought with 16″, 20″, 24″, and even 26″ wheels. These kids’ bikes are excellent for both on and off-road riding , trips to school, family rides, and any other fun cycling activities.

Best for: Children of all ages who need versatile bikes that they can ride on paved and unpaved roads, as well as on bike paths.

Trek MT-201

The MT-201 pedal trailer can be attached to the parent’s bike in front and allows the child to tag along and practice balancing while pedaling. The saddle is fully adjustable and the trailer comes with a 20″ wheel that makes it suitable for children between 45″-52″ tall.

Best for:  Toddlers and preschoolers who still need to perfect their balancing skills but want to follow their parents anywhere they go.

If you have the money to spare, we recommend going for a new Trek bike that you will be able to sell for a decent chunk of the original price in the future, if you decide to do so.

I was interested in buying a used xcalibur 7 and it’s a woman’s model. I can’t find any differences in the mens and woman’s besides the seat and coil spring. Is the frame and everything else the same? Thanks

Trek is a bicycle manufacturer which has been active since 1976. They are a family-owned business from the USA who started out from a small red barn, producing 900 machines in their first year. That barn is still around, just along from their HQ.

They have had revenues reported to exceed over $1 billion per annum from sales of over a million machines and are established as a global cycling brand with main dealerships, authorised repairers and licensed outlets across the world. 

The company offers a huge range of different styles of bicycle and were early adopters of the e-bike model too. They are focused on always thinking about the next phase of their development. They offer clothing, helmets, lighting, accessories, mudguards / fenders, all through their in-house ranges.

We’ll have a little look into the journey the Trek brand has taken, some of the ups and downs and examine some of the values, qualities, messages and principles it brings to the production and sale of its bicycles in particular.

Is Trek a Good Bike Brand?

The aspects of a brand are what sets it apart from others. They provide stability, foundation and direction. Trek focuses on maintaining quality, they make their employees feel critical to the business and reward them with bonuses and incentives. Brand values help workers put in longer hours. 

A rewarded and well-compensated workforce makes fewer compromises. More of their products meet the high standards demanded from the brand. Their retail stores contain happier people to greet you. They feel invested in the company.

Once you have happy employees, you get more ideas about products, more of the right decisions are made and more people get on board with them and time and effort are saved in the production. Trek spends time caring about its employees.

Trek provided the bicycles for Lance Armstrong at times when he was winning the Tour de France. No doubt they saw increased demand during his moments of victory. The fallen hero saw his personal brand take a blow in subsequent years and it is likely that the company had to rebuild its reputation too.

During a time of heightened civil-rights tensions in the US, the company responded to scenes of their bicycles being used by police to control crowds of demonstrators. 

It made a commitment to creating jobs and investing in training and scholarship programmes and funding in underserved areas of the community. It also granted employees paid time off to volunteer in non-profit areas designed to build local communities.

The company has invested over the years in technology to help with the design of frames, geometry, suspension and components too.

They have acquired companies over the years and utilised the expertise and knowledge of similarly motivated pioneers like their own founders.

Gary Fisher and Keith Bontrager are two such radicals who lit up the early mountain biking scene in the USA whose companies have and now sit under the Trek umbrella.

Who Owns Trek Bike Company?

All research done indicates that it is Intrepid Corporation. When Trek was established, an investment of start-up money came via them. The key decisions and passions stem from the co-founders, Richard Burke and Bevill Hogg. Members of the Burke family hold senior positions today.

Why is Trek So Expensive?

It is a fact of commercial life that sometimes the best brands have a price tag attached to the values they highlight.

Rather than specialising in niche areas, Trek offers machines for all riders. This costs more than putting all your eggs in one basket. It invests in quality materials, new technologies and design methods. It runs hundreds of retail outlets around the world. Research and marketing come at a price.

Their trust in the products is the catalyst for their lifetime warranty on newer frame sets (frame and rigid fork), main frame and full suspension swing arms for the lifetime of the original owner and for their in house carbon wheels with carbon rims. Manufacturers have introduced part-carbon, part-alloy wheels so the distinction is necessary.

Clothing, parts and accessories, rear suspension linkage components, including bearings, rocker link and accompanying hardware and components, Bontrager wheels with alloy rims and paint and transfers have a two-year warranty package. Some of their kit made before 2019 also benefits from a warranty package.

They have aftercare for carbon materials and their customer service also supports good relationships and a culture of listening to you when you bring your bicycle in.

Are Trek Bikes Overpriced?

Trek bicycles are trusted and well thought of in their own country and worldwide. Negative views tend to be limited to brand decisions or sales decisions unrelated to manufacture or design. There are so many competitors to take sales away from Trek but this does not seem to affect them.

Their lowest full-price bicycle for Discerning Cyclists is the 2021 FX 1 Disc Hybrid bike , which retails for £475 ($500). The disc brakes inspire more confidence, it has internal cable routing for cleanliness and reduces the risk of damage.

The Trek Alpha Aluminum frame it uses is regularly reviewed and updated for strength and as an entry-level bicycle offers full mudguard / fender and rack compatibility,

Do Trek Bikes Keep Their Value?

With a good level of support via the warranty scheme which extends to secondary owners and a brand-leading reputation, Trek represents a good win for owners and prospective owners. 

Trek invests in frame geometry design and is innovative. They have a reputation for quality and comfort. Trusted around the world, they support pro teams to enhance the value of their products and they have a wide support network. This helps build confidence in their offer and supporting value.

Do Trek Bikes Go On Sale?

Like most manufacturers, when a specific line comes to an end, their prices will be reduced in order to help sales and move the inventory on. Trek has distribution licensing deals with independent bicycle retail outlets and these shops sell them at discounted prices too. 

Is a Trek Bike Worth the Money?

The long-standing nature of Trek in a competitive marketplace is a good sign of value for money.  Reviews and feedback about quality, lifespan and service build the whole package. Decisions made about downshifting to less expensive machines might be linked to other factors like use or budget.

Multiple Bontrager Line Pro 30 failures!

Multiple Bontrager Line Pro 30 wheel drive-ring failures. 3 on the 2017 to 2020 model. And now 2 on the 2021 to 2023. They lie about using new glue. They refuse to say there is a problem. It's been a full month for me now being caught up in a warranty process for the 2nd 2023 failure. This is because the warranty department doesn't check the wheels before they ship. This same department, lied about sending out a replacement wheel that they would personally make sure is true with PROPER spoke tension. Have written multiple emails and still no response! If you buy a Trek / Bontrager product, you will sadly be their guinea pig! I'd say their engineers are worthless and it's the "Trek" mechanics that are there to polish absolute Trek / Bontrager junk. So sad!

Cheap made in China rubbish

Hello . Went to my local Trek store to look at the new FX3 hybrid cycle. I was so disappointed with the build quality. The welding of the frame was shocking. I ask the assistant regarding this and he said the FX3 are made in China not Taiwan. I walked away . Cheap, nasty bike. Made in China. Regards Mr Harris

If They Can't Deliver The goods....

Two and a half weeks ago, I took my bike (4 year old Carrera Axle) to their bracknell store with a problem with my rear wheel. The on-site mechanic was highly competent and quickly identified the issue as a busted axle and a worn out chain. It was agreed that the bike would be serviced with the rear axle being replaced, a new chain and the rear cassette would be upgraded at the same time. The agreed time was 3 to 4 working days. Over the next two and a half weeks I received excuse after excuse with the latest from the socially awkward staff. Earlier in the week, I gave then a deadline of 23/03/2024 as I needed the bike back by that date. Then they admitted on 22/03/2024, that they haven't even started repairing my bike yet. This was the final straw and I told that I would collect my bike tomorrow and take to another bike shop, regardless of how many pieces that the bike was in. Avoid this shop at all costs. They make promises that they can't deliver and try to fob you off with ridiculous excuses. I am absolutely disgusted with the service at the Bracknell branch and will never use them again.

Not delivering their promise (yet again)

Yet again a crap service from Trek Benelux : ordered my bike (Trek Domane+ AL5) early January 2024, delivery was promised for April, then postponed till August, and now again to September (at earliest). Unacceptable, I used to buy a new bike almost every year, but now I'll cancel this order and will change definitely to another brand, due to the service from Trek Benelux, which is not the first time. Trek looses yet another loyal client due to their poor delivery commitment and internal mis-planning.

I arrived looking for a modest mountain…

I arrived looking for a modest mountain bike. The rep tried to sell me a £6,000 electric bike, and then a £1,800 mountain bike, and then implied I was looking for a kids bike when I said I was after something more reasonable for my use cases. The jokes on him because I actually had the budget but ended up paying only £300 for a bike elsewhere (Cycle King in Stony) previously listed at £600. It has everything I need - a lightweight frame, front suspension, 27.5 tyres, hydraulic disk brakes, 21 gears. What more do I need for my modest use cases? I got to spend hundreds more on accessories like my £90 bib shorts, £100 portable jet spray, saddle, mounted camera and case, phone case, pump, locks, chain tool and more! All for less than 1/3 of what Trek could apparently offer me. I'll never return to Trek. Taken it out 5-6 times and very happy with my £300 bike. Cheers!

Don't buy a Trek

I bought a trek slash for my son. This was purchased new and its an extremely disappointing bike. We ride together and my giant has done the same amount of work as his trek with no problems and the trek at 1 year old needed bearings, bottom bracket, new rear wheel, dropper post fixed, new chain and sprockets plus brake pads and tyres. I would NEVER buy another as they aren't worth the money

Cheaper components than advertised

Through a supplier I recieved a bike with cheaper components and one that doesn't fit properly (and makes the bike unrideable). I sent a note to Trek's customer service only to get a message saying they can just change parts. So you won't always get what you're paying for!

Brilliant service

Ordered something from another company which Royal Mail seem to have lost. The company couldn’t guarantee delivery in time after a second order so advised I go straight to Trek. They couldn’t have been more helpful. She understood the stress caused, suggested a solution, organised delivery for the next day, and checked in. Brilliant service

Horrible bike for the price

Brought a trek slash 8 brand new after a year I spent 2k on getting it fixed and it’s always rattling and all my mates that have trek have the same problems as me. For the price I payed it’s so disappointing it’s got way to much bontrager which is pretty bad and the bearing are awful.

Incredible customer service

waovv... I have had issues converting my tubular wheels to tubeless so I have ordered new set of wheels considering I might have got them damaged but the new ones had the same issue so I decided to call the customer service and waov.... Never had such a great after sale customer service experience since last few years. Tam S. has really been a great help from the first moment and I think this should be recognised.

Worst Quality Bike ever owned

Just the worst quality bike I’ve ever owned (Trek Domane) In 1 year I’ve had to replace The back wheel twice, The saddle bolt,The bottom bracket, The cassette, The chain, The back brakes, Both tyres and more that I’ve forgotten I’ve honestly spent more on the bike than what I paid for the bike It’s quite obvious that these are built with cheap components that wont last so the customer is forced to return time after time to get it fixed racking up more money on top of what was paid for the bike I’ve had no help from Trek (Battersea) as they say these are all wearable parts not covered under warranty so basically the only part that’s not wearable is the frame I would highly recommend you stay away from this company at all costs unless you want to spend more in the long run

I had a persistence problem with a trek mountain bike I purchased from a retailer. I was quite perturbed and perplexed by the whole matter. So I decided to go straight to the manufacturer Trek. Replacement bike provided by Trek

On June 30/22 the front fork of my 9 yr old Trek Neko broke. My wheel came off and I fell sustaining a dislocated pinky, fractures in my face and surgery to insert pins and plates. This never should have happened, such a freak thing. The good news is the response from Trek. The manufacturer warranty was past but they proceeded with an accident claim. They replaced my bike, I just received a Dual Sport 2. They were compassionate, professional and helpful. Looking forward to enjoying my new bike.

So far, so good. I’m 2 weeks into ownership of my Trek Roscoe 8 and it has already successfully carried me up & down the Purbeck Way, twice around Swinley Forest’s Blue & Red trails and alongside the River Thames. A noticeable improvement on my 10 yo old Giant bike. Bring it on!

Great bike servicing at Trek MK

Struggling to fit some notoriously difficult tubeless tyres to my Trek bike I eventually ran out of time - so gave up and handed it over to the mechanics at Trek's MK store. They managed to squeeze me in and fitted some new handlebar tape as well which I hadn't gotten around to. When collection day came I was half expecting a phone call admitting defeat - but instead the phone call was "all done, ready to collect". I do most routine bike servicing myself, but some jobs are worth paying the experts for. :-)

Contacted trek support for info on a respirator for trek exe 9.7, a passed to local bike shop who didn’t know, then passed back to trek who now decide they can do it, one month later and still no price, constant chasing up, iv given up.

bought a bike last Sunday ready for collection on the Wednesday. Will in the bristol store was amazing from first initial contact. rang on the off chance that there might be stock and found it had been reserved but took my number on the off chance as it hadn't been collected yet. with 10 minute had another call saying it was available. received great service in store from the whole team and felt safe and given amazing advice and tips. will defiantly be recommending trek to everyone and will keep up the good work.

Useless customer service and bad design

New Marlin 7 internal cables rattles like Christmas tree on the wind when riding. Apparently plastic clip missing on bottom of the frame to keep cables tightly. Asked customer service for any help. So called customer service "technical team leader" Matt Turner wants me to get the brand new bicycle to nearest service, only 40miles drive, to "maybe" fit mentioned earlier missing plastic worth about 3quid. That's absolutely unacceptable in 800pound bike. Got already GT Avalanche so same price tag bike and mentioned plastic is fitted and internal cables are quiet. No more money spent on Trek bikes coused by bad cheap design and ignorance of customer service. 🦆 Off!!!

The humble beginning of Trek bicycles took place in the "red barn" - once a carpet warehouse - in Waterloo, USA. The first bikes were steel touring frames , but within three years the brand had expanded substantially.

Eventually outgrowing the barn, Trek moved into a much larger headquarters - still in Waterloo - in the year 1980. From there it began to manufacture road racing bikes, then in 1983 created its first mountain bike before moving into accessories come 1984.

Having started out in steel, Trek moved into developing aluminium bikes in 1985. The first Trek branded full carbon frame came in 1989 - the Trek 5000 had a frame weight of 1.5kg. It was built by an outside manufacturer and discontinued after a year. Trek made its own efforts at carbon, with an in-house production, in 1992 to much greater success.

Now, Trek offers the Madone (aero bike), Domane (endurance bike), Emonda (lightweight race bike) and Checkpoint (gravel bike) as well as the Boone cyclocross and Speed Concept time trial machine.

Trek's carbon bikes have always used their own patented 'OCLV carbon' - this stands for Optimum Compaction Low Void. It believes this carbon creates the best compromise between low weight and high strength and stiffness.

Optimum Compaction refers to the way sheets of carbon are layered into the mould, and optimised via heat and pressure - in Trek's opinion the two treatments are administered to the perfect ratio. Low Void refers to the minimisation of space between the layers of carbon, which might otherwise reduce strength and durability.

In 1995, Trek opened an independent facility inWhitewater, Wisconsin. The idea being that the Waterloo factory would work in frame development only. For those who want to customise their ride, the'Project One' custom paint programme arrived in 2001.

Trek supported now disgraced American cyclist, Lance Armstrong, through his peak years. In 1997, it helped him sign with their sponsored team, US Postal Service Pro Cycling. He won his seven editions of the Tour de Frances on bikes bearing the brand name, but all of said wins were later taken from him following doping violations.

In 2014, the brand sponsored the Trek Factory Racing Team, now calledTrek–Segafredo. In that role, it provided bikes for high profile winners such as Fabian Cancellara and Alberto Contador,as well as Jens Voigt, and notably his Hour Record in September 2014.

In 2020, Trek continued to support the Trek-Segafredo men's and women's race outfits, two highly successful teams.

Trek's acquisitions

Over the years, Trek has made a number of high profile acquisitions. The most famous, perhaps, Gary Fisher bicycles - the mountain bike brand which it took over in 1993.

Later came Bontrager Cycles in 1995 and Electra Bicycle Company in 2014. Bontrager, now Trek's component and apparel brand, maintains the same name as does Electra, the creator of leisure bikes and accessories.

Trek's road bike models

Trek is able to offer a wide range of different bikes, each tuned to a slightly different purpose. Some model families are available in a selection of standards (SLR premium carbon, SL carbon, ALR premium aluminium and AL aluminium), and then these come with assorted levels of componentry to suit your price bracket.

To add even more depth to the range, Trek offers many models in two different 'fits'. The Madone and Émonda come as standard in an H2 (traditional) fit, but there are versions in what it calls 'H1' fit. This is more aggressive, shaving off about 30mm on the head tube to create a longer, lower ride. The Domane comes in an H2 'Endurance' fit, with a few models in 'Pro Endurance', again with a longer and lower stance on offer.

The Trek Domane was introduced in 2012. It was created to offer a comfortable ride, the key feature being an IsoSpeed decoupler which separated the seat tube from the top tube, thus reducing vibrations and fatigue.

In 2016 it gained theFront IsoSpeed, which helps to reduce vibrations at the front end without impacting handling. This came alongside a new slider, which alters the level of dampening offered by the rear.

In its most recent update , the Domane took notes from the Madone with an aero fork profile, whilst becoming more versatile thanks to clearance for 38mm tyres (without mudguards, 35mm with). It also gained a downtube compartment for stashing tools (or snacks!).

Though comfort is important to the Trek Domane, it's still a racing frame, and its prowess has been demonstrated by UCI WorldTour riders at major one-day Classics, such as Strade Bianche and the Tour of Flanders. The top Domane bikes come with an H1.5 fit, which was developed with the Trek-Segafredo teams to offer the optimal balance between aerodynamics and endurance.

The Trek Domane - available as a men's build or with women's specific componentry - is a fast selling model, which comes in a range of frame materials.

The Domane SLR uses the lightest carbon Trek offers, the SL is one step down, whilst the AL uses aluminium and is the cheapest of the range.

Trek Madone

The Trek Madone is quite another beast, and the bikes come built for men and women; the latter's models with women's saddles and narrower handlebars . With an aggressive geometry and stiffness to boot, it's a road race hero, and aerodynamics have become part of its lifeblood. When we tested five aero bikes , head to head, the Trek Madone came out fastest.

Modern Trek Madone's feature a high level of integration, with the cables tucked away yet reachable via an access point at the top of the down tube.Wind tunnel testing has helped Trek to create theirKVF (Kammtail Virtual Foil) tube shapes, used on the frame and fork. These unconventional tube shapes are designed to further reduce drag, helping the rider/bike unit to slice through the air efficiently.

Because being bumped around doesn't make you faster, the Madone also features an IsoSpeed decoupler at the seat tube and more recently an adjustable one at the head tube, which offers greater compliance whilst still being integrated to prevent adding drag.

The newest model, according to Trek, can offer 17 per cent more compliance through to 21 per cent more stiffness, depending upon your chosen setting. A damper at the seatpost is also said to cut rebound by 13 per cent. All of these stats add up to a bike that can be comfortable and stiff at the same time - and one that earned a place in our 2018 Editor's Choice awards.

The majority of the bikes come in a more relaxed 'H2' geometry, save for the Madone SLR, which is in an 'H1.5' fit - this is designed to allow riders to achieve an H1 fit or an H2, depending upon their set up.

Trek Émonda

Adding more depth to the Trek family is the Trek Émonda, launched in 2014. Designed to be a climbing bike, newer adaptations are capable of negotiating mixed terrains - with disc brakes available and tyre clearance to 28mm.

Trek continues to work on developing the Émonda, dropping the weight of the top end Trek Émonda SLR to 640g in a size 56cm (665g with discs) and 1091g for the Trek Émonda SL (1149g with discs). The weight difference is largely achieved by the use of700 Series OCLV carbon on the SLR, as opposed to 500 series on the SL.

The aluminium model has seen some major work and the result earned it a place in the Editor's Choice 2019 awards. The key characteristic we loved was the way it simply didn't look, or ride, like aluminium. A lot of this is down to Trek's 'Invisible Weld Technology' which increases the surface area of the frame, adding to strength and reducing weight. The ALR model's frame weight comes in at a competitive 1112g, or 1131g with discs, and it uses the brand's 300 Series Alpha Aluminium.

The carbon models are available in 'SLR' build or 'SL', the former being the lightest and the latter more affordable. The majority of Trek Émonda bikes cone in an 'H2' fit, but they can be purchased in an 'H1' geometry, if you choose the top end 'Race Shop' version.

There are a few nods to neatness and integration around, such as the use of 'Blendr Integration' which seamlessly mounts Bontrager’s cycling computer, Ionbike lights or even Garmin computers directly to the handlebars. On SLR versions there's ‘Control Freak Cable Management’ which allows for shifter and brake cables to be housed through the frame.

Trek Checkpoint

With gravel and adventure bikes a fast growing category, the Checkpoint is Trek's offering to fill that sector. The crucial element here is that both the SL and ALR frame options come fitted out with 35c gravel tyres, and can accommodate rubber up to 45c. They've all got internal cable routing, to ensure much stays out, whilst the higher end models use 'Control Freak' routing which is neater.

If you opt for the carbon SL model, you get vibration dampening from an IsoSpeed decoupler at the rear, too.  To provide stability and confidence on light trails as well as comfort on all-day adventures, the geometry is not as aggressive as the road bikes elsewhere in the range. Such all-day rides warrant plenty of kit, so there's mounts for racks and mounts. Similar to elsewhere in the range, there's AL, ALR and SL models.

Trek Speed Concept

Trek's Speed Concept time trial bike has been raced by the pros yet is still seen on the amateur race scene as a popular option.

The frames use 500 Series OCLV Carbon, boasting the KVF (Kammtail Virtual Foil) tube shapes described in the Madone, plus a carbon fork with integrated brake and stem - the key goal being cutting through the air quickly.There's space to fit Trek's SC Draft Box and SC Sped Box, largely used by triathletes carrying snacks.

Trek's got plenty of experience in the muddy realm of off-road cycling - and they've got a selection of cyclocross bikes. The Trek Boone 7 model comes with hydraulic disc brakes, a one-by crank and 12-speed cassette and they've all got Bontrager's own 33c cyclocross tyres.

The frame material is Trek's 600 series OCLV carbon, and there's front and rear IsoSpeed decouplers to help riders negotiate the mud without excess transfer of vibration. Combining the mud ready tyres, disc brakes, 'cross focused cable routing and geo into an aluminium package is the Trek Crockett family.

They key differentiation is the frame material, which is300 Series Alpha Aluminium, and there's no decoupler. However, it's still a performance bike that's ready to race.

A hybrid bike can and will mean different things to different people. But sometimes it is simply the bike that fills the gaps, that doesn't do any one thing but in fact does it all. Purists may scoff and say to compromise is to ruin the essence of life: if you are not something, you are nothing. But Trek has offered a repost: if you can't be something, be everything.

That certainly appears to be the aim of the Trek FX 2 Disc Equipped. It's the jack-of-all-trades, odd-jobber of a bike. It comes, as the name suggests, fully loaded with a pannier rack, lights, mudguards and even a kickstand but what elevates it to a place among the best budget hybrid bikes available today is that, as part of Trek's fitness range, all that versatility does not come at the cost of all rideability. 

And that's a crucial element. Just because a bike has more practical functions – going to the shops, commuting, family bike rides etc – doesn't mean it can't be fun, have its own personality and leave us looking forward to running that next errand.

Trek's FX range of bikes is quite extensive, starting at the £500.00/$599.99 FX 1 and going all the way to the full-carbon £3,050.00/$2,799.99 FX Sport 6. The FX 2 is available with a step-through frame – in both the Equipped and standard versions – and has been updated for 2023, with the main difference from the 2021 model being a move from a 3x8 to a 2x9 gearing system.

The FX 2 Disc Equipped is priced at £740.00 - it's not currently available in the USA - which is £90 more than the FX 2 Disc standard (£650.00/$799.99) which foregoes the rack, lights, mudguards and kickstand. Although it does come in a couple of extra colour options.

Design and specification

Recognising alloy frames' bad reputation for comfort compared to steel and carbon, Trek set itself a goal to "build more compliant frames that retain the acceleration and affordability that have always made aluminium popular" – and it is the fruit of that labour that the FX 2 Disc Equipped is designed around. 

The Alpha Gold Aluminium frame, while not the lightest, does offer a great balance between responsiveness and comfort. It is also strong: according to Trek, the FX 2 Disc can take weights of up to 136kg (for bike, rider, and cargo combined), which fares well compared to other hybrid bikes in the same class such as the Merida Speeder 200 (120kg) and Scott Sub Cross 50 (128kg). The pannier rack that comes with it is also very solid and suitable for carrying loads up to 25kg despite weighing less than 600g itself.

My size large test bike as a whole weighed in at 13.4kg with pedals. The rack, lights, mudguards, and kickstand account for just over a kilogram of that weight but it's still a touch on the heavy side for a fixed-frame hybrid in this price range. 

While the focus is on the practicality of the frame, it is by no means ugly – especially when stripped of all the accessories – with internal cable routing, a gentle curve to the top tube that is reminiscent of the Specialized Sirrus (one of the classic beauties of the hybrid world) and the choice of a striking Viper Red or classy Lithium grey colourway. The geometry is pretty much what you would expect from a hybrid, with perhaps a slightly longer chainstay length adding to its stability. It is not as upright as, say, the Sirrus but similar to the Cannondale Quick 3 – which is a good bike to use as a comparison in general.

Like the Quick 3, the Trek FX 2 comes with a Shimano Acera/Altus 2x9 drivetrain and has an integrated mounting system in the stem, as well as the ability to track cadence and other metrics using an integrated wireless sensor. 

Trek's Blendr stem system is designed for easy installation of computers, lights and other accessories to your cockpit. It does, rather annoyingly, require an additional base to be purchased (which plugs into the stem) and then a further mount for the specific accessory (which attaches to the base) but that does allow for a wide range of options to suit all needs.  

The DuoTrap S is a Bluetooth/ANT+ sensor that integrates into the chainstay and wirelessly transmits to a smartphone or computer to track cadence and other metrics. Again, it requires a separate purchase, but the frame is set up for it to be attached without the need for zip wires or other ungainly fasteners.   

Trek has made an effort to include ergonomic grips on the FX 2 Disc Equipped, although they are a little on the basic side, especially compared to those on the more expensive models in the FX range. 

The lights, however, are far more impressive, particularly the AXA Greenline 35 headlight. USB-charging, it has a wide beam, is also designed to be visible from the side and is discreetly mounted on the top of the fork, which avoids cluttering the cockpit.

The Tektro HD-R280 hydraulic disc brakes are pretty standard now for mid-range hybrids. My test bike came with Bontrager H2 Comp 700x32c tyres but with the mudguards fitted there is room for up to 35mm and Bontrager H2 Hard-Case Light 700x35c tyres are listed as an option on the spec sheet. Without the mudguards, Trek says the frame can accommodate tyres up to 38mm in width.

Performance

Trek deserves credit here for really delivering on its aim of a responsive-yet-compliant frame. It's one thing coming up with the jargon, but another bringing it to fruition at a genuinely affordable price. While the FX 2 Disc Equipped might come across as a bit of a plodder on paper, in reality, it has a surprising amount of responsiveness. Loaded up with a carry pack on top of the pannier rack, I was happy overtaking other cyclists on reasonably fast country roads, knowing I had the acceleration to get past and back across to the side of the road in ample time.

Yes, it's no speed demon – it doesn't have the playfulness of the Boardman URB 8.9 or the lightweight climbing ability of the Merida Speeder 200, two bikes at a similar price point – but where it completely outscores both is in comfort and stability, even with a rack, mudguards, light, kickstand all bolted on. 

Interestingly enough, I took it for a ride with all those added extras stripped off and, while significantly lighter – making an obvious difference on climbs – there was not a huge noticeable change in its performance on the flat. 

My test bike came with a slightly-different-to-advertised Microshift Marvo front derailleur instead of Acera T3000, which is roughly equivalent, and I had no issues with it. However, as a whole, I did find the drivetrain to be under-par for a fitness bike. It's perfectly functional and will get you pretty much wherever you need to go, but it is a little clunky and I noted that the next bike up in the FX range, the FX 3 Disc Equipped , comes with a 10-speed Shimano Deore groupset which, in my experience, is a huge step up in performance. 

In particular, I could not get to grips with the drastic change when switching chainrings on the 46/30 chainset. If I didn't downshift on the 4th sprocket or earlier I found myself spinning out – and this is perhaps a rare example of the FX 2 Disc Equipped coming a little unstuck wanting to satisfy in all areas. That 16-tooth difference in the chainrings (the same difference as a 50/34 compact road chainset, for example) means the bike has the range to get up steep hills while also having enough gas on the flats, but the user experience is compromised a little in doing so. 

Where it doesn't compromise, however, is in its comfort and handling, whether I took it on potholed roads, bike paths, or light gravel it felt so balanced and stable. I was even happy taking it on the grassy, rutted track of a nearby nature reserve – and this was all with the standard 32 mm tyres it came with. Even when there was a little rattling, you could tell it was coming from the rack, fenders, and lights rather than the frame. 

Taking it out at night in light rain did little to change my faith in its dependability and the lights were superb, particularly the wide-beam fork-mounted headlamp – a marked improvement from the usual glorified-torch-on-the-handlebars setup I usually use. Neither front nor rear light offered an intermittent option but, having been driven to distraction on long night rides behind blinking bulbs in the past, that was no great loss to me.

I took the Trek FX 2 Disc Equipped on rides around the countryside, trips to the shops, rides with the kids, rides at night, in the rain, for exercise, for errands and more, and on every occasion, it delivered. It is solid and dependable without feeling clunky or cumbersome. It's not sexy but it's not ugly. It's not overly fun but it's no chore to ride.

It will do what it needs to do in almost every situation you will need a hybrid bike for. Not necessarily to the highest level, but to a high enough level that you won't feel like you are missing out. 

Yes, I did find the Altus/Acera groupset to be restrictive in terms of performance but drivetrains can be upgraded, along with wheels and grips and seatposts etc. Having a top frame is such a great building block. I would stress, however, this frame still has a ceiling to what it can do as a fitness bike, even if it were upgraded in all those areas. It is built for sturdiness as much as anything else and the fact that its performance was similar with and without the rack, fenders, kickstand et al is quite telling. I'm not going to use it to take on the Brecon Beacons in the Dragon Ride but I might choose it over a more expensive performance-oriented bike for a long-distance overnight ride such as the Dunwich Dynamo , where comfort, stability and safety are the overriding priorities.

Trek Warranty/Customer Service Experience?

What's you guys experience with Trek when it comes to warranty stuff? I ask because I am really struggling to stay on board the Trek train. I bought a ProCal and within 300 miles the rear wheel bearings were shot. I was wanting carbon wheels anyways so I took it as a good opportunity to buy a set of Kovee 23 wheels. That was November 8th. Since then the original stock wheel has been at the shop. Trek first sent the wrong bearings. Then the shop discovered the end cap was damaged as well. Trek has sent 3 different end caps, all of them were the wrong one and did not fit. I STILL don't have a stock rear wheel. Now, I broke the rear Kovee hoop 2 weeks ago. I go to my Trek shop and he calls them up. They are going to warranty it for the 200$ replacement fee listed in their wheel protection agreement. Since I don't have the Kovee OR the stock wheel, the rep said they would just ship a new Kovee and new stock wheel (since they can't figure out what parts to ship for the original one) at the same time. He was on speaker, so I heard with my own ears they were shipping out last Monday, January 15th. Fast forward to today. It has been 3+ months with no stock wheel and 2 weeks with no replacement carbon wheel. Does Trek always suck this bad? Or am I just this unlucky?:madman:

I have had only very good experiences with Trek warranties. I have had three warranties issues on an old '12 OCLV Superfly 100 frame: 1. delamination in the seat tube--replaced front triangle in about a week. 2. creaked chainstay right behind the chain wheel (this happened twice)--both times replaced in about a week. That frame was notorious for problems. But it did ride well! It could be your shop's relationship with Trek. Perhaps they have an outstanding balance owed to Trek for bikes and/or parts. Bike manufactures don't like to continue supporting bike shops that owe them money. (It is important to note, that I don't know you or your shop and this is pure speculation on my part.) Maybe it is time to see if your bike shop can contact the Trek outside rep. They often have more information and can get things moving along, that is if the relationship between the rep, the shop, and Trek are all in good standing. The last option is to take the whole mess to a different Trek bike shop and see if they can do something to get you back on your bike asap. Even if that other shop is in a different town nearby, it could be worth the effort. Another option is to call Trek customer service directly yourself. Know that this is not normally received well by your LBS. It undermines that relationship. Trek is one of the largest bike manufacturers in the world. Because of their scale, sometimes things fall through the cracks. That is part of the reason it is so important to have a good relationship with your LBS and they in turn have a good relationship with their suppliers. Trek generally has a good staff working, both in house as well as representing their line as outside reps. Good luck and in the future, consider some different wheels made by someone other that Trek! Haha!

It sounds like the issue is not Trek, but your local shop. I’ve had nothing but good experience with Trek, and have heard numerous stories of Trek replacing wheels and frames when in marginal circumstances. ANY Trek authorized dealer can handle warranties. I had my 9.8 frame replaced with an upgraded 9.9 frame/ shock after discovering a few small cracks around the seat/top tube junction. Trek, along with my LBS were excellent. I had an answer within a few hours and my new frame at the shop and built up all within about 4 days. I’ll forever stay with Trek because of my experience and I can be confident spending my money on their brand. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have to say that my warranty experiences with Trek have been excellent. The issues involved blown shocks, bad wheel bearings, and bad pivot bearings on two different bikes. Sorry you're running into obstacles.

Definitly a shop issue. This is not typical of Trek Warranty. I process a number of warranties through Trek every year (for the last 18 years) and have never had a situation like this. I tend to stay on top of my claims though, and call Trek if things aren't happening fast enough for my liking. I also double check through the tech site to make sure I'm getting the right parts.

My experience with Trek across 3 bikes, Superfly FS, Fuel Ex and Remedy has been nothing short of exemplary.. they usually decide quickly and get the new item to the LBS in short order. My only delays have been waiting for 9.9 frame parts to be made, painted and sent to the LBS. All fitting has been at their expense and comms have been good. I had a problem with a set of Line Pro 30 wheels and they replaced them too... It's been a factor for me on MTB's so getting warranty items resolved makes a difference. The LBS relationship makes a difference in my view....

I work P/T in a trek shop. I have seen them cover stuff that was at best questionable and at worst an outright lie. They have the best coverage in the business in my opinion. They are usually faster than this though. We at our shop will keep the customer informed on issues like this.  

Only one frame issue in 31 years of riding Treks. Painless exchange. I will only buy new Treks. Local shop stands behind anything. Not cheap but worth it.

2016 Farley 9.6 was my first Trek, I love the bike but the freehub has failed 3x. The pawls blow. I've had the bike 1.5 years and they just warrantied the hub again. So, shitty hub but awesome of Trek to stand behind it. They also warrantied the frame, with a matching fork.  

I have had a couple warrant claims with frames and components over the years and Trek has been fantastic. My local bike shop West Michigan Bike & Fitness has been amazing in helping me and I think this is the key to getting things done quickly with any manufacturer when you have an issue.

Local shop and Trek came through for me when I cracked the frame on my '16 Fuel EX 9.8. Trek gave me a couple of options, and I went with a credit value of above blue book on the 9.8 toward a '18 Trek. I went down two notches in the model line, so the credit will cover a whole new bike plus a couple of upgrades. Bike is on the way as we speak. Whole process took less than two weeks. With service like this I'm sticking with Trek as long as they keep making bikes I like. FWIW Trek would have replaced the frame with an '18 9.8, but there were many compatibility issues. They said they would cover the cost of new parts, but I would have ended up with a mix of old and new parts. The bike was old enough that some of the older wear items I would be keeping were due for replacement or service. New bike with all new warranties at no out of pocket expense sounder better to me.

Hey all - wanted to resurrect this thread and get some advice - I hit up against some rocks and put 2 cracks in my '17 Slash. I submitted for crash replacement through LBS and was offered 20% off MSRP for a new frame + I would have to pay shipping, a LBS handling fee and tax (I'm assuming this is taxed although I didn't explicitly ask - and tax her is 8.5%), so I would have to pay over $3300 to crash replace a $3600 a frame that is a year old! I wasn't expecting a free frame or anything, but 20% off full retail + fees does not really seem to be taking care of your customers. I could just wait for a demo day or sale and get a much better deal. Researching the interwebz, it seems like many Trek crash replacements and especially other bike companies have taken care of their customers much better than this - I see a lot of 20% off dealer cost (which I believe is 20% off $2500, a much more generous crash replacement that is actually taking care of a customer). How do I get these more generous crash replacements? Do I bypass the LBS and contact Trek directly? Also, I do have a couple industry contacts, but I hate calling in favors and giving them more work to do on my behalf unless it would make a huge difference, which may be worth it in this situation. Thanks for your advice!

A super-efficient bike that shreds down hills

Its values may be hyper-local and American, but it’s now a company at the center of a globalized cycling market that has made industry-leading technological advances.

A recent example of Trek’s “industry-leading technological advances” mentioned above is IsoSpeed, which is available at the front and rear on certain Trek models. The rear decoupler is at the junction of the seat and top tube, and the front decoupler is located at the top of the headset.

The front IsoSpeed decoupler allows the fork steerer tube to flex more than it would with a fixed upper headset cup, which helps damp some impacts. The rear IsoSpeed decoupler provides increased vertical seat tube deflection (compared to a traditional fixed seat tube design) for a smoother ride. The rear IsoSpeed system is adjustable on the latest Madone and Domane models, which lets the rider adjust the compliance level for terrain and or personal preference. You might not even need to adjust the rear slider to experience the road-smoothing effects of the two decouplers—our test team found that the all-over effect was fast and smooth performance equally suited to asphalt and cobbles.

Famed Classics specialist Fabian Cancellara, who retired from racing as a member of World Tour team Trek-Segafredo, worked with Trek engineers to develop the final version of IsoSpeed, which is especially useful on the cobbles and other rough surfaces that riders encounter on most Classics courses. Since the tech’s 2012 release on the Domane, Trek has claimed that IsoSpeed doesn’t sacrifice power transfer at the cost of more compliance.

Along with bolstering its ride-smoothing technologies, Trek has also begun implementing internal-storage compartments in the downtube of some of its road and mountain bikes. These handy “trap doors” debuted in the new Domane and Fuel EX, where an included organizer roll has pockets for a tube, CO2 cartridge, inflator head, and tire lever.

The SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain, with a 30t chainring and 10-50t cassette, gives a massive range of gears and plenty of low-range options for easing the pain of climbing steep hills. Its 27.5-inch wheels are maneuverable in tight, technical terrain, and the 2.8-inch tubeless-ready tires offer great traction and a plush ride. The RockShox Judy Silver fork has plenty of travel for getting rowdy (1oomm for size the extra-small frame size, 120mm for small through large) and can be locked out for more efficient off-trail riding. Its cables are internally routed, too, which isn’t common on bikes at this price. It has a 2x9-speed Shimano drivetrain, which strays from the single-chainring trend that’s popular on off-road bikes at the moment but also provides plenty of gearing options. And even though the RockShox XC30 100mm coil-spring fork is heavier than some comparable air-spring models, it does a surprisingly good job on super-rocky trails. Add to that the 2.2-inch-wide Bontrager tires on 29-inch Bontrager Connection rims, which never squirmed too much on sketchy terrain, and you have a bike that not only looks fast but offers the kind of sharp handling and precise steering you’d expect from higher-priced racing models.

And based on our rides, it’s the closest yet to that best-of-both-worlds machine with 60mm of rear travel. Trek’s IsoStrut design places a Fox Float shock into a tube—both ends of that tube are bolted to the underside of the SuperCal’s top tube. At the top of the seat stays is a sleeve (Trek calls it a carriage) that slides over the bolted-in tube. Cutouts in the tube allow a cross bolt to pass through the sleeve, the tube, and the rear shock eyelet. Trek says this design eliminates rotation around the shock shaft and prevents side-loading the shaft so the bike has the stiffness and feel of a hardtail, but with real full suspension for better comfort and control. And based on back to back testing with a hardail, the Supercaliber is everything it was designed to be.

Trek did a masterful job with this bike, skimping in the right places to save money and splurging in the areas that count for performance. The carbon frame is extremely lightweight; our size XL test bike weighed in at only 21.6 pounds. The IsoSpeed decoupler at the junction of the seat tube and top tube offers so much vertical compliance you can actually see the seat tube moving if you bounce on the saddle. Tubeless-ready Bontrager Kovee Elite 23 carbon wheels also keep weight in check and roll very quickly when wrapped in (stock) 2.2-inch Bontrager XR2 Team Issue tires. Be warned, though, these are race-day tires for dry conditions and not well suited to daily trail riding or muddy courses. SRAM’s GX Eagle drivetrain and alloy SRAM X1 Eagle crank keep cost in check and can stand up to plenty of hard riding and abuse. They do add significant weight, though, which makes this bike’s overall lightness all the more impressive. Our tester was surprised, however, to find a narrow 720mm handlebar. He said it felt strange at first but didn’t notice it anymore after a few minutes of riding.

The good looks of the Domane AL 2 are the first indication that Trek didn’t mess around with this bike. Start digging deeper and you’ll find even more to like. The shaped aluminum frame is nicely made and has a vibration-damping carbon fork. The rims are tubeless-ready so you can upgrade to smoother-rolling tires filled with puncture sealant. And new for 2021, the Domane AL 2 is outfitted with disc brakes. That does come with a bump in price—the previous version with rim brakes was only $860. But if you ride in variable weather conditions, the more reliable performance from disc brakes may save your bacon. The shifters snick-snick the drivetrain through the gears lightly and crisply. There are other little surprising nuggets, like the pocket in the frame for a speed sensor and the included light and computer mount that cleanly integrates into the stem. Best of all, the bike is a joy to ride. Handling is stable, precise, and attentive to pedal strokes so you feel like you’re flying over the road, not pushing across it.

While the 2019 Top Fuel featured 100mm of travel in the front and back, the new top-of-the-line Top Fuel 9.9 has 120mm of front suspension and 115mm in the rear. Trek also did away with the floating mount that compressed the shock from both ends. Instead, the lower eyelet is fixed to the downtube, a change that reduces weight and improves stiffness. Tires are also beefed up. Instead of skinny race-oriented ones, this model comes with 29x2.40-inch Bontrager XR3 Team Issue rubber designed for a variety of riding conditions. Gnar capability is further enhanced thanks to a frame that’s slacker and longer. And it’s spec’d with a shorter stem and wider bars.

Review: Trek FX+ 2

If you come to me and say, “I’ve never ridden an electric bike before,” I am probably going to take a few factors into consideration. The first is safety. If you’ve never built a bike, I’m probably not going to recommend a mail-order one you have to assemble yourself. You don’t want to discover that you've failed to tighten a screw when you’re going 20 miles per hour down a hill.

You also probably want a bike that’s reasonably priced, comfortable, and convenient to ride. In fact, you might want one that’s as close to your first human-powered bike as possible. Trek’s FX+ 2 hits all the sweet spots. It’s made by a reputable manufacturer with a wide retailer network. The reasonable base price includes all the commuter components, like integrated lights and fenders. Most importantly, it’s light and maneuverable.

It’s not a 65-pound “starter” ebike that will crush you if you stop on a hill or forget to charge the battery. Nor is it a smart bike that makes you spend 20 minutes walking through an app before you can ride it. I've been testing ebikes at home for years, and this is the first one my 60-year-old dad has felt comfortable grabbing and using to chase after my kids. “Sometimes I don’t even turn it on,” he remarked the other day. That’s the whole point.

Trek FX 2 electric bike

The FX+ 2 comes in two configurations and three different sizes. The default model has a regular step-over top tube, and the FX+ 2 Stagger has a step-through top tube. Both come in a variety of colors and have small, medium, and large sizes. I’m 5'2" and the small-size Stagger fits me well. However, if you’re smaller than 5 feet, you might want to look at a different bike.

The cables, battery, and motor are inside the frame. The only clue the FX+ 2 Stagger is an ebike at all is a small unit with only three buttons on it: a power button, and plus and minus symbols. When you turn on the bike, its lights turn on, and two light meters show how much battery you have left and what level of pedal assistance you have toggled on.

That’s it. There’s no bright LCD display and no throttle. This might seem like a downside, but I use my electric bike for commuting and running errands. When I lock it up on a rack, it gives me peace of mind to know that no one’s going to spot a lone ebike in the wild and immediately try to steal it (or the battery).

I also appreciate the clarity in the controls. I’ve tried other electric bikes with a one-button toggle, but I could never remember how many times to press the button to toggle the level of assist, or what light indicated how much battery I had left.

The FX+ 2 has a 250-watt Hydrive rear hub motor, which is the European standard. That might seem slightly underpowered to Americans looking to power up huge hills, but the bike is so light and maneuverable that having a smaller motor doesn’t matter much at all. The medium frame size weighs 40 pounds—almost 30 pounds lighter than my own Tern GSD S00.

Not only is it easy to scootch up hills, it’s also easy to maneuver onto crowded bike racks when I’m out, or to lift onto our hanging bike rack in my garage. Also, for the past two weeks, it’s the first bike both my dad and I have grabbed to run errands around the neighborhood. The stated range is 35 miles, but we’ve put at least 10 miles on it by now, and the battery seems largely untouched. The fast 45c road tires didn’t hurt, either.

It does lack a few features we're used to seeing on higher-end ebikes by now, like a low-maintenance carbon belt drive or a continuously variable shifter. Instead, it has a regular bike chain on a nine-speed Shimano shifting system, with a derailleur that, yes, you may have to adjust occasionally.

But honestly, this was more than fine by me. I didn’t have to learn a new shifting system or figure out how to calibrate the gearing with the assist levels. I wasn’t riding a bike that was trying to predict how much assist I’d need and when—I could simply toggle on more or less as I rode. In that way, it felt much easier and more natural. 

It also has a lot of accessories that may be equally important, especially as the weather here in Oregon has grown cold, gray, and wet in the past few weeks. The 120-lumen headlamp is incredibly bright. The bell is incredibly loud. The fenders have kept my jeans relatively dry, and I’ve been able to bungee items onto the rear rack. A kickstand keeps it up in the garage for quick access, and hydraulic disc brakes work even when the rain is pouring down.

The price point may seem high compared to direct-to-consumer bikes from Aventon, Lectric, or Rad Power. But once you start adding up the cost of quality components, labor, and accessories, their prices start inching up. Mail-order companies are able to offer much lower prices on base models because their motors are cheaper. With a nicer motor, a mail-order bike like the Ride1Up Prodigy is priced comparably to the FX+ 2, and you have to assemble and safety-check it yourself.

Over the years, I’ve seen bicycle manufacturers debate and then struggle to add or subtract features that will make electric bikes more attractive to people who haven’t biked before. Extremely low step-throughs! Weird shifting systems! Apps! Huge tires! Maybe the best way to get people on an electric bike is the same way you get people on a regular bike—by making it fun, light, and easy to ride.

The Trek FX+ 2 feels like a bike. Trek has definitely made an effort for this city-focused eBike to look and feel like a bike as much as possible and in that effort, it succeeded. The FX+ 2 felt like riding a traditional bicycle until you really turn on the pedal assist, and even then it still largely kept that feel. At around 40 pounds, it also is closer in weight to a traditional bicycle, at least compared to the competition. I was able to get it up and down stairs without breaking a sweat, which was convenient.

For all these successes, the $2,399 FX+2 is significantly more expensive than our best budget electric bike , t he Aventon Soltera ($1,399) or our best overall electric bike , t he Rad Power RadCity 5 Plus ($1,999). This despite the FX+ 2 having no throttle, no LCD display and no removable battery. As enjoyable as riding it may be — and it is — it’s tough to recommend it over the competition.

The Trek FX+ 2 came out in May 2022 at a starting price of $2,200, but the version we reviewed came with a price tag of $2,399. Unfortunately, it looks like the price has gone up since launch, with the 2023 models of the FX+ 2 coming in at $2,499 on Trek’s website.

The good news is that you are not forced to buy the FX+ 2 from Trek. Trek offers its bikes through local retailers in addition to its website, and those retailers may offer lower (or higher) prices than Trek. So make sure to check with your local bike shop before adding the FX+ 2 to your cart.

Trek offers the FX+ 2 eBike in four sizes (S, M, L, XL) and three colors: Satin Trek Black, Viper Red and Satin Mulsanne Blue. The model I was provided with was a Satin Mulsanne blue in size L, which worked perfectly with my 6-foot 2-inch height and 32-inch inseam.

At first glance, the FX+ 2 looks like a traditional bicycle. That’s because Trek has intentionally designed it this way, with the cables and battery stored within the tubes of the bike. Unfortunately, that means the battery isn’t removable — at least by you. Trek says that the battery can be removed by a trained technician, so you’ll need to head to a shop if anything goes wrong.

That said, you can still add an external battery for extra range. There are two water bottle holders, one on the seat tube and one on the down tube, and the one on the downtube allows for a 250Wh plug-and-play Range Extender battery. This allows you to easily double your range if needed. That battery life comes at a price though; the Hyena Range Extender Battery costs $499.

Designed for commuters and city bikers, the FX+ 2 comes already equipped with some much-needed accessories. The eBike comes stock with a front fender, rear fender, headlight, taillight, kickstand, bell and rear bike rack — no need to buy one of the best bike lights separately. There’s also a chain guard to prevent clothes from getting caught in the chain.

Still, there are a couple of things missing in the design that would be nice to have. First, the Hyena pedal assist control system has an LED display for the battery status and pedal assist mode. It is easy to use and read, but many eBikes now have LCD displays, so this feels cheap by comparison. Additionally, the wheels are not quick-release, which means if something goes wrong you’ll need tools on you to get the wheels off.

But the biggest design flaw is the lack of any shock absorption in the bike. The FX+ 2 definitely feels every bump and pothole, especially at top speed. Even merely adding a seat post shock absorber would be a welcome addition.

The performance of the Trek FX+ 2 was more than adequate. Between the three power modes (Eco, Normal and Turbo) and the nine-speed rear cassette, I was able to hit the top speed of 20 mph frequently, regularly averaging 13MPH while riding through the streets of Atlanta.

Hills were also not a problem once you get a feel for the bike. I could regularly keep my cadence going up hills by using the full range of the bike’s gears and the Turbo pedal assist mode. The pedal assist modes kicked in very smoothly and with almost no lag.

The only shortcoming the FX+ 2 really has in terms of performance is the lack of a throttle to give riders fully motor-assisted thrust (i.e. no using your pedals), which does come on some of the FX+ 2’s competitors like the Soltera and RadCity 5 Plus. However, I would be lying if I said I missed it. The bike is plenty quick and easy to ride without it.

Trek states that the FX+ 2’s 250Wh battery can provide riders with up to 35 minutes of range. This of course depends on a range of factors, from the pedal assist mode you typically use to how hilly your terrain is.

My commute to work was just over five and a half miles round trip and I would go through about a quarter of the battery. That puts my estimated range at closer to 22 miles. However, I almost always used the Turbo (highest) pedal assist and I do have a large hill each way. So had I been more conservative I could have probably got more range out of the FX+ 2. 

Luckily if you do need to charge the bike, it only takes around two hours for a full charge and the charger can be plugged into any wall outlet.

Unfortunately, the Trek FX+ 2 really struggles when compared to the competition, at least on paper. I have yet to ride the Aventon Soltera, but it is currently our best budget eBike and has a very similar feature set and design aesthetic compared to the FX+ 2. While the pedal-assist seems like it is not as smooth and responsive as the FX+ 2 and it lacks a 9-speed option, you can still get a 7-speed for $1,399. That’s $1,000 less than the FX+ 2 I reviewed, but you get more range, a throttle and an LCD display.

If you want something higher-end, the Rad Power RadCity5 Plus is our best budget bike and would still be my pick over the FX+ 2 based on the research I have done on the RadCity 5 Plus. The FX+ 2 is lighter, and significantly so (over 20 pounds!), but the RadCity 5 Plus has a feature set that really sets it apart. Yes, you only get a 7-speed rear cassette, but you also get a throttle, a removable battery and two LCD displays compared to the zero LCD displays on the FX+ 2.

Ultimately, if the Trek FX+ 2 eBike was cheaper it would be a lot easier to recommend. It was a lot of fun to ride, easy to carry with its 40-pound weight and has a very clean design. If price weren’t a factor, I would say the quick pedal assist make it a great choice, and the fact that it comes with fenders and a rack standard is a nice touch.

But none of that can make me get past the fact that this bike is hundreds — if not a thousand — dollars more than its competition without providing a lot of reasons why. Yes, it's lightweight, and it's a Trek so the build quality is excellent, but it lacks the LCD displays, removable battery or throttle that so many of the best electric bikes have. If the FX+ 2 had even some of those features, I’d rate it significantly higher, even with the price.

Trek 5900 – Team Issue Vs Stock Bike

We recently published a review of the Trek 5900 – their top-‘o-line carbon speedster, and the primary road bike supplied by Trek to the US Postal Service Team presented by Berry Floor. The bike I reviewed was the standard issue 5900 from Trek, and although “sweet as can be”, it’s slightly different from the bike that you’ll actually see Lance and the team riding. Here’s a quick look at some of the differences…

From time to time you’ll find a new part or component you haven’t seen before, simply because the bikes are also test-beds for new stuff that often finds its way into production and onto your dealers shelves as next year’s models, but for the most part, the Team Issue bikes are spec’d like this:

Frame & Forks – Trek – www.trekbikes.com Trek provides frames for all US Postal’s road racing activities. This includes road frames – the fully carbon and the “isn’t she lovely” 5900 that we reviewed here . I talked in with Trek Project Engineer Mark Andrews who knows the team bikes inside and out. The team is supplied with a two framesets, the 5500 and the 5900. Generally each rider gets a 5500 training bike and race bike. The 5900 frames are mostly reserved for the team’s climbers, who want an extra edge when the road turns uphill. The 5900 is the lightest of the 2 frames, due to it’s 110 Carbon construction, being lighter than the 120 OCLV used on the 5500’s.

The forks used by the team are the same forks used in production.  The 5500’s use an aluminum crown fork and the 5900’s use a carbon crown fork.   

Oh, and Mark mentioned the Team Issue bikes each are delivered with an aluminum number hangar already attached under the front of the top tube.

Trek also supplies the team’s Time Trial bikes, which were initially custom designed around Lance’s build, which has become the “medium” size, but the team also gets a few small and large models for the other guys. It’s the same TT frame and fork you can buy.

Components & Pedals – Shimano – www.shimano.com Another cool thing about road racing is that unlike other elite level sports, us everyday Joes can pretty much acquire the same stuff used by the pros. The Team Issue 5900 comes equipped with the same Shimano seatposts, shifters, derailleurs, cranks, pedals and bb’syou can buy. According to Shimano, the team runs Dura-Ace “Team Edition” components which have been available to the public for three years now. Nothing different there that any Lance fan can’t get, too. In fact, the only difference – and there is one – is that the Team Issue seatpost, levers, and cranks come branded with a “Shimano” logo instead of a “Dura-Ace” logo. That’s it.

Bars, Stem, bar tape – Deda Elementi -( www.dedaelementi.com ) Perhaps the first thing you’ll notice should you be lucky enough to swing a leg over an actual Team Issue bike, is the handlebars and stem. Although the stock 5900 comes equipped with Bontrager bars and stem, the Team bikes are sponsored by Italian manufacturer known for there beautifully crafted carbon “control systems”, seat posts, and other components.

Since 2000, the US Postal bikes have been equipped with bars, stems, and spacers including: – Deda Elementi Newton 26 road stem, length: 80-90-100-105-110-115-120-125-130-135-140 mm – 215 handlebar, shapes: anatomic, shallow or deep, width 42-43-44-46 – TT handlebar Aeroblack, width 42-44-46 – Aerobar Clip Black – Newton 31 road stem, lenght: 90-100-105-110-115-120-125-130-135-140 mm – Deda Bar Tape, various color, mainly dark blue and light blue – Carbon Spacers, 1′ and 1’1/8 diameter, thickness 3-5-10-15-20.

Wheels – Bontrager Wheelworks – www.bontrager.com Official Wheel sponsor to the team is Bontrager – who supply a variety of complete handbuilt wheel systems, including rims, hubs by Hugi and DT Swiss spokes, for various race conditions. The 5900 comes stock with Race X Lite clincher rims and tires, while the team prefers tubulars all around, but you can purchase the same wheel sets used by the team, which include: – Race X Lite – aluminum road wheel. – Race X Lite Carbon – road wheel – Race X Lite Aero – road wheel – Race X Lite TT – Time trial wheel

Saddles – Selle San Marco – www.sellesanmarco.com On bike comfort should never be taken lightly, but weight is definitely an issue. Italian saddle makers Selle San Marco supply the same seats to the team that you can buy. Although the stock 5900 comes with a Selle San Marco Aspide Team w titanium rails, this was not included in the Team spec I received from Selle San marco. Now, I can tell you that after several hundred km’s of riding, I still think this stock seat is one of the most comfy around. The only downside is the split at the back of the seat leaves your crack a sitting duck for rear-wheel road spray…!

Skidmarks aside, the folks at Selle San Marco confirmed they supply a variety of saddles to the team, depending on personal preference of each rider. USPS uses 5 different saddles: ERA, ERA COMPOSITE, CONCOR LIGHT (Lance’s fav), REGAL, STRADA.

Spokes – Sapim – www.sapim.be Although Bontrager ships complete wheel sets to the team, the spokes are later replaced with product from Belgian spoke-maker Sapim.

Tires – Hutchinson https://tires.hutchinson.fr Although Bontrager supplies the standard issue rubber on the 5900 you can buy, the Team rides rubber by French company Hutchinson. The company’s website lists a US Postal version of its Carbon Comp road tire, which comes in red, white and blue and looks pretty cool.

Computers – Ciclosport Information Systems – www.ciclosportusa.com The last difference we thought worthy of a mention is the cycling computers and info systems the team uses to log those miles, check speeds (who was fastest down that last mountain?) and help organize miles and miles of training data into usefully organized info. Revolutionizing rider safety: The protective jacket every e-biker should consider

If you’ve followed my writing or videos, you’ll know I’m a “life on two-wheels” kind of guy. If there’s an electric motorcycle, e-bike, scooter, or anything else remotely rideable out there, I’ve probably thrown a leg over it at least once . Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to learn how each type of vehicle comes with its own unique personality and enjoyment, but also its own risk profile. And without the benefit of 5,000 pounds of murderous steel around us, out of necessity we motorcycle riders become masters of balancing risk.

But could the perceived risk of different types of rides, such as e-motorcycles versus e-bikes, cloud our judgment on personal protection? I think it might, at least for me. And so I’ve been on a hunt for the right gear to fix that.

To put it a different way, when I’m on my motorcycles, I prescribe pretty heavily to the ATGATT doctrine of All The Gear, All The Time.

You’ll never find me on a motorcycle without a quality full-face helmet, and 99% of the time I wear motorcycle-specific armored jackets and gloves. I’m talking full back armor, shoulders, elbows, and sometimes chest armor or even built-in airbags depending on the jacket. I take safety fairly seriously on motorcycles, I ride conservatively, and I gear up.

That being said, I’ll sheepishly admit that out of convenience I often skip my armored riding jeans in favor of my vulnerable Levis. And to be fair, I do frequently forgo my armored riding boots while opting instead for my daily work boots. But I’m never in shorts or sandals, that’s for sure.

There’s just something about my motorcycles that instills that sense of important adherence to safety gear, to (mostly) sticking to ATGATT. Though here’s a little pro tip: I learned the hard way not to fly on motorcycle trips while wearing armored jeans when I ended up standing in an airport in my underwear with two TSA agents poking around the knees of my pants looking for drug bags. Damn body scanners instead of metal detectors. Anyway, I digress.

So yeah, motorcycles always equal “gear up” in my mind.

Then there are my scooters. I’m not talking cute little Razor scooters. I’m talking faster machines, like my 60 MPH Gogoro electric scooter. Or the even faster Gogoro Pulse I just tested in Taiwan.

They’re every bit as fast as my motorcycles when riding in the city or even on urban highways. Yet for some reason, they seem to give me some false sense of security. Stepping through my scooters causes me to allow myself a looser interpretation of my own safety gear rules. I’ll don a 3/4 helmet instead of a full-face sometimes. I’ll roll out in a T-shirt instead of leathers or an armored jacket. I’ll ride in khaki shorts instead of pants. And yes, I’ll even wear sandals sometimes in the hot Tel Aviv summers.

Just a couple days ago I was bombing down a mountain road on an electric scooter in Taiwan – the same road motorcyclists would love to carve up – with nothing but my signature black tee between me and the Taipei asphalt. And for some reason it didn’t strike me as strange, even though I’d surely be in an armored jacket if I was doing that run on a motorcycle.

I don’t condone this type of nearly-nude riding (especially not the sandals thing, even though they’re practically the equivalent of dress shoes here in the Middle East), but I’m also going to be honest with you about how I ride. As someone who doesn’t own a car and thus rides daily out of necessity, it’s a big part of my life and I want to be transparent about what that means.

And then there are my electric bicycles, where for some reason it all goes out the window. Sure, I’m at least almost always wearing a bike or skate helmet, but that’s pretty much where I’ve drawn the line for myself. If I’m wearing a t-shirt, that’s an upgrade over a tank top. Hell, sometimes my sandals are there just so the summer asphalt doesn’t burn my feet.

I’m not saying this is a good idea – in fact I know it’s a terrible idea. That’s why you may notice I never film my videos like this to avoid showcasing poor protection practices – I almost always film my electric bicycle videos in pants and boots. And yes, I know about degloving accidents (please don’t google that). But for some reason, even though I know academically that being hit by a car on a motorcycle would be just as bad as being hit by a car on a bike or scooter, I never really think of it that way when I go out to ride. I allow myself to be a lot more laissez-faire with my gear when on a scooter and especially when on an e-bike.

Lately though, I’ve been giving this concept a lot more thought. Why do I gear up on one type of two-wheeled vehicle but not another? I’m riding the same streets with the same obstacles and at the same speeds (at least while in the city). For a while now, I’ve been wondering why there isn’t a better solution. Sure, it seems a bit silly to mount my e-bikes wearing all the same massive gear from the motorcycle end of my small section of the closet that my wife permits me to use. But why isn’t there gear that can protect me like my motorcycle gear without making me look like I’m a Valentino Rossi wannabe?

As it turns out, there already is. It’s called Beyond Riders.

Fortunately, I’ve finally discovered the answer I’ve been looking for. I found the gear that offers the moto-level protection I want on my electric bicycles without the same over the top moto-look.

Beyond Riders specializes in full-protection riding gear that looks like casual wear. They’ve got riding shirts that look like plaid hipster lumberjack shirts. They’ve got canvas jackets that look like a classic Carhart work shirt. They’ve got mesh jackets for full protection from a slide while still getting a breeze down to your cotton undershirt in hot weather. They’ve even got pullover hoodies for a soft, warm winter feel-good shirt!

And all of these have special pockets for holding motorcycle armor to protect different combinations of your elbows, shoulders, spine, chest, and more. Imagine that, a comfy winter hoodie that also protects you in a crash.

Many of the models have other important features too, like reflective panels that illuminate at night, belt loops to keep the jacket down in a slide, hidden pockets for gear, vent panels to avoid overheating, gussets to help the shirts expand at the shoulders when you reach forward for the bars, and more.

The canvas jacket I’ve been wearing lately even has a built-in microfiber cloth in the lower inside flap for a quick way to clean your riding glasses.

The aramid fiber material is protective against sliding across the asphalt, (not to mention the hidden Level 2 armor pads I have in there for impact protection), but the jacket is also light enough that I can throw it over my shoulder or into the crook of my arm and walk into a coffee shop. My wife even likes the way it looks on date nights – a test none of my other motorcycle gear has ever passed.

Basically, the jacket gives me that convenient and comfortable protection I’ve been looking for so that I can convince myself to actually wear it while riding my e-bikes. That’s the key piece here, because it only protects me on my e-bikes and e-scooters if I’m actually wearing it.

And it’s not just jackets either, but Beyond Riders also has riding pants that look like normal pants, fingerless skate gloves, protective hoodies, and more.

Then there are the color and pattern options, which seem endless, and the size range includes XXS to literally 8XL and everything in between.

After I dug a little deeper, I discovered how they can offer what seems like a thousand combinations and permutations of sizes and styles. Beyond Riders produces its clothing to order, which means it takes a few extra days (sometimes up to a week), but each shirt or other garment is produced after you order it on the website, made to the exact specifications you selected.

That surely helps them be more efficient by cutting down on stocking massive inventory, yet they can still produce just about any color or size combination quickly.

The more I researched, the more I learned. It makes sense that there’s a big motorcycle community around these jackets, but it turns out they’re popular in other riding sports like electric unicycle groups and for high-speed electric skateboard riders. So it makes perfect sense to turn it into my e-bike jacket.

Of course this stuff doesn’t come cheap, and compared to a distressed denim jacket from Target, the prices are significant. But if you’ve ever looked at the main motorcycle gear brands like Rev’it and Alpinestars, you’ll see the prices are actually pretty decent compared to leading motorcycle protective garments.

My favorite of the two Beyond Riders jackets I got is the canvas riding jacket, which was $179 with included Level 1 pads , but I chose to add the $59 Level 2 pad upgrade for better production. The canvas jacket is certainly not a winter coat, but it keeps me warm enough in the moderate Florida and Tel Aviv winter I’ve been testing it in.

But now that temperatures are rising, I’m getting more use out of my Beyond Riders reflective mesh shirt that costs $229 . It’s black (see above photo), but the reflective layer means that it’s still visible at night. And for price comparison, my Rev’it Eclipse 2 motorcycle jacket I’ve been wearing up until now was just shy of $200, so these prices are fairly par for the course when it comes to protective gear.

I definitely prefer the look of the canvas shirt better, but the mesh shirt is great for getting the same protection in hot weather.

While this stuff ain’t cheap by any stretch of the imagination, frankly neither is surgery. And growing back a significant portion of skin on your back, sides, or arms is something that most people would gladly have paid a few hundred bucks to have avoided once they are in the thick of it. I’ve still got some scarring from going wheels up on an electric skateboard back in 2018 – my most serious crash of my career that fortunately only left me donating more skin than I would have preferred to the asphalt. But you never forget that feeling, and so having those aramid fibers of the jacket around me (not to mention the armor) adds some significant peace of mind that my black cotton t-shirt just doesn’t provide. 

And the beauty is that while I’m comfortable wearing this gear on my electric bicycles, it’s found its way onto my motorcycle rides too since it’s built with that level of protection in mind.

I think one of the biggest safety improvements for cyclists has been the flashing red and white LED lights mounted front and rear. They announce the bike's presence well in advance for motorists paying the least amount of attention. Wish something like them had been available when I was commuting to/from work back in the '70s. About all that was available then was a bright orange rain suit that was equivalent to a boil-n-bag.

My tried and true Rev’it motorcycle jacket has spent a lot more time on its hanger now that I’ve got the Beyond Riders gear in my quiver.

After years of dismissing protective clothing on my non-moto rides, I’ve finally found a way to take my appreciation for safety gear on my motorcycles and apply it to my electric bikes, scooters, and other rides in a way that is convenient enough that I actually do it.

To me, that’s the real kicker. You can have the best gear in the world, but if you don’t wear it because it’s too bulky, hot, or otherwise feels like overkill on your bike, then it’s only going to protect your coat hook.

The gear that you’ll actually wear because it’s comfortable and looks good (even on a bicycle!), that’s what will truly protect you.

I have bike shops closer to me, but it's worth the 40-minute drive for the service I receive. Repairs are done properly, the employees are honest and the prices are affordable. Our service packages save you money After all the miles you’ve been putting in, your bike deserves some love. Regular service is key to keeping your bike in tip-top shape and avoiding costly issues in the future. When you buy one of our service packages, our mechanics will provide the same services that keep our Tour de France riders flying up and down the Pyrenees: wash, lube, adjust, align, inspect and more. Level One: The scrub down

Service made simple When it’s time to bring your bike in, here’s what we’ll do.

When we ask, “How can we help you today?” we mean it. We want to know any concerns you’re having; how far, how often and where you like to ride; and if you have any big goals or races coming up. That way we can provide exactly what you need to get the most out of your bike.

One of our service technicians will put your bike in the stand and run it through our professional inspection process. They’ll describe what they’re doing, what they’re noticing, and address all of your concerns.

From there, we’ll discuss what we can do to get your bike back up to speed, like making on-the-spot adjustments, ordering replacement parts or suggesting a service package. We’ll also create an itemised receipt to make sure you’re comfortable with repair costs before we get to work.

Leave your bike with us and we’ll do the rest! You’ll receive an email and/or text message when your repairs have been completed, and we’ll be sure to call you if anything pops up along the way.

Don’t forget to scrub behind your (g)ears We’re always here to help, but there’s a lot you can do for your bike at home – with little more than a toothbrush. Watch these videos to learn how to wash your bike, maintain your drivetrain, pump your tyres and perform pre-ride checks. Showing your bike some W.L.C. (wash, lube and check) every 25 hours of riding or so will help keep your ride rolling like new.
