trip on harry potter train

I can never resist a scenic train ride, and the Jacobite steam train through the Scottish Highlands is one of the best. This 84-mile round trip travels along the West Highland Line from Fort William to Mallaig. And it’s a journey packed with old-fashioned charm, from the vintage carriages to the sound of the whistle and smell of the steam engine.

It’s a relaxed way to travel as you soak up views of lochs, mountains and waterfalls and chug across the spectacular Glenfinnan Viaduct – one of the most iconic locations from the Harry Potter films, where the Jacobite starred as the Hogwarts Express . So if you’re planning a trip on board the Jacobite steam train, here’s everything you need to know.

The locomotive of the Jacobite steam train

What is the Jacobite steam train?

The Jacobite is a steam train which operates on the scenic route between Fort William and Mallaig in the Scottish Highlands . It gets its name from the Jacobites, a group who fought to get the Stuarts back on the British throne in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Jacobite steam train runs along a stretch of the West Highland Line, which was voted one of the great railway journeys of the world – and they’re not wrong. The full line runs for 164 miles from Glasgow to Mallaig, past Loch Lomond and the desolate Rannoch Moor on its way to Fort William. But it gets even more scenic from there.

The stretch of line from Fort William to Mallaig opened in 1901 and steam trains ran on the route until 1967 when they were replaced by diesel trains. But they were brought back in the 1980s, and have been run under various different names since then – the most recent being the Jacobite… or some of you might know it better as the Hogwarts Express .

trip on harry potter train

The Jacobite starred in the Harry Potter films, transporting Harry and his fellow students from Platform 9¾ at London’s King’s Cross to Hogsmeade Station. You get a particularly good view of the train in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when Harry and Ron fly over it in a stolen Ford Anglia as it travels over the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

The Jacobite provided the steam engine and the carriages used in the film, and the same carriages are still in use on trips today. Though the locomotive which pulled the Hogwarts Express is now on display in the Warner Bros Studios in London.

There’s a gift shop selling Harry Potter merchandise on board the train and we spotted a few people in Hogwarts scarves. But you don’t need to be a Harry Potter fan to enjoy the Jacobite. There’s a mix of train enthusiasts, Potter addicts and people just wanting to admire the scenery, with a mix of ages and nationalities from all over the world.

Where does the Jacobite steam train leave from and go to?

The Jacobite starts from Fort William and runs to Mallaig, a journey of 42 miles. It stops off in Glenfinnan along the way, and will also stop at Arisaig if you ask the guard.

If you’re travelling by car, Fort William is 108 miles (2 hours 40 minutes’ drive) from Glasgow , 148 miles (3 hours 20 minutes) from Edinburgh or 66 miles (1 hour 50 minutes) from Inverness . You can park your car at the An Aird Car and Coach Park, which is just behind the Morrison’s supermarket next to the train station.

You can also get to Fort William by train – it’s around 3.5 hours from Glasgow, on a slow but scenic route travelling along the rest of the West Highland Line. If you’re coming from Edinburgh you’ll need to get to Glasgow first and change trains there.

The Jacobite waiting to depart from Fort William station, Scotland

Fort William is also on the route of the Caledonian Sleeper , which runs overnight from London to Scotland. It’s a great way to travel to Scotland, with a mix of seats and cabins with shared bathrooms or en-suites – and even some cabins with double beds. There’s a dining car on board and you wake up in time for breakfast with a Highland view.

The Highland Sleeper departs from London Euston at 9.15pm (8.59pm on Sundays) and is scheduled to get to Fort William at 9.57am. But it’s quite often delayed, so it’s safest to book an afternoon trip on the Jacobite in case you’re running late.

The Caledonian Sleeper train in Fort William

How often does the Jacobite run?

The Jacobite doesn’t run year-round, but has one or two services a day from spring until autumn. The morning service runs between 28 March and 25 October 2024, and there’s also an additional afternoon service from 6 May until 27 September.

How long is the Jacobite steam train ride?

The round trip on the Jacobite steam train takes around six hours in total. The outward journey from Fort William to Mallaig takes 2 hours 10 minutes, with a short stop at Glenfinnan included. Then you have 1 hour 45 minutes to look around Mallaig before heading back to Fort Wiliam, which is slightly quicker at just under 2 hours.

Views of the Scottish Highlands from the train

The morning Jacobite trip leaves Fort William at 10.15 and arrives into Mallaig at 12.26. Then it returns at 14.10, getting back into Fort William at 16.03.

The afternoon service leaves Fort William at 12.50 and arrives into Mallaig at 15.06. Then it returns at 17.00, getting back into Fort William at 18.52.

You’re advised to get to the station in Fort William at least 20 minutes before the departure time so you can find your seats. But it’s also a good chance to get some photos of the train on the platform, with the steam billowing out as they fire up the engine.

What are the classes of travel on the Jacobite steam train?

The Jacobite steam train uses vintage British Railways Mark I and Mark II train carriages which were in service between the 1950s and the 1970s, and there’s a choice of First Class and Standard Class seats. Standard Class has basic seats with two tables of four on each side of the aisle. It’s the no-frills option but is still pretty comfortable.

If you want a bit more luxury, First Class carriages are more spacious, with tables for four on one side of the aisle and tables of two on the other side – so for an extra cost you don’t have to share a table. You get bigger, upholstered, armchair-style seats with more leg room, fancier wood panelling, tartan table lamps and matching curtains.

Standard Class carriage on the Jacobite steam train

On the morning trip there’s also a special First Class carriage with compartments connected by a long corridor if you want the proper Harry Potter experience. Each compartment seats six and you need to book the whole thing, so there are only a few available.

There are toilets at the end of the carriages. And if you’re travelling with a dog you can bring it along with you, with one ‘medium-sized family dog’ (not sure how exactly they define that!) allowed in Standard Class only, which must stay on a lead.

Can you get food on the train?

There’s a buffet car on the train where you can buy hot and cold drinks as well as basic snacks like crisps and chocolate. First Class passengers (unless you’re in the compartments) get a cup of tea or coffee included on each leg of the journey and can also pre-order an afternoon tea box filled with sandwiches, scones and cakes.

Otherwise you can bring your own snacks or picnic, but the journey’s not all that long so we just waited until we got to Mallaig which has a selection of pubs and cafés (see below for suggestions) where you can get lunch or tea and cake. And if the sun’s shining there’s just enough time to grab an ice cream from the kiosk at Glenfinnan station.

The Dining Car Café on the platform at Glenfinnan

How do you get the best seat?

You can’t choose your seat so it’s pot luck as to where you’ll end up, but you are allocated seats together if there are two or more of you. You usually have to share a table, but you can pay extra in First Class to have a private table for two.

Seats are marked B and F – backwards and forwards – but they don’t necessarily correspond to the direction the train actually goes in. The locomotive moves to the other end of the train when you get to Mallaig rather than the train turning around. So you get to go in both directions, and change seats for the return so you get views from both sides.

The windows can be a bit grubby for taking photos, especially after it’s rained – we gave the outside of our window a wipe down with a tissue before we set off. There is small section at the top which opens so you can take photos through it, though they do let a bit of soot and steam in if you’re near the engine, especially going through tunnels.

The windows in the vestibules at the end of each carriage open wider – just don’t stick your head or your camera out of the window as there are tunnels and trees close to the line!

The Jacobite steaming across the Glenfinnan Viaduct is the journey’s most famous photo opportunity. The conductor announces when you’re approaching the viaduct on both the outward and return journey – it’s around 35 minutes from Fort William if you want to get into position early and bag one of the coveted spots by the window.

The Jacobite train at Glenfinnan station

For the best view of the Glenfinnan Viaduct you need to be on the left-hand side of the train on the outbound journey or the right-hand side on the way back (though the locomotive is on backwards for the return journey so it doesn’t look quite as good), and ideally in a carriage near to the back of train so you can see it curving around.

The train slows down as you go over the viaduct so you get time to take photos – and wave to all the people gathered on the hillside around the viaduct to take photos of the train passing (see below for details if you want to join them).

Steam train crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct

What can you see along the way?

For a fairly short journey, this stretch of the West Highland Line packs in a lot of scenic views. Just after leaving Fort William you pass the ruins of Old Inverlochy Castle and cross over the Caledonian Canal past Neptune’s Staircase – a series of eight interconnected locks which was built by Scottish engineer Thomas Telford in the 19th century.

The route then runs along the shores of Loch Eil, with views back to Fort William and Ben Nevis. Then you cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which has 21 arches and stretches for 380 metres above the River Finnan. Look out for the Glenfinnan Monument on the edge of Loch Sheil, which is dedicated to those who died fighting for the Jacobite cause.

Loch Eil on the West Highland Line scenic railway route

After a stop off at Glenfinnan, where you can make a quick visit to the café or West Highland Railway Museum, it’s on past Loch Eilt. One of the small islands dotting the loch is another Harry Potter location – Eilean Na Moine where Dumbledore is buried.

The train passes the Church of Our Lady of the Braes, which was used for another film Local Hero (1983), before travelling on through Arisaig, the most westerly railway station in Britain. Then the last stretch towards Mallaig has views out over to the Small Isles of Rum, Eigg and Muck, as well as the south of the Isle of Skye .

Steam train going around a corner

What is there to do in Mallaig?

At the end of the line is the small port town of Mallaig. You have 1 hour 45 minutes there (or a bonus extra 10 minutes on afternoon trips), though there’s not a huge amount to see.

You can go wildlife spotting on a boat trip with Western Isles Cruises. Their tours only last an hour and are timed to fit in with the train timetable. They sail out to Green Island on the Knoydart Peninsula, looking out for seals, porpoises, dolphins and whales.

Or you can just take a walk around the harbour, watching the fishermen mending their nets and the ferries coming and going. Keep your eye out for the resident seals – we spotted one basking on the rocks just outside the harbour. There’s also a 1.75-mile circular walk which takes you around the harbour and up into the hills behind the town.

Mallaig has a few shops to browse, including the Haggard Alley shop which sells Harry Potter merchandise. And if you’re hungry there’s good seafood at the Chlachain Inn or Steam Inn, fish and chips from Jaffy’s Shop or pizzas and pastries from The Bakehouse.

Boats in Mallaig harbour in the Scottish Highlands

How much does the Jacobite steam train cost?

An adult return ticket costs £65 in Standard Class and £98 in First Class in 2024 (or it’s £36/£64 for children under 16 – under threes don’t need a ticket). You can also book a private table for two for £210 or a compartment for up to six people for £398.

There are no discounts for Railcards or InterRail/Eurail passes. And you can’t buy single tickets or return on a different day, so if you wanted to travel one way (if you were planning to take the ferry to Skye from Mallaig), you still have to pay for a return trip.

There’s also a minimum booking of two passengers in First Class, so if you’re a solo traveller you can only travel in Standard Class.

Private table for two in First Class on the Jacobite steam train

If you don’t fancy splashing out on the Jacobite, you can also take a regular train along the Fort William to Mallaig stretch of the West Highland Line instead. The standard ScotRail sprinter trains aren’t quite as atmospheric as the Jacobite and you don’t get so long to soak up the views, but you do still get to see the same scenery.

The regular trains run three–four times a day, take around 90 minutes and cost from £8.20 one way (and you can use Railcards and passes). They also run year-round, so are a good option if you’re visiting in winter when the Jacobite isn’t running.

Beaches along the route of the West Highland Line

How do I book the Jacobite steam train?

You can buy tickets for the Jacobite online at their website or by phone on 0333 996 6720. You’ll be sent a booking confirmation after you’ve booked and then get your tickets and seat numbers sent to you by email a few days before you travel.

If you want to travel in First Class then book as early as you can as these tickets sell out quickly (we booked three months in advance for August and could only get standard tickets) – especially in the compartments as there are only a few of them.

The Jacobite travelling along Loch Eil in Scotland

Can you buy tickets for the Jacobite on the day? You can sometimes pick up last-minute tickets on the day if there’s availability. They’re sold by the guard on the platform at Fort William and you can only pay cash. Get there early if you want to pick one up, but the Jacobite is popular so I wouldn’t chance it if it’s something you really want to do.

Another option is to book a tour which includes the trip on the Jacobite. You can take day trips from Inverness *, Edinburgh * and Glasgow .* Or there’s a three-day tour * which also includes visits to Loch Ness, the Isle of Skye and Glencoe.

The Jacobite steam train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct

Where can you see the Jacobite crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct?

The one thing you do miss onboard the Jacobite is the best view of it going over the Glenfinnan Viaduct. But you can easily do both in one day if you’re travelling between May and September when there are two train services each day.

If you’re travelling by car, you can park at the Glenfinnan Viaduct and Monument Car Park (PH37 4LT). Or you can take a regular ScotRail train or the no 500 bus from Fort William to Glenfinnan. The train crosses the viaduct around 11.00 and 15.15 for the morning service and 13.25 and 18.00 (15.15 and 19.45 on Saturdays) for the afternoon service.

But get there early if you want to bag a prime position as it gets very busy. The main viewpoint is on the hill above the viaduct – you follow the road under the viaduct and then make your way up the hill to the left so you can see the viaduct as it curves around. But you can also get a different view of the train from below the viaduct.

Glenfinnan viaduct hogwarts express

Easily one of the most beautiful railway bridges in the world, let alone the UK, the Glenfinnan Viaduct has skyrocketed to the top of many travel bucket lists since appearing in the Harry Potter films. The setting is even more spectacular when the Jacobite Steam Train ( a.k.a. the Harry Potter train or the Hogwarts Express ) passes over the viaduct. Between April and October, it does so 4 times daily (twice in each direction) – so most try to time their visit with a train passing. The increase in popularity has some obvious drawbacks such as having to share the experience with many others and having to arrive early enough to secure a parking spot. Below we present our Glenfinnan Viaduct and Jacobite Steam Train Travel Guide to help you plan your visit to this iconic attraction in the Scottish Highlands , a s it makes a great stop on your way to or from the Isle of Skye , or is a great day trip option from either Glen Coe (and Fort William) or Oban .

The Glenfinnan Viaduct is located near the small village of Glenfinnan in the western Scottish Highlands, along the A830 road that connects Fort William and Mallaig (also known as the Road to the Isles), from which ferries depart to the Isle of Skye (clicking the map below will open Google Maps).

trip on harry potter train

Glennfinnan is roughly a 25-minute drive from Fort William, a 1h30 min drive from Oban , a 2-hour drive from Inverness, and a 3-hour from either Glasgow or Edinburgh .

For advice and tips on how to drive in Scotland, check out our  Scotland Roadtrip Driving Guide . If you haven’t booked your rental vehicle yet, we highly recommend using  Discover Cars  to get the best rates on your rental in Scotland.

The area is far easier to visit if you have your own vehicle If you are based in Fort William, Glenfinnan can also be reached easily by public bus , otherwise, your best option is probably to join an organized tour from either Edinburgh or Inverness .

The Glenfinnan Viaduct is a railway viaduct on the West Highland Line overlooking the Glenfinnan Monument ( erected in 1814 and dedicated to the Highlanders who fought in support of the Jacobite rising of 1745 ) and the waters of Loch Shiel. The viaduct was built between 1897 and 1901 and was designed by Robert McAlpine, nicknamed “Concrete Bob” for his innovative use of mass concrete. It has 21 semicircular spans of 50 feet (15 m), is the longest concrete railway bridge in Scotland at 416 yards (380 m), and crosses the River Finnan at a height of 100 feet (30 m).

The line is used by passenger trains operated by ScotRail between Glasgow and Mallaig, and in the summer, West Coast Railways operates The Jacobite steam train (“the Hogwarts Express”) along the line.

Before appearing in the Harry Potter movies, the viaduct attracted less than 50,000 visitors per year (40,000 in 2005). Since then, the number of visitors has exploded and in 2023 it surpassed 500,000 in that year alone. This number is an issue, as the visitor center was designed to accommodate only up to 100,000 visitors a year, which has resulted in increased pressure upon the small Glenfinnan rural community (population of 150), as well as its facilities and parking infrastructure.

Glenfinnan Visiting Tips & Jacobite Train Schedule

The first and most important tip if want to time your arrival with the passing of the Jacobite Steam Train (aka the Hogwarts Express ): arrive early . If you are travelling during the summer peak season, we highly recommend arriving at least 45-60 min before the train is scheduled to pass over the viaduct (and that might not even guarantee you a spot in the parking lot). We had to reschedule our visit to Glenfinnan as our first attempt failed: we arrived at the car park about 30 minutes before the scheduled train passing (mid-September, 2023), and the car park had just filled up, even though they had recently built a new and enlarged car park in 2021. So we had to turn around (like many other vehicles) and come back another time. There is a small amount of overflow parking available by the nearby St Finnans Church and some more at a few laybys on the road, but these are not guaranteed as they sometimes fill up before the car park does. Please take care to only park in designated spots and do not obstruct roads and entrances as this is an important and busy road for local traffic.

The main Car Park is located just off the main road, about a 10-minute walk to the main viaduct viewpoint.

If you want to be sure to get a parking space by arriving really but aren’t sure how to pass the time before the train’s passing, we suggest the following activities:

  • Head to the Glenfinnan monument and walk along the shores of the beautiful Loch Shiel .
  • Walk up to the Glennfinnan viewpoint , a short 5-minute uphill walk from the Glenfinnan Visitor Center. From Here you’ll enjoy beautiful views of both Loch Shiel and the Glenfinnan Viaduct.
  • Hike the short Glenfinnan viaduct loop trail – in reverse. The trail is described in greater detail below, but you do it in a clockwise direction (instead of the suggested counter-clockwise direction) since the viaduct viewpoint is nearer to the end of the trail in that direction.
  • Visit Saint Mary & Saint Finnan Churc h – is a beautiful building and one of the most historic sites in the Glenfinnan area and, because it sits so high up relative to Loch Sheiel, you can enjoy beautiful views of the loch and the surrounding mountains from there.

Glenfinnan church

The Jacobite Steam Train passes over the Glennviaduct 4 times per day from early May until late September. In April and October, the train only passes twice per day. Here’s the 2024 full schedule (though be sure to consult the official website for potential scheduling changes). The westbound train will typically pass over the viaduct 30-35 minutes after departing from Fort William, and the eastbound train will typically pass over the viaduct 60-65 minutes after departing from Mallaig.

trip on harry potter train

The view of the train passing over the viaduct is most scenic and popular from the western side and therefore you want to time your arrival with the train departing Fort William. It will usually pass over the viaduct 30-35 minutes after departing Fort Williams. The ideal viewpoint is roughly around this area , but as you will realize when you get there, there are several good spots from which to choose if you arrive early enough, otherwise, you might just end up with whatever spot is left. It takes most people about 10 min to walk to the viewpoint area along a trail that will take you under and then around the viaduct to a slightly higher elevation.

Glenfinnan viaduct

If getting the perfect train shot is important to you, you’ll want to scope out the hillside in advance of the train passing over. And be ready for when it does pass, as even though the train slows down as it passes over the viaduct, the moment is very short-lived!

Glenfinnan viaduct harry potter train

If you are interested in either seeing the train from a different perspective or would prefer to be in a less crowded area, you can also consider viewing the viaduct from the eastern viewpoint , for which it’s best to time your arrival with trains departing from Mallaig, which typically pass over the viaduct 60-65 minutes after departing Mallaig.

Best time to visit : we highly recommend shoulder season (May, June, September and early October). The weather will be pleasant, it won’t be as crowded as during the peak summer months, and you will be outside the peak midge period (those pesky highland “mosquitoes”). Be sure to check the  midge forecast  beforehand. They could make your life miserable while waiting for the train to pass if you didn’t bring repellant.

If hiking is not your thing, you can easily follow the main route from the parking lot to the western viewpoint and return the same way. You can follow the GPS map with All Trails, and the quick in-and-out route is only 2.3 km long.

If however you want to hike a little or want to enjoy a little more of the beautiful surrounding scenery, there is a loop trail option that is about 4km in length total.

Distance : 3.9 km Route Type : Loop Elevation gain : 72m (cumulative elevation gain: 89m) AllTrails rating : (4.5, 579 ratings (2023)) Duration : 1h (excluding time waiting for train)

The loop option provides you with two additional benefits (aside from the longer and scenic trail):

  • You can enjoy beautiful views of Loch Shiel from several viewpoints along the trail.
  • If Walking the trail at a decent pace after the train passes by the viewpoint, you can catch up to the steam train while it is briefly stopped at the Glenfinnan train station.

Not an AllTrails member yet? We highly recommend signing up for either their free or paid membership plans . The free plan allows you to find new trails and plan routes but can only be used while hiking if you have access to mobile data. The paid membership plan ( AllTrails+ ) allows you to download trail maps for offline use and provides live progress updates and off-route notifications. If you are still uncertain – you should know that the All Trails mobile application was voted the 2023 iPhone App of the Year by Apple.

If you want to experience the Jacobite Steam Train (aka the Hogwarts Express) in a more up-close and personal manner, know that you can also ride the train across the Glenfinnan Viaduct! If that’s something that is of interest to you, you’ll have to buy the tickets well in advance as they tend to sell out months ahead of time.

Know that riding the train is almost a full-day affair (assuming you want to return to your starting point, most probably Fort William). The train ride each way between Fort William and Mallaig takes just over two hours, and there is roughly a 1h45 gap between your arrival in Mallaig and the departure time for the return leg back to Fort William. Alternatively, you could also spend the night in Mallaig and return to Fort Williams the following day.

Nearby Attractions and Activities

Beautifully nestled in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, Glen Coe is a true paradise for hikers, hill walkers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Some of our favorite hiking trails include the Lost Valley , the Old Military Road and the Devil’s Staircase . For more information on visiting these beautiful hiking trails in this stunning highland area of Scotland, check out our Guide on the Best Hiking Trails in Glen Coe .

Hiking Packing List

All Trails subscription – This comes in really handy for areas with little or no cell reception, as the annual subscription allows you to download trail maps for offline use. External Battery – If you are using your phone to track your progress along the trail or to help with navigation, you certainly don’t want your phone to die on you. That’s especially true in the unlikely event that you might get hurt or need assistance. Hiking poles – These can be particularly useful in steep trails or muddy/boggy trail conditions.

If you are not an avid hiker, Glen Coe can still be very much enjoyed from the comfort of your own vehicle, with a few photo stops along the way. For more information on the best viewpoints and photo stops, check out our Guide on the Top Things to See and Do in Glen Coe .

Visiting Skye was the main attraction for us when we decided to travel to Scotland. Although we loved our time spent elsewhere in the country, there was something magical about being in Skye, an island filled with dramatic and otherworldly landscapes. From epic hikes like the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing , to the beautiful waterfalls of the Fairy Pools and Talisker Bay , there’s something for everybody on sky. It’s also just a great place to just drive around (not unlike Glen Coe) and enjoy the scenery. It’s also home to one of our favourite whisky distillery’s, Talisker – it’s a great place to visit for a tasting and tour of the facility.

This is a beautiful and pleasant walk along Lock Linnhe , where you’ll encounter the impressive Coprach Shipwreck. After turning inland, following the Caledonian Canal, you’ll eventually reach a flight of eight locks known as Neptune’s Staircase.

Oban is a beautiful and charming coastal town, and sadly many do not give it the time it deserves using it primarily as a launching pad for visiting some of the nearby famous Hebrides islands, such as Mull, Iona, Jura and Islay. The town itself is definitely deserving a full day (if not more): it has a beautiful boardwalk promenade, some of the best seafood restaurants in the country, the curious McGraig’s tower overlooking the town, and is home to the historic Oban whisky distillery (established in 1794). Another favourite activity of ours was a visit to the beautiful green ilse of Kerrera . Oh, and the drive between Oban and Glen Coe is superbly scenic.

Just a short hop from Fort William lies the imposing Ben Nevis mountain , which towers over the surrounding landscape. Despite its title as the UK’s tallest mountain, it is still a very accessible mountain to hike for most people. If you would to experience Ben Nevis from up close without having to climb a mountain, there is a cable car that departs along the northern slope of the adjacent Aonach Mor mountain.

In our opinion it’s not a destination worthy of a prolonged stay. Don’t get us wrong, the area is very beautiful, but once you’ve seen the train and spent a bit of time by the loch, there isn’t terribly much else to do in the immediate area. Glenfinnan is best visited either on the way to/from Skye or as a day trip from Fort William.

Also, since the train never passes very early in the morning, there’s no need to spend the night to avoid having to get up ridiculously early.

Where is the Harry Potter train in Scotland?

The Jacobite train (or Hogwarts Express train journey) goes from Fort William to Mallaig and is a return trip by steam locomotive. At 84 miles in total, the round trip takes you via Glenfinnan and Arisaig. Here’s a little more about each of those destinations.

Fort William is located south of the Great Glen and is famous for being at the foot of the UK’s tallest mountain, Ben Nevis. It’s an incredibly photogenic spot and a popular place to use as a base while touring the Highlands.

Crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct in Scotland is one of the most spectacular parts of any journey aboard the Harry Potter train from Fort William. From the 21 arch viaduct, the Jacobite monument and Loch Shiel can be seen.

When time permits, the train driver will stop while traversing the viaduct so passengers can fully appreciate and photograph the panoramic views. While at Glenfinnan station, there is time to explore the on-site West Highland Railway Museum if you wish.

View of the Glenfinnan Viaduct from the Jacobite train.

The steam train from Fort William to Mallaig can also stop at Arisaig upon request. This small place plays host to the Highland Games every July, and is positioned on the shores of the Loch of the Cells. During the summer season, visitors can also take the Shearwater boat from here to the Small Isles.

Mallaig is the station at the end of the line, and those who ride the Harry Potter steam train in Scotland have over an hour and a half to spend at leisure here. A lunch of fish and chips is the traditional choice in this bustling ferry and fishing port. Services also run from Mallaig to Skye and the Small Isles.

En route to Mallaig, you may also spot Rum, Luck, Eigg and Canna – the Small Isles –  and the Isle of Skye . The train also passes Loch Morar and the river of the same name, plus the beaches that were used when filming Highlander .

Views of the Scottish coast from the Jacobite train.

The steam train trip aboard The Jacobite is also known as the Hogwarts Express, and it’s possible to take an 84 mile round trip on this while visiting Scotland. It departs from Fort William, the largest town in the Scottish Highlands .

The Glenfinnan Viaduct.

The Jacobite steam train from Fort William to Mallaig is only sold as a return ticket. At the current time the cost per adult is £65 in Standard and £95 in First Class.

You can also book a private table seating two for £210. Booking fees may also apply.

We took the photo below on our last trip on the Jacobite – this is the First Class compartment.

First class carriage on the Jacobite in Scotland.

The full Fort William to Mallaig steam train trip takes around two hours each way, with a stop of around 90 minutes for lunch in Mallaig.

Is it worth taking this Harry Potter train ride in Scotland? Oh yes. One of the world’s most scenic train journeys takes you from stunning Fort William to the Glenfinnan Viaduct before heading on to Mallaig at the end of the West Highland Line.

Along the way, you’ll pass by Loch Eil’s shoreline as well as see Scotland’s deepest lake, Loch Morar. You can also explore the West Highland Railway Museum at Glenfinnan station if you like before heading to Mallaig, where a lunch break is taken before the return trip.

Tracy and Doug Collins on the Jacobite train in Scotland.

As it’s a restored steam train, the coaches of The Jacobite are not designed to allow wheelchair access. A ramp may be provided, but often wheelchairs are too wide to fit through the door.

It’s best, therefore, if mobility-impaired passengers can step up aided or unaided and walk at least a short distance.

There is absolutely nothing to stop you from taking your own food on the ‘Hogwarts Express’. Do bear in mind that a lunch stop of around 90 minutes is taken in Mallaig, however.

Insider tip – If you do want to take a light snack, try to pick up a bag of ‘Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans’ made by Jelly Belly so you can relive Harry and Ron’s journey to Hogwarts. They are widely available to buy online .

Train and Travel Tips: Get the Most Out of Your Trip

Hogwarts express at warner brothers: the making of harry potter, london.

The Hogwarts Express train makes its first appearance in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and appears in all the films. The train forms a central part of the story, as it’s the transport to Hogwarts, where Harry meets many characters, including Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.

To experience the enchanting Hogwarts Express experience, you must travel on the Harry Potter train in Scotland. Not only will you follow in the footsteps – or rather train tracks – of Harry and his friends on their journey to Hogwarts, but you’ll also see some of the movie’s locations.

You can eat chocolate frogs and sit in Harry Potter-style compartments on the train itself. And for all passengers – Harry Potter fans or not – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revel in a classic British steam train trip from yesteryear.

Harry Potter Hogwarts Express Bridge and Flying Ford Anglia

Ride the Harry Potter train in Scotland and cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct’ Bridge to Hogwarts’ featured in the flying Ford Anglia scene from Chamber of Secrets

Memorable scenes featuring the Hogwarts Express

One of the most famous scenes from the series – in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – features Harry and Ron Weasley in the flying Ford Anglia crossing the bridge to Hogwarts. Realising the Hogwarts Express is right behind them, Ron swerves off the bridge, and Harry tumbles out of the car. Then Ron skilfully navigates the flying Ford Anglia between the bridge’s arches before saving Harry.

The bridge from that scene is one of Scotland’s most famous landmarks, the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which you will go over along the way. As well as the bridge to Hogwarts, you’ll also see the loch used to film Hogwarts Great Lake and the island containing Dumbledore’s Grave.

We think the best Hogwarts Express experience is riding the train in Scotland, but we would say that at the Train Hacker. However, you can see the steam locomotive and carriages used for filming outside London at Warner Bros: Making of Harry Potter .

For the experience of a lifetime, Potter fans, here’s how to relive your Hogwarts Express fantasy and ride Harry Potter’s train.

Jacobite steam train crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct Scotland

The Jacobite steam train crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct is one of the highlights of the journey from Fort William to Mallaig

How to Ride Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express Train in Scotland and What to Expect

In the Muggle world, the Hogwarts Express is a steam train known as The Jacobite, which runs on the West Highland Line between Fort William and Mallaig in Scotland.

Travelling along the West Highland Line is a breathtaking experience with stunning scenery of kaleidoscopic-coloured moors, snow-capped mountains, shimmering lochs and rugged coast. Taking the Jacobite steam train along the ‘iron road to the Isles’ conjures a unique kind of magic for Harry Potter fans and railway enthusiasts.

Described as the ‘greatest railway journey in the world’, the 84 miles (135 km) round trip outward bound leg starts at Fort William, near Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis.

Around 40 minutes into the journey, the train slows down – and may pause – as it crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct. While looking around for Harry and Ron in the flying Ford Anglia to appear, you cannot miss the spectacular view of Loch Shiel and the surrounding mountains to your left.

View of Loch Shiel while onboard the Jacobite steam train on the Glenfinnan Viaduct

Loch Shiel (used for filming Hogwarts Lake in the Harry Potter movies) and scenic Highlands landscape – I took the photo while onboard the Jacobite steam train on the Glenfinnan Viaduct – image: © The Train Hacker Images/Chris P King

Loch Shiel from the Glenfinnan Viaduct is a picture-postcard classic view of the Scottish Highlands, and Potter fans may recognise it as it’s one of two locations used to film Hogwarts Great Lake. After the viaduct, the train doesn’t go onto Hogwarts, but you’ll be far from disappointed about the rest of the trip.

After the viaduct, the train stops at Glenfinnan before continuing its journey. Around 3 miles (5 km) after the station, on the right-hand side, you’ll start to run alongside Loch Eilt.

Towards the end of Loch Eilt – around 3 miles (5 km) later – you’ll be on the part of the track used for filming the Hogwarts Express in the movies and near the island of Dumbledore’s grave.

The Jacobite continues through stunning Highlands countryside and coastal scenery before finishing at the busy fishing port of Mallaig. Most passengers will spend a short time here before returning to Fort William; however, for others, Mallaig is the jumping-off point for ferries to the Isle of Skye.

The operators of The Jacobite – West Coast Railways – provided the Hogwarts Express steam engine and carriages for the Harry Potter films. Some of the first-class carriages in The Jacobite are similar to those in the movies.

The Jacobite: 2024 Dates and times

The 2024 season dates have not been announced yet. We’ll post them here as soon as we have news.

The Jacobite has a morning round-trip service from Fort William between 3 April and 27 October 2023, plus an afternoon service between 1 May and 29 September 2023. In both cases, trains run seven days a week.

Why not combine your trip with a tour of the Scottish Highlands?

Harry Potter-style compartments

Harry Potter-style first-class compartments are open to book on morning services only. These enclosed compartments seat six people with a door that leads to a corridor running the entire length of the carriage.

Food and drink

Jacobite high tea, an artisan cheese selection, chocolates and champagne are available when booking. And on the day, there are more snacks and beverages.

Potter fans can buy chocolate frogs, liquorice wands and brews, and other Harry Potter souvenirs.

Booking The Jacobite

We recommend you book your Jacobite trip as early as possible . It sells out months in advance, and there’s only limited availability the rest of the time.

If you cannot book a seat directly, Scottish Highlands tours from Edinburgh and Inverness include riding Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express.

While riding the Harry Potter train is a magical experience, I highly recommend seeing more of the Scottish Highlands. For a Scotland adventure, combine a trip on the Hogwarts Express with a Highlands tour.

And with direct bookings on The Jacobite selling out so fast, it may be the only way to take the train. We recommend these 2023 Hogwarts Express train tours, which include the Scottish Highlands and Islands.

Tours of the Scottish Highlands, which include riding the Jacobite steam train, are popular. You must book as soon as possible, early in the season.

Hogwarts Express Train Tours >>

Edinburgh is one of Britain’s most magnificent cities with plenty of things to do for tourists. However, Scotland is full of beautiful places. Why not take a day trip from Edinburgh by train and visit cosmopolitan Glasgow, historical Stirling, seaside North Berwick, Pitlochry’s whisky distilleries, the ‘home of golf’ at St Andrews or Falkirk’s Kelpies?

Harry Potter Film Locations to Look Out for on Route

On the journey from Fort William to Mallaig, look out for these locations used in the Harry Potter movies.

Glenfinnan Viaduct

The Glenfinnan Viaduct is featured as the Hogwarts Express bridge in the Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban and the Goblet of Fire. Crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct is impossible to miss, and the Jacobite will go very slowly and may even pause.

Here are some clips featuring the Glenfinnan Viaduct from the Harry Potter films:

  • Harry and Ron cross the bridge in their flying Ford Anglia in the Chamber of Secrets. See clip 47 secs .
  • Dementor attacks the train while on the viaduct in the Prisoner of Azkaban. See clip 53 secs .
  • Crossing the viaduct on the way to Hogwarts in the Goblet of Fire. See clip 1 min 17 secs .

Loch Shiel in real life compared to Harry Potter movie scenes

Loch Shiel in real life compared to scenes from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Triwizard tournament (top) and crossing the bridge on the way to Hogwarts (bottom) – images: Lee Maynard (top left) & Dallas Epperson (bottom left)

Loch Shiel was one of two locations used as Hogwarts Great Lake (alternatively known as the Black Lake) and featured in the Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire and the Half-Blood Prince. Look left while you’re on the Glenfinnan Viaduct for a marvellous view of Loch Shiel.

Here are some clips featuring Loch Shiel from the Harry Potter films:

  • Buckbeat dips his toe in the water in the Prisoner of Azkaban. See clip 2 mins, 35 secs .
  • The second task of the Triwizard Tournament in the Goblet of Fire. See clip 41 secs .
  • Hogwarts and the loch are in the background when crossing the viaduct. See clip 1 min, 20 secs .
  • Harry and Hermione are looking out across the loch in the final scene of Half-Blood Prince. See the beginning of the clip .

Loch Eilt and Eilean na Moine island in real life and Harry Potter movies

Loch Eilt and island – Eilean na Moine – in real life and scenes from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (top right) and Goblet of Fire (bottom) – image: Colin Kinnear (top left)

Loch Elit featured in shots of Hogwarts grounds, and an island on the loch – called Eilean na Moine – was used as the place of Dumbledore’s grave. They appeared in the Chamber of Secrets, the Prisoner of Azkaban, the Goblet of Fire, and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2.

Around 3 miles (5 km) after the stop at Glenfinnan, Loch Eilt will come into sight on the right side of the train. About the same distance again, just before the loch goes out of view, you will see Eilean na Moine lying a short distance from the shore.

Here are some clips featuring Loch Eilt and the island Eilean na Moine from the Harry Potter films:

  • Harry and Ron fly over the Hogwarts Express and Loch Eilt in the Chamber of Secrets. See clip 1 min 58 secs .
  • Harry, Hermione, and Ron discover Buckbeat’s fate from Hagrid as he skims stones in the Prisoner of Azkaban. See the beginning of the clip . Eilean na Moine is the island to the right of Hagrid.
  • Shot of the train and the loch before the Dementor attack on the bridge in Prisoner of Azkaban. See the opening 12 secs of the clip .
  • Hogwarts Express travels alongside the loch, and Harry releases Hedwig, his pet Snowy Owl in the Goblet of Fire. See clip 1 min 11 secs . From the same clip at 1 min 17 secs , Eilean na Moine is the island to the left of the flying white owl.
  • Voldemort stealing the elder wand from Dumbledore’s grave, filmed on Eilean na Moine (although the island is superimposed onto another loch, Loch Arkaig). End of Deathly Hallows – Part 1. See the beginning of the clip . It is repeated in the opening scene of Deathly Hallows – Part 2. See the beginning of the clip .

I’ve done this trip myself and highly recommend spending some time at both ends of the railway at Fort William and the Isle of Skye (via a ferry from Mallaig). Here are my tips to get the most out of your trip.

1. Photography on the train

Bring your best camera as you’ll get some beautiful photos. Harry Potter aside, Scotland’s west coast has breathtaking scenery yearly.

For the best scenic shots, shoot your photos from the doors at the end of the carriages. The Jacobite train has traditional British carriages with sliding windows, so you don’t have to worry about shooting through dirty windows or reflections.

Don’t be greedy and hog the space around the carriage doors. Be courteous to other passengers who may want to take photos from there, especially when going over the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

2. Glasgow and Edinburgh to Fort William by train

Train travel lovers and rail pass holders will love the Glasgow Queen Street to Fort William leg of the West Highland Line. Of course, if you’re starting your Jacobite steam train journey from Mallaig, you can travel in the other direction.

The journey between Glasgow Queen Street – on the West Highland Line – to Fort William takes around 3 hours and 45 minutes. The journey takes under 5 hours from Edinburgh, changing once at Glasgow Queen Street.

Save money on your train fare with discounted Railcards . Tickets for this journey are available from  ScotRail .

View of Fort William and surrounding area from the Nevis Range

3. Fort William travel

Fort William is known as ‘the outdoor capital of the UK’ and lives up to its reputation. We did some walking and sightseeing at Glencoe, Glenfinnan (and got up close to the viaduct) and took a gondola to the Nevis Range.

To get straight into the heart of the action, the Caledonian Sleeper train from London to Fort William will whisk you up to the Highlands. Known as ‘The Deerstalker’, it’s another of Britain’s most excellent rail trips. You’ll wake up to see the Scottish Highlands in all their glory during the spring and summer months.

We hired a car for a few days to explore the area from Fort William, and our hire company conveniently delivered our vehicle to Fort William Station.

Fort William has a diverse and high-quality range of hotels and guest houses near the station. Take your pick from these places to stay .

4. Isle of Skye travel

Rail travellers who are going to the Isle of Skye (and you really should as it’s incredible!), can pick up the train again at Kyle of Lochalsh. You can travel east along the beautiful Kyle Line to Inverness from there.

Skye Car Hire – who we used – can deliver a car to you at Armdale, the island ferry port connected to Mallaig. Spend some time on the Isle of Skye and drop the car off later at Kyle of Lochalsh.

We stayed at the wonderful and highly recommended Hallaig Guest House in a remote area near Trotternish Ridge. It’s an ideal place for exploring Isle of Skye’s favourites – the Quiraing and the Old Man of Storr. Our hospitable hosts cooked the most delicious seafood meals, including fresh salmon from the river next to the guest house.

We also spent two nights at the Marmalade Hotel in Portree , an ideal base for visiting other parts of the island while soaking up the evening atmosphere of the island’s capital.

Warner Bros The Making of Harry Potter: Platform 9 3/4 Hogwarts Express

The Platform 9 3⁄4 set at Warner Brothers: The Making of Harry Potter is the next best thing if you can’t ride Scotland’s Hogwarts Express. Situated just outside London, Platform 9 3/4 is more than a recreated film set.

  • ‘Orton Hall’ British steam no. 5972, the steam locomotive used throughout the Harry Potter series of films
  • Interior carriage set for shots filmed inside the train (complete with unique windows that the visual effects artists used to create iconic train scenes from the movies, such as the escape of Harry’s first Chocolate Frog and the Dementor attack)
  • Platform 9 3/4 luggage trolley as it disappears into the yellow brick wall
  • A selection of prop luggage used in the films

Warner Brothers: The Making of Harry Potter has much more to experience, including the Great Hall, Forbidden Forest, Diagon Alley, props, costumes and a showcase of special and visual effects.

Tickets for Warner Brothers: The Making of Harry Potter

Like the Hogwarts Express in Scotland, The Making of Harry Potter sells fast. Buy tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment, especially during the summer school holidays.

Select Day:

Day 1 - Edinburgh - Jacobite Steam Train - Portree (Isle of Skye)

We set off from the capital in the morning and admire the majestic Stirling Castle perched atop a volcanic rock. We continue through Rob Roy MacGregor country and slip from the lowlands into the Highlands.

After a refreshment break, we travel over the vast wilderness of Rannoch Moor and stop to admire the dramatic scenery of Glen Coe , one of Scotland’s most impressive landmarks.

A drive along the banks of Loch Linnhe brings us to Fort William. Here, we board the World-famous Jacobite Steam Train  for an unforgettable trip on the West Highland Railway.

Our journey will take us along the banks of Loch Eil, and then the breathtaking curve of the Glenfinnan Viaduct will sweep us past the head of Loch Shiel and the impressive monument to Bonnie Prince Charlie . Harry Potter fans will remember this scene from the movies.

Next, we travel along the banks of Loch Eilt, then past the spectacular silver sands of Morar.

Journey's end is the historic fishing port of Mallaig, where we board a modern ferry for the short crossing “over the sea to Skye”. Our home for the next two nights will be in the picturesque fishing port of Portree with its colourful harbour.

Departures in April and October will operate in reverse, with the Jacobite Steam Train Trip being on day three (Mallaig to Fort William).

Overnight: Portree, Isle of Skye (2 nights)

Day 2 - Exploring the Isle of Skye

Today we experience the breathtaking scenery, rich history and vibrant Gaelic culture of the  Isle of Skye .

The soaring peaks of the Cuillin Hills will accompany us on much of our journey today. The Cuillins have the greatest concentration of tall peaks in Britain and are a firm favourite with climbers the World over. There will be stops so you can savour the vistas which are truly unforgettable.

Dunvegan Castle has an idyllic loch side setting and is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland – it's been the ancestral home and stronghold of the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod for 800 years. On your optional visit to the castle, you can view ancient clan treasures, Jacobite relics and the famous Fairy Flag. Why not explore the elegant walled garden and the water garden, with its gentle walking trails?

A trip around the coastline of Trotternish is a trip through time itself.

Today we are following the coastal road through long-established villages to visit the grave of Flora MacDonald who helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape the Government troops who were searching for him. You’ll be in awe as your driver/guide tells you the story of her fascinating life.

As our scenic drive continues, you’ll be able to investigate the mysterious rock formations of The Old Man of Storr, The Quiraing and Kilt Rock, a spectacular 200 foot (61m) sea cliff.

Day 3 - Portree - Loch Ness - Edinburgh

We say goodbye to the Isle of Skye as we leave the island over the Skye Bridge. On our way east, we admire beautiful Eilean Donan Castle , one of Scotland’s most famous icons.

Our journey takes us to the Dundreggan Rewilding Centre, hidden in the heart of the Highlands. Here, we learn about the amazing work of Trees for Life, a charity dedicated to restoring Scotland’s ancient Caledonian Pine Forest.

We’re ready for some monster hunting! Our destination is Loch Ness, where we pause and try to spot legendary Nessie while relaxing on the shores of Fort Augustus.

On our drive through the Great Glen, we visit the Commando Memorial, with breathtaking views of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain.

Next, we travel through the beauty of the  Cairngorms National Park and the Grampian Mountains.

We visit the quaint village of  Dunkeld  with its historic cathedral sitting on the banks of the River Tay before continuing through Perthshire, a land of forests, rivers and mountains.

Returning to Edinburgh, we enjoy one last spectacular sight: the historic Forth Bridge , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We reach the capital in the early evening.

Luggage larger than this will only be carried if space is available.

Should I make dinner reservations for an evening meal in Portree?

Yes! Portree is the capital and main town on the Isle of Skye, and therefore is a very popular destination, especially in the summer months. There are many excellent restaurants in Portree , and they tend to get pretty busy, so we strongly recommend making reservations for your evening meal to avoid disappointment.

We advise not making your dinner reservations for any earlier than 7pm to allow plenty of time for the coach to return to Portree, after a full day of exploring the wonders of the Magical Isle.

Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain's most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!

The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan (see below and subject to time permitting). Beyond Glenfinnan are the beautiful villages of Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig. You may alight at Arisaig by request to the guard. From here, on a clear summer's day, you can see the "Small Isles" of Rum, Eigg, Muck, Canna and the southern tip of Skye. The train continues on from here passing Morar and the silvery beaches used in the films "Highlander" and "Local Hero".

MALLAIG IS OUR DESTINATION

But as the travelling is as much a part of the experience as the arrival we hope you enjoy this spectacular railway journey, regarded as one of the greatest in the world.

FORT WILLIAM

Fort William, the largest town in the Highlands and situated at the southern end of the Great Glen, lies in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britains highest mountain. This area is a fine location to use as a base to discover the West Highlands.

We cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct (a location made famous in the Harry Potter films) which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. The train may pause on the viaduct, time permitting, to allow you to take in the magnificent view. Subject to time permitting, we will stop at Glenfinnan station. Once stopped in Glenfinnan there will be time to stretch your legs and, if you wish, visit the West Highland Railway Museum located in the restored station building. The Jacobite may also stop at Arisaig by request to the guard.

The village of Arisaig (the Safe Place) is centred on the sheltered shore of Loch nan Ceall (Loch of the Cells). From this very tranquil village it is possible to take the boat, The Sheerwater to the Small Isles (until mid September). The local Highland Games takes place here annually on the last Wednesday in July at Traigh Farm.

The end of the line, Mallaig was founded during the 1840s when the owner of the North Morar Estate, Lord Lovat, divided up the farm on the coast here into a series of parcels of land and encouraged his tenants living around Loch Morar and Loch Nevis to resettle in what became Mallaig and establish a fishing village. Today Mallaig is a busy fishing port and ferry terminal with services to Skye, the Small Isles and to the Knoydart Peninsula to visit Inverie and the most remote pub on mainland Britain, The Old Forge. In addition, you can board MV Western Isles for a scenic Wildlife Cruise. Arriving in Mallaig we have over an hour and a half to enjoy a walk round and take in the atmosphere: there are shops, bars, restaurants and plenty of fish and chips to be enjoyed during the lunchtime stopover.

This Harry Potter-themed Amtrak Train Is the Hogwarts Express of the Northeast — Here's Where to Board

Four Amtrak trains dedicated to “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" will transport passengers along its Northeast Corridor.

trip on harry potter train

Matt Donnelly/Courtesy of Amtrak

Forget Platform 9¾. All you need to do to make it to Hogwarts is step aboard an Amtrak train along the Northeast Corridor.

Recently, Amtrak announced it’s the official rail transportation partner for the Broadway show “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” now playing at the Lyric Theatre in New York City. And with the partnership, it’s bringing Amtrak Guest Rewards members a few unique perks. Members can now earn (and redeem) points when they purchase tickets for the show via its other program, Audience Rewards.

But that’s not all. Rewards members, Broadway fans, and muggles alike can also enjoy a bit of whimsy over the coming months thanks to four specially wrapped Amtrak trains traveling along the Northeast Regional service route between Washington, D.C., and Boston.

According to a statement by Amtrak, “the eye-catching train wrap features the show’s iconic logo along with  Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy and the next generation of wizards: Albus Potter, Scorpius Malfoy, and Rose Granger-Weasley. The swirling clock will give you visions of time travel as you ride through the illustrious landscapes of the [northeast corridor]. While this train won’t be stopping at Platform 9 ¾, you’ll be sure to have a magical journey on the [northeast corridor].”

Of course, this is far from the only perk of being an Amtrak Rewards Member. As Travel + Leisure previously explained , members can earn and redeem points on everything from train travel to hotels, car rentals, and even at partner retailers like Amazon and Apple, along with a number of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. Rewards members can also cash in their points for gift cards to various restaurants, including Applebee's, Outback, Red Lobster, and more, so in theory, you could turn a trip to Broadway on Amtrak into dinner and a show fairly easily.

And really, the only way to get to New York City faster would be to just yell out "Apparate!"
