ABOUT TRIPPIE REDD:

One of the most versatile and creatively daring artists in hip-hop today, Trippie Redd makes music that’s both wildly experimental and massively appealing. Since delivering his debut mixtape  A Love Letter to You  in 2017, the multi-platinum-selling, chart-topping rapper, singer/songwriter has continually defied genre boundaries, embedding his melodic take on rap with frenetic elements of rock-and-roll and heavy metal. And with his penetrating lyrics and nuanced but hard-hitting vocal performance, the 23-year-old Ohio native matches that endless ingenuity with a powerfully raw emotional impact.

Racking up over 30 billion streams to date and having seven consecutive projects land in the Top 5 of the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, Trippie Redd has evolved from budding Soundcloud rapper to a global powerhouse. Not only has he collaborated with some of today’s biggest names in music including Drake, Future, Travis Scott, XXXTENTACION, Juice WRLD, Travis Barker, Illenium, Marshmello and more, but he also made his acting debut during an episode of Lil Dicky’s critically acclaimed  DAVE  followed by an appearance on Machine Gun Kelly’s  Good Mourning . His 2021 album,  Trip At Knight  featuring single “Miss The Rage” featuring Playboi Carti, brought a #1 debut on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and went on to amass over 3 billion streams, while his  Mansion Musik  mixtape followed, earlier this year, landing a #1 debut on the same chart. Named one of the ‘Top 50 Most Streamed Rappers on Spotify,’ Trippie Redd plans to continue to break boundaries and cement his status as one of the best in the game.

ABOUT LUCKI:

LUCKI separated himself from the pack years ago. He built a devoted fan following by creating songs packed with vulnerability and experience. His lyrics proved to be far more personal than preachy. In 2022, the same year the 26-year-old rapper released his debut album, FLAWLESS LIKE ME, the Chicago native achieved over 25,000 sales first week and reached #12 on the charts.

LUCKI showed growth, maturity, and perspective—without losing the soul that made him relatable. “Super Urus” and “New Drank” are recent massive reminders, with over 50 million streams each, that a versatile artist who had a powerful introduction during the mid-2010s is still on the ascent.

LC Camel, Jr. hails from Chicago’s storied West Side. Now a father, LUCKI has credited his parents for their dedication. In 2013, roughly a year into recording, the budding artist self-released Alternative Trap inspired by an array of sounds. The free mixtape arrived amid a Chicago Rap Renaissance that thoughtful and innovative young people helmed. At just 17, the rapper, then known as Lucki Eck$, captured the angst and confusion of his peer group with a streak for the wild side. The Chicago Reader credited him as the city’s “best conscious rapper” not long after. He became a sought-out collaborator across styles, working with FKA Twigs, Danny Brown, Future, Playboi Carti, and Earl Sweatshirt. The project caught on, earning critical acclaim and putting LUCKI on the international map.

In the years that followed, LUCKI abbreviated his moniker to match his given name. He also launched the Freewave EP series, a display of quantity without compromising quality. Despite the expanding catalog, in mid-2016, 20-year-old LUCKI stepped out of the spotlight for nearly a year to be a proper father and self-care. In lyrics and interviews, the artist has been transparent about bouts with depression, prescription drug addiction, and a social disconnect.

By 2017, LUCKI returned to form, releasing a slew of projects. “Sunset” reached a new peak, streaming over 40 million times to date, with an enchanting beat and confessional lyrics. In 2019, Lucki’s Days B4 III built on that momentum, powered by anthems like “4 The Betta” and “Randomly.” Raps about relationships, hopelessness, and isolation resonated alongside messages from an independent artist who was clearly thriving on his own terms.

In 2022, LUCKI upped the ante. Future and EMPIRE label-mate Babyface Ray guest on the FLAWLESS LIKE ME album that finds the 26-year-old more comfortable with himself but still admittedly growing. A leading voice in Rap, LUCKI commands the 24-track album, which he considers his debut. To support the album, which nearly entered the Top 10, LUCKI performed sold-out concerts in London and Canada, as well as a sold out 25 city tour in the beginning of 2023. As he prepares to celebrate a decade of originality, authenticity, and consistent growth, LUCKI has cemented an incredible legacy, even if he is still writing it in real-time.

It was underwhelming tbh , they played nothing of this year , every song was out dated , times were pushed trippie only showed up for 5 minutes and left , honestly the biggest let down of a concert , in a way I kinda felt bad for trippie cause I think it was a lot of pressure , every other artist was not hyping the crowd and everyone was expecting trippie , overall bad but glad I was with the homies

I just saw Trippie Redd in Philadelphia at the Filmore, and I had a great time, except for the venue. It was very small, and the magnificent energy he brought to the crowd was too much for the venue to handle. Amazing show, but without Kodie Shane, there would be no opening acts. Blocboi JB was terrible, as was this random guy Flash Gotti. Great show, disappointing openers and venue.

Trippie Redd put on a great show, it's sad it was so short, but i think thay was the group Endless Entertainment's fault. Thay had about ten openers, and people were very upset on how long that had to wait. Not only that, Endless Entertainment posted that it was only trippie redd, which may be another reason why so many people were mad. Other than that, the show was amazing.

This guy played for 30 minutes, took a 40 minute break and then came back for 10 minutes stating a very lame excuse for the long break (that he couldn't smoke on stage). I wasn't there as a big fan, but not sure how his fans could stand to go back to see him again knowing how he treats them? Disappointing show.

Crazy show. Trippie was incredible his openers were awesome as well very cool people everyone was friendly and everyone was doing the most they could to put on a show for the fans. I would highly reccomend this show to everyone truly amazing time

Trippie Redd is a powerful and soulful entertainer. The crowd loved him. I had a good time. The crowd sang with him; many times, they sang without him which was awesome; he loved it, because they knew all the words.

Not really my type of music that I'm interested, but I went with my brother and a couple of really close friends who like him and we had such a great time. I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would!

Fukin lit. Easily the best concert I’ve been too. Plus u played some of his unreleased songs but I knew them cuz I love Trippie Redd. Whole cloud was into it. Could’ve been a little longer tho.

Concert got rescheduled 3 hours prior to event start time. This is a little bit annoying considering my friends and I got time off work to go to this, which was all for nothing.

Take a Tour of Trippie Redd’s All-Black $7.5 Million Mansion

Trippie Redd  goes all-black everything for the exterior of his Florida mansion. The 24-year-old rapper debuts the new look of his luxury home , and gives a tour inside.

The 19,000-square-foot home, which is situated in the Southwest Ranches suburb of Broward County, Fla., once had the typical white facade for many southern homes in the region. On April 2, Trippie unveiled the entire transformation of the outside of the home. Everything, including the driveway, is black.

Trippie Redd's All-Black Mansion

"The Black House 🏡 black is beautiful from my skin to even stars in a jet black sky 🖤," he posted on Instagram with a photo of the all-black mansion.

The same day, fellow rapper DDG shared a vlog on his YouTube channel in which Trippie gave a tour of the home. Trippie bought the property for $7.5 million in 2022. He says the owner initially listed the mansion for $12.5 million a year before Trippie purchased it. The previous owner was getting ready to foreclose on the property so the rhymer got it for a steal.

During the tour, Trippie confirms he has nine bedrooms, a basketball court, piano room and a $30,000 bed he had made because the initial Rick Owens-designed bed he wanted was too expensive. In 2010, a Rick Owens bed sold for $216,000.

Trippie can certainly afford such an expensive pad. He recently released the joint EP, genre : sadboy , with MGK. This marks more than 20 projects Trippie has dropped during his career. With mutliplatinum certifications, several top five-charting albums on the Billboard 200 and lauded tracks like "Love Scars," "F**k Love" with XXXTentaction and "Dark Knight Dummo" featuring Travis Scott, among others, his catalog of music has afforded him a lifestyle of luxury.

Emo rap at its limits, in straining to do its source material justice, a new collab highlights what made the collision of rap and pop-punk so effective in the first place.

MGK (Machine Gun Kelly) and Trippie Redd at the March 21 listening party for their collaborative EP, g enre : sadboy , at Harriet's Rooftop in West Hollywood.

At the start of this century, as MySpace and LiveJournal were remaking the social hierarchies of youth culture, a crushing wave surged into mainstream view. The aesthetic movement that history would designate as emo's third wave stood out in a few ways from its predecessors: more brazenly commercial than the melodic post-hardcore that birthed the term in the 1980s, more flamboyant and feminized than the Midwest twinkle that carried the torch in the '90s. Emo as it existed in the early 2000s was an era of high contrast, the music and culture broadly maligned yet deeply felt in the hearts of teenagers everywhere, catalyzed by the new ways they were experiencing too much of everything as a shared world took shape online. "With the internet, teenagers have the ultimate emo tool," Andy Greenwald wrote in his 2003 emo history, Nothing Feels Good : "a private medium that their parents don't understand, one where they can easily trade, access, and share music, ideas, news, feelings, and support."

Years later, the SoundCloud rap of the late 2010s would experience a similar popular awakening — only now, the kids were using that ultimate emo tool to not only share music, but to make and distribute it. In 2017, as in 2003, the music that emerged from the sanctity and isolation of teenagers' bedrooms seemed to codify adolescent tragedy into its own folklore. Both emo and the rap forged in its image riffed on their alternative forebears and synthesized them into an explosive, angst-powered frenzy. Both, like internet culture and youth itself, felt fleeting, which may explain why their mainstream relevance was so ephemeral.

Stressed Out: How 'Mind Playing Tricks On Me' Gave Anxiety A Home In Hip-Hop

World Cafe Words and Music Podcast

Get to know colson baker, the person behind machine gun kelly.

What is fascinating about genre: sadboy is how, in gesturing vacantly at an idea of emo, the project demonstrates just what made the most intriguing emo rap so effective in the first place. The grayscale guitars here muster little complexity, far from the twilight palettes of their inspiration, and the two lyricists underdeliver both as flexers and as martyrs. Emo is a literalist form, and when paired with the forwardness of rap bluster, the combination can be so overwhelming it scans as sincerity. This duo never summons enough bluster to bring their severity into relief, but there also isn't anything provocative happening along the music's dividing lines. "I'm sufferin' from boredom in suburbia / I need a hit of euphoria," MGK groans over a washed-out Frou Frou sample. Trippie can conjure a melodrama that isn't that far off from Gerard Way or Adam Lazzara, but his is a pantomime that is nearly prosaic. Even the most successful emo rappers produced plenty of awful songs, but they usually did so in service of reinvention. Peep's early music tapped directly into his source material — Mineral and Brand New and Death Cab for Cutie — until he eventually found his mojo without the samples. Juice was channeling the bounce and burst of the sound's migration to pop radio into run-on rap flows. X saw the correlation between screamo vocals and pit aggression and the sub-rattling, thrash-rap howling emerging in South Florida. In each case, a genuine link is being made. The songs on genre : sadboy feel not only removed from origination, but from function.

In Nothing Feels Good , Greenwald writes of the emo kid as a figure disenfranchised by the media and preoccupied with their own private drama, however shallow. Emo music, he says, resonates an art form that "privileges that very same drama — that forces no difficult questions, just bemoans the lack of answers." Its power is in the force and finesse of the bemoaning and the dynamic shifts between those extremities, how small a feeling can get or how intensely it can blot out reality. It's in the pacifying thrum of " It just takes some time " or the shrieking shortsighted optimism of " If I could find you now, things would get better ."

Rap variations of this mode — Lil Uzi Vert 's " XO Tour Llif3 ," or Juice WRLD's " Robbery " — can make the mundane feel urgent. Trippie once demonstrated an ability to do this, too: When he was 16, he recorded " Love Scars " in a single take in a dark room, and that song seems to shudder with a stress to be heard. That genre : sadboy feels more like an afterthought could be blamed in part on the comfort of fame, but its dulled edges are the kind that most often come with age. Emo is a teen kingdom, ruled by the inability to see anything beyond one's own bruised ego, and that myopic sense of self grows less engaging the longer it stays in control. Emo rap's biggest stars never had to reckon with this reality. Peep and Juice WRLD had just turned 21 when they died. XXXTentacion was 20. Their angst is eternally unprocessed, undeveloped, immature (a reality made more apparent by the diminishing returns of their many posthumous releases). The thing about the rest of the sad boys is, they have to grow up someday. The time always comes where the difficult questions require real action.

Simple Plan said it : Nothing lasts forever, and we can't go back. We can no more replicate the intensity of the emo rap moment as we can relive high school. The artists who carry that legacy now are the ones who seem to understand that the genre binary never had to be so binary. It could be rangy and free, fun and anarchic — floating on a matrix between the two axes off toward something else entirely. You can still hear what Greenwald called the CIY ("create it yourself") ethos in the work of Lil Tracy and Wicca Phase Springs Eternal and Powfu . It's that generative spark — that immense, overwhelming feeling of needing to shout into the void, even when you don't necessarily have the language to really express yourself — that is missing from most attempts to capture what is lost. Somewhere, way off in the distance, there is likely another revival brewing, incited by whatever the next breakthrough in social mechanics may be. And even that, eventually, will pass.

Trippie Redd Reveals He Isn’t a Father

In video footage via Daily Loud’s Twitter , presumably cut or leaked from a vlog DDG posted to his YouTube page on Tuesday (April 2), DDG asked Trippie about fatherhood while receiving a tour of Trippie’s massive $13 million black-out mansion. The conversation arose considering the two entered that chapter of their lives around the same time. However, in response to DDG’s question, Trippie unveiled the shocking news that after taking a DNA test, it was revealed that he is not a dad.

“How’s fatherhood?” DDG inquired. “I feel like we had a kid around the same time.”

The Ohio rhymer replied, “Bruh, I got a DNA test. I don’t even got a kid.”

An evidently flabbergasted DDG says, “For real?”

Trippie continued, “I swear, bro. I thought I did, and then I told the world that. Like, ahead of time, I never got no DNA test. And I ended up getting a DNA test and it wasn’t my kid.”

DDG followed up with additional questions: “You did one DNA test? Did he look like you?” Trippie replied, “Two.” DDG then asked, “And they both were negative?”

Trippie went on to explain the ordeal. “My mom was like, very like, get a DNA test,” he began. You know how moms be. They be knowing. She was like, ‘Get a DNA test.'”

“So, did it like, did it kind of mess with you a little bit?” DDG probed. Trippie transparently said “yes.” “I feel like all the things I was going through during that time was like, really f**king with me,” he said. “That’s why I couldn’t go on tour, or like, couldn’t do shows and s**t. I couldn’t really get in my spunk, and feel good and s**t. It was a lot of s**t going on. Just a lot of confusion. I mean, it’s life. A lot of s**t just happens. Maybe it happened for a reason.”

DDG went on to offer Trippie empathy. He then asked, “So you was like, with the kid and s**t and then?” Trippie responded with “yeah.” “Hell yeah,” Trippie continued. “Buying clothes and s**t, holding ’em, kissing ’em.”

It’s worth noting that the clip that emerged online of Trippie sharing that he isn’t a father isn’t included in the vlog DDG uploaded to YouTube. It’s unclear how this particular portion of the video made its way onto the internet.

Review | Machine Gun Kelly and Trippie Redd’s album ‘genre : sadboy’ may be the worst release of 2024

Byline photo of Evan Weidl

The album “genre : sadboy” in one word, a yikes.

Hip-hop artists Trippie Redd and Machine Gun Kelly teamed up for a 10-song EP titled “genre : sadboy,” released on March 29.

My expectations for the artists were low, and the title somehow lowered them even further. With over 25 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone, Trippie Redd is one of the more prominent hip-hop artists of the late 2010s, boasting hits such as “Dark Knight Dummo” and “Miss the Rage.” While there was a time and place for Trippie’s style, he has released nothing but lengthy, milquetoast albums in the last few years. These days, his creative juices run like water in the Atacama Desert.

I make no exaggerations when I say that Machine Gun Kelly, or MGK, might be the worst major artist of the last decade. After getting bullied out of the rap game by Eminem, he famously switched to pop punk. Sporting cheap mall-punk aesthetics, juvenile songwriting, and ear-scorching vocals, MGK’s music is memorable in all the wrong ways.

Upon announcement of the album, several prominent critics expressed their low expectations for the album on X, formerly known as Twitter, to which MGK responded angrily. A producer whose beat was featured on the album expressed his disappointment in learning that his work was selected for the album, and MGK and Trippie responded by informing him that his work had been removed from the album.

Perhaps “genre : saltyboy” would have been a more appropriate title.

While the album’s 10-track duration clocks in at only 27 minutes, the duo pulled off the remarkable achievement of time travel. By the last song, “summer’s gone,” I felt like I had been listening for 27 weeks.

It was as if I was trapped in a “Groundhog Day”-type scenario except, instead of every day repeating, each track repeated the same uninspiring, shallow garbage. Like Bill Murray’s character, I was very eager to move past every song, only to experience the same thing with each successive track.

“genre : sadboy” is one of the worst albums I’ve ever heard. If this were the first album I had ever listened to, I’d think God created music to punish humanity.
