L’accesso è consentito ad un massimo di 60 persone al giorno e solo tramite visite guidate . La prenotazione è obbligatoria e puoi acquistare i biglietti online solo con Promobellagio su questo portale .

The hystory of Villa Serbelloni

The park of Villa Serbelloni according to you

The guided tour in the garden of Villa Serbelloni is really fantastic. You will walk in one of the most beautiful environments you have ever seen and will get amazing views at every corner into the different arms of lake Como.

Great history and unbelievable views!

Really loved our guide and the inside peak at the park of the Rockefeller Foundation’s very cool Villa Serbelloni. Pliny the Younger may have had a Villa here, and it was later developed by the Visconti family in part due to its strategic location. This is a vigorous walk up and down steep hillsides but in wide, stone paved roads. One of best activities of our trip.

A sunny afternoon walk into a beautiful nature park

…This tour offers one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen as we walked uphill. The views of the lake and the Italian Alps along with the lake and its towns is stunning. Bring your camera!

Villa Serbelloni - Bellagio - Lake Como

Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio

Villa Serbelloni has a very ancient history, already property of the Sfondrati family in 1566, passed on to be property of Count Alessandro Serbelloni to whom he dedicated his soul and body. The external aspect, extensive but with simple lines, was not changed; the inside was carefully decorated, from the vaulted and coffered ceilings, to the paintings and pieces of art. The Duke Serbelloni , however, was more interested in the immense park than the villa, and spending exorbitant figures, had tracks suitable for vehicles, driveways, and paths build for an extension of nearly 18 km.

The Duke died in Bellagio, in 1826, the villa was passed onto his children, Giovan Battista and Ferdinando , and progressively fell into disuse after the death of them and their heirs. In 1870 they rented the property to Antonio Mella who made it an annex of the Great Britain Hotel ; in the end, in 1907 they sold it to a Swiss company who turned it into Albergo Serbelloni . The hotel was purchased by Princess Ella Walker who left it as an inheritance in 1959 to the Rockefeller foundation.

Today the villa is used as a place to stay and a meeting place for scholars. Many were the illustrious guests who stayed in the villa, we can remember when it was still the property of the Sfonderati family: Emperor Massimiliano I, Leonardo da Vinci , Lodovico the Moor, Bianca Sforza, and Cardinal Borromeo. In the 19 th century the rank of guests was impressive: Pellico, Moroncelli, Emperor Francesco I, Queen Vittoria, Kaiser Guglielmo, Umberto I; writers such as Manzoni, Grossi, Pindemonte.

The gardens of Villa Serbelloni may be visited every day except Monday, from April 1st to November 1st only by a guided visit which lasts about an hour and a half. Tours begin at 11:00 and 15:00 from the Promobellagio office in Piazza della Chiesa 14, Tel. +39 031 951555. The Park is owned by the Rockefeller Foundation which has kindly allowed the town of Bellagio to organize guided visits.

The Truly Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio on Lake Como – Worth the Top Spot on Your Bucket List!

The elegant Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni on Lake Como

My mother and I were on our way to The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, but my she had no clue where we were heading.

We arrived in Bellagio by ferry with our rental car, courtesy of Auto Europe. The previous day, we had been in Germany and had driven from the Black Forest to Porlezza, via Lago Maggiore.

Disclosure: my car rental was sponsored by Auto Europe and travel insurance by Travelex , both brands I have used and loved in the past. We were hosted by the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni for a one night stay with breakfast. All opinions are always my own.

Driving to the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

I had decided to surprise my mother, and had not told her that we were going to Bellagio, or that we would be staying at The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni! We were the first ones off the ferry and it was a very short drive through the tiny streets of Bellagio to navigate to the hotel.

Driving through the streets of Bellagio

Don’t worry, this is a one way street, and everyone drives very slowly as there are many pedestrians. One of the biggest differences between the US and Europe are the old villages and streets. Besides a few places on the east coast, most of modern America has very wide streets to accommodate larger vehicles. In contrast, ancient European builders did not account for an invention that was to be realized many centuries into the future.

Arriving at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

We pulled into the drive for the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni (GHVS) and were greeted immediately by the valet. We could already see that the hotel was an architectural gem with its scalloped frieze and arched details around the windows.

Arriving at the entrance to Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni on Lake Como

Before I begin to show you our room and the hotel, it is important to note some details about the history and current owners of the Villa. You know how I love to support companies and people who have values of quality, attention to detail and a passion for their business, just as I do? Well, the Grand Hotel is a family-run establishment, in fact, the Bucher family still lives here, and it was evident that meeting and exceeding their guests’ expectations is their ultimate goal.

“In 1872 the villa, which is in pure neo-classical style, was sold and since then it has formed the central nucleus of the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni which was opened in 1873.”  Read more on the hotel site below.

Views from our Room

We checked in and were shown to our room which faced Lake Como. We had three windows with three views! I have always loved Condé Nast Traveler’s “room with a view” feature, and all three views were CN Traveler material.

I think I should warn you at this point: if you subscribe to my posts, you’ll know that I share a lot of photos, and my travel posts tend to be on the longer side due to the fact that I want to share everything with you. However, the number of photos I took while staying at the GHVS is, well–crazy.

There were so many incredible views and so much I wanted to show you, that it’s just impossible to add them all here, although I’m still sharing a lot!  I apologize in advance for the length of this post! It’s difficult for me to narrow down the photos, but do visit the hotel’s own website which has a gorgeous gallery of pictures (link at the bottom of this post).

Rooms at the Grand Hotel

The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni has rooms which are all unique. They are decorated with family pieces and furniture which have been passed down through three generations. In fact, this is the case throughout the entire hotel. It felt as though a museum, a palace, and a family home had magically melded to create the grand hotel’s welcoming atmosphere and stunning accommodations.

We entered through a large sitting room before going into the bedroom; pure luxury surrounded us with high ceilings, gorgeous wallpaper and opulent, yet classy decor.

Room at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

The bathroom was surfaced in white marble and was so spacious and elegant, I could have spent all day relaxing in the tub, but there was so much to see and do (and eat)!

Bathroom at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

The toiletries were packaged and displayed so beautifully, it seemed a pity to open them.

Colorful toiletries from the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

All the beds in the hotel have a unique, decorative quilt; they reminded us of floating beds for pools, but apparently we weren’t the only ones to think this. Still, they were a lovely decorative addition to the rooms.

A few minutes after the bellboy left, he returned with a bottle of sparkling Italian wine, strawberries and a welcome note–what a lovely surprise!

Strawberries and sparkling Italian wine!

We decided to have lunch before popping open the bottle of Franciacorta vino. This is essentially the  Italian version of Champagne. Mum and I admired all the details of the hallways on the way down to the more casual of the two restaurants, La Goletta. Can you believe that these are just the hallways?

collage of hallways and decor at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

La Goletta is located near the pool, with views of palm trees and Lake Como beyond. The à la carte menu had plenty of choices so that there was something for everyone, yet wasn’t overwhelming by any means. We were seated on the terrace and placed our order. A basket of fabulous bread arrived shortly with really good quality extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar which we ate as we waited for our meal, even though I had ordered focaccia!

Bread at lunch at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

It did take quite a long time for our food to arrive, but it was worth the wait. The focaccia I had chosen was filled with burrata cheese and topped with Prosciutto di Parma. I honestly had never seen anything like this and didn’t think that this would be something would be served anywhere in Italy, but it was so wonderful, I now want to make it at home! Update 3/13/2017 I DID make it at home–here’s the recipe for burrata and prosciutto focaccia!

Burrata and Prosciutto Focaccia at The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

Mum had a difficult time deciding, but ultimately chose “ I maccheroni fatti in casa con broccoli, olive, capperi, pomodori secchi ” which translates to, “homemade macaroni (or pasta) with broccoli, olives, capers and dried tomatoes. We were a bit surprised that normal broccoli was used, as usually it’s rapini-type broccoli which is the norm in Italy, but it was very good all the same.

Exploring the Property

After lunch, we took a walk around the pool at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, and its gorgeous gardens (there’s also an indoor pool).

Pool at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

Mum and I were amazed to see that the hotel even has its own sandy beach! May I please just live here?

Sandy beach at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

Mum and I headed back up to our room for a glass of bubbly before venturing into the town of Bellagio, which is literally just outside the the front gate of the hotel.

You may remember me explaining about the different specifications that the Italian government issues on different food and drink on my agriturismo post ? The DOCG label is a mark of quality, ensuring that this Franciacorta sparkling is was top quality. It was a deliciously bubbly, afternoon tipple!

On the way out, we met the hotel manager, Mr. Antonio Calzolaro, who offered to give us a tour of the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, which we were happy to take. He was very jovial with a great sense of humor, but we were happy to learn that his English was much better than our Italian, so we switched to speaking English for the rest of our conversation!

A Tour of the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

Mr. Calzolaro explained that the hotel originally was built in 1850 as a holiday villa for a wealthy family from Milano, but it was sold due to financial difficulties and opened as a hotel in 1873. It has been in the Bucher family for three generations. You can read about the history of the grand hotel on their website, but the period furnishings, frescoes, French-style wall-coverings, Persian rugs and Murano glass chandeliers are much more stunning in person. This is especially true when placed in such an architectural gem such as the GHVS.

coffered ceiling Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni on Lake Como

Mr. Calzolaro told us about movies that have been filmed at the hotel, or nearby such as Bobby Deerfield (with Al Pacino), Star Wars and Casino Royale. Many celebrities, notable people and past presidents have also stayed at the Grand Hotel; we certainly could see why.

Walking in Bellagio

We really enjoyed our hotel tour with Mr. Calzolaro. It was then time to explore Bellagio and to have a wander in those famous streets and passageways.

And look at this–I matched this Vespa perfectly–right down to the tan seat!

Mum practically pushed me to keep walking as we went past this window of Italian candies! How did she find out about my sweet tooth?

The Terrace at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

We walked back to the hotel and relaxed on the terrace overlooking Lake Como where other guests were enjoying a drink, reading or just enjoying the view.

Now do you understand what I was saying about too many beautiful views, everywhere I turned? Here is one more I just have to share–how awesome is this?

Mum pulled me away from this one, too (just kidding), as it was time for a brief meeting with Michelin star Chef Ettore Bocchia, the executive chef for Mistral restaurant. After speaking to him, we couldn’t wait to eat dinner that night. Chef Bocchia introduced the first molecular cuisine menu in Italy and is the creator of many new techniques in the kitchen.

When we went up to our room, I managed to get a sunset photo from our window, just as the sun was falling behind the mountain across the lake. So much beauty in a short time was absolutely awe-inspiring.

Dinner at Mistral Ristorante

My brother, Tony , had told me before I left on this trip, to take Mum out for a really nice dinner somewhere. I couldn’t think of any place that fit the bill, better than Mistral Ristorante. The view from our table was magnificent, especially with the colors from the sunset still hanging in the cloudy sky.

Our sommelier, Emanuele helped us to choose a lovely wine to go with our pasta dishes.

Here is Daniele making my dinner for me. You can click on the photo to see a video of him in action.

One thing I loved about many of the staff is that they had a sense of humor. The waiter who brought out my mother’s entree told her, “Don’t touch! It’s a surprise!” which is why she is laughing in the first photo below.

Mum's gnocchetti sardi at Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

The staff timed our meals to be served at the same time; Daniele finished my pasta and served it when my mother’s gnocchetti arrived. Ta dah!

This has to be one of the most beautiful settings in the world, and with the pasta and wine–sublime.

The pasta also tasted sublime, with the best quality, freshest ingredients and served hot off the pan–absolutely superb. Can you tell I was happy?

Christina Conte (Christina's Cucina) at Mistral, Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, Italy

A dinner to remember, forever. Thank you, Tony and Annie!

We just couldn’t pass up dessert and the tiramisu came highly recommended. Although I’m not of a fan of  “deconstructed” dishes, I’ve reconsidered classifying them all into one group, as I had the best tiramisù I’ve ever tasted at Mistral, and it just so happened to be, “deconstructed”.  Paired with a sweet dessert wine, I wanted every bite to last forever. I’m sure it was due to the impeccable choice of top quality ingredients.

Deconstructed Tiramisu at Mistral

We were served a little tiered tray of sweet bites after our dessert, and they were all very enticing and delicious.

We were intrigued by what was happening at the table next to ours and realized it was the molecular ice cream making with liquid nitrogen! Click the photo for a video clip.

Using liquid nitrogen to make ice cream.

The restaurant manager, Carlo, came to speak to us to make sure everything was satisfactory at the end of our meal and we assured him that it was a superb dinner with impeccable service, too. We had a lovely chat with him and learned that he began working at the hotel in 1985, which I believe says a lot about the owners of the hotel and the way it is run. Carlo ordered limoncello for us which was a perfect ending to a phenomenal meal.

Caffè Concerto Strauss, a piano trio played during our dinner, in fact, I don’t recall them taking a break together; their classical music added so much to the atmosphere that evening.

We returned to our room, but my eye latched onto a beautiful purple handbag in a display, along with other accessories. Mum and I decided we’d visit the Arte e Moda shop in the morning, which was right across the street from the hotel. (See below.)

Display in Hotel

I popped outside to take a walk in the garden as I wanted to experience the hotel grounds at night. Simply spectacular is not an exaggeration in the least, with the peacefulness of the location, the cool night air and the lights twinkling across the lake from Griante–it was magical.

Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni at night

The beds and pillows were so comfortable, both my mother and I slept like babies. I remember waking up, opening my eyes to see the high ceilings and drapes and thinking to myself, “This must be how royalty wakes up”! I got up and threw open the windows and absorbed as much of the scenery, smells and sounds as possible. Can you imagine waking up to this? (Click on the photo.)

Breakfast at GHVS

Our plan for that day was to have breakfast, visit the handbag shop, then begin our drive to Zurich, Switzerland. Breakfast at the hotel is included with the room, and just seeing where breakfast is served is an experience in itself. It was more like an elegant ballroom than a breakfast room!

Look at the exquisite detail in this ceiling!

As expected, the offerings were all top quality and so flavorful. The freshly squeezed juices were fantastic, and the stunning floral arrangement was the crowning glory to the buffet table. The selection was marvelous! Eggs are available if you want them. A soft-boiled egg isn’t an issue, scrambled, or fried, as well.

In addition to the egg, bacon and sausage type breakfast, you can choose to go the Italian route with pastries or even cheeses, ham, cured meats, and tomatoes. There isn’t a chance that someone could complain about the lack of variety in this outstanding buffet.

Arte e Moda Shop

After breakfast, we walked across the street to Arte e Moda, the handbag and accessory shop owned by Pierangelo Masciadri. He explained that he was the designer and showed us a display cabinet. In it there were articles and photos of past US presidents wearing his ties, and letters from them thanking him. Pierangelo’s creations are inspired by mythology and Italian history, which I loved.

My mother wanted me to choose a handbag for my upcoming “big” birthday. We learned how many of Pierangelo’s handbags have a zip-off top flap which can be replaced with another, resulting in a different look without purchasing another bag! Genius! Pierangelo was very genuine and friendly and we had a lovely chat, not only about his designs and creations, but his mother’s cooking.

Ultimately, after much deliberation, I decided to go with colors that I wear more often, and designs that were just more “me”. Mum bought me a bag with a second “flap” so now I have two new bags!

Pierangelo Masciadri and Christina Conte

Here is Mum with Pierangelo and his daughter, who also works with him (as does his other daughter). If you’re interested in Pierangelo’s bags, ties, scarves or shoes, you can see more and even order them online. Thanks, Mum! I love my bag(s) from Arte e Moda !

Pierangelo's shop in Bellagio

Reluctantly, we checked out of the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni. I could easily have stayed for a month–wait, what am I saying? Months on end is more like it. I didn’t even mention that there is a spa, gym and tennis courts at the hotel.

Our rental car at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

If you ever get the opportunity, or make plans to go to Northern Italy, or anywhere nearby, I highly recommend the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni. Even though the GHVS is a 5 star hotel, I believe it is more reasonable than many other 5 star hotels in the US, especially given its top location. You can even just go for a beautiful lunch or dinner.

Please visit the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni for more photos, facts or to make a reservation.

Lake Como is not too far from Milan , and for this reason it has been a top holiday destination for wealthy Milanese families for several centuries, explaining the abundance of stunning lakeside villas with manicured Italian-style gardens.

Some of these Lake Como villas are now on Airbnb and can be yours for the night (if you have deep pockets, that is). Some others are wedding venues, and others again house 5-star hotels , or can be rented as event locations.

There are 9 villas around the lake you can visit. 5 of these Lake Como villas allow visitors to tour the interiors and gardens, whereas others are privately owned and only allow access to the garden.

Not all villas are open year-round – many only open during the spring/summer season or only on certain days of the week. We’ve included all this info on the relevant paragraphs, including how to get there.

We’ve divided the best Lake Como villas in two groups – villas you can visit from Como, and villas in the central part of the lake, easy to visit from Bellagio or Varenna. Let’s discover them together!

Best Lake Como Villas near Como

1) villa olmo.

villa olmo como

Villa Olmo in Como is a great example of neoclassical architecture from the early 1800s. It’s located right on the lakeside on the way to Cernobbio, and it’s easy to walk there from the center of Como.

Marquis Innocenzo Odescalchi originally commissioned the villa as a lakeside summer retreat. The villa is named after a monumental elm tree ( olmo in Italian) located in the gardens, which unfortunately did not survive to the present day.

Villa Olmo had several important visitors over the centuries , including Napoleon and Garibaldi. It also changed hands many times, until it was acquired by the Municipality of Como. Since 1925, it has primarily been used for cultural events, conferences, and art exhibitions.

The villa consists of separate buildings spread across the large English gardens. The interiors are in exquisite Neoclassical style, decorated with frescoes by local artists Andrea Appiani and Domenico Pozzi. Another interesting feature is the tiny Italian-style theatre with perfect acoustics. The façade of the villa is also very elegant, with a colonnade surrounding the busts of five ancient philosophers set in round niches.

The extensive English-style garden is actually a public park , and it houses elaborate statues, fountains, colorful flowerbeds, and elegant greenery, making it one of the most beautiful places to walk around on the shores of Lake Como.

The legendary ‘olmo’ lending its name to the villa may be long gone, but the gardens have over 700 trees, including some monumental ones – including a Lebanon cedar, horse chestnut, and even a sequoia.

How to get there – Walk along Passeggiata Lino Gelpi from the Como Yacht Club, going past some of the most beautiful (privately owned) lakeside villas. It’s a really scenic walk and it takes less then half an hour to reach Villa Olmo.

Opening times – Villa Olmo is currently under restoration, but the gardens are open every day (except Monday) from 10 AM to 6 PM. Entry is free.

2) Villa d’Este

The Renaissance Villa d’Este is located in Cernobbio and was built in the mid-1500s as a patrician residence. It was built on the site of a former nunnery and originally named Villa del Garovo, after a stream located in the vicinity.

The villa was bought and sold several times – the most notable owners were the Calderari family, who restored the villa in the 18th century adding an Italian-style garden complete with a small temple fronted by a statue of Hercules, and Princess Carolina of Brunswick , who turned the garden into English-style.

Princess Carolina belonged to the noble Este family – to honour the new owner, the villa name became ‘Nuova Villa d’Este’ , to distinguish it from the well-known Villa d’Este in Tivoli, near Rome.

In the late 19th century the villa became a hotel, a favourite haunt of the rich and famous from half of Europe. It was used by Alfred Hitchcock ad a filming location for his 1925 silent movie Pleasure Garden , and 20 years later the villa became the location of a real-life murder , when a countess killed her lover and hid the smoking gun in her ermine scarf (yes, I’m not joking!)

Villa d’Este is definitely one of the most impressive villas on Lake Como , and it still functions as an exclusive 5-star hotel that is only open to guests. So if you want to visit Villa d’Este, you must book a room at the hotel – but then you have opened a gate to ultimate luxury.

You’ll be able to walk in the footsteps of sultans, tsars, and princesses as you traverse the opulent hallways of the hotel. The gardens are unmatched as are the lake views , making a stay there a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

If your budget can’t quite stretch to spending €1000 or more per night, you can book dinner in one of 4 restaurants located in the hotel , or visit in occasion of Concorso d’Eleganza , a vintage car show taking place every year in the hotel grounds.

How to get there – Villa d’Este is about 10 minutes walk from the center of Cernobbio, but if you’re staying there you probably have enough money for a taxi or private boat transfer from Como.

3) Villa Erba

Villa Erba is located in Cernobbio and dates back to the 19th century. It was built in Mannerist style on the site of a former monastery, that was decommissioned during Napoleon’s rule.

The villa is only open during special events like art exhibitions and fairs , but you can also rent it for weddings, conferences, and other events. Inside the palace, you will be met by lavish stairs covered in a red carpet to match the intricate details in the ceiling and massive paintings on the walls.

You can also visit during Concorso d’Eleganza , the vintage car show held at nearby Villa d’Este. Part of the exhibition can be found at Villa Erba.

The gardens and main villa are taken straight out of a fairytale with greenery draped down the walls, an elegant portico, and statues by Mazzucchelli guarding the property. The elaborate gardens are nothing short of spectacular with exotic trees and a myriad of different plant species.

You might recognize Villa Erba from Gwen Stefani’s music video of her single “Cool” or scenes from the movie Ocean’s Twelve.

How to get there – Villa d’Este is walking distance from the center of Cernobbio, about 10 minutes drive from the Como lakeside.

4) Villa Bernasconi

Villa_Bernasconi_a_Cernobbio_14

Villa Bernasconi in Cernobbio was commissioned by Davide Bernasconi, a wealthy textile manufacturer who was important for the city’s development in the early 1900s. It is one of the most remarkable Art Nouveau-style structures in Italy , and the only Art Nouveau villa in Lake Como.

On the facade, you can admire different artistic features depicting the silk production process , like butterflies, silkworms, and mulberry leaves. Inside, you can walk through the house museum while learning about the people who lived there.

Silk was a huge industry in Lake Como at the turn of the 20th century, and there are still about 100 silk manufacturers in the Como area.

The Cernobbio municipality took over Villa Bernasconi in 1989, restored it, and now it hosts different exhibitions and conferences. It is mandatory to book visits in advance – if you’re curious, there’s also a free virtual tour online.

How to get there – The villa is in the center of Cernobbio on the way to Como, about 10 minutes drive from the Como lakeside.

Opening times – Villa Bernasconi is open from Friday to Monday, from 10 AM to 6 PM. Entry is €8, or €7 if you are leaving your car in a paid parking lot in Cernobbio.

Best Lake Como Villas near Bellagio/Varenna

5) villa monastero.

villa monastero varenna

If you only have time to visit one villa in Lake Como, this should be the one! It’s one of the few that is open for most of the year (March-Nov), it can be visited both inside and outside, and it’s in Varenna, one of the most beautiful Lake Como towns , also easy to reach from Milan by train.

Villa Monastero was formerly a 12th-century monastery for Cistercian nuns in Varenna, thus the name meaning “Monastery Villa”. The villa was acquired by the Mornico family in the 17th century who renovated the main villa, and further works were undertaken two centuries later by the German owner, Walter Eich Jakob Kees, who extended the gardens and decorated the building in an eclectic style.

Nowadays, the villa itself has been turned into a house museum , where you can witness 8 centuries of history through decorated rooms and halls. 14 rooms are open for visits, including the Sala Fermi , where renowned physicist Enrico Fermi held classes in 1954, and Sala Polvani , with a small exhibition of scientific instruments.

But most of all, Villa Monastero is renowned for its bewildering terraced botanical gardens. Set on the lakefront, they offer walks through labyrinthine paths to imposing statues, porticos, and fountains, and serene walkways along the shore.

To top it all, the botanical garden is an explosion of colors where unique plant species from all across the world coexist with local plants from the Lombardy region.

How to get there – The villa is 10 minutes walk from the center of Varenna, and 15 minutes from Esino-Varenna station.

Opening times – to enter Villa Monastero you can opt for two different tickets, for the botanical gardens only (€10) and for the gardens and villa (€13).

The villa and gardens are open from March to November and opening times vary throughout the year – for example, in March it’s open from 10 AM to 5 PM, and in June, July and August from 9 AM to 8 PM. Check the Villa Monastero website for more exact information.

6) Gardens of Villa Serbelloni

The 15th-century Villa Serbelloni is located on the lakefront in the enchanting town of Bellagio. It should not be mixed up with Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni , a 5-star hotel located nearby in another stunning Lake Como Villa, which is only open for visitors.

Villa Serbelloni changed owners numerous times before it eventually came into the hands of the Serbelloni Dukes in the late 18th century.

They developed the property drastically and built sumptuous gardens with sweeping lake views that were eventually donated to the Rockefeller Foundation. Throughout its history, the villa welcomed several famous guests, including Leonardo Da Vinci, Queen Victoria, writer Alessandro Manzoni and many more.

The gardens extend for over 50 acres on a promontory with scenic views over Bellagio and the lake. Due to the lake’s microclimate, the garden houses rare and exotic plants, and there are 18 km of pathways to explore.

Today, the villa hosts artists and scholars from all over the world visiting for residencies. It cannot be visited inside. However, the gardens are open to the public , and visiting them is definitely one of the best things to do in Bellagio!

How to get there – The villa is only a short walk from the center of Bellagio, which can be reached by ferry from Como, Varenna and other Lake Como towns.

Opening times – The Gardens of Villa Serbelloni are only open from March to November and can be accessed with a guided tour, held every day (except Monday) at 11 AM and 3.30 PM. Make sure you book your tickets in advance , especially in summer.

7) Gardens of Villa Melzi

Villa Melzi was built in the early 19th century as a summer house for Francesco Melzi d’Eril in Bellagio. The villa was built by Swiss architect Giacomo Albertolli – like many other Lake Como villas, it welcomed famous people including Stendhal and composer Franz Liszt.

The Villa Melzi complex includes the villa, a chapel, the gardens, an Orangerie (housing a small museum with relics from Napoleon times), a Moorish pavilion, and a pineta (pine tree grove).

Since it is a private residence even today, the Neoclassical noble villa is not open to the public , but its magnificent botanical garden is. Boasting a euphoria of perfectly groomed exotic plants and colorful flowers, it is a joy to the eye and one of Lake Como’s must-visit gardens.

Walk along the lakefront promenade, take in the beautiful ponds, Egyptian sculptures, and Roman statues, and explore the Japanese garden. Included in the visit is a small chapel and a museum where you can explore old artifacts and learn more about the villa’s history.

How to get there – The villa is 15 minutes walk from the center of Bellagio.

Opening times – Villa Melzi is open to the public from March 25th to October 15th, from 10 AM to 7 PM. Tickets cost €10 and include access to the garden, chapel, and Orangerie.

8) Villa Carlotta

villa carlotta tremezzina

Villa Carlotta is situated in Tremezzo and dates back to the 17th century. It was originally known as Villa Clerici after its first owner, Marquis Giorgio Clerici. In the 18th century, it was sold to Giovanni Battista Sommariva, an art enthusiast who decorated the villa and gardens with exquisite art pieces.

Sommariva was an avid art collector, and it’s thanks to him that Villa Carlotta is now filled with countless artworks. Some of the best examples include sculptures by Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorvaldsen , and the manifesto of Romantic painting – The Last Kiss of Romeo and Juliet , by Francesco Hayez.

However, the name of Villa Carlotta came later when Princess Marianne of Nassau bought the palace and gifted it to her daughter Carlotta.

Carlotta’s husband, George II of Saxe-Meiningen, was passionate about plants – together with his son Bernard, he extended the gardens and planted many of the azaleas and rhododendrons the villa is known for nowadays.

Villa Carlotta is worth visiting both inside and outside. The extensive gardens are terraced and a variety of warm-climate plants can be found – besides over 150 species of azaleas and rhododendrons, Southern ferns, palms, citrus trees, camellia bushes and even a bamboo grove.

How to get there – The villa is located in Tremezzo, about 45 mins/1 hour’s drive from Como (depending on traffic). You can also get there by ferry from both Bellagio and Como.

Opening times – Villa Carlotta is open from late March to early November, every day from 10 AM to 7 PM. In winter you can also visit with prior booking, email [email protected] for info. Entrance tickets are €15 and allow access to the villa and gardens. Book your tickets here!

9) Villa Balbianello

villa balbianello lenno

Last but not least, Villa Balbianello! My favourite Lake Como villa and definitely a destination you shouldn’t miss, even though it’s very very touristy!

Villa Balbianello is an 18th-century villa located a 20-minute walk up the hill from Lenno. The villa offers unmatched views of Lake Como , set on a promontory and surrounded by water on three sides. However, the villa is mostly famous for being the filming location of several Hollywood movies. And the picturesque setting might be just the reason why directors of big-name films like James Bond and Star Wars chose this exact villa.

The splendid gardens were where the scenes of James Bond healing after his injury in Casino Royale took place. And if you remember the scene where Anakin kisses Padme in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones , you are looking at the balcony of Villa Balbianello.

Besides the gardens and porticos, make sure you book a guided tour of the palace’s interior. Villa Balbianello holds a great collection of artwork like paintings and sculptures, as well as English and French furniture dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries.

The last owner of the villa was Guido Monzino , a count and adventurer who travelled India and the Himalaya region extensively, and was also part of Italy’s expeditions to reach the summit of Everest and the North Pole.

The upper levels of the villa are filled with memorabilia from Monzino’s life, including the sleighs he used to reach the Pole, mountaineering equipment, prayer flags and other objects. Monzino died without heirs and donated the villa to FAI – Fondo dell’Ambiente Italiano , an association dedicated to preserving Italy’s cultural heritage.

How to get there – The villa is located in Lenno, about 30 km drive from Como, but car access to the villa is not possible. You can park your car and either walk there from the centre of Lenno (about 25 minutes) or use the boat shuttle service. You’ll find several boats on the Lenno lakeside.

Opening times – The villa is open from March to January, every day except Monday and Wednesday. You can book two kinds of tickets – to the villa and gardens, including a guided tour of the villa interiors (€24) and just the gardens (self-guided, €13). Whatever you decide, make sure you book your tickets way in advance!

The best time is definitely spring , especially if you’re planning to visit any of the gardens. In spring you’ll see all the flowers in bloom, otherwise you can opt for early autumn (up to mid-October) when most villas are still open and the autumn colours start to show.

Are there any Lake Como villas where you can stay?

Villa del Balbianello is located on the tip of a small peninsula on Lake Como, and due to its somewhat remote location, it’s a bit tricky to reach.

The closest ferry station is Lenno, so if you plan to arrive by ferry, this is the one to head to. If you’re taking a car, there’s a small parking lot right next to the start of the pathway to the villa.

It fills up really quickly though, so I would only recommend using a car if you can arrive really early, otherwise, you are better off with the ferry.

There are no public roads leading up to the villa, so whether you arrive by ferry or car, you’ll have to either follow the pathway that leads up to the villa or take a taxi boat service.

The taxi boat is definitely the easiest way to get to Villa del Balbianello. It’s only an 8-minute walk from the ferry port, and the taxi boats leave every 20 minutes. The boat can only fit 10-12 people at a time, so you might have to wait in line if you plan to take it during the day.

If you don’t want to pay for the boat and are up for a little workout, follow the pathway to the villa. It’s an uphill climb, but it’s not too strenuous, and in 20-25 minutes, you will arrive at the villa.

Best Time to Visit

To make the most of your visit to Villa del Balbianello, consider planning your trip during the spring or autumn months. The mild weather and fewer crowds allow for a more intimate experience.

Keep in mind that the villa can be quite popular during peak tourist season, so arriving early in the day or later in the afternoon can help you beat the crowds and enjoy a more serene ambiance.

I recommend choosing the earliest ticket possible and taking the first taxi boat in the morning to beat the crowds.

2. Villa Carlotta

villa serbelloni tour

  • Location:   Via Regina, 2, 22016 Tremezzina CO, Italy
  • Opening Times:  Open daily from March to November, 10 am to 7 pm. The last entry is 6 pm, the museum closes at 6.30 pm.
  • Entrance Fee:  €15 for adults, €6 for children aged 6-18, free for children under 6 years old.
  • Website:   https://www.villacarlotta.it/

Located on the shores of Lake Como in Tremezzina, Villa Carlotta is another one of the most beautiful Lake Como villas you can’t miss.

Villa Carlotta holds a rich history that dates back centuries. Originally built in the late 17th century by a Milanese marquis, the villa changed hands several times over the years.

It wasn’t until 1843, when Princess Marianne of Nassau, the wife of Prince Albert of Prussia, acquired the property that it received its current name in honor of her daughter Carlotta.

The princess, an ardent lover of art and botany, transformed the villa and its gardens into a haven of beauty and cultural significance. Over the years, Villa Carlotta continued to evolve and was filled with various works of art and exotic plants.

villa serbelloni tour

Today, Villa Carlotta stands as a testament to its rich heritage, preserving its architectural grandeur and hosting an exceptional art collection. The villa and its gardens have quickly become one of the best places to visit in Lake Como.

Unlike other Lake Como villas, the interior of Villa Carlotta is open to the public, and it’s already included in your entrance ticket. Inside, you can step into the imaginative world of this 18th-century villa and admire its exquisite frescoes, period furniture, and antiques.

The gardens around Villa Carlotta are just as impressive. Overlooked by a majestic mountain backdrop, the gardens are brimming with lush vegetation, vibrant flowerbeds, and beautiful sculptures.

You might not think at first, but the gardens are huge so wear comfortable shoes if you want to explore. It takes 90 minutes to complete the whole tour of the gardens but there is also a shorter itinerary that takes 45 minutes.

villa serbelloni tour

Villa Carlotta is one of the easiest luxury villas in Lake Como to reach. There’s a ferry port located right in front of the villa so if you’re traveling by ferry, you’ll be dropped off right at the entrance.

If you’re taking a car, you can find free and paid parking options near Villa Carlotta. However, these fill up quickly during the busy tourist season so it’s best to arrive early.

To witness the gardens of Villa Carlotta in their full glory, plan your visit during the spring and summer months. The blooming season paints the gardens with vibrant hues, filling the air with fragrant scents.

Keep in mind that Villa Carlotta can attract a significant number of visitors, especially during the peak tourist season. Arriving early in the morning or opting for a late afternoon visit can offer a more serene and intimate experience.

3. Villa Monastero

villa serbelloni tour

  • Location:   Viale Giovanni Polvani, 4, 23829 Varenna LC, Italy
  • Opening Times:  Depending on the month, the villa has different opening times, so it’s best to  check their website  for the current opening hours. As a guideline, both the museum and the gardens are open daily, from 9.30 am to 8 pm, during the summer months.
  • Entrance Fee:  Entrance to the garden only costs €10 for adults, €5 for young people aged 15-25, and free for children under 15. The combined entrance to the garden and the museum is €13 for adults, €9 for young people aged 15-25, and free for children under 15 years old.
  • Website:   https://www.villamonastero.eu/en/

Varenna is one of the cutest towns in Lake Como , and if this wouldn’t be enough, it’s also home to two of the most stunning Lake Como villas.

One of them is Villa Monastero, which started as a Cistercian convent way back in the 12th century. It has transformed over the years into a private residence that now showcases its rich monastic past alongside its elegant architectural styles.

Similar to Villa Balbianello, you have the option to visit the gardens only, or the gardens and museum. I would 100% recommend choosing the combined ticket as the interior of the villa is fantastic.

You can find 14 rooms inside, each containing original decorations and furniture. From the gorgeous Sala della Musica to the intimate chambers and bathrooms, the villa’s interior immerses you in a world of refined elegance and captivating history.

villa serbelloni tour

The garden of Villa Monastero is absolutely beautiful too, and there’s plenty to see and explore. The park stretches almost two kilometers long, from Varenna to Fiumelatte.

This means that you can take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the breathtaking views of Lake Como while you explore nature’s wonders.

You will also come across many architectural decorations, such as small temples, fountains, and plenty of sculptures. Make sure to leave yourself enough time to get lost in the beauty of these gardens.

villa serbelloni tour

Varenna is very well connected to the other towns of Lake Como, and it also has a direct train connection to Milan, making it very easy to get to the villa.

Whether you’re planning to arrive by ferry or train, you’ll be looking at a 10-15 minute leisurely walk. If you are coming with a car, you can find a huge parking garage right across the street from

Villa Monastero.

Villa Monastero is a year-round delight, each season offering its own special charm. Spring blooms bring a burst of color, while summer unveils the full glory of the gardens. Autumn paints the landscape with warm hues, and even in December, Villa Monastero has its own unique appeal.

If you want to escape the crowds, try to arrive around the opening time. But thanks to the size of the garden, it never really feels overcrowded, so you can basically visit anytime.

4. Villa Cipressi

villa serbelloni tour

  • Location:   Contrada del Duca, 1, 23829 Varenna LC, Italy
  • Opening Times:  Similar to Villa Monastero, Villa Cipressi also has different opening times depending on the month. For the summer months, it’s open from 9 am to 8 pm, daily.
  • Entrance Fee:  €10 for adults, €5 for young people aged 15-25, and free for children under 14 years old.
  • Website:   https://www.grandigiardini.it/lang_EN/259-visit-Villa-Cipressi-event-tickets

The second villa you can visit in Varenna is Villa Cipressi. Although it’s smaller than Villa Monastero, it absolutely deserves to be on the list of the most beautiful villas in Lake Como.

Villa Cipressi is comprised of a collection of buildings dating from the 14th to 19th centuries. Throughout the ages, it has served different purposes, but now it functions as a hotel, managed by R Collection Hotels.

If you’re looking for the  best Lake Como hotels with lake views , you can consider booking a stay at this fantastic hotel!

Characterized by a variety of botanical species and ancient trees, the gardens of Villa Cipressi are a kaleidoscope of colors, fragrances, and tranquility, sloping down towards the serene waters of Lake Como.

A series of terraces, connected by paths and stairs, provides visitors with panoramic viewpoints perfectly framed by lush vegetation.

Though the villa’s interiors are reserved for hotel guests, the gardens are open to the public, making it a must-visit for any  Lake Como itinerary .

Walking through Villa Cipressi’s gardens feels like a journey through time. The historic cypress trees, exotic plants, and blooming flowers create an ambiance that reflects the villa’s long history. Ancient stone arches, fountains, and sculptures add to the garden’s allure, turning each step into a discovery.

Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen, as you will be walking up and down on the terraced gardens.

villa serbelloni tour

Villa Cipressi is conveniently situated within a short walk from Varenna’s town center. The town itself is well connected by ferry to other Lake Como hotspots, making Villa Cipressi easy to reach.

If you’re driving, you can find a parking garage located close to Villa Cipressi, and it’s just a few minutes walk from there.

The gardens of Villa Cipressi are spectacular throughout the year, however, they are at their best during the spring months.

If you happen to be visiting at the end of April when the wisteria is in full bloom, you will be rewarded with a garden full of color and enchanting scents.

Early morning or late afternoon visits will help you avoid the crowds and enjoy the tranquillity of this magnificent site, but it doesn’t get as busy as the other villas of Lake Como so you can pretty much visit anytime.

5. Villa Melzi

villa serbelloni tour

  • Location:   Via Lungo Lario Manzoni, 22021 Bellagio CO, Italy
  • Opening Times:  Open daily from 10 am to 7 pm (last entrance at 6.30 pm)
  • Entrance Fee:  €8 for adults, free for children under 11 years old.
  • Website:   https://giardinidivillamelzi.it/en/home-eng/

In the charming town of Bellagio, where the three branches of Lake Como meet, you’ll find Villa Melzi, a neoclassical marvel designed by the famed architect Giocondo Albertolli.

Constructed between 1808 and 1810 for Francesco Melzi d’Eril, a vice president of the Italian Republic under Napoleon, this villa exudes elegance and historical significance.

The villa is a remarkable specimen of neoclassical aesthetics, adorned with sculptures, Egyptian and Etruscan artifacts, and a small museum featuring an array of Napoleonic memorabilia.

Though the villa itself is private and not open for visits, its exquisite gardens and the small museum are open to the public.

The sprawling, English-style gardens enveloping Villa Melzi are a sight to behold. These meticulously maintained grounds provide a perfect blend of art and nature, characterized by exotic trees, vibrant rhododendrons, and classical statues.

The highlight of the garden is the enchanting Japanese pond, creating a soothing atmosphere with its water lilies and charming bridge. You can even find a hidden cave near the pond!

The lakeside path in the garden offers stunning panoramic views of the lake, with cute little benches strategically placed to sit and soak in the mesmerizing beauty of Lake Como.

This makes Villa Melzi one of the best luxury villas on Lake Como to visit if you’re looking for stunning lakeside views.

villa serbelloni tour

Located on the outskirts of Bellagio, reaching Villa Melzi is a pleasant walk from the town’s center. You have to walk through the lakefront promenade from the center which is a sight to behold in itself!

If you’re arriving by ferry, it’s about a 15-minute walk from the Bellagio ferry port along the lakeside. For those of you who prefer to drive, there is public parking available close to the villa, although it can get quite crowded during peak season.

Visiting Villa Melzi is a blast, regardless of the season. It doesn’t get as busy as the likes of Villa del Balbianello or Villa Carlotta, so you can plan your visit anytime.

Personally, I prefer visiting in the afternoon, when the gardens are no longer in the shade, and the sun brings out the vibrant colors of this majestic place.

6. Villa Serbelloni Garden

villa serbelloni tour

  • Location:   Piazza della Chiesa, 14, 22021 Bellagio CO, Italy
  • Opening Times:  Open daily from April to October, except Mondays. The gardens can only be visited on a guided tour twice a day, which runs at 11 am and 3.30 pm.
  • Entrance Fee:  €10 for adults, €5 for children aged 7-13, free for children under 6 years old.
  • Website:   https://www.bellagiolakecomo.com/en/bellagio-lake-como-italy/poi-points-of-interest/villa-serbelloni-garden

Perched atop the hill of Bellagio, Villa Serbelloni is a destination that stands as a testament to the opulence of the Italian Renaissance. This magnificent Lake Como villa dates back to the 15th century, though, over the centuries, it underwent numerous transformations.

Today, owned by the Rockefeller Foundation, it serves as a retreat for artists, scholars, and scientists from around the world.

Make sure not to confuse Villa Serbelloni with Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, as they are two separate properties. They were once owned by the same family, but now they are two completely different entities, and only a similar name remains.

While the villa itself is not open to the public, you have the opportunity to explore Villa Serbelloni’s extensive grounds through a guided tour. The tours run twice a day, at 11 am and 3.30 pm, and last for around 2 hours.

Prior reservation is mandatory for the tour, and it’s worth booking at least a few days in advance because each tour is limited to a maximum of 30 people.

The park, one of the largest in the Lake Como area, offers some of the most stunning panoramic views across the lake. The 18th-century English garden is a verdant maze of paths meandering through a diverse collection of plants, trees, and flowers.

The gardens stretch all the way up to the top of the hill, offering a bird’s eye view of the lake and its surroundings. While the view is absolutely fantastic, it requires a bit of a climb to get there, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

villa serbelloni tour

Villa Serbelloni is easily accessible from the center of Bellagio. It’s just a short, albeit uphill, walk from the town center.

As you can’t enter the property without a guide, you will need to wait at the meeting point, which is located near the entrance of Villa Serbelloni’s park, right next to the town’s main square.

If you’re traveling by ferry, it’s approximately a 10-minute walk from the Bellagio ferry port. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the ferry port, from where you can walk to the villa on the same route.

As the tours only run twice per day, you don’t have that many options. To be honest, it doesn’t really matter which tour you choose as both time slots offer beautiful views of the lake. So just choose the one that fits your Lake Como itinerary best!

7. Villa Olmo

villa serbelloni tour

  • Location:   Via Simone Cantoni, 1, 22100 Como CO, Italy
  • Opening Times:  Open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm (last entry 5.30 pm)
  • Entrance Fee:  Free to visit.
  • Website:   https://www.villaolmocomo.it/

One of the most renowned villas in Lake Como, Villa Olmo is an emblem of grandeur and architectural finesse. This majestic neoclassical estate is located in Como City itself, offering a blend of urban convenience and serene lake views.

Designed by Simone Cantoni in the late 18th century, Villa Olmo was home to many distinguished European aristocrats. Over the years, it has hosted a number of illustrious guests, including Napoleon Bonaparte and Ugo Foscolo, further adding to its historical charm.

Unlike many Lake Como villas, the inside of Villa Olmo is open to the public and frequently hosts art exhibitions and cultural events. Its high-ceilinged rooms, adorned with stunning frescoes and elegant chandeliers, are a treasure trove of neoclassical design.

The villa is surrounded by an extensive English-style park, which is free to visit. The park, marked by a splendid double row of plane trees, offers stunning views over Lake Como and features monuments, fountains, and a greenhouse.

Whether you’re a lover of history, art, or simply beautiful vistas, Villa Olmo stands out among the villas in Lake Como, offering a memorable experience for all visitors.

villa serbelloni tour

As Villa Olmo is located in Como city, it’s reachable on foot if you’re staying in the city center. It’s a 20-25 minute walk from the train station on a lovely path along the lake.

During the walk, you will also pass by the Aero Club so you can get an up-close view of the hydroplanes that usually take off from there.

If you don’t want to walk, there’s also a convenient bus service that runs between the town center and the villa. For those arriving by car, there’s a paid car park near the villa.

Alternatively, if you’re coming from other parts of Lake Como, you can take a ferry to the Como ferry terminal and then a short bus ride or walk to the villa.

Villa Olmo and its park can be visited throughout the year. The park is particularly beautiful during spring and fall when the trees are either in bloom or displaying vibrant fall colors.

This is one of the most underrated Lake Como villas, so it doesn’t get as busy as the other, most famous ones. In general, it’s best to visit during weekdays when the crowds are usually smaller, but basically, you can go anytime.

Where to Stay in Lake Como

The shores of Lake Como are dotted with small towns, each with its own unique charm and atmosphere. From luxury resorts to family-run guesthouses, there’s something for everyone.

It can be hard to know which villas to visit in Lake Como, especially if you only have a few days here. In this blog post, I will highlight some of the must visit villas in Lake Como, so you can make the most of your time here!

Overview of the Must Visit Villas in Lake Como

1) villa del balbianello – famous villa on lake como.

Villa del Balbianello is the most famous villa on Lake Como and for good reason! It is a stunning villa known for its lush gardens and panoramic views. Explore the meticulously maintained terraced gardens overlooking the lake and take a guided tour of the opulent interiors, adorned with historical artifacts and beautiful frescoes.

It’s the most famous villa on Lake Como, not just for it’s beauty but it was the filming location for several movies, including ‘Star Wars: Attack of the Clones’ and James Bond’s ‘Casino Royale’. If you only have time to see one villa then this is definitely THE must visit villa in Lake Como.

The villa is located near Lenno on the west coast of Lake Como. You can easily get a boat here from Bellagio as well as the bus from Tremezzo and Menaggio. I decided to spend the night in Lenno at the Hotel Plinio which had very affordable rooms with a lake view from just €80 a night, and less than a 20 minute walk to the villa.

Best time to visit Villa Del Balbianello

The Villa del Balbianello is one of the top things to do in Lake Como, however it’s closed on Mondays and Wednesdays so make sure to plan your trip around this! I recommend visiting either for opening at 10am or just before closing. The villa has limited opening days between December and February, so the best time to visit is March to October.

Tickets: €23 Villa and gardens €12 Gardens

2) Villa Carlotta

Situated in the town of Tremezzo, Villa Carlotta is a majestic mansion surrounded by a vast botanical garden. This neoclassical villa houses an impressive art collection, including sculptures by Antonio Canova and paintings by Francesco Hayez. As well as beautiful arched windows which make for a very instagrammable photo spot on Lake Como. Make sure to also wander through the perfectly manicured gardens, annd enjoy the captivating views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

The villa is just down the road from Villa del Balbianello so you can easily visit both on the same day. If you are hoping to visit a few villas in one day you might want to book a tour which includes the ferries too .

Make sure to also visit the nearby Grand Hotel Tremezzo , where you can enjoy lunch or a drink in one of their many restaurants (even if you’re not a guest).

Tickets: €11 full price

3) Villa Monastero – Villa in Varenna

If you’re going to visit one villa in Varenna make sure it’s Villa Monastero . A magnificent villa that showcases the perfect blend of nature and architecture. Originally a Cistercian convent, the villa boasts beautiful terraced gardens, adorned with colourful flowers, ancient trees, and panoramic views of the lake. Wander through the picturesque pathways and explore the opulent interiors, which house a fascinating collection of art and historical artifacts.

I recommend booking your tickets online in advance to avoid the queue.

Tickets: €13.52 Villa and Gardens €10.40 Gardens

Stroll through the enchanting terraced gardens and discover hidden nooks, charming fountains, and breathtaking lake views. The villa itself is now a hotel dating back to the 14th century and features elegantly decorated rooms and suites, so you can even book a stay at the Hotel Villa Cipressi !

If you are visiting Lake Como at the end of March or April you might be in Varenna in time to see the wisteria in bloom, in which case you definitely want to add this villa to your itinerary. It has the most incredible wisteria wall surrounding the iconic gate on the lake, making for one of the most instagrammable photo spots in Lake Como.

The villa is next door to Villa Monastero so it’s easy to visit both on the same day. You can even buy a combination entry ticket to save money. However the Villa is sometimes booked for private events so make sure to check what days these are so you can plan your visit accordingly.

Tickets: €10 Gardens

5) Villa Melzi d’Eril – Villa in Bellagio

A visit to Bellagio wouldn’t be complete without exploring the elegant Villa Melzi d’Eril . This neoclassical villa is surrounded by stunning gardens and offers captivating views of Lake Como. Take a leisurely stroll through the expansive park, adorned with statues, exotic plants, and colourful flowers. The villa’s interiors are equally impressive, featuring beautiful frescoes, art collections, and historical artifacts. I recommend visiting around midday or early afternoon for the best light.

If you are just spending one day in Lake Como then you book a combination ticket for entry to the three villas as well as a day ferry ticket.
