Check out Greenwich Hall with the full stunning surfaces right here.

3. Natural History Museum

virtual tour natural history museum london

The Natural History Museum was one of the first London museums to close its doors , before all the others were ordered to follow suit. But, if Ben Stiller taught us anything, it’s that life lives on in museums regardless of human movement inside. The dinosaurs, the blue whales and the scary skulls are all on hand to provide us with a cracking virtual display. The museum’s website gives a host of options on ways to interact with all things natural and historic. The pick of the bunch, however, has to be a guided interactive tour of Hintze Hall led by none other than Sir David Attenborough .

Check out the vast array of museum tour opportunities right here.

4. Yayoi Kusama’s world-renowned Infinity Rooms, which were due to hit the Tate Modern

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by The Broad (@thebroadmuseum) on Apr 1, 2020 at 7:12pm PDT

Yayoi Kusama’s spectacular Infinity Rooms have gripped the public as they make their way to different stops around the globe. Kusama’s Infinity Rooms are chambers just big enough for three people, filled with stunning beams of light for a unique, individual experience. They were due to hit the Tate Modern on 11 May , but sadly have been halted due to COVID-19. Never fear, Instagram is here. The Broad Museum has provided an interactive view of Kusama’s room via the app , which aims to transport you from your sofa to the radiant glow of infinity.

5. Jack The Ripper walking tour

virtual tour natural history museum london

Take yourself out to the spooky spots that Jack The Ripper once roamed through… all from the safety of your own home. In this thrilling tour, you’ll learn about London’s most notorious serial killer, his victims and even investigate other alleged perpetrators. It’s the most detailed and all-consuming virtual tour you can experience from lockdown.

Find out more about the spooky tour and grab your tickets right here.

6. The Postal Museum

virtual tour natural history museum london

As the magic of the  Postal Museum  remains behind closed doors due to the coronavirus, virtual visitors are able to hop on board the museum’s star attraction: the famous Mail Rail. “Passengers” on the virtual tour will explore the hidden subterranean world of the 100-year-old Post Office Railway, chugging its way through the original tunnels.

Read all about it and get involved here.

7. The National Gallery

The National Gallery provides detailed virtual tours of their different wings. See everything from early renaissance paintings, to 360-degree views of Holstein and Titian. It’s a world to get lost in and immerse yourself in the best art the capital has to offer.

Check out the virtual tours of The National Gallery on offer here.

8. The London Transport Museum

If you’ve got time to kill, this is an excellent, detailed walking tour of the London Transport Museum. As it was filmed this time last year, the crowds in the museum might make you pine for the days where you could join them. It’s a great way to get to grips with London’s historic travel company.

9. Houses of Parliament

virtual tour natural history museum london

While they’re normally bellowing away here, even the MPs are mostly working from home. No matter how you feel they’re handling this ongoing crisis, it doesn’t mean you can’t get a feel for the historic buildings they normally grace. This 360-degree virtual tour lets you wander through the Commons, the Lords and the lobbies, halls and galleries that make up the Houses Of Parliament.

Check out the Houses Of Parliament virtual tour here.

10. Buckingham Palace State Tour Rooms

virtual tour natural history museum london

As it’s the Queen’s birthday this week (April 21), it would be remiss of us not to let you know about the Buckingham Palace virtual tours . Check out the majestic throne room, the grand staircase, the drawing-room and much more. Truly the most royal you can feel at a time like this.

Check out the Buckingham Palace State Room tours right here.

11.  Courtauld Gallery

The Courtauld Gallery has past experience in getting this kind of thing to work. It closed its doors temporarily in September 2018, and offered viewers a virtual tour. This has, of course, come in handy for the current situation. Anyone can gawk at the beautiful work of Manet, Van Gogh and plenty more with a virtual display of every single room.

Check out the full Courtauld Gallery tour right here.

12.  Saatchi Gallery’s ‘Tutanhkamun: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh‘ exhibit

The Tutankhamun exhibit was one of the hottest tickets in town prior to lockdown—and one of the final chances to see the artefacts before their permanent move to Cairo’s Grand Egyptian Museum—so news of the online tour is welcome indeed. The gallery invites you to “Enter The Tomb” where you’re able to check out prized artefacts such as vases, coffinettes, and statues.

13. Andy Warhol at Tate Modern

Mainly down to the brilliant weather that London has so typically experienced as soon as everyone got forced inside, this is one that hurts a lot. A day out on the sunny Southbank topped off by cooling down at this Andy Warhol exhibition sounds like complete heaven. Nonetheless, the Tate Modern has ensured that we don’t completely miss out. A full video of the excellent Andy Warhol exhibition can be found online, along with a detailed commentary that explores the exhibition room by room.

14.  NOW Gallery’s “Slices Of Time” installation

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by emmanuelle moureaux (@emmanuellemoureaux) on Feb 3, 2020 at 2:50pm PST

Before the forced closures, NOW Gallery housed Emmanuele Moureaux’s first large-scale installation in the UK. Luckily though, the free exhibition, dubbed “Slices Of Time”, can still be found online. It’s the most brightly-coloured display on this list and is inspired by the artist’s time living in Tokyo among the neon lights. Slices Of Time takes on Moureaux’s invented concept of  shikiri,  which means ‘dividing space with colour’. The exhibition is a sight to behold and it’s available here for free .

Eddy Frankel

Life without art and museums is just a whole lot of Netflix and cheap lager, that’s what self-isolation has taught me. Good heavens, I miss museums. The smell, the light, the people, the ART. I really miss art. But it’s good to know that way before everything went crazy last year, most of London’s museums digitised their collections and even created virtual tours of their spaces. If you miss those places as much as I do, especially now that we're deep into yet another lockdown, then this might just be the balm your restless soul needs. From Tate Modern through to the Natural History Museum, here are our favourite virtual tours of our most beloved London cultural institutions.

Tate Modern

Tate Modern

Photograph: Facebook/Tate

The Tate’s collection is staggering: Monet, Picasso, Rothko, all the big names. In this tour, Tate Modern’s director Frances Morris takes you on a tour of one of the Tate’s new buildings, showing you works by Louise Bourgeois, Carl Andre and plenty of others. For some reason, Nick Grimshaw’s there too. I don’t know why. I don’t like it.

The Courtauld Gallery of Art

Courtauld

Photograph: Courtauld

This is a virtual tour of a museum that was shut even before the current crisis. The Courtauld’s been closed for refurbishment for ages, but cleverly created this digital tour for posterity’s sake. It’s room by room, so start at the beginning with Cranach the Elder’s ‘Adam and Eve’, scoot through the portraits of old dead people in room four and then head straight for the Impressionist and modernist delights of rooms six and seven. Van Gogh, Manet, Kandinsky? Yes please!

The National Portrait Gallery

National Portrait Gallery

Photograph: National Portrait Gallery

Ah, London’s museum Marmite. The NPG is filled with stuff you either love or despise with a hatred so intense it’s all-consuming. ‘The Cholmondeley Ladies’ painting? Amazing, love it. The portrait of Ed Sheeran? I’d rather stab my eyes out with a pair of tweezers. But don’t listen to me, take the tour and decide for yourself.

The National Gallery

National Gallery

Photograph: National Gallery

This one’s done in collaboration with Google Street View, so you get all the thrills of scouring your local streets to see if they caught you picking your nose, but with paintings instead. The National Gallery’s collection has some of the greatest artists who ever lived – Renaissance masters, Baroque painters and Impressionist adventurers – and there is nowhere better to lose yourself for an afternoon in London. Plus, you get to stand in exactly the right spot to see the skull straighten out in Holbein’s ‘The Ambassadors’. And online, there are no Italian schoolkids with giant backpacks getting between you and the Raphael. Heaven.

The British Museum

British Museum

Photograph: British Museum

Woo, things were hotting up for a while there with Brexit. As Britain formally withdrew from the European Union, bills were being drafted in Brussels that would basically force the British Museum to give the Parthenon Marbles back to Greece. The CV crisis has put the kibosh on all that for now, so there are probably some very relieved people at the BM. But in the meantime, let’s all enjoy it online while we can (and the mummies, obviously: everyone loves the mummies).

Want more virtual art exhibitions? Have a look at this heartbreaking show we’ve part-hosted  here .

Have you heard of virtual tour to beautiful cultural place?

I visited The Natural History Museum of London virtually. Yes, you read right. I visited this beautiful place at my home. with the help of Google Art & Culture Application. I got a chance to see those incredible dinosaur skeletons and beautiful architecture. it was a nice experience using that Google Art & Culture App! but I found it troubling. while moving towards a side, as when you try to move in a particular direction. the app starts zooming that particular area. The rest of the experience was good. this app has so many features like you can take a photo and transform it with classic artworks, you can Discover portraits that look like you, you can Find art by using the colors of your photo, you can Wander through immersive galleries and get up close to art and much more. Their visual qualities and architecture details were so good.

Every time I go there is so much to see not a great fan of the stuffed bits but there is much more than that. Can spend all day here.

went primarily for the wildlife photography exhibition, but struggled with the museum, its very disjointed, and very crowded, an may be its more geared to a younger audience, though i found the marine and mammal section interesting, but both under served.

The animatronics are really amazing - makes the dinos look real. Its a great learning experience for children. We went to it as the V & A Museum ended up being closed that day and this is right next to it. Had not had it on our list of things to do, but we are sure glad we went and we will go back again

a month ago Iconic London museum which is a must see for the whole family. This stunning building houses a natural history collection dating back billions of years. It's a huge place with many different sections and it's very difficult to do the whole thing in one go. It's free though and you can come back again. Dinosaurs, human evolution, volcano and earthquake zones are just some of the things to see and enjoy. With a number of cafes, plenty of bathrooms and gift shops, there is something for everyone. The architecture of the actual museum is beautiful and we had an amazing time.

I visited with my 8 year old nephew with additional needs. To my amazement we managed to stay for almost 3 hours (including lunch) despite his very short attention span. We had a great visit although not sure we saw everything as he was getting a little bored. He has even said he will come back!

7 awesome virtual tours of London museums

The british museum virtual tour.

The British Museum has put together an incredible virtual experience. Thanks to Google Arts & Culture you can explore pretty much everything the museum has to offer, and at your own pace.

Just click on any of the pictures of stories, collections or items, and you will see a more close up photo of that item, as well as relevant information and history. You can also do a Google Street View tour of the courtyard and interior of the British Museum.

My personal favourite is the interactive The Museum of the World experience. Here you can learn about individual artefacts through a global timeline.

Virtual timeline experience of the British Museum

The Tate Modern 360 tour

The Tate Modern put together a 360 tour hosted by Nick Grimshaw, presenter of Radio 1, and Frances Morris, director of the Tate Modern.

Throughout the video you can listen to them talking about and explaining some of the art pieces, while using your controller to turn around and get a 360 view of the rooms.

It’s a really cool virtual tour, which allows you to explore some of the most popular art pieces of the Tate, while learning about them from Frances Morris herself. It’s not every day that you get a museum director giving you a tour!

360 tour of the Tate Modern

Virtual tour of the Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum also has a virtual tour hosted through Google Arts & Culture. However it doesn’t go into as much detail as the British Museum with specific artefacts that you can click on to learn more.

It’s still really cool though since you can explore every single room of the museum with a Google Street View interface. You can get closer to specific pieces, turn around and get a 360 view.

It’s my personal favourite museum in London and I’m glad you can get such a detailed virtual tour of it.

Google Street View view of the Natural History Museum

Science Museum virtual tours

The Science Museum is my second favourite museum in London after the Natural History Museum. Their huge space exhibition has always fascinated me.

I love their virtual experience also because it’s very varied. They over a Google Street View of their museum spaces, so that you can click through and see all the different rooms and exhibitions.

They also offer curator gallery guides. Here you can select specific exhibitions and watch videos by the museum curators, where they go into more detail about each of them.

Virtual tour of the Science Museum

The National Portrait Gallery 360 virtual tours

The National Portrait Gallery offers 360 virtual tours of all its main galleries. Just select the gallery you want to explore and you will get a 360 view of it.

You can zoom in and get up close to the portraits. While the National Portrait Gallery wouldn’t be my first choice if I had to pick a London museum to explore, the fact that I can tour it from the comfort of my bedroom makes it very appealing.

360 view of Weldon Galleries at the National Portrait Gallery

Virtual tour of the Courtauld Gallery

The Courtald Gallery is another museum that uses a Google Street View type of interface. You can freely roam around the rooms of the various rooms of the museum and zoom up close to specific paintings.

You can also choose specific rooms from a sidebar menu. Here you will find famous pieces like Vincent Van Gogh’s Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear .

Virtual tour of Courtauld Galleries

Houses of Parliament virtual tour

You can do a virtual tour of the Houses of Parliament while learning about the main interest points. You can either select the room you want to explore from the drop down menu, or click your way there through the interactive map.

There are also big “i” buttons that, once you click on them, will give you information about the room in general, or about specific hotspots in those rooms. This virtual tour is a great way to tick off one of the main London bucket list experiences.

How to Maximize an Afternoon at the Natural History Museum of Utah

Written By Matcha

NHMU_Dinosaurs-2_Natural-History-Museum-Utah_Salt-Lake-City_Kunde-Michael_2021

“Let’s start at the top and work our way down,” I say. My mom and I are standing in the Canyon, Natural History Museum of Utah’s grand open atrium, located on its second floor.

We skip the Museum Café, Store, and Utah Futures exhibits — for now — and take the elevator up to the fifth floor Rooftop Terrace and Native Voices exhibits. This quiet level offers panoramic views of the Salt Lake Valley and is the perfect place to start your afternoon at the Natural History Museum of Utah.

Location, Location, Location

Staring out from this outdoor deck, you can see much of the city, but little of the impressive building the Natural History Museum of Utah is housed in — the Rio Tinto Center. Spanning five floors and tucked along the foothills of Salt Lake City 's Wasatch Mountains, the museum is adjacent to Red Butte Garden , the Intermountain West’s largest botanical garden and part of the University of Utah campus.

The Rio Tinto Center’s building was uniquely constructed with 42,000 square feet of shining copper mined from local Kennecott Utah Copper’s Bingham Canyon Mine. Its brilliant edifice is designed to mimic Utah’s famous layered rocks and has made the center a striking sight since its 2011 opening.

Native Voices: Utah’s Tribes

Back inside, we learn about the traditions of Utah’s eight federally recognized Indian tribes in the Native Voices area through audio and artifacts before continuing downstairs to the Life exhibit. Local tribes were consulted on the creation of this exhibit.

Life: DNA to Ecosystems

This fourth floor has so much fascinating information that it can be a bit overwhelming. See the web of life illustrated through DNA, Utah ecosystems, preserved butterflies and local animals. Hit the highlights before moving along to the next floor where dinosaurs await.

Land: First Peoples and Past Worlds

The museum’s crowning jewel is its third floor, which we reach by following a winding ramp down Level 4’s west side to the land ancient people, dinosaurs and geology galore.

Start exploring Land by touching rocks from Utah’s three distinct regions: the Middle Rocky Mountains, Basin and Range and Colorado Plateau. We step out onto the outdoor terrace to see one of these regions in the wild: Utah’s Middle Rocky Mountains. The towering mountains and surrounding foothills showcase this diverse area of Utah geography.

Back inside, there’s a can’t-miss natural disaster area focused on earthquakes. As Utahns, we’ve been taught our whole lives that the “Big One” is coming any day, which makes this exhibit on earthquakes and plate tectonics fascinating. If you’re not into end-of-the-world scenarios, continue to the Great Salt Lake exhibit.

Can you believe the entire Salt Lake Valley was once completely underwater?

Great Salt Lake: The Remnant of an Ancient Lake

Can you believe the entire Salt Lake Valley was once completely underwater? The Great Salt Lake exhibit is the place to learn about the world’s second saltiest lake — a remnant of Lake Bonneville. If you’ve recently visited the lake, walking under the display of flying seagulls and critters that call it home felt like a realistic way to experience it again. (Read: Great Salt Lake Needs Your Visit )

Past Worlds: Dinosaurs Come to Life

The Past Worlds exhibit is definitely a museum highlight. Utah is known for its diverse and plentiful dinosaur species, and fossil digs uncover new species all the time.

I could spend hours walking along the elevated ramp that showcases dozens of reconstructed dinosaur skeletons and real fossils. There’s a Gryposaurus, a duck-billed dinosaur, a Utahraptor found in Moab, an Allosaurus from Utah’s late Jurassic period, and a huge Stegosaurus from Utah’s Dinosaur National Monument or Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry — just to name a few.

This gallery also displays the world’s largest collection of horned dinosaur skulls and is an excellent place for geeking out on paleontology and imagining what life was like in Utah 150 million years ago.

Gemstone Central

You might be running out of time, but make a stop at the Gemstone and Minerals exhibit — across from Past Worlds in O.C. Tanner Hall. Diamonds might be a girl’s best friend, but I loved all the sparkling gemstones in this collection. See rough mineral forms and beautifully cut, colorful gemstones found in Utah in a 12-foot vertical display as well as minerals from around the world in the "All the Colors of the Rainbow” exhibit.

Special Exhibits

NHMU also hosts special exhibits throughout the year, with topics ranging from chocolate to poison to predators. A recent exhibit, Nature’s Ultimate Machines, showed the natural powers of plants and animals.

Canyons, Cafés, Cookies

The third floor winds down to the second where we pass the Paleo Prep Lab and see paleontologists actually working on fossils to display. (Find play areas next door in Our Backyard where tiny tykes can climb, explore and don costumes.)

The Utah Futures exhibit concludes the exhibition galleries, and I like visiting this section to learn about the implications of global issues and changing environments for Utah. The focus on sustainability and making Utah a better place makes it one of my favorite stops.

By now, you’ve probably worked up an appetite. We make a beeline to the Museum Café where a sunny terrace awaits. The paninis made with Utah bread and local ingredients are my go-to late lunch, but you also can’t go wrong with a cup of Utah’s own Silver Bean Coffee paired with an iced dinosaur cookies — they’re not just for kids! Sip and snack on the terrace that looks out on the valley and distant Oquirrh Mountains or settle in at a table inside if the weather looks dicey.

Before you go, pick up one-of-a-kind only-in-Utah gifts and souvenirs at the Museum Store. Local artists craft unique jewelry for the shop, and you can also find dinosaur toys and collectible items.

Bonneville Shoreline Trail

Once you’ve wrapped up your museum tour, step outside and take a walk on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail , which follows the shoreline of ancient Lake Bonneville for just over 100 miles. The trail runs right in front of the museum and is open to bikers, runners, walkers and pets.

Tip: Fill your water bottle at the drinking fountain outside NHMU before hitting the trail.

There you have it! With this trusty guide, you can hit the Natural History Museum of Utah’s highlights in an afternoon, giving you plenty of time to add other stops to your itinerary for a fun-filled day.
