Guide to the Clare Valley

  • Getting to Clare Valley
  • When to visit

One of the major wine regions in South Australia, the Clare Valley is best known for its world-class riesling.

A fertile wine region two hours north of Adelaide, the Clare Valley is home to some of the most awarded wineries in the country. It’s also one of Australia's oldest wine-producing areas, dating back to the 1850s. With farm-gate stores, providores and restaurants offering incredible food, your choice of luxury accommodation, scenic cycling and walking trails and a rich history to explore, a stay in the Clare Valley is a treat for all the senses.

The quickest way to get to Clare Valley is to fly into Adelaide Airport (ADL) and drive 2 hours, or 142km (88mi) north.

  • Car hire options are available at the airport to pre book, or hire on the day.
  • There are no hire car options in Clare Valley so if you would like to hire a car, you will need to do so in Adelaide.

Or sit back and enjoy the scenery on a Yorke Peninsula Coach which operates 3 days a week from Adelaide Central. The route you will take is the “Mid North- Adelaide (Peterborough-Jamestown-Clare-Gawler)”. Pre Booking is essential.

Getting around this scenic wine region is a breeze with many options available. Get around by car, coach, taxi, private tour or cycling along one of the most scenic trails in the region.

The shoulder seasons, spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May), are the best times to visit Clare Valley as you can skip the crowds and get the best of the sunshine while also cosying up to the fireplace with a locally made wine in the evening.

  • High season: Summer (December to February)
  • Low season: Winter (June to August)
  • Don’t miss: Clare Valley Gourmet Week (May)

Clare Valley

Where is the Clare Valley Wine Region?

The Clare Valley wine area is located in South Australia's Mid North, roughly 142 kilometers north of Adelaide.

Unique terroir of Clare Valley appellation

There are five wine-growing regions in Clare Valley, including Watervale, Polish Hill River, Clare, Auburn, and Sevenhill. Each town has its own soil type, ranging from broken slate in Polish Hill River to limestone red in Watervale - in total, Clare Valley contains 11 different types of soil. As a result, each wine area produces distinct wine types, ranging from light and delicate to deep and strong. Throughout the summer, the temperature is hot and dry, with cold evenings that slow the ripening of grapes, which is beneficial for varietals like Riesling. Winters have the most rainfall with the least amount of sunshine, resulting in berries with concentrated tastes and aroma.

History of Clare Valley wine region

The Clare Valley has been producing wine for nearly 160 years, with the first grapes planted in the early 1840s. Today, the area has more than 35 cellar doors, each with its own style of winemaking.

What is Clare Valley Wine?

Clare Valley produces around 21,500 tonnes of grapes per year - which may not seem like a lot compared to other Australian wine-growing regions - it's most well known for its high quality but small result. The wines of this region have been receiving international recognition for the last few decades. Despite staying true to the region's roots, producers continue experimenting with new vineyards and new styles of wine.

The Clare Valley is well-known for its Rieslings and world-class reds such as Shiraz and Cabernet. Chardonnay , Pinot Grigio, Semillon, Mourvedre, Grenache , Tempranillo , and Malbec are among the other varieties.

Clare Valley's hallmark wine is Riesling. It's famous worldwide for being light, fresh, and zesty with lime tastes, making it age for years. Shiraz is full-flavoured in general, with overtones of blackberry, spice, and mint. Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark, deep wine with black cherry characteristics. They're frequently mixed with Shiraz to create the blend of powerful and distinctively Australian Shiraz Cabernet.

Food to Pair with Clare Valley wine

Tom Yum is a spicy, sour, and fragrant soup that is generally eaten with rice and is one of the most well-known Thai foods. It's made with shrimp, shallots, fish sauce, lemongrass, minced fresh ginger or galangal, lime juice, mushrooms, kaffir lime leaves, and minced Thai chili peppers.

Tom yum is customarily topped with coriander leaves and frequently served as an appetizer.

Rijsttafel

Rijsttafel is a complex Dutch dinner that originated during the colonial era. As rijsttafel consists of rice and a range of dishes such as fish, poultry, pickles, curried meats, vegetables, relishes, condiments, sauces, fruits, eggs, nuts, and so on, the Dutch were most likely influenced by an Indonesian dish known as nasi padang.

Diners are offered a plate of rice before selecting from a menu of up to 40 different side dishes! It's no surprise that dinner might take many hours to consume. The word rijsttafel (rice table) refers to this spectacular feast of tiny plates laden with spicy, sweet, sour, and salty tastes, all coupled with rice.

Sashimi is a Japanese delicacy consisting of very thinly sliced raw fish or other seafood, typically served with soy sauce and wasabi paste. The word "sashimi" is often translated as "pierced body" and needs to be eaten fresh, without any preservatives. Sashimi is often made using squid, tuna, scallops, and octopus as its main components. It is traditionally eaten as an appetizer. It is typically garnished with seaweed and shiso leaves.

Places to visit in Clare Valley

Lake bumbunga, a place like from another planet.

The vivid pink coastline of Lake Bumbunga is difficult to miss as you drive along the highway north of Adelaide. It's not an uncommon sight in this area of the world. A salt lake famed for its periodic colour variations, the region has been mined for salt since 1881 and draws many tourists.  This lake is one of the most beautiful pink lakes in the world and truly a place that will pamper the soul of nature lovers.

Coober Pedy, Place With Hotels Tucked Inside Hills

Coober Pedy is the place where you may rest well after your amazing underground journey. The subterranean mining town is famed for its sun-baked lunar environment, rich history, and peculiar culture and has served as the setting for several films. Descend beneath the ground to find a maze of underground dwellings, hotels, and businesses. Exciting places to discover while you are in the town are Umoona Opal Mine and Museum, Crocodile Harry's Underground Nest, Josephine's Gallery, and Kangaroo Orphanage.

Clare Valley Walk, Little Piece of Tuscany in Australia

The Clare Valley, sometimes known as Australia's Tuscany, is filled with rustic villages and antique stone buildings surrounded by vineyards. From exposed ridge lines with endless vistas to Vineyards, Villages, and a surprising quantity of Native Australian Bush, the region offers a spectacular walking experience. You also naturally pass a lot of wineries and restaurants that have won several awards along the road.

Clare Valley Tours

Clare valley, you ought to visit the.

In February 1879, Ned Kelly, Victoria's most notorious outlaw and his gang vanished into thin air. They remained in hiding for over a year, resurfacing in June 1880. Ned's sister Kate lived in the Clare Valley, and Kellytown ruins are on the highest point of this most Irish of all South Australian Counties.

Fast forward to the present, and the Clare Valley, located an hour north of the Barossa Valley, is a destination that offers natural beauty and authenticity. According to Wine Australia, it has more vines planted than the Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Valley, and Tasmania combined. It's a place where you can spot kangaroos, indulge in gourmet delicacies, and meet some of the quirkiest characters you'll ever come across. Here you'll find some of Australia's "Ancient Vines," with vines from Bordeaux cuttings in 1860 still producing grapes for wine in this phylloxera-free environment.

Brian Croser AO, Andrew Mitchell, Jeffrey Grosset, Nick Ryan, and Rob Geddes MW are just a few Australian wine industry legends who have roots in the Clare Valley. So stay for a few days, unwind, and book a tour with us to experience the region.

Some Recent Questions we have Answered:

Q* Is Lake Bumbunga in the Clare Valley? A* No. The 'Clare Valley' designates a wine growing region which is geographically limited by rainfall and valleys. It is part of 'the Mid-North' of South Australia. Lake Bumbunga - "the Pink Lake", is a salt lake, and not a part of the Clare Valley.  Some city boffin has mapped this region of flat plains and seaside towns and called the Mid-North the Clare Valley. Facts are irrelevant to well paid public servants.

Q* Can you take us on a day-trip to the Barossa Valley from the Clare Valley?

A* Yes. Find your Clare Valley accommodation and book 3x nights. It's like being on a cruise ship where the next day is a different place for you to explore. You won't be the first guests who have booked a Clare Tour and a Barossa Tour for the following day.

Q* Do you know the Polish Silesian and Prussian History sites?

A*  Yes, and I have managed to gain private access to museums and religious sites on short notice for Polish tourists and heritage-chasers. If you are interested in tracing your family history, visit the Clare Valley.

Together we will have some fun as we travel around some of South Australia's boutique wine country.

Let's make those memories!

Clare UnCorked

Leave Clare township at 10.30am .

Return approximately 4.30pm.

Much, much more than a wine tour, this expedition is designed to give you a unique insight into the  Clare Valley   and how it came to be.

Fear not, we’ll be sampling the very best food and wine along the way, but we want this to be an educational experience as well.

We start with a tour of the Valley’s very first winery, Sevenhill Cellars, a sacred site of seductive wine and spiritual character. Built by the society of  Jesuits  in 1851, it’s home to some of the world’s oldest vines, which were started with cuttings from nearby Bungaree Station.

The vines were tended by the men of faith, many of whom, interred in the crypt beneath the church. It’s an awe-inspiring story that sets the tone for the day.

From here, we’ll travel on back roads and private property, through vineyards and farmland with stunning views of Polish Hill River and beyond. There’s no shortage of photo opportunities.

We’ll sample wines from some of the Valley’s younger stars like Hill River Estate, Pikes, Paulett or Reillys – we share the love at Clare Valley Tours – and we’ll choose a winery to stop for lunch as well.

As we travel between cellar doors you’ll doubtless have some questions: What crop is that? What vines are those? When will the vines bud? We’re confident we’ll have all the answers! If not we’ll offer an embellished highly credible response.

The historic township of  Mintaro  is not to be missed.

Established around 1850 as an overnight stop for Ox drays carting the rich ore of the Burra Mines to Port Wakefield, the heritage listed town is known for its world class slate. It’s also home to the first Jesuit church built in Australia.

We don’t think you’ll have had quite enough of our famous country hospitality yet, so in the afternoon will head west into the Skillogalee Valley. Contrast the wines here from those in the east as you choose between award-winning wineries like Kilikanoon, Mitchell, Penna Lane, or Skillogalee. We like to share the love, we may end up in Auburn, Ulster Park, Claymore or O’Leary Walker.

We’ll visit at least a couple of these before your day is done.

Departing 10.30am Tuesday to Sundays.
