Brampton is on the historic road between Carlisle and Newcastle upon Tyne, but nowadays bypassed by A69. A689 is a shortcut from Gretna and A74(M) in Scotland.
Stagecoach Cumbria Bus 685 runs hourly daily from Carlisle and takes 25 min. Most terminate in Brampton but every hour or two they continue to Haltwhistle , Hexham , Corbridge , Heddon-on-the-Wall and Newcastle upon Tyne . Bus 680 from Alston is just an occasional school service.
There is no bus station in Brampton, buses stop along Front St.
Trains from Carlisle run every hour or two and take 20 min to Brampton, continuing to Haltwhistle, Hexham, Prudhoe, Metrocentre and Newcastle, another hour. Some go further to Morpeth but don't always stop at Brampton. Change at Carlisle for fast trains from London Euston, Manchester and Glasgow.
54.9323 -2.7035 1 Brampton station is a mile southeast of town. It's a simple platform halt with ticket machines but no toilets or waiting room. There is level access to the Newcastle-bound platform and a footbridge with no lift for the Carlisle-bound platform. You can reach the latter step-free via a three-mile detour down another lane.

- St Martin's Church is on Front St in town centre. It was built in the 1870s (with the tower added in 1906) and is the only church designed by the Pre-Raphaelite architect Philip Webb. The stained glass windows were designed by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris. (The Earls of Carlisle were paying for all these big talents.) It's an active Anglican church but is often locked outside services, as it has been vandalised.
- 54.9422 -2.7341 1 Moot Hall is a cute octagonal building in Market Square completed in 1817. Originally the ground floor was an open-plan poultry market; it was enclosed after 1896 when the building was handed over to the town council. The ground floor is now the Tourist Information Centre. The ring in the cobbles outside is no longer used to tether bulls for bull-baiting.
- 54.9439 -2.73 2 The Motte or Mote is an earthwork cut out of a ridge that in the 12th century had a wooden castle. A statue of the 7th Earl of Carlisle was placed atop in the 19th century.
- 54.9463 -2.7663 3 Brampton Old Church a mile west of town became redundant when St Martin's was completed. It's an attractive little sandstone building that harks back to the 12th century, and stands upon the site of a fort on Hadrian's Wall. You may be able to get the key from the farm next door, but all interior fittings have been removed.
- 54.9433 -2.8052 4 Solway Aviation Museum is 3 miles west of town on the airfield, see Carlisle .
- 54.9307 -2.7416 5 Capon Tree Monument marks the spot where six Jacobite soldiers were brought from Carlisle and hanged on 21 Oct 1746 in the aftermath of their failed uprising. "And the wuddy has her ain, and we twa are left alane, Free o' Carlisle gaol in the dawing..." is the 1876 version of "Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond", lamenting those who took the low road by being put to death. It was 12 months since Bonnie Prince Charlie and his men marched south in high hopes, receiving the bloodless surrender of Brampton and continuing to Derby. But the rebellion had little support in England and thereafter retreated and retreated, to be crushed at Culloden . The ancient Capon Tree was a popular meeting place for townsfolk: it died in 1904 and was replaced by the stone monument. A new tree was planted in 2013. The British Legion holds a memorial service here on 21 Oct the anniversary of the executions.
- 54.9555 -2.6889 6 Naworth Castle is the private residence of the Earls of Carlisle, so you only get to visit in expensive private parties to shoot fish or somesuch. It dates from the 13th century but was embellished and extended in Tudorbethan times. Much of the interior was lost to a fire in 1844 and was re-done in Pre-Raphaelite style.
- 54.9753 -2.6663 8 Banks East Turret is the mostly westerly point on Hadrian's Wall that much resembles a wall. The wall, military road and fortifications stretched coast to coast but the best sections are further east between Hexham and Greenhead. The route passes a couple of miles north of Brampton, with a clearly marked footpath, but here all the masonry has been spirited away and there's just a shallow earthwork. Further west even that has been ploughed or built over on the approach to Carlisle. See Haltwhistle for Birdoswald Roman Fort near Gilsland, 7 miles northeast of Brampton.
- 54.891 -2.715 9 Castle Carrock is a tiny village 3 miles south of Brampton. St Peter's Church, built in 1828, is over the site of the vanished castle.

Brampton - North Cumbria.
Brampton is an extremely handsome town with a wide partially cobbled main street and Market Place with an impressive octagonal Moot Hall of 1817.
Explore the many alleyways and side streets and you will find delightful cottages and other grander buildings of interest.
The main church in Brampton is St.Martin built 1874-8. It is important not only to Brampton but to those interested in the work of the great artist Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898).
He designed some the impressive stained glass windows that were made by William Morris. The church itself was designed by Philip Webb.
Just outside the centre of the town is Capon Hill where in 1746 the survivors of the garrison left behind at Carlisle Castle by Bonnie Prince Charlie during his retreat back to Scotland were hung by a vengeful Duke of Cumberland.
Prince Charlie had stayed in the town when laying siege to Carlisle Castle in 1745.
Two miles east is the picturesque Lanercost Priory with a rich history and fine architecture - well worth visiting.
You will almost certainly want to visit the Roman Wall which can be found less than a mile to the north of the Priory.
A few miles to the south of Brampton is Talkin Tarn, a lovely spot for a picnic and a stroll around its shore.
Also nearby is the delightful Gelt Woods where you can follow a series of paths through a picturesque gorge. You should keep a look out for the rare Red Squirrel when visiting these locations.
Brampton: OS ref NY 527612 Sheet 86. Get the map.
Brampton benefits from being close to the A69 Carlisle to Newcastle road and also the railway line that follows the same route, thus making Brampton easy travel to from most parts of Cumbria and the Lake District.

HERITAGE HIGHLIGHTS: Prince Charlie's House, where Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed during the siege of Carlisle
The historic market town of Brampton dates to at least the 7th century when it was settled by the Angles. The town name probably comes from the Old English for a place of brambles or thorns, which still thrive on the sandy soil. The town originally grew up a mile to the north-west. The entire village was forced to move to make way for the local lord's deer park. The parish church stayed where it was, and for 600 years the people of Brampton had to walk a mile to the old church.
The town owes its growth to the grant of a market charter in 1252, which made Brampton a trading centre. In 1758 the military road between Carlisle and Newcastle brought new growth, as did the thriving cotton-weaving industry in the late 18th century. Most of the town centre was rebuilt in the 18th century when coal mining prospered in the fells south of town. Most of the buildings were made with red sandstone quarried at Gelt Woods.
By the turn of the 19th century, there were 45 pubs in Brampton to serve a population of just 3000. Not surprisingly, drunkenness was a problem, until Lady Carlisle launched a Band of Hope to suppress the worst of the offences. Most of the pubs lost their licenses and today only seven remain, One of these is the picturesque Nag's Head Inn, made from a pair of 17th-century houses.
Not far from the Nag's Head is Prince Charlie's House, one of the oldest buildings in town, which was mentioned in a survey in 1603. The house is so named because Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed here in 1745 while his army besieged nearby Carlisle. The Mayor of Carlisle surrendered the keys to the city to the prince in front of the house.
A short walk from Prince Charlie's House is Half Moon Inn, where the French Ambassador was quartered during the Prince's assault on Carlisle. When the siege was over the Ambassador departed, but left behind a beautifully crafted French dress sword and a bonnet.
One historic that used to be a pub is the Conservative Club on Front Street. The Club was originally an inn called the Black Bull, and also served as a butcher shop. Just off Front Street is Chandler's Lane, whose name recalls a busy candle-making industry.
Another historic inn is the Howard Arms on Front Street, which has a plaque on its wall proudly proclaiming that Charles Dickens slept there. Each of the inn's bedrooms are named for a character from a Dickens' novel.
This picturesque Moot Hall has been the centrepiece of Brampton's market place since 1648, when Oliver Cromwell imprisoned 40 prisoners here. The present building dates to 1817 and was built for Lord Carlisle. It originally stood on piers, with an open space for market stalls at ground level. In 1896 the ground floor was enclosed and the building was given to the Parish Council.
Outside the Moot Hall is a set of iron stocks used to punish local miscreants. It was last used in 1836. Set into the cobbles in front of the Moot Hall is an iron bull ring, used to tether bulls for baiting by dogs. Bull-baiting was a very popular form of entertainment as late as the 19th century. On the south-west wall of the Hall is a plaque to Peter Burn, a local poet.
The ground floor of the Moot Hall is now home to the tourist information centre, while the parish council holds regular meetings upstairs. Open-air markets are still held around the Moot Hall on a weekly basis.
St Martin's Church
While the town centre is full of attractive 18th-century buildings, the parish church of St Martin is much newer; it was designed by the Pre-Raphaelite architect Philip Webb, the only church that Webb worked on. The interior is a delight, featuring superb stained glass windows by Webb's contemporary Edward Burne-Jones.
Just beyond the church at the corner of Carlisle Road is the Old Police Station, built in the late 1880s. It replaced a much smaller building founded as a National School in 1816. A few steps along Carlisle Road from the police station is Oulton House, built around 1603. Oulton House was the home of the Foster family of violin makers. One of the family moved to London and became the first British publisher to publish works by Mozart and Haydn.
Brampton Motte
On the east side of town, reached by a footpath off Moat Street, is the treed hill of Brampton Motte, more commonly known as The Mote. Though the hill itself is a natural feature, its summit is man-made, and formed the base of a late 12th-century motte and bailey castle. From the top of the castle motte, you can get panoramic views over the Solway Firth and the Pennines.
The motte was topped by a timber palisade, with water drawn from four wells. In the 15th century, the castle mound was used as a signalling beacon to warn of impending attack by Scottish raiders. Atop the mound is a statue of the 7th Earl of Carlisle, George William Frederick Howard, ' erected by the people of Cumberland to commemorate his public services and personal worth '.
Naworth Castle
Further outside Brampton is Naworth Castle , a Tudor house that is home to the Howard family, Earls of Carlisle. Naworth Castle dates to the 13th century, and served as home to the powerful Lords of Marches, charged with keeping peace in the turbulent border region. The house is not usually open to the public, but there are several footpaths through the grounds.
Lanercost Priory
At the bottom of the hill below Naworth Castle lies Lanercost Priory , founded in 1166 for Augustinan canons. Edward I stayed at the priory in 1307 on his way to invade Scotland for the last time. The gravely ill king dies shortly after leaving Lanercost. The monastic church dates to the 13th century. After the Priory was dissolved by Henry VIII the church lived on as the parish church. Historic highlights include the Lanercost Cross, a carved cross shaft dating to 1214.
Birdoswald Roman Fort, Hadrian's Wall
About 5 miles from Brampton is Birdoswald Roman Fort , one of the best-preserved forts on Hadrian's Wall . The fort was built to defend the place where the Wall crossed the River Irthing. It is remarkably complete, and you can even see remains of the turf wall that preceded Hadrian's Wall.
Exploring Brampton is a delight. Our family parked in the small public car park off the Main Street. We picked up a very useful town trail from the tourist information centre in Moot Hall and spent several extremely enjoyable hours rambling about the old town.
NB Don't mistake this Brampton with the small Cumbrian village near Appleby-in-Westmorland (or indeed the plethora of other Bramptons around England - I counted nine examples of Bramptons outside Cumbria).

The History of Naworth Castle
Naworth Castle, also recorded as Naward in historical documents , is a lovely castle based in Cumbria, England , near the town of Brampton. It is adjacent to the A69, about 2 miles or 3.2km east of Brampton. It is on the opposite side of the River Irthing, and just within sight of Lanercost Priory.
The history of Naworth Castle
Once upon a time, Naworth Castle was the seat of the Barons Dacre and is now that of their cognatic descendants, the Earls of Carlisle . Nowadays, it is a Grade I listed building. It is a stunning private home that is available for exclusive use hire.
The early history
Naworth Castle is said to have been built in the late 13 th century in the form of a square keep and bailey. It was first mentioned in 1323. In 1335, a licence to crenellate was granted to Ralph Dacre.
Thomas Dacre, the man who commanded the reserve of the English army at the Battle of Flodden and was known as “the Builder Dacre”, built the castle’s gateway and placed over it his coat of arms with the Dacre family motto below that read: ‘ Fort en Loialte” ( Norman-French : “Strong in Loyalty”).
Further additions
In 1602, there were further additions for his successor, Lord William Howard . It is very likely that the 18 th -century walled garden lies within the boundaries of the original moat. Howard purchased back the Dacre family estate from King James and immediately took up residence with his children and grandchildren at Naworth Castle.
He then went forth and restored the castle, improved the estate , and established complete order in that part of the country. He had a rather large number of children, of whom Philip, his heir, was the grandfather of Charles Howard, 1 st Earl of Carlisle and his younger son Francis was the ancestor of the Howards of Corby.
The 1844 fire
On Saturday the 18 th of May,1844, the castle caught fire. To this day, it is thought that it was the result of the ignition of some soot in the flue of Porter’s Lodge. The fire spread rapidly due to the structure’s lack of internal walls.
The fire remained uncontained until it reached the northern wing. Some of the property was able to be saved. However, by the time two fire engines had arrived by train from Carlisle, most of the roof had collapsed and the fire had been able to spread to nearly every room on the three sides of the quadrangle.
Buckets of water had to be passed in from a rivulet at the foot of a steep hill on the north side of the castle. Luckily, “Belted Will’s Tower” was saved. The fire continued until roughly one o’clock on Sunday morning when it was brought under control, finally.
Anthony Salvin, a well-known architect undertook restoration work on the Naworth Castle.
William Morris, the renowned artist and socialist, stayed at the castle in 1874. Once, in a letter to Aglaia Coronia, he wrote “…all is very pleasant. Ned & I pass our mornings in a most delightful room in one of the towers that has not been touched since William Howard of Queen Elizabeth’s time lived there: the whole place is certainly the most poetical in England”
From 1939 to 1940, Naworth Castle was occupied by Rossall School from Fleetwood in Lancashire, which had been evacuated from its own buildings by various government departments.
It is currently occupied by the Hon. Philip Howard, younger brother and heir presumptive of the 13th Earl of Carlisle.
The current day
Nowadays, Naworth Castle is a Grade I listed building. It is a stunning private home that is available for exclusive use hire.

The church although relatively recently built in the late 1870's is worth a visit to see the stained-glass windows. The windows were apparently designed by artist Edward Burn-Jones and built by the William Morris studios. The colours in the glass are so bright and vibrant even after 150 years, well worth the visit.

The Nag's Head Inn, Brampton. The historic market town of Brampton dates to at least the 7th century when it was settled by the Angles.
